People have often asked me why I don't move away. Isn't hard, they say. Don't you want to spread out, have a lawn? Well, no. I love this dirty city, if I may borrow the line. It practically breaths for me. So where am I when my city is attacked? In the last place I would ever chose to be. EVER. Vegas. Let me explain. I am a pastry chef and my best friend Marilyn, who lives in Houston, is also. There was a big bakery trade show in Vegas and we thought it would be fun to meet there, do some business, have some stupid fun. I could visit my aunt who lives there too. So all is going well. Then Tuesday morning I wake around 7 am which is 10 am in NYC. I am not a morning person, but for some reason, I can't sleep anymore. I turn on the TV. I see some building on fire. Hmmm, that's the Trade Center...what movie is this? Who wants to see Bruce Willis kill the bad guys this early in the morning? So, I switch channels and it's still there. On every channel. And then tower 2 is going down. And then I realize...I get on the phone, shaking, and call Marilyn's room down the hall and scream at her to turn on the tv. And it begins. The horror, the disbelief, the struggle to understand. Trying to think of who I know who works/lives down there. The people in the Windows on the World restaurant...Trying to call everyone, anyone, but no one because there was no getting through to NY. And then the torture of trying to get home. We were supposed to leave the next day and it was clear that was not going to happen. But at that point we had no idea the extent that this tragedy would affect all lives across the country. All the things that we take for granted, like being able to make a phone call, or getting a reservation on a plane, a train, a bus. It all came to a standstill. All the cars were rented. As a matter of fact, people were BUYING cars just to get out of there. But most people there were from the West coast, so it was fairly easy to escape. You couldn't even get past the Hoover Dam to go in the other direction. I was going nowhere. People were telling me how glad they were for me that I was not home. But I was not glad. The only place I wanted to be was home. I felt guilty. Not that I could do anything, but this overwhelming feeling that I was SO not where I was supposed to be was actually painful. And I am not in Boston, say, or Wyoming. I AM IN LAS VEGAS. I am not a gambler, and everything else closed down. No shopping, no shows, no movies, no attractions, only--you guessed it--the casinos. There had to be SOME distractions, I guess. So, in between my zillions of pleading phone calls to airlines--one day the airports are open, the next minute they are closed--we tried not to be angry. We tried to distract ourselves. We ate a lot of Krispy Cremes. We found little triumphs: $30 in quarters falling out of the I Dream of Jeannie slot machine; finally getting out one phone call to nyc to arrange for someone else to make the Bar Mitvah cake for that Saturday's party (which did go on as scheduled); finally, after begging every reservationist I could talk to to just get me anywhere on the east coast, a flight to Miami on Friday. The airport was madness. Thousands of people on long snaking lines, 2 hours just to get to the door of the terminal. Not a person complaining (except for one German guy who seemed to be not from another country, but possibly, another planet), amazing coordination by the airport staff under such unforseeable circumstances. What humaness we are capable of when pressed. We all wondered if any of this benevolence would last. In Florida, I have family, friends. Seeing my beautiful nieces in the airport, I almost lost it. My heart was breaking, and they made me smile. I stayed there a week, healed a little, and came home. I didn't look out the window of the plane. I knew the hole was there. On the morning of the attacks I had awoke to feed my baby it had been a long night so my husband and three yr old were still fast asleep as I prepard to nurse my baby I turned the tv one and saw the first tower on fire. I screamed for my husband to come down and see. As he came down the second plane stuck the other building. We both watched in silence as there were no words to describe what we were feeling. My husband imeditly ran upstairs grab our three yr old son and said get dressed I am taking you to your friends house. I couldnt move I just held my two boys and watched in horror knowing that at any minute the phone would ring and it would be the air force calling my husband in to protect the rest of our fellow americans. As we got to my friends house he said he loved us and that he woild be home soon. I called my parents to see if they were watching what was happening and all my siblings who are all active duty military members as i walked in, my friend already had her telivsion on and was in tears. I dont rmember crying I just remember a state of shock. All these people in new york in pennsilvania and and at the pentegon lost gone forever and there was nothing we could do just sit and watch and wonder why. So many feelings at one time the feelings of anger hate sadness emptyness fear and a overweling lonlyness. I wondered if we would ever againg be safe when would I see my husband again what about all those people who lost a dad a mom brother sister friend a special love and I was so lucky to be safe with my two children and I couldnt help but to feel guilty who chose them it is so unfair. As I watched the tv all day and thought to myself this is all a bad dream or a movie that is going to end and everything will be normal again. By the time night fell it was time for me to go home and be with my husband and children as i laid there with my husband and two boys it hit me I couldnt stop crying we were no longer safe our worlds and the lives of so many have been changed forever. My husband held me tight and reasured me that there was no way our nation would stand by and let this happen. He was one of the first to go and although he is home safe and sound he will be leaving again soon This war will last for many years and many more lives will be lost and changed forever the only thing I hope that we never forget what happend and we never forget all the soldiers over there right now trying to keep us safe and defend our freedom. If we all stand together the way we did after the attacks no one will ever hurt this great nation again for we are united and untied we are strong and nothing and no one can ever change that. On sept 11 I learned from so many lost dont ever be to busy to tell someone you love them or remind them how wonderful they are. At first it looked like a really cruel picture someone had drawn so I left to return home. I turned on my radio and there was nothing but confusion and chaos. I immediately called my mother to ask what was going on. She told me that the Trade Centers had been hit. I got home and called my friend Jen and we both talked and watched the second plane hit. At first it didn't hit because it all seemed like a movie. But afterwards it hit like a ton of bricks when i recieved a call from a friend who was histerical because her father was in the Pentagon. he's okay and I thank GOD for taking care of us all. There were two passenger planes that were hijacked and their target was the WTC. The planes hit the tower at approximately 8:45 and 9:02 am. This dramatic event was called September 11th because of terrorist attacks that happened that day. This day will be remembered in people's lives and generations to come. It was a terrifying moment for America and it's many other people. I was in Earth Science class at Barker High School when this event happened. Are class heard about the news from a nearby teacher who came in and told us a plane had hit the WTC building. So are teacher got the controller and turned on the monitor and the TV kept showing the 2nd plane hitting the north building of the trade center. Then they showed another plane crashing into the pentagon. While showing the pentagon attack on the bottom of the screen it said there was an evacuation in the White house. Then when I got to Global class our teacher Mrs. Capen had just talked about the life in Afghanistan and how the woman and children were treated. So then you have a person born in Saudi Arabia who lives in Afghanistan planning attacks on the U.S. All I have to say this was a disgusting and sick idea even if it was a joke or something. Osama Bin laden is on the same boat as Timothy Mcveigh the bomber of the Oklahoma City building. The same thing that happened to Mcveigh is going to happen to Osama as soon as we catch him. People are still mourning a loss of a relative or just a really close friend. America will recover with a lot more strength and people will have high integrity. I saw the north tower fall and there were people running, ash and dust along with papers flying through the air. People just barely got out and some of them did not make it out. There were fireman and policeman-helping people that either got cut and bleeding, burnt severely or were caked with dust and ash. The clean up took around 2 to 7months. There was a lot of rumble even people died in there. After they found people they buried them with American flags. There were not many survivors. Some of the people were in the elevators and on stairwells. People on the planes were make call to there loved ones telling them goodbye and that there plane was headed for the trade center. Also there were people in the buildings making calls telling to their families and shouting to get the attention of the fireman. I wake the my 14 year old son and my 9 year old daughter up for school. Meanwhile my 2 year old and a 4 a month is waking up to be nursed. At this time the house is in full swing for the day ahead with the news on as always. Daddy leaves for work @ 630. After that I can't hardly remeber in detail what happened next at what time. All I remeber is the news catching my utmost attention. The two older kids are watching and asking me what is going on. are we being attacked or did the plane just crashed?? I couldn't answer them. As everything unfolds I never knew people could harbor such hatred and ignorance towards another human being. The phone rings I say around sometime before 7 am. My girlfriend is the PTA president of a local school. She is frantic and asked if I'm sending my kids to school? I told her I don't know. Should I send them or keep them at home. I was in such confusion and saddness. I was dumbfounded. I kept them home and I immediately called my husband at work. He did no know what had happened. He immediately told his fellow workers. He stayed at work and said if anything else happens he will come home. But try not to let the children watch the news. He told me "I love you". And I said "I love you to". Give the kids all a big hug and kiss and tell them daddy loves each one of them and that everything will alright. That day the world changed and so did I. I fear flying very much. I don't know if I can ever fly again. But I do know My faith is as strong as its ever been and I'm more patriotic. I thank "GOD" for this wonderful country and people. Tell us your story: Well...kinda crazy...had the day off, and was going on with my every day routine of cleaning, laundry, etc...this was after I got my girls off to school...then went to shower around 9:30...got dressed and went to make a phone call and saw our answering machine light flashing...got the message from my husband who worked at George Washington Universtity, downtown, DC...(only three blocks away from the White House)Said, "Hi, there...I'm okay, just in case you were wondering, and if you don't know what's going on, turn on the news...again..I'm okay...trying to get home at the moment...they have evacuated our building..." As I watched the news the first few minutes, was still not clear what he was talking about...scenes of the towers, and wondering how this could affect my husband working downtown DC??? Then, they showed the Pentagon...and then it hit me...then they talked about how the next target could be the White House... All I remember is getting dressed and getting into our Blazer and heading for my daughter's school...repeatedly hitting redial to get through to my husbands cell phone but all the lines were jammed...listening to the radio all the way there..finally got there, took them out, and tried to explain to them that they just needed to get home and would explain when we got there...kept the raio off even when my 11 year old asked for me to turn on the radio...just kept telling them that they would have to trust me on this, and they would understand why I took them out of school after we got home...that Daddy should be there when we got back, etc... Got home and no "Daddy"...but, another msg...it was his reserve unit from Andrews Air Force Base, wanting hin to report to duty ASAP..so, had to call them and let them know that he might be delayed because he was trying to get home from the DC area... Then explained to the girls what was going on...and thought it was best for them to be home...and they were SO GOOD about it...we are a very tight family, and they knew everything would be alright because they were home with me, etc... Finally, a call came through from "dad" and said he was probably about 15 mins from home...told him that his unit had called from Andrews, and he just asked if I could be sure all his gear was out and ready for him...i assured him I had everything ready for him... Being scurity at Andrews, it was important for him to get there ASAP when he could...so, he made it home, and transformed into his uniform, and back out the door he went.... He's been acivated ever since...he hasn't been back to GW since...and has been activated for another year just this past week...who would have ever thought we would have to have our Security Forces going this long...??I know I am having a hard time dechipering all of this...but, all I ask, is, for all of you to say a prayer for our military members who go to work everyday to keep us secure and safe...some day this will all cease, and I will be able to celebrate his going back to his full-time civilian job...I know how badly he would love to be there again... Our firefighters and police officers risked their lives to save the people trapped in the towers. Some even lost their lives. I slept through the first plane crash, but was very quickly awakened by the endless stream of fire engines heading toward the Brooklyn Bridge. Sirens are a part of the landscape in NYC, but these were different. They just kept on coming. NY1, the local cable news channel would know whats happening, but I was not prepared for what I saw. Smoke billowing from one of the WTC towers. I quickly threw on some jeans and a shirt and ran out to our patio that had a view of the towers. Holy cow! In a panic, I finished dressing, grabbed my camera, and made my way up four flights to the roof, where I found a small group of fellow tennants had already gathered. No one said a word to me as I joined them. The second plane had just hit seconds before. One of guys on the roof was crying, talking on a cell phone and taking pictures all at the same time. It turns out he worked on the100th floor of tower 1 and was running late for work. I remained on the roof for the next few hours. Taking pictures of both collapses. The smoke, dust and paper debris eventually filled the sky over Brooklyn. The radio had all of our attention, reporting on the strikes in DC and Pennsylvania. Raising fears that we were in for more at any moment. Paper from the countless destroyed offices, the edges charred and curled like old pirate maps, began reigning down on us as F16's added to the surrealness of the morning sky. All these lives destroyed before my eyes. For what? I have spent countless hours trying to figure out what the terrorists will get out of killing these innocent people. They are stupid and selfish and I wish to god that I could get my hands on them. God help us. I was not yet born for any of this and it is difficult for me to fathom an event so epic that one would remember forever where they were. September 11, 2001 was my first It was four days before I was to be married and my fianc? and I were wrapping up the last of the details of our wedding. This day was the last I was to work before taking time off for the ceremony, but I was running late at home making arrangements on the phone. As I was walking out the door, my brother called me and informed me someone had crashed a plane into the Trade Center. No one yet suspected terrorism but rather assumed an accident reminiscent of the WWII bomber that hit the Empire State Building. I was watching MSNBC as they showed a replay of the event when my brother informed me this was not in fact a replay, but a second impact on live national television. I was glued to the TV for several hours before leaving for work. I wanted to be sure nothing was headed near Chicago. Chaos ensued at my household. Out minister was stranded in DC. Out flowers lay wilting on a runway in California. Half our guests were grounded in Pennsylvania, Seattle, Arizona, amongst other places. Some help from friends allowed us to make last minute arrangements and the wedding was a success, but it was quite peculiar to enter a new phase of life while so many others were closing the final chapter on theirs. My family was fortunate enough not to lose anyone in the targeted areas so I cannot imagine what others must have felt. I felt guilty that my worries were only that of where to get our wedding decorations on four days notice while others were wondering whether or now their loved ones had survived the buildings collapse. Regardless, I am sure to never forget my anniversary, sadly not for reasons I care to remember. I woke up hearing Happy Birthday, and having my television turned on to see the horror that was happening that day. I remember feeling like it was happening in my home town...that I was there, but I was miles away. I realized I felt that way because it was my home, because it is my country. I was filled with so many emotion and couldn't believe that this was happening. I remeber driving to school, it had this uneasy silence in the streets that I was driving. Coming home I heard the emergency sirens being tested. I was nieve thinking I would never hear that sound or feel as worried or scared as I was that day. Now, everytime someone hears when my birthday is they say "I'm so sorry." or "That must really suck." or give me this sad look. But, I don't feel that way at all. My birthday reminds me of what happend that day. That when someone came to our country and tried to break us down, our country came together to help each other. I distinctly remember on that day, I was in Ms.Barbara's english class. She had left the room momentarily. But when she came back, she told us "The Twin Towers are no more." Some of us asked what she meant, but honestly we didn't know what was so important about that because we didn't know what the Twin Towers were. None of us really knew what that meant until we watched the news. For some reason, I clearly remember the weather that day. It was a warm sunny day. The sky was clear and so blue that you could get lost in it. Ironic that a beautiful day as September 11th would be the day such a tragedy occurs. Maybe thats why its so hard to forget. Without clouds, all we could watch was the planes hit the Twin Towers and feel the dawning realization that this is what a terrorist attack feels like. It wasn't like anything in the movies. It was real and disturbing. Then the towers collasped, bringing a wave of debris and toxic dust. But what really hurts the most is that we lost so many people. Its the realization that somehow you escaped with your life when your friend, relative, or co-worker didn't. Its living with the guilt that you survived. For the heros and all who died, so saddening to the point where we can't forget. 5 years later and we still mourn your missing presence. How do you forget about this? This grief that haunts that ever present hole in your heart. For the people who have lost a son, a daughter, a father, a mother, a cousin, anybody in your family; how they have to continue on everyday life with that burden of grief. But among the chaos and tragedy, we came together. We united in face of this tragedy and said "You know what, you may have attacked us and lowered our spirit, but we will recover and when we do, watch out." Maybe out of the whole day, what I remember the most the un-nerving silence at night. In my neighborhood, I usually hear cars, airplanes, and sometimes, the amublance or firetruck. On that day, I heard nothing. I just couldn't believe what I was hearing. The pictures were horrifying. The pictures of the people jumping from the windows was terrifying. I cried for all the lives lost and the families that lost loved ones. The stories of the hero's made me proud. I was saddened at the loss of Father Mychel, although he died doing what he loved. Tell us your story: When a co-worker first came and told us a plane had gone into the World Trade Center, I thought, it's just a small plane that accidently hit the builing. Then as we gathered around a small T.V. set and saw the picture, I knew this wasn't an accident. We saw the second plane hit and my stomach dropped!. In my head, I figured , that the people would get out of the building, or had gotten out. Later, when I saw the first tower fall, my heart fell with it. I was scared, sad , angry and mostly , in shock. It was one of those times when you want to cry but you can't. It was like watching an old King Kong movie. The scene where Kong destroyed the sky scrapers. I hoped I was dreaming and when I woke up someone would tell me I was crazy. This didn't happen and I'm not crazy!! I felt some violated and vulnerable. This was not supposed to happen in our country. We were the Big guys that nobody messed with!! My heart was broken to know that these innocent people woke up that day and didn't have any idea that they would die. I felt the pain and the horror these people must have gone through. I prayed that they went quickly and painless. But after seeing pictures of people jumping and falling from the building i knew, they felt pain and fear. No one should die that way.
