It was my 27th birthday and I had found out just 6 days before that I was finaly pregnant with the child I had tried for nearly a year to conceive. I woke up feeling great and stopped to pick up some treats for my coworkers to celebrate my birthday. I was in the breakroom reading a book, waiting for my shift to start when someone popped in and told me that two planes had just flown in to the World Trade Center. I said, "Two? How did that happen?" He replied, "It wasn't an accident." The rest of the day was spent with the TV on in our library's lobby. For many patrons, coming in to the library was the first they heard of the tragedy. Some simple stood and watched. Some hopped on the internet to see what else they could learn. Many talked, some sad, some angry, all hurt and confused. It was a long day. For me, I was torn. Part of me was mad that such a thing could happen, let alone on my birthday. Part of me wondered just what kind of world I was bringing a child in to. Part of me was comforted by the knowledge that even as so many lives were lost, a new one was growing inside of me. In a way, I was already healing. Later, when I heard of all the pregnant wives of men lost in the attack, I wondered if their babies gave them strength to carry on, or were a constant reminder of what they'd lost. Now, a year later, as I turn 28, I look at my beautiful, healthy, happy 4 month old boy, and I know that life does indeed go on. I also realize just how blessed I am, and I thank God for all he has given me and this wonderful nation we live in. People now think of the people that were horribly killed during the incident. Almost everyone was changed after the Twin Towers collapsed, including me. I now think of the people who lost their lives, and feel hatred for the people who did this. I take more time to watch what I say. I also appreciate my friends and family because they might not have been here the next day. I am so thankful that they are still here. My friends were just as affected as me. They are thankful for their lives and fell sorrow for the dead. But some of my friends are still felling the pain over this incident, and others put it in the past but still think about it once every so often. I think my generation will be changed forever. We will have to live with the grief of this event forever. People that did not see it will not have the same feelings about it but will still learn about it. I do not think that we the people will ever forget this. So in the end I think everyone was affected, one way or another. Now people are starting to move on, but will never forget about this tragic event. I know I never will forget it because of all the trauma, on 9/11. We have access to CNN so we went to look and it was like watching a movie, showing the first tower being hit. Then the 2nd plane came and we all just looked in disbelief, I don't think any of us thought it was real. The base called there threatcon and at that point all the reality hit. We at that point had no access outside, everything was locked down. I really remember the Airman who had family that worked at the towers or lived near them and could not make contact with them. They were crying in disbelief just not knowing if the people they knew were there that day, and then the Red Cross started calling with good and bad news. They sent several people home to pack because at that point it was decided we were going to support the operation. No one knew were they were going or for how long or if they would be back. That was also the day we started 12 hour shifts and learned at that point stop loss was going to take effect. That meant those of us who had served there time and there contract was up could not seperate from the Air Force. It was a devistating time for everyone and I just wanted to be home with all my family, just to know that they were safe and couldn't be. He and his family worked hard, he eventually married and enlisted during World War II. He had passed away 10 years before the attack on 9/11/01, but his love and respect for our nation never waivered and he had passed those feelings along to my sister and I. When the attacks came, my feelings were those of disbelief and sickness. When I came home from work, our flag was put out and stayed there lit for weeks. I still feel moments of great sadness that this could happen on our home soil, but we, as a nation of immigrants, still feel an overwhelming pride in the fact we do stand tall and will face any adversity as it comes. I had to have my office open by 9:00 a.m. I have a television in my office and after I turned my computer on I flipped on the television. The first thing I saw was the first tower on fire. I thought it was some movie until I turned the sound up and realized this was real. As I watched in utter disbelief the second tower was it. I think I was numb for a few minutes and then the tears came along with anger. I watched with so many emotions going on all at once. I prayed with our nation for the lives of those in the towers and wanted to wrap my arms around the babies that would not see their mom or dad again. I felt great pride in the courage of this nation as we pitched in to help. I thought of my history lessons taught so many years before about strength and courage and heorism and knew that I was seeing first hand these things we were told about when our country fought for its freedom. I was reminded of the assasination of President Kennedy and how someone wanted our nation to crumble, but our great sorrow only made us stronger then as it is now. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was a junior at Providence College but my home is Brentwood, Long Island. My first class on Tuesdays was Histology at 9:30. Since it was only the second week of school, I was still getting up early and watching the news before class. On the morning of the 11th, I had gotten distracted by a news story online - U2 had announced that tickets for their fall US tour were going on sale that Saturday. I was searching the internet, trying to find out what time the tickets were going on sale when my brother imed me with simply "Did you hear?" My brother being a U2 fan also, I thought he was maybe referring to that. Then he imed me "Two planes just hit the twin towers." I ran into my living room, put on the tv and just stared in utter and complete shock. I tried calling home but all the lines to NY were busy. It wasn't until close to noon that I was able to get through (a cousin came online and I had him call my dad and had my dad call me in RI). My dad used to work across the street from the towers, I grew up going to the 60th floor of 1 Chase Manhattan Plaza and getting a sense that I could almost touch the buildings. He said to me, "Tara, I have two pieces of bad news for you. Mark Rosen is missing and so is Danny's dad." Mark worked for Sandler O'Neil on the 104th floor of the south tower. 65 other employees of Sandler O'Neil died that September morning. Danny's father is a NYC firefighter who was never actually missing, just couldn't get in touch with home after the towers collapsed. The next few days were just so hard. I brought my cell phone to every class, had it right out on my desk, waiting for the miracle phone call that Mark was found. The call never came. I was a eucharistic minister at Mark Rosen's memorial service at home on Long Island on September 28th. His wife Patti spoke, his daughter Amanda read a poem. It was beautiful. One year later, is it really one year later? The pain is so strong, but I didn't cry yesterday. I had cried so much this past year, there didn't seem to be any tears left for me. There's a beautiful quote from President Bush that he said on the 3 month anniversary of the attacks: "For those of us who lived through these events, the only marker we'll ever need is the tick of a clock on the 46th minute on the 8th hour of the 11th day. We'll remember where we were and how we felt. We'll remember the dead and what we owe them. We'll remember what we lost and what we found." To the 2,801 victims of the Twin Towers, the 40 victims of Flight 93, and the over 180 victims at the Pentagon, your candle has burnt out long before your legend ever will. So, when I arrived at home I tuned in to the television and saw it for the first time. I watched as the towers fell that morning, plus the reinactment of the planes going in the towers. Tell us your story: I almost didn't write this because I thought to myself, who am I to add such a trivial story to others who had been right there? Who lost someone? Or injured themselves? Who am I? But, I read one story from Georgia, far enough away and realized that despite the distance, I am an American and a soldier in the United States Army. I, too, was deeply affected by the tragical events because I love my country and don't want to see anyone in it hurt. On that sad and extremely vunerable morning, I awoke without any knowledge of what was going on. I lay in my bed, not wanting to get up. After our pt session, I was tired and feeling a bit lazy. But, time waited for no one. Especially not me. I got dressed and went outside to find our parking lots practically deserted which was unusual, because parking was limited and on a normal day, any occupant would've had to fight for one. Not on the morning of 9/11. I also took note of the orange cones blocking the entrances/exits and the soldiers in kevlar and lbe's armed with M16s standing guard beside them. I felt something tighten in my chest as I began to grow increasingly confused. What happened, I begin to finally wonder. I didn't have cable and couldn't get a good hip hop station in rural Ft. Huachuca, so I almost never listened to my stereo, except for cds. That was my first regret. I watched as the guards turned a car away that had been trying to enter and the driver got mad at them. I watched the incident in a daze then returned to my room to call my friend and let him know that my car was trapped so I couldn't get to work and could he please pick me up. Then, I asked what was going on and due to his astonishment, he replied in anger. "You don't know?!" "Apparently not or I wouldn't have asked," I snapped back. Why couldn't he just answer me? "The Twin Towers were hit?" My heart jumped because I knew it was something bad, but how bad, I didn't know. "What? What are those? Hit with what?" The questions came all at once. What was going on and I felt lost. I knew that I had no control and neither did anyone else. I heard his deep sigh of disbelief. "You don't know what the Twin Towers are? God!" Then, he told me. Then, I felt myself growing angrier by the moment. I just wanted my questions answered and now! "It's not my fault that I'm not from New York! Why should I know what they are?!" And I hung up on him, knowing that I wasn't going to get anywhere with him or his attitude. I went to my car and drove to the exit. The guard let me out with a little wave and I drove to my office at Greely Hall, the second biggest building in the U.S. Government, I was once told. "Mini Pentagon", the girl had told me. The back exit was blocked off with a high fence and no one was in the front parking lot. I did a u-turn in the street and headed to DENTAC, my original unit. When I arrived, they let me in. No one else was there but military. I didn't ask too many questions since I should already have known everything but I was arriving late too work. The lobby's t.v. was on and I fell into a seat and didn't move for hours, mesmerized by what was happening. Then, it dawned on me a little while after finding out about the Pentagon that my family was close by in Manassas, VA. I begin to worry about everyone that I could think of that might have been involved. My sister, who was also in the Army, overseas in Italy; my parents and my Mom's boyfriend, who all worked near airports or D.C. I began frantically making phone calls but couldn't get in touch with my parents or my little brother. My sister didn't answer her home phone either and I sat back down in my same seat, in a daze. My NCO's begin joking with me because I couldn't move from the screen. I was devastated that we could actually be attacked by anyone. We were the United States of America. How dare anyone do this to us? I hated every foreigner and wanted to know why they hated us so much. I wanted to retaliate. When I finally got through to my dad, he said that he wanted to come back in over this and he later sent me an email about trading in his suit and tie for the Army greens. I was a true military brat as well as a soldier. Both of my parents had served in the Army as well as my aunt, uncle, sister and my cousin who was stationed in Maryland. Throughout everything, I forgot that I was supposed to get pinned that day too. I was getting promoted to Private First Class(PFC). But, like so many other planned things, it didn't happen. My country got a wake up call but I'm sad to say that not much has changed and I wasn't very affected physically besides the fact that I had to park a good half mile from my barracks, had to pull guard duty 24-7 around the clinic and didn't get promoted on the planned date. Alot of soldiers that I am stationed with, though, started deploying out and the fort began to look empty. I was sad for them but proud that we were doing something. Now, it's September 10, 2002, a year later and it feels like 9/11 occurred just yesterday. I'll pray tonite that nothing will happen and if the terroists try, that we'll be ready for them because we won't stand down. And hope, maybe, that i'll get promoted on time this time around. Tell us your story: Justin Tokotch per.5 5/23/02 9/11 The Day America Went Into Shock I was in school in Miss Kersch's room third period working on science when I saw the replay of the first jumbo jet hitting the World Trade Center tower. I then saw the second tower get hit by another jumbo jet. The Pentagon was hit about 20 minutes after the second tower was hit. I saw people running from the Pentagon plus the World Trade Center and the people were screaming. There was fire coming out of the buildings. I saw people jumping out of the buildings. A cloud of smoke came up and when the cloud cleared the people where shocked that one of the Twin Tower's was no longer standing in the sky. The tower landed on the ground in a pile of rubble. It shocked the nation that the Twin Tower's were gone. I was shocked that the Twin Towers were gone. There were a lot of people that died in that fatal attack that the terrorist groups organized. Many innocent people lost their lives September 11th, 2001. Our economy was hurt after the attack too. After a few weeks people where still in shock. For a while some students did not come to school after that. September 11th did not bother me that much because I did not know any one that died. To a lot people September 11th meant a great deal too. I feel very sorry for the friends and family that lost people in that fatal attack. People said that we should kill the people that did it to us. It is not right that this happened to us. I heard people ask if the Somerset Power Plant was going to get hit. I heard people ask if Niagara Falls was going to get hit. I reacted by telling people that we should blow up all of Afghanistan when I heard that the Taliban was behind the attack on the Twin Towers. Many people agree with me. President Bush sent over some of the Army and Navy to take care of the Taliban. The Taliban is a group of people that are associated with Osama bin Laden. When I heard that the United State was going into war I thought that it would go on for a long time. The terrorist attack did not affect me much, because I did not know anyone that was killed in that fatal attack. Getting my daughter ready for school. As we were getting into the our van and backing out my daughter was talking a mile a minute like every morning. I will never forget what I said to her, I was listening to our local radio station and half listen to my daughter. My parents are not far from the Pentagon attack and two of the planes that were said to be hijacked and used for these terrorist attacks left from Boston. This is too close, too close. When I drove home from work the evening of the explosion, it seemed that New Hampshire was asleep. It was so quiet and the roads were deserted. Solemn. Everyone was at home waiting for more news, hoping against hope that by some miracle, there would be survivors of the explosion. People needed to be home to hold their kids and spouses. It strikes me that no matter how often or to who the question is posed, ?What are the casualties??, no one can bear to even speculate an answer. The enormity of the destruction can?t even be imagined at this point. It?s too raw to presume the number of dead. Several thousand, no doubt. The dust has not even settled. It will probably be weeks before a number is confirmed. As people are expected home tonight, tomorrow, and the next day-- and they don?t come-- the death toll will steadily rise. The precision at which the 3 out of 4 planes hit their targets was too exact. I wonder if that means the terrorist pilots who may have taken over the controls were highly trained. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001, I was in Sioux Center, Iowa, experiencing my sophomore year of college. My home is actually Worthington, Minnesota. My first class on Tuesdays was at 1:35 pm (2:35pm ET). I woke up at about 12:30 pm (1:30 pm ET) or so. I didn't turn on a TV or anything and had NO IDEA what had happened earlier that day. As I walked to class, I saw several students gathered around the flag pole praying. The flag was at half-mast. I figured someone important had probably died or it was a rememberance day that I wasn't aware of. Didn't think much more of it. I continued on into class like nothing was wrong. My professor began class with mentioning something about "a dark day in our nation's history." I leaned over to the guy next to me and asked him what the professor was talking about. The guy laughed at me and said I was dumb for not knowing. In fact, no one around me would tell me what was going on. So I actually just raised my hand and asked! It was shocking to hear that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. But that's all I was told at that point. It wasn't until later that night that I and everyone else in the Midwest actually learned exactly what had happened. Between teaching and attending classes all day, no one in the classroom had caught on to the fact that a plane hittng the World Trade Center wasn't the whole story. In fact both towers had been leveled, another plane had crashed into the Pentagon, a fourth plane had crashed in Pennsylvania, the Whitehouse, United Nations building, and the Capitol building had all been evacuated, the Navy had dispatched three aircraft carriers to defend the East Coast, F-16's were circling over New York and Washington, all air traffic had been grounded, and approximately 3,000 people had been killed in America. Things like that are hard to imagine in Minnesota. Things like that don't happen here. Nine years ago, New Yorkers experienced the first bombing of the World Trade Center. Minnesota and the surrounding areas are not targets for this kind of thing therefore we've never seen or experienced such things (they're probably left out because there are more people in New York City alone than in all of Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska combined!). I didn't know anyone on a plane that day. I have never been to New York. I don't know anyone there. Until now that is. Since that disaster I've been reading about the people that died, where they were from, the job that they had, and other things about them. The only thing that was different about them from myself was that they happened to have a job in one of the tallest buildings in the world in one of the biggest cities in the world. Like I said, on Sept. 11, I didn't know anyone in New York. After that date, I feel like I know the people that died. It's strange to feel such grief for people that you've never met. I guess in closing my story, I just want to express condolances to the people of New York, Washington, Pennsylvania, but also to those in Oklahoma City and everywhere else, including Afghanastan, Iraq, and anyone else whose lives have been ended unjustly by those who would put their false ideals above innocent lives. I believe the President was right when he said that they will go all the way to "history's unmarked grave of discarded lies." The attacks did not happen here, but in a sense they did. Just as the NATO charter says, "An attack on one, is an attack on all," so is an attack on one state an attack on them all. We all ran to the TV to see what had happened. As we stood dumbfounded with the horrible sight and story another plane crashed into the World Trade center. I don't remeber how much longer it was before They were reporting that the Pentagon had also been hit. All I could think of was where is my family did they go to DC today? God all the poor people there; we have patients that work in the Pentagon! Millions of thoughts ran through my head at once. The phone rang and it was my husband(Thank God!) "I want you to come home now!" he said to me he knew that hey were ordering planes down and we were only getting some of the information on a very small TV. Where I was working was near one of the main airports in Virginia. After that we kept hearing rumors... The MAll has been blown up....the White house has been evacuated. All sorts of other stories coming in on the news. We also heard about the plane in PA that had crashed (saving who knows how many others by the heroics of those on board) I drove back with my coworker who I rode with every day. She had to stop and get her son from school. At that time they weren't letting kids out on school busses due to the fear that they would be targeted. We rushed home and all of my family was there. My mother-in-law who we lived with at the time was already home she had left work when the Pentagon had been struck. The building where she worked shook form the blast. She worked five miles away from the Pentagon if that gives you any idea how bad the explosion was. All day we cried and prayed and worried about people, our families , friends our country, our lives. What would happen next? Hours turned into days and into weeks. The fires had all been put out and the hopes of any survivors had been as well. My husband nad I were shopping at the target on Jefferson-Davis Highway (RT1) going towards Crystal City when we decided to drive by the Pentagon. At this point we had only seen and heard about the distruction from TV. We couldn't get close but you could take the exit ramp and turn around on the freeway and it took you right by the side that the plane had crashed into. I rolled my window down and we stared back at the great building. The smell of the air was different it was warm and you could still smell the smoke from the crash. It was a typical day, until I was sitting in traffic and heard the news on the radio. I thought it was some kinda sick joke, but then realized, "its probably a small plane". Well, I was wrong. When I got to work the whole office was in a state of confusion, listening to the radio, shusshing us as we walked in. Then the phone wouldnt stop ringing, anyone who new anyone was calling. I didnt know what to think, but the first thing I did was call my husband. Then I started scanning the names of people I knew in my head who could've been there. I thought of many. You see, my "extended" family, including my husband, are all in the volenteer firehouse in our town. And a few of these people are FDNY or NYPD. Thats when my heart hurt. We all gathered in one office and just listened to the radio. Then we saw the smoke....we knew it was time to go home to our families. The day continued as everyone gathered at the firehouse for stand by. "Where they gonna go?" We didnt know, we just waited and prayed they didnt. It all became real to me as we stood outside and saw 3 fighter jets fly by. Thats how I knew this was real. Turned out that everyone we knew became acounted for... except one. Terry Farrell. He worked at Rescue 4 in Queens. We waited together for word for days, weeks, and then one month turned into almost 2, and then they found him. The hurt came back so hard, it knocked me over. But, somehow, someway, there was closer. It's one year to date that we lost our friend, and the hurt comes back just as hard as it did then. We miss him terribly, and would give anything, just to have that chance to say goodbye. He leaves behind a wife and 2 children, and many, many beloved friends. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11th, 2001 is a day I will never forget in my lifetime. There were so many emotions running through me all at once. Along with all the emotions were all the thoughts and worries I had. It was the one day that for once I quit thinking about my little world and reached my mental hand out to the worlds of others whose lives were greatly affected by these events. I remember very strongly the feelings I had when I had head about the first attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. It was about the end of first period when I first heard reports about attacks on the World Trade Center buildings in New York City. The news came as a complete shock to me. At the time I thought it was only rumor but as I walked into second period I watched in complete awe as the second plane collided with the structure. To say that I was in complete shock was an understatement. For once I didn?t care about anything else but my figurative neighbors. I could feel tears swelling in my eyes as though I was in the middle of it myself but I could only imagine the true terror of it all. It was then that I realized how truly blessed I was to have reassurance that my friends and family were all safe within close range of me. I could only hope that most of the families in New York City and throughout the country would have the same reassurance but I soon came to realize that my hopes had died. After watching the various CNN reports on the classroom monitors for a whole class period in shock, I had to leave the class to go to third period where I was informed that the Pentagon had been attacked also. My teacher refused to let us watch the reports and continued on with class. It came as a big disappointment to me because I had reason to believe that a friend of the family may have been injured or killed in the attack. My lunch period which was at about twenty to eleven was filled with commotion and worry. Of course I felt for the victims families but I too feared for my own. My sister had recently joined the United States Air Force before September 11th. I feared for her only because I was uncertain as to the next target of the terrorists. When I finally returned home, my father was there along with my uncle. They asked me if I had heard all of the reports in which I had pretty much. These events led to quite a few discussions on everything we take for granted. I have been fortunate enough to realize that every day is a fifty-fifty chance that I come home alive. It was way before September 11th that I realized this but such events as these were quite the reminder. I wanted to give everyone I know and love a hug and an apology for anytime I may have taken them for granted. I called my aunt to make sure that everyone was fine and there were no calls as to inform us of a casualty within the family. The response was a negative but we had had a close call. My other aunt?s husband worked within the Pentagon and was off on an errand and had been fortunate enough to escape the attack. The next day in school we had several moments of silence and pledges to the flag. It felt good to see patriotism flowing so strong. It has been way too long since there has been such a big uniting of people of all shapes, sizes, and races. I had never seen so many streaming flags standing ever so high. Such a sight gave me some hope that one day everyone in the nation will stand in unity and triumph over all obstacles. Now we continue the search for the mastermind behind all of these attacks. Our chance of finding him are slim but we no longer live in fear. We continue with our everyday lives as we once did almost a year ago. Clean up efforts in New York City have finally been completed. The last mass of metal has been removed with a flag marking the end of such trial. Though we may still grieve, we stand as one. Together, we have and continue to overcome strife and terrorism all at once. Suffering is temporary but unity is forever. We may never fully understand why someone could plot to kill innocent civilians, but we know that we can stand against such evil. The American people can overcome anything thrown in our path and we have proven this. I address this statement to any American citizen that may read this: Hatred is very strong. Please do not let it overcome you. Problems are temporary and need no violence. I have faith that we may all come together and set aside or prejudices. One day we will all be known as one.
