I came home from work and went straight to bed, only to have my husband come in around 11:00 A.M. and wake me to tell me to turn on the news because the World Trade Centers had been hit by airplanes. Disbelief hit me. I though surely he was mistaken, he gets things all mixed up sometimes. How could this happen? I sat in my bed for the rest of the morning watching the coverage of what the day had entailed. Horror, fear, and mostly anger cut through me. How dare soemone do this to OUR country. Tears of sorrow and anger seemed to take over. I prayed for the ones lost that day, I prayed for New York, I prayed for the people who were wondering if their loved ones were alive and I prayed for our country. Later that afternoon I had to get ready for work, the TV was never turned off. I listened for any kind of news as I got ready for work. I listened to the radio on my hour long commute to work. After I got to work, took report (I am a registered nurse) we kept the TVs on and watch all night during the 12 hour shift. All of us wondering what can we do to help. I knew I was going to get the flag my husband and I always wanted for our house. But that didn't feel like I was doing enough. I still feel like I haven't done enough. Since 9-11-01 I felt more patriotic than ever, I am so proud to be an American. Just of an ordinary person that was shocked awake by the horror of the acts of a few cowards. My boyfriend and I were sitting in the living room of the house that we share together with my two children and my grandaughter. The TV was on to the morning talk show that we normally watch, to get the just of the day, when we were in awe of the second plane flying straight into the second tower of the Trade Center. I am from NJ by birth so I remember when the buildings were put up. What an awesome sight they were, pristene and new. Now they were on fire and on the verge of collapse. Like the reporter said of the Hindenburg, "OH THE HUMANITY" I sat in shock and disbelief. My brain could not comprehend what it was seeing. My ears could not believe what they were hearing. I work for the government, like probably half of the town, in one way or another. I called my job and they were in the process of evacuation of the base, only active duty personnel the rest of us were not allowed on the base. I was concerned for the folks that I work with as well as for the rest of the world let alone the rest of the country. Those poor people didn't have any idea what fate awaited them or their loved ones left behind. After the phone call to one of my co-workers, the rest of the day is much of a blur. You cant see much when your eyes are filled with tears for people that you dont even know. And your head pounds from the thunder between your ears because from the rush of images of towering infernos. I love my country and my fellow man. I hope that we find the cowards that are responsible for this tragidy of life. My grandaughter will not know how it feels to not worry about someone knocking down your place of work, and taking you on a one-way trip to oblivion. God Bless the Heros, and the USA. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Since I work from home, I had gotten up as usual and turned on the computer and then the TV. It was 9:00 in the morning. Of course, the news of the first plane hitting the North Tower was on every channel and, since New York City is one of my favorite places, I was glued to the television. I then watched as the second plane hit and the enormity of what was happening filled me with the greatest fear I've ever known. I was, at the time, 9 months pregnant and my emotions were uncontrollable. I was unable to wrap my mind around what was happening. I frantically tried to reach my husband and when I finally reached him, he didn't believe what I was telling him...that our world had gone crazy and was literally falling apart. Then, as I described to him what I was seeing on the television, the first tower fell. I fell to the ground in disbelief and despair. It's difficult to recall specifically what I did that day...I remember the feelings far better than the details. My initial fear and disbelief evolved into anger and the deepest grief for our country and the thousands of people who lost their lives while simply going about their daily business. I was also terrified for my unborn child...I didn't want to bring my child into a world in such chaos, a world where I could not protect him from evil. The intensity of emotion and grief is indescribable. Twenty-three days later, I gave birth to my son, Roman Joseph. What great joy in such a terrible time! I felt it drew me even closer to those who lost fathers, mothers and children. Now as a mother, I feel more empathy than ever before in my life. My feelings and emotions are raw and true. It is now September 11, 2002. A year has passed and a lifetime. The feelings I experienced one year ago are the same today as then. It is still hard to wrap my mind around this event. It is unbelievable yet brutally real. I believe in the strength of America. I know that we will survive but I don't think we will ever truly recover. Tell us your story: It was the second Tuesday of my senior year of high school, and it wasn't until the very end of first period, US Gov't class, that the principal made an annoucement that the World Trade Centers - both of them - had been hit by airplanes, and the Pentagon (only a few miles northeast of us) had been hit as well. What the heck did you say to that? I was surprised to find that I could feel my mind rejecting what the principal had said; part of me simply refused to believe it. And the idea that it was an attack? No; it had to be coincidence. No, it couldn't be coincidence. Cold reality hit me when I looked into a classroom with a TV to see the burning towers. They replayed the footage of the second tower being hit. Again, and again; it couldn't be an accident; that plane meant to hit the WTC. 22 minutes later, while I was sitting in my Geoscience classroom with my eyes glued to the TV like everyone else's, I watched the second WTC tower fall. I will never, ever, for the rest of my days, forget what the CNN reporter said. "Oh my god," he gasped, voice dry and horrified. "There are no words." There are no words. I was watching people die, and I burst into tears at the knowledge, drawing the eyes of the entire classroom. How could they not be crying? They just saw 1500 people die! We were all in shock. What more is there to say? I went home early that day and watched TV and commiserated with friends online. It's burned on my memory as if branded. And so it shall always be. My wife was asleep and I was not really concentating on the TV until I saw the burning buildings. I was shocked and scared. I got sick to my stomach and went on to watch the coverage non-stop. I could not get the images of people jumping out of my head. To this day I think of them and it pains me still. I have nightmares about what it must have been like for the people trapped.And I can't help but dream of myself being trapped and having to jump out of the windows. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11, 2001, I was at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Illinois, where my daughter Catherine had undergone two open heart surgeries a week and two weeks earlier. She was asleep and I was sitting next to her bed watching a morning news program on the TV. The program was interrupted to show the result of the first plane hitting the tower. It was shocking, but no one seemed to be thinking it was an attack. It wasn't long, maybe 20 or 30 minutes, when the second plane smashed into the other tower. Then it became evident this was no accident. The imploding of the two towers was unimaginable. I was riveted to the TV for the rest of the day and the subsequent days. I will always associate the two events, my daughter's heart surgeries and the 9-11 terrorist attacks. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Being in Australia, it was late at night when the news first broke. MUm and I were watching the TV and the news of the first plane hitting scrolled across the bottom of the screen. At first we thought it was an accident. A few minutes later we knew it wasn't because the news of the second plane hitting came through. Every channel went to cover what was happening. We watched for a few hours before mum went to bed, she just could watch it anymore. I don't know why I stayed up. I watched it all night until I had to go to work. I cried the whole night. After years of seeing disaster movies you'd think we'd all be used to images like these but there's something very horrifying about knowing they are real people and they really are dying. But the most heart wrenching moment wasn't seeing the planes go in, or seeing the people jump from the building with no hope of reaching the ground safely. The most emotive image was that of a woman standing in the middle of the street covered in dust and smoke, crying for her friends and maybe relatives who were still in the WTC buildings. I was working at a primary school teaching year two as part of my teaching degree. I got to school having had no sleep and had to discuss with the other teachers what we were going to tell the children, if we were going to make a whole lesson of it or just let them ask whatever they needed to in their own time. The teacher whose class I was on and I decided we'd just have a bit of a discussion with the class, nothing too heavy, after all they were only seven years old. Then we gave them a few minutes to draw or write what they felt, or they could come and ask us questions. One boy's parents knew someone who worked in one of the towers but he didn't really grasp the enormity of the situation, he drew a really good picture though. Later that day we had an assembly because it was Education Week and the classes were all putting on performances for the parents. The principal made a nice speech and we had a minutes silence. We've had our own tragedies since then, with the events in Bali bringing the threat of terrorism very close to home, but we will never forget the tragedy of September 11 as that was our wake-up call. It is up to us, as a global community to come together to stand up to these cowards who seek to destroy what is different from themselves. We should strive to make the world a place of understanding and acceptance, no matter what a persons race, religious beliefs or background. We are all one race, the human race. We should embrace diversity within our countries and within our communities. We need to teach ourselves about different cultures because ignorance breeds fear and fear breeds intolerance. It doesn't matter who you are, what you do, or why you do it. If you can say that you've tried your best to accept people for who they are rather than the preconceptions you may have about them or their background, then you can be proud of yourself because it takes intelligence to see through the preconceptions. Let every day be a reminder of the greatness of the diversity we enjoy in being part of this global community and that no matter how many attacks we survive, no matter how many wars we fight, no persons is worth as much dead as alive. Make every day the best it can be by doing some good deed, whether it's opening the door for someone with their hands full or saving someones life. Cherish every day as if it's your last and tell your partner you love them, make peace with your family, or do something you might never do otherwise. I was watching the news alone in the lunch room when the local new channel had urgent news in from NY of a fire at the WTC, i continued to watch and wasn't really sure what was going on, There was some talk of an attack, then the second plain hit! i ran to the front office and told everyone that was working. I guess it didn't set in to them what i was telling them, because they just looked at me half asleep. I then went back to watch the tv slowly workers walked in, soon it sank in what was going on. I just wanted to go home and call my 7yr. old son, he lives with his mom and stepdad who is in the Army at Ft. Knox, KY. I called as soon as i could get through, it was amazing of how busy the lines were, Paul(sons stepdad) answered I asked him if he was watching what wasgoing on , he informed me that he didn't know until he was woken up and put on stand-by, by the army. I was happy to hear that at a moments notice that the US armed forces was ready to defend our freedom, and protect our home land. We continued to conversate about what was going on and if he had any info. I heard my son in background asking Paul if that was "dad" on the phone paul said yes and gave my son the phone, the first words out of my sons mouth was "are you okay, pop's" here i was worried about my son who was almost 2000 miles away and to hear that i knew he was okay. i said yes and we exchanged Ilove you's, and we talked for at least an hour. It was hard i just wanted to hold and protect my son from what ever the future was holding. it was time to say our goodbye's and he told me not to worry cause Paul and his mom would take care of him and his soon to come baby sister. because in his words "we have tanks and god". When they reported the first plane crashing, I thought there must have been an airtraffic controller problem. Being from New York, I could no imagine what we would soon learn. I called my wife and told her to turn on the T.V. I then called New York, work...everyone I knew! Then the second plane hit! I told my wife at that moment our way of life in America has just changed forever. I knew we were then under attack. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Last year, September 11, 2002 was the most tragic day I have ever experienced in my life. When I first herd about it I was in school. They made an announcement saying that the world trade towers were hit and they collapsed. We got out of school early that day because of what had happened. When I got home the only thing that was on television was news about what had happened. Terrorists from Afghanistan high jacked four American planes. They crashed two of them into the world trade center towers. The towers caught of fire from the planes fuel. After about an hour after the towers got hit they collapsed, killing thousands of people. September 11th did not have a big affect on me or my family. It did not have a big impact on us because no one we knew died that day. But we felt sorry for the people who died or lost loved ones that day. It had an impact on my generation because this is probably the biggest tragic event that will happen in our lives. America has changed a lot since September 11th. It has made children motherless. Fatherless, and even parentless. Also people have lost there husbands, wives, friends, family members, and loved ones. Air ports have tons of security to make sure there are no weapons, bombs, or anything else that could harm someone. My life has changed a little since September 11th. I am a little scared that people will come again and kill more people. I also am kind of scared to go on an airplane. This past summer I went on a cruise and we had to fly to Florida, and I did not want to fly down to Florida but we had to. When I got on the plane I was scared, but everything turned out to be just fine! The world will always remember September 11th. We will remember what happened that day and pass on the story of what happened, to generation to generation. The United States of America will always be united. My mom told me to watch the news & then I saw it, on cnn ther was a reporter in New York city talking about something when suddenly, behind him I saw a plain headed strait for the twin towers!! I called my mom out of her bed room to come & see this. All of a sudden the plain collided into one of the towers!! I couldn't belive it. & if that wasn't enough, then there was another one that did the same thing!! From then on I knew that America would never be the same. While many people lost family and friends in the incident, I lost no one. Possibly this is the reason why I've gotten over the terrible terrorist events quicker than some. It's not that I'm disrespectful or that I don't care, I just haven't felt the same impact as some people have. Though I don't share the same grief as many, I will respect all that are still grieving and that are still in disbelief. My heart goes out to all that have been hurt in any way and that are still recovering. One of my friends hat told me that a plane had went into the Pentagon. I thought that she was lying until I turned on the news, and saw them replaying the planes hitting the WTC. I couldn't, and still really can't grasp the concept that some one could hate a group of people enough to take so many innocent lives. It stills seems like a movie to me, it's just to real to be real. I've always had a fear of flying, after 9-11 it only got worse. Although I am still scare that these attacks were just the beginning I refuse to let someones hate for my nation dictate how I live. I'm worried because my brother is in the Army and he is being sent out to Bosnia. The question to me is no longer, "Where is Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban soldiers", but what are we going to do IF we find them. We can't punish them a little, nor alot. If we punish them a little then the U.S citizens will call for another war. If we are harsh with the punishment than there will be more acts of terrorism on the U.S in honor of Bin Laden and his soldiers. Sept. 11 (9-11) was truly a "911" call for us as Americans to realize that there isn't a real right answers. For every action( good or bad) there will be a reaction. Tell us your story: It was one of those clear fall days that is so incredible in the City because they are in such stark contrast to the norm and the surroundings. I had just dropped my son off at his Brooklyn elementary school and returned home. My husband, who was supposed to already have left for a meeting in downtown Manhattan, was standing in front of the television: "something awful has happened. a plane crashed into one of the trade towers." i knew immediately it was no accident -- the day was too clear and the towers too tall for someone to accidentally fly into them. just as i was telling him this the second plane hit. i heard the explosion and felt my house shake. i thought immediately of my neighbor who worked across the street from the Towers and of my son, suddenly so far away. I walked outside to see the impossibly blue day suddenly clouded by gray, debris already starting to float across the river to my house, my neighborhood: bills of lading singed from fire; an insurance claim form; an improbable agronomy of new york state list. I rushed to pick up my son, cancelled his dental appointment -- the receptionist couldn't quite understand the urgency to cancel! -- and walked through my culturally diverse neighborhood looking into the ghostlike faces of people I would never have noticed before. I waited for word from my neighbor, who narrowly escaped a fireball at Century 21 and his wife, who witnessed it all from her office in downtown Brooklyn. Walking home a flaming briefcase landed at her feet, a burning sock landed on her companion's head. Nothing seemed real, not like a movie, but like a nightmare from which there is no escape: '"wake up, wake up!" I called my neighbors, police officers who had helped me rid my neighborhood of drug dealers earlier in the summer, but they were already at Ground Zero. I prayed for them and their families, all cops and firefighters. I prayed for my son's soccer coach, a firefighter -- he was missing for many hours -- and for one of the coaches who didn't make it. And I prayed for all of the kids in my son's school, many, as it turned out, who lost a parent or relative to the massacre. But mostly I cried. I find myself still crying even though I've moved away from the City, a move planned before the tragedy, but one done with more urgency afterwards. Now I live an hour away, but there's not a day that goes by that I don't remember the sounds, the smells, the smoke, the sadness... but I have hope for the future. I have to. I have children. I remember walking into my Study Skills class, my teacher turned on the T.V. and we all sat down and watched as plane's went flying through the "Twin Towers". I was very sad when I saw innocent people jumping from the towers. After that I saw pitures of people who died in the crashes. I also saw people running away from the buildings, and then I saw the first tower colapse. I witnessed alot of things on that day. It was very devastating to many people. My life has changed a little since Septmber 11, 2001. I am more patriotic and a lot more caring to others. I stand proud when I say the "Pledge of Allegiance". I also pray every night for my family and myself. Other people's lives have changed also. They fly american flags all day long. They wear red, white and blue for remembrance. I think September 11th should be recognized every year, also all of the people who died should be honored every year. The "Twin Towers" should be remembered because they were the tallest buildings in New York. The firemen and police officers should be remembered (they helped clean up the buildings and also saved lives.) I think we should make September 11th a holiday of rememberance. I also hope that the people who died should get there names on a plaque, also the firemen and police officers should have a special plaque. My family didn't fly a flag. I wish we would have, because everyone eles did. I have two in my bedroom above my bed, I look at them every night. They remind me of that day. My feelings have changed about the flag. I like to look at it. When I look at it, it reminds me of September 11th. Sometimes I dream of it, also I like to think about the flag and how we got our freedom. Tell us your story: I was in my 8th reading class ( 2ed hr) and we were all working on some writing thing our teacher mr. van rossem had assigned us. I was driving to GSA on the Guanus expressway when the second plane hit the south tower right before my eyes. At that point it didnt take a rocket scientist to realize that it was an attack on this great country. I got into the emergency lane of traffic and headed for the battery tunnel thinking maybe i could help. Behind me was Rescue # 5 from the 160 firehouse on Staten Island witch is two blocks from where i was born and raised. When i came out of the battery tunnel ,i parked my pickup truck on the corner of West street. I grabbed my camera ,which i carry with me all the time,, and started shooting pictures.. My better judgement told me not to go down to the towers. I guess i knew from past safety and fire training that jet fuel burns at 2000 degrees plus and can melt steel .. When i saw Rescue 5 make that right turn for the towers, i felt scared for them.. Im standing there in the street talking to a detective from the NYPD saying oh my god, the people are jumping, two and three at a time and there is nothing we can do about it. The flames were shooting from the towers ,they were a purplish red color like a furness. I told the detective that unless im very wrong, the towers are gonna fall. It wasnt thirty seconds later that the south tower started to fall, people just stood there in shock watching it come down. It sounded like ten pile drivers all working at the same time as each floor crashed onto the floor beneath it. As the giant cloud of hot ash was comming at us you can hear people screaming from down the street. I stood there in shock clicking my camera but never looking into the viewfinder. My pickup truck was parked in the street with the keys still in it. I thought i would make my get away in it. Thats what i thought. This guy jumps in it and takes off heading for the Staten Island ferry. Now what do i do,i run into this loading dock in one of the apartment buildings on West street, a police officer with the name tag Taylor joins me. Together we try to kick down the door on the platform of the loading dock,a third men joins in but the door wouldnt budge. Now the dust is overwelming us so we wrapped our shirts around are heads, we made our way about fifty feet down West street where we found two big glass doors that were the entrance to an apartment building. I put my boot through the glass door which was locked and started running into the lobby. We ( officer Taylor and myself) ran about twenty feet down the hallway and then stopped, like we were thinking with the same mind, we looked at each other and said, we have to go back , the people are out there. We started throwing people into the doorway. All you can hear in the street was Oh my god ,Oh my god. There was one lady sitting on the curb with a plastic bag over her head, she was ready to pass out. I took the bag off and carried her into the building. We got about 30 or so people into that building and out of harms way. About ten minutes later i said my goodbyes and headed south , maybe i would find my truck down by the ferry. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11th, 2001 has gone down in history as a time in America's history we will never forget, America's darkest day. But as I got up for class just like every day of the week, dressed, and put on my heavy book bag, I had no idea how heavy America's heart would soon be. It's hard to believe that as I trudged up Bascom Hill, staring at the statue of Lincoln that stands at the top, how a country known for it's freedom was being attacked by those whom hoped to not only bring death to citizens, but to the unity that the United States prides itself in. It's funny, I didn't turn on the news like I normally did each morning, but most likely if I did the attack would have been yet to occur. I was not until I walked into my class that I heard students discussing a plane. A plane that had crashed into one of New York's Twin Towers. None of us new what was to come, and I set the disaster aside as a mere accident, not a carefully thought out plan to bring death to thousands. I don't know how I went the whole day on campus without realizing the sheer magnitude of what was transpiring. It was not until I walked to the bookstore, that I noticed everyone quiet, everyone watching tv monitors, and it was then that I saw more than just a plane crash. I saw a terrorist attack. I rushed back to my dorm, to find my roommate in front of the tv in awe, as was I. I had lived this day knowing nothing, naively thinking that there weren't people out there that would intentionally crash a plane into a New York sky scraper. But my trust, my belief that no one could commit such an act was soon replaced by fear and anger. The images I remember most are of those downtown, holding up pictures, frantically interviewing with reporters describing their loved ones, whom later as we would find out, most were already gone. The amount of fear and grief that spread across campus was evident. I sat up in my dorm building 9 stories in the air, and thought about how I would escape if such a terror attack would invade our campus community. I was scared and this topic, 9/11 and the fear which invaded America, but only pulled us closer was discussed in classes across campus in the next week. I will never forget my Political Science class. We postponed lecture and were instructed to write. Write a letter to be opened 20 years from 9/11, by ourselves, or a loved one if the world should be such that we pass on. I remember writing that letter, and hoping I would live to have kids, live to see this country progress. Hoping that those responsible were brought to justice, and that this country would live to see the day where peace is possible. I still have that letter, and I have lived to see this country come together in a time when we needed to do so the most. God Bless America, and God bless the victims and their families.
