I am a former journalist, editor, and teacher; I had retired from those jobs to become my sister's business manager in 1997. On Sept. 11, 2001, I was soundly asleep in my apartment, a small two-story carriage house behind my sister's office. The phone rang, and it was my sister, Barbara N. Conner MD, a geriatrician in practice in Hallettsville, TX. "A plane just hit the World Trade Center," she said. "Go turn on TV." I went downstairs, incredulous at the news, and saw the first tower in flames. As an ex-journalist, I thought, "50,000 people may have died; this will be the next world war, the next conflict." I sat and watched the next tower struck; then realizing I might be needed to help with possible grief reactions and calls from our patients, I went to the office, a mere 20 paces away. The rest of the day is a blur; confusion, grief, fear ran through my mind. The loss of life weighed heavily on me; I wished I had skills that could aid in the recovery efforts. I just turned on the NBC Morning Show when Katie Couric announced breaking news "one of the WTC towers has been hit by an airplane". My jaw dropped. I was just at the WTC the year before. I hugged my son and became angry. I thought "what a horrible accident". I wanted to know who was responsible. Katie Couric began an interview with a caller close to the WTC and displayed a live picture of the burning tower. The woman on the phone was describing the plane as a large commercial airplane and it didn't make sense. How could it be? Her voice became histerical she started to scream "oh my god, another one!! The camera panned to the other tower just seconds after the impact. I started to cry. I hugged my son and sobbed. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On 11 September I was at home in Jerusalem, when I received a telephone call from one of my sons who is a newspaper reporter. He related that a plane had crashed into the WTC. Several minutes later television programming was interrupted by a news broadcast with a live pick-up from NY. (I knew the WTC quite well. Only a month before I had used the PATH terminal.) It was hours before regular TV broadcasts would be resumed. I worked in disaster response for many years. I picked up the telephone and contacted a friend in Brooklyn, a chaplain for NYPD. He spoke from his mobile phone. He was caught in traffic on the Upper Giwanis. That conversation was the last that I would have with New York for about 24 hours. A busy signal was received. Lines were down and / or overladed. On Thursday my friend asked that I come to New York to aid Jewish organizations after the disaster. One of those organizations would fund the trip. The first flights from Israel to New York left on Saturday night, but there was no space available. I contacted a friend at Royal Jordanian Airlines. He called El Al and made a reservation for me. (I knew that the Israeli carrier would not turn down their Jordanian counterpart.) I was off to New York. MY dad usually takes me to school every morning but today he was on the couch watching the T.V. I wondered what he was watching and I saw a building on fire. He told me it was the twin towers and a plane had just crashed into it. What was weird, was that my aunt all the way in Hong Kong saw this before us and called my dad and told us what had just happened. IN all of my classes the t.v. was on. I heard the whining of its engines as it decended and slowed so that it may hit its mark. I remember the fear that I felt and the New Yorker(by address) in me saying "You're too cool to run and look up. Everything's fine-you're afraid of your own shadow.". It's true. I was afraid of everything in this city of fear and threat. So I ask the girl watching next to me what it looked like coming down.She said that it went right over the Washington Square arch. I called my husband, who was on location in Chicago, and told him that the strangest thing just happened. Then I walked to work and tried to pretend that everything was ok. 15 minutes later I heard screams and gasps from the crowd on Fifth Avenue. I turned around to watch the second tower explode. Glass like diamonds shining in the sky and falling like rain. It was so beautiful, it was sickening. I called my husband again. He told me, all the way from Chicago, that it was a second plane. At that point, I began to hyperventilate and made my way to the office. I'd only been at the job for a week. We were sent home if we felt safe to go. Otherwise, we could stay. I posted my name and address if anyone needed a place to stay and left to seek comfort with friends. I bought a cup of coffee from a cart. Were looking at the Twin towers when we saw the first plane. I commented to Lisa that I thought the plane was flying pretty low. Then it went straight into the building. The sound of the impact was like a sonic boom. Lisa said that it must of been that the pilot had a heart attack. At first, the flames coming out of the building seemed to be confined to 2 or 3 floors from our vantage point. We could never imagine that it could collapse as it did later. When the second plane hit, I felt that it must be terrorist. For two planes to hit both buildings within a few moment could not be coincidence. The police directed everyone to walk uptown. Lisa and I were shaken as we made our way to Houston St. There we stopped to rest. At that moment, the first building collapsed. We could not fatham it. The whole experience was surreal. I have put off relating this for a while. Even after almost a year, tears come to me and my wife, Lisa. I just happened to be off that day. I remeber waking up that morning and flipping the T.V. on to the news. I sat there staring at the T.V. wondering why they were showing old footage of the World Trade Center boming from a few years earlier. Then I realized that it wasn't old footage and that two planes had flown into the towers. I couldn't believe it. A few minutes later my telephone rang. It was work. They wanted me to come into work immediatly. It took me a while to get there, but when I did it was a very strange atmosphere. I was cryng, everyone around me was crying and there was something huge missing from San Fransisco International Airport.....there were no airplanes taking off or landing...It was very strange. In the days that followed, it was so difficult to go to work and hear nothing, no jet engines.....It was a difficult time for all of us. Days later the first United airplane landed at SFO and I was there to meet the flight. As the plane taxied to the gate the co-pilot oped his side window and put out and American flag and began waving it. I cried so much, but it was wonderful to see that plane at SFO. I went up the jetway and greeted the passengers as the got off the airplane, some cried, aome said thank you and other just didn't know what to do or say. I went to school having no idea what the WTC was, or that these terrorists were so hateful. During our first break which was at 10:30. I remember seeing two of my teachers sitting in their car which must have been listening to the radio. We, the students, still had no idea what was going on, even though the teachers did. The teacher remained to act like nothing was happening. Didn`t even let us know something happened. While I was out on my lunch break, one of my friends came back from lunch and told me what had happened. I was ever so confused. I just heard that terrorists were attacking the U.S. I was so scared. I ran and asked my principal for some details. I wanted to know what was going on. All my principal told me was that planes had hit the towers and everything will be okay. I countinually asked and asked him questions forever and he would answer them with 3 word sentences. I wanted someone to sit down and explain this to me, because I had no idea why the planes had been aimed to the towers. Why the towers? Why are the terrorist Afghans? Why are they doing this to us? It wasn`t until I got home that night that my mom had to sit down and explain everything to me. Once I actualyl found out what happened, I was so mad that my principal and teachers had totally avoided the subject. The next day I went to school and after hearing nothing about it on the daily announcments or from anyone, I decided to stand up for what I thought, and I went down to the principals office and let him know that he should reconize what happened to these people. Stand in silence and remember these people. Explain to the confused students what is going on. Give thanks to the firefighter`s who are down at ground zero right now trying to save lives, and cleaning up the mess so we can countinue with our lives. I was so proud of what I said to my principal because after I said that, he made a very great announcement that reconized all the grateful people who were on the planes, and who were at ground zero and who were in the towers. We also stood in silence to remember those who lost their lives. I wanted to share this with you because I think that even the little toddlers and the children should have every single detail told to them about September 11th. Because we have no radio or television where I work we were oblivious to what was going on. My mother called and asked if we had heard what was happening. She told us a plane had crashed into the WTC and they didn't know why. As she was speaking to me on the phone I remeber these chilling words "Oh my God ! Another plane hit the other tower !" The fear in her voice conveyed to all of us at work what we could not see on television. I hung up and we scrambled to find a TV or radio. Luckily (I guess) we came up with both and were abel to witness the unfolding horror. Then a nother call a palne had hit the Pentagon. Just a few months earlier my wife and I were honored to be in that building as my best frined retired from 20 years in the military. His ceremony was hel very near where the plane hit the Pentagon. Because my frined now worked on government contracts in the civilian sector my thoughts were of him and if he was possibly in Washington. Also friends that we met through him, a husband and wife, both worked in the Pentagon. Were they safe ? I quickly called my friends wife in Georgia and after several frantic attempts was able to reach her. Yeas, my friend was in Washington, but was safe. The ohter couple were safe also - she was working at a differnet location and he literally ran for his life from the smoke and flames. After getting home that night and hugging my family we spent the next days glued to the TV as I am sure much of the nation did. Tears came easily for all of us over the next few days. Even today, a year later I found myslef welling up over the events. As everyon is saying we must honor all of the victims by moving on, but WE MUST NEVER FORGET. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The first bit of news I heard on September 11, 2001, was vague, only that there had been a plane crash somewhere in the US. I thought, "How horrible," as I always do whenever I hear of one, but nothing could prepare me for the moment when I turned the TV on and saw a plane actually crashing into the World Trade Center. Even now when I think about it, almost three years later, it is still so difficult to realize what happened on that September day. At the time, I couldn't quite bring myself to believe what I was seeing on TV--the planes crashing into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, people running and screaming as debris flew everywhere, the uncertainty of what exactly was happening to Americans on our own soil. I remember desperately trying to contact my relatives in New York but only getting a busy signal. I remember at least forty people gathered in the living room of my boyfriend's fraternity house, trying to make sense out of the terrible tragedies we had witnessed and wondering what was going to happen next. I really did wonder if the end of the world was at hand because nothing like this had ever happened in my lifetime. I think one of the most inspiring things I remember was when Congress gathered and sang "God Bless America" on the steps of the Capitol Building. Of course, the images of the firefighters and police officers who were just doing their jobs on that terrible day also gave hope to Americans in crisis. Seeing so many "ordinary" people doing extraordinary and heroic things on such a black day made me realize, perhaps for the first time, how indomitable the American spirit is. I pray every day for the people who lost their lives on 9/11, as well as their families. I hope that they know that they did not die in vain, and that they will always, always be remembered for their ultimate sacrifice. I was listing to the radio and heard them begin to talk about it. I listend for a minute thinking it was just a joke, then when I turned the station and heard other stations talking about it I knew it was real. I became very afraid. I went to work and everyone there was listening to it also. I awnser the telephones at work and people would occasionaly call in orders and all I could think of is "Don't you know what's going on? Why are you calling? Don't you care? Aren't you scared too?" All I wanted to do was go pick up my girls and go home with them, but my job wouldn't let me leave. Then we heard of the second plane and through the fog I began to think that both planes crashing were a terrible coincidence and maybe there was something more going on. The image of those moments that stands out in my mind, is the face of one coworker as he came to tell me a plane had also struck the Pentagon. The look on his face was a mixture of horror and surprise and confusion and his face mirrored what I was feeling inside. The rest of the day is a blur - we only had our radios and 1 television and most of us spent the day crowded around 13" of unbelievable pictures. I spent that evening and most evenings the next 2 weeks watching the rescue efforts, watching the CNN video of the 2nd plane, watching the tear-streaked faces and hearing the pleas of those how had loved ones missing. Although I did not know of anyone personally who lost someone in the attacks, I felt the pain as surely as if I did. It was the only day in my life that I can recall being frightened in every aspect of my life - at home, at work, in my car...in all the areas I'd previously felt comfortable and safe I suddenly found myself waiting for the floor to give way again. I lived in anticipation of the next attack and although some of those feelings have abated and fear is no longer palpable, I know another attack will come again. And I wonder if our nation and our citizens have the resolve and strength to withstand it. Though throughout the mourning kids started to get pulled out of class and were being taken home by there parents. I had no idea why and i didnt think of anything ethier. Before lunch time the princple came of the loud speaker and said there were bees of the playground and we cant go out for recess like normal. On September 11th, I had just gotten my husband off to work. I was getting my breakfast ready. Usually, I would watch some of the morning programs while I ate. On this morning, I stayed in front of the television for three hours. I would have kept watching, but I had to go to class. My husband called me from work and asked if it was true. We stayed on the phone talking while one of the towers fell. Images I will never forget include people jumping out windows, screaming, people covered in dust, and the smoke as the towers fell down. I have never been so scared taking the bus before. That day it seemed like the world stopped. Our University put televisions on in our buildings tuned into CNN for the next week. People would just stop and block people walking as we all stood in horror watching. As September 11th comes around again, I will never forget the horror that this brought to North America. I went to my first period and then my second period with nothing out of the ordinary going on. At the end of third period, which for me was science with mrs. johnson, the principal came over the loud speaker and told the teachers to hold the students pass the bell. I don't exactly remember what he said when he came back on the intercom a few minutes later but he explained that the world trade centers had been hit by a plane and so had the pentagon. Soon after we were released to our fourth period class and we stood around watching the TV not really understanding what was happening. My dad worked in DC so I was scared that he was caught in the middle of it. I had to keep reassuring myself that my mom would have come and got me if something was wrong. When I finally made it home my dad came out and greeted me at my bus stop so that I knew that everything was alright. On a sun-filled Autumn morning, within a period of two hours, the United States had lost its innocence, isolation and security as Islamic terrorists attacked multiple targets in the USA murdering over 3,000 civilians. Four civilian airliners, packed with passengers and fuel became deadly suicide missiles hitting and collapsing New York's World Trade Center and destroying a part of Washington's Pentagon. I was working as a journalist, reporting from the scene in New York City and visited "Ground Zero" twice - a hellish, gray gas and smoke filled area where only twisted metal and body parts remained. A place where I had once worked ? a city within a city from where New York's Twin Towers once proudly touched the sky. No image on television or in the newspapers came close to the gruesome reality that one would find in this mass cemetery. Slowly approaching the area, you could hear the roar of F-15's flying overhead, circling Manhattan. The smell of burnt plastic and rubber fills the air - burning the eyes and throat. You walk past American landmark symbols, such as the NASDAQ building with it?s sign cracked and submerged in debris and thin, grey dust. Israelis live in an atmosphere where senseless and barbaric terrorist attacks have almost become routine. Israelis have adjusted to a traumatized life style where crazy has become the norm. But for America - for Americans it has been very, very different. Americans had become so isolated from global affairs that on September 11th with total surprise they repeatedly kept asking "why", "why did this happen to us?" American culture had become so safe, so secure ? approaching uncomfortable heights of boredom which manifested itself into "reality television". On September 11th - every American had now taken a lead role in the popular TV series "Survivor" and "Lost ". But only for a very short period of time. For Americans are an intelligent and proud people who once threatened, join hands, hold their Stars and Stripes above their heads and transform a "sleeping giant" into a fierce and fiery eagle which is unmatched for it's potent, respected speed and power. Standing among the ruins of the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, wearing a white hard-hat and breathing through a gray and red gas mask - one could only remember the Gulf War. A time when all Israelis wore masks and heard sirens wailing and scuds exploding. In the middle of where the Twin Towers once stood were three gray, dust laden flag poles. One which would bear the flag of New York, another the flag of the World Trade Center and the third - the flag of the United States of America. Only one flag survived this terrorist attack, the American flag and three fire fighters made sure it was going to stand for a long time to come. American flags quickly blossomed in every direction - hanging from tall commercial buildings, taped to store windows and flying from car antennas. Nationalism had revisited the United States for the first time since the December 7th attack on Pearl Harbor. Police, fire and National guard soldiers created a five mile security perimeter. Soldiers marching in green uniforms with automatic weapons at the ready and armored personnel carriers patrolling the streets. It was a nightmarish scene, something that only existed previously in Hollywood monster movies. But now ? it was not King Kong or Godzilla, but rather human beasts which had turned the lights out on what was once America?s vibrant financial capital. In effect, this security perimeter created two cities - one which was completely evacuated leaving behind devastation and thick smoke south of Canal Street and the other up North ? clean with restaurant and hotel doors open but almost completely deserted. Traumatized New Yorkers took refuge in their cement caves as others headed for their green and removed suburban homes. The only activity was in the city to the south where brave rescue workers from New York and those who had driven hundreds of miles to assist were digging under intense search lights, non-stop for any signal of life. Many of these huge men, sweat dripping from their faces, were seen collapsing and crying from total exhaustion - not wanting to leave, not wanting to rest - their only desire was to find survivors who might still be alive trapped in air pockets below. Vietnam veterans had dusted off their old uniforms volunteering to join the search with sniffer dogs attached to their wrists. Tons of supplies were donated and placed at the site. Food, medical and construction materials were within a few feet of the workers. At this point only 159 bodies had been recovered. 20,000 tons of debris had been carefully removed - ever so carefully so as not to create further danger for the survivors and rescuers and so that criminal evidence could be gathered and analyzed. For a period of time, I was detained by the FBI. They ignored my New York Police Department press credentials and were obsessed with my Israeli nationality. After three hours they released me, taking both my film and press credentials. They were overreacting, but I could not blame them, it was the first time that many of them were face to face with terrorism. Some Israeli officials suggested that I file formal complaints, I responded, ?this is not the time, these are our friends and they are traumatized, let it go?. The policeman, the fireman, the uniformed soldiers in their new black boots ? they all had tears in their eyes. A piece of America had been ripped away from them. We were on holy ground, no one spoke at ground zero unless they had to. You worked, you ate, you rested and worked again in a deafening and depressing silence. You smelled death and heard only the sound of jackhammers. As one left "Ground Zero" you could not miss the hundreds of memorial candles lighting up the entrance to the New York fire department's World Trade Center Ladder Company Number 10 which had lost so many good and brave men. Thousands of posters were clinging onto telephone and electric poles with photos staring at you, descriptions of many of the men, woman and children who were missing. Darkened churches, parks and subway stations were also lit up displaying more posters and more flowers throughout the city. You could not escape the shock, tears, or anger - for America and the world had never witnessed such an evil and barbaric act of terror in the history of mankind. You could only think - what kind of people, what kind of animals could kill so many, could even kill their own Muslim brothers who were working in the Trade Center. As I was now riding north on a subway train to the other city, two exhausted and spent fire fighters sat across from me. I asked them what they thought, how would they describe all that they had seen. They looked up at me and responded with only one word - "war". Since 9/11 I have had events of major loss that were unconnected to 9/11 but which make the memory of that day very special. The morning of 9/11 my husband had gone to our community site to take our trash and as he arrived back home I had just turned on the news reports of the tower bombings. We watched the tower fall together, holding on to one another and weeping. Since that time, my home has burned, my husband has passed away and so have both of my parents. Today I have felt very heavy and oppressed all day, almost like that original day. My life is going very well at the moment but I think I am feeling some of the collective grief. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11th, 2001 was a day that I was dreading...I was to go in to have my tonsils out at the age of 29. I would be out of work for at least 2 weeks and possibly longer and I wasn't sure how I was going to be able to afford rent, groceries and all that good stuff. I was going through a painful divorce and life was looking rather bleak. A nurse came out in the hallway and gave me a fast-acting sedative to prep me for surgery. It hit me very quickly but just as I was passing out, I heard someone say 'one hit high and one hit low!' They sounded incredulous but I had no idea what anyone was talking about. After surgery I was on heavy pain killers and had no idea what had happened for almost a week after but when it finally dawned on me that our world had changed so severly, I was in shock. I was also in incredible awe at the tremendous acts of heroism and courage that took place in New York. Bravery at it's highest form. These are the people that I want to be heros for my children..not actors, sports figures or ficticious supermen but the real men and women who helped and saved others with no thought for themselves. Both civilians and emergency workers alike. September 11th was humanity's bleakest, darkest hour...but it was also it's brightest and most shining! Suddenly my troubles did not look so scary...
