I saw the first World Trade Tower on fire immediately after being struck by the first plane. I was watching, not realizing what I was seeing when the second plane hit the second World Trade Tower. The horror was too much for my mind to behold. I felt as though I were watching some terrible horrow show. I called work and told them to tune in the TV in our conference room. I then called my two children, who happen to both live in Washington, DC. They had not left for work yet and were both still at home. I told them to turn on the TV. I then finished getting dressed and was on my way to work when the third plane hit the Pentagon. I then changed my mind about going to work and went to my friend, Mary's, house where I stayed until 8:00 pm glued to the TV set and watched the tragic events of that terrible day unfold. I could not get through on the telephone lines again that day to talk to my children, although I knew they would not be going into the city as it had been closed off to the public. Although my father wasn't crying on the outside I knew he was on the inside because as I turned to view the TV I saw my first look t the smoking hulk of the towers. I couldn?t believe that someone, anyone would have a level of malice and be so uncontrolled to do such a thing. The second plane had not startled me because as I saw the first plane I knew this wasn't an accident. O how I would love to believe it was an accident but I knew better. My first emotion was on of the pain of those poor soles who would commit such a crime. All my father could do was watch as the towers crumbled and fell. My alarm was set to the radio to wake me up, and the first thing I heard when I woke up was, "they are calling it a terrorist attack" I ran to the living room and turned on the TV that's when I saw the second plane hit the tower. I just fell to the couch. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I called my family on the East Coast right away! They told my that my uncle and cousins had already gone into work that day. And they were waiting to see if the were okay. My mother told me I still had to go to school that day. And that she would sit by the phone for my aunt's to call. I was in shock. I could not do anything at school. I spent most of the day in the auditorium with the rest of the students that could not handle what was going on. when the school got a call from my mother and told me that my uncle was okay but they were still looking for my cousins. I cried because my uncle was okay but also that we didn't know if my cousins were okay. I don't think I slept at all that night. My economics teacher decided to show us a video of the news reports that were on that night. I don't think any of us were ready to see that. Most of the girls were in tears by the first few minutes of the videos. And you could hear a few of the guys crying a tear too. Well one year later my cousin is still missing. I can't really understand why this has happened my cousin was a good guy. He was going to be married in a few weeks. September 28th, that was the date. Now his fianc?e is part of the family. But not in the way we had hoped. My aunt feels she family anyway. Even if she doesn't have a ring on her finger. She's till my cousin too. I think we all need to understand that this was done out of anger and hate. We need to take out what has done this to us. The terrorists need to stop. What I would like to do is. Get all of them in a room and show them what the have done the families they have destroyed! And ask them this. How would you feel if some killed you family because they didn't like the way your government worked! How would you feel if you didn't know if your family was live or dead because someone used them to kill thousands of others! But I don't know if that would work. I don't think they would care. I thought who in Gods name would do such a thing,I first thought it was an attack by the chinese,but after finding out the truth i could not believe it.We were on a state of high alert ,we were called to the mayors office and were ordered to stand by and wait. My boss came running up the stairs in a panic telling me that a plane just flew into one of the buildings. I was in shock. It didn't really hit me until we turned on the TV at work and watched as the second plane flew into the other tower. Everyone around me was stunned and no one was working. They let everyone go home, and all I did was watch in horror what was happening on TV. The thing that hurt me the most was watching the people jump from the buildings. I will never forget that day on September 11. It was the worst thing I have ever seen. All I wanted to do was be with my family. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: When the World Trade Center towers were brought down by hijacked airplanes five years ago, I was in fourth grade. My sister woke me up and told me to come downstairs to watch what was happening in New York. I had never even heard of the World Trade Center before in my life. The only thing being shown on TV was a grainy recording of the first tower smoking and the second one being hit, played over and over again. After eating breakfast and going to school, I had no idea what was going on until my teacher explained it to us. Then, all the students were assembled outside on the very steep hill holding red, white and blue papers to form the American flag. The image taken can probably be found online. The school was Trailside Elementary, in Anchorage, Alaska. After that day, I never heard about it very often; only when the anniversary came around and the Afghanistan and Iraq wars flared up. Thinking about the people who jumped from the towers instead of being burned alive makes me sad. Watching a documentary with actual footage of the towers and hearing the people who jumped hitting the ground was enough to make me cringe, not to mention the screaming people who were on fire. They knew that they were going to die and they had one last choice of which way they were going to go out. It clattered and, simultaneously, I heard a huge explosion from somewhere outside the building. I later found out the explosion was the plane hitting the Pentagon perhaps five miles from the office. But at the time, I kept on working. For some reason, around 11:30, I got up and looked out the window. The parking lot was empty except for my woebegon minivan. We'd been evacuated except for a couple of key people who stayed to answer non-stop phone calls about the attacks--and me, who'd been forgotten. I stayed at work too, waiting to pick up my son from high school, not afraid, wanting to help but not knowing how, answering phones, clicking back and forth among on-line news sources and listening to the radio. At home, my son and I watched television non-stop until sometime the following evening. I even kept it on when I finally fell asleep. I cried and felt awe for people's courage. Especially for the bravery of passengers on the flight that crashed in Pennsylvania. People from across the country called to be sure we were safe since we live in the Washington area. My brother called often. He is a civilian who has worked for almost 20 years in a top secret security branch of the Department of the Navy. Although his offices are currently in Maryland, many of his long-term colleagues were moving into the section of the Pentagon the plane hit. He didn't know for days if his friends were casualties and he kept watch as well with one co-worker whose daughter worked in the World Trade Center. By early afternoon they found out she'd overslept and planned to come to work late and so she was safe. Has September 11 changed everything as we often hear? I'm not wise enough to know. What I fear it has done is to warp patriotism into isolationism. It's a cliche, but it's true: people die by tens of thousands all over the planet everyday from terrorism--from tribal and ethnic warfare, oppression, starvation and disease. But in America we mostly seem to experience this world order second-hand. September 11 brought the everyday lives of people in strife-torn countries into focus a little. But rather than increasing our understanding of how much of the world's population lives, I am afraid of the narrow anti-terrorist agenda articulated for this country. While the outreach is global, the motives appear selective, unilateral and terribly selfish. I hope I am wrong. We were all, like, "HuH? A plane hit the building? You SURE??" Then all the radios on the floor were turned on. By that time, the second plane had hit. At first we thought it was an accident. Now we're all thinking "Terrorists!!" We stayed at our desks and kept listening to the radios. In the meantime I tried to call my husband who was in the city, a bit uptown from the towers. The phones weren't working. I tried to e-mail and amazingly the e-mail service was still operational. He told me he was okay and would keep in touch. At some point a TV was turned on in the big board room and the next thing we heard was "The building is going to fall!!". We all rushed into the room in time to see the South tower collapse. It was like a movie or something - it didn't seem real - it COULDN'T be real! And just when you thought it couldn't be worse, not long after, the North tower fell and we all collapsed in each others arms and cried and cried over the horror of it all. I felt numb the rest of the day. It was the first time I could remember where I watched nothing but news reports for days. Here it is, one year later, and I spent the entire morning watching the reading of the names and crying for all those who lost their lives on that fateful day. I was on that time studying at the university and working on a NGO in Peru, my country. So my schedule were not very rigid. I wook up at 5.40 am on September 11th 2001, that day. I could not sleep at all so I turned the TV on. At that time, the daily news TV programms start in Peru. This day main issue was an strike of public transport service in Lima, so I decided to go to the bed again. It wasn't that important. Three hours later I turned the TV on, again, and what I saw was so shocking. It was an airplane crashing the WTC, live and direct. I can remember the words of the local reporter about it. He said that it was a world-scale tragedy. He barely talked when the second plane crashed. I was confused, I could not understand it because a couple of hours ago the most important event in daily TV programs of Lima was the strike and not terrorist attacks in NYC or DC. Ten minutes after the second attack, I left my bedroom and went to my parents'. My mother was still sleeping. I woke her up and told to watch the TV, that US was attacked. Then I took the cell phone and called my dad's bedroom at the hospital. I told him to watch the TV. He told me he was watching it since the very initial images the international TV programms were shown. "Ok -I told him-. See you later". I hung up and the silence in my department was tremendous. My mother did not say anything, just kept watching the TV, so do I. Each one in our bedrooms. The images I saw that day will never be forgotten. Neither the silence. It was very tragic in the school that whole week. In my third period class, we watched on the television. We all saw in my third period class the second plane hit the second tower. Tell us your story: On September 11th I drove to work (I was working as a counselor in a homeless shelter) in Alexandria, VA around 8:30am with a CD on in the car so I did not hear any local news. When I got to work to check email and voice mail, I became confused. My boyfriend emailed me that (Howard) Stern was talking about a plane hitting the WTC and my sister (in MI) was hysterical on my voice mail saying we were being attacked and she was watching it unfold on the TODAY Show. She is very emotional (like I) and overreacts and I had to see my clients so I figured I'd get back to it later. I am from New York though and the weirder the messages that came in on online news sites and all the more I wanted to know what was going on. I went next door to the large client TV and as I saw the WTC towers on fire it switched to the Pentagon. A client walked in and said "Oh is that what I heard" ANother client said she needed to meet with me NOW. When I asked her to wait since I wanted to find out what was going on. She said to me "But that has been on all morning and I am moving out" It was really hard for me to stay nonjudgemental in counselor fashion that day. My first client was from NY so we did do some processing of the event or what we knew so far. THe whole day was surreal. I figured that I lived closer to the Pentagon than I worked so I stayed and tried to work and in between trying watched it all unfold on TV. My family in NY finally got through to me. But it took days to locate all family and friends that lived or worked in NYC. Everyone I knew was fine, but there were many close calls. I felt blessed but hurt with the rest of the nation. I couldn't volunteer to use my counseling skills since I have not finished my counselor licensure. SHortly after though, I was offered a job with the Community Resilience Project, A FEMA funded 9-11 crisis counseling program. I am nervous about the upcoming anniversary. I still get upset, am hypervigilant, nervous when flying, and felt that sick feeling I felt on 9-11 when something triggers me such as the weather. I was waiting for my wife to finish showering when I saw the planes slam into the WTC. Then the Penatgon was struck. I have 3 small children ages, 3, 2, and 1. And I remember this overwhelming feeling of dread and grief. And of sorrow because of the people who were dying. And because I didn't want my children to fight a war. We had been taking notes off the power point. He turned off the powerpoint and turned the t.v. on to the news and we saw the second plane hit. It was horrible, next thing I know kids are being called out of class to go home and my classes are nearly empty. I called my mom and she said to stay in school that I was safer there than any other place. So I remained at school and left at the normal time. When I got home, I turned the t.v. on and watched the news all night and for many days after. I feel touched that people that had no idea what was goign on risked there lives to run into the towers and help people out. Tell us your story: I woke up on September 11th, got dressed in my athletic because our soccer team was working out in the weight room that morning at 9 a.m. It was a Tuesday so our maid was cleaning our house, and everything was quite hectic even before the terror attacks started. I came downstairs and found my mom and my maid watching the news and the burning World Trade Center, and I remember asking "Is this a big deal?" I just thought it was some bizarre freak accident and I did not think much of it. I rode to school listening to the news with my mom, and right when I was getting out of the car, a news bulletin reported that the Pentagon was on fire. I walked into the locker room to complete getting ready for our workout, and as I sat down with some of my teammates, we all shared what we knew, but it was mostly confusion and none of us really knew what was happening. While we were in the weight room, a school administrator came over the PA system and told all teachers to turn off all the TV's and the only thing they could play was the radio. I showered and went on to second period, then to World History where my teacher Mrs. Franzen updated us, and told us that both World Trade Center towers had fallen, the Pentagon was struck by a plane, and a plane had gone down outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvaniya. When she told us that all planes had been grounded over the U.S., I remembered that my Dad was in California, and was supposed to fly back on September 11th. (He ended up driving back to Texas with his boss instead of flying). In lunch and in Journalism class, our teacher let us watch TV even though she was not supposed to. Later in the day during IPC, we were in the computer lab and our teacher gave us the day off and let us look on the internet about what was going on around the country. I came home that day and all day and night watched the news, and called family to make sure everyone was o.k. My friend Ricky's cousin, who is a stockbroker in NYC had a close call, he was supposed to have a meeting in the World Trade Center but was sick, so he couldnt go. That night I remember watching the news for a long time. So that was my September 11 story, a day we will never forget. Someone came up to me as I wondered the school halls before class and told me that the Whitehouse had been bombed. I thought for sure they were mistaken, and obviously they were. Still though, I hadn't heard the news. I noticed the students crowded around the TV the moment I stepped into my first period class. It was 9:00. I was in shock. I didn't really know what to feel at first, it almost didn't seem real. Needless to say we didn't get much work done in that class. However, the administration made the decision to not allow the students to watch the news for the rest of the day. Some of the more obedient teachers followed those instructions, and some of the smarter teachers ignored them. It was a very interesting day all around, one I'm sure I'll never forget. I was at work when everything occured and we don't have a radio or television access in my office. Everyone where I work was wandering around, asking everyone else if they knew what was going on. On the way home from work, I listened to the radio, trying to see what was going on, and what had actually happened. But I really didn't get the full picture until I atually saw it on TV when I got home. I sat there, glued to the screen, with my mouth hanging open, unbelieveing. Later that day, a friend and I went to town to get some gas because we heard gas prices were going to be shooting way up. The gas stations, the stores, everything everywhere was pakced with people who were preparing for a full-on war. I remember one time in particular, standing in the Wal-Mart parking lot and gazing around at the sky. There was something different in the air that day, something that you could almost see. The sky looked blank somehow, and full of life at the same time. Was it the spirits of those who had died in the plane crashes and on the ground? Was it God watching over us, and the fact that we could really feel it that day? The sky itself was too quiet with all the flights grounded. People were riding around with "NUKE 'EM ALL" written in shoe polish on the windows of their vehicles and red, white, and blue was everywhere, in every form you could think of. I PICKED IT UP AND ON THE OTHER END WAS MY DAUGHTER AND SHE WAS VERY UPSET. MY ALISHA IS A SOILDER IN THE US NAVY. SHE WAS STATIONED AT JACKSONVILLE HOSPITAL AND WORKS IN ELECTRONICS. SHE HAS BEEN IN THE NAVY FOR 6 YEARS NOW, AND HAS NEVER CALLED ME FOR HER WORK AT THE BASE. SHE STARTED TO TELL ME ABOUT WHAT WAS HAPPENING AND WHAT WAS GOING ON THERE. SHE ASKED ME A QUESTION THAT I DIDNT KNOW HOW TO ANSWER, SHE SAID MOM I WILL DO ANYTHING I HAVE TO DO , TO STAND BY MY COUNTRY AND MY COMMANDER AND CHIEF, BUT I AM AFRAID , IS THIS WRONG ? WHAT DO YOU TELL YOUR CHILD AT TIME LIKE THAT. SHE WAS ASSIGNED SECURITY PATROL ON THE BASE AND HAD TO CARRY A GUN, WITH ASHOOT TO KILL ORDER IF SOMEONE DIDNT STOP OR LEAVE AS TOLD. WE HAVE LIVED LIFES IN A STATE OF FREEDOM SO LONG THAT WE DONT UNDERSTAND ANYTHING ELSE. And when i got to my school all my friends asked me did you hear what happened, and i was no what happened. And my friends were saying that a plane hit the World Trade Center in NY. I couldnt believe it. I remember my first period teacher talking about a terrorist attack. But i still couldnt believe it or realize the full effects of what just happened. In my photo class which is 2nd period we watched it the whole period. And then i saw the 2nd plane hit. I was so shocked. I finally realized this is scary. I couldn't believe that terrorist could have the capability to attack the United States of America. I fianlly relized how vunerable everyone was. That anyone could get hurt and anytime. It was a very tragic time then. Even before this I didnt really know wat the World Trade Centers were until this happened. I didnt really know anyone who died in that attack and I thank God for that, But i cant imagine the pain these people are going through. What was really amazing was the unity of our country. thats wat I remember very well. On T.V how the fire fighters helped save so many people and the police officers to. I think when i look back on this. It will effect me forever. God Bless America !
