I was sitting at my breakfast table, hurrying down my meal, because it was time for me to go to work. I heard it on the radio and I immediately turned on the television. I first thought that it was a scene from a movie. As I watch the news coverage, reality set in. I was heart broken and concern. I thought about all the lives that were in that building and the families they represented. How devastating it would be to be in that situation. I knew several people would be injured because the workday was just beginning. Just at that moment the other plane hit the second tower. I was floored. I knew at that point that this was not a stunt or accident, but we were under attack by someone, but whom?. I was fearful for the people in the towers. I could just realize how frighten they were and how many were injured. I continued to prepare myself for work. It was very difficult to move from the television. I prayed for those involved in the incident. As time went on and the news came about the Pentagon and the plane crash in Pennsylvania, I began to wonder what was next. Are there any attacks planned for my city? I then left my home for work. Praying that my city was ok...I phoned my husband to touch bases with him. He was ok. I was thankful. I checked on my children schools. They were ok too?. We I arrived to work, everyone was in amazement as they watched the news broadcast. We could hardly believe what was going on. All sort of debates were going on throughout the office. We could barely get any work done. Everyone was so concerned about our country. I can truly say, ?September 11, 2001 is a day a will always remember and honor the people who lost their lives.?. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Introduction to the Peace Project book entitled "The Road to Peace, the Road Less Taken." The peace project became a part of my syllabus for the Fundamentals of Design class after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. This visual book is a project exploring peace and peacemakers. I introduced the project by asking my students to define a peacemaker. The class determined that a peacemaker is an active maker of peace in a conflict situation, not simply a peaceful person. A peacemaker uses and promotes non-violent means in the struggle to resolve conflict or fight oppression. Peacemakers are not always political figures. Artists may be peacemakers through the production of visual art, writing, music or performance that promotes peace or exposes oppression. With this definition, we constructed a list of possible peacemakers and each student researched two candidates. The class members practiced working collaboratively and making decisions by consensus throughout this project. During a ?teach-in,? students reported on their candidates and the group approved those that fit our definition of a peacemaker. Students then gathered photographic portraits, biographical information, quotes, and landscape photographs for each peacemaker. The visual book began as a watercolor mural keeping in mind that it would be folded into a Japanese Fold-Out book later. The peacemakers are ordered by geography, allowing for huge leaps between countries and continents, and linked by ?the road to peace? that runs through each landscape. The background paintings represent the site of the peacemakers? work. Students found it especially challenging to blend one landscape into another and coordinate their plans with the students on either side. The motto for this project quickly became ?we can not achieve peace without learning to work together.? Each student was responsible for two peacemakers, but students also worked on each other?s backgrounds when needed. Biographies for each peacemaker aim to provide some background information on the conflict they addressed and the non-violent means they used. Many of our peacemakers received the Nobel Peace Prize. Too many of them were assassinated for their views. Through this project I hope the class members, and the viewers of this book, learned about collaboration, non-violent conflict resolution, contemporary peacemakers and the positive use of propaganda. It soon became apparent that this was becoming a big issue, so I woke up my wife and we watched the news. By this time there had been 3 crashes, flight 93 was in the air, and the two towers were up. This was at midnight our time, and later on 12 September I had to run a major Shell/Rotary/CPA/Government workshop for young entrepreneurs. This was a big affair, with the best accountants and tax experts we could arrange. We had large two large screen projectors for presentation support, and for the 30 minutes "arrival and settling" time, these were showing the news. Time after time the second 767 flew into the WTC. At 6pm I turned that off, and didn't quite know how to start. In retrospect, I belive I was traumatised to an extent, and still wonder, as I board my Monday morning B767, how it was for those people. This was especially so yesterday (11 Sep 2006) ... the only B767 flight from Australia's second largest city to the Nation's capital, on the 5th anniversary of 911, and in the air at the same time. Nevertheless, I'm very disappointed with what America did in the Middle East ... and I say this as an American citizen. I was not convinced about the WMD, and I could not see the justification for attacking Iraq. When I get a chance I watch the Jim Lehrer show which honours the 20 or so people killed in Iraq each day, and I wonder what this is all for. The main thing that disappoints me, and I said this in a letter I sent to the NY Times before the invasion (no ... not published), is the precedents that are being created in the last 50 or so years. My father was at Pearl Harbour, and flew in B24s in the 5thAAF in the Pacific War. Defending the country was the right thing to do. Korea and Vietnam were less convincing arguments. But now we are at the point where we invade a country ... for what reason? Just because we can? As an American child living in New Guinea after the war my vision of my country was that portrayed Norman Rockwell in the Saturday Evening Post. Can America be like that again? No we can't go backwards ... but moving forwards I'd like to see America adopt some old principles of aspiring to be a fairer country internally and externally. We all thought she was playing.Why because i never thought about it why any one would want to hit the world trade center. My teacher turned on the T.V so we can all see and hear what is going on. After new seconds later we saw the pentagon hit. That was when I started to cry. why because one of my friends dad works at the pentagon. I did not know what part of the building his office was on but i just knew that some was not right. My first thoughts again turned to the senseless carnage of the previous Tuesday. As I lay there I could hear my son restlessly moving around in his bed. He hasn?t slept well since the great evil of the day that turned our world around and I was hoping that he would begin to settle into his normal routine. But I could tell from the sounds that he was still having trouble. And again I found myself angry that the faceless cowards had brought pain to my son. As I lay there I decided that we should do an activity together that would bring back some normalcy to his life. I would need my chainsaw later in the day and that meant I would have to go up to our land to get it from the shed. I thought perhaps I could take him with me. We could stop at the store and get a little something to eat along the way. The radio in my old truck was turned to a country station as we made the 12-mile journey to the land. Wyatt eating his doughnut and I was sipping my coffee as we went on our way. Then my son said, dad, is that the woman with the cell phone? I wasn?t really paying attention but then heard a woman?s voice on the radio. What cell phone I asked? You know, the woman in the building talking to the fireman. It was then that I remembered the news report about the trapped woman who had called 911 from beneath the rubble. No Wyatt, she?s at home now. I didn?t tell him her home was with the Lord, as the chance of survivors has grown slim. And I knew that the pictures in his mind wouldn?t go away. At least for today. For him, for me or for my countrymen. And I wondered how other parents were dealing with this. The morning was beautiful with the eastern sun still low in the sky shinning through the trees. There was no wind and it was particularly still in the woods. The silence was wonderfully therapeutic and I could tell that Wyatt was enjoying this early morning adventure with his dad. Since we had a couple hours before church I asked him if he'd like me to make a fire in the pit. He was excited about that idea so I did. The wood was a little damp so the fire put out a lot of smoke. As the smoke wafted through the tree's it gave off sort of a misty look. And the sun?s rays were clearly seen coming through the mask of smoke. Wyatt was quite taken with the beauty of it and said, Dad, from now on when planes crash into buildings we will do this. Not quite onto his train of thought I said, do what Wyatt? He said come to the land and have a fire. I asked him why that would be helpful and he said because it's so beautiful that it makes me forget the burning buildings. For the umpteenth time since Tuesday, I held him close to my chest so that he couldn't see the tears rolling down my cheeks and told him that yes, we will do this everytime the planes hit the buildings. Tell us your story: I was sitting in my consumer management class and the "class clown" came in and told us all that a plane had hit the trade center building. Our teacher was very skeptical and didnt really believe him so we went on with class as usual. Then our principal came on the loudspeaker and told us all what had happened. A lot of the kids in my school had parents working down town so they all got really scared that something would happen to their parents. As the day went on and I went to my next class, the teacher was playing over and over again on her computer a video clip of the first plane hitting the towers. It all seemed so surreal. I was ashamed to admit it but i really had no clue what the twin towers were at the time. After that class, I had lunch release so as soon as we all got outside we got on our cell phones and called our parents and loved ones. I realize my story isnt as exciting or ironic as many others but I wanted to share it so people would remember that we were/are all affected by this tragedy in some way, shape, or form. I was receiving birthday wishes over the phone from a friend when the 2d plane struck. I could only sit and watch in awe and then in anger. I had $33.00 in my checking account so I wrote a check for $13.00 to the Red Cross and hoped it would make a difference. All the victims of this horrible act were innocent and were not prepared for what happened to them. Their families were not prepared and while we as a Nation will go on, the families of the fallen will never be the same.I was holding my daughter then 2 months old in my arms and saw how helpless and dependent upon me she was. I also thought how helpless this entire country felt because we were in a state of shock and fear. Tell us your story: On September 10th I got laid off and thought that it was the worse day little did I know what the next day was going to be like... The day started off nice with blue skies, I woke up early because I was used to waking up to go to work. I was still a bit upset about not having my job anymore and was planning to go back to where I worked to fill out some forms for unemploynment. So, I woke up made breakfast for me and my girlfriend and then walked her to the bus while we were walking a bus came and asked her if she wanted to rush to it she said no and we waited till the next one. So then my girlfriend gets on the bus I kiss her goodbye and then I get really upset about getting laid off I didnt cry but had no clue where to start looking since the economy was so rotten even before 9/11. So I go back to bed and watch some tv and flip the channels and then I left it on channel 4 for some reason I think to check the weather because i was also thinking about maybe playing some basketball. They were interviewing someone I forgot who but then they said they have a remarkable picture of the WTC the go on to it and I am like "Holy Crap" how are they going to rescue people there and then how are they going to fix it. So then I watch it and my father calls and tells me about. I call my girlfriend because she works liek 5-10 blocks away from it. She isnt there I leave a voice mail telling her to call me. Then after I hang up the second plane hits but at the time channel four had a different camera angle so you didnt really see the plane so i thought it was a bomb. Then the anchor says it wasnt a bomb it was another plane and they show it I am like holy shit now what so i call back my gf immediately and to tell her to call me the second she can and that we are under attack or something in the city. Still never heard from her after watching the attacks.. Then since i am by the airport there are no more sounds of regular passenger planes but sounds of military jets going by in the distance. I go to make a call with my regular phone and there is no dial tone. so then i go to my cell phone and the network is down so i had no way of calling out. My phone rings and its my father so i was able to get calls in just not out i guess because i live by the airport. I tell my father to put my sister on and o me a favor and call my gf's mom to see if maybe she heard from her. She picked up and is crying hystericaly so at first i thought maybe something happened but she just didnt hear from her yet. She asked me if she knows where Raquel is and I said i didnt know and i havent heard from her yet. I then start watching it again and I notice that the towers looked like they were swaying or leaning towards the opposite ways they were going and then then it fell and i went nuts thinking my god. I then try again to use the phone and there is a dial tone so I call Raquel again still no answer i figured she wouldnt be there but you never know. I then call my grandmother to see how she is doing and if she knows whats going on. Then as I am speak to her the other tower fell. She says she lost her tv because she didnt have cable she had regular tv. So I told her and she couldnt believe it. I then hang up thinking that maybe Raquel would call. She didnt but her mom did even more upset. So then after speaking to Raquel's upset mom I hang up the phone and all of a sudden I hear this huge roar I was like there no way something going to happen here. I look out the window and its like a spy plane from the Government witht he radar on top of it. After seeing that I put on my clothes and drive to Brooklyn to Raquel's moms house. I go on the belt parkway and its fine until i get to cross bay blvd where the traffic isnt moving. They closed the highway after pennsylvania avenue for Emergency vehicles only. So I am suck in traffic with ambulances and fire engines pasing by in the left lane. Then a school bus filled with the military in it goes by and I them load their guns and lock them into position I am like great. So I go to use my phone and its still bad and I close the flip to and curse and some people in the car next to me tell me that its not the day to be bad and gave me their phone to use.. I call my parents' house tell them about traffic. While in my car I was listening to Howard Stern and he was talking about how the Palestinians were dancing in the street..That got me really pissed that they would celebrate people dying.. Anywyay so I finally get to Raquel's mom and she is all happy and asks if i want a sandwich.. Raquel called her mom and told her that she was okay but noone called me while I was on the way there for 4 and half hours and while in traffic I kept invisioning the worst to my Raquel and her sister and got worried but then thought about and knew that everything would be okay with her..So then her mom calls her sister's phone and I speak to Raquel and it was the best feeling in the world to hear her again so I went to pick her up at the train station on Avenue X. Then after going back to her parents house I went to my parents hosue in Sheepshead Bay. On the way there I notice a while bunch of papers in the air, at first i thought they were seaguls flying high but then i saw them fall down. After I parked my car I followed a big piece of paper, picked it up and it had blood al over the back of it, i put it down, but then i found more and took one home and i have saved it. Since i live by the airport I didnt want to go back yet so I slept by Raquel's parents house and went back the next day.. After feeling miserable the day before about me getting laid off. I didnt even remember the fact that i got laid off I also felt that no matter what no job is more important than life itself... My 2 year old wanted to watch his morning video while he munched his breakfast so I turned on the TV. I saw the image of the towers on the screen and it took a minute to register that was the World Trade Center and it was on fire. I thought at first the Today Show was doing a movie preview and then I saw the words "live coverage" on the bottom of the screen. I stood there in disbelief and heard the report and saw the footage of the second tower being hit I sank down on the couch where I remained for most of the rest of the day. I called family and friends anyone I could think of not just to make them aware of it but because I needed someone to share my horror and fear with. I could barely do the normal daily things my son needed from me. Here he was so young and unaware dancing around I wished for his innocence so I to could escape realizing the the truth in what I had just witnessed. I worried for his future and that of my unborn child due in April. What kind of world was he coming into. I did not know if we would be plunged into war if more attacks would come and I felt helpless to protect my children and their future. As I watched the coverage I clung to the hope that rescues would come. But hour after hour passed and no one was being found. It was an awesome realization that hit home so hard there would not be any more survivors. As the day progressed I dealt with thoughts beyond the immediate tradgedy. We had been attacked, an act of war, on American soil, it was unbelieveable. I live not far from a small airport I was terror stricken because planes fly to the Twin Cities from our little airport. Any city with big buildings could be a target I did not relax until I heard all the planes had been grounded and all were down and accounted for. Like I had never before I suddenly felt vulnerable to the conflicts and ideals of those outside our borders. I, like most Americans of my generation had always watched these things unfold on the news somewhere else in some other country, not here, not on American soil. I felt helpless and scared I wanted to do something to help. But how do you help people across the country. A single Mom I had no money to spare to send to the funds. I was expecting my second child so I could not give blood. I went out the next day to the grocery store because I had to, life was going on inspite of the tradgedy but it felt so wrong. There were all those people dead all those people who lost their loved ones. I was in the store and I saw a stand of flags I grabbed one, finally I felt like there was something I could do I could display the flag show my solidarity with the rest of America. I wept as I paid for it carried it home and hung it on my porch. I grew up in a generation without fear. We had no conflicts like this, the Gulf War occured when I was in high school but the might of our armed forces made short work of that. I grew up with the security of living in the Greatest Nation on earth. And here we were sent to our knees by an extremist act on our own soil. But every where I went in the days that followed September 11, I saw the displays of the American flag and I had hope. I do live in the Greatest Nation on earth and the people of this country cannot be intimmidated, won't be held down by radical extremists, or by any person, or nation that would threaten us. I bought a shirt with the American flag and the words UNITED WE STAND, it seem like such an insignificant thing to wear it as my contribution when others helped by giving their lives, by working the recovery and rescue effort, by giving blood, or their money. But it is not a small gesture, displaying the flag is standing with America in her time of need, it is a show of unity, of pride, of commitment, and conviction to the ideals of this country. And in that I knew I was doing my part as an American. I am proud to belong to this nation, GOD BLESS AMERICA. I remember hearing people gather outside the office, in which I was meeting with a client, in the hall talking quiety about something and wondering what had happened. When the session was over I went out and asked what was going on and someone pointed to a television that a coworker had run home to get. On it was a scene I never thought to see in reality, only in the movies. A plane was crashing into the World Trade Tower and people were saying "no, not, again, not another one." I had to leave and begin another session. I had to put aside what I had seen and work with the person who had come to me for help. I remember thinking what is going on? What had happened? At the end of that session I went back to the television to see the second tower come down. I didn't realize that I was seeing the second tower, I thought that it was a replay of the first one. When I realized what I was seeing I was horrified and kept thinking, "all those people, all those people who were still in there and the people helping." I stood there with tears running down my face with about five or six other people watching this happen. I don't even remember what they were saying on the television. I do know that we didn't speak, we couldn't, what could we say to each other about what we had seen. I had to meet with another client then. I spent the remainder of my work day going between clients and the television trying to make sense of what had happened and of all the statements that were being said by the news people, the pentagon was blown up, the white house was gone. At some point in that morning we heard that a coworker had a daughter that worked in one of the towers and that he was frantic to hear from her. I remember thinking what more? If I go back and look at that television what are they going to tell me next? My next thoughts were of my children and my life partner. I wanted to be with them to tell him that I loved him and that I loved my children. And I wondered how I could explain this to my son, he's only 10. How do I explain anger so far removed from him but yet strikes out at him for things he doesn't even know about or understand. The older children are horrified and stay glued to the television until we force them to go to bed. They plead with us to stay home the next day so they can watch CNN and we say no and send them to school. One month later October 11...All through the news they are talking about the anniversary of the terrorist attacks. It is my son's 11th birthday and I want to turn off the television and the radio and let him have his day..let him be 11 and not know about this kind of anger and hatred. I have tried my best to help him to understand but he has never experienced this first hand and can't understand how people can hurt each other this way. His questions asking me about God and how their religion leads them to make these kinds of choices I can't answer but I try to help him. I can't answer his questions because I don't understand myself. I have to tell him I don't understand and try to explain to him about extremists but he still doesn't understand why people want and then feel good about hurting each other this way. He saw the news footage of the people celebrating this event. I feel angry because this has cheated him out of part of his childhood and stolen from him some of his innocence. I hope that the other children can get past their view of what has happened and the anger they have. They don't want to talk about it anymore and they don't want to watch it on television any more. September 11 one year later...we, as a nation, still don't have any resolution and my son and I still don't understand. He is older now and has discussed this many times with different people and has come to the conclusion that terrorists don't like other people and likened them to historical figures like Stalin and Hitler that he has only begun to learn about. I am still angry because he has had to learn about this from something that happened here and within his life and I wonder how this will have changed him and his outlook on life. The other children remark on the day as an anniversary and go on with their lives, they have homework to complete, a paper to write and a speech to prepare. Someone has to feed the dog and the cats and turn off the lights in the fish tanks. Life goes on, but at what cost to our children? Sunday night, September 9, 2001, at midnight, my sister was to report to the hospital to have her labor induced. The hospital was unwelcoming that late at night. The only souls who seemed to inhabit the building were emergency room patients with sour faces because the had been waiting so long. I quickly changed my position on the hospital's feelings when we entered the third floor baby ward. The nursing staff signed in my sister, Sarah, filled out the mile long paper work, asked her seemingly endless questions and finally gave her medication to soften her cervix and strengthen her contractions. I watched the clock's hands make their revolutions around the white circle in their taunting, slow manner. I asked myself over and over again, "Could this possibly be the longest night on Earth?" The next day was not much better. My sister had been awake all night and was now becoming grumpy. Just to pass time, her fiancee and I began to joke about the way she was acting. Nurses and doctors were in and out periodically. Every time they broght the same heart breaking news that it was not time yet. The day went by much the same as the previous night- uneventful and boring. My mom could tell my impatience was growing so we returned home to get some sleep. The next day we were to return to the hospital at six o'clock in the morning. The snooze button was worn down by our repetitive pushing (being as tired as we were). My sister called the house, I ran to answer it, frantic, yet hopeful. The news was a little different than we expected. She ordered, "Turn on the T.V!" We did as she said and were shocked to find a plane had hit the World Trade Center Tower One. We continued to stay glued to the television set like a deer caught in the headlight's of a car. The shock continued to rise as the reports were read. First, that the second tower was hit, then the Pentagon. With all of this going on we hurriedly dressed and went to the hospital. Upon our arrival we were updated with the news that she was dialated enough to have her water broken. This was the moment I had been waiting to arrive for the last nine months. My sister was about to be a mother. My mom was about be a grandmother. Most importantly, I was about to be someone's aunt! Six hours later, Sarah was complaining about the pressure. The nurse prepared to make a normal check. When she began, she said, "Sarah you can begin pushing." I was overcome with excitment! Fifteen minutes later I heard the screaming of a newly born life, the most wonderful sound I had ever heard. I cried at the look on my sister's face. Sevien, my nephew, was finally here. Arlington House, where I work, sits within Arlingon National Cemetery on a hill overlooking DC, the Potomac River, and the Pentagon. About 9:25 AM I stepped out of the Old Administration Building to walk over and open the house for visitors at 9:30 AM when Jan, the site gardener, came speeding up into the parking lot in the white Maintenance pickup truck. He jumped out and said in horror that two planes had hit the World Trade Center in New York City. My first inclination was that it must have been some sort of accident. A bit shaken but having no concept of the gravity of the situation, I continued over to the house where my friend and fellow ranger Linda and I opened the doors and set up the ribbons which direct traffic in the house. I took my assigned position on the second floor, standing at the head of the stairs. A few visitors came in immediately after we opened. A few minutes later, I heard and felt a loud ?Boom!? that seemed very close. Shortly thereafter Linda called upstairs and said, "Mark, I need you down here." I went downstairs and she asked what we should do about the Museum building, which the curatorial staff had not opened as usual that morning. Looking out the front doors of the house, I could see smoke billowing up through the trees. As I moved to get a better look Linda said, "They got the Pentagon." I stepped out in front of the house and saw a large black cloud going up against the blue sky. About that time, my supervisor, Frank, came over to the house and instructed us to close up the house. We escorted the few visitors out of the house and, along with Malcolm, the Facility Manager, and Jan, began a walk-through of the site. I went with Frank and we searched the house and the bathroom buildings (checking inside trashcans, under toilets, etc), looking for anything suspicious. Fortunately, we didn't find anything. I really don't know what we would have done had we found anything. At one point, I heard another ?Boom!? and thought that the Pentagon had been hit again. I would learn later that the sound was just the sonic boom of some of our fighter planes taking off (from Langley, I presume). Malcolm had a small radio in his pocket and was tuned to the news reports. While we were checking the buildings and the grounds we heard a radio report that an "unidentified aircraft" was in route to D.C. It was at that point that I began to wonder about our safety. I didn?t know what to expect and remember thinking ?Could the Cemetery be a target?? Fortunately, nothing came of the report immediately. I don't know whether the report turned out to be false information or whether that unidentified aircraft turned out to be the one that crashed in Pennsylvania or what. After we had checked the buildings and grounds, we went back to the office building and watched some news reports. I called my mom to tell her I was okay and she was very relieved. Several of us gathered around a small TV in Malcolm?s office. All of us were dealing with the situation in our own ways. Karen, the historian, was crying. Keena, one of our co-workers who was off that day called to make sure everyone was okay. Linda was probably the calmest of everyone. I was just shocked with the whole scene both in N.Y.C. and at the Pentagon. The whole thing was very nerve-racking. Being that close to D.C. and not knowing what was going to happen next, I didn't know whether we were in imminent danger or not. Fortunately for me, I missed the bus that morning, so I had driven in rather than taking the Metro. (The idea of taking Metro was a bit unsettling at a time when we weren't certain that the attacks on the public were over.) I called my friend Melissa, who works in Rosslyn but lives in D.C. and does not have a car to see if she wanted me to pick her up and take her out to my house in Chantilly. She was grateful for the offer. The traffic was pretty bad right outside of the city as everyone was leaving work and trying to get home. The road was jam packed with cars and there were men and women in uniform walking along the road, having left the Pentagon. It took me about 20 minutes to drive the 2-3 miles over to Rosslyn where I picked up Melissa and one of her co-workers, Lois. We dropped Lois off at her home and then headed for Chantilly. As we were nearing Vienna, we got in touch with another friend, Scott, who was on the Metro, and convinced him to meet us at the Vienna Metro station and come out to Chantilly rather than take the Metro through the Pentagon station towards his home in Alexandria. We picked Scott up and I looked around for anyone else I knew in case they needed a ride home. I offered a ride to two of the people whom I recognized from my bus. They were grateful for the offer as the buses weren't running at that time. We crammed five people into my car and went out to Chantilly. We spent most of the rest of the day just watching the news and the replays of the towers falling in New York. My mom made us some dinner. After most of the bridges into DC had been reopened for inbound traffic, Melissa and I went back to her apartment to collect some of her stuff so that she could stay out at my house. The city was very quiet. There were a lot of cops, and Military Policemen (part of the D.C. National Guard was called up) and the streets around the White House and Capitol were closed off. We tried to get a late edition Washington Post--stopping at probably a half a dozen places during the search-- but were unsuccessful. They were all sold out. On the way back home, we drove by the Pentagon. There was a thick smoky haze, illuminated by the emergency/construction lights which had been erected around the still-burning building. The burning smell was strong. I didn?t go to bed that night until about 1:30 AM as I was glued to the TV, waiting for whatever news came out. It would be a familiar pattern for the next few days. For weeks afterwards, I had some trouble handling my emotions. I felt terrible sadness, but also tremendous pride. Simply the sight of an American flag strung up along the highway or a patriotic song on the radio was enough to make me well up with tears. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001 my wife and I were flying from Detroit Michigan to Las Vegas Nevada for Vacation and to purchase property in Laughlin Nevada. We were near Albuquerque, New Mexico at approximately 33,000 feet when the pilot made the announcement that we were being deverted to the nearest airport by the airlines. A few minutes later the pilot came back with another statement. He said, "I assure you there is nothing wrong with the aircraft we have just been instructed to land at the nearest airport which will be Albuquerque. There will be more information when we land. I looked at my wife and said "There is probably a terrorist on board and they want to get the aircraft on the ground". When we landed and departed the aircraft we could hear the commotion in the terminal. The Pilot stopped us and explained that an aircraft had crashed into the World Trade Center. He could not give more information than he did in flight because of the possibility of a potential terrorist taking this as an opportunity to take another aircraft. The second aircraft crashed into the other tower shortly after we landed. We called our children to let them know that we were safe. They were very concerned and worried. It was a great relieve to know we were safe. We all stood around the TV's and watched in horror, the attacks on America. Two days later we rented a car a drove to Las Vegas with a newly wed couple from London, Ont. and a gentleman from Lima, Ohio.
