We went to a television and saw the horrific scenes of the planes crashing into the two towers and people jumping out of these towers. We were hearing the radio and the music stop and all we heard was something was going on. When I heard them mention the World Trade Center I thought they were reporting something about the 1993 moment, but as I kept listening it became clear that something unthinkable had just happened. Still happening. As we goto to our new home all were heard full blast were radio stations reporting what was happening. We were all in disbelief!! I just want the people who read this one day that those people who did this horrible act were not doing it in the name of their God, but on orders from a man who thinks he is God. We will never forget what happening and nobaody should. We need to remember that our freedom is not something to take for granted. We as Americans need to fight for our freedom and show the world we are willing to do what it takes to keep our freedom. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11th I woke up on September 11th and it was a sunny, semi warm day. It felt like any other day really. I got on the bus and went to school. I hung out with friends in my first and second class. In the middle of third period is when I found out about the terrorist attacks. I left class to get a drink and a teacher was walking down the hall and saying something. At first I thought he was talking to me, so I asked him what he said. He told me to go and tell my teacher to turn it on CNN. So I hurried back to my class and told Mrs. Lamb to turn on the TV. As soon as we turned it on they showed the first tower in flames. I was very confused. I had no idea what was going on, to be honest I was a little scared to know what was going on. I wasn't sure I wanted to know. Then a newscaster came across the screen and said that a plane had flown into the tower. After hearing this, the first thing that popped into my head was the bombing in the twin towers in 1993. When class was over everyone in the halls were talking about it. I stepped into fourth period class and it was so quiet, which is very unusual for my art class. We sat there the whole time with our noses stuck to the TV. It was so sad. By this time the other plane hit the second tower. When the towers started to collapse I started to get teary. I still couldn't believe this was happening. I thought it was just a really bad dream. Then later on I heard that a plane hit the Pentagon and then one crashed in Somerset, PA. The plane that crashed in Somerset, PA from what I heard was supposed to come to Somerset, NY. It was suppose to hit our power plant, AES. During the next few days of school we watched over a nd over again the devastating disaster. Each time I watched it made me think to myself, wow what if that plane had hit our power plant? What would have happened to us? It was so important to watch the news every night and see what was go ing on and how people had reacted to all this. It still amazes me that someone can be so cruel and hurtful. After the devastating disaster, everyone, including me was very sad and had hopes on pay back for Osama bid Laden. This tragedy influenced people and we know that America became united once again. We pulled through it and now are trying to move because everyone is "PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN!" I returned to my car with my 2 week old baby whom I was taking to work with me that day. When getting in the car at a few minutes after 9:00 am I heard the reports on the radio of a a plane hitting tower 1. While on my way to work I heard the report of another plane hitting Tower 2 and the Pentegon. I immediately drove to my mothers house and turned the TV on and watched in utter amazement. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My mother called me a few days ago and told me about this site. She thought it might help me. You see, I am one of those emotional people that cry at the drop of a hat. Yet somehow during the days and weeks and months that followed the tragedies of September 11th last year, I didn't cry; at least not very much. Not the buckets worth that I would have expected from myself. In some ways I couldn't. I was for all intents and purposes numb. I felt like that sense of safety we all (us Americans) took for granted was gone. Some things would never be the same again. Living near DC, people talk about not having to worry about how to go on after World War III or a nuclear attack, because we would be killed in the first strikes. That's what 9/11 felt like. I was asleep when my phone rang around 9am. It was my dad calling to see what I was doing and if I had heard the news. He told me about the plane hitting the World Trade Center. I turned on the news and pretty much kept it on for the next several days. I was watching the TV when the second plane hit the other tower. I was watching the TV when I heard a sonic boom and felt as my house shook and as I learned that a plane had hit the Pentagon. I was watching TV as the first tower collapsed and then the second. It all seemed surreal, like a movie. I tried calling my two sisters to let them know I was OK. I talked briefly to my one sister, who was living in Falls Church at the time, but only got the others voicemail. Since she was away, attending the University of Delaware and was probably in class, I wanted her to know that we were all ok. But were we all ok? I finally talked with my mother. Her office at the time was in Rosslyn and they were all told to go home, but traffic was horribly backed up, because all government agencies in DC were also being told to close. What was a normal 10-15 minute drive took her nearly an hour that day. There was one last person that I was worried about. My friend Dave has a framing shop on Columbia Pike, just down from the Pentagon. Since he is hearing impaired and does not communicate using the phone, calling him was out of the question. Because of the mass exodus from DC, I knew driving would be nearly impossible and decided to head out on foot. Both to see if he was ok, and also to get a look at the Pentagon. I'm not quite sure what it is that draws us to things...why people must look at accidents as they drive by...I just had to know. It took me nearly an hour to walk that mile, in large part because of the cars that were everywhere and the roads that the police had already begun to block off. When I reached the shop, I discovered a closed sign, so I figured Dave was ok and that he had headed home for the day. At that point, I continued down Columbia Pike towards the Pentagon. Smoke filled the air, thick balls of black and grey. I passed many Pentagon employees walking in the other direction. Walking away and trying to get home to loved ones. As I later learned, since the entire site had been declared a crime scene, they were forced to leave their cars there and find other means of transportation. And if they took the metro, then they had to walk to another location since the Pentagon stop was closed. It was to be the beginning of many days of no metro trains or buses stopping at the Pentagon. What I saw when I reached the end of the street will stick in my minds eye forever. The actual site with my own eyes was 1000x more vivid than any of the images I saw on TV. Which images are from that moment and which are from the countless times I would drive by for the next few days and weeks are somewhat of a blur however. There was this huge, impenetrable structure with a giant hole the size of a football field. I did keep going back to look. Somehow, at first, it helped. In between the threat of another plane, bombs, suspicious packages, and exploding manhole covers in DC, finding out more information and seeing things for myself helped. I remember hearing that the fire went on burning for days before it was completely out. That rescue workers were working around the clock, and I even drove by once in the middle of the night and saw the huge lights they had erected so they could continue working. Places were established for people who wanted to help. Such an outpouring from people who wanted to help but didn?t quite know how - counselors came, people brought food and shelters for workers; so much love. I remember the newscasts telling people to hold off on going to donate blood unless they had type O because the blood banks were full. A makeshift memorial began at the corner and it was incredible to see all of the flowers and tokens that people were leaving in memory of those lost. The rest of that day and week is mostly a blur. What I remember are the constant sounds of F-16's and helicopters flying over my house and emergency vehicles driving down my street (Washington Blvd. is the direct route to the Virginia Hospital Center of Arlington where they took most of those injured). I went to stay at a friend?s house in Fairfax to get away for the weekend. The sounds were constant. That's what I remember the most, the sounds of war. Make no mistake, like it or not, we were experiencing first hand war...here on American soil. I was supposed to fly to Buffalo last October, but was not ready to board a plane yet. It was months before I was ready and even then I was extremely nervous, as I'm sure others were too. Even after the clean-up was underway, other threats kept coming in the form of Anthrax scares. It seemed like it would never end. One good thing in the aftermath was niceness. Road rage was suspended, albeit temporarily, and people were nice to each other for a while. There was a resurgence of manners... please and thank you...opening doors for others...letting people into your lane...things that were once the norm, but had become lost along the way, returned for a brief period of time. Like many, I began to rethink my life priorities and goals, spend more time with my family, and reconnect with old friends. Why did it have to take such a tragedy to get us all to do that though? I wonder what the long-term impact these events will have really is. Not that we should ever forget, but we do have to go on living. The hard part is to not feel guilty for that; that we can go on living when so many have died. I have since moved to Buffalo, New York to attend graduate school. The timing right in so many ways...I wanted to pursue a Master's degree, be near my extended family, and be away from the DC area. Don't get me wrong, I love Virginia. I spent nearly 20 years of my life there. Arlington is beautiful, being near the heart of government and politics is great. But it was time for a break from the fast pace. I miss seeing my immediate family every day though. My one sister had a baby in May at the very hospital the ambulances were traveling to last year. The other transferred schools and is now attending Old Dominion University. I try to talk to them both every few days. The flags everywhere, the candlelight ceremonies, the outpouring of love...I do miss that. On this one-year anniversary, I wish I were able to drive past the Pentagon and have gone to the various events in the DC area to pray and remember. On this day I was at Northmont High School in Clayton, Ohio. At the timesof the attackes on the World Trade Center, I was in my second peroid class, Biology, but the I didn't find out about it until third period English. When I first walked into the classroom the TV was on showing people screaming and running when they saw the first plane crash into the first tower. At first I didn't think it was true because I didn't think someone would really crash a plane into a bulding. But then I saw the secould plane go in to the second tower. Then I knew it was real. Later on that day, I heardthat another plane had crashed into the Pentagon. Later both towers collapsed, and a fourth plane crashed in western Pennsylvania. At that point I was getting scared because I didn't know what was going to happen next. In my opinion, I think the hereos are the fire fighters, policemen, and everyone else who tried to help people fet out of the towers and Pentgon. They wanted to save as many lives as possible knowing that maybe they could loss there's as well. While we were passing I saw one of the coaches enter the pool deck and tell our coach something we didn't know what he was just told but we knew it was something bad. Our coach just shook his head and our other coach put her hands over her mouth. When we got out and where in the showers one of our teammates came over to us and said," Hey, did you guys hear about the plane that was hijacked and flown into the world trade center?" We all thought it was part of a joke so we said no and waited for the punch line. She just stared at us and said,"No, its true a plane really did crash!" Then we stared at each other in disbelief. I had not fully realized how bad it was until I went to my 4th period class and actually saw the plane hit the 2nd WTC and I began to cry. When I got home that day my uncle called. He had just recently become a firefighter. He told me some of the men from his station were leaving for NY but he wasn't because he was new. After a whileof silence my uncle said,"Being a firefighter myself, I know for a fact that if I was a NY firefighter I would not hesitate whatsoever,running into one of those buildings to fullfill my duties."I cried some more and said goodbye. The thing that will stay in my mind forever is what my uncle said that day. I know that those men and women who perished are truly heroes. I will never forget.... Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I heard about the attacks, after 9 a.m. Mass, at St. Francis of Assisi, here in Astoria, Queens, New York City. We're about 10 miles from the World Trade Center. About 9:25, Tilly, a woman about 70 years old, a regular at the weekday Mass, took the pulpit, very distraught, in tears, talking about a crash of some sort, and asked us to pray an "Our Father," "Hail Mary," and a third, shorter prayer. I was in the back of the church, heading out when this happened, and didn't quite hear what she was concerned about, but added my prayers to the 24 or so others there. Even the priests had left the altar and exited the church by then. I called my Dad on my mobile phone to get details as I walked to the polls, for it was primary day in New York City. I knew Dad would be informed as he and my Mom often have the TV on. He explained what was happening. It was a very peaceful beautiful cool morning in Astoria, even after the attacks. The Only sign of trouble I heard other than Tilly's plea was the wail of sirens at 9:38 a.m. Later, an engine from FDNY Co. 61 hurtled past my local diner, alarm blaring, heading west on Ditmars. Toward noon, I walked toward the 31st Street subway station, in hopes of getting a closer look, either from Manhattan or from the elevated tracks in the station. I had binoculars, and en route I realized that the binoculars would be useless, as the two towers had collapsed. There was essentially nothing to see from afar. I was also increasingly self-conscious about seeming a voyeur. I bought some lunch on the bustling thoroughfare, and sat on a bench and listened to a woman who said she had tickets to a Broadway show for later that day. The angry woman said to a friend while discussing the morning's horrific events, "I want to murder these people." She was referring to the many Arab that have come to live in Astoria. I wrote to some friends the next day via e-mail: "Hi Lucila, I'm OK here in Astoria. Never got a chance to get into Manhattan yesterday. How'd everyone else make out? Some of the oldtimers in the neighborhood were, sadly, blaming the many Muslims who've moved into the area. One woman, about 65, was particularly vocal, talking about "them." A wave of anti-Muslim hostility may well be one of the results of the attacks. When I heard that the "twin towers" were crashed into by airplanes, I was surprised that such people, the terrorists had done such a thing to America. As I watched, I felt a part of me break. The "twin towers" had been hit and I was thinking to myself, "How can such a thing like this happen and why is there so much hate in this world towards America?". As I watched, tears came dropping down my face. I didn't think that people were ever like this. For me, I wonder how the families of those who lost their lives feel. I was watching the news and this talk show called Oprah. On Oprah they were showing all the fathers that had died in the tragedy. It made me cry and think that I am very thankful to have my family with me to this day. For the children that lost their fathers and all the wives that lost their husbands, I send my deepest condolences. Be stong because those people who died are in a better place now! They were heroes because they died with love for their country. Through all this, I noticed that ever since September 11th, everyone became nicer and more patriotic. I've seen houses with the American Flag outside their houses. It's a wonderful scene just to see the American Flag flying in the air. I have more pride in my country than I did before. I thought, 'What a horrible accident,' but didn't expect anything else. We were listening to the radio on the way to school, hoping to hear good news. Unfortunately, we heard that another plane had hit the other tower. My intuition told me that something was wrong, and I started to worry about the people in New York...mainly a few of my friends. When I got to school, I heard that both planes had been headed here, to California. Then I knew, this had to have been planned, and I was scared. I knew that no matter what happened, no matter how much we hoped, everyone would in some way be affected by this. In my second period class, we were watching the live coverage on CNN when the towers collapsed. I was terrified. I'd lived my life never being in touch with death at this magnitude, and I, perhaps for the first time, came in touch with my mortality. I remember my friends and I were scared to death of an attack happening to LA, we talked for hours on the phone. I can still see the images of the towers collapsing in my mind. Over and over again. It was horrifying. On the opposite side of the country, we were still hit by this attack on our security. We're not invincible, we know that, now. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at work. A coworkers mother called to tell her a plane hit the WTC. Being from NJ and as a kid watching those towers go up I was very consumed with what was going on. Luckily my friend had a small TV so I rushed up to her office and watched in total disbelief. Then the second plane crashed into the other tower and I thought I was seeing a replay of the first, then it hit me, I wasn't. I thought I was going to get sick right then and there. I couldn't believe it! I felt like my home was being destroyed. I kept watching and couldn't take my eyes off of the TV. At some point I remember leaving her office and going back to mine, calling my husband as he was in shock too. We couldn't believe it. As the morning slowly rolled in to afternoon, and it hit us that we had many friends and family that worked in NYC. I started calling people to see where they were and if they were safe. Luckily they were. Having heard a rumor that another plane was heading for California, I called my mother, who lives in California along with the rest of my family, to make sure they new what was going on. My father-in-law was stuck in NYC for three or four nights, he worked for ConEd, and helped with electrical hook-ups. The worst part of that was we couldn't get in touch with him for a couple of hours that day. My cousin was walking towards the disaster while it happened and realized what was going on and started walking the other way to get to the ferry home. Then the Pentagon...oh God not another. I have a friend who works at the main post office in DC. Trying to call her, and not getting through. Finally she picked up. As she did the alarm went off for them all to evacuate and go home. Then the last plane. My heart went out to all of those people.... That night just watching it all over again with tears streaming down my face, my husband and 15-year-old son getting very angry.... Comimg into work the next day and so many emails. People I work with over the internet and over the phone, I have never seen them, concerned with "my people" as some called them. One women was so overcome with emotion for me, and all the people who perished, just started crying. I had to calm her down. I felt so much emotion from these people. I hope that the families that had their lives ripped apart in seconds that day felt the kind of emotion I did, and hopefully more! I still cry at the most strangest of moments. All of a sudden, while driving mostly, the image will come back and I will cry right then and there. A part of me died that day, trust for people mostly. My mother came running into the kitchen, saying the most incredulous things about the WTC, The Pentagon, The Capital, it's all gone, she said. Half awake, I turned on the TV, and I will never forget what I saw. It was too big for me...too incredible. I ran upstairs to wake my husband, because I knew this was something I could not deal with alone. You see, I was born and raised in NY. Even though I live in California now, NY is inside of me, in my heart and in every bone in my body. My heart ached so badly for New York, and so badly for the nation. I remember my 6th grade music teacher coming in our room belowing something about the World Trade senter being bomed. At first I wasn't really paying attention to what they were saying. Then my dad told me and I didn't believe him. I just sat there watching the news in shock. When my mom picked me up, she had the radio on the news listening to it. By the time she picked me up one of the buildings was already down. She aked if it was down and I told her; neither of us could believe it. At school everyone was talking about it and that was the topic of the day, of the year. I saw the planes in the buildings and the newscaster talking about it. Saying that she could not believe what she was watching. Then, another plane hits the pentagon and no one believes that. Three planes hit three different buildings in one day. In addition to the plane that almost crashed into a building in Pensylvania. I was just so shoked and still am after a year. It came across that there had been an attack on america. We turned the radio up. They were saying how the trade centers had been bombed. At that very moment my heart sank into my chest. At the time I was engaged and about to be married on the 15 of Sept to a military service member. The only thing I could think about was oh my god I hope no one is hurt. I was worried about my soon to be husband and if his base was going to be hit next and if he was going to have to go to war. As soon as my cousin and I arrived home I tried to call him. Of course I didn't get an answer. At that moment I had been working on the last touches on our wedding. I put everything on hold. My cousin and I turned on CNN and didn't stop watching for hours. We couldn't believe what had happened. It was so sad and horrible. I finally got in touch with my soon to be husband later that night. It was then that he informed me that he would not be able to attend our wedding. Of course I was understanding with everything that had went on but I was also sad. All I could think about was the poor people that were in those buildings and around them. How all of this is affecting them and there families. How some children and spouses may never see there moms, or dads, or wives, or husbands again. I couldn't stop thinking that I could have been one of those people. My soon to be husband could walk out that door tomorrow and never come back. I guess that was when I realized how dangerous some peoples jobs really are. I would just like to tell all those families that lost a loved one that day that I am so sorry for your loss. Everyone that loss there lives that day in some way is a hero. I did get married on September 28, 2001 to a wonderful man. Yes, my husband did go to war in afganistan he is home now but there are still a lot of service members and other people over there trying to stop this terrorism. I just want to thank them for fighting for our freedom and for protecting us. All of thoses peole who lost there lives on Sept 11 and the ones in the war on terrorism were very brave and in my heart will always be a hero and will always be remembered. Just before 8:55am, an English teacher, Joe Ippolito, a great English teacher and a guy with a great sense of humor, passed my room with a comment, "a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center." He spoke those words without the usual smile and twinkle that he usually has in his eye. I knew immediately he was not kidding. I looked out the window and saw the most beautiful day.... bright blue sky without a cloud. Logic told me that planes do not fly into buildings with today's technology. Three of my football players were in my class. They pretty much ordered me to go "find out if it is true." I walked quickly to Room 112 where the teacher was hooking up his cable TV. He turned on the TV about 15 seconds before the second plane hit the south tower. It was a very long walk back to my room. I wanted to cry, but knew i couldn't. I wanted to scream, but I knew i couldn't. I honestly don't know how long it took me to walk the maybe 100 feet to my room. It felt like a long time. My players knew instantly that something was very wrong. I told my class that it was a day that we will never forget....a day where the world changed. Both towers were hit and burning.
