Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just gotten back to Boca Raton on Monday Sept. 10 from working an event in Clearwater Beach. I was going to leave Boca Raton on Tuesday morning to drive back to my home in Naples, Florida. Tuesday morning I was fast asleep when I heard my buddy David whom I was staying with come in the door screaming, I immediately got up to find out why he was screaming a plane hit the World Trade Center. David was hysterical and I was confused, we went downstairs to find the TV on and a picture of the WTC smoking from the top of the building. The news anchor was saying that a commercial jet liner had slammed into the WTC. As we watched in disbelief, a second plane hit the other tower, it was surreal, we couldn't believe what we were seeing. I remember changing the channel to see if maybe it wasn't real, but each channel was showing the same thing. At that point the media started to speculate it was a terrorist attack by Osama bin Laden's group. I remember watching that TV for the next 6 or 7 hours, I couldn't move. I tried to call my family overseas, but the phones were jammed. Finally my Mother got through and assured me that she and my Dad were ok, but told me to stay put, not to travel anywhere. My college roommate is a United States Marshall in Manhattan, so immediately I tried to call him to make sure he was safe, but I could only get his voicemail. He was safe, about 5 blocks away from Ground Zero when the attacks happened. I remember talking to him a day or two later and he told me that he had over 150 voicemails from concerned family and friends. The rest of the day I remember watching the coverage and hearing about the plane hitting the Pentagon and the plane that crashed in PA. Here in Florida, the roads were closed, the airports were closed and even Disney closed. I remember the feeling of desperation of not knowing what was happening. I was afraid that, that day was going to mark the beginning of WW3. That night, President Bush addressed the nation and declared war on the terrorists that had perpetrated the attacks. Being the son of an Air Force Officer, I felt a great deal of patriotism from the way America reacted to the events of September 11, 2001. I am proud to be an American!! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was in eleventh grade that year, and I found out just before my second period class. In the hall the teachers were talking really queitly and worried to eachother but I didn't pay much attention. When the teacher came in and told us that a plane had crashed into the Trade Center building in New York, I thought it was some kind of weird game to show us what it would be like if we had lived during some big event like Pearl harbor or something. How history is more than just dates and names, but how it really affects people who live then. In retrospect that made no sense, because it was a study hall and why would she want to teach us something about history? But I kept waiting for the "just kidding" that never came. Everyone was quiet and weird after, but wasn't until they told us over the intercom that the pentagon had been attacked that I really got it. It wasn't a game, or even an accident; we'd been ATTACKED. The rest of the day we tried to talk our various teachers into letting us watch or listen to the news, and most agreed. I still remember how queit we all were in English while the old radio the teacher had brought in crackled with static and people called in to the station to rant about how we "ought to nuke the whole middle east." It scared me almost as much as the attacks themselves, hearing people talk like that and knowing that there was a war coming. When I got home I went right to the tv and watched the news until my parents got home, and then we went out to eat because no one felt like cooking. It was surreal; there were huge lines of cars at all the gas stations because people thought the oil was going to get cut off or something, and at the restaurant total strangers would talk to us about it because everyone was thinking about the same thing. After dinner when we got back home, I went right back to watching the news. It was pretty much the same thing over and over, except when they showed a bunch of people--government officials and representatives I think, I don't remember very well anymore--all standing together and crying and singing "God Bless America." That image sticks out in my mind the most out of everything that happened that day. I didn't know the lyrics back then, but I tried to sing along anyway. It was dark and they were outside, with the world seemingly crumbling around them--around us--and it felt more like a prayer than a song. That song still makes me cry, sometimes. I am gardening early before the September heat builds. My hands caked with terra firma. I remember the telephone?s persistence. The erratic answering machine is again... not picking up. One more time I remind myself to replace it. ? Piece of junk? I am muttering , as I head to the house. Two minutes ago I was making my small world more beautiful with exotic tropical plants. The lushness of Key West is incredible and fragrant. Bright, saturated hues glimmer through my white picket fence, a perfect paradise, far away from any urban jungle. Now I am running for the phone. The damp smell of mother Earth increases as I bring my hand closer to my ear. The voice on the other end is firm and unbending. The frankness of his tone wipes the smile off my face. ?TURN ON THE TELEVISION!? shouts my good friend ?What Channel?? I ask wincing. ?IT DOESN'T MATTER, JUST TURN IT ON!? Mud and all, I reach for the power button. Peter Jennings is facing me larger than life. His serious brown eyes tell a thousand stories, his lips only one... terror from above, maybe an accident. Then I see the plume of smoke from the North Tower of the World Trade Center, a giant gaping hole where flames from the very bowels of Hell seem to be licking the sky. I am still holding the phone. My other hand leaves a dark brown print on my mouth and the sides of my face. I am standing in my living room watching a surrealistic moment in history. Breathless. The second plane sneaks around and hits from behind. The whole world sees it live on television. I recall my friends there are possibly trapped inside. I remember my brother is in another Manhattan skyscraper. I hang up on my friend and call my brother Jon. Futile. Phones are jammed, cell lines don?t work. Now I feel the breath and the heartbeat of a Nation?s panic. Then the Pentagon appears. Hell?s fury has found it?s way there too. I stood there dumbfounded with mud on my face for most of the morning. At any other given moment an earthen hand print cartoon like might have been funny. I look, the way America feels, standing, staring, eyes filled with tears with mud on my face. Loss of life is unimaginable. Our impregnable armor pierced with silent ease. The United States never had to look over it?s shoulder...until now. I found my brother thank God, but that afternoon I lost four of my friends. People that I played spin the bottle with as a nerdy teenager, gone forever. Even one of my parent?s friends decided to end his life by jumping instead of burning. What a choice to make. We have all been touched, we all have mud on our faces. I heard great tales of heroism, performed by ordinary people that day. If it had not been for the actions of those plane passengers we would be mourning one more symbol of American freedom; the White House. What a choice to make, be killed by plunging into another iconic structure, or fight for the preservation of the American spirit and risk the consequences. Cell phones ringing form the air reach the ground, just to say ?goodbye? and ?I love you?, ?remember me but remember that you must live life, and that you are free?. That plane too, would be taken by those flames; those demonic flames. Fear of flying, driving, living, dying, Americans are afraid to open their mailboxes, let alone travel. The emotional impact of the 11th is great , the economic impact is even greater. The stock market spasms to all time lows. People cancel their vacations. Global tourism halts. Worried looks on the faces of Duval street waitresses sober me. They have nothing to do except worry. Harold Wheeler director of the Monroe County Tourist Development Council tells me that people are not afraid to fly today as they were a year ago, the economy however, has just soured. Hotels are dropping their rates to make up for head counts, causing bed taxes to go down, affecting advertising. Because of room rate deals, occupancy numbers equal last year, yet the quality of tourist dollar has changed, they are not spending. We depend on tourist spending. The economy is cyclical, it will come back... we hope. I too realize my own earning power eventually will steady. I still have one more spiritual task, I must go home to New York. This is why I travel with the Schooner America summering in Newport Rhode Island. She is making the journey south to New York Harbor for the September 11 remembrances. I want to say goodbye to my friends who died and to remember that life goes on sometimes with pomp and circumstance. I want to see all those ships in the harbor honor the dead and to let the rest of the world know that freedom still rings loud and clear, even if the bells are a bit cracked. When I was little I used to lie on the bow of my grandfather?s boat and look up at the stars in the prussian blue sky. Together we would pick out the constellations. Looking up at the same prussian blue sky on the deck of ?America ?I wonder what Orion?s belt would look like if there were two stars missing. Now I begin to wonder what New York will look like with two of her stars missing. She also told us that they were only telling the 6th graders of what happened so we shouldn't talk about it in the hallways. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just gotten to work and begun to settle into my morning when a co-worker told me that a plane had crashed into the WTC. I was shocked, but the impact had not fully hit me yet. A few minutes later, I heard about the 2nd plane. Every person on my floor crowded into a small office and sat glued to a tiny television set for the next four hours. I just kept thinking, "The WTC is gone! NYC is changed forever, everything is changed forever." I felt nauseas at the thought of all the people on those planes. I spent the morning trying to contact my family, especially my father and tell him not to go to work. Rumors were spreading like wildfire and I was afraid. I felt as if at any moment my own building was going to be hit. I tried to contact my boyfriend who works near the FAA tower in Leesburg, which I had heard was destroyed. I just wanted to be sure everyone I knew was safe. I was numb, it didn't feel real. I went home early in the afternoon and met up with friends and we talked about it all night long. The next day it all hit me. I was watching TV and the mother of one of the victims of the plane that crashed in PA was talking about her son, and how proud she was of him and how lucky she was to be able to share that with the whole country. Her strength touched me so much, I started crying and crying and did not stop for hours. I pulled myself together and drove to class. Listening on the radio to everybody's thoughts, seeing people on the road... knowing that we all had felt the impact of this horrible tragedy. I felt a bond with these strangers like I never thought possible. For days I cried... and I was very afraid. I remember thinking just how fragile our lives are, and that the safe bubble in which we live can be penetrated at any moment. I learned many life lessons, in a one very harsh way: Cherish what you have. Be grateful for the little things. Always show you care. I'll never be the same, and I'm sure nobody will. I am so lucky to be where I am in life: I'm able to get a education, I experience true love every day, I have a supportive family, and loyal friends, a roof over my head and food in my belly. It was during our morning recess, when the buzz went through the staffroom. One of our grade 8 classes began their day with an internet update of the world events. This group watched much of the mornings events unfold online. By lunchtime, we had an emergency staff meeting to inform us of the specifics of the events and the school board's directives regarding how we should share this information with our students. I was a first year teacher, in the classroom for only one week, and now I was being asked to tell my class of 7 and 8 year olds that the world had changed that morning. As I began to share the factual information of the morning, many of my students expressed a variety of responses. As our discussion continued, they expressed fear that the CN tower might be the next building targeted. I spent the rest of the day reassuring them that they were safe, while inside I was full of fear. I couldn't let them know all that I had pieced together, I couldn't politicize the events, I could only state the cold hard facts. As soon as school was dismissed, I logged onto the internet to see for myself. I was horrified as I watched the videos of the impacts. There was a knot in my stomach that wouldn't go away. Over the next few days, there were numerous discussions in our classroom. The children wanted to know why? Why had this happened to innocent people who simply went to work that morning as any other? Why would anyone choose to die for this purpose? I found that I had no answers. It was the most helpless feeling. I was their teacher, I was supposed to know. I guess that none of us will ever understand. As we approach the anniversary of this awful day, my hope is that our rememberance and recognition of the loss of this day and the global events since, does not reopen my students fears. With one more year of teaching under my belt, I feel no more prepared to answer thier questions than I did one year ago. I turned on the radio to jam out to my favorite music while doing my hair and makeup. It was just a regular day, or so I thought. After a song was over, commercials came on. So, I changed the channel. All there were, were people talking. As I was about to turn off my radio, I heard a radio announcer shockingly describing what had been reported. A plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I didn't stop my routine because I thought it was some kind of radio prank. I mean, of course, it had to be some kind of joke, right? Then, I could hear gasps in the background. The announcers became silent. They reported now that a second plane had flown into the second building. I could tell now that there was truth in their voices. I got shivers up and down my body. I then explained to my unknowing parents what was going on. We turned on the television only to find horrible footage of what had happened. I didn't want to go to school now. How could I learn when I knew everyone's mind was on this attack of our country. But, I had to go to school. When I got there, some kids didn't even know what was going on. Some were shaking in fear. Some didn't go to school because their family lived near the Trade Center. By this time, I had already seen enough horror. Then, in another class, I had learned that another crash had happened in the Pentagon. What was happening to our country? Pandemonium and fear was all we could allow. As we watched the surreal reports, there was a dead silence in the room. It was the first time all of us had experienced these feelings of compassion, empathy, and remorse at the same time. Even though we weren't at those bombing sites, we too felt what those families felt. I could see it in every students eyes. They all were in disbelief. Many were crying, many were talking frantically, and many were silent. This day will always live on in my memory when we all came together as one. When I first heard about it was on a break we got at 9:45am. I had gone out to my car and turned on the radio. Of course what I heard just overwhelmed me. All we could all do at work was talk about what had happened. At lunch time when it was being reported about the attack on the Pentagon and Flight 93, after hearing about it we were all in a state of shock. On a personal note I found out that a co-workers brother works in the Pentagon. I did a lot of praying that night. God Bless America. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My story occured several days after 9-11. We had our first scheduled AYSO soccer match since the tragedy. Our team assembled at the university soccer fields where several hundred other families were meeting to play. Saturday, was the first day that planes were being allowed to take off from our local airport, right next to the university soccer fields. We had just started to play when a loud noise erupted. We stopped and stared as a lone United Airlines jet was taking off, banking to the left, right over our heads. Every child on every field, stopped and looked. All of the adults stopped, everyone seemed to be holding their breath. What if anything would happen to this plane, were there more attacks to come? For what seemed like an eternity, several hundred of us just watched the plane until we could no longer see it. The look of fear on my child's face,the looks of aprehension and anticipation on each adult's face is something I will never forget. Then, each child turned their attention to their game and started to play. The apprehension and fear was replaced by sounds of laughter and resilience. That too I will never forget. Tell us your story: My son and myself were in our family room watching Fox News when the program was interuppted by the sight of Tower 1 in flames, we were immediatly at full attention praying that by the grace of God there were no deaths, then in horror we found ourselves in unison yelling at the people on TV to run and get out. It doesn't sound right but it was as though if we screamed loud enough the people would hear us. My son is only 26 yrs. old, myself I had witnessed President Kennedy's asassination,Dr. Kings, and Bobby Kennedy and yes Oswald's killing. I always thought those were the worst other than of course our boys in "Nam" that had to be left behind. I am not sure if I will ever forget the horror of 9-11-01 nothing I have witnessed had prepared me for that hour,day,endless sorrow that will always remain. I did discover later in the day that my husbands cousin was in Tower 2 and had left "2" as soon as "1" was hit so our family was blessed with his life. So murderous are these groups let us never forget that they will be back, I pray our government is ever deligent and on alert as these people will try,try again. Tell us your story: Even though my story might not be as tragic as actually being at the attacks, the events that happened on that day were very scary for me. For you see I lived in the city of Norfolk, Virginia: home of the biggest U.S. Naval Base, fear to be another potential target at that time..... First let me talk about September 10, the day before the attacks. Everything was normal. I moved from Michigan to Virginia to attend Johnson and Wales University, a culinary school. It was a different time, a different world, we all seemed so innocent. The World Trade Center was there, the Pentagon was intact and the field in Pennsylvania was bare. It is funny because I don't really remember what I did on September 10, I do know that New York and Washington D.C. was the farthest thing from my mind. But the world as we knew it changed at 8:46 a.m on Septembr 11, 2001. I got up at 6:00 a.m. because I missed school the day before and I wanted to get there extra early. I walked down to my friends room to see if he need a ride to school. We stepped out of our dorms into the warm summer morning. Everything was quiet, there was barely anybody on the streets. The morning radio barely had any news on it. But little did we know that in a few hours there would be nothing but news on. We arrived at school had lecture for about an hour and 45 minutes. Probably by the same moment we got done with lecture the first plane had crashed into the first building.... So we were dismissed for a 10 minute break and then we would go into production. It's funny because in the student union they have a television and I do not recall seeing anything about the attacks. I guess the news didn't hit airwaves yet. I think we were in production for about 15 - 20 minutes, I didn't see my chef instructor anywhere and I was wondering what he was doing. He walked in and announced the words I'll never forget "A plane just crashed into on of the towers at the World Trade Center". Personally I didn't really react as I should, first of all I thought he was talking about a one man plane and second of all weirder things have been known to go on in New York. My concern didn't raise until he revealed that it was indeed a commercial airline plane. But still I figured it gone off course or there was some reasonable explanation. So we half continued into production for a little while when my chef instructor walked into the kitchen again and said "the second tower just got hit". I was wondering what the heck was going on. Thoughts would come into my head. Who was there, what is your family doing, and other things. There was even one student who left school because both of his parents worked at the World Trade Center, I never knew who that student was nor did I hear anything else about the situation. By this time everybody was in a panic. Because news of the pentagon getting hit started floating in. That's when worry turned into fear. Like I stated before we were in the same city as the biggest Naval Base and by air we were only 15 minutes from D.C. So we continued to cook but I kept noticing some of the most important officials of our school gathering outside the kitchen. They were discussing something. Finally my instructor came in and said "how fast can you clean up? There are rumors of another plane floating around and they think the base is one of the targets." We cleaned up and got on the road. I turned on the radio as we got on the highway. There were miltary vehicles already on the roads. I remember because those were the first things that I saw. And that's when I heard, the first tower had collapsed. Me and my friend just looked at eachother. To get to our dorms we have to pass one of the entrances to the base. There were military personal stopping vehicles asking where you were going and why? The whole city of Norfolk shutted down. The radio kept announcing places that were closing and that all military personal are to report to base. As we got to the dorms there was campus police around. We were not allowed to leave the building. I went up to my room and called my family and then I went out to the lobby and that's when I heard that the second tower had collapsed. A few hours later the crash in the Pennsylvania field was reported. Like I said my story isn't the most tragic one but seeing those buildings going down and knowing that anything could have been the next target was enough to leave an imprint in my life and memory. Then immediately I thought of my brother who is in the army. I know that I haven't spoke to him in a while. GOD knows I didn't know where he was. So, I called my aunt and she reassured me everything was okay. So, honestly I was okay until I went home and actually watched the news. I wasn't a Christian at the time but I prayed and prayed. Even though I felt a sense of loss it still didn't affect me. So I went to church that Sunday. The preacher preached a good word but it still didn't affect me. Now that I am Christian when the anniversary came it was all to real. I know that GOD has took his protection off of America. He is still going to get the glory. We as Americans have to look at is we rejected GOD. He is no longer in our school systems. If you are caught praying you are in trouble. If pray to the muslims god and it is okay. So I just don't want GOD to be blame for this. Satan is very busy!! He worked in them hijackers, Bin Ladin, and anyone else that wants to kill innocent people. I still give GOD the Glory. I also prayed yesterday for the families. I know that they went to work that tragic day knowing that they were going to see their families and loved ones. Then the terrorist had another plan. I mean it really affected me the way it was suppose to affect me from day one. I don't want to downplay what the terrorist did but I just want it made known that GOD never left and he is still here. Like I said I prayed for the families and I prayed for the terrorist also because if they don't change their wicked ways. The repayment is deep. You reap what you sow. I really realized how much I loved my country. I am very much proud to be an American. That was the first thought I had when I saw the World Trade Center fall. The thought keeps coming to me over and over, like a small child, ?I wanna go home.? ?I want my Mommy.? But there?s reality. I am home and I am the Mommy. It's like I want that place of safety and innocence again...but it's forever gone. How I ache for the families who have lost their loved ones in this terrible atrocity against innocent people. I remember all through WWII that we were so proud that we kept the enemies of the world from landing here...from desecrating our soil. Now that's no longer true. I was recently in Hamburg, Germany and our tour guide said that 80% of it had been bombed out during WWII. There were only a few ancient monuments left. The WTC weren't ancient, but they were monuments of our strength and ingenuity that are gone forever. E-mails flooded my computer today saying ?Go out on your front porch and light a candle at 7:00 p.m. tonight to show the traitors of this world that we in America are united in our resolve to wipe out terrorism.? It was just dusky dark as I made my way out the front door and placed my big three-wick candle on the porch rail. I lit those three wicks and thought of the Holy Trinity as I did it. It caused me to pray for the families of the victims of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. I prayed for wisdom for President Bush and his cabinet. I thought, ?He?s too young a man to have this burden thrown on him.? I sighed and was happy that it did not happen on Bill Clinton?s watch. He?d probably been off playing with some young chick. ?Thank you, Lord, for choosing W. to lead our country through this mess.? Then I stepped out onto the circular driveway, crunching Torrey Pine needles as I walked, and looked up and down the street. There were no other candles flickering in the darkness. I was alone in performing this world-wide ritual of solidarity on Summit Avenue. Ours is an old neighborhood. Mostly retired people live here. Even a few homes are just vacation homes, used only in the summer months. Had these people seen too many wars? Had they cried too long over this disaster? Had the adrenalin coursed enough in their veins? Or, perhaps they didn?t have computers? Were they not told of this momentous event? As my thoughts raced on, suddenly out of the darkness across the street, there appeared five young people from the apartments in the back. They were laughing and chattering as they lit their candles waving them at passing cars. I waved to the young people but they never returned the wave or spoke to me. Then, just as quickly they blew out their candles and skipped back to their apartments chattering and laughing as they went. They had done their warm and fuzzy thing for America. This was their contribution to the war effort. Had their lives been changed by the experience? Not likely. They had grown up in a land flowing with mild and honey, of peace and prosperity. They did not have a clue what war was all about or what was expected of them. The old-timers of the neighborhood, who had not participated, knew only too well that lighting candles did not cut it. Many were Veterans of Foreign Wars. They had lived through WWI, a war that was to end all wars. They had survived the Great Depression and the dust bowl days of the Thirties and then WWII?another long war and many short wars after that. Some were declared wars. Some were not. They knew that rituals are just that?rituals. You don?t fight wars with warm fuzzy feelings. Wars are for killing and breaking things. All of us old-timers on Summit Avenue knew that there is much sacrifice involved when a war is fought. After our men served in WWII, then our children had to go fight more wars. Vietnam, Desert Storm. Some gave their lives. Tonight I was the only old-timer waving a flag and lighting a candle. Although I didn?t allow the ?super information highway? of the Internet to pass me by, I felt foolishly out of step this dark, starry night when this generation was out waving candles and doing their thing. All of a sudden the news breaks in that a plane hit The World Trade Center. I thought they were talking about a little Cessna or something like that. My husband's office is next to Dobblns Air Force Base...they all left and went to a friends house to watch television. I've been to the towers... in 1977 my Mom moved us back to the States after living in Puerto Rico for 10 years. We went to New York City to visit a friend and he took us there. I saw the planes crash into the world Trade Center and the Pentagon and realized we were at war. I also realized this war would be more destructive than any other war and that it will be on a American soil. It was also historic because innocent civilians were attacked. Has your life changed because of September 11,2002? if so tell us how. Yes it has changed, because I travel a lot. Twice a year I travel on air planes, therfore there is a a possibility of my plane being highjacked. Because we live in a city surrounded by the millatary and water, there is a possibility that terrorist would blow up one our tunnels or bridges. Living in this area makes us more us more of a target. I always think of this possibility. What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? After we were attacked, many Americans immediately wanted to help. We realized what heroes, the firefighers,police officers, and rescue people really are. Also construction workers and iron workers sifted through the rubble for months in order to give the dead a decent burial. Thousand of Americans linked up to give blood, food and suport to anyone that needed it. Americans came together as one united nation in a crisis. Like many others that day I called my mother from my cell phone to let her know I was okay and stayed on the phone with her for almost two hours of the whole event. She still had her loved one at the end of it all...many others around the country weren`t so lucky. It was the most traumatic event in my entire life. I will never forget the sights and sounds knowing all the people that died so horribly right before my eyes. I will never recover from the shock of running on the streets of NYC from the debris of a falling 110 story office tower. The sound of my mother screaming helplessly for me to run as she watched it live on TV from across the country is burned into my mind. I will always feel this guilt for escaping and surviving while those people had to go through that horror. On 7Sept2001 I had visited the observation deck on the roof of tower 2 and felt weak thinking about falling off that building. Then days later I stared up at those trapped people from the safety of the street as they were burning, falling and living my worst nightmare. It tears me apart inside. That day I don't remember what I was doing that day because it was so long ago. I carried on as usual getting to school at arounf 8"20 am, meeting my freinds in the school yard and discussing last nights television shows. Nothing out of the ordinary. It wasn't until my principal made that memorable announcement on the P.A that i began to realize this was not such an ordinary day after all. At 8:45 am on Tuesday September 11, the school announcements had just finsihed. I started shuffling through my books to prepare for my first subject of the day. Religion. Little did i know that at the same time, American Airlines flight was crashing into the north tower of the world trade centre in New York City. Later that day you heard that peaople thoght this crash was mearly and airplane accident, but at 9:03 am as we were proceding in out studies, a second plane, United Airlines flight 175 crashed into the south tower. Images of these planes crashing into these significant towers and bursting into flames will always be in my mind. Scenes of terrified people in the windows of the buildings and the despiration of those who chose to jump from floors high, make me feel sick to my stomach. By about 9:10 am most people realized that 2 planes crashing into the World Trade Centre Towerd like they did was not just a coincidence but something more. As I was wondering what new pieces my class would learn in instrumental music that year, at about 9:40 am American Airlines flight 77 crashed into a helicopter landing pad at the Pentagon, a well known nerve centre for the United States military located in Washington D.C., killing everyone on board. The news of terrorist attacks on one of the biggest countries in the world was begining to spread quickly. While i was chatting with my friends and watching the guys play basketball at 10:10 am, the south tower in New York plummeted to the ground and United Airlines flight 93 en route from Newark to San Francisco crashed into a feild in Jennerstown, Penn., which is about 20 km southeast of Pittsburgh, no survivors. Aboard this aircraft, the passengers knew they were being hijacked. They also knew of the tragic events in New York and Washington. A group of 3 passengers had the presence of mind and strength of spirit to contend with these hijackers inorder to prevent more attacks on their country. They probably thought that as long as they were going to die, they might as well save their country as well. Those brave men and women were hero's to think not of themselves but of all the other people the the United States. Mass hysteria, panic, devistation and ciaos were all apparent on the streets of New York City. Sights of people running from burning buildings crying and bleeding are hard to erase from my mind. Innocent citizens covered in ash and debris who witnessed this wretched attack was all i could think about for weeks. You saw and heard of about people giving thir time to help and volunteer with all that they could. Off duty doctors and nurses would come to what was later called Ground Zero. All arounf, strangers were helping strangers. The New York Firefighters, Police offices and Paramedics who pride themselves of being the greatest in the world were faced with a disaster never before imagined. From this tradgedy arose numerous heroic stories of firefighters in particular showing great acts of heroism. These men and womenput their own lives in danger to save the trapped and the helpless. It is the image of these fearless indivudials that have inspired me to think of all the good going on during this devestating tradgedy. Before September 11 the word terrorism was not a part of my vocabulary. I really didnt have a good idea of where Afganistan was and I had never heard of Osama Bin Laden but as the events of 9-11 unfolded i was becomming more aware of such things. Before September 11, i didnt think twice about getting on an airplane. It never orccured to me that those metal dectors that we go to before getting on a plane were for our safty. Now i am much more aware. Just as we have heard our parents and grandparents speek about where they were November 22, 1963 which was the day John F. Kennedy was shot or what they were doing when canada won the Canada vs. Russia summit series in 1972, i too will always remember that i was in the seconf week of grade 8 and st bonaventure school in toronto on a day that began as ordinary as any other but quickly changed to have some of the most significant days in american and world history.
