Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: As a young girl I visited the World Trade Center all the time. My sister worked in the building. Later in life, I too would work in that building. I have been up to the top many times...have eaten at Windows on the World. I used to have breakfast at the Vista Hotel every Saturday. I have spent endless hours in the center by the Globe just watching it turn ever so slowly and watching the water ripple. That building really isn't the World Trade Center...the place of American Capitalism. That place was a Wonderland to me. A place of exploration and great memories of my childhood. A lot of people have worked in the Trade Center. I worked for four years for a retailer on the Concourse. It was a great experience and I met wonderful people--New Yorkers, Foreigners, Kids and Adults. I left New York in 1990 to move to Florida. When I saw the buildings fall down, I too was crushed and all those memories came flying back to me. You see, whenever I went back up to N.Y. to visit I would always visit this fun place of my youth. I don't think I will ever have the strength to visit that place anymore. I think it would be too hard. I was in New York about three weeks after the attack to finish up some details on my Wedding. I went up again in January for my Wedding. I did not go to the site. You see, the terrorists didn't knock down American Capitalism. They destroyed a great building with great people and great dreams. The terrorists didn't vie Americans against Americans. They united us in a common cause, FREEDOM...COURAGE...and HELPING EACH OTHER. I know people don't want to rebuild on the ground were a lot of people died. I had a friend die that day as well. But I say, rebuild it. Rebuild it taller, stronger and make it as magnificent as it once was. Build a memorial site right off the water close to the shore. Make it a tall structure inscribed with all the names of the lost souls and heros of the buildings in NY, the Pentagon and the flights. But rebuild those towers...and let the next generation have a chance to experience all the memories and feelings I had as a young girl in such a Wonderland. Tell us your story: Following is the e-mail message that I sent to my family and friends at 5:56 PM on September 11th: Hi , This morning (September 11, 2001) was a close one. My morning train was 15 minutes late this morning. Otherwise I would have been in the thick of what happened at the World Trade Center this morning. My normal daily schedule is to catch the 8:13 AM train to Hoboken. We arrive at the station around 9:00 AM. I either take a NYC Ferry or what we call the PATH train to the World Train Center. If timing is right, I'm in the World Trade Center around 9:10 AM. By the time I walk through the lower level to the upper level, I reach the outer doors around 9:15 AM. Needless to say, as you've been listening to the news, this is when the terrorist attack was taking place and the first tower was collapsing around 9:13 AM. As we were approaching the Hoboken station, around 9:00 AM, several on the train had heard the news via friends who called them on their cell phones about the WTC towers. Many already were looking out the train windows. When I saw several people looking out the window I asked what was happening, and was jolted with the news that two planes had hit the towers. As we got off the train, we were all thinking that we would be able to catch either the PATH or a NYC Ferry over to Manhattan. I think I walked about 100 feet when the announcement came, "All transportation into Manhattan has been suspended. Please listen, as we are arranging a new train schedule and will get you back to your home destinations as quickly as it is possible." Fortunately the train was announced at 10:25 AM. We sat and waited until the train was pretty full. We left at 11:00 AM. As we pulled out of the station, we could see the tremendous flames and smoke of the fire. The train passengers went silent as we watched the billowing smoke. Someone's cell phone rang. Someone then said outload, both towers are gone. As we looked, we were unable to see the towers, and yet someone behind me said, "That can't be true, I can still see them. The smoke is just hiding them." Yet it was obvious, the towers were not there! It's amazing. The normal daily ride into Hoboken is usually comfortably quiet. Most riders are reading their morning newspapers or books. A few chat with friends they've made over the years of riding trains together. As we sat waiting for the train to return back to the stations we came from earlier, conversations quickly emerged. Two men were sitting in front of me. Both were in buildings immediately next to the WTC towers. One was in an elevator when the first plane struck the tower. He went back downstairs to see what was happening. As he walked out the door the second plane hit. He said that he didn't even think twice to go back to his office. He spoke of how he ran along the battery area and headed for the Ferry area. He said that he was ready to jump into the water if he had to jump to safety. Most of us had cell phones, but were unable to reach those we wanted to call. Every so often someone's cell would ring, and a bit of news would be shared with those who were around the caller. We still haven't been able to locate one of our staff members who normally is going through the WTC at that time. I often meet her on the PATH train and walk to work with her. It is possible that she could be speaking somewhere. Hopefully she is safe somewhere! Please keep Marie in your prayer. (Marie was home preparing to leave for Providence, RI for a speaking engagement when the attack was happening.) I'm safe, but a little unnerved this evening. As I watch the news reports I am more aware that it was the stroke of a late train that kept me from being in the middle of this awful event earlier today. I remember it every day of my life because I have two daughters, out in the world, whose safety I think about constantly. After catching bits of the predictable so-called news reports of memorials around the country, all day long, I tuned out. By the end of the day, a plane heading for the Albany airport, in a way that appeared to be perilously low, brought tears to my tired eyes. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I woke up the morning of September 11, and something just told me to turn on the Television. I never got up in the morning and turned on the TV, I usually read or meditated. During this time, I was 8 months pregnant with my daughter, and also helping one of my friends cope with her brother joining the Army and being deployed to England for three years. I turned on the television, and the first image I saw was the plane flying into the side of the WTC. I couldn't believe it. My hands immediately sheltered my unborn child and I immediately fell to my knees and began to pray for the obvious casualties that this had incurred. My eyes stayed glued to the television. I had to go to work that day, and I knew that it was for the best, I needed to be around people who loved and cared about me. We all stood in silence as the towers fell, and a coworker and I got down on our knees in the middle of the office and prayed for the ones who were lost and also that God would allow some to live and be found in the rubble. The next few days were very hard for me. I went into preterm labor due to the stress of the event. I was put on bedrest, and during that time the only thing for me to do was sit at home and watch the events unfold on the television. Ever since that day, I pray every morning and night for the souls of the lost, and for our President. I plan on sharing this story with my daughter someday, and hope she holds the same reverance for those people who I never knew, but hold so dear in my heart. When I walked in something didn't seem right. some of The women had there hands to there mouths and they were standing by a radio. One woman asked me if I heard what happen. I said no. She said a plane just hit the Twin Towers. At that point I thought it was just an accident and I grabbed my orders and went back out into the warehouse. I turned on my radio and I was going through my orders and then they said another plane had just hit the other tower. I stopt everything I was doing as they said we were being attacked. The first thing that came to my mind was my wife Barbara, was she safe, was my house next, was my kids schools going to be next. I called home from my cell phone and it was just dead air, I couldn't get through, I called and called. I didn't now at the time that all the cell phones around here went dead. Do I leave work now and go home or just keep on trying, I tried again and the phone rang. I'm saying to myself please pick up. My wife answered, hello. I said, are you allright! She said, yeah, why? I said were being attacked. She said, what? I said were being attacked, they rammed two planes into the Twin Towers. I said turn on the TV. She said O my god. so we were talking for awile and then the news said they just hit the Pentagon. Tears filled my eyes, I was scared, yet happy I was talking to my wife. little did I know, others weren't so lucky. We proceeded to setup a TV to see the news. Thinking this was an accident, we are all in shock. Short period later we see a plane crash into the other tower. Now we know this is no accident. Then it continues, the Pentagon attack, the Pennsylvania crash, the towers collapse, the number of dead, 20,000, 30,000, 40,000 or more people could of been killed. Shock sets in. I was collecting on cell phone accounts and calling New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and DC. As some of us were waiting for the calls to go threw a guy sitting across the isle from me said that a lady had just told him that a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center. He thought the lady was joking until one of the other girls said that someone had just told her that too. Alot of us started to get worried, about that time our supervisor came out and said that another plane had just crashed into the towers. During this time we were still trying to make calls to the city and the surrounding areas with no luck. That is when our managers decided that it was time to shut down the dialing system. We were sent to break early and I went online to see if I could fine anything out. I remember it took a really long time to get online but when I finally did I saw pictures that scared me. During our break the Pentagon was hit and when we came back from break we were told to go down to the main floor to meet with our managers. By the time we got down there they were telling everybody to leave, we were in an office building, 21 stories tall and less than a half a mile from the Lehigh Valley International Airport. I remember that that 40 min. ride home seemed like it took forever and when I drove by the airport it was completely still. It was erie. On my way home the first tower collapsed and I was glued to the tv when the second one came down. I have not worked in an office building since then. All I have to say to end this is that I hope I nobody has to go threw that again. I was sitting in class doing my work, when another teacher informed us that a plane had just hit one of the twin towers. So our teacher turned on the television, it finally came to the students that America was under attack by a bunch of ruthless cowards. Then we saw the second plane hit the remaining tower. A whole bunch of emotions flew over the rest of class and I. It was the day after my fourteenth birthday and I was in complete shock. Everything and everyone came to a complete stop. I think that something like that would never in a million years happen to a country like the United States of America. This attack on our great country should have never happened but it did. This type of stuff happens to other countries, which always have problems about their government or something in that sort of nature. I got my things and left the school with my mom. When I was home, the event was on television and they were explaining what had just happened to the U.S. So I finally sat down and relaxed and thought to myself how many people lost loved ones while in the building and how many people were lucky to come out of the buildings before they came crashing down. I my mind I just wanted to find who was responsible for the attack turn them in and watch them get what they had coming. Later on that night, my family and I went to church and we gather around to pray for those who lost their lives. We also prayed for those who still weren?t sure that they had loved ones inside the building or not. It just shows how creepy and horrifying that day was for people who were in the city of New York. So after listening to our pastor talk about what had just happened to our country, we all went home to sit down and relax and think about the whole day in general. We watched some television and then went to bed. It will be a day that cannot and will never be forgotten for years and years to come for those people who lost their lives in the World Trade center. He had put the radio on after going into the bathroom, about one of the towers being hit. I instantly put the news on, to see pictures of the crash. I went downstairs and flicked through all the channels, not just the news channels. MTV, heck even Disney was showing stuff. And then, I watched TV for many hours. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I will never forget the fear, the hurt, the anger, the shock I felt during the entire day. I watched those news reels in horror and disbelief. I didn't personally know any of those whose lives were taken that day but they were Americans and therefore my brothers and sisters. I can only imagine how their friends, families and co-workers felt and must still feel to this day. My heart went out to them then and still aches for them now. I am proud of the resolve of our nation and it's president that we would not and did not let this attack go unanswered. For all the hurt, I was so proud to be an American that day and in the days following. If anything good can be said to have come from the ordeal it is that I have been better able to put into perspective what truly matters and what is important. My most treasured gift, my little girl, became even more precious to me that day because I was reminded of how quickly things change. I never did, but especially now never will, let an opportunity to hug or kiss her or tell her I love her pass me by. We ARE a nation under God, indivisible, with liberty for all and for that I am so grateful and so proud. We proved that day that united we stand! I was trying to get the mail out when it came over the radio about the first plane. I thought how could a pilot hit the WTC on such a clear day. We all went to the swing room to check out the TV. There it was the second plane striking. For the first time I did not feel safe in my own country. After the devastation, I was happy I did not know one person who was killed. I began to feel bad because like it or not those were my fellow countrymen who rode on the bus or train that I do every morning. I felt empty all of these emotions. So in days to come I read the poem Footprints. It made me feel better. When I see it on the news the stories, the devastation I change the channel. In order to heal I must move on but I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT FOR ONE MOMENT I WAS NOT SAFE. We are strong we will move on. One day at a time. It may feel as if we can't, but we must for our children. I have a dream since I was a little kid to go to US, and mostly visit NYC and just the World Trade Center. I am so yeah I dont know how I feel but mostly sad. For all theese people. And their familys. Who hade someone who was hurt or killed in the terror attack. The big houses just dissapeard so easely... and so many lifes just gone. The twin Towers was a symbol of the great american pride for me. Now their gone....and the big huge dust cloude reaching for the sky..... I was sitting home and my bf was calling me and sade: U have to watch TV NOW! The World Trade Center is damaged.. I turned on BBC World and CNN and saw the destruction... so horrible. And the suddenly it collapsed... I just sat there and did nothing. And fellt thata I wanted to help. But how would it look like if I catching a plane to go to NYC and help? I was so helpless.... felted so bad. My tears was falling down and yeah it was a horrible feeling. I cant describe it. And for the one who did this? I cant understand how a person could do such a bad thing to the great nation in the east......Just cant understand that. When I turned on the tv I was in shock with what I saw. I was born in Pennsylvania and could not believe what happened there and in New York and Washington. That day i was glued to the television watching everything. My stepchildren were getting ready for school and explained to them what happened. My other half was going to work and kept calling to see the latest update. That day is a day that will never be forgotten in my mind. That was a horrible day. People lost there lives and they will never be forgotten. That day I held my family close. Tell us your story: After dropping my children off at school, I had to go by a Printing business to pick up completed jerseys for my son's football team. I was talking to the owner and a neighbor of mine that works next door. The radio was on, and we all heard about the first plane. I didn't think anything more than it was an accident and I remember thinking, "What a shame..." I got in my car and started driving to work. I was listening to my favorite morning show which immediately started talking about the plane crash and then the second plane. I hurried on to work so that I could watch the television. After the third plane crash, all I wanted to do was go get my children from school. I started praying. I started calling my husband(who was out of town on business in MexicO) and I told him I loved him and to hurry home. We couldn't function much at work the rest of the day, just prayed. I prayed that if the end of the world was coming, that my children would not die without me. The feeling was helpless, hopeless, and extreme sadness. My 7 year old son, who never watches anything but cartoons, wouldn't quit watching CNN. He was shocked and couldn't sleep. My 12 year old daughter hid in her room and said she wished the world would be normal again and that she didn't want to hear about it anymore...she wanted normalcy. Money problems didn't seem so bad, just trivial(along with other worries in life). I am truly thankful nobody in my family was hurt, but the world does mourn...we were ALL directly involved. We had to got to the library to cheak out books for the grade requirments.Than our librarian statred to tell us we were going into war we had been attacked! Tell us your story: I'll never forget the phone call I got at 7 in the morning from my friend, telling me to wake up and turn on the news, we were being bombed. I didn't understand and she had to repeat herself several times before I was convinced that it wasn't a dream. I soon learned that we weren't being bombed but we were being attacked in our own buildings with our own planes. I quickly changed and drove over to her house so I wouldn't be alone. We spent the morning and afternoon fixated on the TV watching the horrific events of that morning being shown over and over. We sat in shock and spoke very little except to say "I can't believe this is happening". While the events took place far from us; we still felt vulnerable. If this could happen there, it could happen anywhere. For the first time I felt like our country wasn't safe. I called as many loved ones as I could to tell them I love them and make sure they were ok. The days after the attacks all blurred together as a mass of sadness and hopelessness. Moments of encouragement were found as my work observed the moment of silence and when the President spoke to our country. Over the next several weeks and months my feelings of patriotism and love for my country and my president were stronger than they had ever been. I was ashamed to be around people who had anything negative to say about it and everytime pictures of the attacks would be replayed at work or at a friends house, I would hold back tears. I don't know why this event effected my life so profoundly. It happened across the continent but it felt like it happened right next door. I didn't lose a brother or sister, my father or mother; but all I can think of is, I could have. It's been a year today since the attacks and our country and myself have been forever changed. We can no longer lie to ourselves that we in America are untouchable or indestructable. It's the coming of age of our country. We can no longer be innocents letting devastation effect the rest of the world but not us. We have been forced into growing up as a country and hopefully growing together. It is a sad thing that it took so much tragedy to join our nation together. On this first anniversary, as we all look for ways to honor the memories of those who lost their lives to terrorism I wonder how many will be successful. The only way I think we can hope to honor them is to learn from what has happened. We are a nation that is strong and powerful, but most of all, we need to be a country that is united. When we stand together as a people, embracing our differences, loving our neighbors, and respecting our freedoms; it is only then that we truly show the world we are a great nation. I hope we WILL let terrorism change our lives. That what they intended to hurt us will only make us stronger and those who lost their lives, did so to make sure we never forget how lucky we really are. I was in my second period class and my teacher was absent so we had a diffrent teacher she told us that she herd on the radio that the Wolrd Trade Center was hit by two aircrafts. During Lunch I went to the security desk and they had the radio on and I herd that the World Trade Center was hit by two plains. After that I decided to walk around the ground floor and seen a Televison on but it was a spanish channel and it was on mute I couldn't understand what they were saying then they showed the footage of the smoke from the World Trade Center. I walked to the front door and seen students leaving with there parents because they were worried. After lunch they told us to all go to the office if we lived in a certin area of Queens. So I went to the office and they told us that we had to walk home with all the people that lived close to where I live and we all walked home. I got home and looked out my window and saw smoke by the World Trade Center once stood. About a half hour later my mom came home and hung out till my dad got home. We were worried about how he would get home then we found out when he got home he walked over the 59th Street bridge. We watched televsion and saw tower seven colapse right before our eyes. Two hous later I went to bed and so did my parents. This day is a day that will live in infamy just like Pearl Harbor.
