Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at work and one of my coworkers was listening to the radio and heard the report of the first plan hitting. We all ran to the breakroom and turned the TV on just in time to see the replays and watch as the second plane hit. Then we heard a 3rd plane had hit the Pentagon. My boss was at a business meeting just a few blocks from the Pentagon so we spent many anxious hours until he called to let us know he was alright. One of our coworkers had a daughter who worked near the WTC. It made a tremendous impact on all of us and made both New York and Washington seem so much closer. Being near to Fort Bragg made it even more surreal as we kept hearing the jets and helicopters passing overhead. We spent the remainder of the day trying to work but drawn to the TV to watch it unfolding. Just today the hospital had a memorial service on the front lawn. As we all stood watching the maintenance crews display an enormous flag from the roof of the building that fell over 5 floors. It was hard to believe a full year had gone by and I think everyone in the crowd ran the full gammet of emotions from disbelief to rage to alnost overwhelming sorrow. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Terrible Twosome By, Jessica Chrysafides On September 11th, 2001 I was sitting in my Earth Science class with my teacher Miss. Kersch when a boy in our class named Ricky walked in and said, "A plane just hit the World Trade Centers in New York City!" My teacher Miss. Kersch turned on the television to CNN and we watched it for the rest of that class period. In my Earth Science class, we all saw was a plane crashing into one of the World Trade Center buildings. As the whole world was concentrating on the World Trade Centers another plane hit the Pentagon. Then all of the sudden out of nowhere, the south tower of the Trade Center collapsed. A few seconds later, the north tower collapsed. After all this happened, the wall on the Pentagon collapsed. That day I was really sad because my cousin works in the United States Treasury at the Pentagon. That day she was supposed to work in the same place where the plane hit the Pentagon. Luckily that day she was rescheduled to work in a camp in Washington D.C. away from where the Pentagon was. Another thing I saw on the television was a family. A wife, daughter, and sister were looking for a man. They searched all over for him. They kept going back and forth past the where the World Trade Centers stood. All of a sudden, the daughter screamed, "DADDY!" and she sprinted over to him and gave him a huge hug. I thought it was heroic for all the man and women who went to New York City to help with the clean up. It was also sad because they had to leave their families for days, weeks, maybe even months. I will always be praying for those families who have lost loved ones and friends. I will always remember that significant day on which the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon was attacked! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was actually online at about 8:50 a.m., in a women's chat room. People were talking about a plane having crashed into the WTC. The radio was on in the background (The Tom Joyner show). Everyone was talking as if it had been a small, recreational plane that had had an accident. Then people online started talking about a 757. I thought they were crazy and I went to another women's chat room. But the same dialogue was happening there. I turned on the television and saw what was going on. But the screen went to snow after a few minutes b/c I did not have cable. My reception was coming from the antenna on top of the WTC. That's when I got scared. I went back online and asked if anyone knew of an all-news AM station in NYC. I grew up here and have lived here most of my life. But I was so scared at that point that I couldn't even remember 1010 WINS or something else that I had heard all my life. A few minutes later I ran outside and talked to my neighbor on the street. He's an older man and he's so sweet to me. He hugs me and gives me a kiss on the cheek every day. He confirmed that everything I had heard on TV and the radio was true. Somehow his confirmation made it all real. My other neighbors pulled up in front of the house next door just as I was returning home. They had been downtown and had made it out by car just in time. He had just offered to drive her to work that day--out of the blue. The second plane hit a minute or two after she got out of the car. She just jumped back in and they made it over the bridge and back home to Harlem. I watched it all on TV with them as the towers fell. I'll never forget those moments as long as I live. I couldn't stop thinking "What about the people? All those people..." i was in shock. I didn't even know until days later that two people I knew had not made it out of Tower 1. I still think about the people and their families often. I lost my parents when I was younger. So my heart aches for them. I hope they find peace. It's possible, but it takes a long, long time. My Government class, PAF101 was where I heard the horrible news that would shape the rest of my day and the rest of my life. The bell had rang to start class at 9:35 AM, just as it had before, and nothing felt out of the ordinary. I had no idea that less than 200 miles from me, the world's strongest symbols of hope and prosperity were aflame. My teacher came storming into the room, like she never had done before. we had only been in school the better part of two weeks, but I knew that even a new, nervous teacher shouldn't have been behaving so erraticly. She had always told us she liked playing practical jokes, so it came as no surprise and actually brought a smile to my face when I heard "Two planes just crashed into the World Trade center in New York." Students laughed. One student actually stood up and told her she was full of it. Until we turned the TV on. There they were, the two most beautiful buildings on the East Coast, pouring smoke into the warm morning air. Pens dropped, skidding chairs halted. The laughter stopped. Tears began to streak across even the strongest of faces as we watched, in utter horror, as Tower 2 of WTC collapsed, on live televison. Cursing, crying, and remarks about Arabs were being thrown like rapid-fire dodgeballs inthe gym class I had just come from as the pillar of smoke that had once been one of the Twins spread over the city. My teacher left the room to recover the tape of the attacks before the administration could lay their paws on it. She came back in seconds later: "The Pentagon has been hit," she told us. That did it for many. If they hadn't been scared out of their minds, they were then. Waiting for a plane to drop onto us, we watched the fuzzy television closely, staring at the lonely brother against New York's smoky skyline. It was about that time the deans came into the rooms and announced all taping of the gut wrenching event would be destroyed and teachers doing so or harboring those who did so would be reprimanded. It didnt make any sense to me. People were dying, many of which were friends, colleagues, and FAMILY members of those who were at my School, and all they could think about was what we were being subjected to? We were getting a sour taste of life. Our teacher locked the door and turned the TV up, allowing students shunned in other areas to come and watch the day unfold. The bell rang. Nobody moved. A teacher (my other teacher, it so happened) was seen running across the parking lot of the school, hysterical beyond belief. Her future son-in-law, fiancee to her daughter, worked in the World Trade Center. I watched out the window as teachers pulled her, screaming, back into the building. The day slowly, ever so slowly, moved on. I only had a half day (I didnt take a full day of classes since most of mine were college courses) and was on my way home shortly after noon. I turned the radio on in my car, and of course, any channel I turned to was the same: "WTC collapses, thousands dead." The TV that night was the same, non-stop coverage. I saw the planes hit, again and again, knowing full well that the reprocussions were serious. Off I went to work for 6 o clock at a local drugstore. I had my first three customers say absolutely nothing at all, even seeming rather pleasant. I began to wonder if I had experienced it, yet the rest of the world hadn't. Until I had one customer drop his money due to the shivers he was having. "I'm just shook up at what happened this morning," he said honestly, cradling his child in his other arm, holding her tight as not to let her become part of the world's insanity. It was the first night my manager had ever allowed the TV to be turned on in the breakroom. We all watched, again and again, as the horrors of September 11th unfolded in front of our eyes, burning into our brains and leaving scars time could never heal. Tell us your story: I had lived for six years in the shadow of the Trade Center - there frequently to take visitors to the roof observatory or to use the Path trains underground. My apartment faced the WTC, and it was usually the first thing I saw in the morning. The sun would often turn it all manner of stunning color. I used it as a frame of reference no matter what part of the city I was in. It was the one thing you could see from everywhere to help you get your bearings in such a huge metropolis. On the morning of September 11, 2001, I drove to work as usual. As I was pulling into my office's garage in Kansas City the DJ on the radio mentioned that a plane had just struck One World Trade Center. At the time, I was visualizing a small passenger plane of some sort. But I ran up to my office and turned on the television to see the black smoke billowing high. I was watching live as the second plane hit, and then as each tower fell. The surreal scene immediately caused me to close my eyes in anguish. I called my mother and cried for all of the people I knew were there - probably many of the same people I had watched go to work over there during my years in the city, wondering if any of my friends happened to be there for some reason. I started e-mailing my best friend in Brooklyn Heights who had been watching the entire thing first hand, seeing people jump to their deaths and the horrible impact of the planes. We consoled each other via e-mail for a couple of hours, trying to make ourselves believe that things would be okay. The day was so unsure - there was no way to feel safe. Even buildings in Kansas City were being evacuated ... no one knew what was going on or what would happen next. For weeks I listened to the news constantly - wondering when and where the next strike would occur. Having this day roll back on the calendar brings back my tears and my feelings for this time last year. This world is a mess, and I pray that God bring civility and sanity to it. Tell us your story: On September 11th i was on my way to school, my mom was driving me to school and i heard on the radio that a plane crashed into the World Trade Center. At first my mom and I thought it was on accident but then when I was at school everyone started to tell my teacher about what happened.They heard that another plane had crashed into the the other Tower a little bit after the first one crashed. After the second plane hit we knew that it wasn't on accident anymore. Nobody knew what was going on everyone was scared that something was going to happen to the Sears Tower in Downtown because the Sears tower was one of the biggest towers in America. Some kids were really upset because they had parents that worked there. Then we heard about the plane that crashed into the Pentagon luckily many people didn't die from that attck. But when everyone heard about it,parents starting taking their kids home from school because they were scared. Finally it was the end of school and everyone went home. SOme of my friends came over adn we watched the news to find more about the attacks and see if anything else had happened. They showed on T.v when the second plane hit the Tower and they showed the poeople running away screaming. It was just a terrible thing to watch. My mom was downstairs crying and trying to reach my sister to see if she was ok because at the time of the attack she had been living in around the New York City area and she didn't know if she was working around there. The people had discovered who was flying the plans and they were Afgan people who they found out were speacially trained to fly plans into the Towers. They had then figured out that they were helping a man named Osama Bin Laden. Everyone was so upset and angry at Bin Laden for killing all their relatives and so many people. The president had sent many military poeple to look for Osama Bin Laden. It was a really bad thing. Now it is a year later and they are still looking for him. Hopefully they find him before he makes another attack and makes us relive September 11th. Noone will ever forget that day. It will stay in our minds and hearts forever. It hit me later on , how many people this act of terrorism hurt when I was at Arlington national Cemetery last March. My mother is buried in Arlingto. She passed away only 2 years ago and I miss her very much. As I stood at her grave with my personal thoughts, I looked over my left shoulder and saw the reconstuction efforts at the Pentagon nearby. The plane that hit the Pentagon had flown over the grave of my beloved mother, a woman who never hurt anyone and sacrificed much for the love of her country. I realised how so many innocent people were killed or somehow damaged on that day. There is a quote from William Saroyan's play, The Time of Your Life, that should fit how each one of us needs to live our lives: " In the time of your life, live, so that in that good time, you shall not add to the misery an suffering of the world, but shall smile to the infinite delight and mystery of it." We stopped to take a break on their yard when her friend said, " The Trade Center got bombed." At first we didn't believe them because they're known for playing jokes, but we had second thoughts after a few minutes. Tell us your story: A Day We Will Never Forget September 11 2001 was a day that no one will soon forget, as its one year anniversary draws nearer the horrific memories of that tragic day are drugged from the back of every ones minds. I?m getting ahead of myself. I should start at the beginning. As pain full as these memories are they should never be forgotten, as history tends to repeat itself. It started off as a day like any other. People allover the U.S. got up, got dressed and went to work or school. I was among those people. School started of the same as any other day, but by what I'm almost positive was second period it was changed that?s when heard the news of what had happened. She had told me with a blank look, "A plane had hit the word trade center buildings. I don?t remember much else about that conversation except that the fact hadn?t sunk in and I had convinced my self that it must have been a small privet plane that had gotten through off corse and left it as nothing more then that. There was a sort of tension around school roomers that a jet liner had hit the building and that it was an act of terrorism but never for a second did I believe that any of this might be true. It wasn?t until fifth period that I found out the truth. The TV kept replaying the footage of the 1st plane hit, it had been a jetliner, and then another one had hit. Then I began to see people jump from hundreds of feet in the air I was astonished at the sight, how horrible it must have been that people thought the only rational thing to do was to jump to there deaths. When the building fell so did the hopes and dreams of a nation. The aftermath was both good and bad. The country united in the tragedy. People gave thanks to the fact that there were a few survivors, but mean while thousands among thousands of life?s were lost and changed. Flags started appearing on every house and even on cars. There was millions of dollars was donated to the families of the victims and to the victims themselves. I was fortunet that I did not directly no any of the victims, but I did no people who did. People who will never be able to visit a grave and no that the body of there loved one was there. Thousands of people will never in there life have closure. A very close friend of mine when out and joined the army after the fact, and I have never seen him since. I no that if September 11th would have been a day like any other he would still be here. So you can see that September 11th had sum sort of effect on all of us even we don?t know it, because someone we knows life was changed. I hope that we will never forget what happened because I never want anyone to have to suffer as thousands have. So I tell you remember we owe it to the victims, ourselves, and the future generations to make sure that in this instance history doest repeat itself. When Katie announced ansd I saw the video, I thought "My God, thousands of people have just lost their loved ones and don't even know it. When Matt Lauer said "IF it was an accident..." I thought what a horrible accident that someone flew a small plane into the building. My coworkers called me to come to the conference room where they had the TV on and we watched as the 2nd plane hit the tower. One of my coworkers and myself held hands and prayed for the people in the buildings. It was a very hard day. I thought it was weird sitting in class learning about history and experiencing it at the same time. Right before the end of the period my teacher turned on the news. This was around 9:34. The bell rang at 9:41 and I proceeded to study hall. Through out the whole day I watched the terrible sites over and over. When I got home my mom asked me if I heard what had happened and then went to work. My little sister got home at four and she was very scared. I must have been zoned out or something because I didn?t hear the sonic boom that my sister heard. Since we live near Wright Patterson Air Force Base airplanes were taking off, two of witch made sonic booms. My sister came running saying someone was bombing us and thing of the sort. Our neighbor made her even more scared by telling her about other things like a fire that was caused by an airplane crash near our house. It was just a fire but my sister believed her. I work at the Dayton International Airport as a busboy at Max and Erma?s Restaurant. I have to go through security every day and I know that I?m safe and that I will be safe if I ever flew anywhere. Some of our patients came into the office and told us that three planes had been hijacked and one was crashed into the Pentagon and the other two into the World Trade Centers. As I stood there listing to the story, another plane had been crashed into Pennsylvania. As a medical professional I wanted to go and do whatever I could. I had a job to do for my patients and my boss. I called my mom, who lives in New Jersey and couldn't get through. I knew the phones lines had to be overloaded with calls with loveones missing and trying to find where they were. Tell us your story: I first heard the news when a radio announcer tell of a plane crashing into the Twin Towers, my hand immediately went to my mouth, horrified in dis-belief. Never in a million years did I suspect that it was a terrorist attach. I arrived at work and announced what I had heard, tears in my eyes, my hands shaking and unable to get the mental picture out of my head. We ran around looking for a televsion to watch, we tried to logon to the news on the Internet, but unable to connect due mast volumes of others trying to do the same around the country. We work at a Outpatient Substance clinic the counselor's all had clients, do we interupt to tell them, do we maintain our professionalism, do we openly mourn? We found comfort in each other and huddled together unsure of what was next for the world. Trying to cope with the visions seen on televisions and listening to the words that were so sureal. Are we at war? Our hearts were breaking as many of us openly weeped for the families and lost lives. I called home to talked to my husband and tell him of what was going on and how scared I was.He turned on the television and watched,captivated by the events,unable to turn it off, as so many others have conveyed. felt the incredible urge to call up my family located in California, Hawaii, Arizona, and of course right here in town, I wanted to make sure everyone was alright and to tell them in my own way, that I loved them. I still get teary eyed when the mention of 9/11 comes up. I have often wondered if the the rest of the country felt as strongly as we do. I now know they do, we traveled to California this summer and visited with family who had lived on Long Island until 9 years ago. There friends and everyone we talked with seem to bring it up when they found out we were from New York. They feels the affects, everyone knew someone who knew someone or was related to someone. What wide spread destruction this act of terrorism took on. We can not tolerate this and must stand united. The Giants had played the Broncos the night before, and my cousins and me went out and watched the game at a bar. I work at Dow Jones, on the newswire, in an office in Jersey City, N.J., that is directly across the Hudson River from the twins towers. I was hoarse, and tired, and two editors were on vacation; it was just me and Sharon. I don't know what time the phone rang, it was my sister, who also lives in Jersey City, down on the waterfront. "Go to the window," she said. "Jeanne-Michele, I got work to do, what? Why?" "Because the Trade Center's on fire!" she yelled. She had heard the first plane strike, then ran to her back window. She watched everything from there. I went over to the window, and saw the smoke coming from the first tower. A bunch of us were standing there, looking out. I don't remember exactly what it was, but I made some joke about the idiot who couldn't fly a plane. I remember at the time thinking it was pretty clever. I was back at my desk when the second plane hit. It was weird, my friend Sam was over, and we were watching it on TV, even though we could look across the river. There was one girl standing by the window, and she screamed so loud the whole newsroom heard it because she saw the second plane coming, and Sam and I saw the explosion on TV and heard it from outside. I can't explain how surreal that was. People started screaming; we all knew then what was really going on. I remember hearing somebody screaming Oh, my God, Oh, my God; strangely enough, a friend told me the other day that he heard me screaming that. I'm sure a lot of us were. We tried to keep working, but it was madness, people were genuinely terrified, and the newsroom was totally chaotic. We stuck around for a while, filing headlines to the wire, trying to write whatever we could. Months later, Sharon said she heard from a reporter at the New York Times that Dow Jones had printed the first headlines on the attack. Sharon said, God, I wonder who took the headlines? I said to her, you did. Our boss, Paul Ingrassia, was on the ground, saw the plane hit, and phoned in headlines on his cellphone. Sharon had totally forgotten it. She broke the news to the world. There was a headline on my screen, "One Tower collapses," or something like that. I remember changing it to "One of Two Twin Towers Collapses." For some bizarre reason I felt it necessary to point out that there were two towers; totally redundant. I hit the button on that headline, and then my bosses came through the newsroom, yelling "get out, go, get out, leave everything, go, get out of your seat and go." When that first tower collapsed, we could see it and hear it and feel it; it shook my building, across the river. To me it sounded like trees snapping, that building collapsing. Outside was total bedlam. People were running in every direction; nobody knew if more planes were up there. The police were screaming at people to walk away from the river. "Just go," they said, "go that way." and they'd point inland. I ran around the block, to a street that ended at the river, right across from the Trade Center, a view I'd never, ever gotten tired of. Every day I saw those buildings and that skyline, and every day it just amazed me. I used to think of those buildings as modern Pyramids, and it always seemed to me that the whole financial center, with its glass atrium, was like the entranceway to the modern Rome, to the new world capital. I guess I wasn't the only one who felt that way. I snuck into Liberty State Park after we left the office. It's a large open field on the river right behing Ellis Island and the Statue of Libery. As I was walking in, there was a constant stream of people covered in soot walking out; people were evacuated to the park. All sorts of emergency crews were coming screaming in. The park has this great view of the city and of course the statue and all that. A lot of pictures you see with the skyline and the statue are taken there. And what we saw that day, all day, and for the next two weeks or so, was the city in smoke. I just couldn't get over how it wouldn't stop burning. So anyhow I started going up to anybody in a uniform and asking if I could do anything. I was told no a few times. They were still bringing people over from the city. This one boat landed at the pier and these people rushed by me with a stretcher and on the stretcher was a fireman, burned badly and not moving. Not an inch. And I remember I looked at his hand, laid across his stomach, and I don't want this at all to sound callous, but it looked like a slab of meat, dead the way a slab of meat looks. Somebody was screaming into a walkie-talkie for I can't remember what, so I think maybe he wasn't dead but I don't know and I never found out. There was another fireman behind him, and he came off the boat and he was kicking the rail, furious, yelling in just pain and frustration. So finally I said to somebody, look, I'm an American, I want to do something. I told him I'd do anything, anything. They let me stay for five or six hours, there were about eight of us that were in the park, civilians, while they set up a triage for the victims they thought they were going to get. I lugged ice and cots and first aid kits and blankets and got firemen and EMTs drinks and I can't remember what else I did, and the whole time we had this view, this spectacular view, I mean people come from all over the world for this view. I'm in the park all the time and I hear different languages constantly. And we just watched it burn. The smoke had to be as high as the towers were. It wouldn't stop burning, and the smoke trailed south as far as we could see. Finally they kicked us out, they said look thanks but we don't know who you are and they're gonna start bringing people over here and it's going to be bad. So we left. But they never brought anybody over to the park. I guess the New York hospitals never got to overflowing. Everybody either got out or died. So for a few days people were dropping supplies off in Jersey City and they'd get ferried them across the river. I was down at the waterfront, loading boats, and also storing supplies in the warehouses. I mean we got eighteen-wheeler after eighteen-wheeler, trucks from all over the country. We couldn't store it all. And there were tons of people around, from all over the state, there was a father who brought his daughter along, there was a marine, there was me, there was tons of people and everybody worked hard and didn't complain about a damn thing and worked until they had to tell us to go home. I was never prouder in my life to be an American than then. I woke up for work the next morning, we went back the next day, and at first I didn't remember it. I swear I didn't, I was only half-awake and for a minute I forgot about the whole thing. Then I heard the radio, and they were talking about it, and I remembered everything, and I curled up into a ball in my bed and screamed and howled and cried uncontrollably for I don't know how long. What strikes me the most now is the futility of it all. Did those guys do what they thought they were going to do? Did they achieve any goals? They didn't bring about the end of days, or even the end of America. All they did was kill 3,000 totally innocent people and insure that they were going to get all their comrades killed. The whole thing is such a waste of life and I can't understand how they couldn't care about that and just selfishly and madly did it anyway.
