Since our resource area has windows and I could see that all of the teachers were out there I knew that something was going on. When our teacher came back into the room the first thing that he did was tell everyone to be quite and watch what is going on, on the T.V. No one knew what was going on besides the fact that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. Pretty much all that we did the rest of that day was watch the T.V. and try to understand what was going on. I was thankful for my teachers, because they were all understanding that we were confused. They tried there best to help us understand what was going on that horrible day. I was away from my normal job on September 11th, volunteering at the Southern Governor's Association meeting in Lexington, Kentucky. I'd been there since the 9th of September and the 11th was the last and closing day of the meeting. I woke up that morning around 7:30, dressed, and headed over to the Marriott where the meeting was being held. I expected a busy day driving staffers and personnel back and forth to the airport for their flights out of town. Around 8:50 a.m. my cell phone rang...it was my mother. This wasn't unusual since she called me just about everyday. We talked for a minute, then she said (very nonchalantly) "You should turn on a t.v...a plane hit the World Trade Center a few minutes ago". I finished up my conversation and told everyone what she'd said. No one else had heard about it either. We headed for the bar area of the Marriott and commandeered a television. What I saw blew me away. There it was, one of the buildings smoking profusely. I thought, this is weird...why would a big plane fly into the tower on such a clear day? Terrorism never crossed my mind. That all changed a couple minutes later when the second plane came into the shot and plowed into the other tower. By this time there was a sizeable crowd in the bar and all the tv's were on. You could hear an audible gasp. God, that gasp...I'd never heard anything like it. That's what sticks in my head. It was like it hit home to everyone in the room right at the same millisecond. We then knew it was terrorism. You see, none of us thought about it at first. Then, gradually, people started talking about where we were. I mean, we had 9 southern governors right there in one location. Hell, just the day before, on Monday the 10th, Vice President Cheney had been there giving a speech. You have to remember, at that moment, anything seemed possible. Then someone reminded us that the official itinerary showed that the Vice President would be there on Tuesday, September 11th. Now what? Would whoever was doing this come after the hotel we were in? I know, it's Kentucky...like anything like that would happen here. But again, anything seemed possible at this point and people started to worry. By this time, the other two planes had gone down too...into the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. The security details for each governor scrambled to get everything together and get their "packages" home ASAP. Then came the word that the airports were closed...indefinitely. That's when the real panic set in for us. I mean, we had 9 governors there. How are we supposed to get the governor of Louisiana home without a plane? Are we just supposed to drive him home or something? In fact, that's exactly what they did. Each security detail commandeered a rental vehicle that we'd been using that weekend. Nearly all of them started off by noon towards their state lines. That was the plan...each governor would drive to the next state line where that state's troopers would take over his security. They were responsible for getting each one of them through their state until they got to the next one, and so on and so on. Everything went off without a hitch and all the governors got home safely. To say the ones, like me, that were left behind were shaken up would be an understatement. So where does this leave us? I mean, the threat of terrorism is still just as real, if not moreso, than before September 11th. I've become facinated with the whole ordeal...reading everything I can get my hands on, watching every show devoted to it, looking at the video as much as possible. I try to find everything I can about the people on the planes, the people in the towers, the Pentagon, Shanksville, and those brave souls who rushed in without a thought about their own safety or lives. I hope I never have to see a day like that again, although that may be a wishful thought in the day and age that we now live. One thing's for sure...I won't let people forget...I won't let people become passive to September 11th. That day is my generations Pearl Harbor. I want every generation to come to remember those people, those firefighters and policemen. I want them to remain angry (in a constructive way) at the terrorists and the factions that cause this pain. I want them to understand that not all people of dark skin, Middle Eastern decent, or Muslims are terrorists. Most of them are just like us, they just want to live and let live. But most of all, I want them to understand that we control what happens...that we can't keep acting like we're above everyone else. This only breeds contempt and hate. That morning, I went to my job as a pediatric nurse worried about the usual mundane things and left that afternoon with my attitude towards life completely changed. When my office manager walked in around 9:30 AM, pale as a ghost, we had just heard the news that the first tower had been hit, but had no idea of the magnificent damage to come. Hearing about the Pentagon really hit home for me. The town I had just moved from was about 20 minutes away from it and most people I knew either worked there or somewhere near there, including my dad. I called my parent's house as soon as I could to find out if my mom knew anything, but all she could tell me was that he had been evacuated. The next few, dark hours were filled with more and more bad news and we finally had to turn off the radio because we could not listen to any more reports listing the number of casualties. After work, I called my mom again, and heard that my dad was alright, after traipsing through a large part of Washington, D.C. with some coworkers. I also found out that his best friend, (whose office was right next to the bombed section) was miraculously okay as well. Two men that preach at my church both had amazing escapes as well. One was blown across his office as the wall next to his chair was completely destroyed. He emerged without a scratch. The other was attending a conference that day and returned to find his office missing entirely. September 11, 2001 was a tragic day for our country, but it also brought us closer and caused a patriotic movement to sweep our beautiful, free country. My teacher came in looking nervous, and she announced to us that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center, but she wasn't sure if it was accidental or not. The class began to buzz with noise, but we were told to go on working. When I arrived in my world history class, someone was exlaiming that the Pentagon had been hit. Many in the class (including myself) told them they were wrong, of course it had been the World Trade Center. Then our teacher came in and said that both accounts were true. The class went dead silent. He tried to focus our attention on the conquerings of Alexander the Great. It didn't do much good, especially when the next door teacher came in and announced the towers had collapsed, with over 5,000 people in them. My next class, geograpy, we watched in horror as they announced another plane was missing, and they later told it too had went down. By then, many were crying. We had lunch class during geography, and some of the people in another class fearfully told us that the radio said a plane was circling Oak Ridge...my lord, I thought, if it crashes into one of those nuclear plants we will all die. I remember no one ate anything. The rest of the day passed in a daze. My cousin always went home with me after school, and she said "I remembered what you said this morning." And then it came back to me. Before we had left for school, I had had a bad feeling, but I had thought nothing of it then because, in general, I have always hated Tuesdays more than any day of the week. But there had been an extra feeling that morning. Maybe because they played the song "I've Had a Bad Day Again." Anyway, I had announced to her that something bad was going to happen....but I'm sure it was just a coincidence. However, I now have to turn off the radio if "I've Had a Bad Day Again" comes across the station. Tell us your story: My story begins when my mom called me over to our small living room while I was in a chatroom on our computer in my brothers room. My mom told me that 2 planes have crashed to World Trade Center, NY...I honestly didn't know those buildings by name yet, but I had seen them in pictures before. It was almost 5pm here in Finland, and right after a tv-show the news was on. I went to watch it and was stunned. I couldn't speak. I saw those 2 towers in flames, people running on the streets, it was a shock to me! After 5pm I did nothing but kept my eyes on the TV...I kept thinking why could someone do that! I LOVE the US, it's my dream country! I was so afraid of what would happen next, would there be a world war 3?...I tried to call my American friend to Indiana, but no one could get through America by phones! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My name is Linda Shepley and I live near Stoystown. We live up high and we can see over the ridge. We live about 4 miles from the crash site. On Sept.11 about 10:AM I was hanging the laundry on the clothes line when the plane came over . It was flying lower than normal and it was flying on a flight path that I hadn't seen before. It's wings tilted back and fourth . I looked over my shoulder to see it comming over. I watched it not knowing that it was hijacked thinking that maybe something was wrong with it, or because of the airports closing it may be looking for an airport . As it was going out the ridge it was loosing altitude. It's right wing dipped to the right and it looked like it was headed south. No sooner did it turn when it nose dived into the ground. I saw the flames and the mushroom cloud of smoke rise up above the trees. I stood for a moment in disbelief. I then started yelling and running toward the house my husband came running out to see the smoke rise above the trees he then called 911. I called my sister because she lives in the vicinity where the plane crashed. She was ok but she said that it crashed where my son Michael works. My husband and I got into the car and drove as fast as we could to the crash site. The happiest thing that happened that day was to see my son standing there directing traffic. He was shooken up but he was alright. He works at the scrap yard and he was about 250 to 300 yards from where the plane went down. He said it was comming in so fast and loud the noise was terrible. If anyone thinks this was something horrible to wittness it truly was. What my eyes missed seeing when it hit the ground,my sons eyes picked up and he saw it hit the ground. Also I would like to say that as the plane came over and as it crashed it was all intact,there was no smoke or flames or debrie falling from the plane. So that tells all of us that it was not shot down. There were true HEROES on that plane that day. I really didn't pay any attention cause I had no idea what was going on. When Math Class was over, I was walking to my Langage Arts class until a friend of mine yelled, "Amanda! did you know what happened?" and I said "No". My friend then said " 2 airplanes just when through the WTC and its big news" and I said " Well, I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe is was just a plane that was going out of control" I said that cause I didn't know it was terrorisum. When I walked to class, my teacher had the news on and all of my classmates were watching the T.V. My eyes got big when they kept replaying what happened to the buildings over and over again on the T.V. Instead of going over L.Arts, my teacher explained to us what happened and we watched the news for the rest of the hour. The whole day I thought to myself, " Why would someone want to do that to the US when we are so nice to other countries and don't wany any wars and nothing but world peace? and why are there even wars?" I was so lost that day. When I got homw from school, my mom was on the couch watching the news and I told her that I didn't understand. She tried to explain it to me but still I was confused. I went in my room and got on my computer and went online. I had got some e-mail from my cousin who lives in New Jersey and only 20 minutes away from New York City. I didn't check it yet though so I got off and did my homework. After dinner and from getting out of the shower, my Dad came home from work and sat down with my Mom on the couch and watched the news with her all night and recorded the events that took place. Before when I was going to go to bed, I remembered to check that e-mail that my cousin sent me. When I read it. It showed the Twin Towers at night and it was playing "Proud to be an American" in the background. It was a poem about September 11 and the WTC. I cried so much after I read it and then I undestand the pain that the people who had lost a love one. My Mom came in and hugged me and told me that everything was going to be alright. I was standing in front of my building in Midtown, talking to a coworker when a man approached us and said, "Haven't you heard, a plane just flew into the World Trade Center". We looked at each other a moment and then went on discussing the days work ahead. I remember being in a state of shock, I didn't even process what the man had said at first. We got inside and listened to the radio, it was true. I remember being frightened- the first Building, then the second, then reports of an attack in Washington- people were running up the streets and a black cloud filled the air. The trains were closed, and I wondered where I would go... my boyfriend was in CA. I had no family around me. I felt scared and alone. We waited in the building as reports that surrounding buildings were closed down. People were walking back to their homes on foot- Later that evening the trains opened back up. I was on the first "F" train heading back to Brooklyn. The train was so packed full of people that you couldn't move, (it looked quite like the pictures of the trainloads of people during the Holocaust)but even with that overload, there was a disturbing silence. We didn't know if that track would be affected by the collapse of the Trade Center. Every noise we heard, was listened to in anticipation of the worst. I finally made it to my stop. I felt drained. I hadn't eaten all day...it didn't seem important. I walked in a trance-like state, as did everyone. Did it all really happen? I walked to my apartment, opened the door and went straight to the TV. They played the crash again and again. You could see the people jumping out of windows of the building- crowds of people running through the streets in terror... I watched all night, and only stopped when trying to reach my boyfriend in CA. My calls wouldn't go through. They had limited the access so people who might be buried in the disaster could try to get through and let someone know they were alive... I was finally able to get in touch with my family. I didn't stay on long- I didn't want to tie up the line. They were able to let my boyfriend know I was o.k. I finally tried to sleep- every noise I heard made me jump. I felt so alone. I ached to hold my loved ones in my arms. You could hear the airplanes flying overhead- a nightwatch. The day after I painted pictures of what I was watching and then put them away. (I still have a hard time looking back at them.) Just passing the time was an effort. Everyday normalities seemed menial. I didn't reunite with my boyfriend until a week later as no flights were allowed through. Luckily, no one I knew was hurt, out of the thousands that were killed and now...remembered. It was a normal Teusday afternoon at the Marlborough Boys and Girls Club, I had just walked in the Teen Center door when Shannon (the Teen Center staff)told my freind Holly and I to sit down. Holly and I sat there aimlessly waiting for the news she was about to share with us. She said troubbledly, "There has been a misfortune,today four planes took off. All headed in different drections. Two planes hit the World Trade Center, causing them both to collapse. Another one tore into the pentagon. There is still no news on the last plane." I really didnt understand at the time or maybe I just didnt want to understand. I was feeling a little nervous and a little scared, but all at the same time, confused. Holly started tearing and I didnt know how to react to this devistation. I was just in shock. Then Shannon turned on the news. Thats when I saw, with my own eyes, the horror and destruction of our nation.This event happened in the morning while I was at school but I guess the school decided not to tell us because of emotional elements and the learning evironment or maybe they though that we couldnt handle it. I am not sure why they didnt tell us right away. This tradgic event realy hasn't effected my life in any way. Right now I am worried about school and homework, thins teenagers should be worried about. Not a war that I cant even fight in! I need to concentrate on daily issues. I guess I am lucky though because I didnt have anyone close to me die or was even close to dying. I have to focus on living my life to the fullest. Now or days it is possible to imagine Marlborough being the next target of hell. I think that the entire day was important, not just one part.If I HAD to pick one thing, however, it would be the fact that this country came together as one and worked to help each other no matter what our differences were! I think all of us should remember the love, care, hope, unity, strength, and brotherhood that this country lost as one and regained as one. we should not remember the pain, suffering, hate, and gamages this tradgic event cause us. On September 11, 2001 I was in my office at the Administration for Children Services Field Office. I had just started this job a couple of months. You see I worked for the U.S. Customs Service Customs Management Center located at 6 WTC. I remember that September 11 was a nice, clear fall day. I got to work early as I had many things to do. My husband called me at around 8:55-9:05 and told me that a small plain had hit the WTC. I thought he was joking, I really wish he had been joking. I looked out of one of the windows in the back of our building (All of downtown Manhattan is visible from various places in the Bronx.) I saw that one of the twin towers was on fire. At that time I saw how another plane approached the buildings, but I did not see it impact, I only saw the smoke. I ran to my phone and frantically started dialing the telephone numbers to my friends at 5,6 and 7 WTC. The lines were not going through. I tried for what seemed an eternity and then ran back to the back window. However I was no longer able to see the buildings. I thought the smoke was blocking my vision, but I was wrong...the buildings were already gone. We turned on a small tv in the office and every one started to cry. We were in such shock, we were all numb and very scared. At that time one of my co-workers called us into a large room, she asked us to hold hands and pray, which we did. I know not everyone is religious and at times is hard to believe in destiny, but I thank God I was fortunate enough not to be there that day. My brother who is a NYC Police Officer was in Germany with the National Guard, and another close friend who was a port authority police officer was in Cancun in his honeymoon. Was even more incredible is that not one of my friends were hurt that day. To this day the horror of that day seems very real. God bless the souls of all those who perished. May all those people who loss loved ones that day feel comfort and peace in knowing that many people of many different faiths have prayed and shared in their pain. Tell us your story: On Sept 11, My two year old and I had been watching the news.This was rare event because you know how 2 year olds are, we usually watch the DISNEY channel. Anyhow the significane of this is that my beloved sister Lisa is a airline attendant for American Airlines, and she was scheduled to fly home on the flight from Washington to LAX Sept 11. Obviously the flight never made it to LAX, HOW EVER thank goodness she had spoken with my mom earlier and my mom advised against comming home at this time. Lisa is a single mother of Melissa 6 yrs and Allison 3yrs. My heart sank thinking I had lost my sister. The second thought I had was the fear of loss of my husband who is a commander in the National Guard and LAPD. This tragedy broke my heart. I feel empathy for those who lost loved ones.It could have been my sister or husband wasted to this tragedy. Life is not the same since that day for me and I cherish everyday. I also feel the fear and anger of this new unseen unpredictable terrism. Things wont be the same in America, I just feel the need to never forget how vulnerable, and precious our time on earth is.I pray for a better life for my nieces and son Maximillian. My friend's mom was suppose to be flying that day. But she waited for the next flight so she could bring my friend and her brother to school. So the teachers told my friend that her mom wouldn't be flying at all and she was going to stay home. But they wouldn't tell my friend why she wasnt going and they wouldn't let her call her mom. We were very confused...we didn't really think of much until we got onto the busses to get home. See where I live, there's two middle schools. The kids in the other school knew what happened. But they didn't know details. They told us two planes had crashed into the World Trade Centers. We thought that maybe it was an accident....but we were kind of scared because they mentioned terrorists. When I got home I found out everything. We were the only school that they didn't tell...but they thought it would be better for us. Im still not sure about that one. I thank God everyday that I didn't lose anyone I know. Tell us your story: Wake up, 7 a.m. ~ this was to be an exciting day for my two step-grandchildren ~ my husband, Dave and I, are the legal guardians of these two little people; our lives are busy, busy.... Kally, our granddaughter, was going to work with Dave for the morning because it was Sean's first morning at Mother Hubbard Nursery School. Both children were quite excited doing their own special "thing" and having the center of attention focused on them. I remember, very distinctly, thinking how gorgeous the morning was and how very clear the sky was. I was, I believe, as excited as Sean about beginning his new adventure in life and my heart was very full, so happy... Since this was Sean's first morning in the 3-year nursery school program, he and the other children were introduced to the concept slowly; the children were only to spend an hour at the school for the morning. The first half hour was designated for the parent and children to check out the classroom, do a project, meet the teachers. The second half hour the parents were to go the the library to meet with a member of the school board in order to get all the details about the children's up-coming year. In the library, as the parents were sitting and discussing different details of the school year, one of the mom's cell phone rang. I heard her say, "What? You're kidding!" The next thing she said, "Oh, no! Oh, no! This is terrible!" Our attention was riveted on this woman, who we later found out, was speaking with her husband. She turned to us and said, "The World Trade Center was hit by a plane!" Her husband was still on the line and, as she was telling him good-bye she said, "Oh, God. What do you mean? Oh, God!" There was a mass exodus from the Library of Congress buildings of people walking north, many presumably to the Union Station metro. Faces were downcast, people walked quickly and quietly, not in a panic. Police efficiently directed traffic away from the streets leading to the Capitol. One humorous sight: police used large canvas bins on rollers with Library of Congress markings to block East Capitol Street and stop traffic attempting to proceed toward the Capitol. One can imagine a potential terrorist terrified by the Library of Congress bins and turning back because of them. Rather than to further describe my own experiences of the day, I?m more moved to try to put into writing a reaction that has been with me since the event: I still have not adequately come to grips with, for want of a better phrase, the urge to kill Americans that a number of the terrorists undoubtedly had, and the will to act on that urge. It obviously was not an urge and will that arose in a moment of anger. It became the be-all and end-all of their lives. And it became a force of history to reckon with in a world where nations have developed technologies of mass destruction. As a student of American history, I realize I know relatively little about what might be termed a growing ideology of anti-Americanism.
