Well for the United States, everyone remembers what they were doing on september 11, 2001, not the death of a celebrity, but the death of thousounds of innocent americans. I live 20 miles away from DC and it hit our community extremly hard, many of my peers parents work at the Pentagon, and it was such a tragic day. I really didnt think anything of it when the news of the first tower was hit. But right around 11ish my principal comes on the intercom and announces that the pentago had been hit. As I walked down the halls, it was like a ghost town, it was pure silence and all you heard and saw was sadness and fear on all teenagers faces, whether balck, white, brown, purple, or blue. People dialing on their cell phones, frantic becasue they cant't get ahold of their paretns. My Dad is a colonel in the US army and works in Alexandria. I know my heart sunk when I heard about the Pentagon. I immeadiatly got to a phone and called my dads work... busy signal. So I call again...busey. i called home to see if my sister had heard any news. She hasn't been able to get ahole of him either. She picks me up from school early becaue alli wanted to do was be with my family. We went home and were glued to the TV, we watched in AWE as places we saw everyday and have been to, in complete destruction. It was hours until we heard from both my mom, who works at the hospital were the victims of the Pentagon were being shipped to, and my dad. BUt just to held in their arms nad to hear them say- "i love you" has never meant so much. Its days like this that makes me realize the things we take for granted. The way our country reacted was also something i will never forget. So many people wanted to help because so many people were hurt, violated, and touched. Our country came together to get through this horrifying day, and the marks it left in Americans hearts. Everyone came together as one, becasue we all felt the pain, and we all were going through the same feelings. To wake up the next day to flags, everywhere, people collecting food, clothes, colors of, red, white, and blue. September 11th. was only one day, but it will tkae a lifetime to forget. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Celebrating our first wedding anniversary, my husbank and I left for Italy the evening of September 10. Arriving in Venice, Italy early in the morning of September 11, we learned that my luggage was lost and thought that to be the worst thing that could happen to us. When we got to our hotel, our room was not ready yet, so we decided to walk around Venice. Finally, our room was ready and we had checked in (I still had no luggage). Because the New York Giants football team opened their season on the night of September 10 and my husband, being a big fan, had to miss the game, he turned on CNN to find out the score. That's when we saw that the WTC was on fire. We watched and heard it was a plane that hit one of the towers. We kept watching. We watched the second plane hit. The first thing I tried to do was call my sister, who works on Wall Street, to make sure she was all right and that she was at work and not anywhere near the towers. I was able to get through on the international phone lines. Someone who answered the phones didn't know if she was in the office or not. After that, I was not able to get through to the United States. My husband's brother is a NYC fireman, so naturally, we were worried about him also. A day later, we learned that ALL of our friends and family were safe, and most importantly alive. Italy became a blur for us and we couldn't wait to come home. My story is a good story compared to many people's story. My heart goes out to all the people who don't have good endings to their stories. You are all in my prayers. At the time the first plane hit a friend and myself were on a break from work watching Sky Sports, there was a breaking news flash on the screen so we changed channel to Sky News, and we were transfixed to the screen to see such things happen. We forced the rest of the public house to watch what was unfolding at the time, just then the second plane hit. We couldnt believe it. People who had come into the pub for lunch just stood there in shock. For the rest of the day we just watched the news. It was one of the devasting event since the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. During this attack I was in school in my English Class. The class just finish reading a book and immediately saw our teacher stepping outside to talk one of the teachers. After, she came back inside and turn on the T.V. I thought she was going to show us one of those boring movies but instead it was CNN. I saw a plane crash into a building and the teacher told us what happenend. I saw peaople running, screaming, shouting, and crying. It was one of the horrible things I ever seen and say may God bless those heroes, victims, and the United States. Tell us your story: it started like a normal day at work when a co-worker's husband called with the news. we have no tv's where i work so the only access was the internet and calls from home. i remember saying a little prayer at my desk hoping that eveyone was okay. over the next hours their were rumors that alot of bussiness were being evacuated. that caused a little stir because my employer was questioning letting us go. there were so many rumors going on it was hard to keep them straight. finally they let us go. about four of my co-workers and i walked to our cars. it was so silent. most of the time downtown is a pretty noisy place but not this day .everyone was trying to leave downtown in fear that somthing was going to happen here(hopkins airport is close by) cars were bumper to bumper. i remember it was a pretty hot day for sept. so once we got to the parking lot we sat outside and waited for trafic to let up.(looking back i feel so guilty just sitting outside, at that time i really havent seen or heard anything about the attacks)once i got in the car the radio station was on howard stern who is based in nyc. i wasnt even out of the parking lot when i bursed into tears. listening to the reaction on the radio gave me some confirmation that it really happened. driving home it was still bumper to bumber. i would look in the restaurants and see the sadest faces looking back at me. once i got home i woke up my boyfriend who was sleeping this whole time and i finally saw it for the first time on tv. i will never forget how sad i felt. even today i still have the same reaction everytime i see or read anything about this terrible tradgy. i realize that most of the stories on this website might be about first hand accounts of the attacts. i just wanted to let everyone know that as americans we were all affected and our stories is what our grandchildren will ask us"where were you on sept 11" and even though it is not the most memorable story , its a memory i will never forget. On September 11,2001 I got to work about 9:00am pacific time and put my stuff away, went to the cafeteria to get coffe. They had the news on tv..and I couldn't believe what I was watching.I was to painful to see and I wasn't sure whether is was true or not. I have two beutiful children whom I love dearly, they were the first that came to mind.I prayed ! I prayed to God for the protection to this Nation and for the people of America. I lift my believe to the only power on high. I gave thanks to God for the relatives of those that were in danger.For their hearts to be healed. I came back to my office and got a phone called from my boss,who said " Angelica, please close the store and go back home to your family,I don't want to risk your life,we are just 2 blocks away from LAX...and to me you are more important then my store" With that, I left and went back home... My parents had come down from Colorado to visit me, and I had a date that night that I was really looking forward to. On top of that, there was a Coronation Ceremony taking place at our school, which I decided against going. Instead, I stayed with my parents in the hotel room the night before, and slept in a bit before the start of my day. I still remember coming out of the shower, and my dad sitting on the edge of the couch, watching the television. I remember seeing a rising black cloud emanating from the World Trade Center. I remember asking if there was a fire, and it was then, live, that I saw the second plane fly into the side of the building and erupt into a gruesome fireball that tore into the establishment. I was dumbfounded. I simply stared that the screen in shock, not entirely aware as to what was going on. It was then the reporters began to fill me in, stating the destruction was an act of terrorists. I got my things ready, and said goodbye to my parents. Before they left, I remember them asking me if I was okay being in Abilene alone. Naturally, being a nineteen year old guy, I assured them somewhat sarcastically that I'd somehow find a way to manage without them. I got in my car, and waved as I drove to my school. By the time I got there, many people hadn't even heard what had happened yet. Many were just getting out of the Coronation Ceremony for our University's new president, and I took the time to explain to a number of people what was going on. With a group of people, I went to my dorm's lobby to watch any recent developments and unfoldings. It all seemed to be a bad dream. I watched live as the towers were attacked, and I watched live as they both crumpled underneath their weakened structuring. These huge massive buildings - one of the most recognizable landmarks of New York was gone in an instant. I remember feeling such rage, as I'm sure many did, and I remember wanting Bush to take immediate action. I spent the rest of the day consoling people who were not taking the attacks as well as I was, hearing all along about how the economy was about to recede, how war was imminent, and how gas prices were going to inflate to obscene amounts. It didn't quite turn out how I thought it was going to, thank God, but I can't remember ever being more uncertain about the future of our country and it's economy. Never had an event affected me like the destruction of the buildings, and I was two thousand miles away from ground zero. It's not something I'd be likely to forget anytime soon. Tell us your story: It started out like any other day, but when I was on my way to third period (9:20am), I heard a teacher in the hall telling another about a hijacking. It caught my attention, but I figured it was nothing that would effect "my world." For some reason I couldn't shake the thought, though. I mentioned it to my text teacher, but he seemed quite unaware and uninterested. At the end of that class (10:00am), the principle came over the PA to inform us of the crash at the World Trade Center. As my next class started filling in the room, I found a TV and turned it on. I nearly fell to the floor with shock and horror! Tears were uncontrolable! I watched as the buildings fell for the next 2 hours, and after that I watched as they replayed the prior falls over and over. I couldn't stop watching. I was glued to the television, the radio, anything I could find that would tell me what was going on. I didn't realize until that night that the tragedy was a lot closer than I thought. It turns out that my uncle had reservations at the World Trade Center Hotel, and that he was sitting on a place waiting to take off for New York when this all occured. My family was so fortunate that his plane never made it off the ground! Who knows what might have happened?! September 11th became a day of inspiration for me. Because of that tragic day, I have decided to set aside my dream of becoming an actress and join the U.S. Army when I graduate college. I hope to eventually go into the CIA, as well. I want to fight the terrorists, face-to-face (or as close as they'll let a female get)! My patriotism has become one of the strongest traits about me, and I want to use that to protect our freedom! We were part of a caravan of emergency vehicles dispatched to Manhatan. The wail of sirens surrounded us, we could see smoke billowing in the distance, the smell of smoke was everywhere. The day started as any other, I was working withj a student in my classroom, when an aid came in an told us the impossable-the Twin towers had been attacked. A quick phone call to fire headquaters, led to my being informed all hands were being asked to come in. the drive from suffolk to nassau was unatural. the roads were desrted except for one other volunteer also raceing to his headquaters. We were first sent to a park in Nassau, then sent to Shea Stadium. The mets were unreal opening their doors present, feeding all who responded. At one moment in time someone noticed I wasnt eating. I keep Kosher I explained-Oh was his reply. As we were pulling out to Manhatan there was a pounding on our door-as I opened it a hand poped in-its from dugies came a voice-its Kosher-this was a pattern of things to come. The horors of ground Zero have often been chronicled-but its the acts of kindness I like to remember. The first night about 2 in the morning after diging a path from THE PILE to the triage center when a priest aproached me. He was accompanied my a gentelman in a red cape and skullcap-he inquired how I was doing and if there was anything I needed. At the end he introduced me to his friend " son you do realize this is the cardinal-We took a picture together me in my KIPAH-the priest and the cardinal-I reflect on that moment often-how all New Yorkers pulled togethere on that horrific day. Most of my memories of ground zero comes in flashes, I seemed to have bolocked out the bodyparts, fires and ruble. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Let me start off on 9-2-01 first. That day was my b-day, and I was 21! I thought to my self it?s a new yr (b-day yr) and a lot of wonderful things are in store for me. I?m 21 one now, I?m invincible-but no one really is, and I would learn that 9 days later!!! On 9-11-01 I decided to call in sick that day, I was not feeling to well (well enough that I could of gone, but chose to stay home). That day my bf called in also to spend the day with me. When I got up I had no idea what was held in the upcoming hours or weeks. I can remember that morning like it was yesterday (and yet it?s nothing to compare to what all the other family have to live on a daily basis), I was laying on my couch and just turned on the TV to see what was on while I wait for my bf to get here. I came across on every channel it seam that some crises has happen, I could not gather what at the time. I just left the TV on channel 8 and sat in horror, it has just been minutes after the first plain hit. I sat up and held my hand over my mouth and thought OH MY GOD. At the time it still did not hit me on what has happen. I just sat still watching and wishing I could be there to help. Soon after my bf came in the door and I told him what has just happen. He told me he new, he heard over the radio when he was in his car. We did not do much that day, but watch TV. I remember I called my sister to see if she new what was going on, she said she was watching TV too. My sister was 7 ? months along with her boys (triplets). Now I don?t know if it was what was happing in the world or if it was just time, but only 17 days later she would give birth to those beautiful baby boys (they may be the joy of her life, but they are the joy of mine too). When I think of them I see a new generation of leaders, and at that time all I wanted was a safe world to help bring them up in. Days after 9-11-01 and all of the talk on the radio, and all of the families that called in to tell there close encounters in NY, that was when I broke down and cried. Now my brother was in the Navy a few yrs back and I wanted to get it thought on what has happen. He was one pissed off American I can say. He was ready to jump in and kill-eye for an eye I guess you would say. My brother takes great pride in his country, and to heart when it is in need. I freaked at the thought of losing my brother (I thought I can barely stand to the feeling of other families losses, yet one of my own). I?m happy that he did not go; yet it is a selfish feeling for every person that died that day was selfless. 9-11-01 has come and gone now and it?s already 9-11-02 and all I could do again was stay glued to the TV and just cry. On my way to work at 7:46 when there was 2 minuets of salient, I had to pull my car over and just cry like I have not cried before.. It has been a yr today and in 17 more days my nephews/godsons will be a yr, and there is not a day go by that I do not think of them and every min I have to spare I spend it with them kissing and hugging them and always telling them that I love them. I may have not lost a friend/family member to 9-11-01 but we all have lost a lot, but in the same respect we have more to gain in the days to come! It was 10p.m. and the English language news was on, which I watched dutifully every night. I was in my little kitchen cooking my dinner and half-heartedly listening to the news when the broadcasters voices became chaotic. I looked at the tv and noticed two towers that I recognized, but couldn't place. I stepped into my living area to get a closer look and to see if there were any words written. I will never forget, in the upper right hand corner were the words "New York" written in katakana. I started to get scared. I turned my dinner off, called an American friend to see if she knew anything more and she didn't. As I was watching, I saw the second plane hit and I freaked out. Here I was thousands of miles away and there was no way for me to get home or communicate. And one of my dear friends was working as a temp in and around Manhatten. I wanted my mom. I was 25 years old and I could only think that I wanted my mom. I wanted to be back in MN with my mom. I called my friend (in Japan) back, she was from the east coast and we started speculating what was happening. She worked for a different company than I did, so we agreed to call each other back with any further information. I called my friends who lived near me and told them to turn on their tvs. Pretty soon my friends started to trickle into my apartment. As a member of the expatriot community, when one of us hurt, we all hurt. My friends from the UK and NZ and Australia came to sit with me and comfort me. I was in shock. I wanted to go home, to the US. I wanted to be in the US experiencing this with my fellow Americans and here I was living my dream, to teach in Japan, and America had come under attack. The national network, NHK, continued to broadcast in English until 1am. At that point they switched to broadcasting in Japanese. Now my listening skills were good, but not good enough to follow what the broadcasters were saying. My friends, Sophie and Simon, who lived downtown Kyoto called and told me to take a cab to their house as they had the BBC online and were listening/watching the news that way. I agreed, as my friends had all gone home to go to bed so they could get up for work the next day. I was stressed out because I couldn't get ahold of my friend Elizabeth in New York. I took a cab to their house. Around 4.30am , my time I was able to get through to Elizabeth in Brooklyn. She was alive. I was relieved. We talked for a few minutes and then got off the phone. We watched the BBC broadcast until 6.30am when I fell asleep. I went to work that day, September 12 and felt so disconnected. That evening, I had a lesson with a woman who had lived through the bombing of Hiroshima. She was 4 years old and could remember what her country experienced at the hands of the Americans. In a way it seemed she was happy we had been attacked. We had a very heated and at times angry discussion that ended with both of us crying and apologizing for things both our countries had done. What I learned is that we are all human and capable of feeling extreme patriotism when our homeland comes under attack. Yet hatred and animosity does not solve anything and trying to listen to each other and understand where we are all coming from, with our unique perspectives is something to strive towards. We all just got done telling her happy birthday and our teacher was trying to get us to sing (but we didn't). The teacher across the hall came running over yelling "Diana! Diana! turn on the TV! Hurry up! Turn it on!" She kind of freaked us out, but we got the TV on and not even a minute later we were a witness to the second crash. We were confused about what was going on until we seen that. At first I thought it was some kind of a hoax, when I arrived at the doctors office the television was on and had pictures of what was happening. I do believe everyone in that room went in to shock and a feeling that can't be put into words still. I returned home and watched for days as the rescue efforts continued. I could not sleep, so I'd watch the news hoping and praying there would be people found alive. As the days and weeks went on it was clear there would be no one found alive. A deep, deep saddness had fallen on me and my country. How could this have happened? What kind of people could do such a horrible thing to innocent Americans? Only the devil himself could have caused this and yet they say it was done by followers of some kind of religion. "Oh my God", how can this be? I'm still asking this question on August 20, 2002. I still have difficulty realizing that this really happened. I've been so depressed and felt so scared at times and yet feeling so proud to be an American! As 9/11-2002 is approaching I'm reliving the moments of that horrible day and the days that came and went. I know I'm still grieving as the nation is, yes it's true life does go on but I now know without any reservation it will never be like it was on September 10, 2001. I cry for all those families that lost their loved ones and pray that God is giving them strength to go on. I'm praying for my President George Bush, all the leaders of this great country and the troops that are fighting the war on terrorism. We must stay united as we were in the days after the attack. I've never seen so many flags flying, it was like a sea of red, white and blue, oh how beautiful! But why did it take such a horrible attack to bring us back to what this country was built on. I was half asleep still when I went to check the morning news on Seattle's KOMOTV.COM web page like I did every morning. I saw the heading "plane hits World Trade Center" and a picture of a plane crashing into a fiery building. I just stared uncomprehending at the words and image-thinking for a brief second that this was a prank by computer hackers. I honestly sat and stared at the screen for at least a minute with my mind blank-not "getting it". I ran into the bedroom and turned on the TV. The news coverage was confused and chaotic. Nobody knew what had just happened. I called my best girlfriend and said "are you seeing this?" She and I watched together as the second plane crashed into the other tower. We stayed on the phone together most of the day in between calling other loved ones. We, on the west coast, were afraid that we were the next targets while we mourned what had happend in the east. I kept wanting to look at the sky for renegade airplanes. I knew that things would never be the same in the western world. The television was kept on all day and all night. My Uncle is a Locksmith, for the Pentagon.As my morning progressed I started doing my daily chores and with the radio & tv on I began to clean... I had DC101 on the radio and heard of a plane crash. At first, I couldn't fanthom the idea, they are alway's joking on the radio. I thought I better look at the tv.. I saw the replay of the first plane hitting the tower #1. I called my mother, who was at work, I began to tell her about it. As I spoke to her another plane hit tower #2, then another plain hit the pentagon. As I began to tell her of the news, she said ,"Oh, my God, Uncle John is at work" (the Pentagon), "call Aunt Murph (his wife)." I hung up and dialed Aunt Murph, her line was busy. Redialing several times, I finally got through and she was distraught over the fact that she could not reach anyone at the Pentagon. I wanted to go to her, she was alone and I thought she might go to look for him. I told her I'd be there in a flash. She said,"No, I'll be alright, I'll call you back." Pacing the floor, tears strolling down my face, in the horror of what just accurred and the fate of my Uncle, I called my Aunt again. Still no word from my Uncle John. Just about 3 hours passed and finally my phone rang, It was my Aunt Murph. She said, " I just spoke to John and he is alright, he had no way of contact till now, all the phones were busy, I just got to a pay phone in which there is a long line., He went on to say, that he'd try to get a ride home somehow, not knowing when he'd arrive. He arrived home around 7 p.m. that evening. My family and I were so grateful to have him home,and gracing us with his presence. I pray; God keep us safe and from harms way. I will be reliving moments of shock and terror for weeks to come, and wanted to write down, to share my recollections to help come to grips with what happened, and to bear what witness I could to the atrocity. I have not yet had time to check the times as I've recollected them, but the events are as accurate as I remember. My heart goes out to all the victims and their families. 8:45 - Normal morning - I have a 9:00 meeting scheduled with the CFO of a small software firm. He's called the meeting, but as he is visiting from the West Coast, we have agreed the meeting will be at 60 Wall downtown, our company's "new" headquarters, that have recently been sold to a competitor. I've finished my morning coffee and breakfast, having gotten in early. I hear a slight rumble, and think construction must be going on in the building somewhere, in preparation for the new tenants. No one comments on the rumble. It is not construction, but the first strike into the northern tower of the WTC. 8:50 - A co-worker walking to his desk states there must be a fire somewhere. Glancing outside for the first time since the noise, I see thousands and thousands of letter size pieces of paper, making it look like a ticker tape parade. Everyone then slowly disengages from work to look for the source of the fire. We are on the 21st floor, so from our angle, it appears the fire and papers are coming from 140 Broadway - the former headquarters of DLJ, then Marine Midland, now HSBC. The building appears undamaged. Several co-workers decide to go up to the 40th floor for a better view. 8:55 - A secretary tells us a plane hit one of the WTC towers. A small one, I assume, some small cessna. No, she tells me, a 737 jumbojet. Total disbelief. I call the trading desk for verification. Yes, I am told, a passenger jet has hit the WTC. I realize my brother works in the WTC. I call my sister-in-law to find out what floor, what building he is in. I am told he's on the 45th floor, 1 WTC, the one with the communications antenna. I tell her to remain calm, to call me with any news. 9:00 - I take the elevator to the ground floor, to let the security guard know I have a 9:00 meeting, to let the visitor up to the 21st floor. At this point, another explosion, sounding closer, some shouts from people outside the building. I leave 60 Wall by the back entrance on Pine Street, which runs parallel to Wall St. Heading up Pine towards Broadway, I pass scores of people, some walking, some running, some crying. Papers are beginning to accumulate on the streets and sidewalks. The sounds of sirens are growing, coming from everywhere. Getting to the corner of Pine and Broadway, I can see fires in both buildings, and overhear the bystanders talking about the sight of the second plane hitting. 9:10 - Back up to the 21st floor of 60 Wall, after brushing off some soot and ash from my shirt. I call up my sister in law to tell her that Gip should be fine, the hit was very high up on # 1 WTC, he should be able to get out of the building. Still no word from him. A janitor walks through the floor, telling everyone to leave immediately, walk down to the ground floor. The stairways are pretty much empty, as the building is only about 15% filled. 9:15 - Getting to the 3rd floor, I stop descending to visit the trading floor, to make a call to see if there's any news. None. My sister and parents are both in her apartment, tell me I have a place to stay if needed. I then get down to the basement, run into a co-worker, and tell him I'm going to leave to look for my brother. He argues that it is a total waste of time, I won't find him, that I'm safer where I am. I agree, but tell him I'm going back up to the trading floor to make another call. 9:25 - Getting to the ground floor, I decide to make a detour to go to a local chapel, Our Lady of Victory, to say a prayer. I run into Mary, a cousin of my father's. She is weeping, very shaken. She works on lower Broadway, and did not make it to work because of a doctor's appointment. She knows Gip works at 1 WTC, and we decide that help will be needed to where the evacuees are being shepherded. 9:40 - We walk towards Broadway to ask rescue workers where the site is. Seaport, we're told, walk north on Broadway to Fulton, then down Fulton. We are told the Pentagon was hit, and Pittsburgh was hit. We can't make sense out of Pittsburgh... how big is this? We start walking north. People are still watching the burning, mesmerized. Some scream at the sight of people jumping from the towers. 9:45 - Two blocks away, at Maiden Lane, we are told to walk away from Broadway, to walk down Maiden Lane eastbound to the Seaport. We get halfway down to the next intersection, and I spy a building that provides a shortcut to John Street. John Street runs parallel to Maiden Lane, and the building has entrances on both streets, with glass doors on both sides. I tell Mary we can cut through. The building is small, probably built before World War I. I estimate it has 10 to 20 small businesses as tenants. Mary starts to open the door, and an enormous loud rumbling, a cacophony of screams is heard behind us. The ground is shaking. I turn to look back, and see a cloud of smoke rushing toward us, with people sprinting down the street, absolute fear on their faces. We yell at some passing to get into the building, then run in ourselves. We walk, dazed, towards the other exit, look back through the glass doors at a screaming crowd sprinting past the entrance, then see a black cloud overcome them, block out all light and shut off all noise from the street. Like a soundproof curtain swept across the doors. The glass wall of doors looks like they are now painted charcoal grey on the outside. We look north, still a normal scene with cars, but no people. I scream to Mary to leave by this exit, take three steps, and the same black cloud envelopes and seals off that exit. There are seven people in the lobby. A door opens, and the super is screaming at everyone to get downstairs. We head down into the basement of the building, which is a collection of storerooms, a washroom with basin and toilet, furnaces, boilers, pipes, cables, and boxes, all running north south. Someone has a boombox, tells us the tower fell. We dampen paper towels, hold them over our mouths to protect us from the smoke which is beginning to filter down. We wonder if we will ever get out, or if we are buried under rubble. 9:55 - I go back up to the lobby, as the door is open. People are in a bank branch that is adjacent to the building, with a glass door entrance to the building lobby. The door is locked, and the people are trying to break it down, as they are being overcome by smoke. The super yells for them to back away, then uses a metal stool to smash the door. My adrenaline is now so high that I jump at the sound, thinking illogically that this small building is now under attack. I return to the basement, to get away from the smoke that is now coming from the bank branch. A new batch of 10 people enter the basement, asking for water. They are covered in ash, looking like moving statues, with red eyes, coughing, some with clothes that have rips in them. 10:00 - A woman in uniform tells us there is more space in the floor below us with cleaner air. Mary and I head down the stairs, end up in another corridor with rooms off to the side. The corridor is lined with filing cabinets, with records in them from the early '90s. We assess the area. There is a paint closet, big sign against smoking. A supply closet full of fluorescent lights. A machine shop, with scrap metal, power tools, a lathe, and plumbing supplies. Mary and I are the only ones in this area. We don't know what has become of the others. On top of the filing cabinets, we find a plastic statue of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, with a red cloak and golden crown, lying on its side. I set it right side up, say a quiet prayer for help. Others come in the room looking for masks against the smoke, which seems to be getting worse. I go back to the paint closet to look for masks. No luck. We look for phones - again, no luck. 10:25 - I look past the stairway in the other direction, find a door, hear voices on the other side. Opening it is a wonderful sight. Four men, clean, in a small air-conditioned room watching TV. I yell to Mary to join us. We find Poland Spring water on the ground in bottles. A phone is there, some success, some failure in getting through. I have no luck. The TV turns out to be closed circuit, with cameras in both the lobby and the street. Mary and I grab bottles of water, drink it down. The air conditioner makes the room comfortably cool at 72 degrees. We watch the camera for clues as to what has happened. 10:35 - We see people now leaving the building, and can see them walking normally. Mary and I agree it's time to get out. I grab what water I can carry - eight loose bottles. We come up to the ground floor, see the street, see shapes of cars. We walk out into a scene of an eerie quiet, with 2 inches of ash covering everything. Smoke and ash are still in the air, but with our wet towels we can, at least, breathe. We start to head east to the river, trying to get away from the source of smoke. I glance back to see, through a fog of smoke, a giant section of the skin of the WTC leaning up against a building on Broadway that housed The World of Golf retail store. It reaches up to the bottom of the third floor. The streets are totally deserted at first, although we can hear some indistinct yelling. There is no sign of the scores of people who were trying to outrun the wall of smoke, although we see numerous shoes, backpacks, briefcases lying in the street. As we walk down Maiden Lane, we pass the Federal Reserve Building. We instinctively do not look around on the ground, do not try to assimilate too much information - we only focus on walking toward what looks like clear sky. Some people pass us by, covered head to toe in ash. I give them water. I give water to the policemen on each corner until I'm out. We have no cell service, and wonder what else in America has been hit. 10:45 - We are now in front of Pace University Hospital, where the air is clearer. Hospital staff are out front, handing out masks. We each get masks on, with plasticine shields for our eyes. We head west, towards City Hall, under direction from police. We get over the concrete barricade on the approach to the Brooklyn Bridge. Police tell us to journey across the bridge to Brooklyn. We both agree that we need to get north to midtown. Right there, in front of City Hall, another horrendously loud rumble builds, screams, crowd breaking into a run. I look back at the wall of smoke as the second building collapses and realize it is now getting bigger and coming towards us, like some evil monster from a childhood dream you can't escape. I grab Mary's purse and bag, and we both start to sprint north up Park Row. What had been an orderly flow now becomes a flight of fear, although within two blocks we realize the smoke won't reach us. Mary keeps urging me to leave her, to run to safety. I need her as much as she needs me, however. At this point, we stop to catch our breath, but I want to continue walking, as we are now in Federal Plaza, next to the US Court of International Trade, US Courthouse, and the Federal Building. We continue our trek north. Still no cell service at all. We instinctively duck every time we hear what are fighter jets above us. 12:00 - We reach Grand Central, are told trains are working on a limited schedule. 12:10 - We reach 270 Park Ave, midtown HQ for my company. We go upstairs, I find out from my sister that my brother is alive, he got out before the second plane even hit. I say a silent prayer of thanks, and pass the news on to Mary. 1:00 - I get on a jammed Metro North train, hear tales, stories, rumors from fellow travelers. 2:15 - Arrival at my station, and I walk home. Rest of the day is spent watching the endless re-runs, hearing of the Pentagon, getting word on others. My wife and I find out that a good friend of ours, a member of our wedding, was on the 85th floor of #2 when the second plane hit. No word yet for him. A sleepless night, up at 6:00 AM. Wednesday - a day of prayer, of some hope, an overwhelming sense of loss, anger, and grief. My brother Tim, who drove down from Boston on the news, insists we play golf, which provides a welcome respite from all the horrific news. We play with his brother-in-law at a nearby country club. The adrenaline burn from the previous day has given me an incredibly sore body, like I've run a marathon. Playing golf was almost as surreal as the previous day. Miles tells tales of his exodus, of the dark-skinned person who somehow got onto the floor of the NYSE with a knapsack. A floor trader coldcocked him, and Security took him away. The event started a mini-panic. Later on Wednesday, Missie and I attend an interfaith service at the local synagogue, which is where I finally let go. I spend the hour weeping, crying, sobbing for the thousands and thousands of innocents who were simply going to work. Totally unable to comprehend the horrific event, yet I know it's real. Thursday - Return to work, Spent the morning writing this e-mail. Noon, we are being evacuated because of a bomb scare. We leave, then return, now rumors are flying faster and faster. I think I will leave for home, don't know when I'll be back. My prayers to all.
