No one feared the delivery of mail. My qrandchildren in Israel know only Roll-down metal windows in their house, A bomb shelter room equipped with gas masks, their car windows - rock-proof plastic. This Hitler of 2001 scares most of America, much of the Western world. Does he taint our mail? Osama aims to purify the earth of infidels Walking in botanic gardens I hear military planes howl. Will jets ever sound innocent again? Osama has bulged our defense budgets, coiled the world economy. I want to run from New York City yet be near museums, poetry workshops, expansive parks, not too far from family. Osama's new Jonestown hosts a population in the millions. New York Times photos and captions form goose pimples on my skin, a fist of hate and fear inside my chest. Rehima holds and kisses her 3-year-old Osama and says, In the name of God, I will sacrifice my son. . . for all my six sons, I wanted them to be mujahadeen. . . . Jihad is when you are attacked, you attack back. This is God's wish. Shafia Salaam says, Non-muslims are our enemy according to the Koran, so Americans are our enemy. Now America's grown into a land of targets: the White Kouse, the New York Stock Exchange, nuclear power plants. As the Taliban desecrated Buddhist shrines, will they now seek to fell our sequoias, our Golden Gate and Brooklyn Bridges, the U.N., our Lady of the Harbor? Since the 1993 Twin Tower attack the USA has ostriched its stalwart self ito a sense of the almighty. We forgot, a squadron of mosquitoes can cause toxicity and death. How can we plug the matrix of Freedom's screens, now big enough to let horse flies in? When God is invoked I know it's time to hide. My flag is on display, my ears alert, yet my dreams are strafed. Fear and anger creep between morning glories, marigolds, and Mozart's notes as skies roar with F16's not heard before terrorists converted three of our planes to bombs. We cannot hide from those who have mere scraps of food and live in torn tents or shacks, whose pain and want can be honed to wrath, missiles against the wealthy. Tell us your story: At that time i was employed by an americam compagny in belgium, and it was about noon when we heard on the radio what happened, it started with the report of 1 plane flying into the wtc, the first opinions were that is was an accident, than we heard about the second, from that point on we were in schock, terrorist attacks ??? in america ?? we couldnt believe it . and again a special newsflash; "two more planes have crashed in the usa, one of them has destroyed the pentagon", from that point on all activity in the technical division (my section) stopped , and everyone was gathered around the radio, and by 4 o'clock when we went home, it was clear as glass that this was the worst thing that happened to the usa since world war2. at that time, we had a inspection from headquearters, and that man had to find out what happened trought the internet at our personnel offices, he went into shock, and had to be calmed down by a couple of employees, but the biggest problem was yet to come, getting the man in contact with his family in the states. all trans-atlantic lines where busy, finally , after about 2 hours of trying he got to speak to his family trough a private line of the us embassy. he had to remain in belgium for 2 weaks, but called his family twice a day to inform after the situation. on september 11, both the compagny and american flag were put up at the flagpost outisde the plant, one day later the security staff was doubled, and at night all gates were locked and checked every half hour; and 2 days later the flags were taken down because of threats towards the plantcoming from muslim comunities. 2 (muslim) employes were fired because of their way of thinking : on 12 september they claimed that the attacks were a good thing, they were overwhelmed with negative reactions from their collegues, and had to clarifie their words at the personal offices, and there they repeated their statement, which was sufficient for immediant termination of their contracts. when looking back on the whole situation, it still amazes me how a few sick minds, guided by a crazy man, can turn the world into chaos, and can kil thousand of people under the disguise of an "holy war". Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was fortunate. I was safe and sound in my office of about 35 people, well into working away at my desk. It was a picture perfect, "not a cloud in the sky" September day. A co-worker announced she had just heard on the radio that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center. Word was spreading rapidly throughout the office, some logging on to the internet to see what this could possibly be! Little did we know our lives and those of generations to come were forever changing, right then and there. The utter disbelief and helplessness was slowly seeping into our very souls. A burden to be carried forever. Questions to which there are no good answers to be asked over and over. We all convened to our conference room to watch the events unfold on television. Heads kept shaking in disbelief and tears were falling as the buildings collapsed, and with the news about the Pentagon and Pennsylvania. It was all becoming quite surreal. None of us could work. The phones stopped ringing. We closed the office early and went home. Thankfully, none of us were touched in any direct way by loss of a loved one. But as the days passed, stories unfolded of friends of friends, and so on. The investment firm Morgan Stanley Dean Witter has an office in our building. We learned of their loss. I remember I was glued to my TV for days! Not wanting to watch, but driven to learn as much as I could, and to feel it. The pain had to be felt. The tears had to be shed for a bit. It's the only way to get past it and move on. We were all watching the smoke continue to rise from Ground Zero -as it was now called- for weeks. I was feeling secretly guilty for not being there to help sift through the rubble. Wanting to reach out my hand and my heart to all the police and firefighters and all those looking for signs of life, and eventually just hoping to find a body or a piece of one to return to loved ones for proper burial. They were enduring unbearable conditions and extreme emotional pain. But I wished I were one of them. I don't think that the perpetrators of these acts had any idea how strong this country would come together. They don't have a clue as to what this country is all about. I would endure any amount of hardship to show them they can't put us down! Most people I know were glued to their TVs,radios, and newspapers too. We couldn't get enough because we were trying to understand. The airwaves were full of talk for weeks, months. There wasn't a radio talk show in the country that didn't cover this day in and day out. I began imagining so many horrors and started feeling a little paranoid. It was hard to sleep sometimes. But eventually, perhaps as each "uneventful" day passed, I began to worry less. I also decided not to worry about those things over which I have absolutely no control. What will be will be. I remember also that I was so sorry my 82 year old mother had to live through this. I was sorry that she would have to live with this sadness for the rest of her life. That she would have to imagine a world that wasn't safe for her grand children and great grand children. It wasn't fair for her to have to be so disheartened. So we all know the rest of the story. It's ongoing. A story to which we all fantasize about a happy ending. So we go on. We keep our routines. We go to work. We go on vacation. We buy a home. We struggle to keep the economy strong. We support our President and pray for him to be a wise leader. We keep on smiling, decide what is really important in our lives and just go live them. BELIEVE in the power of prayer! God bless us all. Tell us your story: I remember it being sometime in the early hours of the morning, because i remember my mother coming into my room and trying to wake me up, but i must have been out cold. Then i got up to go to school that morning to find my family all watching the tv. My mum just turned to me and said "trade towers.....gone" i was just like ....what?? and then i watched all the coverage on the television, and remember being shocked and feeling as if i was still dreaming. My mum was crying and i started crying, even though i dont know any of the people who were victims i was still so shocked and disturbed by what happened. I went to school and it was strange. It was very quiet, everyone was just distraught. All we did was watch the coverage of what had happened. We had 2 minutes silence some time during the day and it was just so strange because knew what to say to eachother. Almost everyone was crying and we planned to hold a service. I was asked to write a song. So i went home and wrote a song about new york and these poor people who fell victim to these unbelievable attacks. Here is what i wrote: CITY UNDER SIEGE: an axis of the world brought to its bloody knees as bodies rain down, the streets of new york city. A man on a highjacked plane rang his wife and said: "honey in case i dont see you again, i love you....i love you". The choking air, a man stumbles away, an officer helps the wounded, theres terror in their faces, theres terror in their eyes..... the streets are full of crying, the people are like ghosts as fear grips this city under siege. balls of fire the cities up in smoke, the world unites on these evil acts of carnage 10,000 men and women dead as the jets hit the world trade centre. the world stops to reflect- on this lack- lack of humanity... and we all ask why? the streets are full of crying the poeple are like ghosts as fear grips this city under siege. I usually get up at 6 a.m. to get ready for work. Instead, I awoke about 5:30 and couldn't get rid of the nagging feeling that I had to get up-NOW! So, I did. I stumbled to the kitchen, nuked a cup of coffee and sat down to read my email. Minutes into it, my sister IM'd me (she doesn't get up til 7! Noon on weekends!), "OMG, I can't believe what is happening. A horrible accident! Are you watching TV?" I turned the tv on just in time to see the second plane hit the second tower. Horrified, I sat on my sofa for the next two days. I believe I ate during that time, not sure. But I was transfixed and unable to move. I did have an overwhelming urge to gather my kids and grands around me, though. I am blessed to work for a company that cares. And what I've learned over the last twelve months is how very blessed I am in every way. The struggles of the last few years, my normal life, is suddenly a very contented place. The day is now referred to as one of the most tragic days, also known as 9/11. The day when the Twin Towers went down and thousands of people died. When I first heard the news, I was sitting in third period gym and was talking to my friend Nicole. We were having our pictures taken for the yearbook and our identification cards. All of the sudden we heard over the loud speaker that an airplane had crashed into one of the world trade centers. We were told that there is nothing to worry about and that we were perfectly safe. About five minutes later I was called to the office. As I walked down the hallway to the office I noticed my mom was standing out side the office door. She said that she was scared and did not know what to do. She also said that she had known clue what was going on and that she wanted me out of school for the day. So we went to my dad?s store were we saw on the news that another plane had crashed into the other tower. Then suddenly we witnessed the towers crumble completely to the ground. There was nothing left to them. My mom then said, ? This is a day that none of us will ever forget.? After that my mom and I went to go and get my aunt and my cousins from their house in Belvidere. We went to get them and my aunt was really scared because her boyfriend was working right across the street from the World Trade Center. My friend was also working there. So we went back to my house and we were watching the news. We were trying to call them on there cell phones and we could not get through because to many people were trying to call out on cell phones at one time and a lot of phones would not work. We finally heard from them at around one in the morning the next day. They said that their phones wouldn?t dial out and that they were okay. That was my tragic day of 9/11. It was a horrible day that I will never forget. Thousands of people died that day. My family was lucky but many others were not so lucky. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On 9-11-2001 I was at work in Buckhead. It was my 1st Anniversary at the job I love doing. I heard a co-worker say that one of the World Trade Buildings had been hit by a plane. I was in total disbelief. I immediately thought about my sister Letty who works for the NYNJ Port Authority in the North Tower on the 71st floor. I tried calling her work number. I do not know why but I did. I prayed to God that Emily my niece, who had just started school had made her late for work. Emily was having a hard time adjusting to school. I recall someone turning on the television, and everyone ran over to see what was being broadcasted. I continued to call my sister's work and home number. I could not work nor function. I remember looking at the t.v., and some stated that a second airplane had struck the south tower. I felt so numb. Our manager instructed us to go home. I remember walking to my vehicle and tunning in to a radio station to hear the news. As I drove home I recall getting choked up not knowing if my sister was as work. I remember hearing a song by Jeff Majors titled Psalm 23. That song gave me hope and strength to go on. I finally pulled into my driveway, I went upstairs and turned on my television. I remember as if it were yesterday, the buildings collapsed, and I feel to my knees in tears thinking the worst had happened to Letty. I cried so much. I continued to call NY in hopes that I could make contact with someone to find out about Letty but I had no luck. My husband arrived home with the boys. He went to the school and picked them up, not knowing where the next attacks might strike. I was glued to the t.v., as were millions of people. My husband continued to reassure me that Letty was fine, but I had to speak to her in order to know that she was safe. Finally around 7:30 p.m., I was able to reach her home number. Anthony answered the phone and I asked him was Letty fine. He said yes, I recall tears running down my face, and when I heard her voice, I was so overwhelmed with joy and sadness at the same time. She cryed and told me her horrific experience. Thank God, Emily made mommy late for work. My sister had dropped Emily off at school and realized that she had forgotten her lunch bag, so she went home to get the lunch bag, take it to Emily's school, and then she caught the ferry over to work. As she arrived she was headed towards her job, when all of a sudden she saw one airplane in the north tower and the other one was coming. She recalls some gentleman grabbing her hand and running for dear life, she said it was dark, and debris falling all over. Letty is an asthmatic, so she was trying to the best she could. She said she lost her shoes in the run for her life, and received a few cuts and bruises. She was taken to a decontamination area, luckily her boss was there and hugged her and was happy to see her. Unfortunately, my sister had the emergency contact list at home and her manager asked her if she would call the names on the list to see if family members had heard from their love ones. I am one of the lucky ones who still has my best friend and sister with me today. My sympathy goes out to all those people who were not as fortunate as I am. When Letty hears a plane now she panics and has horrible visions of that day. The tragedy will forever be with her. Hopefully within time she will try to deal with this tragedy the best way possible. May God Bless everyone and help us all deal with this senseless tragedy. I even remember what outfit I wore because it was brand new and I was so excited to wear it school that day. I was eleven years old and in sixth grade at Poe Middle School. Everything started out a normal day. But by my second class, a lot of people were getting picked up early from school and everyine was so confused because we had no idea what was going on. None of the teachers were telling anyone anything. I knew something had to be up right before lunch because I was supposed to go to uncle's house after school but I got called down to the main office where they said my mom had called and wanted me to come straight home at the end of the day. When I asked the woman in the main office if my mom gave a reason, she just said, "Well there has been some accidents in New York and that may have something to do with it." Now I was more confused than ever because when she said "accidents," the first thing that popped in my head was car accidents and I was so confused as to what car accidents in New York had to do with me and why it was important. When I got home from school that day, still not knowing anything about what had happened, I noticed my mom's car in the driveway which was strange because normally she wasn'y home from work until around five. She opened the door when she saw me coming up the porch and I noticed her face looked kind of red, like she'd been crying. I barely asked, "What's going on?" before she led me in the house and to the TV, which was repeating for the millionth time that day what had happened. I was in complete shock. Now, five years later, I can't say my life has been seriously affected by what happened that day. But there have been some changes. Ever since I've been a lot more interested in the news and national and international affairs. I've been a lot more politically inclined as well. But one of the most noticeable changes is security. Now when I go into DC, there are security checks before entering museums, creating long lines. And just this past summer, when I was visiting my grandmother in Florida, at the airport I had to take off my shoes, necklace, watch, bracelets, and before I could go through the metal detector. However, one thing I stand strong to about September 11 is this: it should not keep people from living their lives to the fullest. It should not be an excuse from the government to take away American's liberties. And it should not be exploited by the media. Of course, all these things have happened anyway, and THAT is what I find the saddest. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I woke up at 7:30 in the morning to attend a math class at college. Since I lived in the dormitory, I just walked over to the classroom. By the time the first attack hit, I was still in class. After class, I went to bed for a nap, setting the alarm for 10:15. When I woke up after the nap, I got my rollerblades and books together to go to an off-campus class. To this point, I did not turn on the tv or radio. I got to the bottom floor of the building, and went into the college bookstore. The BookStore radio had Howard Stern on and they were going to a live report that the Trade Center was hit. I said aloud and thought that it was a cleverly disguised hoax, since I just studied "The War Of The Worlds" hoax in one of my classes. I purchased a sports drink and started to skate toward the off-campus class. There was no panic in the streets that I noticed, and I had to dodge the usual cars. I arrived at 10:55, took off my skates and went inside. I waited in the lobby, and the secretary said "Did you hear what happened?" I said "You're listening to Howard Stern, aren't you?" "No..I'm listening to KQV" First thought was, "Oh my God..it isn't a hoax!" A sign was then posted saying "Class Cancelled. Return to Campus for Further Instructions." I stayed there about half an hour to make sure the other classmates heard about it. Tim, my classmate, rolled up on a scooter, and I said "Class has been canned. Have you heard what happened?" "Yeah. They say there's a plane in Pittsburgh too." I thought again, "Oh my God" and took off quickly for the campus. This time there was more of a sense of panic and confusion in the street. And at every stop, I asked someone, "Hey, can you turn up your radio? What is the latest news?" and other phrases. I don't remember even taking my skates off when I got back. I went to the dorm room and immediately tried to call my mom and dad. It took me a while to get through. When I did, they said they were just closing the store and I went online to try and contact other family members and other friends. I was very frightened, crying, and I wanted to go home. I was then told that if we wanted to get out of the city, I could go home with one of the professors. I decided to stay in the city, and I just remember being glued to the computer, updating news sites, watching news channels, I just stayed up all night long watching the news. The next time I slept was about 3:00 in the morning. Hopefully this will be useful or interesting to someone. I didn't lose a loved one. I had a friend who had a close call. The first part below is her story. Instead of going home to New Jersey, she stayed at Battery Park City (next door to the WTC) at a friend's house because she was going to see me that day. She called me as I was going out the door to ask if we were still meeting later, and, had I seen the news? She said it was on tv but she had just heard and seen a plane go right overhead into the Trade Center. She nervously discussed with me whether she should leave and get a bus. I told her I didn't think there would be busses but to get out of there, pick a direction and just get away from it. She said she was going to walk towards the river. I said no no! Thinking she'd be trapped there. It turned out exactly the right way for her to go. She called me back, still in the building about 5 minutes later saying they had been told now to evacuate. I didn't hear from her again that day and I was sure by the timing of the phone calls that she'd been out in the street at the time the first tower went down. I reasoned she only had my place left as a place to go for the night (since no one was leaving Manhattan) and when she didn't show up I was very worried. (no phone service in Manhattan) I was able to reach upstate New York by phone and Boston could call in to me (on my land line) I reached my friend's husband by phone (finally) the next day. She was home! She told me I wouldn't have wanted to see what was happening in the street at the base of Number One. She said she joined a group who was running and they were in the midst of everything coming down on them. She watched a woman with a baby carriage running with everyone and later saw the carriage empty. She hoped that had meant the woman picked up the baby to continue running. Their particular crowd ran until trapped against a high wall. But two men in the crowd broke a restaurant window and took out chairs that they piled up to the wall and helped everyone over. Just as they all got over and fell onto grass on the other side, the black cloud came. She said everything went dark and she couldn't breath. She said finally she pulled her shirt up over her face and her mouth was full of dust. In the dark she fumbled in her purse and put her ID into her pants pocket so her children would know what happened to her. But she said, then, the air cleared, especially because they were West of the wind blowing the smoke. Everyone in the now grey grass got up and bolted for the river. It just happened a fire boat was coming by. There was nothing else there but water. She said the group started jumping over the wall into the boat. She said people were hurting themselves in the jump, but she jumped in also. She was afraid the firemen would make them get back out but instead it immediately hauled them across to New Jersey. She said she waited many hours and then she had trouble breathing so she was taken to a hospital. They took all her clothes and gave her new ones and had her scrub thoroughly. Earlier, I stayed on the upper east side, I went outside and saw throngs of people silently marching up Third Avenue, (in the East 80s) having left their mid town and down town jobs. I was still at the stage where this all felt like a virtual reality movie. There was zero traffic (that only occurs on Third Avenue on its noise street fair day) The people in this procession were saying very little. So it was an eerily quiet march, all to the north, broken by the sound of fighter jets going over. This parade went on until about 2 PM. In the meantime I went to a grocery store (I, like many in NY keep no actual food in the tiny kitchen. We eat out. Why we got food? I did to squirrel it away if we got stuck in Manhattan. I suppose we thought this would be a long siege.) The customers in the store had already half emptied all the shelves. It was a very quiet and understated panic. People were polite and patient, even in their desire to stock up for "a year", it seemed. Also the lines for the check out were taking up to an hour and 45 minutes, so everyone standing there decided to shop even more as they stood next to the shelves. Huge baskets were winding all the way through the market. One woman I actually knew was hussled to the front of the line because she had left 2 small children in her apartment upstairs, having come down for some quick basic supplies. Finally, the store procured from who-knows-where some of the best check out people I've ever seen. I wondered if they were trained for emergency check out, maybe Reserves?, because they ran the cash registers faster than any I'd ever seen. Finally after 2.5 hours I was out of there. Then, that night, what did everyone do? Instead of cooking all that in apartments, everyone went to the restaurants. They were packed. Every outdoor caf? was seating to the brim. The weather, as you recall, was beautiful. Again, it was a different sort of experience, because there was still no traffic on First and Second Avenue. And people were kind and speaking to strangers and gathering a little. People in the law office where I work lost colleagues and family members. Some lost people on the planes. I went to work Wednesday, because I could easily walk the mile or so. There still was no public transportation. People were making every effort to keep things going as usual, but it was more like a Saturday, with very few people at work, as was the case in the city as a whole. That day and the next there were many bomb threats and various scares. And a kind of glumness. On Thursday around noon, I looked down from high windows in the office and saw a throng heading up Third Avenue (again?). Apparently Grand Central had had a scare. That was the state of things for a while. Our offices, like many mid-town businesses, immediately opened conference rooms and extra spaces to temporarily provide offices for those misplaced. For really only a very short time we had these filled with some of the lucky folks. I was impressed with how quickly new permanent places were found or provided. I was also impressed with how the court system dealt with having to be closed. Letters were sent by e-mail amending statutes of limitation and with updates on how to work with court opening delays. Smooth as possible. Many brought in, or printed off line images and sentiments of the WTC all posted, and we all had better, brigher label ribbons every day it seemed. Then the pins with the flags. That lasted quite a while. A couple months. To calm the daily dread, I finally made my own survival packs which I still have. One for my car. One for the office, etc. After I made them I felt like a weight lifted off of me. It was an action, I suppose. Something so few of us could figure out to do. Later, our office supplied small survival packs to every person. Over all of this was our view of the the huge cloud of smoke to the south, as everyone could see on TV. Eventually I made my way by subway down to pay my respects, two weeks late, early, before work. I felt compelled to be there. The people going to their jobs down there (that I saw), almost to the person, walked along avoiding looking in the direction of the disaster. There were few smiles. And I was glad I went. It helped take away the virtual movie feeling because there it was, undeniably. The now famous fa?ade was lit by gold sunrise that day. The site was the embodiment of some huge wrath. I was INside of wal*mart building a cake display for our line of hostess cakes. about 9 am, the pepsi man comes in and says, someone just drove a 747 jet plane in the side of the world trade center. It was the end of first block when the first plans hit the trade center. I knew something was wrong when we had spent 30 minutes too long in the class and they would not let up leave. I was in the main gym and they called over the intercom system that there have been attacks on the world trades center and the pentogon. This sent most into a panic becase they did not say how bad the pentogon was hit and many parents of students worked at the pentogon. After the anouncement they let us go to our next class but many left early fearing there could be more attacks. There was alot of people crying becase they were afraid a loved one could be in danger. My life was directly effected by the attack on the pentogon. I lost a neighbor who lived only two houses away. We stared to worry about him when he did not come home that night but we figured he stayed to help those in the reckage because that was the kind of guy he was. After a few days we heared that he was declared missing. His body is one of 5 from the pentogon who was never found. these attacks dont compare to anything elese in history. some compare it to pearl harbor but this was much worse the people at pearl harbor in the armed forces and could somewhat defend themselves. He can't work my TV so he got me up, he was nearly hysterical. As I got the TV running, the second plane hit the second tower behind Katie Couric and it went down. Couric did not even know it had happened. I went to work, I am the secretary at an independent insurance claims adjustment firm and other people's problems continue. The owner showed up. None of the adjuster's came to work. One didn't show for 6 working days. No claimants called until late that afternoon. Those calls were rational and to the point, not a normal type of call. Calls often run on forever, are illogical, or rush over minor issues or issues that can't be rushed such as drying the water. It was 3 days before I received a rush call, that lady needed her car to get to work. Calls picked up and became more rambling, rushed or pointless over time. I did not receive an angry call for no reason at all until July, 2002. This includes a team working the Rodeo-Cibeque fire in Northern Arizona. I had just started watching when the second plane hit. I just started shakeing and I told my mother that wasn't an accident. I was scared. Scared for those people in the towers and the planes. And feeling deep sorrow for their families. I prayed that they were not alone. The only thing I could think of was getting my brother on the phone. It touchs me deep in the soul for the policeman, fireman, and other rescue workers there that fateful day. I pray for those we lost and for those who lost someone that day. But I do not fear that they were alone. The same person that held me up when I saw those planes hit and held the hand of our heros loved ones, is the same person that led his flock home. Tell us your story: I was in my bedroom sleeping and waiting for my cleaning lady to arrive at 8:30 a.m. When she came in crying, and said, I was just talking with my husband,Robin on the cell phone,who works on Spring st in the city. She said, Put the television on,Marie, Robin said, an airplane hit the WTC buildings. She was surprised, I didn't have the television on like I uselessly did when she arrived every morning. We were both in shock, when we put the television on and saw the building on fire. When,we saw the second,building get hit, we burst into tears, crying, O my GOD !! She was very upset, and I try to calm her down. She is from Guyana,age 21, in this country,only one year. A newlywed, She said, Robin cousin works in the WTC, on the 102 floor,in the cafteria. I'm sorry, Marie, but, I must leave and get down to Spring street where my husband is. She ran, out of my apartment, crying and heistally. I'II call you when I get to Robin. She almost made it to Spring st,when all subway services was halted. She had to walk about ten blocks to Spring st,she didn't know her way there,she ask people on the street for help.
