I was running a little late for work and my son was grumpy because he didn't want to go to school. I was singing along with a country station that I had tuned into my radio. All of a sudden there was a break in the broadcast. They started to say that one of the twin towers had just had a plane crash into it. I turned off my car after I had parked in the lot of my workplace, a daycare. I walked in to see shock on everyone's faces. Noone knew what was going on. Everyone had all of their radios in their rooms on and all of the t.v. sets tuned into the news. My assistant worker came in and said that another tower had been hit. I was in awe. Soon thereafter we heard of the planecrash in Philly. I remember walking trough a room that had a t.v.(mine didn't)and seeing the two burning towers and then moments later as they crushed into infamous rubble. Tears were sworming down my face like angry ants marching. I felt so saddened, all I could keep thinking about was the people and their families. Then my thoughts shifted to my husband, whom I had left in Germany, an American soldier. I had come home with the intent of divorce, but realized that I truly loved him when I felt he was at danger of being sent somewhere to fight with a risk of not comming home. The first thing that I did when I got home was e-mail him and tell him that I loved him. And that I just wanted him to know that. Now, one year later, I continuously feel the outrage toward the people that did this to my country, and am still pending divorce(apparantly he still doesn't feel the same way about me) and am searching for a feeling of safety and peace, which I have yet to find. Tell us your story: 911 On September 11, 2001, the day New York City and Washington D.C. got attacked; I was in Earth Science talking to my friends Jennifer Upton and April Ames. My teacher turned on the television What I saw on television surprised me. I could not believe my eyes; the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were on fire. It was the most tragic thing I have ever seen. When the Twin Towers were on fire, I thought, "This cannot be happening!" Then two seconds later, I saw another plane crash into the other tower. Next thing I knew, they both collapsed on the ground. I felt sick to my stomach. I think this event will change our lives forever. First of all, the United States is never going to be the same again. The World Trade Center is gone and thousands of people loss their lives. Second, people will not feel safe in a tall building like that one. They will always wonder if there will be a plane waiting to crash into it. It was a really emotional time for people. It was an emotional time for all Americans. Is some place else going to be hit? Are we in a war? Who are we fighting? What about the security? Would we ever feel safe again? How could a person ever do this? When is this going to end? I feel nervous going to big cities. I don't know if I will ever be safe again. Or even ride in an airplane again. I feel really sad for those people who had to go through that torture from the terrorists. I also feel bad for the people who died trying to help the people who were stuck in the building. My heart goes out to all those who lost loved ones. Tell us your story: i was sitting in my chemestry class and ms. teachy was trying to go over the scientific method when Mr. Scott (head of security at our high school) came on the announcements and said "shurley you all know what going on by now just stay in your classes and stay clear of the windows,". We where all confused because we did not know what was going on so we had a student go to the clas next door and ask. she came back 30 seconds later saying someone had bombed the pentagon. Ms. teachey looked confused and ran over and turned on the tv. what i saw scared me. it was the 1st twin tower with smoke coming out of it and they were saying a plane had crashed into it. then about 2 mins after we turned the tv on the second plane came in. so at this point we all knew it was no accident and all of us were expecting more. then they said that a bomb had gone off in front of the executive building in front of the white house (that is where my mom works) i then fel;t horrified but soon comforted as i learded the roports were false. In another half hour we were dissmised and i went to lunch. i was talking to my friends and i was look ing at the people around me, some were confused others worried some were paranoid others did not show any type of emotion. as it turns out i only knew one person that was injured in the pentagon(our school is 15 mins away from the pentagon alot of the parents worked their) and i had not seen her in months. although i was relativley non affected i was shaked that night i prayed for the victims and thier families of the attacks and the country. i really did not know what else to do. the next dy i wanted to donate blood but found out you had to be 18(i was 15).i think that now one year later i am satisfied with what the government has done against osama and the talaban. I hope that from this the country will better learn to defend its self so nothing this horrible will ever happen again. Tell us your story: Started off as any other day...woke up in the morning early, got ready for school and i was already sitting in my second period class. It was the beginning of the year so the classes weren't that hard yet and everyone was still in the process of getting to know each other. As we started off with class an announcement came over the PA system. The principal told everyone to stay where they were and that he would tell us what is happening shortly. So everyone was sitting there very confused for about 10 minutes trying to figure out what is happening. The principal comes back on...and announces tht an airplane has hit one of the twin towers and they are not sure what is happening. We were allowed to turn on the new and watch what was going on. At the time no one knew anything and everything was running through my head and i could not figure out what could possibly be happening. We were watching the news the whole day till we had to go home because we were told to stay in the classrooms until the buses arrived at the regular time. After the schoolday as i got home, mny parents were not there. My stepdad worker at American University at the time, which he had a hard time getting home. My mother worker at a elementary school in McLane which also took her awhile to get home. Once my parents were home i felt safe and happy that nothing has happened to them. But then i was thinking to myself...what are the terrorists going to do next...atomic bomb? fly more planes into buildings? suicide bombers? There were many questions left unanswered and until today people still wonder what we could have done to change things or what else may happen in the future...i guess we will have to wait and find out... I had no idea that our country was under attack. I was headed to school not knowing what was coming in the next few hours. I was sitting in Biology class when it was near ending. A parent of another student came in and said that they were picking up their child due to the troubled times that America was under. None of us had any idea that we were under attack. One of the schools here in Pueblo had gotten a bomb threat. As I returned back to my home school. I had no idea what was happening on the other side of our country. When I got home that day I found out what had happened. What I saw on the television was horrifying. I had no idea who had done any of this. I was scared. I had to go and get some dance shoes and while on the way home the Pentagon was hit. I had no idea that this would be the worst day of our lives as Amercains. What had happened shocked me to death. I had no idea then what had ahppened. Intil I started watching the news. I saw over and over agian the planes crashing into the building. I could see the people jumping and I began to cry. I thought about all the women that had lost their husbands, all the men who lost their eives, all the children who had lost a mom or dad or aunt or uncle or grandma or grandpa. I thought about all the people who had lost a loved one in the world trade center. thousands of peope died. I am thankful that i am alive today. Something like this really makes you thankful for all that you have. I remember getting gas put in all of our cars and truck because people thought that gas prices would go up. It was a really sad day and I will never forget where I was and What I was doing. My prayers are still with all those who lost their families and lives. I give my respect to those who helped on tht day. Those who gave their lives to try and save another's. I still get tery eyed when I think about it. But this is my story of where I was I just thought that I would share it with you. As the news set in, I began to think of my father and godfather, both of whom have government jobs in Washington. I was worried about their safety, and began making phone calls to try to find out where they were and if they were alright. It was hard to get in touch because cell phones weren't working and their buildings had been evacuated. It was a very scary situation. D.C. became a scary place to live. For example, three days later, American recieved a bomb threat and we had to evacuate the entire campus. After that happened, I was so freaked out that I went to visit my boyfriend in Blacksburg, VA for about five days until I was ready to come back. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was on a Hundertwasser bus-boat tour of the city when the first plane struck the World Trade Center. I will never forget it, as long as I live. I had just gotten off the bus and was told to be on the boat by 4PM. I checked my watch, and it was 3:45PM. That was 8:45AM in New York City, the moment the first plane struck the first tower. I felt my late Uncle Felix Taube's spirit, almost as if he was standing right before me, though he'd been long gone, by then. And he said that he knew how to make money, but he wasn't happy, and I'm smart to want to seek enlightenment. I had just gotten off retreat with the venerable Zen master, Thich Nhat Hanh, where I took the five mindfulness trainings, for the first time. They include a commitment not to kill, for one, which I believe is very pertinent. I have since been on retreat again with him, last summer at UCSD, and this year, I've done "trial residencies" no less than three times at two of his practice centers, Deer Park Monastery, in Escondido, and Plum Village, in France. I am planning, tentatively, to return to France for an extended stay, as before, my plans were thwarted by my mother, who just had breast cancer and did not want me to return there. But she and my father are getting used to the idea that I am seeking enlightenment and that this is the way to do it, for me, it seems. I have had other teachers, such as Amma, "the hugging saint of India," and Jennifer Berezan, from the California Institute of Integral Studies' women's spirituality degree programs, but I believe that the practice of mindfulness "speaks to my condition" best right now. By the way, though I was stuck abroad in Vienna, since my flights home via London on Virgin Atlantic and British Airways were canceled on the 14th that September, but I was never "recognized" as a survivor, since I suffered no injury or loss of loved one, and therefore, never compensated. The federal government as vast quantities of money for victims, but since I'm not seen as one, I get none of it, as do the thousands of others like me, no doubt. It is not fair. I was late for class and my shirt needed ironing. I set up the ironing board in my living room and turnded on CNN, as I usually do. A plane had hit the World Trade Center. It was an accident. I put on my shirt, patted the dog on the head, and headed downtown for class. As I pulled out of my driveway an announcer on my radio cut in and said that a second Tower had been hit. Another wrinkle. And I thought like everyone else right then. They are doing this on purpose. Heading into downtown on the Shoreway, a lakeside highway in Cleveland, I saw a low plane approaching from the lake. It was headed towards downtown. And my fingers turned white on the steering wheel as I watched it speed towards me on the highway. Oh my God...Stay Up...Stay Up...Not here, not to me. Of course, it flew over downtown and became one of the many grounded planes to land at Cleveland Hopkins Airport that morning. When I got to class I told my class what had happened, in case they hadn't heard, and then turned to go back to my car to listen to the news. As I turned another student said, "The Trade Center just blew up." I said, "I know, a plane hit it." And she replied, "No. I mean, it's not there anymore. Their saying that it just collapsed." No words. After being evacuated from downtown, I spent the rest of the day like most Americans. My mornings are usually spent carting kids, bookbags in hand, to school or preschool. September mornings in St. Louis are beautiful with their crisp air and blue skies. Back in September of 2001,life in our suburban home wasn't perfect, but it was everything I'd ever hoped for - a family of my own, a kitchen table in a warm sunny room, food on our table, warm beds at night, a garden in the yard - everything was comfortable, safe. Our kitchen was in the middle of renovation with nothing but some wires and pipes and the micorwave cart holding a small television occupying it. The morning of September 11th, I rushed the kids out the door, repeating " We're late, let's go, come on". I quickly dropped them off at school, which is only 2 blocks away, then headed toward the preschool to drop off my youngest and his buddy. As I walked through the doors I noticed alot of moms standing around watching CNN on the large television that hung from the ceiling in the hallway as you enter the building. These are usually broadcasting "Welcome" messages to the visitors and students. After dropping off the boys, I made my way back to the television and said my goodmornings to the other moms. No one answered. I stared up at the television in disbelief. One of the World Trade Center towers was gushing black smoke. My first thought was- what a horrible accident. Then as we stood listening to the updates, we watched the 2nd plane slam through the other tower. Horror swept through my being. This was no accident. My heart was pounding so loud and hard, I was sure everyone could here it - if not for the sounds of their own hearts racing. Tears started trickling down my cheeks as I began to realize what was happening. On television, at that very moment, all around our world, people were watching their loved ones perish. The wives, husbands, children, grandparents who left their homes that morning, never to return. No second chances to say goodbye or I love you. Suddenly, I thought to myself, "did I kiss my husband goodbye this morning?" Why did I rush my children out the door, and did I kiss them before leaving them for the day? As the first tower came crashing down, a sick feeling overwelmed me. What was happening to the America that I loved? We were under attack - on our own soil, by an unknown attacker. The second tower crashed as we stood there holding hands, not wanting to believe what we were watching...hoping to wake up and find it was all a bad dream. The director of the preschool asked if we would like to move into the lunch room and say a prayer for those involved. We stood there around a lunch table, 10 or 11 moms holding hands, tears streaming down our wet faces, hearts heavy with sorrow, praying for everything - the victims, their families, the people of New York, our families, just the strength to carry on with our day. It was as if the sorrow and pain in my heart was so heavy, it was waying us down, physically draining our beings. The rest of the day was spent on a folding chair in my torn up kitchen watching CNN and praying. When I picked up my children later that day, the tears cam again as I hugged and kissed them - to their embarassment - in the middle of the parking lot, no longer taking anything for granted. Remembering that horrific day brings still brings that heavy feeling to my chest and lump to my throat. But I will always remember... If I hadn't been having a radiation treatment at NYU Medical Center, I would have been walking through the World Trade Center at 8:30 AM on September 11th. I live one block north of the Trade Center in Tribeca, and I worked in the World Financial Center across the West Side Highway from the Trade Center. There was a series of escalators and pedestian bridges between my apartment and my office - all part of the World Trade Center complex and a short cut to get to work. My cat was rescued by the ASPCA on Friday, 9/14, but I couldn't return for 3 weeks, and then only to get some clothes. We were evacuated for 8 weeks and when we returned it very surreal. Construction workers, police and firemen everywhere, all the time. Jet fighters overhead day and night. Tourists still ask if we have a public bathroom in our apartment building and re-construction is slowly taking place but the memories are still fresh and painful. Friends and family outside NY can't really imagine what it was like to have such an event take place in my backyard. This is my World War II - an event in my life that changes everything, forever. I was in class with several of my friends, and there was always this man who dressed up very professional. Always wore suits and very business like. That morning we were reviewing for a test and we heard a cell phone ring. The man in the business suit answered and jumped up and began to grab his things. Everyone was looking at him as if he were nuts and all he said was sorry, I have to go, the World Trade Center has just been bombed or something. Of course my friends and I were like whatever, he just wants to get out of class. After class we were walking to our cars and passed the student lounge which usually was empty at that time. The lounge was packed with people, and the t.v. was on full blast. There were students crying, some angry, some concerned, some confused. As for my friends and I we were ashamed and sad. Ashamed we made fun of the man in the business suit, and sad that we felt so helpless to those that needed help the most. Tell us your story: I was sitting my my 7th grade call and the principle can over the intecom and said "there has been a horrible thing happing the TWIN TOWERS have been hit by terroris" I could hear the terror in his voice. At that point in time my teacher started to cry. Not many of the students knew what the twin towers were. I knew what they were. My autnt went there all the time and i was afraid that she was there and i started to cry. Then i rembered that my stepmother has realtives who live innyc and some ever worked in the twin towers. When i went home that day i called her and asked her if she knew if my 2nd aunt was okay. She started to cry and said she doesnt know. about 2 weeks went by and she called and she said that she was alright but only beacuse this one hero who help my aunt. She was runnign through tunnels to get away from the twin towers. This man pick up my aunt everytime she fell. Many questions were asked, very few answers available, and a load of anger and guilt setting in. I then began to think that if it were me who had died from the events on September 11th and I had one last chance to leave a message, I would want everyone to continue on without sorrow and guilt, to live their lives to the fullest and never give up trying. These thoughts inspired me to write a song from the point of view of those who had perished on September 11th. that I would like to share. I was on vacation in Southern Florida, and in the morning of September 11 we (my friend Ulli and me)were on our way to Orlando. Our driver received a call from his wife (she didn't know if he was in New York or wherever) asking if he was Ok. We switched on the radio and heard about a plane having hit WTC. Minutes later there were just screams and finally we could understand that a second plane had hit...it became obvious it couldn't be an accident. We stopped at St.Petersburg. Everybody kept asking if we had already heard the terrible news and everbody told us different stories about what had happened. In a hotel lounge we saw the first tower crumble, together with people from all over the world, bartenders, hotelmanager etc. We continued on to Orlando because we didn't really know what else to do, most of the day we stayed glued to the TV. We tried to reach our parents and friends, but couldn't get through. There were only short messages coming in, asking if we had heard, if we were Ok, what we knew... It was scary to be trapped in a country at such a time, not knowing what would happen next, if Bush would strike back, when we could get a flight back home, etc. But on some absurd level I'm grateful I have been there since it helps me to understand the spirit of that nation. Americans found so much strength in singing their Anthem and in waving flags proudly. I didn't learn that when I was growing up, but it is something I envy Americans for. In September 2002 both of us returned to the USA- New York City. We visited Ground Zero, a shiver still running down our spines. Our hearts go out to the victims and their families, they will never be forgotten. The following poem I found at the fence of St.Paul's Cathedral: "Do not stand at my grave and weep. I am not there, I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am a diamond glint in snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. As I went to my first class, which happened to be history with Mr. Herzig, we did completely normal activities and normal work, and no one had absolutely any idea what was about to happen that day. I then went to my second class of the day, one of the most boring; chemistry. After we got about fifteen minutes into the period, Dr. Smith came onto the PA system and had told us that there had been plane crashes in both New York City, and in Washington D.C. At that time, the entire school turned on their televisions in horror to find out that middle-eastern terrorists had hijacked planes and deliberately crashed them into the Pentagon and both of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Everyone was so shocked that they stopped what they were doing to find out anymore information that may have been recovered. All of that horrible information that was given at one time resulted in everyone not doing anything for the rest of the day. As the day continued, there were so many emotions going on at one time. We watched as the news anchors from every news channel reported for hours and hours, trying to uncover more information. Meanwhile, the phone bills in D.C. and New York were off the charts with people trying to call their loved ones to make sure they were alright. A fellow student of mine was very upset because both his parents work at the Pentagon, and was trying to call them, but they were alright. That night my family and I drove to D.C. to see the Pentagon. September 11th is a day America will never forget. I remember seeing it in unbelief. I honestly said to myself, "planes aren't meant to fly that low." Then the word L-I-V-E popped up on the screen. In the pit of my belly I felt the worst turn that has ever been there. U.S. soil hadn't been such a breeding ground for outside attack. It was similar to the Columbine shooting, but the deaths were more numerous and hit harder at home. Life can be snatched away in such a quiet moment. Imagine being at your desk, standing in an elevator, or walking down a hall and you see this enormous grey object coming directly towards or feeling the steel of your fragile surrounding bend inwards from impact. We can't imagine the terror that ran in those delicate moments of those HEROS lives. God Bless them, I'll never leave your children, wives, and husbands out of my prayers. Tell us your story: I lost someone very close to me on september 11th, Hi, My name is Moran and I'm from tel aviv, Israel, The first I've heared about the crash I couldnt believe my eyes, to see a plane crash in the world trade center, who would of believed, I didnt know what to think or what to do, I lost someone who was like a mother to me, she was a special woman because she always stood by me no matter what, I still cant believe she is gone... On September 11, 2001 I was in my last semester of Nursing school and going about a typical Tuesday morning, performing my clinical hours at Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St.Francis Campus, in Wichita, Kansas. One of the hospital physicians came onto the unit, an oncology unit, and told us the World Trade Center had just been hit by an airplane. Shocked and concerned, we rushed to the medication room, where we turned on a radio, only to hear more terrifying news. An explosion of unknown source had just occurred at the Pentagon. At that moment, I feared great trouble for our nation, and for my family. I knew we had major trouble on our hands. The news continued only to get worse over the next several hours as I cared for my patients and tried not to show my fear and sadness. I couldn't wait to get home to my family. We were all glued to the television in the following days and weeks. I spent time with my family and began to look at life and liberty a little differently than before. I realized how I had taken for granted my safety and believed that acts of war only happened on foreign soil. I was very proud however, of our President...George Bush, for his actions and words of comfort to our nation. I marveled at his courage and ability to recognize our need to hear about God. He didn't for one minute worry about how some may view his discussions, which openly talked about the Lord and His presence in and with our nation. It has been a year now, and I do feel safe in America and I continue to admire all of our leaders. I love my family as I always have, but I make a point to tell them more often, and I encourage patriotism in my children. All of those lives were not lost in vein. I'll be honest I didn't think it was real. But through the day I would obviously change that idea. I just couldn't and still can't believe all those people died. Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, friends, and coworkers. I felt so disgust at that, that I wrote something in the local paper. I just couldn't believe that the world would come to this. I kinow that it has been a little over two years since that horrible day. Some people have resume their lives and some will livwe with this for the rest of their lives. They had something ripped from them. I think we all did, even if some of us didn't lose a love one. I personally didn't lose alove one but I did lose that security that I always felt here. I'm not saying that the whole world needs to go out and hold hands and sing "come together" but I do think that if we just stop thinking about how we can get revenge. The world doesn't have to be a cartoon, What about all that stuff when Sept.11 happened afterwards we all came together,we need to do that always. Some people were hurt more than others, but everyone was hurt in someway. on September 11, it was a normal day for me, waking up and going to school. After a few minutes in homeroom, my homeroom teacher told us that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Towers. I thought it was a freak accident at first. when a plane had hit the second tower, I knew there was something wrong. When I got home I found out that a plane crashed in Pennsylvania and another into the Pentagon. later, I found out that all these planes were hijacked. I was shock; i never knew anything like this could happen. the next morning, when I watched television, I heard more about the World Trade Center. I found out that thousands of people died in the building. I was terrified when I heard that policemen, firemen, and even innocent bystanders were killed by falling debris. Their intention was to try and divide the United States, but we have been able to pull ourselves together from that tragic day. We were able to reunite amongst ourselves. this is now one of the most pratiotic days of the year. People all over America have put up flags and posters saying, "United We Stand," in every corner. this day is so important that even other countries have joined in to remember this day. it is even acknowledged before basball games. this day is surely one that will never be forgotten. In conclusion, these are my memories from the most tragic day that has ever accured during my life.
