It really changed mine. I was just coming from school when cousin from Bremen called me and told me the horrible story that a plane hit the World trade center. I didn?t believe her at all. I said: ? Stupid Joke and hung ?. I sat in the living room with a coffee, I wanted to watch some MTV, or so. When I turned on the TV I seen Tower One burning. I thought it would be a crazy science fiction movie. But every channel had the same pictures. I called my mum at work to tell her. The reception was really bad so she didn?t understand what I?ve said. My dad was at work too, the only thing he said is that he?s scared and that America is facing a war. That was my first thought too. The following days were crazy. A mile from our house is the German Military Base. Three helicopters flew over our House not even an hour. And our President Gerhard Schr?der said: ? Das ist kein Angriff auf die USA, sondern auf die zivilisierte Welt.? We all were scared what will happen in future. Since then I?m really interested in policies. Every day I come home from work I watch CNN Europe to get news about investigations. I?m proud to be an American but I don?t want a war against Sadam. All of sudden I had heard someone yell to me, "hey Debi, an airplane just hit one of the towers". Well I thought she was just kidding and I said yeah right...anyway, a few moments later she had heard on her radio that another plane had hit the second tower. Everyone was going out on the internet and checking all of this out. It was horrible. It was the worst day ever.. I have always wanted to go to New York and take my kids to see the World Trade Center--but now I will not beable to do that because of one human(if you want to call him that) person who planned the whole thing. It saddens me to know that there are such cruel and evil people in this world. Why this happened-we will probably never know but what's worse is all the innocent people that were killed or hurt in this tragedy. Needless to say the company that I was working for at the time did have an employee who had a family member that was working at the World Trade Center and he was one of the people that was killed. The company closed the office and told everyone to go home and be with their families. For days that is all we saw on the television is the footage of this horrible tragedy..It's one I don't think anyone will ever beable to forget--at least I know I won't. It's been a year now and it's a pretty gloomy day here. Not too much happening and kinda sad. My heart goes out to all those families who were victims of this terrible occurrence. We need to always remember that life is too short and always make sure you kiss and hug your children, spouse every day when you leave because you never know what the day will bring. I was in my 4th period english class when anonucment had come on saying that a plane had crashed into the world trade center. I thought a plane had gotten off course and accidently crashed into the trade center. We didn't actually know what was going on becuase the tv wasn't working in the classroom. I would have never tought that it was a terriost attack but then another plane crashed into the other tower, one more was found crashed into the ground in Penslyvannia and another crashed into the pentagon. I knew that this couldn't be an accident. In the next period business programing we watched tv and we saw the footage of the planes crashing into the buildings. It was very suprising that this nation could be attacked in such a way. Turning a plane into a weapon. The last period on the day was spanish. we also watched tv in that class. Then when i came home i remeber the two towers falling to the ground. It was also when i came home that i remebered that my cousin lived right next to the tower. I wondered if he was alright or not. It was period two, and I was teaching nine Chinese immigrants English as a Second Language 101. I took attendance and the students reviewed a former lesson: Hello, what is your name?" "My name is..." Since it was such a beautiful, crystal clear day, I chose to teach the kids, "Today the weather is beautiful!" The kids were still copying stuff from the blackboard as I stood by the window admiring the crystal clear blue sky. I heard a loud noise, like a plane taking off and suddenly I saw a big jet that appeared to be headed straight at me. I recoiled. When I came to my senses, I thought that the plane was in trouble or something, because it was flying so low. Initially I thought it was making an emergency landing, and I hoped it would attempt to land in the Hudson River in order to save lives. I tried hard to look inside the windows as it flew past the school building. It seemed very calm inside; I figured the passengers must be prepared and praying for a safe landing. But the plane picked up speed and steadied its course. It appeared it would fly right into the twin Chatham Towers apartments at Confucius Square down in Chinatown, but it stepped up its speed, and I thought the pilot regained control, and had to ascend in order to avoid the tall buildings, especially the World Trade Center buildings that it turned and flew towards. I crossed my fingers, hoping it would manage to fly between the two giants, but it hit the North Tower directly. It looked as though it disintegrated into glass fragments as it penetrated the building, but I saw it parked there, the tail black and set inside the black hole; then came the crash sound and I glanced over at my students. They were still copying from the board. I turned quickly back to the site and saw the fireball. I exclaimed, "Did you hear that?! Oh my goodness! An American Airlines 757 just crashed into the World Trade Center!" the kids said "Whoa... as they exited their seats to see what I invited them to look at. The black smoke began to pour out of the North Tower. The kids exclaimed, "WOW!" and were laughing. I retorted, "This is horrible. Do you realize hundreds of people have just been killed?!!" I walked over to look out of the classroom door and tell an adult to inform the principal. An English teacher was coming down the hall. I exclaimed to her, "My God, Laura, an American Airlines 757 just flew into the World Trade Center!" She continued walking towards the library, holding her cup of coffee and not bothering to look. I heard later that she announced to the library that I must be on drugs, because of what I told her. Since we had front row seats, and I knew this would be an historic event, I permitted all of my classes to view the disaster as it happened. Thank goodness we were too far away to see people dying. Everything appeared so clearly I wished it could have been a computer game, and not real. It was the most memorable witnessing in my life and it has haunted me every day since. To the firemen, police, cleanup crew, survivors, volunteers and anyone else who wanted to be there to help I can't be more thankful to you knowing that when things do go bad there will always be people to help. Like everyone else has mentioned it was a georgeous day. I was going to work and school at the time. I was at school in the morning. Same ol' typical day to us. I was tired and not feeling well so when they came in and told us the school was being evacuated I was quick out the door. Rumors where going around on the way out that there was a bomb threat at the Federal Building (which is right behind our school) so I didn't think anything of it. Figured they got bomb threats all the time and they were usually a hoax. On my way to the bus stop down the street I put my headphones on. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. I haven't listened to Howard Stern in a while so I decided to put him on. I had no clue what was going on. It sounded like he had people outside walking around interviewing people but it sounded like pure chaos. I was on the bus catching bits and pieces trying to figure out what the hell was going on. I tried to call my dad at work and the line was busy so I tried to call mom and busy. I finally get through to find out what had happened. What scared my most was a plane hitting the Pentagon and one going down so close to home. Flight 93 must have flown right over Pittsburgh. I was sitting on the bus with my hands over my mouth and never in all my life did I just want to get home. I never realized how bad it was until I got home. My brother seen the whole thing on t.v. and told me what happened. He like everyone else thought it was an accident until the second plane came. I felt so bad for flying out of school that day. All it was the rest of the day or week I should say was radio and Fox news. Downtown Pittsburgh pretty much shut down and evacuated of course my job didn't. I had to call off. I was scared and not going anywhere unless it was near home. Besides I was really down in the dumps about everything going on. Dad got sent home from work too. We all stayed home that night. Some of my closest friends came down (one is now my boyfriend who's in the military) that night cause they weren't going to work. They brought some beer down and we sat on the back deck glued to the radio. We discussed so many things and how we felt and that did me the world of good. I cried and still do sometimes about what happened but never have I felt so lucky in all my life. To be home with my friends and family and to know that we were all safe and able to watch the sun set that night and being American meant more than having the greatest job, hitting the lottery, or having a dream vacation. It is so sad that it takes something like that to make you realize that everything you take for granted could all be taken away at any given moment. The one thing I'll also remember is how everyone wanted to help, the flags hanging everywhere and how if I go to a public event today (concert for example) I see so many people with some sort of patriotic shirt on. Things have definately changed in this country. I'll never forget how scared I was for a while that something else may happen, I just wanted to get so far away from the city as possible. And now this thought will be in my head for the rest of my life. What if something else happens? I have my say about people living in that part of the world but I will keep that to myself because I could get brutal. Tell us your story: I was awaken at home by a co-worker who called to tell me to turn on the TV because 2 planes had just hit the World Trade Center. I turned the TV on and was greeted with the news on all local channels. As I sat watching in disbelief, we talked for a few minutes on the phone and then I hung up, got up and got dressed. I continued to watch the news, flipping between channels to get the latest information. The images and details were being played over and over, and each time any new information came to light, even if it was speculation, it was immediately broadcast. At first, I had thought that it was some huge mistake, but after the Pentagon got hit, I knew we were under attack. I tried to call my girlfriend (now my wife) after getting dressed, but was unable to get through, and even the cell-phone wasn't able to connect. The fact that communication was interrupted at this time made me anxious, as the scope of the problem was now becoming very apparent. I kept trying and got through about 10 minutes later. I told her to turn on the TV, as she hadn't been watching the news. I explained to her what had happened up to that point. We stayed on the phone for a while, both watching the news. We watched as the towers collapsed, and at that time I told her that I wanted to come over to her house. The drive to her house (about a 20 minute drive), was eerie - you could see how affected everyone was that was on the road. There was no hint of inconsideration that is always present in some form when driving...people were stunned. We continued watching the news, which was constant, and I called into my job (which is in downtown Chicago), to see what the status was there. At first I was told not to come in as they were closing, but a short time later, my boss paged me and informed me that they needed a skeleton staff there, and that I was to come in. After I told my girlfriend that I had to go into work later in the day, she exclaimed "Is he crazy???" I did head into work later, and since I work only a few blocks away from the Sears Tower, I was constantly wondering when, or if, IT was going to be hit. This was even more prevalent in my mind as we kept hearing in the news about how one of the planes was thought to have been headed for Chicago. By this time, though, the FAA had grounded all flights, but this didn't provide any relief as there could have been other ways to attack Chicago as well. Immediately after that day, I saw tons of US flags displayed on cars all over the city, including my own a week later or so. And on two occasions in the weeks to follow, in the northern night time sky, I saw what probably gave me the most feeling of security ? the afterburners of jet fighters as they flew on patrol. One moment the strange light from the afterburner caught my eye, and as I watched, the next moment it winked out. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was almost 7:00 a.m. in Salt Lake City and I had been at work for about a ? hour. I'd turned on the radio and suddenly the music was interrupted by the news people coming on and saying the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane. I pictured a little single engine plane hitting it. One of the DJ's said something about it must have been an accident and all of a sudden I felt in my heart that it wasn't an accident, that it had been deliberate. Then it seemed like just a few minutes later and they said another one had hit the WTC and I knew for sure then it was deliberate. I was still picturing fairly small planes, about the size of a commuter plane. When I walked to the cafeteria in our building they had a TV and were showing the 2nd plane fly into the building and I will never forget how shocked I was to see such a big plane. I remember thinking "how did they get such a big plane?" It didn't occur to me that there were other people on the plane who didn't want to be there. Then I started praying that everyone would get out of the WTC. My brain was screaming to those people in the buildings, "get out, get out". Then the first building collapsed! It happened so soon after it was hit, and I was sure that no one had gotten out and I started weeping. When I heard later that firemen and police officers had run into that building I was stunned. How had they dared to do that? I still can't believe how brave those men were. The news started reporting about the Pentagon and the plane crash in the woods. It was all so shocking. As news came in on who had done it I wondered who these people were who hated us so much. It felt so personal. How could there be that kind of hate in the world? I wondered if those men were shocked when they woke up in Hell. Our country helps so many other countries and all we get is hate for it. Are they jealous of us? Why do they hate us? I'm sure there is some big political reason but it just doesn't make sense to me. I called my family to make sure they were okay. I kept crying when I thought about all the dead. At the time I thought it might be 8 or 10 thousand so I was so grateful that it was only about 3,000 total. That still seems like a miracle to me that more people didn't die that day. Today is September 11, 2002. It's been a year since that day and I would have to say that I have changed in some ways. I was more distrustful of foreign people for awhile. I didn't want to be but I couldn't help it. I've come to realize how much I love my country. I appreciate the people in the armed services, the firemen and the policemen more than I ever thought I would. I love the American Flag. I was a volunteer at the Olympic Village during the Olympics in February and it made me feel better to see so many different countries come together. Everyone was so friendly and grateful to be there. Most of the athletes were so young, almost babies. I hoped that they would leave Salt Lake, loving the US and US citizens. Maybe they will be a voice of reason in their counties. I don't know, I just have that hope. And I hope that God will be with us always. Tell us your story: I was headed out the front door when my brother-in-law grabbed me by the left elbow and said "Look" as he spun me around to face the television set. I was startled at first, the image of black smoke rising from a gaping hole in the side of the World Trade Center so beyond my imagination. I had lived in Brooklyn for 35 years and visited the Trade Center's observation deck many times. I rode its elevators just for the heck of it, fascinated by the queezy feeling which hit your stomach on the way up - and especially on the way down. And every time I walked through the ground level plaza I could not resist the urge to put my cheek against the corner of one of the towers and look straight up. Some strange optical illusion always made it appear ready to fall over when I did that. Now I was watching live the most terrible optical illusion of all. A tragic accident, for sure. What else could it be? I remember wondering how both towers could be on fire if only one plane crashed into them. Maybe it went straight through one to ram into the other on sheer inertia. But then they replayed the second plane slamming into the tower. I raced to my wife's place of employment, Lunden's Flower Shop in Brownsville, Pa. Of course, everyone there was glued to the tiny 13" television normally used to watch the day's soaps with. And from that spot on the planet Earth, I watched the towers crumble and fall. Next to me stood Skip Dugan, fire chief of the LaBelle Volunteer Fire Company, a small town on the outskirts of Brownsville. A fireman at heart, one ear was tuned to his fire radio as he listened to the reports on tv. Suddenly, he told everyone to shut up. A 911 report was being broadcast over the radio of a plane crash in Shanksville, Pa., two counties away from where we stood, a mere hour if you keep the gas pressed. We ignored him. In the country most plane crash alarms turn out to be false, usually turning out to be controlled field burns which tend to throw a lot of smoke in the air. And even if the report were true, how could it match the horror of what we were witnessing in New York City; an accident against terrorism at its worst. It was Flight 93. I attended many events at the World Trade Center and the Winter Garden. I also applied for free artist space on the 91st floor at the WTC-Tower1.I used to sit on the lawn at Christopher St. and watch the sunset, awaiting the lights at the WTC to go on before I returned to my apartment at dusk. I was teaching art in Scranto when I heard the shocking reports. The c\hildren were not allowed to watch it, but I was glad that I did not see the horror as it was happening. When I went home, there was a letter in my mail box from The LMCC, who sponsered the artist grants at the WTC. I was horrified at this coincidence and relieved that I had not been accepted for the space. I was afraid to return to NYC, but jumped into the car on Sept. 22nd after the advice of a friend who said that there were volunteer opportunities. There were none for me, but I happened upon a place that has become to be known POINT THANK YOU at West St. and Christopher. I picked up a sign that said "thank you-heroes".Ireturned weekend after weekend and on holidays until May 30th. These New Yorkers were the most incredible grass roots volunteers; some going every night in all kinds of weather to encourage and support all the rescueand recovery workers, families and all New Yorkers through the almost 9 months. I feel like one of the fortunate people in the world to have lived so close that I could help in some small way and , in the process, bonded with a group that had the same goals and mindset. On the 20 minute drive to my job from Huntington ,NY to Syosset, as always, I was listening to Howard Stern on the radio when he said, in a rather strangely serious voice, " Oh this is something..actually this seems pretty serious. Apparently, a plane has crashed into the World Trade Center. We don't know too much about this yet...whether it was a small or a large plane but we'll see as we find out more about this. Wow." Or something like that. I thought it was a joke and was expecting some ridiculous spoof to begin, but everything got very serious at that point so I turned to a more reliable news source, 1010 WINS. They also were reporting the same story with very little new information. As the reporter on the air was speaking of what he did know, he added,"Yup, and there goes another one. Another plane has now crashed into the other tower of the World Trade Center." I thought, perhaps a small plane or helicopter got lost in the smoke and struck the second tower by accident. Just then I was pulling into the parking lot at my job. There was a small crowd of people standing outside smoking. I said to my boss Carmen, a native of Romania, " Do you hear all this stuff going on in the city?" She looked at me in a very matter-of -fact way and said," It's a terrorist attack." I said, "Really? You think so?" Carmen only nodded then turned and continued smoking her cigarette. Inside , people were starting to gather around the TV in the lobby. I was one of few American-born employees so it seemed that my coworkers were affected by the tragedy in a different way. They were horrified, yet not surprised; most of them were from the newly formed eastern bloc countries or the mid-east. I felt sort of alone in my fear. Reports were beginning to come in about the Pentagon, and the plane brought down in Pennsylvania. It all seemed out of control. I was waiting to hear of other local random crashes. I left work after that wanting to gather my children and be home with them in the event of any further tragedies. One by one , I picked them up giving them only brief descriptions of what was happening. They were concerned about their father because he just started a new job that sometimes took him into the city. When we got home we telephoned him to make sure he was okay. He had been on the other side of the east river from the towers, in Brooklyn, and was able to see the towers burning and then eventually collapse. I then made calls to all of my loved ones. We spent the rest of the day near the TV, being careful to monitor the amount of devastation the kids had to watch over and over. My boyfriend, Dennis, made a trip to Costco for emergency supplies, and the gun shop for a shotgun. We didn't know what the the next few days, or hours might bring. She told me what was happening and I couldn?t believe it. It looked like something from a movie. I just couldn?t believe it, nothing ever happened this serious and tragic in my lifetime. A few minutes later, I saw the first tower crumble down to the ground in front of my eyes. I was in shock for the longest after the Twin Towers had collapsed. Our plans for that particular day were to drive down to Washington D.C. to go sightseeing and return on that Wednesday, the 12th, to do more sightseeing in NY. After staying up all night in the city that never sleeps, we decided to head back to our hotel room, which was on a military base in NJ. We dropped off a friend in Brooklyn and drove back into Manhattan where we took the Westside Freeway to the tunnel. As we drove past the WTC we actually thought about getting out and doing our sightseeing then, this was a little before 8:30 am. Since parking is so hard to find and we were already late for picking up a friend to make the trip to D.C., we fortunately decided to see the towers the next day. By the time we exited the tunnel back to NJ, the first radio announcemount came over the air about a plane hitting the towers. I honestly thought that it must be a joke, we just drove past there. Unfortunately it was not a joke at all. By the time we reached our hotel room, the second plane had already hit as well as the Pentagon. We were in a complete state of shock and horror. The first things we tried to do were get in touch with our families to let them know that we were alright. That was almost impossible with the way the phone lines were. We did get through to our rental car agency and arrange to pick up another vehicle to get home, since the news had already stated the closing of the airports and we were to fly out of Newark Int'l on that Thursday, the 13th. We had to drive back up to Newark to trade in the car we had for another. On the way up there I remember seeing the huge cloud of smoke over Manhattan, it was terrible. After going through armed guards to get into the airport, we traded our car in and headed home. On the way back down the New Jersey Turnpike you could see just miles and miles of ambulances speeding up the Turnpike from different counties and cities. That really hit home on how horrible the damage was. (We hadn't seen a lot the news coverage of the events, yet.) Although we were all extremely thankful to be a life, it hurt to know that so many others were not as fortunate as us. The tragic victims and heroes of 9/11 will always have a place in my heart. I remember exactly how that day went, what I was doing before, during, and after that attack. It was a blue day, so I had my 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th period classes that day. I had just gotten out of my 2nd period pre-calculus class and was headed up to visit my guitar teacher just to stop by and say hi. As I walked in the door to his classroom, I noticed that everyone in there was just standing and staring at the TV screen. I nudged my way through the crowd and found out what was wrong. I couldn?t believe my eyes; the World Trade Centers were burning. It was truly unbelievable. These two pillars of American pride were in flames. I recall running from that room and into my German teacher?s room just incase she didn?t know. She wasn?t there, but the TV was on, so I knew that the word had spread. As I had run to her room, I was telling everyone I saw what had happened, most didn?t believe me, and one, I recall, didn?t seem to care. Then, as class started, my German teacher walked into the room and just started watching the TV. We had no idea what was happening. People slowly realized what was happening and began to understand how big of a catastrophe this was. Our teacher at various times started commenting on how she viewed all this, but as soon as she started, it seemed like something new developed, causing her to shut up once more. Then we heard news that a plane hit the pentagon and another was on the way. That?s when everyone felt the tragedy hit home. This was in our backyard! Many students in my class started crying since their parents worked at the Pentagon. My friend realized that her father might have been at the Pentagon on that day and got even more worried. I accompanied her to the office so she could call her father and make sure he was all right. On the way back, we stopped at her brother?s classroom to convey the message to him. This was one of the most horrendous things ever in American history. Afterwards, I can remember the intense sense of depression that plagued everyone in the halls. Everyone was upset and could think of nothing other than the events of September 11. Never before had we suspected that terrorism could strike this close to us, but alas, it had. It was apparently time to bring things into perspective. The very next day, I remembered everyone had on red, white and blue. And it seemed that one could not step outside the house without being ambushed by flags. Patriotism was at a high point. But the sad part of this is that it takes a national disaster to unite this country. Only through tragedy does politics get put aside and companionship embraced. But at least we have that sense of patriotism. It may not always show, but its there. I woke up with a bolt at 5:45AM and tried to get back to sleep without success. I finally decided to get up at 6:04AM. My husband asked what I was doing up so early - I am a night person and am usually up late and late to rise in the morning so this was very unlike me to be up at this hour. I told Skip that I didn't know why I was up but couldn't get back to sleep. Something was wrong - this had happened to me my whole life...I always got a warning of something going to happen like this. I tried to push it out my mind. I went to the back patio doors to let the dogs out and give them their treats and I was on my way back into the bedroom to get my glasses when my husband, who never turns on the bedroom tv first thing in the morning came hurrying into the family room putting on the tv and telling me to look at what was happening. There were the broadcasts of the World Trade Center buildings being hit by planes. I don't know why but at no time did we ever think this was a movie special effect although so very surreal. I said the same exact thing I said when he turned on the tv many years ago to show me the Challenger blowing up, "OH MY GOD!" I kept repeating this thru the hot tears stinging my eyes, trying to blink them away very rapidly so I didn't miss anything. Skip used to work in the North tower on the 13th floor just before we moved here to Arizona. I'd gone down there to pick him up so many times. MY GOD, if we hadn't moved here...he'd still be there... We watched and cried in disbelief to see the towers fall. We prayed that everyone was safely out. We prayed for empty floors where and above the planes hit the buildings. I called my parents in Columbia, MD right outside of Washington, DC and my sister in NYC - but our calls could not get to them with the circuits so busy. Our cell phones couldn't get to them either. My brother had just moved to ValDosta, Georgia. He had lived across the street from my parents in MD and worked at Prince George Hospital in DC. The news of the Pentagon being hit had us crazy with worry. What landmark was next, we wondered? Would we be hit here with all our air force bases? We finally did get thru to my family members and they were alright. My parents couldn't watch the tv after they saw the strikes first hit and I was the one to tell them that the towers were gone now. I remember Mom asking with such insistance, "WHAT DO YOU MEAN...GONE?" I said with a shakey, cracking voice in between my sobbing, "THEY'VE BOTH COLASPED - THERE'S NOTHING LEFT THERE NOW!!!" I heard her tell my Dad what I said and I heard him say, "Dear God, no!" Somewhere in time, the sadness became anger inside us. "How dare they do this to us!" Whomever they are, they've now woken the sleeping giant and they will be sorry they ever did this to us. We can't let THIS one go by without an answer. I was so mad and so hurt, I wanted to kill them with my bare hands - who did this? We were glued to the tv for days, maybe weeks. We couldn't think or talk about "IT" without crying. Till this day, we still tear up at the mention, at the site of a picture in the paper, a book, or on tv. We sent money and supplies and wondered how else could we help so far away now. It somehow hurt us more being native New Yorkers transplanted out here...always true New Yorkers at heart, than the other Americans living here in AZ. After all, even tho we didn't live in NYC now, our hearts were there along with our friends and relatives and ex-coworkers. Skip had worked in 1WTC and it hit him very hard. He used to be at work at 7AM - he used to take the Path in from Jersey from his grandmother's house when he stayed there - now he couldn't allow himself to think about it without breaking down. It's almost a year now...we have the picture of the 3 firemen raising the flag in a frame on the wall in the diningroom. We wore out our flag being out 24/7 in all kinds of weather - in front of the house...we just bought 2 more to replace it. And we just replaced the flag on the van's antenna...taking off the Jack ball to replace it with a Diamondbacks antenna ball. Flags still line our streets here and people won't sit passively by while some crazy terrorist tries to ruin any part of our "USA". I'm glad for that and I KNOW we won't ever sit still again. With all the heartbreak they caused us - they only succeeded in making us stronger and closer and more proud to live here - to be an AMERICAN than ever before. I can only think: God bless all of us and all the people who cried their tears for us and gave us support all around the world. God Bless OUR America...the land of the free, the home of the brave!
