(Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.) I was in the military, preparing to go to work. I remember very vividly that I had my BDU bottoms on, the brown T-shirt, and only one black sock. A fellow soldier came in from next door in my barracks room and told me, "Come in here. Now." The sense of urgency in his voice was so dire that I came into his room with one sock on to watch the impact on his television. We stayed in that room until the very last moment, until we went to work, to find a colonel at the gate waving people away, telling us all to return to our rooms and get ready, because the Pentagon had come under attack and we might be next. What is your strongest memory of that day? I worked in a facility that we were not allowed to bring radios into. But a lot of us needed to know what was happening. My strongest memory is of people walking up to the building with radios in hand, wanting to know the most up to date information, then tossing them aside as they entered the building, because they couldn't take them inside. That little pile of handheld radios was very memorable..and very sad. How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally? It's a horrible event. A horrible event that has affected everyone. We can never do anything without someone raising the spectre of September 11th. The measures that will be taken in revenge, and the Patriot Act, George W. Bush trying to use it for politics...everything. I think it also showed me how trivial are the decisions that save people's lives. Many of my friends worked in the World Trade Center, and my dad would have been taking the PATH train that went underneath it at the time of the collapse. But instead, for various reasons, they all decided not to go into work that day until later. And by that time, they were safe. Except a woman that my father danced with at a wedding, that might have been his girlfriend. I can still see them dancing, sometimes, when I close my eyes and think about it. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11, I had my first two English classes of ninth grade students in the Taylor Allderdice High School library for orientation. At the end of the orientation at about 9:55, I was on my way back to my classroom to prepare for my senior classes when I heard the library aide talking to someone on the phone about a plane that had been hijacked. Nothing to get too excited about, I thought; unfortunately, plane hijackings had become fairly common events in our world. I wondered where this one had occurred, but I was not concerned enough to investigate further. I assumed I would get the details later on the news. After spending a free period in my room, I greeted the first senior student Steve Schuffert who arrived, as usual, well before the rest of the kids. Now Steve is a kidder, but when he said that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center, I knew he was serious and not making up a story just for the shock effect. I could not believe that something like this could happen, but when the students showed up for class, I knew that whatever I had planned for the day would have to be saved for another time. Most of the students had heard, and some had even seen on TV, some of the events of the morning, unlike myself. After hearing their speculation that Arab terrorists were behind it all, I did my best to counteract their dismay and anger by pointing out that we had thought the same about the Oklahoma City bombing and that even if it was Arabs who had done it, not all Muslims were extremists and wished us harm. Still, resentment was high, and many of the boys, especially, were ready to seek revenge on whoever had done this evil deed. In fact, revenge and their willingness to fight for the USA became a theme in the rest of the senior classes that I met later that afternoon, although by that time, many of the students had been picked up by their parents or had left school on their own. Allderdice High School is located in a section of Pittsburgh called Squirrel Hill which has a large Jewish population. Because of the circumstances and the uncertainty about what exactly was transpiring, many parents were alarmed that our high school could have been a target, also. We had recently experienced a multiple killing of ethnic minority members in Pittsburgh, and people were fearful, this time of something larger and much more sinister that we needed to guard against. As a result, by the end of the school day, most of the students had gone home. At lunch in the faculty room, we were in a daze and confused about how to cope with this tragedy. We heard about the son of one of the teachers who attended college in Manhattan and how he had witnessed some of the effects of the attack. He had called his mom and told her that he was going to stay with a friend to Brooklyn for a while, until he thought it was OK to return to his dorm. The events were just so staggering that it took all of our fortitude to survive until the end of the school day at 2:17 when the buses arrived to pick up the few remaining kids. When I got home, I collapsed in front of the television to view the events for the first time. How could someone hate our country so much that they would plan and execute such a plan? What kind of people were they? How could such a thing happen without our intelligence agencies knowing about it? I know that some political extremists are willing to die for a cause, and I know the mindset of certain enemies of the US; however, I felt at that time and still do, that whatever it takes to protect our people must be done, both militarily and politically. September 11, 2001 was exactly 11 days before my 13th birthday, and the day of my friend Kelly's birthday. I was not in a very excited mood to be heading off to my school. But in the last 10 mins of my global class the loud speaker came on. My principal at the time informed everyone in the school that two commercial airlines had hit the world trade center. I couldn't comprehend anything. It was wayy to much of a shock. As the day went by kids were being signed out and teachers were sending us down to guidance couselors. On my bus ride home I thought about what was going on and if people were ok. I didnt even bother to go to my house. I went to my neighbors and watched what had gone down all day. I was in such amazement that anything like this could be happening. I became so scared as I relalized that soo many people were down there. My father went down as a doctor to help. My mother was on call in her hospital waiting to see if they needed her to go down. My uncle a firefighter in rescue 2 was down there. I just knew he was. I was frightened that I would lose family. My father went missing for 2 days, my uncle for 10. He was found on my birthday, dead on floor 136 by the elevator. The whole idea hadn't hit me until six months after and still haunts me today. I can't imagine what people went through who workd in the world trade center, nor those who were on the planes that day. To have to call loved ones and tell them your not coming home to them. This world is ugly, but with the small help we give one another, everything can be rebuilt. One of my favorite quotes someone gave me is "What we do doesnt define who we are. What defines who we are is how well we rise after falling" Our nation did this for a short time. But we rose together and we need to continue that process everyday. My friend called me at 9 and said the Twin Towers were falling down. Being half asleep I thought it was like the Leaning Tower of Pizza. I turned on the tv and saw a horrific site. I was in disbelief. I felt volnerable. I could not believe that something like this could happen here, in the U.S. I contacted my father who works in the city. I found out that it was his day off. All of my uncles work in the city and one works in the Twin Towers. He reasured me that they were all ok and were sent to the north side of Manhattan. My Uncle Billy ran out of his tower when the first one got hit and he was also ok. I felt reasured. I did not know what to feel after that. It did not seem real for the longest time. Being a native New Yorker, it felt like something so personal was taken away from me. Some people question "where was God?" People may think that God was not there that day. I do not question that. I saw his presence, not in the act of hatred but in the bravery and acts of kindness of the men and women of New York's bravest and finest. God was in their hearts and their acts of bravery. My husband was getting ready to take him to work and I was watching my nephew. My brother who was outside at the time looked over at our neighbors T.V. and I heard him say "Oh my gosh!" He then turned on the T.V. in the apartment and I heard both him and my husband say "Oh my gosh!" I came out of the room and saw the second plane hit the towers. Then they showed the Pentagon and my brother said "I have to go to work now!" While they were gone I watched both the towers fall with my 2 year old nephew.I remember thinking what about all those poor people still trapped inside. Then my nephew asked me what was going on. I explained to him what happened that some people took some planes and crashed them into the two towers and the Pentagon and hurt a lot of people and some kids too. He looked at me with sad eyes and asked me why would someone do that for? I told him the truth that I didn't know why someone would want to hurt innocent little children. My 20 month old son, Kenny, had been up a lot the night before coughing. Also, I was 5 months pregnant and was just starting to get to that "uncomfortable at night" stage. I had had my ultrasound the day before and my husband and I decided to find out what we were having since we knew this was our last pregnancy. We were overjoyed to find out that we were having a girl! I couldn't wait to share the news with my friends at work. I was staying at my parent's house, as I had been doing for the past 15 months, because my Mom was helping my husband and I out by watching Kenny for us. He had some health issues and we were trying to keep him out of day care as much as possible. Anyhow, I was in the upstairs bathroom getting ready for work when the phone rang. I knew something was wrong because no one calls that early unless there is a problem. All I could think of was that one of my brothers or sister was having trouble. It was my brother calling from Boston telling us to turn on the TV because a plane had just hit the World Trade Center. My Dad was yelling at my Mom to turn on the TV and I was telling him to be quiet so he would not wake the baby. When the TV finally came on, I could not believe the images. It was so horrible to watch and think about what those people were going through but we honestly thought it was just a horrible accident. The three of us were horrified as we watched the second plane hitting the tower. We knew then that something was terribly wrong. I began to weep and felt as if I was going to be sick. I wanted to go upstairs and hold my little boy and shelter him from all of this but I didn't want to wake him from his sleep and from his innocence. After almost an hour, I finally had to tear myself away, as I had a long commute ahead of me and knew I would be late if I didn't leave at that moment. I turned on KFWB in the car and listened the whole way in to work. My husband and I kept calling each other to give each other updates. He was watching the TV at our home when the first tower fell. He started screaming, "Oh my God - it's falling - it's falling". I said a silent prayer that my co-workers were ok. We had a small office in one of the towers (the first one hit) and I knew there was a group of people from my office in NY that day for a Distributor/VAR Meeting. I am happy to report that all of my co-workers did make it out alive, including Michael Hingson who walked down some 78 flights of stairs with his guide dog, Roselle. I heard about the second tower falling from the Radio Announcer and I just started crying. I was surprised at the level of intensity of the pain I was feeling. I looked around on the freeway to see the faces of other people who were crying or trying to hold back their tears. We were all dazed and just looking at each other. It was like we needed to have some kind of human connection. At least that is how I felt. One thing I will never forget about the commute in that day (about 75 minutes) is how eerily quiet the skies were. Normally, I see many planes overhead but that day there were none. I knew the planes had been grounded but I kept looking up to see if there were any other highjacked planes headed our way. I remember being scared to death that I was on the freeways in Los Angeles, which seemed a likely target for more terror. I couldn't wait to get off the roads so I could feel a little more safe. I spent the rest of the day wondering when the West Coast was going to be hit with this wave of terror. Thankfully, it never did. Not a lot of work was accomplished that day. Most everyone spent the day talking with co-workers or calling loved ones. We would occassionally get email updates about our co-workers that were in New York to let us know that everyone had been accounted for and was alright. I spent some time trying to track friends down that live and work in NYC. I left the office early so I could beat traffic home. All I wanted to do was see my son and give hugs and kisses to him and all my family members. Even though I was not personally affected on 9/11/01, I feel that my life has definitely changed. It was hard when my daughter Emily was born 4 months later not to think, "What kind of world have I brought you into"? I know that our innocence as a country died that day and can never be reclaimed. I hold my family a little tighter these days and say a prayer of thanksgiving every day that we had another joyous day together. It will be a sad day when my children come to ask me about the events of 9/11/01 and where I was. I hope that I can convey the horror of the events that day; the fear and chaos as the day progressed and the anxiety we, as a nation, felt in waiting and hoping to find survivors. I hope I can make them feel the strength we had as we came together and the pride we felt and still feel for our country and all of the many heroes that arose from the rubble that day. We will never forget 9/11/01 and the people who gave their lives and I feel it is important to pass this on to our future generations so that they will never forget either. In closing I would like to thank all of the many volunteers, firemen and women, policemen and women, military personnel and the many others that have been so strong this past year. I turned in the TV and saw that hte morning news was showing a tall building ablaze. Suddenly I saw a large plane approaching and I thought it was a replay until I saw it stike the second tower. I immediately thought of all the people in these two towers who could not escape with the fires below them. I never expected that both buildings would collapse in only a few minutes. Thank God that mmany thousands were able to escape. But how heart breaking that nearly three thousand could not make it to safety. We will never forget them. Tell us your story: On 9/11/2001,I was doing my usual commute to NYC for a doctor's appointment I had.I live in Middletown NY and use the Metro-North to get to NYC.The train was just about to pull into the Hoboken NJ station when all the passengers and myself were looking out the windows of the train in shock because we all were less than a mile from the WTC and could see the first jet hitting the North Tower of the WTC.About a minute later,the train pulled into the station and I immediately went to the edge of the Hudson River and seen the WTC and I took photos of it with a disposable 35mm camera I had on me that day.I then went downstairs to the PATH(Port Authority Trans Hudson) train and went on the last train to go the WTC forever.I was told later this train was destroyed.All the trains,cars,boats,subways were all stopped then.I got out of the PATH and used an emergency exit in the lower concourse of the WTC to get out of the building.By this time,the debris was flying and people and tons of paper and all sorts of objects were flying around all over the place.The cars on the road near the entrance to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel(This is next to the WTC)were not permitted to use the tunnels either so Manhattan was closed,no way in or out until the officials decided it would be safe to do so.I seen many cars totally bewildered by the amount of debris flying but the most horrible thing I seen was people coming down.The cars that were near the building was hitting the people and debris coming down and it was a giant mess.I walked up a ways from the WTC in awe along the West Side Highway and I watched the other plane hit the South Tower.I then just got into a cab and went to my doctors appointment.Traffic was moving very slowly but I was watching out the rear window of the cab and watched in horror as the South Tower of the WTC started coming down.In a moment or so,then I watched the North Tower of the WTC come down.I was in awe of the entire event.By the time I got to my doctor,the Mount Sinai Hospital was already loading up with ambulances and helicopters full of injured people.I was in and out of the doctors office in a few minutes and I then went back to the area of the PATH at 33rd St. and 6th Avenue.It is a block away from the Empire State Buidling and I was feeling very unsafe there.The city was closed until about 3:00 in the afternoon.By then,the first movement was the NY Waterway Ferry.They were allowed to bring people out of NYC to the Hoboken Train Station and/or Weehawken NJ.I got on the boat and was watching the giant cloud of smoke from the WTC filling the skies.I have photos of that also that I took from the ferry boat with that same disposable 35mm camera on the Hudson River less than a mile from the WTC.Thank you for your attention to my story of horror on 9/11/2001. I was also studying Andy Warhol's work at the time... from there to these prints was just a natural progression. The images of the attack had been repeated so much in the media that people had been almost desensitized to its gravity. I call my mom around 8:15 in Florida to tell her we had arrived at St. Thomas. I then called my grandparent's in Houston and told them the same. Then...I called my X-Boyfriend, he told me to call when my phone was working. He had said to me, "You won't believe what just happened?" I was thinking something small, like he got a ticket or something. Then he told me a plane just hit the "World Trade Center." For the life of me, I couldn't picture what the "World Trade Center" looked like, but I knew it was in NY. I thought maybe it was a small plane that went out of control and went into the building. Then, he screamed, "Oh S***! Another just hit!!!" I was in total shock. I didn't know what to think. At that time I go to turn on the T.V., but are signal was not working. As our class worked on stories our principal came on the P.A. System and asked for complete silence because he had learned of an imprtant message. He said that an American Airlines flight had been hijacked and flown into the World Trade Center. This struck me really hard because as we were notified of this i was writing a story about terrorist. I immediately scraped the story in respect of the victims and their families. So our class immediatley walked to the Learning Resource Center were we watched the events of September 11th unfold. For the remainder of the day we began to hear different stories of what had happen. The remainder of the day was never the same as usual days. In this time of crisis Newfoundland really showed the world that we are great people,as many of ther international flights were redirected to St.John's and Gander,and many Newfoundlanders took these people off the planes and into their homes. Tell us your story: 8:00 am, September 11, 2001 We were starting the first surgical cases for the day, it was a typical day, we were sharing the normal comradery that usually takes place between the Surgeon, Anesthesiologist, and the nurses, I was writing on my patient's and I casually mentioned todays date is 9-11, we all laughed and carried on with our work, little did we know that before the hour was up how our world would change, no American could have imagined the horror of the senseless terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Approximately at 9:00 a.m. we received word that it was believed that the World Trade Center had been hit by a bomb, we tuned our radio to try to receive news from New York, the reports were a plane had crashed into WTC 1, and within minutes another plane had hit WTC 2, the live television coverage of that second plane hitting WTC2 has played over and over in my mind, at that time I was praying for all the employees of the Twin Towers, I did not know at that time that many fire fighters, policemen, and other civilian rescue workers had lost their lives, trying to do what they do, to try to rescue others, putting themselves last, fearlessly entering the burning buildings to try to save as many as possible. The sheer number of casualties were overwhelming. My heart goes out to all who lost a family member, friend, or other loved one that day. I am still very resentful to those responsible for chaning our world, my Father fought in World WarII, I had heard him speak with pride that war had never been waged against the USA by foreign powers against on American soil, BinLauden or who ever was responsible robbed all Americans that day, we can never take for granted our safety, whether on ground or in the air. We have to pray to our Lord, Jesus Christ, for wisdom and strength for daily living. We cannot understand why this happened, we never will in this lifetime. My husband and I had planned a trip to NYC the week of Thanksgiving, 2001, while we were there we were going to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary, we were able to take that trip, and twice during the week we went to Ground Zero, I felt a strong admiration for the workers working seemingly tirelessly 24 hours a day, digging so carefully, there was an eerie silence there, I felt that I was standing on hallowed ground, I felt the presence of souls there, it is hard to explain, that is why I told my husband, I have to go back at least one more time, I felt unrest at Ground Zero, I wanted to find some closure, but that was not to come. It has now been a year since the tragedy, I hope and pray that those who lost their loved ones are beginning to heal. May God be with you and hold you in the palm of His hands. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am the wife of a New York City Firefighter who resonded to the WTC on 9/11. He was supposed to come home after working a 24 hour shift, but like all the others, stayed to help. I called him at the firehouse as soon as the second plane hit. He told me he did not know if he was going to what is now called "ground zero". At 11:00 I drove to the firehouse where there were 50 to 75 firefighters, mostly from New Jersey who had volunteered to help. None of them knew my husband. He was not there, nor was the Engine or Rescue truck. I then picked up my son from school and went home to wait. From ground zero, he finally called me at 5:00pm, it was then I knew he was alive. He gave me a list of men who were with him and asked me to call their wives. He called me again at 11:30 pm still from ground zero, and again at 2:30 am from the firehouse telling me he would be sleeping there. A 1/2 hour later he walked thru my front door and I ran to him, crying, both of us. He kissed his mother, went to our sons room, who has cp, and kissed him gently while he slept. He then got a change of clothes and went back to the firehouse. He came home on 9/13, the next evening, and while I watched him sleep, words came to me... Always Hope: 9/13/01 I sat alone in silent prayer for your safe return, the phone it rang time and again, twas not your voice i heard. But those of loved ones far and near, I had no news for them, I asked them all to pray for you, they said "of course" again. "Please Lord bring him home to me we have so much to do, please let me kiss his lips once more and let him kiss mine too". We sat together hoping, your mother, son and I, watching closely to the news, don't want to say good-bye. I jumped each time the phone rang, and when it was your voice, I cried and fell straight to my knees, your cried, you had no choice. I followed your instructions to telephone the wives, and tell them that their mans OK, with each of them I cried. "They're blocks away from danger" I told them like you said, "they're all together working, much work to do ahead". Lord I know you heard me he's home with me its true, the hours they dragged on and on, exactly 42! Unspeakably. When I am at home alone, I still am caught by sudden tears. The news sets me off. Remembering locations in Manhattan stops me in the kitchen . . . the bathroom. I think back to September 11, 12, 13, and I cry somewhere between grief and stoicism. Days of tears. Swollen eyes. Heavy lids. Bloodshot rims. When will the muscle over my left eye stop jumping? And there is the guilt. The guilt of being a New Yorker, and not being in New York in this terrible crisis. I had to turn my eyes away from the television, away from the flatness of the grief on the faces of rescue workers. And worse, the news makes a show, a farce of it all, less than a month later. Red, white and , blue poodles? A young skates in Rockefeller Center on the morning news in memoriam to a brother who died in WTC. He?s dead. This isn?t for him. It?s her 15 minutes of fame. My students in class are acting out. Beyond stressed concerning midterms. Excessively verba. Laughing raucously about things that are not funny. Slowing down the assignments for them . . . for me. Sometimes I sit in my car at a stop sign, forgetting I am in my car. I?ve had the right of way at least twice and have lost time. My mind is on New York. I worried about my cousin Denise who works 4-5 blocks from ground zero (what a name for a place that was once busy and vibrant ? worked in Bankers Trust Plaza during highschool and undergrad). She had to return to work a week after the devastation because she works for board of ed/city. I talked to her about coming home for Thanksgiving. She got upset. Didn?t want me to get on a plane. She said she was afraid. I will broach the subject again later when all of this isn?t so raw. One of Denise?s children, Christina is dealing with all this in her own way. She?s 15. She said everyone was crying at her school. She described it calmly (though I know she?s been crying based on discussions with her mother). Children shouldn?t have to experience such things. I am an Air Traffic Controller at the Boston Air Route Traffic Control Center. I was working the morning of September 11, 2001. When the tragedies of that day began I was working a high altitude sector over Upstate New York. I never dreamed the events I was about to witness were possible. The situation began when another controller working the sector east of my sector called to warn me about American Airlines Flight Eleven (AAL11). "Don, keep an eye on American 11; we lost his transponder and nobody is talking to him." I turned on the "Primary Radar" which displays radar targets with no transponder and was able to monitor the position and direction (but not altitude) of AAL11. It was only a couple of minutes later that AAL11 turned about 150 degrees to the left and was heading for New York City. Not knowing AAL11's altitude or intentions, I immediately had to turn five aircraft in order to maintain at least five miles separation laterally. While I am working my sector to avoid AAL11, I'm thinking, "what's going on?" The only thing I can imagine is that AAL11 developed a major electrical problem and was diverting to New York City for an emergency landing. I was relieved from the sector and went on a break about 5 minutes before AAL11 crashed into the World Trade Center (WTC). As I was leaving the area that I work in, my supervisor said, "they think AAL11 was highjacked." I was surprised to hear this and really didn't believe it. How could somebody hijack an airplane in the United States? As I walked out of the control floor, I saw Operation Managers and our Traffic Management Unit Specialist manning phones. I am certain they were communicating with the FAA Command Center, New York Center, New York Approach Control and the military's North East Air Defense. I went to the building's cafeteria and sat down next to a co-worker. I said to him, "Craig, we're going to see AAL11 on the news tonight." Why's that?" Craig responded. I told him of the events and that the FAA was treating it as a hijack. Right then a manager ran into the cafeteria and turned on the television. CNN just broke for "Breaking News" and started showing live pictures of the WTC with smoke filling the sky. Before they said anything, I knew AAL11 had hit the building and that it was intentional (some deranged person). I looked at Craig and said, "Oh my God! I can't believe they flew that fucking plane into that building!" We sat there and watched in disbelief as the reporters were trying to guess what had hit the building and why. I knew what it was and that it was deliberate. Then to everyone's horror, on live television, a second aircraft flew into the other tower. I knew immediately it was not a deranged individual but a coordinated attack. I sat next to Craig for about twenty minutes, both of us watching TV in disbelief. When my break was over I returned to the area and returned to the same sector I was at before. It was not long after I sat down that somebody said, "the Pentagon just got hit!" Then the supervisor answered the phone and announced to everyone in the area, "Get everyone on the ground, nearest airport, we're shutting down the system!" The term SCANTANA came to mind. SCANTANA means that in the event of a war, we need to get all non-military aircraft out of the sky and turn off the NAVAIDs (navigational beacons). In very little time the skies over the United States were empty except for military aircraft. An hour later we were ordered to evacuate our building because of some threat. We gathered at a hotel just down the road and waited for further instructions. Three controllers per area were told to return to work; everyone else was sent home for the day. I was one of those who returned to work. It was very eerie walking back down through the control floor. We are open and staffed with controllers 24 hours/ 7 days a week/ everyday of the year and to not see anyone sitting at the radar scopes was chilling. I finished up the rest of my shift and went home to questioning neighbors and friends. At the time, I couldn't talk about it except to say, "yes I was working while it happened." He told me our country was being attacked and to turn on the news. When I did, it was like reliving April 19, 1995 all over again. My heart went out to the victims, the survivors and all those affected. Those of us here in Oklahoma understand. And I would like to let you know there is hope. Tell us your story: I was so excited to be traveling around Europe, visit places that I had only read about.....as a student in Washington DC my final destination was Seville, Spain. All day I had been enjoying the ambiance of Venice, Italy.....getting lost among the passageways, bartaring in the streets and feeding pigeons in St. Mark?s Square. My friend and I decided to stop in a bar around 7:00pm which means it is already 1:00pm in both NY and DC. What we see puts us into shock.....written across the bottom is written AMERICA UNDER ATTACK! But the rest of the news is all in Italian...We rushed to a local internet cafe where several other Americans were, like ourselves scrambling to contact friends in NY and DC and to find out not only what happend, but why. There as the story unfolded my tears fell as well. Even to this day the enormity of it all, the millions of people?s lives it changed forever and the future consequenses - weigh heavy on my heart. Two weeks later, I am still in Europe and the amazing support in every country is overwhelming. Complete strangers feel the need to convey their sympathy. For several days I saw all the flags at half mast and flowers pile the entry ways of all the embassies. Since I was here both before and now after the attack on the United States, I have seen a new respect develop in many Europeans. They see the wisdom of our leaders, the motivation to move on and the spirituality that resides at the core of it all. And now its not just Americans that say "God Bless America" but all the citizens of the World. Tell us your story: MY EXPERIENCES OF 911 It was about 9:00 am and I was getting dressed for my 10 am sociology class, when I received a phone call from a friend saying that a plane had crashed in to the world trade center. She told me to watch the news on CNN so I did, however I was in such a rush to get to school to print my assignment so I did not pay much attention to it. Anyway she called back and told me that a second plane had hit the second tower, I was really surprised but I kept doing my thing to get to school. Being a new student to the USA and the school I didn't know that my school was so close to the W.T.C. I went on with my journey to school. However when the train arrived at Wall Street the operators informed that the passengers that because of the incident we have to evacuate the train at this point. As the operators opened the doors of the train I was so surprised to see ash blowing everywhere in the subway, I had was to put the end of my shirt over my nose and headed towards the street. I was very surprised when I arrived on the street the was debris every in the air, objects was all blowing all over the place, the sounds of sirens and seeing smashed windows of vehicles. Not even the police know where to direct us, this was very scary, I saw people moving in all different directions. Not knowing where to go I just followed the largest crowd, as I run/walked I recalled this woman screaming and shouting "where is the United Nations buildings". It was like in the movies; I actually thought that I was going to die. Realizing the depth of the situation and the geographic location of my school to the W.T.C. I started worrying for my sister who had left for a class half an hour earlier in the fiterman building. I was also worried about my girlfriend who works in the one Penn plaza. I tried calling both of them but to no avail, my cell phone could not work or no phone box on the street where I was. Things get a little calm as we head away from the ashes and debris in the air. There were people on the street handing out water and paper towels. The next major hurdle was to walk over the bridge to get into Brooklyn, I can recall that a police officer telling the crowd that they should avoid bridges and large buildings. Because there are other planes are in the air with the hijackers. It was so frightening to imagine. So I sat in a nearby park for a few terrified and worried about my sister. As soon as things clam down that is when US fighter planes were in the air we was told that it was safe for us to walk across the bridge into Brooklyn. As I walked with a group of ladies from Staten Island I tried to disguise my fears to help build their confidence. finally we manage to get across the bridge and into downtown Brooklyn, we the hitch a ride with some strangers to Nevins street. On arriving there were places, which provided bathroom services and phone calls. I made full use of this and call my sister to my greatest surprised she was home safe. My spirited had lifted greatly. As I went outside the facility I saw people on the street handing out food, drinks and other forms of refreshments. I then headed to the train station to get home, however only the L.I.R.R. was in service so I took it to the closet point and took a cab home. On arriving home I remembered that I was glued to the television and on the phone calling my family all over.
