The sun was shining high and it was a beautiful morning. Then as usual I decided to turn on the TV, then suddenly and interuption comes showing the first airplane crash then the second. My family was asleep so I woke them up. I was bursting in tears and couldnt explain. I was devistated. I was alone downstairs in my living room sitting and watching TV and then suddenly the world id broken itno peices. My mom and I woke up my brother, sister and my dad, and even by that time no one in my family has seen the towers collapse. My brother not knowing of what happend told me, "why are you crying speak up baby, c'mon." I just stud there and turned on the TV. My whole family together hugged eachother and prayed for those who had lost their lives and had suffered in this horrible tragedy. Today people know that speking of this subject breaks me down and i cant imagine for the family and friends who passed away. Another thing that was extreamly scary was that my family and I went to New York only 5 days before 9/11. We passed the Twin Towers many times. Then my dad suggested, "why dont we climb the Towers again?" My brother, sister, and I just replied in a tiredsome voice," We've already went up to the top about 2 years ago, and anway it's not like there going to leave us please what could happen?" My dad nodded and on September 11th i was astonished and ashamed of what we said,"they're not going to leave us.." But sadly they did. This taught me that it doesnt matter if you done it twice or three times just do something three times so you'll never take things for granted. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Poems Where Were You? Walking out of the bathroom, that?s what I was doing when I heard. I was walking out of the bathroom, shaking the droplets of water off my hands, when I saw the TV on in the conference room, when someone told me about the planes. My sister-in-law was in a class at Bible College. They stopped and prayed. Someone I work with was about to go in for a job interview. She sat watching TV with the secretary. My husband was also trying to watch the TV on the secretary?s desk, though the screen was only an inch wide. It was difficult to see what was happening. My friend was working at a nursery school. Parents started arriving, crying, whisking their children home. My mom was in the church office. All she heard was "they bombed the Pentagon." A woman came in off the street, hysterical. My dad was in the car listening to the radio. He was tuned into this jazz station that had a morning talk show. They were looking for callers. The last normal thing he heard them say was, "Now how many of you have a relative that dresses like a pimp?" Call in and tell us. But they didn?t, because then there was this rustling of papers, and he said there was something happening in New York. My dad changed the channel. ? Like Wildfire I think of the ripple, or the tidal wave. From East to West ? office workers to carpoolers to kitchen dwellers to those under the covers. Someone tells someone who tells someone who tells someone. A thousand simultaneous gasps, followed by a thousand others. Hands go to mouths and to remote controls. The whispers: "Did you hear?" "What happened?" and varying versions of the same story echo, and overlap. Never before: so many fingers dialing, or dancing across the keys, trying to make the connection. A nation full of eyes entranced by the screen ? and uneaten dinners, and tears in pillows. 3/7/02 ? The Day After (September 12) At work the TV kept playing outside of my cubicle and inside my head. I fought fear with the mundane. I clicked on the keys and stared ahead at the haze of white screen. If I dared close my eyes, I saw buildings falling, fire, and airplanes ? in slow-motion; instant replay. That day there were no planes in the blue skies; no everyday worries about traffic or bills ? just my heartbeat and cold hands. Around noon Jenn gave me pink roses. At first they took me by surprise. They left me almost breathless. I got lost in the folds of intricately carved petals, blinded by the beauty and sweetness. In that delicious drowning time I prayed for time before life opened my eyes, and jolted me awake. 9/21/01 ? First Laugh We stood in the hospital lobby with lights and cords and microphones. Mark Tolosky, the CEO, stared right into the camera. An American flag pin was fastened to his suit. I can do this, I thought, breathing deeply. Glancing out the window, I could see the flag, at half-mast, shifting in the breeze. The camera rolled and soon my forehead grew sticky from the lights. Someone passing by said, "They just found firefighters alive in the rubble!" Please God, I choked, then swallowed it. We had to finish. Tolosky hadn?t heard. Instead, he cracked a joke. I don?t remember it anymore. I just remember laughing. These unused muscles squeaked into a smile. My stomach tickled and eyes watered. The laughter shook my insides and spread this warmth within me that lingered with the afternoon shadows. 11/20/01 ? Saturday (September 15) It was time to mobilize. On 96.5 TIC-FM, in-between "God Bless America" and the "Star Spangled Banner," people were calling in and urging us to stop at Big Y or the parking lot of Kay?s Beauty Salon. Drop off your bottled water and your blankets, your flashlights and your food. We?ll do everything we can to get it there. I donned my yellow gloves and began scrubbing mildew from the bathroom walls, furiously scraping in tune to the music, making the faucets gleam back my red face. Later, on my way to Wal-Mart, I saw firefighters collecting dollars in their boots. There was nothing we could do. So we followed a slapped together script patched with bits of World War II films and recollections from our grandparents. I could almost hear the narrator. At a red light this melancholy song from the summer came on the radio. The song spilled out from my open windows and through other open windows. This, I calculated, would be the emotional scene. Drifting outside myself, gazing down at the tableau, I wondered how long this would go on ? this detachment, this thin line of separation, like an egg shell. ? Lunchtime A week later we were sitting outside, the sun beating on our backs, eating tuna fish and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Above us the sky was a brilliant blue; one of those almost autumn skies free of summer haze. There were no clouds. In an instant the roar of a plane interrupted our sentences. I was at home that morning of September 11th (which also happens to be my husband and mines anniversary)getting ready to start school with my daughter, when my husband called shortly after 8:30 to tell me to turn the TV on. "America's being attacked" he said. I ran to turn the TV on, and watched with millions of other people in total disbelief. I cried for hours and days.It's still hard to believe one year later. It's a day I think about often and will never forget. Being "our anniversary", I hope someday we'll be able to "celebrate" without feeling guilty. I had not seen him in a couple of years, so it was a party atmosphere, drank too much beer! The next morning, around 6:30 AM, he was pounding on the door, yelling "Get up and take a piss, Rick! The world's on fire!" I thought he was just torturing me, to see if I would get up, I sure didn't feel like it. But he kept insisting, said the World Trade Center was gone, collapsed. "Both buildings?" "Ya, two planes crashed into them". That's when I thought aboput how many casualties there could be. I was in a dark mood for weeks after. Also, my #1 grandson's first birthday was September 12th, 2001. Tell us your story: I homeschool my 2 girls and had just sent them downstairs to the schoolroom to get started and was going to check my messages really quickly and close out my computer. On the voicemail was a meaasge from my husband saying, "Turn on the t.v.....It probably won't affect me, but it will be a long day for some people here.". The World Trade Center had just been hit and he saw it on the news. I turned on the news just before they reported about the Pentagon being hit - the Pentagon --- where my husband works. It didn't seem real. It couldn't be real. They had just delivered our household goods 3 weeks before. We had finished our tour in Hawaii and moved here for the great job at the Pentagon. We hardly knew anyone yet. The news just showed it over and over again. It seemed like a movie - people with faces grey from ash and rubble running away from the WTC. All those military men and women walking away from the Pentagon. I desperately watched for my husband to appear on screen. I prayed "please God, not him." My Dad had passed away just 7 months prior, to the date. I kept looking at my Dad's picture - thinking "Dad would know where Drew is right now." I was certain that my father would somehow be able to calm me with words of special bunkers and safe places and even statistics. I screamed for him to send Drew back to me. I begged. I prayed. And I cried. An hour had passed and still no call from Drew. I keep looking out my front window expecting some awful military car to drive up and say "we regret to inform you". Little did I realize that all this wasn't going to work like those Friday night movies on t.v. Two hours passed. I have now put a video on for the kids. "Thank you God for not letting them realize what was going on." The news is reporting that another plane is headed for the DC area. The phone rings... it is my friend from Hawaii asking, "Is Drew okay?". I barely choke out that I don't know. More phone calls. I keep answering, praying each time that it is him. Each call is a friend checking on Drew. Three hours have passed, the girls are eating lunch now. They are still in a bubble of not knowing. I wonder how long it can last. "Please God, keep them innocent from this." I decide that I need to call my Mom and tell her that I haven't heard form Drew. She is on the west coast and had not seen the news. She is mourning her husband and now her youngest daughter may have also lost a husband. Four hours and thousands of tears have passed. The phone rings and I hear his voice. "Oh, thank you God!" He says that he has to go away and I don't understand. All I can say is "I love you so much." I finally understand enough to ask if he is going someplace safe - he says yes, and he will see me in a few days. It doesn't make any sense - we need him, but so does his job, so does the military and so does our country. So, this is what service and duty come down to. I walk downstairs and hug my girls. Tell us your story: As I have relocated to Canada after graduating at Gallaudet University 4 months earlier, I was just settling in a new apartment home only days before the tragedy hit. Less than 6 weeks to September 11, 2001, I left Washington, DC, I behind my many dear American friends whom I called my great big "family" of hearts. My last "home" was a VOA housing up on Columbia Pike, where I was doing some volunteering and helping other Washingtonians and Virginians getting about their day. That place is only two bus stops from the Pentagon Metro. Right on Columbia Pike, gosh, I remember it so well. Met wonderful people young and old, those folks need help and support of moral kindness. Wished I could do more, but my Mom in Canada has been very ill so I decided to head home, took Amtrak Superliner to my other favorite visitor's spot, Chicago, Illinois then switched trains to Northern Express to Grand Forks, North Dakota, Canada's southernmost neighbor and best friend to the South. Along wit! hme, I took home, a toy American eagle from Nature's company store at the Pentagon City store, I called him, "Rummy." Gosh, I am gonna miss the states so much and I cried on the train, looked out at the great sights of Harpers Ferry, Washington skyline, and Chicago's skyscrapers, the Sears Towers, man ... this is America the Beautiful, now arriving to the golden plains of America, to be home. Just moved in my apartment on 3rd, still got my things in storage in Arlington, Virginia only a mile or two from the grandest favorite "the Pentagon" and had made arrangements to have my belongings transferred from Washington, DC to Winnipeg, Manitoba CANADA, arrived much later towards October. That morning, for four years I always had that 24K gold necklace chain round my neck, is gone forever. That is September 11, 2001. I was sleeping on the cot with lots of pillows and blankets, a bit like Scandinavia style of sleeping. I woke up, swore at myself, to get up, get up, get up, get up ... was "disturbed like an angry eagle" awaken by the angry spirits. That was 0735 CDT (Central Time) So I got up on my feet, my tee shirt and pants still on, made coffee on. Turned on my computer, saw my friend from New Jersey being online, I guess he was doing emails -- but he was supposed to be going to one of his classes that morning. At 0743 CDT, I was puzzled, so okay I decided to send him an online greeting, "Good Morning" and he told me all of a sudden, to turn on CNN. And I said, "What a morning why I am so upset, waking up like this, now what's on CNN? Another major earthquake??" He swore it is not a Clancy movie anymore, that the World Trade Center was hit by a ! jumbo jet. With awe and horror in my eyes, I could not believe what I was seeing, I knew it I swore to myself that I finally figured it out why I woke up in such an upset state. Then I was watching Aaron Brown of CNN, in New York with the WTC scene behind him, I saw another plane actually going in for the South Tower which I knew my friend Nicky was a worker of Cantor-Fitzgerald. I screamed. I cried all day, and worse when I learned of the Pentagon being hit, and God knows one of my friends over there might get hurt, God I hoped not! It did not turn out what I hoped that they are safe, as three weeks later I found out three of my Pentagon friends have died. Worse, my things arrived from Washington on Sept. 27th, some boxes had burnt smell, in my books, brought me sharp memories of September 11, 2001, right in my home! So I could not touch them until in late December, was not emotionally ready for it. Oh, I was torn apart inside since the sad day that changed America, the World and all of us here. I worried so much for my dozens of friends in Washington, DC for anthrax attacks, really scared for my dear friends' safety! And the war in Afghanistan did bring some hope and triumph but when American soldiers, I still cry. I cried so many times, every time I hear America patriotic songs, especially "God Bless America" and the pipes playing "Amazing Grace" also the bugle "Taps," too hard for me to take. This is too much, too strong to make me cry. Now my heart is so close to America, much closer than ever!! Especially to Washington, DC, once my home of 6 great years of those I studied there, majored in political sciences, ! loved every minute there! Now this is sad it hit Washington, DC, like a hole in my heart and it still hurt. Though, never married I pretty much try to be handling emotional needs on my own, even though I held on to my little eaglet "Rummy" if I needed some consolation. Uncorrected version: As I have relocated to Canada after graduating at Gallaudet University 4 months earlier, I was just settling in a new apartment home only days before the tragedy hit. Less than 6 weeks to September 11, 2001 I left Washington DC, I behind my many dear American friends whom I called my great big "family" of hearts. My last "home" was a VOA housing up on Columbia Pike, where I was doing some volunteering and helping other Washingtonians and Virginians getting about their day. That place is only two bus stops from the Pentagon Metro. Right on Columbia Pike, gosh, I remember it so well. Met wonderful people young and old, those folks need help and support of moral kindness. Wished I could do more, but my mom in Canada has been veru ill so I decided to head home, took Amtrak Superliner to my other favorite visitor's spot, Chicago, Illinois then switched trains to Northern Express to Grand Forks, North Dakota, Canada's southermost neighbor and best friend to the south. Along with me, I took home, a toy American eagle from Nature's company store at the Pentagon City store, I called him, "Rummy". Gosh, I am gonna miss the states so much and I cried on the train, looked out at the great sights of Harpers Ferry, Washington skyline, and Chicago's skyscrapers, the Sears Towers, man... this is America the Beautiful, now arriving to the golden plains of America, to be home. Just moved in my apartment on 3rd, still got my things in storage in Arlington, Virginia only a mile or two from the grandest favorite "the Pentagon" and had made arrangements to have my belongings transferred from Washington DC to Winnipeg, Manitoba CANADA, arrived much later towards October. That morning, for four years I always had that 24K gold necklace chain round my neck, is gone forever. That is September 11, 2001. I was sleeping on the cot with lots of pillows and blankets, a bit like Scandinavia style of sleeping. I woke up, swore at myself, to get up, get up, get up, get up .... was "disturbed like an angry eagle" awaken by the angry spirits. That was 0735 CDT (Central Time) So I got up on my feet, my tee shirt and and pants still on, made coffee on. Turned on my computer, saw my friend from New Jersey being online, I guess he was doing emails - but he was supposed to be going to one of his classes that morning. At 0743 CDT, I was puzzled, so okay I decided to send him an online greeting, "Good Morning" and he told me all of a sudden, to turn on CNN. And I said, "what a morning why I am so upset, waking up like this, now what's on CNN? Another major earthquake??" He swore it is not a Clancy movie anymore, that the World Trade Center was hit by a jumbo jet. With awe and horror in my eyes, I could not believe what I was seeing, I knew it I swore to myself that I finally figured it out why I woke up in such an upset state. Then I was watching Aaron Brown of CNN, in New York withthe WTC scene behind him, I saw another plane actually going in for the South Tower which I knew my friend Nicky was a worker of Cantor-Fitzgerald. I screamed. I cried all day, and worse when I learned of the Pentagon being hit, and God knows one of my friends over there might get hurt, God I hoped not! It did not turn out what I hoped that they are safe, as three weeks later I found out three of my Pentagon friends have died. Worse, my things arrived from Washington on Sept. 27th, some boxes had burnt smell, in my books, brought me sharp memories of September 11, 2001 right in my home! So I could not touch them until in late December, was not emotionally ready for it. Oh, I was torn apart inside since the sad day that changed America, the World and all of us here. I worried so much for my dozens of friends in Washington DC for anthrax attacks, really scared for my dear friends' safety! And the war in Afghanistan did bring some hope and triump but when American soldiers, I still cry. I cried so many times, every time I hear America patriotic songs, especially "God Bless America" and the pipes playing "Amazing Grace" also the bugle "Taps", too hard for me to take. This is too much, too strong to make me cry. Now my heart is so close to America, much closer than ever!! Especially to Washington DC, once my home of 6 great years of those I studied there, majored in political sciences, loved every minute there!! Now this is sad it hit Washington DC, like a hole in my heart and it still hurt. Though, never married I pretty much try to be handling emotional needs on my own, even though I held on to my little eaglet "Rummy" if I needed some consolation. This is the chapter in the human history no one will ever forget, that no one will ever be the same ever again. I do not think this chapter will ever end as long as we fight against terrorism!! Our Township is directly across the Arthur Kill waterway from Staten Island NY. It is approximately a 20 - 25 minute ride into Manhattan. I was at my desk at work that morning when I heard the first report of a plane "accident" on the radio. I thought, as those around me did, that the radio was playing a practical joke. However, in a few minutes I realized this sounded too real. I went to a news website on the internet to see a picture of the first tower burning. I was very upset, not believing that it was an accident. I began telling others in the office when I heard that a second plane had hit the second tower. I was now devastated, angry, upset. I went down to our Emergency Management Office to see the news reports. The room was full with approximately 25 - 30 Officers, and several civilians. There wasn't a sound from anyone. Is this a dream? Unfortunately we all knew it wasn't. In a few minutes our world changed dramatically. We were all thinking about people we know at Ground Zero. Were they safe? Then the first tower collapsed. We now knew that there would be an enormous loss of life. The second tower collapsed. We knew we must go help. Many of us went to Manhattan in the folowing days to do whatever was necessary. The site was worse than anyone could ever imagine. My dad called me, "turn on the television", he aid. "Dad", I told him,"remember I'm at work and I don't have a television." He was out of breath and talking quickly, "terrorists have crashed planes into the World Trade Center in New York City. Get out of your building, get out of there." A co-worker was in my office and I quickly told her and another co-worker outside my office heard us and mmediately turned on the radio and attempted to get news through the Internet. Soon, nearly all the 60+ employees on our floor had heard the news as we shared it over cubicles and out of office doors. My dad continued to be anxious for my welfare, since I work in a high-rise building, though only about one-third the height of the WTC towers. I asked him, "Dad, maybe two planes just crashed in mid-air over the buildings." I just couldn't believe that someone had purposefully done such a thing. But as I heard the news from my co-workers and I turned on my own radio, I learned that he was right. I assured him that I would be alright and told him that I loved him before we hung up. Later my brother called me saying the same thing, "Sis, get out of that building, get away from there." I assured him that I was okay and probably going to be okay. It was still incredulous to me that people would do such a horrible thing. Within a few minutes of this, my daughter called me from Ashtabula, Ohio in tears. She had turned on the television to see the second place hit the South Tower. Later, I was so thankful because when I looked at the flight path of United Flight 93, I realized that its flight had been changed from Cleveland, Ohio and probably flew over my daughter's home on its way to its terrible end in Pennsylvania. Today, I realize that people do such things. It is a fact that makes me more uneasy in my work place and, actually, in other familiar places as well. Now I carry my cell phone with me everywhere. I always tell my husband where I am going and when I expect to return. I am more watchful of the people around me and my surroundings, while at the same time, I try to let those close to me, including my co-workers, know that I appreciate them. A few days after the attacks a co-worker came to my office and gave me one of the lovely pewter hearts which her husband had given her. She said she wanted me to know that she values our friendship. I told her that I would carry it with me always as a remembrance of the care we should give one another. Now I know more of the story of why my parents were so worried that day. My dad and brother were talking together that morning and my mother was listening to a local radio station when she heard that a plane had crashed into the 'tower'. She immediately called for my dad and brother to be quiet because since it was a local station, she thought it was my work place. When they learned it was the WTC in New York City, though they were not as worried as before, they immediately recognized that this could happen anywhere. It bothers me that they suffered even one moment of worry and concern for my welfare. My dad passed away in April of 2002. In fact, on September 11, 2001, he was awaiting surgery that would, we hoped, give him more time to live. The surgery was postponed until November 30 and we had over four more months to have him with us. Tell us your story: In 2001 I was a graduate student and teaching assistant at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, I was off on September 11th and had a dentist's appointment at 11:30am that day. I had slept in until I woke on my own around 9:30am. My radio in my room was set to 106.7 WJFK out of Fairfax, VA and Howard Stern was on. Nothing interesting was happening, and not being a fan of Stern's show I turned it off and went back to sleep for a bit. About 9:45am the phone rang, it was my mom who was working at the Damascus, MD Community Library. She had said a plane had hit the World Trade Center and wanted me to turn on the TV to see what was going on. I turned on the Today show and saw one of the towers smoking heavily. The newsreader said it had been a small plane that had hit the tower and I related it to my mom, along with the comment that a plane had hit the Empire State Building and my thoughts that this was just an unfortunate accident. After I hung up the phone, I went back to the living room and watched the Today Show. It was then that I saw the second plane hit. I was shocked. I'm not sure if I said or thought "Oh S---", but it was there. Immediately I called the History Department at UMBC, they had a TV on and Carla the secretary told me she had seen it too. She asked if I was ok and I said I was. We talked a bit more and then I called my mom again. She had just heard the news as well. I was upset almost crying but not quite. I kept watching and then turned to CNN, at about 10 the news broke of the plane hitting the Pentagon. It was almost like being punched, I called Mom and Carla again, Mom didn't know about the Pentagon and neither did Carla. After talking for a bit, I hung up the phone. About the same time I saw the first tower collapse. I was enraged. I was thinking about the people in the building and the rescuers who came to save them and I began screaming at the TV about how whoever had done this didn't give the victims a chance to survive. Sobbing, I went outside to our flagpole in the front yard and lowered our American flag to 1/2 mast and wept. I went back inside and sat down and cried again. I was completely emotionally drained. By the time my dentist appointment came around I knew I was going to be late. I decided to go anyway. Almost out of defiance in order to show that I could live my own life. I got to the dentist and sat down. Everyone looked shell-shocked. After a wait I sat down in the chair and just listened to the radio. The office was going to have to close early since the schools in Montgomery County were closing and folks had to get their kids. After a brief cleaning I heard lots of helicopters and the roar of jets. I had to excuse myself and go outside and look. Ther flying over the town were 3 UH-1 Huey's a blackhawk and an MH-53. I didn't see the jets, but I certainly heard them. They were all heading northwest, towards NW Frederick County and I supose the Raven Rock Bunker complex. Indeed later on it turned out that was exactly where they were going and the passengers in the helicopters were members of the Congressional Leadership. After leaving the dentist's office, I went back home. About 1/2way home I pulled off the road and saw the 3 hueys heading back towards DC. Back at home at around 1pm my dad, who came home after Montgomery County's offices were closed, and I saw the two jets and the remaining helicopters bringing the congressional leaders back to DC. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My roommate knocked on my door waking me up. I sorta stumbled over and talked to him. He said all this "shit" was going down. So I turned on my tv and we both just stood there in our underwear and watched. It didn't really register with me at first. I thought it was some sort of special effect for a tv show or movie. One tower was on fire. The announcer said something about a plane hitting it...it seemed to me like it wasnt that big a deal. I mean planes crash all the time. Then a second plane hit the other tower. My roommate freaked. My frist thought was "dang...I hope this doesnt mess up my plane tickets" (I was heading outta the country to visit my girlfriend a week later). I know that sounds caddy to think that but I'm just being honest. People always say they get this moment of horror or clarity or some profound concept hits them or some crap....but for me it just sorta gradually sunk in through the rest of the day. I went to my classes that day, I remember the campus was empty, I mean like absolutely no one was there, like I was the sole survivor in a holocaust of fear. My first class was religion. Coincidentally the class was mostly a split between jewish kids and arabic kids (Im niether). The conversations got pretty heated, everyone started pointing the finger. Our Prof. sorta just sat back and watched, I think he saw a microcosm in the class of what was happening outside. Everyone angry, everyone scared, everyone hurt. I don't remember being really scared. I live on the west coast and it seemed then (and now) that nothing major has ever happened on this side of the states (knock on wood). But living in south central L.A. you get used to hearing a lot of racket from neighbors, cars, and all the ghetto birds (planes) flying out of LAX. When I got back to my apt I noticed that too. It was eerily quiet. Not one solitary plane was in the sky. I dont really even remembers birds chirping. It was like all of LA was holding its breathe...just waiting like the rest of the country. I remember doing the regular deal everyone else probably did...calling their family just to make sure no one died from shock or whatever. We all went over it to each other, trying to make some kind of sense out of it. Osama Bin Laden's name started coming up on the news and for the first time I felt like a real emotion. They showed his picture and I was truly enraged. I wanted to shove my baseball bat through my tv, when his face was on it. I think if he had been in that room, I wouldve really honestly tried to kill him. I started just harboring this hate you know? Every time the Taliban were shown on tv over the next few days...I wanted to kill them. Arabic people on tv or the streets around my house, it didnt matter to me, I wanted them all dead. Rage doesn't usually discern... But I also felt conflicted. Because, you see, my girlfriend at the time was arabic too. When I went to see her a week later, it was great. She was worried something might happen to me on the flight and totally happy I was with her. When I got to her home, her family was all there, all glued to the tube, like deer caught in someones headlights. They were relieved to see me. Which sorta caught me off guard...cause they're arabic too. Her Dad said he had cried when the towers collapsed. Her mother had prayed for all the orphans and widows. And now they were terrified for their family back home in the middle east. (I doubt any of them were Taliban). They were scared to really go out, and when we all heard about the bus load of muslim kids that got stoned...well I sorta understood their fear. Now I look back on all of that over a year later and I still want some justice for what happened to all those people in New York. But more than that I want people to just take a breather before acting rash. Evil begets evil and shit happens to everybody. I think the question is, how will you respond to it? Ben Laden's plan will only have truly worked if we spread his message of terror. If we act violently, begrudginly, accusingly to others we will only validfy his lies. It sounds cliche...but what if America acted in love? Totally oblivious to what was happening, I hopped in the truck to go home, expecting to hear the local talk show host who is normally on at that time in the morning. The news of the first plane was just breaking over the air. First reports were coming through that it was apparently a small plane (like a Cessna) and it appeared to be a bad accident. Believe it or not, the station went back to regular programming and said they would keep us posted. I thought nothing of it and put in a CD, listening to music the rest of the 15 minute drive home. When I got there, I flipped on the tv to catch the last hour of the Today Show. Like everybody else in America, I was shocked by what was going on. I called my mom, and best friend who live in a much smaller town then I do. They were both at work and I had no idea what was going on. I let them know that everything in Atlanta was normal, but I would let them know the second that anything changed. At this point, nobody knew if more attacks on large cities were coming, but (looking back) I did something really stupid and went to downtown Atlanta to try and find my boyfriend. I finally found him on the Georgia Tech campus and let him know what was going on. We spent the afternoon glued to CNN, watching in shock as the events unfolded. We went with his roomie to eat at Ruby Tuesday for dinner, but the mood was pretty rotten, and we watched the tv at the bar, as our lives were changed forever by this senseless tradgedy. The thing that sticks in my head the most that day, was the message on the traffic signs in Atlanta. Usually they give travel times and warnings about wrecks, but today, of course was different. They simply said "National Emergency--ATL Airports Closed." I don't know why I was so moved by these signs, but they brought tears to my eyes to see those words, National Emergency. My heart goes out to everyone that was affected that day; whether it be those who were lost, those who lost a loved one, or just those like me watching from a distance. I was on a global field trip for the University of Cincinnati to study the culture or Berlin. It was my first trip to Europe, my first trip overseas period. We had just gotten done with our tour for the day, it was actually the only short day we had on the trip so we could go off on our own and explore. My husband and I along with two friends had our city map out trying to locate the nearest U-Bahn/S-Bahn (their rail system) and a middle-aged gentleman approached us and asked if we needed any help. We told him happily no and thanked him for asking then he paused since we had replied in German but two of us were speaking English to each other. He asked if we were Americans. We smiled and nodded. His face completely changed and became saddened and sympathetic. I'll never forget his face. He asked if we'd heard. We stared blankly at him. Our hostel didn't have a TV for us to watch and we were up and out on the streets with our lessons from sun up until well after dark. We hadn't heard anything because we hadn't been around anything that would have told us, not even a radio. It was late afternoon there, getting close to dinnertime. We were going to hit one more place we wanted to see and then head back for dinner. Here in the US the attack had just happened and the first news was just being broken to Europe. He told us in German that a New York subway had been bombed or something, there were many people dead, and it was terrorists. He told us there wasn't much news yet, but we should find a TV or radio, it was all over the airways. All of us were completely dumbstruck; we just stared at him like we didn't understand what we had just heard. He even started to try and tell us in English. We startled and nodded telling him we understood, but couldn't believe it. He apologized and wished us well and we stumbled away. Finding the train that took us back to the hostel we found many of our group stumbling in. At first we couldn't believe that someone bombed the subway again. It wasn't until we got back to the hostel that we finally learned what had really happened...and what was still happening. It was mind boggling to sit there watching the sun set as the day here was just beginning, and two hijacked planes were still missing. The hostel had put up a TV on the counter for us to watch, knowing we were there. We all crowded around it with our two professors and guide, who is originally from America as well. Just as we arrived they were just getting footage of the Pentagon. For the rest of the night we were glued to the screen, watching the first images come half way across the world. We even went to do our laundry down the street and it had a small cafe attached to it. We sat in there and just stared mindlessly at the screen. Another couple in there looked over at us and heard us talking in English, again we were asked if we were American. They shook their heads sadly and apologized, saying how sorry they were this happened here and how sad it was. A girl in our group had a brother that worked under the WTC, we found out later that he had been late to work and had survived, but it really brought it home to our group. The most amazing thing was the days that followed though. The outcry and outpouring of love and support brought tears to my eyes...still does just thinking about it. That very night the American embassy was sealed off with a block periphery all the way around, armed guards and everything. Our professor didn't want us going to the vigil that night because he still was a bit worried about the responses. Some of us went anyway. Millions of flowers lined the block all the way around and the piles grew by the hour. Signs were already being posted. By the end of the week an additional corner street had to be blocked off to compensate for the flowers and people that constantly surrounded it in prayer and grief. People lined the streets for miles with American flags waving them in the air and singing our national anthem. People cried and sang together for us. They held a demonstration a two days later. Over 200,000 people marched the streets in support of the US. From what we were told the Berliners love to demonstrate, and this was a large demonstration, even for them. It had only been organized that morning. That is how fast word spread. I couldn't help but snap picture after picture of the signs and flowers. One large poster really struck my heart, it was posted by a group of friends and they had drawn the US and then Germany. They connected Berlin and New York with a large bridge that crossed the ocean and it read Condolences across it. The slogan became "Our deepest sympathy". The Berliners expressed over and over again their anger at his attack and their sympathy for us, saying over and over again that we were our sister country. The night after the attack they put up a condolence book for all the Berliners who wanted to send their sympathy and thoughts. They were supposed to send it here when it was done. People lined up for miles, wrapping the streets. They waited hours upon hours to sign that book. The city finally extended the hours you could come and sign the book and then had to put out several books because they were filling up so fast. My husband and I went and signed the book as well. The group as a whole was interviewed by the newspapers and on several news programs. I collected many of the magazines they published as the days went on. My husband and I and our two friends also eventually went on to explore more of Europe traveling to the south. We visited M?nchen and F?ssen Germany, Venice and Verona Italy. Austria, France, and Switzerland. M?nchen had held their own demonstrations and had a giant cross made out of red roses and white daisies surrounded by more flowers brought by the people as a memorial in their famous square, and that was just one of the memorials there. The Berliners brought me to my knees in humbleness with their love and support. The first images of the world's reactions, which were broadcast much more extensively in Europe than here from what I'm told, were astonishing. The people that poured into the streets in cities all over Europe in outcry and to show their support for the US brought us all to tears over and over again. The day of the attack...I had never felt so alone. I felt angry because I didn't think they could possibly understand. Within hours I couldn't believe how understanding they were, how open their hearts were to us...for us. It was the first time that I not only felt so proud to be an American...but it was the first time I felt I was part of something so much larger than that. I was part of a loving and united human race. It was the first time that I truly believed that maybe one day we really all could be part of one greater good. It breaks my heart to remember and think about the pain that was caused that day, but it continues to amaze me how much good can come out of people when the need arises. It changed my life, it changed my view and respect of life, it changed how I treated people and how I reacted to situations. I'm thankful for what it has taught me and it gives me strength to know that those who died didn't die in vain. They gave not only to their country...they gave something far greater to the world. Imus said that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. First of all, why Imus, I dont like Imus. I thought, What idiot flew his Cessna into a skyscraper? I also thought, Well it isnt the first time some idiot did this, just like the Empire States Building in 1945. I immediately thought it must be foggy in New York, just like it was in 1945. I got off the bus and made my usual walk to the parking garage elevator. Just as I was about to step in the elevator I heard that another plane had hit the other tower. The elevator doors closed and my radio went dead. I looked at an African American student in a yellow jacket with green trim. His hair was about an inch long, curly, and he looked a little like Marcus from work. I remember him being rather handsome. I looked at the radio in his ear and asked, Did you hear that? He look at me with frightened acknowledgement and nodded. I then said something to the effect of, Two planes have hit both World Trade Center Towers. I then remember thinking that wasnt technically correct. One plane hit each World Trade Center Tower, but my mind was competing with the terrorism train of thought that was racing to the surface. Everyone else looked confused, except that man in the yellow jacket who looked at me with the look of knowledgeable agreement. I then walked into the library, put my stuff down, and waited for the call from my mom. Its one of those moments when you know your mom will call; like when a plane engine falls into a Chevron Station Parking lot, or a weapons cache is found in some Chechnyian rebel encampment with batteries bearing the Texaco star. (Both of those are true BTW) My phone rang, we spoke, and I walked down the hall to watch the TV. I didnt work. I just sat in the little old school desks that looked like Mrs. Debbie Sheas classroom with everyone else and watched in silence. I remember this supposedly worldly educated woman who was arguing that this wasnt an act of terrorism. I remember saying something snide like, call a spade, a spade. I took place in a prayer vigil and went home. I sat with Tiziana, my Italian roommate, who lit a candle for each of us and put it in the window. She put an American Flag on the door even though she isnt an American. I thought it was sweet. At some point, Arancha tells me about Basque terrorists. I then spoke with Roger. We talked about Flight 11. How many times he took that flight on a Tuesday morning, because it was cheaper and we were struggling college students. We spoke about how he was going to come out that weekend and would have taken that flight. However, true to form for both of us, we got in some big fight about something that no longer matters. I told him not to come, not that he would have come after the fight we had anyway. I am still thankful that we are hard headed opinionated people; its what makes me love him and what kept him alive. …..then comes a couple of days later…. Im on the phone with my Mom again who says that my appartment is on TV and am I going home. I say yes and I'll call her later. Then my Aunt Vickey calls, so I know I'm looking at a one to two hour conversation. Im walking to my apartment and the way is all cordoned off by this apartment complex. I think it is called the Park Street something or other at the time, but that place had changed names maybe four times in two years. I sit there and wait and talk. I watch the TV cameras. I see a policeman or two, but its obvious that most of these guys are FBI. Then someone tells me that Mohammad Atta lived there. I tell my Aunt. We talk about the strange coincidences of my life. Later that night, I talk with Tizi about that time we were in the Huntington Market (which is/was in a Hassidic Jewish neighborhood) and commented that only in America would you find a Russian owned market with a group of Hassidic Jews, a Roman Catholic, an Evangelical Christian, and two Arab men. And all were broadcasting the horrible news. My cousin Joyce called my Dad and told him to turn on the news. It seems so unreal, it was like this is not happening? how could this happen? and why did it happen? I was listening to one story on the radio where this woman said that her husband was in the building and she did'nt know his fate. I felt her pain, right when she was being interviewed, low and behold her husband appeared. Oh how she sobbed,I could'nt even begin to image how this woman must have felt. But I could feel her pain and agony through the radio. You know it's truly sad that it takes something so devasting to bring people,famlies, friends, and neighbors together. I remember walking into my homeroom that morning with the tv on and I watched in horror as the second airplane was about to hit. At first I was very naive and just prayed that they were accidents but the reality was to strong to continue to think that. At that moment the seniors were called into a senior meeting and the rest of the school into their testing rooms or classrooms. At the close of the senior meeting we returned to our regular schedule and at the exact moment that I walked into my classroom the first tower began to fall. See I was also several months pregnant and all I could think about was the fact that my child is going to be entering a world that can be beautiful, but at the same time very cruel and inhumane. My thoughts turned to my unborn daughter and I just prayed that God would bring peace throughout the world because I didn't want my child to ever have to witness such a cruel act ever in her lifetime. I wish I could've done more than pray and give donations, and even though I was in Indiana the impact of the attacks were very strong. I was confused as to what it was about. When I heard that the towers had been attacked, I was in disbelief. I was dazed by it. Then I listened to the news some more. I began to feel shock and started to weep. I kept thinking, "no, this is not happening. It is not, this is a nightmare and I am going to wake up." I remember calling my husband at work and asking if he knew. He said yes. I kept saying to him, "oh my God. This is really going on out there." I told him I loved him. I told him I was greatful that we were here, safe. I got off the phone and hugged my son. I was glued to the television, in hopes that someone on there would assure me I was not seeing or hearing what I was. The images still stick in my mind. All the pictures. I was not there, but looking at those images, I may as well have been there. So many people lost. People that I never knew, but were my brothers and sisters anyway according to God. People I will never have the pleasure of meeting. People with families left alone. If I have learned anything from this, it is that the American people are strong and brave and it makes me proud of what I am. I will never know what is was like to be there, to see the pain and damage, but I was there in heart and prayer. I will never forget and I may not know the names of all of our heros. Tell us your story: I was at work and I remember the receptionist calling on the phone to tell everyone that a plane has just flew into the World Trade Tower. A few minutes later the second plane flew into the other building. I remember how we all stood there wondering what was going on. Then it hit how everyone thought we were under attach. All I could think about was was daughter, who was at school and my husband was away in Maine on a hunting trip. I just wanted to be surronded by my family but I couldn't get in touch with my husband anyhow, but I was able to get to my daughter. That evening all I did was cry and hold my daughter for dear life. How empty I felt that nothing could be done for all those people. I never did get a hold of my husband until a couple days later and I think he was still in shock by the whole incident. Coming home from his trip in Maine he drove through New York and still couldn't believe what he saw. I have lost my sister a year prior who was also very young and I thought I would see life in a different way, but when I saw what happen on Sept. 11, 2001 I will never take life for granted. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Hardin-Simmons University was about to begin the Inaguration of out new college president. A friend of mine stayed the night with me, and we stayed up real late so we did not attend the Inaguration. We were laying in bed just laughing and talking about all differnet kinds of things when my phone rang. You see I was raised in a military family and understand a little differently than most American's about what truly goes on. Both my parents were in before I was born. Mom got an honorable discharge when she had my older brother. We lived in several places, California, Illinois, Oklahoma, Texas and England. So anything militarially I get a little different picture. My older brother in now serving in the Air Force, the same branch my father retired from. Mom called to ask if I had heard the news, we had no idea what was going on. So I turned on the television. She had already talked to Ray, my brother who is stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi. He was base lock down. He could not leave the base untilthey knew what was to go on. The is the same thing that happened when my father ws in the Air Force during the Gulf War. Mom sadi that they told Ray that he needed to be prepared to leave at any time. No one was allowed to take leave or leave the area. My dad said that if he was calleed he would go. My father loves his country and what he did for the Air Force. Even though he has four kids he still would go so that he could serve. I was terrified that day. Not knowing what was going on or what would happen. We stayed in very close contact with Ray to keep up with any news of him being deployed. Dad was never called back to active duty, though he specialities might be needed soon. Ray was deployed on March 2, 2002. We were not told anything but that he was going. Mom recieved an e-mail from him yesterday saying that he arrived and that he was fine. I am kind of scared for him, being over there, but I know that he knows he is fighting for a great cause. Not many people understand what it is like to have someone you care deeply about fighting the war. We as military people get use to having people close to us leaving with barely any notice and not knowing for sure when they will return. Just because we know that it is there job and duty it is still hard. No matter what the circumstance we try our best to keep moving on, keep our head up, and keep living.
