SO i walked through the living room to my parents room. When i entered i saw my mom and she looked very shocked. As i went to sit on the bend next to my mom she said, "The World Trade Centers just got run into by a plane." I didnt think much of it because at the time i didnt even know what the World Trade Centers were. For the next week or so at school it seemed like that the World trade center bombing was all that we talked about. It wasn't very far into my personal freedom and self discovery. all I wanted to do was stay in bed that day. Instead I took my shower, and dressed for my writing class. I was on my way out, when my friend Joanna told me not to bother. "Class has been cancelled," She said with a grimmace on her face. I brightened at once. At that point all i wanted to do was redress into sweatpants, call the man i loved, and go for a satisfying work out at the gym. "Why?" We both ran Into our friends room to watch CNN. this was the only time I ever remember watching CNN at school. Oh, my god....It was all that I could think. I am not a religious person. I don't believe in anything, really. But that one time I prayed. I have only truly prayed a handful of times in my life A close friend of mine once said that god is not a convienance. And I agree, If he exists he deserves more respect than I have given him, but at that point of devistation. I am not a republican. But that day I looked to the president for guidence. He offered very little. That day, All I wanted to do, was redress into sweatpants, call my boyfriend, and work out at the gym. And I did all three. My father was supposed to be there that day for a meeting. And although my love lived in cleaveland, his father worked at the port authority. I couldn't get through to my father. I called Chris's mother. and asked if she was alright. My sister called me telling me that our very close family friend Ed Miller was probably dead. He worked on the 70th floor of tower two. He was the man who taught me my favorite game. he came to our holidays. he had a wife and a family. what would they do with out him? I could not deal wiht the flood of emotion I was feeling. I wanted to give blood, but they didn't want it at that point. Traffic was too heavy. The incomming flood of patients was too great. What would happen to the people responsible? What would happen to their associates. How do you deal with a situation in which you are completely helpless? You can't. So i went to the gym to work off my fear. It did very little. I had my cellphone glued to me the whole time, trying to get in touch with my brother in boston, my boyfriend in cleaveland, and my father in new york. most lines were down. that night I found out they were all fine. Ed, who had been told to go back to his desk after the first strike, evacuated against orders, and walked down the 70 flights of stairs. My love's father had luckily been sent to brooklyn that morning in business. My own father in the traditional New Jersey predicament was on the New Jersey Turnpike stuck in traffic. He saw the planes crash in two towers from the road. its been a while since then, but its not something one easily forgets. I wasn't even 18. Now I am 20. Not much older, really. I still feel like a little girl. Everything thats happened should be left in the past. We should be given the opportunity to heal, but nothing has happened but a need for revenge. I witnessed the hate and the abuse of the Muslims on our very diverse college campus, and i was ashamed to be an american. Today, we are going after Iraq. Being a Jewish American, I am not about to complain. However, the government has wanted to do this for years, and never had just cause to enter. The patriotic need for revenge has lead to the invasion of Iraq, which is good. And the patriot act, which is bad. lets hope that we learn from our mistakes and eventually follow a path to peace. Tell us your story: On tuesday September 11, 2001 I only had two classes that morning, so when I came home, at about 8:45, after hearing the announment from our principle in my English class that two planes had just struck the World Trade and Pentagon, I really didn't think too much about it to be honest. I just figured it was another small bombing or something of that sort, until I flipped on the TV and saw what was going on. But even then, watching it all occur live, right before my own two eyes, I still didn't believe it. Maybe it was too much Hollywood influence or just flat out shock, but either way I just sat glaring in front of the TV for hours at all that was going on so many thousand miles away. I saw each tower come down live and people running in shear terror, but it still did not register. I remember going back for football practice and having it cancelled, then coming home under spooky, airplaneless sky's, something I've never witnessed in my entire life. It was just too quiet. That night my family and I talked about it for a long time over dinner, but the reality still hadn't sunk in. Days of coverage turned into weeks and weeks into months, but the reality never really hit me. Then, in about January I was flipping channels one night and came across another September 11th special and for some reason I decided to watch it for a few mintutes because they were doing a music video type segment. One picture struck me so hard I'll never forget it as long as I live. It was supposedly a color photograph of a firefighter covered in ash literally from head to toe and he was down on one knee with one hand on the ground and two tears streaming down his face through the ash. That's when the reality of it all finally hit me. That just doesn't happen. New York City firefighters, New York's Finest, dont sit down and cry when something goes wrong, it just doesn't happen! So, that's when I truly realized the significance of it all and I'm not even able to describe the feelings of emotion I felt that day and never will. Tell us your story: I am in sales for a relocation company, and was pulling up to a potential customers home when the reports of the firt plane were comming on the radio. Like many people I had an inmage in my head of a little prop plane bouncing off of the building and the sad notion that a few people may have been killed. Little did I know...I entered Julie's home to go on with my day, and saw the live footage on the today show. This was worse than I had pictured, and this woman I have never met was standing there with tears in her eyes telling me her brother worked in the adjacent building. I didnt ever pay any attention to the WTC so I had almost forgot there were two towers.....Thats when the 2nd plane streaked across the screen. I remember standing there stunned for what felt like hours, realizing this woman may be watching her brother die on live television, feeling out of place in her home, figuring out that this was no accident, and wanting to call my wife and new baby to ensure their safety all at once. She was in a similar frame of mind I am sure, so we did the only thing that came naturally, embraced and cried. I spent 4 hours at her home that morning. We are friends today, brought together by a horrible moment. She says I kept her sane through the worst moment of her life, but I think it may have been the other way around. Tell us your story: My one and only journal entry that I have written: Tuesday, September 11, 2001 | 6:37 p.m. When I woke up around 6:40, I went into my regular routine. I walked drowsily to the bathroom and took a shower. I got out, wrapped up in a towel, and searched the usual places to find clean clothes to wear. I chose a pair of shorts with a [San Francisco] 49er T-Shirt. Then I trudged over to the kitchen and finished off my pancakes from Sunday. I read the paper while I ate. After that I took my pills and brushed my teeth. Now that I was ready for school, I focused on other things that needed to be done. I had Mom get out the [high school's class schedule] booklet with all of the classes inside. I needed to find a one semester class to sign up for during 4th period in the second semester. I sat down with a notepad and wrote down classes that sounded appealing. [My brother], who was in his room with the door open, yelled, ?[Hey], turn on the news!? Though it sounded like something bad had happened, I didn?t know what it was about. So I ignored him. Then he came flying out of his room, saying, ?Turn on the news!? I realized he was headed toward the TV and half-walked, half-ran towards the TV. [My brother] had the channel on MSNBC. The World Trade Center had collapsed. ?Oh, dang,? I said, taken aback by the video clips of the tower collapsing. I ran into Mom and Dad?s bedroom to find Mom. [My brother] was right behind me. We found her sitting on the floor by her bed, looking through papers. We told her the news, and the shock was evident upon her face. We all went back into the family room to find out more. The details flowed in slowly. I heard about two planes crashing in. I heard about the Pentagon being struck. But the whole situation was so bizarre that it was still hard to fathom the devastation that had just occurred. When it was almost time to go to school, we had just found out that 50,000 people worked at the World Trade Center. I was flabbergasted. Incredible, I thought. [I figured at least 40,000 were still in the building when it collapsed. I didn't realize that there was a long enough span of time between the hit and the collapse for most to get out.] But we had to get our stuff for school, so everyone grabbed her stuff and started to leave. Mom was, of course, a bit rushed, and [my sister] threw a fit while Mom was getting her ready for school. [My sister] was screaming, but I tried to ignore her and got into the car. On the way to school she still threw a fit, but we were soon at our ?drop-off point,? and my brother and I got out for school. I put my books in the Sunday School room [across the street from the high school] and headed to Geometry class with Mr. P. Everyone was already talking about the tragedy in class. Then PNN, the school?s own news team, came on with the announcements for the day. After PNN the discussion continued, as Mr. P looked on the Internet to try to find more information. I told everyone that I thought Osama Bin Laden was behind the attacks, since he had recently claimed that he would soon attack the United States. Mr. P found a report that said that a Palestinian group had claimed responsibility for the attack, but later he found another report denying that statement. A kid in class made some stupid joke about the attack, but Mr. P quickly put an end to that by getting angry at the kid for trying to make a joke about a tragedy. Mr. P went on with regular math class, though, and we reviewed for a chapter test tomorrow. My classes went on throughout the day, with everyone soliciting the opinions of their friends. Some of the teachers kept radios on to keep updated. Other teachers cancelled all plans for the day, choosing instead to let the class watch the news channels report on the situation. Such a thing happened in my 6th period class, Tech Core I. All afterschool activities were cancelled, and students were told both by teachers and over the PA system to go straight home after school--- don?t hang around. When I got home I sat down with [my mom and brother], watching the latest reports. In Tech Core, I had seen reports that the World Trade Center Building 7 was on fire and was likely to collapse. At home, I found out that indeed Building 7 did collapse. The video clip of the collapse was incredibly devastating. It had gotten to the point where I could no longer watch the buildings collapse. It was too sad. Palestinians, meanwhile, are celebrating in the streets of their country, and Osama Bin Laden is hiding out somewhere. I watched reports until about 4:30, when I left to work on homework. Even though a national emergency had erupted, I still had homework due tomorrow. I stopped briefly to watch President Bush address the nation. I also ate dinner, and then wrote this letter. The sadness that I feel today cannot be describe. America has been devastated. I work for an ad agency and we were in the beginning stages of our weekly Production Meeting when the phone rang. It was the president of our company, ironically enough, on the way to the airport to pick up his wife who was coming in from Florida. He asked to be put on speaker and said "Turn on the TV, we're being attacked! A plane just crashed in to the Twin Towers." Like most people, we were in utter shock and total disbelief. Images of a nuclear war instantly clouded my head. My only thought was "Holy shit. This is it. World War Three." Once we turned on the TV, we all sat there, silent, every so often asking "Why?" or "How?" Soon after that, I started making calls to my friends in Manhattan. One could see everything from her office and said the city was in utter chaos, even as far north as the Flatiron District (Chelsea). One friend lives across the river in Jersey City and had a perfect view of the the Towers. She was, as usual, late to get to work that day and heard the first plane hit. As she went to her living room, she started clicking off pictures, not really knowing what happened, just that there was a lot of fire and smoke. As she sat there watching the debris and fire, plane two came into full view and rammed right into the Tower. She told me on one of the few connections out that NY had that she felt it was some dream. Nothing seemed real. The whole day at work, all I could think about was Planet of the Apes, when Heston finds the Statue of Liberty on the beach. My mind reeled with anxiety about which building or city was next to get it. I seriously thought a nuclear bomb was set. This was way too planned and I just knew more evil followed. For the next 2 days, I stayed home, like most people, numbed by what I'd just seen. I was glued to the TV trying to get as many viewpoints as possible. I wanted answers, like most of us. While I was not a fan of Bush, I waited to see how this rich kid was going to handle this. W did a great job of assuring us everything would be fine, despite the tremendous loss. Not knowing how acts of war are strategized or formulated, I'm a bit let down that we cannot find OBL and we tolerate Saddam. Bush needs to step up and get the world's great nation back on top. We had our asses handed to us by some well-planned terrorists who don't work in our slow-moving beuracratic world. Time to look at how we do things so this doesn't happen again. With 9/11/02 coming soon, my faith in our country is not what it once was. I hope W or our entire government gets it together. Because we all know they are planning something else. I was sitting there talking with my friends and doing my work. Then all of a sudden we heard that a plane had crashed into the twin towers. That is such a shame that they think killing people is going too make them look like winners. As a nation grieves we find ourselves defending them with pride. We're a nation of survivors,with one heart we share a tear. But we live too serve the memory,not giving in to fear. Though they try too take security with the things they've done and saud. All their acts of inhumanity bring unity instead. So we stand here as a family. One heart,one soul,one voice. We are challenged by this moment, and united here by choice. Sept 11 changed many of othe lives especially mine. I am now living day by day instead of month by month. I look at what I have and know that I am so thankful too still have my family and friends here with me. But there is still a hole in my heart because people have died, not just any people but innocent people that belonged too a great family that leave kids or loved ones. That might have not got too say good bye. So people please tell your loved ones how u feel about each other each day because they may not be there the next day. I heard Katie Couric speaking about the crash into the Towers and thought, that's strange why is she talking about 1993 all over again. When all of a sudden, I sat down to eat breakfast, I realized, no this is today and it's happening right now. I immediately called my older sister to tell her thank God she doesn't work there anymore b/c it is being bombed. AS the day progressed, my 3 month old and me sat and watched and watched... totally disbelief. Dreadfully sorry for those who died, those who lost their loved ones... In fact, one year later, I'm still crying over the events of that day. Wished it obviously never happened. I'm in awe of our President and of Mayor Guilani. I think their resolve and strength has been a tremendous help in getting our Nation together and keeping us moving forward to a better, safer country. I thought to my self this could not be an accident, then I heard that another plane had hit the other tower and that removed any doubt that something was very wrong. Tell us your story: I had just got to work when Michael Price, a fellow co-worker came in and told us a plane had just crashed into one of the twin towers. We got a small tv and everyone in the office crowded around it to hear what had just happen. Before we could say anything, the second plane hit. Everyone was in a dazed at the scenes on the television. It had dawn on me that today is my only sister's birthday. I had to gather my thoughts to call her to say "Happy Birthday" after all that had just happen. She wasn't of course in good spirit but was grateful for the reminder. She stated we need celebrate her birthday on a different day of the month. We end the conversation with I love you! When we heard of the plane coming from Boston that had crashed also, we learned one of our co-workers were on it. Her name was Jane Simpkins. This tragedy really hit home then, to know someone close to us had perished. We will forever keep her in our hearts. "I just want say that God has kept us here for a reason. Still dumbfolded and half asleep, I heard the shivering voice of a relative that New York was being attacked and that 50,000 people had died. I couldn't believe what I was being told and hoped that this was just a cruel jokes. Before I could go to the living room to turn on the TV, I got a second phone call from my husband who was deployed. When I finally turned on the TV, the images of the towers burning, the planes deliberatly crashing into them, then the other news about the Pentagon and Pennsylvenia were completly unreal. All I could think about was why the pilots who were flying these planes, asuming that it was a hijacked plane and the pilots having guns hold to their heads; why in the world would they crash these planes into the heart of New York? Into our hearts? When I first came to the United States 13 yrs. ago, walking in downtown Seattle, between the high rise buildings, it took my breath away. I was all dazzed by the magificant genious of creating such a beautifull reach into the skies. I felt as if I could have walked up the buildings like super(wo)man of some kind. Why was this happening? September 11th has been often portraited as an attack against us as Americans, but it was much more than that! It is the clash between the ages; our modern version of the clash between neanderthales and homo sapien sapiens perhaps. My child sometimes ask me why this happened, I'm not sure if I can comprehend the hate of these people. And how to explain such a thing. I ask my elders "what is happening?". One German friend of mine; a philosoph, an active pacifist and a retired physician, a WWII survivor, told me that he's happy that he is not as young as we are and that it was rather unlikely that he'd be topped with something worse than September 11th during his remaining lifetime. Sal, my soon to be husband was living with me for about 10 months by then. He had moved in with my family in November 2000 because of a strained relationship at home with his mom. My parents opened their home and hearts to him, and so he moved in. Sal had been working for EMS of the FDNY for about a year by then. He had gotten hurt on the job around the same time he came to live with us, and so he was out on disability. We had gotten engaged on Christmas Eve of that same year. Sal had lots of friends, and they had become my friends too. One of his closest friends, John was going to be the best-man at our wedding. Another one of his friends Gibb, was to be a groomsman, and many others were to attend our wedding in November. All of these friends worked for the FDNY. We were a tight group. We hung out every week. There was a bond there, a bond developed from things they had scene and experienced on the job that regular people never saw. Bodies, sick, dying even dead, births and miracles and the lack of respect the community gave them. These things bonded them to each other and created a brotherhood. September 11, 2001, it was early, so early that I just threw on a pair of sweats and my sneakers instead of taking a shower. I could do that when I got back. I wasn?t working at that time so I was in no rush to get anywhere. Sal, now recovered from his injury, had to catch the 9am Staten Island ferry to Manhattan that morning because he had an interview in Brooklyn for a desk job in the FDNY. From Manhattan, Sal would hop on the subway over to Brooklyn. Sal put on his dress blues for his interview that he was very excited for, and we got into my car and started our drive over to the ferry terminal. It took about 10 minutes to get to the ferry from where we lived. We left around 8:40am. We chatted in the car about the interview, and about what time I would pick him up. We were driving down on Richmond Terrace which runs along the water on our way to the ferry and we turned on the radio to Z-100, our local top-40 music station, to listen to the morning show. When we turned on the station there was news chatter, and the DJ came on and said ?you are listening to continuing news coverage of what has just happened, a plane has crashed into the World Trade Center at 8:46 am?? I looked at Sal, and he looked at me and we both said skeptically, ?no, this has to be a joke or something. One of those skits like Howard Stern does.? Then as we turned the bend on the Terrace to a point where we could see the twin towers, we saw it, smoke, thick black smoke coming from the top of World Trade Center Tower 2. I said to Sal ?Oh my God this is for real.? As we drove along the terrace we couldn?t help but just stare in disbelief. I thought to myself, ?wow the firemen are really going to have a tough time with this one, that?s up on the high floors and I bet the elevators are not working. At least with the last major fire at the towers it was on the ground level and below.? Then Sal said, ?When I get over there if they need help, I?m going. I won?t go to the interview.? My heart dropped, I always knew his job could be dangerous, after all when he worked EMS he wore a bullet proof vest everyday to work at his Battalion in Brownsville Brooklyn. But he was off today, and he had not been back at active duty for months. I forgot what this feeling felt like, worry. I pulled up to the passenger drop off at the terminal and kissed Sal goodbye, I told him to please be careful and to call me to let me know when he gets over there if he was going to the towers or if he was going to the interview. He got of the car and ran down the ramp into the terminal, and I pulled away. I continued to listen to the radio as I drove home. I got about a ? a mile away when the announcement came over the radio that the City of New York had issued an emergency level call to all city workers, (police, firefighters, EMS) to report in to their stations or the station closest to them no matter if they were off, on vacation or out on sick leave. Everyone had to report in. I pulled out my cell phone and tried to call Sal but all I got was a fast busy. I kept trying as I drove home along the terrace. Finally I at least got his voicemail and left him a message about the emergency call of all city workers. I got home and ran into the living room of my house, I turned on the TV right away and it was on every channel. I ran upstairs to my parent?s bedroom; my Dad was home and was getting dressed. I said to him, ?Did you hear what happened?? He said no, and I proceeded to tell him as much as I knew and the fact that Sal was maybe heading over to the scene. We both went back down stairs and my Dad sat down in his chair and I sat on the floor right in front of the TV. Within minutes there was an explosion at tower one that the reporters couldn?t figure out. It was 9:03am. Then as if someone viewed the tape from a different angle the reporter said another plane had hit the towers, this was terrorism, not an accident. I couldn?t believe it. The flames and smoke coming out of the tower, my hand went to my mouth and I gasped at the thought of all those people inside the towers. I had been in those towers only a few short months before the attacks when I worked for a company that had clients on the 78th floor of tower 2. I had admired the beautiful view from their windows one morning when I had an appointment at their offices. I wondered if the people I had met were alive or dead. I picked up my cell phone and tried to call Sal. I couldn?t get thru. I grabbed the house phone and tried to call, I still couldn?t get thru. I started getting nervous. I knew that he was supposed to be on the 9am ferry and that he would be getting to Manhattan around 9:25am. He would then probably make his way over to the towers which were a quick walk away from the ferry terminal, especially now that two planes had crashed into the tower. As my father and I watched the TV all I could think about was Sal. We watched as reporters showed people on the street bleeding and crying. We saw them re-play the crashes over and over again. We saw them replay the people standing in the middle of the street staring at the towers. The streets I had walked down everyday when I worked on Wall Street just a few months earlier. I kept trying to call Sal. I either got his voicemail or a fast busy. 9:38am, the reporters stated that another plane had just crashed into the Pentagon. It felt like a dream. Could this many horrible things happen in such a short amount of time? What was next? They news reporters were speculating the White House, the Capital Building? All I could still think about was Sal. I figured by now he was over in Manhattan and making his way over to the towers. Every time they showed they crowd of people on the streets, I looked for his face. I looked for his dress uniform that he was wearing. They were now talking about the people who were jumping. They showed clips of the side of the building where it looked like debris was falling, but it was actually people jumping, jumping to their deaths. What was it like up there that the thought of jumping was better than staying on the floor you were at? I couldn?t imagine. 9:59am, the south tower falls. I think my heart stopped at the moment. The only thought in my mind was, ?Sal?s dead. The tower fell and he is there and he?s dead.? My mouth opened to say the same thing out loud but nothing came out. I knew that by now he had enough time to get over to the scene. I knew that he would be there helping whatever way he could. Tears were coming down my face. My father was crying too. I sat there on the floor in front of the TV thinking, ?I?m supposed to get married in 2 months and my fianc? is dead.? Finally words came out of my mouth and all I could keep saying was ?Oh my God, Oh my God, he?s dead, he?s dead. I know it.? My Dad tried to comfort me saying that we don?t know that for sure, and not to jump to any conclusions. It wasn?t helping me. I picked up the phone and tried to call him again, nothing, no dial tone. I tried my cell phone, fast busy. I couldn?t stop crying. They kept showing the tower fall over and over again and with each replay it was like my heart was being ripped out of my chest over and over again. 10:06am, Flight 93 crashes in a field in PA. The reporters say the think it was heading for the White House. I?m still trying to call Sal, still no dial tone, only fast busies on my cell. They show clips of the tower falling, the thousands of people running down the middle of the street. Running scared, panicking, screaming, and crying. They show scenes after the dust settles; it looks like a nuclear bomb went off. There is dust everywhere, on everyone and everything. All you can hear from the clips is this strange beeping, almost like the beeps are singing to each other. I know what it is; it?s the emergency locater beacons of the firefighters when they haven?t moved for longer than a specified number of seconds. It helps locate a down firefighter in a fire situation. 10:28am, the north tower falls. Now I am a mess. I?m shaking and crying uncontrollably. Again I try to make the words come out but nothing, nothing comes out. Finally I say ?that?s it, now he?s really dead, if he didn?t die when the first one fell then he?s definitely dead now.? All I could think about was how close we were to our wedding, what I would I do without him? My father didn?t know what to do with me. What happened over the next 20 minutes is a blur. I never left the floor in front of the TV. I watched the footage of the people running again, the cloud of smoke, the towers falling over and over again. I went kind of numb. Then at the front door I hear a key unlocking the door. The door opened and it was Sal. I didn?t know what to do first. I was so happy to see him, alive standing here in the living room. I truly thought he was dead. I wanted to kiss him, hug him, and never let him out of my sight again. Sal had other plans. He came flying into the house running upstairs yelling, ?I have to get my stuff, I have to go, I have to get to the station!? I wanted him to slow down, I wanted to hold him. He was in sort of a panic. He was so focused. It was if he made himself think of what happened that he would fall apart. I asked him what happened, how did he get here? He said that when he got down into the ferry terminal the police were shutting down the service. They saw him with his uniform on and asked him to help them evacuate the terminal. He helped them get everyone outside. The 8:30 boat was the last boat they let go over, he never left Staten Island. He told me how he saw the towers fall while standing on the promenade of the terminal with everyone else. He told me how people were screaming, crying and passing out. H e said that an Arab looking man was on his cell phone and laughed about something, and that a couple of business men saw this and started to beat the Arab man up and the cops did nothing to stop them. A bus driver saw him and asked him where he had to go, he told him where we lived, and the bus driver drove Sal as close to our house as he could, non stop. He ran the rest of the way. I helped Sal get his gear together and I drove him over to the main fire station on the Island. From there he would go where ever they needed him. Again I kissed him goodbye and he ran inside. I really don?t know how I made it home from there, I could barely see from the tears in my eyes. Tears of joy that he was alive but also tears of sadness for the thousands of people who most likely just died. That night I went over to my girlfriend?s house whose boyfriend, John was with Sal and the rest of our friends who worked for the FDNY. We waited for word for to come that each one of them was accounted for and safe. It was long into the night before we got word on the last one that he was ok. Sal, John and the rest of the guys would do 12 hours shifts for the next few weeks while the search and recovery continued for possible survivors. Sal even spent a couple of days down at the site helping with the clean up during the weeks that followed September 11th. That day will never leave either one of us no matter how many years may pass. I don?t know if I want it to leave me, I think that because of that day, I value Sal and our relationship more than I ever would have, if it never happened. Like most of my classmates in our rural Pennsylvanian school, I just couldn't believe what I saw on the television. My initial thoughts were, "This is so unreal. It can't be happening." It just seemed like something in a movie, only worse. I don't even think a movie director could come up with a series of events as devastating as the ones that unfolded on that dreadful day. There are so many things that go through your mind when you see something so drastic occur. You just have to wonder, "Why?" We live in a nation where everything seems so calm, so serene. Other than the shootings and robberies that occur in cities and other metropolitan areas, we really aren't aware of the horrible things that go on in the world. It's true that we learn about the conditions of third-world countries in World Cultures class, and hear about the conflicts of the Middle-East on CNN, but we really don't get to experience these happenings first-hand and really feel what those people feel. Well, now we did, and to tell you the truth, I'd rather not have to go through something like that ever again. I must admit that September 11th really did not have that great of an effect on me. Obviously it was tough to go through, and emotionally exhausting to think about all of the people that died, but I never really saw what happened. The news reports and video clips do no justice to the real thing. Part of me regrets not physically being in New York City when it all happened. I know it must have been a terrible thing to watch, but it's a part of our history, and unless you were actually there when the planes hit, or when the buildings fell, you really don't know what it was like. In addition to not experiencing the reality of the tragedy, I also had no connection to any of the people that died in those buildings, which is something I'm proud to admit. Because of this, I really did not feel the sorrow that many of the people I know have felt. New York City today is a very different place. The disappearance of the buildings has blemished the city skyline, and still brings tears to the eyes of our nation's citizens every day. One thing I will regret is never having had the opportunity to view the "Twin Towers." There was one time in my life when my family took at trip to the Statue of Liberty and I was able to see the city from a distance. However, it was a cloudy day and the towers were just fuzzy giants across the river. Since the day of terror, I have been lucky enough to visit New York City. All that remains of the towers, however, is a large hole. In the future, I hope that all Americans will remember what we have been blessed with. The rights we have and the possessions we own are things that we take for granted. It's time that this changes. Our country is an amazing place, and there's no place that I'd rather be. I am an at home mom with a 9 year old daughter (who was 8 then). My husband and I woke up to the normal alarm clock and turned on the television to catch the weather forecast for that day. When we found our local news was not on and that the national news was talking about some kind of fire in New York, we figured that it was "just" a fire. We sat watching in horror as the details came in. I remember seeing the second plane hit. I told my husband "I think somebody is attacking us". Here in Washington State we have Boeing, my husband works accross the street from one of their plants. I remember the terror I fealt watching him drive away to go to work. "What if there are more planes?" I asked myself. I kept my daughter home from school that day. I spent alot of the day trying to explain to her why someone would do such a thing. I still can't explain it. I didn't cry...I didn't cry untill she was in bed and asleep. Then I lost it. I cried for the people who died, I cried for the people who lived, I cried for my daughter. I tried to figure out how I was going to raise my daughter to be a loving person when all I could feel was anger. I was so confused and sad. The only thing that has gotten me through this last year was something that my daughter said that evening when I kissed her good night. " Mama, don't be sad. Think of all the new angels we have now." Tell us your story: I was off that day when i got a phone call from one of my ex co workers to ask me did i have the t.v. on? i said no she said cut it on and call me later and tell me what you think well I did and then i began to cry because i know that i have a babay brother that is in the national guards and my father is a retired colonail out of the army and i knew in my heart that they would call both of to war my father and brother are both nurses for the military. i cried i started to call all my family especailly my grandmother and she cried and said what am i going to do i've been threw pearl harbor with your grandfather i am so scared and i feel so helpless people have lost alot of family i hope things get better. so i told her to pray that we will be ok. i told her grandma ilove you and i will keep in touch stay in pray.love you tell every body i said i them. she said ok. then i callled my dad he said he was waiting to see if he had to leave but did not get a call my at the time was in japan so neither one went. but in all this tragic event hit every family regaudless of what culture. what i want all the familys to know that lost loved ones is that all my prays are with and may god bless you threw this time of tragic. may god be with you and also with me. Tell us your story: As usual, on September 11th, I got up and checked the news on CNN.com and the weather on The Weather Channel over breakfast and coffee ... it was just before 7:45 AM Central Time when I turned off the computer and TV to get ready for work ... Driving to work, as usual I didn't have the radio on, singing along to a cassette tape instead. I felt amused because there was an older fellow driving a pick-up truck 25 mph on a street where traffic generally goes 45... it wasn't until later, that I realized he must have had the radio on in his truck and that was why he was driving so slow ... I got to work, and learned what had happened. My department digitizes video so we have a TV for playback of VHS. I arrived at work in time to begin to absorb what had happened before watching the 2nd tower fall ... My apartment is about 6 miles southwest of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, on the western edge of the most common arrival and departure corridor. It's totally normal to see planes in the sky. So, a day or two later when I heard a plane overhead, it was so weird to first not pay attention because planes are normal, and then remember that there were no planes flying ... but then, I remembered that it had been arranged for relief flights to leave from DFW that day. I decided to assume that that was the plane I'd heard, because any other alternative was too terrible to contemplate. It was February 2002 before I stopped watching every plane, wondering if it was where it was supposed to be in the sky ... in that period between September and February, I started noticing planes on approach paths that seemed unusual. I would scrutinize each one, wondering if I was about to see some horror. I suppose this sounds selfish, or self-absorbed, or something, but the hardest emotion for me to overcome has been guilt. I lost no people. I lost no property. No one I know directly lost either people or property. Even, I was able to learn the news and spend the day with friends, surrounded by sources of support. I felt so devastated, I felt such sorrow, I felt such fear. Yet, I felt unworthy to feel those things, because I'd been so personally untouched, learning about everything from the safe distance of some 1000+ miles. I really feel that the US has changed, that people in the US have changed. There is a soberness underlying life that wasn't there before. Yet, at the same time, I feel like the US has finally begun to join the world -- a world where it's much more common to live in uncertainty than not, where political violence is known well, where comfort is treasured rather than viewed as a right. Will the world hate us less now that we've experienced this event? 10 months later, and I'm still in the process of understanding what it is to have experienced a life-changing, culture-changing, event. And I only saw the pictures ... I cannot imagine what it must be like for those who witnessed the event with their own eyes, ears, with their own senses. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: When I first heard the news, I was actually just waking up trying to get ready for class. Of course I still in that state of what did I just hear? So, from what I heard of the first 5 minutes of conscienceness were a plane hit the Empire State Building. Ok, whoopie doo!! Then after I actually came to, turned the T.V. on I saw President Bush being interrupted while giving a speech to I think was eduation for young children. As soon as he was told of the news the Today show cut in and was showing footage of the plane crash into the World Trade Center. Of course I ended up going to my first class that day because at the time I only knew of one plane hitting the building. When I returned home for lunch, I found my roommate watching the news and that's when I heard the rest of the news about all four planes that were taken over. I didn't go to the rest of my classes that day. I really didn't want to go to work that evening either, but I did. I remember hearing stories of threats of gas prices possibly soaring like they did last summer. I personally don't know anyone in New York City, but my thoughts and prayers went out to them. However, none of the events actually hit me at heart until random pictures were shown of different views. I guess unless you have ties to New York City in some way or another, many people tend to react totally opposite of what they normally would. It's also at times like these when others begin to point the blame to perfectly innocent victims say from other countries, when those victims fled for their own freedom. That was the only other part I couldn't stand about the whole issue. Everyone began to blame all foreigners for a problem created by another individual. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11,2001 I was working and was headed to our usual place, a local grocery store for our 9:00 break. We usually grabbed a little something to eat and would take a 15 min break! Well after making my food selection i reached the cashier to check out. She had told one of my co-workers that they had just heard about an airplane hitting one of the twin towers in NY! Being a college student and just taking a current events class a couple of quarters before had only remembered a few things about those towers. They were one of the highest or tallest buildings in the US and that back around 1996 they had been bombed! That was all that i could remember about them. I also figured oh probably a tired pilot or something had probably caused this and was an accident. We were then in touch with our supervisor who instructed us to come back to the main building.This was mainly for security reasons. I never had been that close to excitement involving the world and being a government work place everything had to be carefully considered! No packages to be accepted or shipped out was the main one and the local police dept was guarding all city government buildings! Then we watched the repeat of the 1st tower being hit and then out of nowhere the 2nd tower was struck. Up until this day i was never so on alert and have never watched a huge historic event unravel as I was watching. My mom had always told me where she was when President Kennedy had been shot and every time I rolled my eyes and listenend to how much of a gentleman he was ,now i could relate to her reciting this historic event over and over, i too would be doing this with that day's events! I will now pass on to my children and grandchildren the September 11, 2001 story of how these terrorists had taken on our country, and how we all would pull together in a million different ways to get through this time and be stronger people! As the days and months rolled by and thousands of stories rolled in our personal lives and thru television and radio, we all stood strong and began to fight and undergo this transformation! To all the wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, grandchildren, grandparents, co-workers, friends, loved ones, my heart goes out to you on this day of rememberance! As I blare one of the great songs "God Bless the USA" on my car stereo,as I return to my job after witnessing a small hometown rememberance program in the center of our town. I think of all of you and pause for a moment as the chorus is being played, and i think of how I can remember you and your families. I feel selfish on how I can go home tonite and hold the ones I love and I can talk on the phone,right now if i wanted to to them. Then i think of all of you who have lost someone in these events and are trying to remember all of the good times and the last goodbyes you said before this all happened! I want to wish you all happiness and love as you pull stronger and get through this time in your lives and may the spirit of your loved ones that were taken from you help you hold your head up high and smile! May these events help us all realize to show love and compassion to everyone in the world! Let's not take one single moment of time for granted...Let's help each other out! Sometimes the simplest things can say ALOT! We are sometimes in such a hurry that we don't let that person at the 4 way stop go thru the intersection 1st we feel that they will get ahead of us, or the person crossing the street we don't help cross.
