It was 8:30am, I was getting my son breakfast, my husband had the day off. We had the televsion on watching childrens t.v.. My sister-in-law called us and as if we were watching the new as there was what she had hear as a boom had gone off at the pentigone. We switch the channel and witness the plane hit the first tower. The only thought that went throught my head was I had to hold my son. Right then and there I grabbed him. He was a 11 months old, He just hugged me back unawear of what had happened. I looked at my husband and we all hugged each other. I had to get ready for work, it all seemed unreal somehow. Like I knew something that know one else new. I drove to work in a daze, it was all over the radio. I work in a restraunt. The others came in and we were all discussing it. We all thought that all the businessess in the area would close early to let everyone go home to be with there loved ones, we expected no business. We were wrong , the restraunt was packed. Everyone came in looking for news. we have three rooms with televions. There were people waiting to sit, wanting to find out anything that could explain what and why it happened. I ended my work day in the same daze it had begun. Driving home I was in the same fog as driving in. When I came home, I held my son for what seemed like hours, but was only minutes. Hereing the story of the man who sent his wife message over the answering machine. I thought of how I would feel if it was my husband , to never see or hear from him again. To never have my son know the real person he was. My heart cried out for her,and the children I didn't know if she had. At 4.00am I was awakened by the phone ringing beside my bed.It was my son in Wasington state telling me not to be alarmed,he and his family were just fine,but he wanted me to turn on the tv,something terrible had happened in New York city,he didn't know if we had been bombed or what,but something terrible was happening. When we turned on the tv,every station was telling the nation that an airliner had just crashed into one of the Twin Towers. I sat mesmerized and actually thinking if this was actually true,or a cruel joke. That thought lasted only a couple of seconds,because as I sat watching,I saw a plane go into the second tower,I gasped and then watched in horror as the towers came down. The emotions I felt were a mixture of disbelief,tremendous sorrow,anger,and fear. Was our country going to be in World War 3? All that day,I sat in front of my television,watching the events unfold. I prayed.I prayed for all the people in those towers,their loved ones,for the people in the airplanes,in the pentagon,and for this country of ours. Living in Hawaii,I had a tendancy to think of us as being far removed from "things" happining on the "mainland". Not anymore.There were people from Hawaii who lost their lives that day,in the Towers,and the airplanes.I didn't lose a loved one that day but I felt a loss just the same. I can remember hearing the frightning voices of people calling into the radio stations claiming there was an attack at the WTC in NY. I could'nt believe what I was hearing, so I turned on the TV, and sure enough the damage was done. I was unable to comprehend what was going on and why this was happening. Soon after, turning on the TV I walked through the house with such an eerie and an array of feelings. I asked my sister-inlaw if she knew what was going on? She replied and looked at me in a daze. Later, that morning I wasn't sure how to go about my day; do I get ready for school? Do I wait for more news? I just didn't know. Finally, I decided to get dress and carry on like normal, however; it was not a normal day, not for me nor anyone else in the world. Suddenly, it occurred to me that whatever problems I had been having didn't seem to matter to me at that moment and some time afterwards. It was an extremely difficult day to get though, for the obvious reasons of course, but also due to the fact that I had friends in New York, and no way of contacting them. Luckily everyone was ok, but it was days before I was able to find that out. Although every one I personally knew was all right, there were two people close to me whom had lost a loved one. One of which being Chad. He is an incredible, selfless person whom through this year has always been there when you needed him. He can always seem to make me laugh even when I think I can't smile. Always thinking of other's and asking if there's anything he can do to help, whilst he himself has been in pain. And so- Chad, I have tried to come up with a million ways to say I am thinking of you today 9/11.. But cant seem to put it into words. May you find strength to get through today with friends, family and the memories of your lost soulmate. May you find the peace in your heart and peace of mind, as you continue your journey down life's road. We wept not only as Americans, but as humans. One year later, here we stand. Mourning. Comforting. Sharing a pain that is now considered part of our history. I had to leave my 1 1/2 year old daughter and my husband in our home in Arizona to be with my father and step-mother in California. My father was scheduled for major surgery at the veterans hospital in San Diego on September 12th. My father had a huge abdominal aorta aneurysm that could burst at any moment. The surgeons were giving him 50/50 odds of making it through surgery because they were afraid that the aneurysm may burst and shred apart once they got him open. Since he had to be at the hospital the 11th I drove out the day before. Leaving my baby girl for the first time for a whole week. Although my baby would be with her father, my husband, I was very stressed and sad leaving her and facing what I had to face in California. So I headed for my father's home in Riverside, California. The evening was uneventful except for my sadness at the seperation from my daughter and the uneasiness of what may lay ahead for my father in the next few days. September 11th, I awoke at 6:00am California time to prepare for the day ahead. My father was due at the hospital by 10:00am. My father was awake before everyone and had turned on the television and could not believe his eyes. I was in the bathroom and heard one of the main anchors from the news (Dan Rather or someone of that sort) talking excitedly, not his normal tone, so I stepped into the den where my father was pacing in front of the television and I saw bodies falling from the first building of the WTC. As I stood there trying to comprehend what I was seeing another airplane hit the second tower of the WTC. I realized at that very moment that we were at war. It seemed as though everything was moving in slow motion. I headed back to the bathroom to complete my routine when it hit me that my mother was in Manhatten, New York City! She had gone to visit family! Then my breath went away. I sort of announced to my father and step-mother that my mother was in that city where all of those terrible things are happening! Of course I could not get through to New York City by that time, so I was pretty much a mess. I called my step-father and my brother and told them to try and contact mom in New York and let me know as soon as possible how she was. My mother knew I would be a mess and in the meantime got ahold of my brother who then got ahold of me and told me she was okay. Of course I knew she was some 100 blocks away from the WTC but it did not matter, I could not imagine what would happen next! After I calmed down, Dad and I went to fill the car with gas for our trip to San Diego. During that short drive to the gas station I became completely consumed with thoughts of my husband and child in Arizona. Although Arizona was a long way from what was happening across the country, I was consumed with fear for my child. I wanted to hold her and protect her but I could not. My emotions were battling inside of me but I could not voice them because we had to keep my father as calm as possible. If his blood pressure were to rise he would be at a much higher risk of something terrible happening. So I took a deep breath and became the strong one. I called home to my child and heard her laughing in the background, while giving instructions to her nanny on what to do in case of emergency, I silently prayed for our country. My dad, stepmom and myself loaded ourselves into the car and headed off to San Diego. During the drive we listened to the news and were shocked and getting very frightened when it was announced that the pentagon had been hit by a passenger plane. As I was driving towards my father's uncertain future, I wondered only to myself if any of us were to have a future. I could not believe what was happening. I wanted to scream and cry and hold my husband and child, see my mother and tell everyone how very much I loved them but I could do none of these things. I had to carry on with the task at hand. Enroute to our hotel where we were to stay for the week we watched the naval base go on high alert and lines of cars lined up outside the base gate to get in for duty etc. After checking in at the hotel we then headed for the hospital where my father was to check in. Even the hospital was on full alert with armed guards out in front checking belongings and IDs. As we sat waiting for the hospital admissions to call my father's name we watched more of the horror on the news. Every television station was covering these events as they unfolded. I remember looking around the waiting room at all the veterans watching the television, and wondering what thoughts were going through their minds. As the day went on everywhere we went we were bombarded by information and terrible loss. Somehow we made it through this horrible Tuesday and the days that followed. We watched coverage of these events during the 15 hours of my father's surgery. He made it through and got a second chance at life. We finally got my mother out of New York the following week, but dreaded her having to fly all the way back to California. We were afraid. Everything seemed off and nothing was ever the same again. That Saturday after the attacks, I was returning to my hotel from visiting my father. As I got out of my car I heard explosions coming from across the bay. Everyone that was outside the hotel stopped and looked to the sky, wondering if this was our time. It turned out that Sea World was having their fireworks display. Unfortunately the damage was done, we were all gun shy. I finally went home the next day when my father was completely out of danger. Driving back to Arizona I listened to the news all the way home. I was so anxious to see my husband and child, thirty miles outside of my hometown of Chandler, Arizona, I finally cried. I had been praying. I had been strong. Knowing that I was only a few minutes from holding by baby, I finally allowed myself the chance to grieve. One year later I am suddenly thrust back into that uneasy, queasy feeling of disbelief, sadness and pure horror that any human being could have so little regard for life. I am blessed to have my family with me, alive and well. I cherish every moment. Last night September 10th, 2002, I called each one of my family members and told them how much I loved them because you never know what tomorrow will bring. I told her I had not heard of any problem and she said, "turn on your tv and listen to the news." I was shocked at the terrorist attack on our native soil. I immediately called my Grandson and found out he was all right. Later, I started trying to find out if the father of my niece and nephew was injured. He worked in the Pentagon building and after searching the names on the Internet and not finding out anything, I remembered I had the children's e-mail address and e-mailed them to find out if Mike was all right. Mike e-mailed me back that night and I was thrilled to learn that he survived the ordeal. He was in the building at the time of the attack and said he had to run to make it out. The children had recently lost their mother and I thank God that He spared them from losing their father. My prayers and love are still with the many who lost loved ones or had loved ones injured. When the show was over I turned to the news to see what the weather was going to be like. That is when I first saw the results of the first plane. At first I thought that something had just gone wrong with the plane and it was an accident. After watching for a few minutes I then realized what was going on. I was scared and confused at the same time. I was holding on to my daughter and I didn't want to send her to school. She was only seven and all I had. I just didn't want to let go of her. I then thought about it and realized the best thing to do for her was send her to school. She was not going to understand everything and was better off there where she could carry on a half-way normal day. When my daughter got on the bus I went back inside and called my father on his cell phone. He was at work and he answered and I told him that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. He didn't say much right away but then he said something like you have got to be kidding me. He said he was in the middle of a meeting and I should call him back in a little while, but before I got off the phone with him I saw the second plane crash into the World Trade Center. I think I screamed into the phone and he asked what was going on. I told him what happened and he just couldn't believe it. He said to call him back in a few minutes. After I got off the phone I just sat there in horror. I could not believe what was going on. I thought to myself this is not happening. I just sat on my couch and could not take my eyes off the television. After a little while I called my dad back and he said they knew what was going on and were listening to it I think on the radio. I was on the phone with him for a little while and then once again I screamed into the phone. The first tower had collapsed. I told him what had happened and he did not say anything for a few moments. He said he had to go and to call him back later in the day. I then called my mother at work to see if she knew what was going on and they were already watching everything on television. I also talked with my sister briefly on the phone. I sat on the couch most of the morning just having a hard time taking it all in. I cried a little but I think I was in to much of a shock to know what to do. I started to remember watching the Oklahoma City bombing on television and how horrible that was. I thought this can't be happening again. To see the horror the peoples faces as they were running for safety. To see the reactions of the media and television reporters as everything unfolded was something I will never forget. What happended Sept.11 has changed my life forever. I have lost a sister to murder so I can relate to what some of the familys who lost a loved one are feeling. To have someone taken from you before their time is something that is very hard to get over. My faith has become stronger and my beliefs and outlook on life have totally changed. I want my daughter to grow up in a better world, but that will not happen if we do not stick together and start changing things ourselves. We have united as a country but we also have to relearn family values and remember what life is all about. We never know what tomorrow will bring but we can try to make it something wonderful. To the familys that lost a loved one that day I know that my little sister Kristina was at the gaits of heaven to welcome them to their new home. They are at peace and we must go one with our lives and work to make it a better world because it is what they would have wanted. During the beginning of class, we had a metting, which I thought was something new the teacher was doing. Then I was confused when she said, "The Twin Towers have been hit." I didn't want to ask what the Twin Towers were,since i thought i would be made fun of not knowing what they were. When I returned home, I turned on the TV, and instead of cartoons, i saw recorded images of both towers up in flames and I asked my mom whats happenning, and asked if this was a movie review. Then my Mom said,"Bad men are blowing up the buildings to scare us." This was when I thought of my friend telling me right after school, that his dad was working in one of the towers and that was when I didn't feel confused anymore and instead felt sorrow. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had booted up my computer and signed on to the internet around 8:30 am that morning. I left the computer to sit out on the front porch with my husband, who was waiting for someone to pick him up. He left and I returned to the computer about 9:20 and saw an IM message from my cousin in NY saying........turn on the TV a plane has hit the WTC. By that time, the second plane had hit and when I turned the TV on, the images were something out of Dante's inferno. My first thoughts were for my son who works on Wall St and who frequently visits clients at WTC, and also for my son in law who works in midtown Manhattan, but who also frequently has appointments at WTC. I was able to contact my daughter in New Jersey, who had just received a cell phone call from her husband........he was on the approach ramp to the Holland Tunnel......saw smoke coming from one of the towers and called his office.......as he was talking to someone there, he heard the noise of a very low flying plane.......looked up and witnessed the horror of the second plane slamming into the building. He was able to turn around and head back home safely. Meanwhile, I tried frantically to reach my son's wife by calling his home in LI, but was unable to get through. Phone lines were jammed for several hours.......It wasn't until five hours later that I learned my son had spent the night at a friend's condo in Hoboken NJ.......overslept until 8:45 and called his Wall St. office to say he'd be a little late. He walked out onto the terrace and saw the smoke and flames from the first tower........stood there in absolute disbelief.......ran into the apartment to get his friend and a camera and within several minutes, he saw and heard the second plane slam into the second tower........the view from the 19th floor of a building directly opposite the World Trade Center, was devastingly awesome......he saw debris flying everywhere and imagined that body parts were part of that debris. The photos he took are incredible. My story has a happy ending.....no one in my family was directly affected but one of my childrens' childhood friends, died in the holocaust at Cantor Fitzgerald. A few people we knew, were able to escape the building, one of whom had a close call when the first tower collapsed. It was indeed a Day of Infamy, one which far exceeds the horror of Pearl Harbor. Tell us your story: I remember my phone ringing, thinking it was my crew saying our airplane was fixed and we were ready to go. )We had gotten stuck in Dubuque qith a mechanical problem and did not make it to our layover in Portland, Maine.) It was my first officer but not telling me the a/c was fixed, but to turn on the tv and CNN. I watched while on the phone with him as smoke floated into the air around the WTC. We talked thinking someone had been fooling around and ended in tragedy. As, we talked, suddenly a second plane turned into the WTC. We sat in silence for a few moments letting the shock of it sink in. I remember both of us with cracking voices as we hung up the phone never more then a few doors away from each other. We went into the hospital at 7:00am to the maternity floor. We were so full of emotions because we knew our son would be born today. I turned on channel 6(Good Morning America) to help pass the time and to help concentrate on our labor. Before we knew it, the news broke in on Good Morning America and stated that the Twin Tower was on Fire. We watched the live news. Next we saw a second plane crash into the other tower. My heart felt like it fell into my stomach. I couldn't believe this was happening. We all know what happen next. The Penagon was attacked and then the plane went down in PA. Our Doctor and Nurses were all in our room with us watching the TV. I had our mothers with us as well. We were all crying and full of disbelief. I then started to wonder how I could bring a baby into this world. I watched that TV none stop! My Doctor came into our room again at 12:00 noon and stated that our hospital was placed on lock down and stand by in case they needed any help from NY with survivors. My husband and I were the only clients on the maternity floor this day. Our son was finally born at 6:09pm on Sept. 11th, 2001. When I looked into his blue eyes, he gave me back the Hope, Faith and love I thought the terrorists just took away from me. The terrorists really tried to destroy us that day, but something much higher and stronger made a miracle occur at the same time for me and my family. A life was born. I still have a hard time with the lives that were taken. I still have a hard time with my sons birthday. I still can't beleive so many lives were taken on Sept. 11th, 2001. All of a sudden, we heard that something had happened in NYC, we turned on the television, and there was the world trade center on fire, as our class was watching this in horror, thinking "what a terrible accident", the second plane hit the other tower, being 16 at the time, with no cares in the world at all, i was seeing the United States a country that I thought was untouchable, being torn to shreds, as I saw this unfold in front of my eyes, I realized "We are at war", I became very angry, and scared. Here I was in a small town on the shoreline in CT, just a few hundred miles away from where this was all was taking place, not knowing how safe i really was, just 15 miles from a nuclear power plant,I really felt as if I was in danger, it was in the only time in my life I ever remember being truly afraid for my life. At that time my son was 8 years old and I had just dropped him off at school and headed on to work. I work for the State of Maryland. It was a typical normal day and started my work day as I always had. About an hour of so later after I had gotten there, two people came running to my desk screaming that something horrible had happened in New York to the World Trade Center. I instantly got angry because one of the people was notorious for pulling pranks and I told them not to joke about something like that. But they kept insisting that it did happen. Someone brought a television in, and I was horrified to see the first tower in flames. I was shocked, speechless and terrified. The next thing I knew I saw this airplane hit the second tower and I screamed in horror. Our office was automatically placed on "lockdown" which means that no one could leave or enter the building. All I could think about was those people in those towers and how I prayed that each of them was able to get out. I thought about my son, my mother, and my brother. I was just in a daze about what I had just witnessed. I thought about my family in New York and was scared for them. My mother was able to get through on the phone to call me and to plead for me to come home because she was afraid that something was going to happen to me. I explained to her that I wasn't able to, because at this time I was considered an "essential employee". She started crying hysterically and was begging for all of us to leave because she was terrified for everyone, I finally convinced her to call down and told her that everything would be okay. I was finally able to leave my office building around 12pm. Traffic was a nightmare. Frantic people were trying to get to loved ones, getting their children from school, or just crying hysterically in the streets. We were at risk as a state because we are in close proximity to Washington, DC, so everything was chaotic. It is now September 10, 2006 and my son is now 13 years old. He still has nightmares about that day and is terrified about tomorrow, which is the 5th anniversary of September 11th. Four months after September 11, 2001, I discovered that I was pregnant with my second child. I was thrilled, but worried. Worried about my baby and my son's future. Did I want to bring another child into a world that would do these horrendous things to each other, like those sick madmen had done to us? I wondered if my children would ever be able to live in a world that was full of peace, kindness, and decency for all people. I gave birth to a beautiful little girl named Aaliyah. She is now 4 years old. But when I look into my children's eyes, I see hope. Hope that their generation would be able to change this world. Hope that they can look past the horrible things that they have seen and can try to make the world a better place. Hope that we can really unite as people and stop taking life for granted. I talk to my children about September 11th. Even though it's painful, I don't want them to ever forget it. Too many people sacrified their lives in order for them to live. At that time, my husband and I were living in California. We both woke up around 7:30am with a terrible feeling in our guts and neither one of us could fall back to sleep. A few hours later I was getting ready for an appointment when the phone rang. It was my brother calling to tell me that someone was attacking the towers in New York and a lot of people had been killed. I had no idea what he was talking about and told him to stop calling me about stuff like this because it wasn't funny. I then left for my appointment. I started to feel really dizzy and sick as I was driving and turned on the radio to keep my ming off the uneasy feeling. When I turned on the radio, it became too apparent that what my brother had told me was actually true and there had been 4 highjacked planes, 3 of them slamming into buildings the other crashing in Pennsylvania. I listened as people called into the radio stations giving their accounts of what was happening and the chaos that surrounded them. I got to my appointment still unaware of just how bad that day was going to get for me and my family. I got home about an hour later and my husband was watching the news. About and hour later we got the phone call that was to forever change our lives. My mother-in-law was on the other end telling my husband that our sister-in-law (my husbands brothers wife) was missing. She was supposed to have taken the flight a half an hour later than flight 93 but nobody had heard from her. Her cell phone had not been working during her trip to the East Coast. We had them paging her in the airport for her to call home, but nothing. Finally my father-in-law looked up the flight itineraries and found that the later flight was the exact same route as Flight 93 and we knew in our hearts that she must have gotten on Flight 93 on standby. A few hours later my mother-in-law called to confirm just that. Christine had gotten on Flight 93 and as we had seen on tv, not one of the passengers had survived that crash. It was so devastating and heartbreaking. The strange thing is that Christine had actually changed her flight several times on the 11th before finally getting on Flight 93 standby. Christine married my brother-in-law on June 2, 2001, and she had just had her 32nd birthday in August and now she was gone! Christine was such a great person. She had a wonderful heart and soul. We know that she is looking after us and is our Angel. At her memorial service, which took place a few weeks after the attacks, countless people talked about how she touched their lives and what she meant to them. I never realized how many people were blessed to have had the opportunity to meet her and have her in their lives. Christine will forever be missed but never forgotten. She was an inspiration to all of us and lived her life to the fullest and always tried to see the good in every situation. I guess now we just try to live day by day and try to stay positive and remember all of the joy and happiness that Chris brought to our lives. The hard part is actually coping with the fact that she is never coming home. I'm sure in time our hearts will heal, but it will be a long and difficult process. I don't think that any of us will ever feel complete again, but we have to be strong for each other and remember that Chris is with us in spirit. She will forever be loved! Tell us your story: It was a horrific day, our office scrambled through passenger records to see if we had any traveler's on the ill-fated flights. We did have one executive. We worked in a vacuum, trying to help stranded clients find a way home, some drove rental cars from Texas to Boston...the need to be with family was so strong. Three days later, the company I was employed with tearfully laid-off 54 of its 108 employees. It was a matter of survival, and understandable. It was frightening to be in a state of depression and confusion and jobless. The industy I loved and worked in for so many years was forever changed. In February I returned to school, updated my office skills and returned to the workforce as an administrative assistant in a corporate travel dept. at a biotech company. The road was filled with challanges, but in the true American Spirit I prevailed, as have others. Today, one year later, I cried as a moment of silence was observed, and the pain of that day returned. It will forever be painful, time the only healer.
