I have a habit, learned from my years in the military, to turn on the news every morning as soon as my alarm goes off. I have the alarm set two minutes before the top of the hour so I can catch the top stories on CNN before hitting the shower. I turned on the TV and there was a commercial on. After the commercial a screen with the words "Breaking News" came on. Both planes had hit already, so the first thing I saw was the gaping hole in the north tower. I started saying "Oh my God!" over and over. My brother and mother came running into the room to see what was happening. It was the most shocking thing I've ever seen. My mind couldn't process what I was seeing. I knew I had to go to work, so I rushed into the shower and watched the news while trying to quickly get ready. I happened to be looking at the screen when the south tower collapsed. I remember the view from CNN. There were two puffs of dust, one on each side of the building and the just a huge cloud of dust. I knew it had collapsed. I ran into my mother's room. I was crying and my hand was over my mouth. I couldn't speak to tell her what had happened. I immediately thought of all the firemen and emergency workers who must have been killed when the building collapsed. I got into my car and drove to work, very nervous. I work downtown surrounded by high buildings. On the drive to work I heard on NPR that the north tower had collapsed. I remember driving over the hill on highway 52 waiting for downtown San Diego to come into view. I knew nothing had happened, but I still half expected to see smoke coming from downtown. I work at the state court downtown. Everyone was very tense. There were rumors of planes headed to the west coast, although I knew almost immediately they were talking about the planes that had already crashed. There is no TV where I work and we couldn't listen to the radio during work because of what we do. There was a rumor that the court was closing, but I walked down the hall and all our judges were on the bench. We got the work 20 minutes later to get out of the courthouse. I was working with a customer, but my boss just told me to get out of there. When I was walking back to my car there were crowds of people streaming out of all the tall buildings downtown. There was a traffic jam to get out of there at 9:30 a.m. I wasn't afraid or panicked, I just had a feeling of dread. I remember thinking that this must be how it felt during World War II, this general feeling of worry and dread. I went home and my brother's girlfriend asked me if I would watch my niece. My niece was two at the time and very sweet. I played with her and took her to the park. I got her down for a nap and I was so emotionally exhausted myself that I also fell asleep. The next day I had a job interview for a huge promotion and it was my little nephew's birthday. I got the promotion. I remember not being able to feel happy about my good fortune. I remember feeling that evening after work as my family gathered to celebrate my promotion and my nephew's eighth birthday that we were so very lucky to be together as a family. It has now been a whole year and I still can't really believe that this tragedy really happened. It's so huge that my mind still can't comprehend it. I think about the victims and pray for their families every day. I walk past a fire house on my way to work every day. When I see a firefighter I always say thank you. Tell us your story: When I first heard of the first plane hitting the World Trade Center my first reaction was I thought they attacked the WTC in Downtown Baltimore at the inner harbor. But then I realized it was the one in NYC. The first thought that came through my mind was how and why could anyone do this to the US. That day we got sent home early from school and as soon as I got there I immediately paged my mom and dad to make sure they were alright and then I turned on the TV. I didn't realize how real it was until I saw both towers os the WTC fall to the ground. Then I heard for the first time about the 2 other planes. The one that hit the pentagon and the one that crashed in PA. All day on the radio and on TV there was nothing but media coverage of what happened and to tell you the truth I'm tired of hearing about it. I'm not saying it like I'm glad it happened but for everybody it was a terrible experience and some people just don't like to hear about it over and over again. in conclusion I want to say God bless to families to the people on the planes and in the WTC during this attack. I hope the president of the US is doing everything he can to prvent this from happening to the US again. I put on my radio and was listening, when I heard that a plane hit one of the World Trade Centers. I was just shocked but still taught it was an accident. The people in my office were all listening to my radio and we then heard that another airplane hit the other Trade Center. Now I was scared and horrified and taught this cannot be an accident. We must be at war! I was so scared and then when I heard the Trade Centers callapsed. I was so sad, I just couldnnn't believe it. I cried and I did not know what to do. It was just too unbelievable. I called my son and I told him and he was seeing it on the TV. I called my sister and finally got thru and she was also seeing it on TV and in her neighborhood papers were falling from the sky--the burnt papers from the Towers. How horrible and sad. We were sent home from the office, but there were no trains. I walked towards 59 Street Bridge, but someone mentioned there was a train running, so I took that train over the bridge, then walked home. I had taken my little girl to school and had several errands to run before I was to meet friends for lunch that day. As I drove to the first store, I heard the report on the radio of a plane hitting the Twin Towers in New York. No one thought terrorism then, just a bad accident. As I shopped that morning I heard people talking to each other about what had happened and the radio blaring reports from the pharmacy section of the store. I suddenly needed to go home. Something was going on...much bigger than a small plane crash. My answering machine was blinking...My husband.."Honey, turn on CNN", my daughter away at college.."Mom, where are you..is everyone OK"...our former exchange student calling from Sweden.."I need to know if everyone is safe". CNN showed me the horror. In addition to New York, the Pentagon had been hit and there were other planes missing, presumed headed toward Washington. I contemplated taking the kids out of school, but then thought that they were probably safer where they were. My phone rang and it was my friend, Dawn. She told me that my friend Karyn's husband had been on the flight that had hit the Pentagon. Karyn and I had been friends for about 8 years. Our daughters were the same age and good buddies. I went straight to her house. Several of our mutual friends had already started gathering. Karyn was in shock, still hoping that the reports were somehow not true...that maybe somehow it hadn't been the plane Lenny had been on. When the terrible reality began to sink in, she hoped for his survival...not comprehending the resulting fireball from a plane fully loaded with jet fuel. She worried about how would she tell his children...what could she say to her two little girls, just five and eight. There have been many stories of heroism associated with 9/11. I saw a different kind of heroism that day as friends and family gathered around a grieving young widow and supported her through the darkest of days...quietly doing the things that needed doing..making phone calls, bringing food, watching children, being there to listen. I know it was a scene that was played out across America many more times..over 3,000 more times as we began to know the death toll that awful day would bring. The hardest time for me that evening was finally going back to my own family and having to tell my children that Lenny Taylor had been on Flight 77. This was a man who played with his own children and included my 8 year old as one of his own. My teenagers babysit for his kids. It still affects them today. They say 9/11 changed everything. I know it changed me. I hope I never forget the need I felt that night to cling to my family and tell them I love them. I always have a twinge now when my husband flies on business...always aware of how quickly life can change in the blink of an eye. Oh..and I've never been prouder to be an American. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001, I was a student attending a local community college and living with my parents. My first class began at 8 AM Central Time. So, being the good student I was, I was sitting in class at least 10 minutes before 8. Class went through session as it always did with no interruption. After the class ended at quarter after 9 (now at least an hour after the events in New York), I crossed the campus to go to the library so I could log onto the internet there. I checked my Hotmail account and upon logging out, Hotmail redirects you to MSN.com. It was then that I got my first glimpse. On the opening page there was a picture of the WTC with smoke billowing out of it. But, I simply did not react to it. I ignored it because there had to be a catch. As far as I was concerned, it was not real. I immediately searched for another page and that was it. As soon as I logged off, I did one quick glance around the room, just to see if anyone was huddled together talking about anything, but I saw nothing of the sort. I was now convinced that that picture was mearly a scene from a new movie or something. I then attended my next class at 10. Again, class went on as nothing happened. Nobody mentioned anything, so I had no reason to believe anything had happened. That class ended at 11:15 and I got home for lunch at around 11:30. I walked in the door and my father, who should have been at work, was glued to the tv. He turns to me and asks, "Did you hear what happened?" I glanced to the tv and saw the same scene I had seen on the internet earlier that morning. I scoffed, "Yeah. Something about the WTC." My father replied, "Yeah! A plane crashed into one of the WTC towers!" It was then that I realized...this was no movie. My dad wasn't watching E! Entertainment, he was watching Fox News Live. My dad then recounted the whole tragedy from the New York to Washington to Pennsylvania. I didn't eat lunch that day. As 12:30 rolled around, I realized that my next class started at 1. My father made me go, so I stopped off for gas on the way and got to class by 1. Now, everyone knew. My whole class was talking about it and everyone was yelling to the teacher that class needs to be cancelled or at least they should wheel a tv into the classroom so we can watch the news. The teacher refused and he instead taught class as if it was any other day. I retained very little from that lecture. After then, I drove back home and passed up the gas station I had filled up at previously with no complications. Traffic had now come to a complete stop at that intersection from the hoards of cars pulling in trying to fill up their tanks. I squeezed past traffic and eventually found my way out. When I got home, I continued to watch tv till my mother got home. When she arrived, I asked her if we could go give blood after supper. We attempted to do so, but were turned away. There was an over surplus of donors and our blood was simply not necessary. That evening I recieved phone calls from friends away at other colleges and my brother who is in the Air Force and was stationed at Mountain Home AFB. I watched as President Bush gave his speech and I tried to go to bed hoping the day was all just a dream. I first found out about what happened during math class when we went down to a bus evacuation program. Our bus was out of control. The bus driver said "everyone be quiet." He told us that a plane had just hit the World Trade Center in New York, and we were all jumping around while this was going on. No one believed him, so we went back to class. My class asked our teacher if that was really true. She said it was and started to cry. The rest of that say, the attack was what everyone was talking about. No one really knew what had happened until they got home to see the news. There were such frightening images to see. My mom picked me up from school that day, and I went to the dentist. On the way there, my mom told me about what had happened. I was so scared. At the dentist office, I watched the news to see what happened. I couldn't believe what I saw. I couldn't believe what I saw. I could never even imagine that this would ever happen. That night I couldn't fall asleep. My mind was racing about what happened. I was so worried that they would attack us again. My life has changed in so many ways because of September 11th. After September 11th, I couldn't sleep for weeks. I realized about how precious life really is and how quickly it can be gone. I am much more concerned about my surroundings. For example, I would have concerns about flying in a plane next time I go somewhere. That day made me realize how important the military is and how they have to protect our country and sometimes need to take down other countries that may try to hurt us. Even though I am more aware of what is going on in our world today, I can't live in fear. September 11th should be remembered forever. I mean this day has made us much more patriotic and our country has come together so much. We should remember the lives that were lost, those poor innocent victims. We should also remember the brave heroes at ground zero that helped out by rescuing those who were trapped inside the buildings. One nation more united, that's how we can look at this tragedy. Tell us your story: My memory of that day starts with my husband, 10 month old son and I in bed having some family quiet time before the day got started. The phone rang. It was my mother. I will never forget her words to me. "Turn on the TV. They've bombed the World Trade Center and there's something going on at the Pentagon." My adrenalin surged as I turned on the news to see the horrifying footage. Although I knew no one in those places (that I'm aware of) I spent the day glued to the television, not wanting to see, yet somehow needing to. I cried and prayed for days after. My heart especially goes out to the children whose lives were ripped apart by the loss of one or more of their cherished people. I would look at my son and think of their's. What a nightmare. And yet, there is still life, there is still hope, there is still reason to go on. As an American and even more as a Christian, I know that there is still good and that good will overcome evil. I know that there are many who cannot fathom a God who would allow such atrocities, but the atrocities come from the hatred, anger and wrong-doing of mankind. Free will. God does love us and will help us overcome anything that evil might throw our way if we stand with Him. My prayers are with all who have suffered such great loss as a result of this tragedy. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Let me begin by stating that I believe Breaking News is the most important use of the Television medium. Ever since I was 8 years old, and the Beirut Army Barracks were bombed, I understood the impact that Breaking News could have on people. Television is our common connection with events and each other when it comes to substantial occurances in our world. Given this, I had many times in the past left my VCR recording CNN in the evenings or CNBC in the mornings to make sure that if any major events did occur, I would capture them for future viewing. On the morning of September 11th I was working for Knight Transportation, a medium-sized trucking company in Phoenix, Arizona. As part of my duty in managing three departments, I often was at work before 6AM to begin my long workday. On September 11th I remember sitting at home and watching CNN until about 5:20 AM (8:30 AM Eastern) when I left for work. I did not put a tape in the VCR this day. I arrived at work at about 5:50 and logged onto my computer. The first sight I look at every morning is CNN. I do this primarily because when events occur - they do so at any time. It was common practice for me to repeatedly check CNN throughout the day for breaking news stories. On the morning of September 11th, when I logged on to CNN.com, the banner simply read "BREAKING NEWS: A plane has crashed into the World Trade Center in New York. Details soon." My first thought was "wow - what a horrible accident". I then went into a slight state of shock, and called over one of the few other office workers to read the screen. She read the website and said "it must be on TV - lets go see". We walked back to the drivers lounge (which had a big screen TV) and turned on CNN. As we did, you could see Tower 1 burning. I said what millions of others first said, which was "OH MY GOD". I watched TV until 6:00 AM, when I grabbed my cell phone and called my dad, who is a long-haul truck driver. My dad was in Dallas, Texas that morning. I woke him up when I called. I told him what had happened, and I told him "call Linda (my stepmother) and tell her to tape CNN. Call your dad (my grandfather) and tell him to tape CBS or ABC". My dad asked me if I was going home, and I said "I can't - I have to stay". I walked back into the office, and had a co-worker walk up to me and say "did you hear?" to which I replied "yes - what an odd accident". My co-worker looked at me puzzled and said "no - the 2nd tower is hit too". When I was told this to me, it was the first of three times on September 11th when I made the statement that "there will be rumors all day because of the magnitude of this event". I then went back to the drivers lounge, watched the replay of the 2nd plane hitting the 2nd tower. It was at this moment that I gasped for air, and made the same connection everyone else did: terrorism. I watched TV for another 5 or 10 minutes. I went back to my desk and began to let people know that were coming to work what was happening. The same look of horror and terror from each person - I was struck at how universal the reaction was. At roughly 6:30 Arizona time, I had the first of several friends call me to see if I knew what was going on. Everyone that knows me knows about my news obsession. My father called me a few minutes later and again asked "are you going home?". "I don't know Dad, I can't yet. I'll call you back soon". At about 6:45 Arizona time, a woman a few desks down said that she had just heard on NBC radio that the Pentagon was on fire. This was the second time during the day I told people "its just a rumor - there's going to be rumors today - thats what happens when huge stories occur". About 30 seconds after I said this, my best friend called me and said "the Pentagon is on fire - who would attack the Pentagon". I walked back to the lounge again and looked at pictures of the Pentagon on fire. I went back to my desk, and called my best friend. I told him "turn the TV up - and stay on the phone. You're watching history as it happens - tell me what they are showing". I was on the phone with him when at 7:00 Arizona time the South Tower collapsed. I remember hearing my friend Steve say "its gone - the tower is gone". This was the third (and last) time that day I would make the reference to rumors. I stood up and literally ran back to the lounge again. About 60 seconds after I got back to the lounge, the tape was rolled again showing the collapse. I remember literally slowly moving towards the floor - and was actually sitting on the ground with my right hand over my mouth when the tower had finished collapsing. I sat for about 15 minutes before going back to my desk. When I got back to my desk, I had received an email from my brother in Michigan. It was very short and to the point. "What the f*ck is this? What's happening? Can you believe this?" I wrote him back a message saying "all is ok here. Everything will change. Talk to you soon". After the second tower collapsed, I stood in the lounge one more time. Our Chief Financial Officer (my boss) was in the lounge. As he walked by me, he simply said "its war, Craig. We're at war". He was right, but I didn't realize it at the time. It was at this time that the rumor came across about the car bombing at the State Department, and the rumor that Capitol Hill had been hit. Why would I not believe it this time - I had been proved wrong three times this day already. Our Human Resources Manager was in the room at the time. I walked over to her and said "Marci - this is bad". She nodded her head. I remember very clearly, and with tears welling up in my eyes, looking at her and saying "when do we start sending people home?". She again looked at me, nodded, and said "lets find Tim (our CFO)". My purpose for saying this wasn't because I was afraid for our safety. It was because with everything going on, and the rumors which were now beginning, I had no idea how bad things would get. If a major attack was just beginning on our country, I didn't want people being stuck at work and then fighting traffic home if an emergency were declared. We didn't send people home. Instead, we all sat at work and did nothing but listen to radio and watch TV that day. There was no point in calling anyone - everyone else we did business with had sent their people home. I did not leave until 5:00 eastern time that day. I remember being very angry leaving work, feeling that I had been made to stay at work when this monumental event was being broadcast. I spent that entire evening, and the next three evenings, doing nothing but watching TV. I slept 4 hours between Tuesday morning and Saturday evening. I dont feel my story is extraordinary. I do however feel that every story from September 11th is important. Some do not have the strong emotional impact that others do, yet all of the stories show the many different reactions of this country's citizens. The one last item I remember standing out on September 11th was shortly after the 2nd tower was down. When you looked at those escaping lower Manhattan that day, everyone was the same. What I mean by that is that most were covered with debris and dust from the towers. There were no blacks, whites, hispanics, asians. There were no rich or poor. All that existed where Americans, covered in the same dust, surviving the same event. Just the other day, 10 months later, I saw a good friend Angela Sales and, as is my habit, asked her where she was on 9/11. "I spent the day with you Steve." And it was true. I had completely wiped from my memory that Angela had been stranded at our midtown campus because the CUNY campus at which she worked was adjacent to ground zero. I had invited her to sit in my office on the couch and relax. But 10 months later, in some sort of strange coping mechanism, I find I have totally wiped out big pieces of that day, who was with me, what I did, even how and when I got home. "We just heard a plane went into the WTC. Do you think I should cancel my flight?" I told her it was just a freak accident and go on with business as usual. I immediately turned on my TV. I watched as the station had just started to replay the footage of the second attack on the WTC. I watched in horror as I realized we were under attack. But from where and whom we did not know. I frantically grabbed the phone to call my daughter's cell. "Get out of the airport NOW! Everything is not business as usual. I don't care if everyone else is boarding the plane. Leave now." She was the first to leave the terminal and was on her way home as I continued to watch. Then it happened. The first tower started to implode, then the second, then the Pentagon, and lastly brave passengers forced their plane down towards the earth to certain death. Americans watched in horror. All of America trembled with fear of the unknown. The WTC recovery effort started immediately, volunteers came from every State. She hurriedly told me that the World Trade Center had been "bombed". She was listening to the events on the radio. I told her I'd turn on the TV and get back to her. I immediately turned on the TV and saw the closeup of the towers. Thinking they had been (or at least one of them) had been bombed, I didn't think much of just seeing one of the towers. Next to the still standing tower was a huge cloud of smoke which I assumed the other tower was hiding behind. I had no idea it had already fallen. After learning that planes had slammed into both the towers, I brought my 2 girls in to watch the unfolding drama. As my wife and 2 girls watched, the second tower started to fall. I remember yelling, "It's falling!!!, It's falling!!!" I remember thinking that maybe just a few floors would collapse at first (while it was collapsing) but as it became clear the whole thing would fall, I became silent...the room was silent with disbelief. I remembered back to when I had gone to the top of the WTC in 1979 and 1983 and then I looked around to make sure I wasn't dreaming. I was about 4 hours late for work as I was transfixed by the TV. When I got back home that day, I sat my girls down in front of the TV to watch the President and took my camcorder out and videotaped them watching the news with me. I visited the site a month later (October 13, 2001) with my sister. The city had a haze over it (I'm not sure if that was the weather or the smoke still smoldering). I couldn't smell anything unusual as other people had reported. The police wouldn't let us within 2 blocks of the site yet we could still see the carnage from the roads leading to the towers. At one corner a blue tarp had been set up to keep people from viewing a certain section. I and a fewe other guys climbed the metal poles holding the tarp and peered over to see what was so interesting about that spot. What I saw was the facades of the towers still standing there. I took a picture as quickly as I could and left as there were others who wanted to see it too. The military would occasionally chase people off. I could still see debris here and there and remember seeing a layer of dust under the overhang of the post office box. I also remember seeing the insides of the stores next to us. Everything was covered in dust inside the stores as if was covered that day. The posters of those still missing was particularly disturbing. The day before (October 12, 2001) my sister and I were at the Pentagon. We were amazed when we drove right into the parking lot next to the disaster without being stopped. We parked very close to the devastation and got out of the car for a closer look. My sister started to film me with the Pentagon in the background. A blue tarp was also put up there but was mostly ineffective as we could still see everything up close. About 1 minute into filming we were approached by 2 military men in red berets with some sort of machine guns. They told me that they had to confiscate my camcorder tape. They pointed to a very small sign that said "no photography" or something to that effect. Ridiculous...they could have posted the sign when entering the parking lot. When I asked when I would get it back, they said "never". At this point I pleaded with them that I would just erase it but they gave me just 2 choices, give them the tape or go to jail. Good thing that was a brand new tape. We parked illegally near a hill where they said we could take pictures and we did so. Minneapolis Minnesota was in transition from Summer to Autumn and schools were in session at full energy in the area. The Twins captured the hearts of MN fans, the Vikings were struggling, and the other teams had not yet gotten underway in their seasons. MN was very much in a state of calm and the usual rhetoric that we see on the news each night, locally and nationally. We all know what the world was like. I remember what it was like, and I will not forget. I had just accepted a new job at a Catholic book shipping company in Saint Paul, Minnesota for part time work, and to make some money while I was in school every morning studying drafting, architecture, and Computer aided Design. I am originally from Woodbridge, Virginia, just 20 minutes from Washington. Though I was away in MN, Washington was near and dear to my heart, as was Virginia. Monday September tenth was a day of energy and crisp weather. After school, I hurried over to the shop to start my new job, where I packed boxes to be shipped out to customers nationally. SChool was going well, and I was excited for myself. I had great roommates and great times with friends in MN. How sudden I would need their ears and shoulders for weeks and months ahead. At the shop, I was able to leave early and head home to the household where we were to eat Dinner. I lived with John, Robert, Dave, Chirstopher, and Rex. I do not remember dinner that night, because I was more focused on the job I had, and the exam I was to take the next morning at school. So I studied all night long. Staying up until 2 in the morning and crawling into bed I thought of how tired I would be in the morning as we gathered to start the day with prayer. Tuesday September 11th, 2001 started like the past day, with breakfast and prayer. 6:30 downstairs to pray and get off on a good note. 7:00 I was to leave for school and get there by 8:00 for class. There was traffic and lots of it. Preparing for the exam, I had on some music as I let my self wander into a state of being naive about everything. It was a common occurence of mine to listen to the morning shows and especially 97.1 . I journeyed across the Mississippi River and into Minneapolis and then to Brooklyn Park. traffic eased, and I coasted through Brooklyn Park until... "we apologize for this announcement and sudden occurence, one of the TWIN TOWERS was hit by a twin engine airplane and smoke is rising from it slowly." the song played on... Superman by Five for Fighting at 7:50 a.m. thinking nothing of it, as a usual report with some curiousness, I scuttled to school for ten more minutes. Upon reaching school I went up to class and found a note. CLASS CANCELLED. Knowing that, I went to the car and fell asleep in it waiting for the next to start. AN hour of horror had passed when I awoke to the door slamming of a fellow student. It was 9:00. As I entered the school and saw empty chairs I went to find where the students were. The normally bustling break room was silent as words echoed from Peter Jennings as he relayed the news. I made my way in and saw a federal building on fire and it did not occur that the events were conected. Suddenly, I asked what was happening and it all came together, the report I heard was innaccurate and not right. Commercial airliners were hijacked and reeled into the towers and then one into my mothers office. The pentagon was billowing smoke left and right as federal workers were scrambling to safety. I wanted to cry, I wanted to yell. Instinctively, my hand reach for the phone and I was able to call my dad and calmy ask what was happening. Meanwhile som jerks in the room were laughing at it all quietly and I felt my heart sink. Thir mother did not work there I could have stuck my hand down his throat and yanked his heart out!! My father was there at his office in Arlington VA. he could see it from his office. three miles away. He told me that he was going to go find mom. I said for him to call me back at school, work, or home when he found her. I knew it would be a long day. Teachers started to see what I was experiencing and asked if I wanted anything. All I said was, I want my MOM to be alrite and go home from there safe. Everyone froze as I said that. Meanwhile, I was calm but angry inside. I had the nerve to go start a computer up and try to work. IT WOULD NOT HAPPEN. NOT FOR 2 more days. I paced and paced the halls. Talked to people with patience and calm. as I saw the towers fall, I knew thie world would change. I knew my life was different now. I knew there was a hidden horror among the nations and it was revealed in a cowardly barbaric fashion that calls for JUSTICE! at 11:30 I drove to work, because I needed something to base my day on that was good. I needed to work, and be productive. i wanted to watch the news, but wanted to keep my eyes fresh for other things. I had seen what had happened, and it was UGLY. I arrived late to work a bit and there was no problem with that. The owner was there working and I asked her to pray with me as I told her my story. She wanted me to go home... but I had to work and keep hope. it was quiet there that day. Not much happened. Then at 4:00 I went home and was curious about Mom. I tried the lines, but they were dead. I was worrying with hope and fear that my family was harmed. I managed to get fresh air all day as I needed to. at 5:30, dinner was made and we all were as statues, somber, reserved, and collected as we ate. John the house leader did not want the phone on, I objected. I was waiting for a call. At 6:30 p.m. the phone rang and all was silent. I took the call outside and it was my dad, and mom was home with alex. I was relieved but yet concerned. I was still in horrific shock! they let me eat, and we hung up. I told them I would call back after dinner and the prayer vigil at St. Thomas. We put the news on that night and watched with curiosity. HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN? WHY? WHATS next? WHEN? WHO? At 7:00 we went to Saint Thomas University. we gathered with others there to attend a prayer service. My friends were all consoling as I was very vigilant with explaining to them what happenend with a stance on personal tragedy and concern. That night, besides the glow of headlights in line for gas, and food, I wondered if it will all ever be the way it was before the atttacks. I think my answer is obvious. NO. For three days I did not do any schoolwork, I did nothing. I listened to the radio. i watched TV, I tried to Pray. I called home alot. I was numb from the horror, and willing to pause my life as time started over again. My mother went back to work a week later, and she remembers it well. I wouldhave loved to be there for her. And I was a few weeks later on October 4th 2001 I went home to see my parents. It was a trip I will never forget. I saw the hole in the wall, and the effort to rebuild, and the strength of the area. DC was more beautiful than ever. I was home. I recieved hope and care from lots... none more powerful than Mom and DaD. Itis my hope you read my story, and pray for my family. Thank you. I have never felt such desolation and despair. As I watched the news program and saw the second plane hit the Towers I could not believe what I was seeing. I was in a state of shock. Tell us your story: I just said to my mom tonite how I think the horrific events of 9/11/2001 is my generation's version of when President Kennedy was assassinated. I will NEVER FORGET where I was/exactly what I was doing...just as I'm sure every person alive during the time will not. I work just across the river in New Jersey on the top floor (6th) of a building which had clear awesome view of the towers daily outside my window. That day was a beautiful day weather-wise and everyone from my office was in that day for a company meeting at 9am - Thank God. I was on the phone with a close friend wishing her a happy 30th birthday around 8:40 when a co-worker ran down the hall 'a plane just hit the World Trade'. I told my friend to turn on the tv and opened my window blinds, all we could see was smoke b/c the building was obscured by the other. My best friend worked down in the WTC complex, so I hung up with my bday friend to call her and find out what was going on. By the time I hung up from leaving her a voicemail, the other plane hit. I didn't see it, but immediately looked out the window and just stood in shock. People from lower floors in our building began converging in our office to view the horror. Some people turned on tvs in the conference room and sat motionless, others - including myself - were frantic on the phone trying to reach loved ones who worked there. The person heading the meeting had the audacity to attempt to start it (he was from DC and for some reason wasn't as concerned at the rest of us even though The Pentagon had been attacked as well) around 9:45. No one was paying attention. Shortly after starting my boss was called out for a call & walked back in literally white as a sheet 5 minutes later 'the building just collapsed' she said and we all sat silent - a pin could have dropped on the carpet & we would have heard it. Seconds seemed like hours, then there was a mad dash by everyone for phones - which by now were completely inoperable - the only thing that worked with regularity was instant messenger. I was IMing a friend in Dallas pleading with him to call my best friend's house. My west coast boss somehow got through by phone and I had her start calling my friend. Thankfully around 11:30am I got in touch with her, she had just walked in from walking over the Brooklyn Bridge. I collapsed in my chair in tears. She worked in 4 WTC and began telling me how it was literally hell on earth. I thought I had made it through the tragedy without losing someone personally. Sadly, my neighbor across the street - just 42 years old - with a small daughter & wife died in the attack. He was in Windows of the World for a meeting that day, he didn't even work in the towers. He had the brightest smile, was always tending to his lawn and would scream across the street 'HELLO MONICA' anytime he saw me. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My day started out like any other day: wake up, get dressed, and have breakfast with the early morning news. Within the next few minutes my eyes would see the horrors to come. I switched on the television and hit channel 11. The first thing I saw were two familiar looking buildings, one with smoke rising out of it, the other looking normal. I didn't quite understand what was happening, so I decided to try another station. Flipping through every channel, I saw the same things: two towers-one fine, the other not. I remebered what was so familiar about them. They were the famous twin towers in New York and one of them had had a plane hit the side of it. Within five minutes, another plane flew into the second tower. Reporters were frantically trying to explain what had just occured. My first thought was, "This isn't happening. It isn't real." The problem was this was real, all too real. Well, I finished my breakfast and got ready to leave for school, the shock still not sinking in. During that day, news spread around school, announcements were made, and yet I still couldn't register the information. For the next few weeks the information was slowly sinking in. To this day I still remeber that plane fly straight into that building and what was left of the reck. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: As i awoke on Sept. 11th, I did what i usually do. I turned on the Television to catch the morning news. Over the year leading up to Sept 11th i had become something of a news-a-holic. Every moment that i had spare from school work i would be watching CNN or Headline news as i did school work. But on that morning as the local news was ending and TODAY was coming on the TV I saw a hazy brown picture of the World Trade Center as I had known them before Sept 11th, figures of elevated stature, massive giants, impenetrable to anything with a grandeur all its own. Smoke billowed from the north tower and I was immediately reminded of a vauge rememberance of a lesson i was taught in school earlier, of a plane striking the Empire State building. Concerned more with getting prepared for school and another grinding day ahead instead of the magnitude of the situation i went to brush my teeth. Overheard on the Television was Matt Lauer unknowingly giving out false information about the plane perhaps being a commuter jet. Just as i was finishing up getting ready, I heard a scream coming from my mothers bedroom. I ran to find my mother and my brother glued to the TV and as i looked up in horror to see another Jet smashing into the side of the South Tower, I thought, "Oh my god, We're under attack." Confused and crying, my mother insisted that we stay home today but minutes after the second plane struck my brother and i were off to school eager to hear what our history teachers thought of the situation, if we were going to war, if there was going to be a draft (our 18th birthday was rolling around), what was happening and who was responsible. As we arrived at school, many kids were unaware of what was unfolding in our country and we spread the word quickly that two planes had hit the World Trade Center. To both mine and my brother's amazement, some kids asked the question, "What is the World Trade Center?" As we sat in 1st period we learned of the Pentagon being attacked. The man who was reporting from the Pentagon was on a cell phone with NBC as the pentagon was struck and said something along the lines that he had heard a bang like a bomb or something and that he was trying to figure out what it was, he then proceeded to drop the phone and not speak for around 5 seconds. Well my classmates and I were sure that the pentagon had just blown up and that this man had been killed on National Television. It was then that he picked up the phone and told NBC that he wasn't sure what had just happened. We watched TV all day long at school and one thing sticks out in my mind the most. The most talented history teacher at my school immediately had suspicions who had done these horrific acts. Some thought that it was Palestine who had committed the acts, some of the dumber students said they thought it was Iraq but my teacher, Mrs.M said that she thought the only person that would have the means to do such a thing could only be Osama Bin Laden. She was right and I'll never forget it. She is a remarkably intelligent woman and the best history teacher i've ever had. As I drove home after school that day, i was emotionally exhausted from crying and from watching the news that day. I couldn't help but wonder if this, much like Pearl Harbor was for that generation, the end of my generations innocence faced to fight a war against a faceless, cowardly enemy and I thought that we much like our grandparents were ready to fight for liberty and freedom and that the United States would never give up on those values that made us who we are. I got up and took a shower, then turned on the TV to watch the morning news while I got ready for work. Pretty much all I could think about up to this point was what a wonderful evening my husband and I were going to have; it was our wedding anniversary. As I turned on my favorite morning station, they were showing a live shot of the World Trade Center, which had just been hit by an airplane. As I sat watching the smoke billowing out of the tower and listening to the commentary, I wondered what could have happened. Had there been some kind of mechanical failure that caused that plane to crash? And as I sat there transfixed to my TV screen, the unthinkable happened; another plane crashed into the second tower. At this point, I still wasn't thinking "terrorism"; perhaps the second plane couldn't see the second tower through all the smoke? The fact that we may be under attack didn't even enter my mind until the third plane crashed into the Pentagon. Like many other Americans, the rest of that day, September 11, seemed surreal. I drove to work listening to the news, hoping to hear some kind of good news. All I heard was that first one tower, and then the other, had collapsed. There was also another plane that crashed in Pennsylvania; they didn't know at the time if was related to the others or not at that time. I spent the rest of that day, like so many others were doing as well, on an emotional roller coaster. There was complete shock and disbelief, hope and heartbreak, and something I had never felt before; fear. As the day unfolded, and airports were shut down, governments were put on high alert, I couldn't help but wonder if this was going to be it; the end of the world. Being in my early 30's, I never thought I would see a war in my lifetime, much less that America would ever be attacked right here on the home-front. Could we ever feel safe again? As the days wore on, the heartache mounted as the tally for the victims rose higher and higher. Every American lost something on September 11, 2001. Some paid the ultimate price with their lives, while countless others had to deal with the tragic loss of someone they loved. Children lost their innocence, and most everyone else lost their sense of security. Through these terrible losses, one thing seemed to stay standing taller than ever; Pride. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was watching the Today Show when the planes hit the WTC. When the first one hit I knew somehow that it was not an accident. My mind wouldn't really allow me to believe it but the crude reality soon set in. The hardest thing to deal with is the knowledge that so many children are now without a parent, or maybe even two parents. It is so hard to believe that it could be so painful to us as Americans, and such a source of delight to those who perpetrated this horrible act. The reality of life is that all people do not see truth and justice and concern for others in the same way. I now know that most of the people that experienced this great lose personally will survive and possibly even flourish due to their experience. But there are the ones that will never recover and may find it too hard to carry on. I believe that our prayers should be fervently prayed for them. Life is hard enough without the senseless, cruel loss of a loved one in such a horrible way. I will continue to pray for the families and for this great nation, AMERICA!!!
