Tell us your story: I saw many things on September 11th but the one image that sticks in my mind is that of a low flying plane as it passed over me just a minute before it crashed into the World Trade Center. I wrote the following journal entry two days after the attacks: Tuesday, September 11, 2001 A day that ended as anything other than ordinary began with my morning routine. My hours had just changed from the summer so I had the luxury of sleeping a little later. I normally woke up at 6am but this morning I didn?t get out of bed until 6:30. I took a shower and got dressed with time to spare. I took the few moments before I had to leave for the bus to climb back into bed to snuggle with my fianc? and to tell him that I love him. I never leave without saying goodbye and saying I love you. I had no idea that those few moments were going to be the one thing that would get me through the next 36hours. Just before I left for work I decided to wear sandals rather than heels. I was supposed to attend a wine and cheese reception Tuesday night and thought heels would be more appropriate but didn?t think my feet could withstand wearing heels all day. Later, when I was fleeing my office, I was thankful for those sandals. I boarded the 7:30 bus and settled in for the hour ride into Manhattan. I only live about fifteen miles out of the city but with traffic it takes that long to get through New Jersey and the Lincoln Tunnel. I hadn?t been sleeping well so I feel asleep on the bus. Looking back I wish I?d been awake. I often would stare in awe at the NYC skyline basked in the morning light. That would have been the last time I could have seen the Twin Towers. My bus arrived at Port Authority at 8:30am. Not one for subways and trying to squeeze as much pre-wedding exercise in I set out to walk across town ? from 8th avenue and 41st street to 2nd avenue and 41st street. It usually takes me about half an hour to walk across town. I can make it in twenty if I sprint but I was not in a hurry. I had to be a work at 9am so I had enough time. It was cold, a sign that autumn was on the way. The chill was very appropriate for what was to come. I walked along 41st street until I reached Byrant Park at 6th avenue. I may have been able to see the Twin Towers down 6th avenue if I had thought to look. But it was just a staple of the skyline that I guess I took the sight for granted. You never think that something that big and solid could crumble in such a short time. Fashion Week had just begun and normally the park is roped off but I was able to squeeze through. I walked through the park, a sense of peace ? the last I would feel of the day ? washing over me. On the other side of the park I passed by the library and turned down 5th avenue to pick up 41st street again. Since Bryant Park is the halfway point between the Port Authority bus terminal and my office it had to have been around 8:45am. As I was walking down 5th avenue I heard a plane overhead. I looked up and was surprised to see it flying so low. It looked as if it were barely clearing the buildings. I remember thinking it was dangerously low. I wondered where it was heading. At best it was flying to Newark because it was flying away from Lagaurdia and not headed toward JFK. It occurred to me that it may crash but never did I imagine it would crash into a building. I thought it may crash into the harbor but hoped it would make it to Newark. I was reminded of the recent plane crash that killed Aaliyah. But I really didn?t think it would crash because it showed no sign of distress. It was just inconceivable to me that it could crash. The image of that passenger plane, the image of its off-white belly, will forever be etched in my mind. Once the plane was out of my view I thought nothing more of it until I reached 2nd avenue. As I stood on the corner waiting to cross and enter my office building, two fire engines came roaring down 2nd avenue with a news 4 van trailing right behind. I remember wondering what had happened that was so newsworthy. Emergency vehicles are an every day sight in New York City but rarely do you see a news van following so closely behind. And it was from channel 4. I don?t know where their office is but across from mine is channel 11. I stood there on the corner, wondering, when a man walked by me and announced that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Towers. I instantly thought back to the plane I saw and knew that it had to have been the same one. Oh, what a horrific tragedy but only a terrible, terrible accident. I was dumbfounded and crossed the street in a daze. I entered the building and encountered one of my coworkers in the elevator. We exclaimed our shock at the tragedy. On the sixth floor, our receptionist was rapidly fielding calls and trying to keep us updated with reports from the radio. It was 9am when I got to my office. I settled in, shaking from the shock. I logged on to my computer. I went into my friend Allison?s office, who fortunately was in Colorado on vacation, and borrowed her radio. I had to know what was going on. I called my parents in Maryland. My mother worries about everything. I didn?t want her to worry about me. Nothing had happened to me. It wasn?t even all that close by. It just had happened in the same city. My voice shook as I left a message. I told them not to worry. That I was fine. That was before all hell broke loose. I walked through the lobby and the receptionist kept saying that there were reports of a second plane. I thought she was making it up or that the radio announcer was wrong. How could there be two planes? It was an accident. And if there was another plane it had to have been a news helicopter that accidently crashed while trying to cover the plane crash. I just could not comprehend a second plane. I sat in my office, still shaking, wondering how I was going to get any work done. Would anyone understand how upset I was by this? I listened to people who called into the radio and suddenly the reports were that this was a terrorists attack and not an accident. How could that be? Weren?t they jumping to conclusions? I sought out my friends and for a moment was terrified that one of my friends, Cris, who happens to be five months pregnant, was in danger of losing her husband. Her husband had just started working at a bank downtown but by the grace of God he was in midtown, safely away, at a conference. After assessing that my friends were present and accounted for, I found my way into the conference room where we had managed to get the one channel that was working, channel two, on the TV. Apparently when the tower was hit a lot of connections were knocked out, including phones. It was the highest point in the city. In the conference room I sat with my coworkers and watched as the events unfolded. The severity of the events quickly became clear. I watched as the tower that was hit second crumbled to the ground in a huge cloud of smoke. I watched as they announced the pentagon had been attacked. That was when the fear bubbled up inside me. Suddenly I realized we were under attack. We were at war with an unknown enemy and who knew where he could strike next. I was so afraid. I was in fear of my life. I imagined never seeing Steve or my family and friends again. I did not want to die. I did not want this to be the last day of my life. I thought back to the few moments before I left for work that I was snuggling with Steve and feared that would be the last time I would see him. I knew he was ok because he works in New Jersey and was safely away from all this insanity. But I couldn?t get ahold of him. I couldn?t get anyone on the phone. Email was all I had. I heard from two of my good friends but everything unfolded so fast and the fear and terror of the reality of the situation became apparent quickly. Back in the conference room my friend Alitza held my hand that would not stop shaking. My one-time boss grasped my shoulders as the tears poured down my face. I was so afraid. I have never been that scared in my life. The U.N. is around the corner from my office and the Israeli consulate is across the street. Grand central is two blocks down and the empire state building is less than ten blocks away. What if we were the next target? I had to get out of there but where was I going to go? They quickly closed off all ways in and out of the city. I was trapped. My pregnant friend?s husband made his way to our office and convinced us to leave. I left with them because we all live in New Jersey so we were all headed for the same place. I hugged my other friends goodbye and prayed that I would see them again. We were going to take our chances on the streets. We didn?t know the extent of what was happening so we were not going to be sitting ducks in a possible target. We walked 40 blocks north to 82nd street to the apartment of a friend of Sean?s. I got there by sheer adrenaline. We left the office at 11am and it took us just over an hour to make our way uptown through the throngs of people trying to escape the city, trying to escape the billowing cloud of smoke pouring up from the southern tip of Manhattan. Every time we heard a plane fly overhead we searched the clear blue sky for any sight of it, wondering where it was going to hit, not knowing that it was probably just a fighter jet protecting the air space. There were lines at all the grocery stores and banks. We stopped at an ATM and took out lots of cash. We didn?t know what the future held in store for us. Once we got to John?s apartment and sat down, I started to feel better. I was still shaking terribly. I could barely stand. I just stared blankly at the TV in complete shock and disbelief. I think at this point I realized the attacks were over and it was more about getting home then staying alive. But the fear was still there. I no longer felt safe anywhere. They had attacked the city I worked in, the city I was thinking about working in and near where my parents and some of Steve?s family live. I felt completely violated and vulnerable. But I was not angry yet. Anger is not an emotion I am feeling yet. I am barely feeling anything. I am numb. Around 3pm they opened the ferries. It was the only way to get into New Jersey. John drove us over to 12th avenue and 42nd street to catch the ferry around 5pm. The line was about 10 people across and ten blocks long. It was impossible and overwhelming. Since Cris is pregnant we were able to cut in line and board the ferry immediately. On the way across the Hudson River the number 7 building collapsed. Everyone rushed to the one side to see it and we almost tipped over. Once safely in New Jersey I had the option of waiting in a long line to take a bus one mile down the road to Hoboken and take my chances there or stay with Cris and Sean. I chose the later. I had not been able to get ahold of Steve all day so I didn?t know how I was going to get home if I couldn?t get a bus straight there. Many of the main roads were closed. I couldn?t get home and Steve couldn?t get to me. Staying with Cris and Sean was the best option. And at this point I had a splitting headache. I was exhausted. I hadn?t really eaten all day. My feet hurt. My back hurt from carrying my bag. But except for my headache I didn?t really mind b/c I was alive and grateful for that. I just wanted to get home and see Steve and talk to my parents. We made it the couple of miles to their apartment by 7pm. I think. The day was so long. It felt like it would never end. And much of it is a big blur. We ate dinner. Washed up. I took advil but my headache never really went away. I had a beer and that took the edge off. Around 9pm I got the bright idea to check my voicemail to see if Steve had left a message. He had so I knew he was ok. There were 16 messages on our voicemail, all from friends and family wondering how we were. Cris and Sean?s phone had gone out before the tragedy begun so they didn?t have a land line. All they had was a cell phone and that only worked when it was plugged in and then only barely. Around 10pm I called my parents. It was very emotional and I think my mom didn?t want to hang up. And she was upset that I wasn?t at home. But what could I do? I was safe and that is all that mattered. All day I kept thinking I just want to go home and go to bed. I finally got to go to sleep at midnight, right after I finally talked to Steve. I pretty much passed out from exhaustion. I couldn?t imagine sleeping but I did and I had weird dreams, all related to the events. I can?t quite distinguish from dream and what is reality. It just isn?t real. I cannot believe this happened. I finally got home Wednesday afternoon. At the end of October I moved back to my hometown in Maryland. Steve and I had made the decision to move in August. After September 11th, I didn't want to leave New York but we had to get on with our lives and that meant moving. Exactly eight months after the attacks we got married. We still live in Maryland but I try to visit New York whenever I can. A group of salesmen and myself were planning to go to a packaging show at the Jacob Javits Center in New York and were coordinating our schedules to meet and attend this show. Then one of the salesmen called and said that a plane had crashed into the towers and he wasn't sure if he was going. Of course after that the bridges and roads closed and no one got in or out of the city so the trip was cancelled. For the rest of the week when we got home from work my husband and I could not break away from the news reports of the event. We sat on the couch every night and watched transfixed, unable to break away and continue with any semblance of a normal routine. Tell us your story: On the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, I woke up late for work so my normal daily routine of watching the TV while I get ready was interrupted. I hurriedly got up, jumped in the shower, and got ready for work. I was living in an apartment with a roommate with whom I also worked with and he was still asleep when I left the apartment at about 8:30 AM CST (9:30 AM in New York). Anyway, on my way to work, I turned on the radio looking for music like I normally do, but the first station I turned to sounded like it had news on it, so I kept cycling through my stored stations and they were all like that. I thought that seemed pretty weird so I started listening to what these people were saying and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. They replayed an earlier caller who had been on the phone with the radio station when the second plane hit the South Tower and to hear that caller express his shock and grief right as the moment was happening is something I will never forget. I got my cell phone and quickly called my mother who lives in Wichita Falls, Texas, and I asked her exactly what was going on and she told me about the two planes hitting the World Trade Center towers. I had absolutely nothing to say at that point because I was in so much shock. The United States had never been attacked like this before and I could not believe it was happening now. I thought for sure we were safe from all the holy wars and terrorist acts going on in the Middle East, but that day changed my thoughts forever. When I got to work at the auto insurance company where I worked, there were several people already gathered around a TV watching the news and everything in real time. You could tell that everybody was in a state of shock and that nothing we had been through in our own separate lives even came close to the horrendous atrocities that the victims in the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and all the airplanes had to go through, not to mention all of the victims' families. We must have stayed and watched TV for at least 2 hours before some people had to leave to go do their work just to focus on something else. I remember hearing all the rumors about possible car bombs at congressional offices and that Air Force One was flying around the nation with the President aboard because there had been threats made against it. Of course, most of the rumors turned out not to be true, but when someone tells you those types of rumors after you see the Twin Towers collapse, you believe that anything can and has happened. My roommate finally came into the office around 10:00 AM CST and he had heard nothing about the attacks. He sat down and watched the TV for about 5 minutes and went right to work, going about his daily routine. I remember thinking to myself how he could just go on like that when our nation was being attacked. It still troubles me to this day because it proves to me that their are people out there, our own fellow Americans, who don't care what happens to the nation and to the people of our nation, unless it directly affects them. Needless to say, I am no longer roommates with him anymore and I haven't talked to him in quite a long time. But, I think what surpised me the most about that day was that we still had customers calling in to our call center looking for auto insurance quotes. It still baffles me to this day how someone could see what happened on TV and then turn around and order auto insurance. I guess I feel that way because on that day, I felt personally attacked by the terrorists. They were messing with my country and they will learn that that is not something you do to the United States of America and get away with it. I ended up not doing much at work that day and I actually left about 45 minutes early so I could go home and sit on the couch and watch the coverage all night long. On that morning I was operating my train Downtown on my way to Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn. When my partner and I arrived to Brooklyn I was told by passsenger that 2 plains had crashed into the World Trade Center. That morning we left late from Flatbush we got rerouted from our normal route. Even though we took longer than what we normally do I new something was wrong. When the train pulled into Chamber Street at that moment when I opened the door I heard the dispatcher over the radio that Rector Street Station had collapsed. At that moment I seen a cloud of white smoke come into the station at tha moment I made an announcement to the passengers to get back on the train immediately for some reason everyone listen and got on the train and I closed the door and we left the station. One thing that I want to add to the story is that we were the lucky ones that day cause just like Rector St Station colapse It could had happended at Chambers were we was at for that moment. In fact, when a coworker told me a plane had hit one of the Trade Towers I thought it was a small plane, and that it was an accident. For a second I thought it was a sick joke being aired as a publicity stunt for a radio station, you know, like War of the Worlds. No one in management said anything. When I got to take a break a couple of hours later, I saw the tv coverage on CNN. I sat down, stunned. The news was saying that maybe 10,000 people were in the buildings. I felt so helpless. I'm trained in Red Cross Disaster Relief and I'm a first responder. I wanted to get to the city and do something, anything. In the end I had to go back to work and finish my shift til 6pm. I remember a young girl coming in with her mother - she was pale and quiet. She politely asked me if we had any American flags. I took her over to a 3 month old display that was still full of flags that had been reduced in price because they weren't selling. She picked one out and turned to go. That was the only item they had come for. Those flags sold out within the next two hours and we were out of stock for months after that - selling through each shipment of flags before they'd barely reached the sales floor. It was a horrible day, but one that made me think. What is the price of freedom? What is the value of humanity? What are Americans made of, and how can we share that with the world in a positive way? They had a schedule a way of life, a set routine they had fallen into. People don?t mean for this to happen it just does. We begin by waking in the morning to going off to school/work and then returning home. It?s a roll many have fallen into, and we all hope not to let this fate befall us but it?s hard, we are expected to take this path and follow in the footsteps of those before us. We all hope for a semblance of change, something to get us out of are usual tedium of life and make things all that more interesting. But what we received is not the type of change most wished to for. A day in history, which will not be forgotten, has been etched into the minds of this generation?s youth. An event, with such great ramifications, that will hang upon every Childs memory for many years to come. I speak of September 11th, 2001 when America was attacked by terrorists. A day in our lives when the world stood still and everyone held their breathe. Many remember what they were doing, where they were at, to what clothes they wore when they heard the tragic news. During this time of crisis not only was there tragedy but a rebirth in America. Patriotism rose among the masses, people stood by their fellow countrymen tall and proud, we reached our hearts and aid out to those in need, but in reality it was a day when America became alive. No one sat idle we all did what we could from donating blood, sending canned goods to victims, money to charities, and our prayers to the injured and dead. Its was a day of heroes, not only the firefighters and policemen who risked their lives to search the rubble of the wreckage, those who volunteered and did all they could, no it was a day of different type a hero. I speak of soldiers not those we usually come to think of, who fight in the front lines but those whom don?t receive praise, those who on that day lost their lives for their country, for those who serviced our country from behind enemy lines. Because on 9/11 we were no longer just considered inactive citizens in the world but active participants in the struggle for freedom and democracy that takes place everyday of the year. The attacks changed America forever but looking back it seems we have forgotten the sacrifices of those who have perished and struggled that day. We have once fallen into the tedium of which is ours lives. I am not saying go out and join the army and jump to the front lines hoping for action, far from it. But it seems most have put the incident behind as if it never happened. Like it was some insignificant occurrence to be discarded. This may not be true for all but it is for the majority. We have fallen back into our daily grind of life. I ask, where has our patriotism gone, the flags used to adorn every automobile, home, and piece of clothing. Now you are lucking to catch a glimpse of a small flag sticker on a bumper or a flag hanging from ones doorway. Where are our masses of volunteers, those who sacrificed so much to make things all that more bearable. Maybe our American rebirth was only a fleeting thing but lets hope it can revive once more without another disaster such as this being the cause behind the rebirth of the American Spirit. Tell us your story: On the day that the towers fell I was at a prenatal appointment and I was just about done when I called home for my husband to pick me up and That's when I found out that the towers fell. I was worried because my Grandfather and Father were in nyc while I was at the appointment . It took me 3 days to contact them and When I was finally able to I was so glad because they were alright. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had gotten off an overnight shift at American Medical Response where I am a 911 Dispatcher at 0630. My normal routine was to come home, change, and unwind so I could go to sleep. Just minutes before the North Tower was struck, I had sat on the bed to watch Good Morning America. The North Tower was struck, I sat in disbelief. Minutes later the second tower was struck; my heart sunk, I began to shake and cry. I phoned my kids and husband at work to tell them what had happened and continued to sit frozen watching the tragedy unfold. Knowing I wouldn't sleep that day, I quickly showered and went back to work to lend whatever help I could. I then worked my regular shift where I dispatched ambulances to the New Haven area and kept in touch with those we dispatched to New York. I am also an EMT-I for Stratford Volunteer Emergency Services. When I did my next shift, two days later, my partner and I realized we were being treated much differently. People were telling us to go ahead of them in line, we staring at us, were moving to let us pass. It was a very strange feeling and not one we were totally comfortable with. We, like all those who perished love what we do. We don't look to be treated differently than anyone else. This is what we chose to do. But to all those who do appreciate the dedication, sacrifice and love we give, we thank you. Tell us your story: I do marketing for an auto dealership in Southeastern, MA, and was going about my morning when suddenly one of my Service Advisors burst into the office shouting, "A plane just hit the World trade Center!" "Terrorism?" I asked, a chill going down my body... "No, can't be", he responded, "Probably just some inexperienced pilot". As we ran to our customer lounge, all doubt was removed as we watched the building burst into flames. I was sick with worry - I have friends and family in the area! As the day went on and tragedy unfolded, the entire office ground to a hault. Customers and employees alike hovered over my shoulder, as I was the only one in the office with an Internet connection. "CNN is down! MSNBC is down!" I told impatient onlookers. "Let me try projo.com" [Projo.com being the Providence journal website]. Projo.com was up, but the images were terrifying. I called my brother down in South Orange, NJ - an hour from the scene. He had only moved there two weeks before, from Boston. Was he okay? He was, but he informed me they were evacuating Boston, as a precautionary move. The day passed in a blur, and when I got home, I couldn't take it anymore. I turned on The Disney Channel, just to get away from those horrible images; to hope that it was only a dream. My Mom came home and yelled at me for watching Disney, as if I didn't care...but soon enough, she , too, had her fill of the rubble, fright, and anger that now filled her heart. A phone call came that night - my cousin, Michael, an E-4 in the US Navy was not coming home. His ship, the USS Phillipine, had turned its course back to the Persian Gulf. Our country had gone to war, and my 22 year old cousin - the baby of my family - was on the front lines, and almost on the front page of USA Today. Pictures of bombs being set off made cover pages, and just outside the frame was Michael, standing next to the sailor who was "pushing the button". Michael is safe at home now, and my lost loved ones are accounted for...I guess I was one of the lucky ones...yet, how does a nanny explain to her young charges what is happening? How does an auntie explain to her nephew and niece that we are at war against an unseen enemy? How do we go back to the innocence we lost? Not all deaths are physical...the toll was much higher that day than newsgroups reported. The death toll will never be totally accounted...for there are those that still live who have died inside. I remember walking down the hall at work and another teacher was coming towards me telling me a plane hit one of the towers. At first I thought it was a small plane or the wing of a plane had just tapped it. As I came closer to the science office, the department chair was telling teachers exactly what had happened. I had a prep period at that momment, so I walked along with a few teachers down to the security office were there was a t.v. As we entered the security office, the second tower was hit. At that moment, everything stopped for me. I could not believe my eyes. No one moved. A few minutes later the bell rung and I went to my next class. Appromixately fifteen minutes later, the principal came on over the loud speaker and told school what had happened. We then had a moment of silence in rememberance of the people who had lost their lives in this tragedy. I will never, ever forget. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My husband and I had just returned from Corona del Mar (San Diego) the day before and we took an additional day off from work. I got up early and turned on the television and couldn't believe what I was seeing. I saw a man in a business suit falling out of a large tower building. I initially thought this was a film technique and not real. As I continued to watch, I was overcome with utter disbelief and couldn't imagine what was happening was real. I sat transfixed to the television when the 2nd plane hit the towers and literally couldn't believe what was happening. My husband came wandering into the livingroom asking why I was up so early and after seeing my expression on my face, he turned his head to the television and stared transfixed to what was taking place. He questioned what happened and immediately the broadcaster started speaking about what was unfolding before our eyes. In my entire life, I never imagined being witness to such hatred and war although I read many stories in history books during my school years. We all assume that those days were in history and would never occur again. I cannot say how much impact seeing what was happening changed my way of thinking and how we live. I was gripped with sheer fear and didn't know what to do. Shortly thereafter, the entire sky in Southern California ceased with planes with the exception of a lone jet fighter passing overhead. People were transfixed and traffic on the streets was non-existent. Businesses closed and people were rushing home to their families. For the next several hours, everybody's life was changed and our normal day-to-day life seemed like a faint memory because all that was important was being with family and loved ones and comforting one another. September 11, 2001 changed my life, my way of thinking and my entire outlook of life. I cherished my family and friends and realized they were far more important than anything else. People seemed to feel the same and within a short time, American flags were being displayed proudly outside of homes, businesses, on cars, on clothing, everywhere you looked people became united. This day will forever be etched in my mind and one that completely taught me what was really important and life was a gift that should be cherished. I pray that those who bravely lost their lives that they didn't do so in vain, but will be remembered forever in history. I got up made my way to school and joined in on all of my classes I left my second period class to call my golf pro to schedule a lesson later on that day. He informed me that a plane had just hit the World Trade center. My first thought was that something malfuctioned with the plane and it accedtally hit the tower. I went back to class and was the first person to inform my class and teacher of what happened. We did not know too many details at the time, so we used all the resorces at our disposel to find out information. We later found that another plane had hit the second tower. We knew somethig terrible had happened, but it did not truly sink in untill we heard about the plane that crashed at the petagon. Many of our parrents work in and around this very important buliding, in cluding my father. A small panic went arround our school as many students tried to contact their parrents, most were unsucsessful because of the multitude of calls being sent. I did not get a hold of my father untill I got home 6 hours later. I found that he was on his way to the White House, the suspected original destination of the plane. I was lucky that I personaly did not know any one who was hurt in the attacks of September 11, 2001. I send my best wishes to all of those people who were personaly affected by the attacks. My daughter had just started kindergarden the week before. My son Joshua was two. My children were too young to understand what had happened, and I did not know how to explain it. when you have two young children their mentallity of the world is inoscent. I hated to burst their bubble. When I was a young girl I always thought of the world as good, and safe. It is hard to believe that you have to raise children these days, preparing them to be very cautious. I feel very sad that their are evil people in this world, that could do such a terrible thing. We were testing, and after you were done you could leave the room and go to the front office where there was a television. Suddenly someone came into the class and announced the WTC had been attacked. We all ran to the tv room. I couldn't belive it, it just couldn't be true, this sort of thing happens in other countries, not here in the United States. I immediately thought of family that lives in DC and NY. We went out side and I vividly remember that the day was absolutely beautiful, a perfect sunny September day. It just didn't seem real. Eveyone was on their cell phones try to call home. I finally got through and learned all my loved ones were ok. Our teacher would not let us leave, he announced that we have to stick to the state schedule. He futher stated he would not let any terrorist stop us from getting an education. At first I though that was cold and unfeeling of him, but upon reflection, I realized that was his way of keeping things as normal as possible for us. I can appreciate what he did. Tell us your story: I can't begin to explain the emotions I felt as I heard the reports of the tragedy that unfolded in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania on that devastating day. I listen to the radio as I work and could not believe that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I informed my co-workers what had happened and thought how bizarre for a passenger plane to crash into a building. When the second plane hit I knew this was not a mere coincidence, we were under attack. As the day evolved and so many more innocent lives were lost, the reality set in. I knew something had happened that would forever change the way we view our existence and our loved ones. The following writings are just a part of how I tried to focus my attention during that time. We hope and pray that in the future we can continue that idea, but the events of the past 2 days and the uncertainty of upcoming events have influenced our decision. The plans are still underway for the party and we will try to make it a fun event for all. It is scheduled for September 29th, 2:00-5:00pm, at the Ripley Volunteer Fire Department. I will keep you informed if any changes need to be made. I'm sure that everyone feels the hurt caused by the loss of life and disruption of families that has occurred. I'm sending the following prayer to all of you, because it has helped me through some difficult times. To be honest, all parts of it are hard to accept at the moment. This anger needs to be directed toward the perpetrators of these horrific and cowardly acts of extreme malice toward mankind. The whole world is involved in this terrible loss of life and liberty. We as a global community are challenged to overcome these dissidents of normal life. You can find evidence of non-humanistic practices anywhere in the world. Our mission as humanity should be to make it impossible for these malcontents to inflict harm upon their neighbors. All we can do as citizens is to put trustworthy persons in position to make decisions that will assure benefit to all people who live normal lives. Any acts of vigilante justice should be discouraged, based upon the history of these actions. To all the human service personnel involved in the rescue efforts in New York and Washington, DC, our thoughts and prayers are with you. To the families and friends of the casualties of these disasters we can only offer our deepest sympathy. We do as a nation, and as a civilization, promise to persevere in the investigation and punishment of those responsible for this outrage. My family roots extend to 1740, when my ancestors boarded the ship "Friendship" commanded by Captain William Vettery, from Rotterdam. Let us as a nation and as a citizen of the human race continue toward limiting future acts of destruction upon our citizens. We have taken a firm stance against the injustice dictated on the inhabitants of those less fortunate. To maintain and further the development of the peoples involved in the current conflict is an admirable objective. We cannot overlook the beliefs that people hold, in their pursuit of "The Almighty", the one true God that all profess to believe in. To all that truly believe in the one true God, be assured that his will be proved in the current conflict. One cannot profess to be a follower of God and take human rights and lives' in vain. In Afghanistan many rights have been taken from the citizens. The rights of all individuals have been pressed to the breaking point. There has been so much suppression of the human endeavor that outbreaks of individual expression should be expected. While this should be considered as a release of pent up frustrations, acts of brutality need to be halted. For too long people have professed to be followers of God's teachings and have failed to show that in action. The true love of God is within us all as we are all part of the family he created to carry out his will. How we carry out this charge is of our own free will and within his making. To hold the life he has granted to his children is the most important thing we can try to protect. ---------------------------------------------------------- What We Are Here For We are brought onto this earth for one purpose, to do the best we can in every task we undertake. That task sometimes is not clear to us as we go through our lives. We can only strive to serve others and to serve God in our actions. To think that simply because we are a member of the human race, and we are here, we are due our place is not correct. We have been given a great gift to exist and to make a difference in the future of humanity. If all of us stop and truly think of the blessings that God has given us, it is not that difficult to realize how lucky we truly are. To provide a means for the nonconformists of human endeavor to inflict harm upon mankind is reprehensible and cannot be allowed. Acts of "Terrorism" and suppression of human rights should not be tolerated in our society today. Fanaticism and driven righteous acts carried out in the name and supposed beliefs of God are not the answer to these problems. Too often the perpetrators of theses acts have no idea of what the true idea of belief in God is. So the bottom line is be aware of what you believe and accept what others believe, but do not allow either to inflict harm. May the good Lord bless and keep you safe to further his will on the Earth and it's people. Mike Spainhour --------------------------------------------------------- To All People That Share This World We Call Home We as the human race upon this Earth can no longer accept the extinction of life that a few accept as a continuance of their ideals. Every individual has it within them to make this a better place to live. Differences of opinions and beliefs' are not excuses to target the members of your family in a destructive manner. Any action taken against another based upon these differences alone is inhumane. All injustice toward people should draw attention from the members of our family. These injustices can not be allowed to continue on their own paths' of destruction. We as a family must protect all of our children and not accept the attempt to remove their childhood and development by placing them in harm, or by twisting their belief of their own existence. It has become necessary to take action against the inhumane treatment that mankind has inflicted upon each other, and many will die. All through our miniscule history on this planet we have exhibited the very essence of what has allowed us to survive this long. What we have to believe in is the future of our children and the safety of their children. Better times will come for them and we must try to protect that time. I attempt to write these ideas based upon the teaching of Abraham and his belief that all should be treated as family. His idea that violence toward a family member was a disgrace is now more than ever applicable. I am ashamed of the members of our family that draw their strength from the oppression and manipulation of others. The idea of violence toward others based upon religious belief is absurd and totally irrational. The practical teachings of our fathers do not bear witness toward justification of this action. It is time to wake up and see what is really needed in our world. The time has arrived to take positive action against the Jackals' that would claim the world as their own. Put aside your individual beliefs' and think of those that follow. Their poison can infect all that they contact and persuade others to the warped ideal of what they believe. Be alert and prepared for we know not the time or place, but we will meet our maker. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I went to bed on 9-10 thinking how cool it would be if my sister in law were to go into labour and have my niece. My brother's birthday is 9-11 and she and I share the same birthday and I thought it be cool if it happened. My great aunt came upstairs to wake me up on 9-11 and I was like awesome my niece was born, but instead I heard that the Pentagon and World Trade Center were bombed. I thought no big deal some damage and people are hurt. Then about 45 minutes later she came up and said to get out of bed that 3 planes had crashed. That made me run downstairs and she had heard from my mom saying that she was stranded in Colorado and that her and my dad were driving back. My mom was suppose to fly into Washington DC that day. I waited for her to call back because she was calling to see where my uncle was, who had worked in the Pentagon and still works with the US Army. She called and said my uncle was fine and he was on his way home from DC. (later on I would find out that 3 of his co-workers were killed when they were attending a meeting at the Pentagon and he also knew a general killed) I talked to my mom and was glued to the TV. I watched in horror as the 2nd plane hit in replays and the towers collapsing. You can only watch so much of it and we went out to dinner that night and got away from the TV. I am so grateful that no one I knew was affected by this, but you hear the stories of those who were less fortunate and you wonder how they spent their last moments. 9/11 to me will always be my brother's birthday, no matter what will happen in the years to come. He celebrated his 26th birthday on the 1 year aniversary and has a beautiful 17 month child who came just 18 days later. I have many things to be thankful for and God bless my family that day and many others. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had jut begun m day as a City of Milwaukee Parking Enforcement Officer. I was in the process of issuing my first citation, when a man shouted, "How can you give us a ticket when they just attacked the World Trade Center again". I immediatly turn on my radio and tuned in. Hearing the news, I couldn't believe my ears. I then called everyone I knew in Milwaukee, Chicago and New York. My New York friends who worked in the Trade Center were ok. Just arriving to work 115 floors below, in the mall basement, they immediatly left the area and headed towards China Town. Everyone else was okay too. The day was full of both grief, awe, and hate. My first stop during every New York was a trip to the top of The World Trade Center. It was a view that could never be duplicated anywhere else. I will miss that view, the ride to the top and those who perished. It was ans still is like loosing a dear dear friend and family member. I hope in time that the buildings will be replaced exactly as they once proudly stood. Both as a sign of stregenth, defiance and as a living Memorial to all those who perished 11, September, 2001. That would be a true fitting memorial. Let those who perished and were never recovered, guide and protect the New World Trade Center.
