I decided to sleep a little later than usual. I remember hearing my mother in the living room, as she kept saying something like "Oh no, oh no." I didn't get up at first, but eventually I got up to see what had happened. The first plane had hit the Twin Towers, and my mother was watching the coverage on television. We were watching together as the second plane hit, removing any doubt that it was an accident (as the networks were still speculating after the first plane hit). My mother and I are friends, and can talk for hours, but that morning, I don't remember having much to say as the reality sank in of what had just happened. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001 I was at the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. My mother had open heart surgery on the 7 of September and was still in the ICU department on the 11. I had been spending every night at the hospital with her because she was not doing too well. I remember waking up that morning in the waiting room to a bunch of people crowding around the only tv they had in that waiting room. Looks of complete shock were on their faces as the events unfolded in front of our eyes. My mom was recovering from the open heart surgery and had just suffered a stroke on the 10. They had the tv on in her room while all this was going on and she couldn't make sense of it all. In fact she said that while the news about this horrible event was on, she dreamed that she was there with them and that she was one of the survivors. That was a day that I will never forget, one because of what my mother was enduring and what the families of the loved ones who perished were enduring. May God bless all who lived through this and also the families of the ones who didn't. It is hard to think that at the same time that people we're plummeting to their innocent deaths, I was sitting in my class learning a trade and didn't even know that they we're screaming for someone to help them but I couldn't hear them. I was very sad for the people and stayed somewhat quiet through the day because i was sad and partially scared for my well being. There is a time in your life when you put away your own selfish pride and you sit down and just cry for all of the people that were never allowed to come home to their daughter or son or loved one. Just think about that husband and little child at home waiting for mommy to get off of work but mommy never came home. Imagine the pain that there was and how hard it was to explain that mommy was never going to come home and that she was going to a better place... All of this just because there was someone that had a grudge against someone else and many people died just for that one reason........ But the thing that stands out the most is the weather in New York that day. It was a picture perfect day. I arrived at work about 8:35 a.m. (Everyone else comes in about 9) got my desk set up, turned on the computer and as every morning read Newsday online. The headlines first read "small plane crashes into Trade Center" I did'nt really think too much of it at that moment I was thinking single engine plane maybe a 2 seater. But as my co-workers were coming in the story was starting to change. One girl was on the phone with her husband as he watched live on TV the second plane hit. We were all getting nervous. I personally was worried about my step niece and her two small girls who lived in the buildig next to the towers and her husband who worked on the 50th floor of tower 1. Another girl's mother worked in one of the buildings behind the towers. She was desperatly trying to reach her but we could not get a dial tone on our phones. Then someone from another office popped their head into our office and told us the Pentagon had been hit. I started to tremble and needed to be home with my husband and children. I felt so vulnerable and I think we were all wondering what else was going to happen. So we all decided to leave. While I was driving home I was listening to WABC AM. There werent many cars on the road it was almost like the calm before the storm, and just as I was passing the mall they made an anouncement that tower 2 just fell. I was looking at passing motorist and they were looking back at me with the same look of disbeleif and tears streaming down our faces. I almost wanted to reach out to them, but kept driving. I met my mother & husband at home and we took the kids to my brothers. There we sat and waited to hear from my sister in laws daughter. My sister in law was hysterical until the call came in at 1:00 pm. My step niece was ok. We had her on speaker phone as she relayed the events she went through. Nobody said a word, we just sat there and listend to her tell us how she heard the first plane hit, and how thank god she was running late getting the kids off to school that day, and how her husband just happened to be in Atlantic City. And then how she described seeing people jumping to their death, even a whole group holding hands and jumping together. As she described every gory detail, because she was still in a state of shock, we all sat there and cried as her voice rang out through the room over the speaker phone. She described in detail how she and her 2 young girls had to run for their lives and thank god they were picked up by a man in a pickup truck (bless him) After that we headed home. As we pulled into the driveway about 3:00 we could see F14's flying right over our house. What a strange feeling. My 10 year old ran into the house. When I came in I found her in her Pajamas in bed under the covers. That said so much to me. She just wanted to go to bed and wake up and let September 11, 2001 be over. If only it were that simple. I was watching tv when I thought I heard a small boom, I thought it was my ear because I had an ear infection. After I heard that I felt I needed fresh air. I went on the roof and looked in the direction of the towers and saw a horrible sight. I saw smoke billowing out of the north tower I couldnt believe. I sat ther watching a few minutes later out of the corner of my eye I saw the second plane. I watched it hit the south tower. I was blown away by what I saw. Tell us your story: My morning routine consisted of getting my two children off to school ... at 8:46 AM on September 11, 2001, I stood in the kitchen of my Del Ray home making lunches and watching Good Morning America just as I had done the day before. A Special Report interrupted, and reported an airplane had crashed into the World Trade Center, at this time, no one suspected this to be an act of terrorism. I watched as much as I could, before having to leave for work. Once in the car, I turned the radio on to see if there were any updates and listened as I drove the short distance to my office in Old Town. When I arrived, few of my co-workers were aware of what had happened in New York. I turned on my radio; and it was then we realized the seriousness of what that day would hold. A second plane had now struck the other tower of the World Trade Center in New York. It was obvious this was no accident. Next, closer to home, a plane was reported to have crashed into the Pentagon which is a short distance from Old Town. No one knew what to expect next, it seemed the world around us was out of control. My thoughts immediately turned to my family. My children, my husband and my parents ? where were they at this moment and were they safe? Were they scared? We could hear the jets flying overhead and the sound of sirens. It was then reported that another plane had crashed in a field in Pennsylvania ? it was believed this plane was bound for Washington DC. Our office crowded around a small television that we set up to monitor what was happening. We shuffled between the TV reports and our desks trying to telephone family members. Parents were calling their children?s schools. The phone lines were so overloaded; many calls could not go through. Cell phone signals were also down. We felt so helpless. One by one we broke ourselves away from the news reports and decided to venture out and attempt to make it home. Parents with children headed to schools to pick up their kids ? everyone wanted to be with and know their loved ones were safe. I was one of those parents that immediately went to pick up my children ? only to try and explain how all of this could have happened. I can only hope I never again have to see that fear in my children?s eyes. Soon after, A State Of Emergency was declared in our area and it was mandatory that everyone be off the roads and in their homes. I never imagined Old Town Alexandria could be so desolate, and an even stranger sight was that of military vehicles patrolling our streets and fighter jets overhead. Once home, I stayed in front of the television watching the continuous news coverage and could not believe my eyes as the Pentagon burned and the Twin Towers crumbled to the ground. How could this be happening? All of the poor innocent people .. The Men, the Women and the Children. Their families. What they must be feeling. Their grief, Their Anger and Their Pain. I cried for the wives whose husbands would not be coming home, and for the husbands who would not again see their wives. I cried for the parents who lost their children, and made sure I hugged my own children twice as long at bedtime that night, and thanked God I had the chance to do so. I am ashamed to admit that it took the events of September 11, 2001, for me to purchase an American Flag to display on my home, however, it has been flying there for one year, and shall continue in the years to come. This flag is very special to me. It will always be a symbol of Freedom; however, today, September 11, 2002 ? it also represents Life, Faith, Healing and Pride. God Bless America. I was working the graveyard shift of 12 midnight till 7 am, It was ahout 5:30 AM pst and we had the radio on in the office but barely adudible. I thought i overheard the DJ say something about a plane hitting the World Trade Center in NYC. I turned up the volume and the Newa was repeated. Suddenly, I began to panic. I am a Native New Yorker and my sister ( last i heard) worked in the Verizon building behind the twin towers,I rushed home and awoke my sleeping family and we turned on the TV, the TOday show. We couldn't believe what we saw and immediately I tried to call back East and find out about the whereabouts of my Sister and her Fiance. It was very strange because she was suppose to be in class. When she walked in the room i asked her what she was doing and she said that we were getting attacked so her teacher decided to cancel class. My neighbor asked me, "Clay, have you been wacthing t.v. this mornning?" I said, "No." She said in all seriousness, "What have you been doing, Sleeping?" I said, "I have been up for about an hour and a half." She said, "they're bombing the World Trade Center. Go watch the t.v." So I went into her living room and saw the live news report, and was taken aback at the chaos, terror, and mayhem that I was watching. I asked my neighbor, with just an ounce of humorist hope, was this for real? She said, "Yes, it is." I stood there mortified and in a state of disbelief. I lefted her house, and at full speed, ran to my car in which my wife was waiting. I told her and she was shocked. I turned on the radio to hear what was happening. If this can be believed, on the F.M. dail it was entertainment as ususal. The stations were playing music and doing their morning commuter jokes. Not a word of the events occuring in the east of the United States! This was a about 2-3 hours after the planes had hit. I found the Public Radio station and they were broadcasting the events. We rode in silence to my wife's rideshare's house. After I dropped her off I made my way down the highway to my school. Without her feminne presence in the car, I allowed the mantel of my manhood to fall, and the tough interior of the former U.S. Marine to stand at ease, and allowed the tears to fall. I cried for all the lives lost. I cried for the uncertainty of security in which my country grapsed its freedom from. I cried because I could not get my hands to the necks of those whose caused such insecurity to be felt in the hearts of the Amercan people. I then prayed for my country, the President, the Country Leaders, for the families and all those that would greive such a great loss. In class all I could think of was the safety of my family. I left class and called my son and told him to lock the doors and not to answer the door for anybody but a family member. I left school and gathered the other kids from their babysitter and daycare. I then went home and awaited my wife's arrival so that we could all be safe in our home under the protection of Jesus Christ. We sat in our living room watching the repeats of the planes going into the buildings, and listening to the reports. Sitting there in our home, and for the next several days, was like being in the midst of a 24 hours funeral. The pall would not lift. Even the emotions of death of a love one visited us: Anger, guilt, unbelief, denial, grief. They returned once again yesterday, 9/11/2002 watching the programs on t.v. However, this time we know that America will come through this as a better nation. More caring towards others. More unified. Humble. Stronger. And above all, victorious. I was working in the kitchen, doing kitchen patrol. I was serving meals to my fellow soldiers. One of our Drill Sergants came in and told us that the World Trade Center had been bombed. We were hysterical, being in Boot Camp, we saw a huge threat of going to war. Later that day, out Company Commander gave us a briefing on what had all happened. My frantic daughter's voice on the other end of the phone sent a chill through my body. Rushing to the television, I was trying to get her to tell me what was going on. I thought one of our family members was seriously hurt and they had the accident on the news. My 19 year old son was getting ready to head out the door for college when I called him back inside. We were hearing the voice of Katie Curig just as the second plane came into view and flew into the second tower. A nauseating feeling came over both my son and myself and we both immediately began to pray fervently out loud for God to deliver people from this attack. My daughter said she would begin praying immediately, and my son and I both knelt right in front of the T.V. screen, placed our hands on the chaotic scene in front of us and began to plead for the lives of these people to be spared. We prayed for the law enforcement officials and the fire fighters to have courage in the face of fear, order where there may have been chaos and the ability to see and hear those who would need their help. We prayed the rest of the morning off and on as the rest of the story began to unfold across the country. That was all we could do, and we still pray this day when we feel compelled. God help us. Tell us your story: I had just graduated from culinary school on aug 21st, and was refered by a teacher to Pastry Chef Heather Ho,at windows on the world. I worked there for 5 days, and on sept 11 was supposed to be in at 2pm for evening service. She gave me an opportunity when i had no experience professionally. She along with many of my new co-workers were killed. My whole family and al friends thought i was there, my cousin was the only one who could get through....from a cell phone in spain, woke my sister up saw what happened and ran to my room. I sat bolt upright when she slammed my door open, she said thank God you are home, by the time i was at the bottom of the stairs the second plane hit. i remember every second from that point on so clearly, trying to get in touch and let them(anyone,everyone)that i was ok,if they were ok. after the pentagon was hit, i got a cab went to my sisters high school to get her. they werent letting students go, i went a little nuts and demanded to see her....once they knew who i was related to i had such a jolt to reality,the principal as well as many people in the main office hugged me and were so happy i was alive(my sister hearing the news on the loudspeaker was in the counselors office along with dozens of other children and teachers believing their loved ones gone) one woman told me that i gave her hope that her husband was alright. they brought my sister out to me and, i dont know she was broken and then back together. I never wanted to let go,but we needed to get home(the cab driver waited outside her high school for 45 mins. i only had 10 dollars and he knew that.....he didnt take the money)once i got home within a few mins my mom got there,she worked in the local junior high as a school aid. after calming down she asked me if she could go back to the school.....there were .....so many chldren who had possibly lost parents. This is why I Love my mother so dearly, i offered to go too,but she said stay and try to get in contact with others. my father walked home from midtown manhattan where he worked. my boyfriend of 4 years worked in long island and came to my house at 11:30 that night because my sister Gaby threatened him if he didn't(he left me shortly after 9/11) with my family with me i couldnt sleep for 2 days,i felt could have should have been there, why did i get the night shift why was i ok? sometimes i still feel that. so on the 3 day i decided to volunteer,started to leave m hose when they announced on tv grand central was being evacuated. i stayed home,scared. then i realized that helping others was the only way i could repay the fact that i was still here. Got in touch with those working for windows' at Beacon restaurant, went there....cooked for 1 day and spent the next month and a half answering phones....for families waiting for any news. we had none.....i talked to people for very long periods of time,passing the phone to other volunteers when we couldnt talk anymore. I was with volunteers with the biggest hearts. each night i wandered around the city to vigils passing missing posters. New York City was sad, but beautiful too. the vibe of this town was complete brotherhood. we banded together cried together, sat in parks mourning crying on the shoulders of strangers. in november, i recieved a call from the chef i worked with that 1 day at the begining of my volunteer service, he offered me a job at his restaurant. i tok it and worked there for 3 and a half years. Tell us your story: When I first heard that a plane hit one of the towers of the World Trade Center it didn't really register then the tragedy that was taking place. I thought that a plane crashed into the top of the building accidentally, a plane crash (in some ways a common occurence). Before I left the house I heard that another plane struck the other tower and then I began to pay attention. On Good Morning America, they were saying that it appeared to be a terrorist attack. That blew my mind, but still I continued on to work, thinking that the media sometimes blows things out of porportion. When I arrived at work it was the talk of the office, but we all continued on with our day. Soon after, we heard about the Pentegon, the crash in Pennsylvania, and the collapsing of the twin towers. It was a terrorist attack on Americans. I was devestated at all of lives that I knew without a shadow of a doubt were lost. I began to pray at my desk, to keep His hands on the situation. To comfort and bless the families in this horrible time. I know what it feels like to lose someone to a tragedy, and at first nothing can comfort you. I also know that GOD is all powerful and that He allows things to happen for whatever reason. Sept. 11 was a day of great sorrow and it will never be forgotten, God was there that morning and He will be with us until he says its the end. It's hard to hear and even harder to believe, but the people that we lost on that day are a lot better off than we are today, one year later. They've made it to where we have to go, and this journey from here on out will be difficult. It will get worse before it gets better. Dealing with the pain and lose will always be hard, but with His help there is nothing that we can't overcome and survive. So when it seems like no one cares or there is no reason to go on, just remember with GOD ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE. And in order to see our loved ones who have gone on before us, we must live to reach the same point that they reached a year ago. I had 45 min to be to school. I jumped in the shower, quickly got dressed and threw my make-up on. My mother drove me to school cause i hated riding the bus. When i arrived at school, i did the normal thing and went to talk to my friends, until the bell rang. I was in my Social Studies class when the Principal came on the speaker and said that one of the towers were hit in New York. The teacher turned on the news, and we sat there and watched. As we were watching t.v, we saw another plane hit another tower. Everyone couldn't believe what happened. A little bit later, we heard about the Pentagon , and another plane that crashed in Pennsylvania. Watching people jump from the building. It was very upsetting, and not knowing what to really think right away. I was in 8th grade and now i am a senior. But it seems just like yeaterday that it happened. When i first witnessed what happened on September 11th, i had just got out of school. I walked to my after school babysitting job. As usaul, the girl i watched wouldnt be there for an hour. I flipped on the television and saw a building on fire. I thought nothing of it, but when i changed the channel again it was still on. For the first time i decided to watch the news. When i heard what had happened , i only felt a little scared. I knew it was bad bye the tone in the reporters voice. Just then , the 6 year old i babay sat for walked in. She asked me what had happenend,and i tried my best to explain it in a way she could understand. Then she said "is it going to happen again" and it made me actually think. What if it did happen again somewhere where i had family or somewhere closer to me like in boston. Has your life changed since september 11th? The most important thing i learned about septemeber 11th was to appreciate things. Like family, if they are there today, who knows if the will be there tommorow? Also appreciate everyday. Live it like your last, because you dont know it might be. Lastly appreciate the fact you are alive today after september 11th, there are people out there who now longer have a father or a mother or a grandparent. Who are just under the age of 8. What do you think should be remembered about september 11th? What i think should be remembered about september 11th are a few things. Number how are nation didnt fall apart, but got closer together. We didnt react in complete panic but instead we all united to help one another. Another thing is volunteers from every where were helping one another like complete strangers. They risked there lives to help one another. Lastly what i think should be rememebred is the firefighters and policemen who also risked there lives to save other people. Many of them died bye just going in the building to find survivors, and helping people. And what i think is most important is to remember all that died, and there families who now wake up in the morning and think they arent there anymore and wont be again. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The morning of September 11, 2001 I was with my little girl watching cartoons. She was almost one at the time so she didn't like watching the news that much! I got a call from a woman at my church telling me about the first planing hitting the WTC and I immediately turned on the news. I was glued to the TV most of the day. My husband was at work and I was calling him periodically with updates. Both of my brothers and my sister-in-law work in DC so I wasn't able to relax until I heard from them and knew they were okay. I must have talked to my mother and best friend at least a dozen times each. It was very odd for me to watch all of the death and devastation because I was 3 months pregnant at the time. I kept thinking about the life growing inside me and the hope that it represented. I thought about the many women who were pregnant whose husbands would never see their babies born...and about the children who would never know their fathers...and about everyone else who experienced a loss that cruel day. My heart was broken. I still think about all of those people each day. My heart was filled with pride for our country and I desired so much to do something to help. But what could I do? I thought and prayed and then I realized that I could have an impact on the lives around me. I can raise my kids to respect the differences in people and not to hate. I can reach out to people who are hurting and I can be proud to be an American. Today is September 11, 2002. This morning I sat on the floor playing with BOTH of my daughters and as my mind went back to one year ago I realized that as Americans, we are stronger when faced with adversity, we are united against a common foe and we are blessed beyond compare.
