Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On Sept. 11, 2001, I was sitting in my dorm room, working on the computer, when my mom called me out of the blue. She sounded frantic on the phone and at first I couldn't figure out what she was trying to tell me. Finally, I heard her say, "Turn on the TV." So I did, and I was completely shocked by the images they were showing on the news. When they showed the planes crashing into the Trade Center and the people running and screaming on the sidewalk, all I could think to myself was, "How could this happen? Is this real? It seems like a scene out of a movie." The reality of it didn't hit me until my room mate said that she needed to call her boyfriend and make sure he was OK because he worked at the Pentagon, which was the site of the other plane crash. She was extremely upset because she couldn't get ahold of him because the cell phone service was down that day. It finally hit me that it was real and that real people were being affected by the tragedy. I fortunately, did not have any family members or loved ones working at the Trade Center or the Pentagon. The bus driver told us all the kids on the bus what had happened. he did not know the whole story. he only knew that two planes crashed into the twin towers. when i went home, i found more about what was going on i heard also that the pentagon was hit and crashed in pennylsavana. my life hasn't realy changed because none of my relatives or any one that i knew was in the planes or in the twin towers. i feel bad for all the peole that had died. i think that we should remember all the people that had died in the crash and those that were serouly injoured. all those people tha were in the plane that crashed in pennsvanna should remember. we should remember hoew brave there were when they tried to go and stopthe terroist that were going to crash into the white house. we should stop them from killing more more innocent people we should stop them for more security. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just started sixth grade when the terrorists attacks of Spetember 11, 2001, occured. School was going on as usual, but about ten o'clock, parents began arriving and taking their children home. At first it was slightly humorous, becuase every few minutes another one of my classmates would leave, and the class grew steadily smaller. The remaining students and I began speculating about the cause of the unexpected onslaught of parents, giggling as our ideas grew increasingly silly and farfetched. Eventuallly, the humor wore off, becuase we realized that the situation was serious. Teachers were spotted crying in the hallways. On our way back to our classroom, which was in a trailer outside, my friend pointed to the sky and exclaimed, "Wow, look at that!" My teacher's expression instantly changed, and she stared up in a panic, asking, "What, where?" My classmate replied, "The moon, it's out during the day." Our teacher tried to laugh off her minor panic attack, but we knew that something wasn't right. When we got back to our trailer, our teacher turned on the television to a news station. We saw images of a tall building in flames, but thought little of it, as fires occur somewhere almost everyday. It wasn't until our teacher finally decided to explain everything that we realized the significance of the images. She told us that she wanted to tell us the truth, despite the wishes of the school administration. The twin towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington had been hit by planes, which had been piloted by terrorists. Instantly, my classmates and I began to panic. I knew that my parents worked in D.C., but I had no idea where, and I feared the worst. For the rest of the day, we all went around in a semi-stupor. To my relief, my mother arrived at the end of the day to pick me up, which in and of itself would have alerted me that something was amiss, becuase I usually rode the bus home. The next few weeks, I went around as usual, but cringed everytime I heard a plane's engines roar overhead. It took several months before I was able to see jet contrails cross the sky without shuddering involunterally. Tell us your story: I was working as a payroll clerk for the Lake County, Indiana Sheriff's Department on the day of this tragady and the TV in my Commander's office happened to be on when the first plane hit. She screamed for us to come into her office and witness what was happening. We could not believe our eyes, that a horrible tragedy was occurring in the USA which we never dreamed would happen. When we finally understood the situation, everyone started telling about who they knew that worked in NY. Suddenly I came to realize that my daughter and son in law lived in New Jersey but both worked in the city. I immediately tried to find some way to contact their employers to see if in fact they were OK. Communications were down of course, so there was no way except to sit by a phone and hope I would get a call. I did receive that call in the evening from my daughter and found out she had been sent to another area of the city to work that day. My son in law was taking the Staten Island Ferry to work when he saw the first plane hit. His office building was destroyed and they were relocated but they were fine. It was an eternity waiting for that phone call and I can only imagine how the people felt that never did get that phone call saying all was OK. My heart and prayers go out to them all. I remember everyone's cell phones all started to ring within seconds of each other....disbelieving "What?!" and "Oh, my GOD!" was quiclkly followed by eerie silence. No one knew what to say or do. The following days and weeks were difficult for the obvious reasons and the added fact that my husband is in the Army. I couldn't come to grips with what had happened...the enormity of that day. Now, a year later, I still haven't come to grips with it, really. I did have a thought today, though. I thought how much hate was behind these acts. Hate for a country, a way of life, and for LIFE, in general. That, to me, is the one thing that I find both the saddest AND the hardest to understand. My father has lost his cousin William Arthur Gardener. Unfortunately, I never got the chance to know him but this has still had a huge impact on my life and those of my family. Let's see, the morning of that dreadful day, I had just gotten home from work, and had the news on to check and see how the weather was going to be, so I could dress my daughter accordingly.As I was preparing myself to get a little sleep before I started my daily errands, "BREAKING NEWS" flashed across my T.V. screen. At the time it was thought to be a little private plane that might have had some sort of misfunction or something. I remember thinking how horrible for those poor people, I watched a little longer before turning in for bed.I actually shut my set off right before the second plane hit the other tower. Upon waking up 2 hrs. later, I turned the T.V. back on and was in utter disbelief as to what was happening. I was filled with so many different emotions. An overwhelming sadness for all those people on the planes and what their last thoughts were, and my first reaction was to go and get my daughter out of school, the not knowing what if anything was going to happen next, I knew I needed her to be with me. Then I went to the store and proceeded to get some supplies for all those firefighters and policeman,and everyone else working round the clock to help those poor people, I too wanted to do what I could.May all those innocent people forever rest in peace. This will be a day of mourning for myself and family and everyone forever. We were going for consultation appointments, because there were some medical things we had to check into and go through in order for us to start a family, so we had apointments with a couple doctors. I had went into the bathroom to take my shower and get ready for our appointments, I turned on the radio as always, I heard Bob and Shari talking about what was going on, on the radio, I guess I wasn't beleiving what I was hearing, it was like I was in denial,sad, scarred, different feelings all at once, I had talked myself into beleiving it was an accident, then I remeber hearing the other tower had just been struck. I remeber still not wanting to believe what was happening, but also knowing this was serious and scarry, I dropped to my knees in the bathtub, teary eyed and scarred.I remeber hearing my husband yell,he was watching it on T.V. My husband came to the door and said "do you know what is going on", I told him I had been listening to it on the radio, when I got out of the bathroom I went into the living room, I was trying to ignor still what was going on as best I could, my husband had the T.V. on so it was hard. Then another explosion, the pentagon, I just knew this was world war three, what were we doing,going to try to bring a life into this world? My husband and I went ahead and got ready to go to Columbus, we listened to the radio on the way, I was clammed up, scarred and crying on and off on the way.Finally I was able to let out to my husband a little of how I felt, are we doing the right thing? How can we think about bring a life into this world, like this? Will the world even be here very much longer? I was very scarred.I'm sure my husband had alot of feelings also, well I know he did, but he was being strong for me at the time. We got through both of our appointments. We stayed in a hotel that night.We went to a tavern in the town we were staying,we talked and watched what was going on,on the T.V with everything. Then another fear hit me, my husband is a firefighter, very dedicated and good at his job.What if he was sent away from me, what if, what if. Well we made it through. My husband and I were married on September 18th, one week after the tragedy. and right now my husband and I are expecting twin boys, due Nov.7th,2002. Tell us your story: I can't explain my experience of watching everything occur on CNN while watching TVin a hotel room between jobs, while waiting for my new work visa to be approved. For weeks after wards I didn't sleep. Five five days I did not sleep at all. I lost friends in the WTC. I used to deliver baked goods at just about 8:45 every AM when I was at the ZCNY Greystone Bakery. One day, while driving up the New Jersey Turnpike, many years before, 30 or 40 years ago, I saw the WTC on the horizon and while studying it, I had a profound insight into how a building means and all the buildings I ever really loved, from the Parthenon to Frank LLoyd Wright's work in PA or Tokyo, or the cathedral in Toledo where Goya worked, or Swiss chalets where I played as a kid all came together in a new way, and now that WTC was gone. I had to say what it all meant to me including the love I have for New York and sacredness of the land in which in resides and which takes care of us, unbidden and unrequited but loyal and full of compassion. She was concerned for my youngest son who is in the Air Force. He called later to say hi and I love you mom and I won't be able to call back for a few days as we are going into a lock down on all the bases. I cried the rest of the day thinking of all those innocent people who were lost to their loved ones and hoping God gave them the strength to capture their memories and continue on with their lives. Horrified and in disbelief, I, along with some of my co-workers watched the event unfold via the internet. Also, on that same day via Delta's Flt. 593 I was too fly to St. Louis, Mo. However, my flight, along with hundreds of others, was cancelled that day. Realizing that my life had been spared, and wanting to do something to commemorate the thousands who had lost theirs-- the next day when I went to work I took a copy of my poem, No Greater Love. I had written it years earlier as a tribute to the soldiers in Desert Storm (and in 2002 it was awarded the Editor's Choice Award by the International Library of Poetry). My co-workers made copies and posted the poem in various areas on our floor, it was even published in the company's monthly newsletter. A year later, September 11, 2002, during the memorial service held at our church (an internal urging) led me to recite the poem, and I did! At the time I had never experienced war, fear, or national saddness as I did on this day and the weeks to follow. Being a new mom, I mourned with the thousands of moms who had lost a child in the attacks. Being a new mom, I was fearful with all the millions of moms who were fearful of the future for their children. One year later I still mourn and I am still fearful, but it hasn't gotten the better of me. In fact it has made me stronger, wiser, less naive, and proud to be an American. That morning I had gone in and took a shower and when I got out I finished dressing then went into the livingroom to see some of the news. I always turned on Fox News, to see what happened the night before. When I saw the first images of the first plane. I yelled out to my mom that a plane crashed into the world trade center. As I was watching I saw the second plane coming and I yelled out to my mom again that they were showing what happened. When it shot up in flames. I said to my mom isn't there 2 towers and she said I think so. That is when I said that was a second plane when I saw both towers on fire. I was thinking to myself right then Osama Bin Laden. Because like 3 days before there was this thing on tv about him. I was like thank God that this is over if it is. Then my mom was like we need to go. As we were driving to school I turned on the radio to hear what they were saying. I was like "oh my God". When I got into first period I realized I was late. So I ran to class. I went up to the student teacher that was learning how to teach, and asked her have you heard what happened. She said no what. I leaned over to her and whispered, 2 planes just crashed into the world trade centers. Her jaw just dropped. Then she said to tell the class. I did, about that time the teacher walked into the class and said it again. We told her that I had already told them. Then we turned on the tv and that is when we heard about the pentagon and they were saying that there was bombings at the pentagon. And one of the local channels were saying that there were bombings at LAX and all over the country and oil well were on fire. On that tragic day, September 11, 2001, I was working on the floor reviewing math with a small group of students. The rest of the students were working on math at their desk or at other places around the room. Just before 10:00, my assistant principal stuck her head in the door and asked me to meet her in the hall. I reminded the children to stop working and then stepped into the hall. The assistant principal seemed very grave. She quickly told myself and a few other teachers she has assembled that the Pentagon and World Trade Center Buildings had been attacked. She instructed us not to turn on the television because the coverage was graphic. Then, she hurried on to share with the next group of teachers. I turned, took a deep breath and whispered a quick prayer before returning to my children. As a teacher, we are sometimes very issolated from the world. The rest of the day, I got tiny bits of information from parents picking up their children. At the end of the day, I sat down with my kids and briefly shared with them what I knew. I knew that many of these kids go home to an empty house. My fear was that they would turn on the televison and be terrified. The mature discussion that followed amazed me and inspired me. These children provide a wonderful promise to our country's future and that is why I teach. I was to fly to New Hampshire to meet up with the love of my life and we were going to drive across country back here to sacramento and start our lives together. I was asleep in bed when I got the call that put my life on hold and made time stand still. Safe in my bed I hear the words "basically, the world trade center is gone". It wouldnt sink in. I run to my television and turn it on and the images took the wind out of me. Im 21 years old, people of my generation have enjoyed such luxury when it comes to national saftey. We didnt have nuclear worries, or bombing drills at school, we were around for the Gulf war, but at an age where we didnt really understand it. Wars were fought away from us and we were here safe and spoiled by living without fear. When I saw the destruction on that morning, all of this crumbled and it finally sank in. The stories that older people would tell me about Pearl Harbor, and how I never really understood their fear or their sadness. Now I understand. There is a great mourning in my heart, even a year later, for those who gave their lives. They were a sacrifice, pawns to a cruel and heartless killer, but they will not be forgotten, their lives will not be forsaken. On september 12th the planes were grounded, the skies were silent, the air felt wrong, the world felt wrong. I was numb, I was mourning and my dreams and plans were on hold.
