I have spent much of the day thinking and reflecting, not only about the tragic events of that day exactly one year ago, but about all of the days since then. I have had 365 days to grieve, mourn, reflect, grow, and mature. I have done these things in great amounts. I have achieved goals and dealt with problems, one just as painful as 9/11, and I understand more. However, no matter how much has happened since then, the memory is vividly clear, as if it happened just moments ago. It's second period. Im sitting in the fifth seat of the first row of Mr. Fletcher's junior english class. But im not thinking about english, im thinking about summer. The beach, the sun, the girls, just being innocent. Then our principal Mr. Kemeza comes over the intercom and informs the students that there has been an attack on the world trade center. In a sudden wave of fearfull confusion I think "World Trade center, New York. I dont know anybody in New York." Deep breath... But still worried. I don't yet know the massiveness of the destruction. Later, in history class we watch the news. There isn't any news though. Nobody knows who, or why, or how. There is just an image of a small dark object flying into the tower and exploding. Over and over and over again. My eyes glued to this painful scene as it is infinitely repeated on the Tv screen. Then finally an update. The pentagon in Washington D.C. has been hit by another plane. Fear quickly fades and is replaced by terror. In a brief moment frantic thoughts burn in my mind. I think about my sister Meaghan at the Catholic University of America right in the heart of D.C. I try to remember the tour I took with her a year erlier. Where exactly was the pentagon, was it close to her school? But I can't remember. I wish that I had a map, but I don't. All I can do is hope and pray. That night after returning home from school and watching the news for a few hours I went to a prayer service. The service had been spread by word of mouth. By seven O'clock the church was unusually filled with teenagers. Deep breath... this time I felt better. By now I had talked to my sister and knew she was safe. However, the thing that made me relax was seing all of my peers come together and help support eachother. It was a time when knowing that the person standing next to you was a friend, made you feel safe, even if one of the most horrific events in our history had taken place just hours earlier. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: About three weeks prior to September 11th, I moved in with my parents (they live in Las Vegas). I was sleeping when my mom woke me up and said, "We're being attacked!! We're being attacked!!" Since there is a lot of construction going on all throughout Las Vegas, I heard a lot of noise outside the bedroom windown. Naturally, I assumed we were being attacked in the front yard of the home. Little did I know, It was on the other side of the U.S. However, the terrorist threats filtered immediately into Las Vegas, shutting down EVERYTHING!!! This includes all malls for two days, the post office, airport, some of the casinos. During the next five days, when I wasn't exercising, I was glued to the television. I kept it on the news 24 hours a day, watching updates, stories, and hoping people would find their friends and loved ones in the tragedy. On Friday night, I left the house to go to dinner and was stunned when the bar at the restaurant chose to air sports instead of news. I thought, "How could anyone NOT watch news during a time like this?" It's reasuring to know that NOBODY has forgotten this day, yet the terrorists did NOT stop anyone from continuing with their daily lives. We will do away with terrorists, eventually. I first learned of the catastrophe while driving down Interstate 264 on my way to work. I talked to my wife, who was at home and saw the events unfold on television. I then went to a hotel near my office to see televison for myself, which is where I saw the buildings collapse. It was the most shocking, appalling event that I had ever seen and it was the saddest day of my life. 2.Has your life changed since September 11th? As my life has changed, my belief in my fellow man has been degraded. I am suspicious of more people than ever, and I worry about the future of this country and our world and particularly for my daughter. 3. What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? What should be remembered about September 11th is that never again can we rest easy and feel as secure as we did, knowing that there are people in the world that are as evil as those who commited this act. 4. Tell us your story: The Morning: I woke up Tuesday morning, vowing that it would be just another normal day of my newly established life and routine in Manhattan. In the six month period of December 2000 through May 2001, I endured retinal detachment surgery, a cancer scare, the stress of a rapidly deteriorating workplace in Buffalo, two relocations, a new position in NYC and the end of my marriage. 9/11/2001 would've been my eighth wedding anniversary. Pre-occupied with this backdrop, I was determined to operate in my "plan for the worst but work toward the best" mode. I walked out of my apartment building on East 29th, grabbed a cab on the corner of Madison and headed to the office. Traffic was terrible... Gridlock. We made it about ten blocks up Madison. I asked the driver to pull over so I could walk the last nine blocks to my mid-town office. I got out of the cab somewhere between 8:30-8:40 AM. Manhattan is loud. Especially at rush hour... The horns, trucks, construction, helicopters and subways... You get used to it very quickly. As I got out of the cab and started walking, I heard a louder than normal noise from above, like an really low airplane. I looked up and saw nothing. Other people were looking up also. I didn't see anything, but from the street level of midtown all you can see is what's directly above you because the buildings are so tall. I shrugged it off and made my way to work. I pushed my way through the crowd of co-workers huddling around televisions in the office lobby watching CNN's live coverage. The weird thing was I asked a co-worker why CNN was showing old file footage of the 1993 WTC car bomb incident. He said "No, no... It's live... They think an airplane hit the North Tower." I went numb. That loud sound I just heard on the street now made horrific sense. Just after the South Tower was struck, a girl from our finance group who sat across from me walked in a few minutes late for work. She took one look at the images on TV, dropped everything, screamed something and ran to her desk. A few of us follwed her. Her father was in one of the towers... In the 70's... She wanted to go down to the site. It took quite a few people to convince her to stay put. We told her that she'd be safer and more accessible to family by staying at our office so she could answer her phone and email. It wasn't until that afternoon tht she learned her father was alive. He got out, despite instructions over the public address that is was OK to return to his office, and then ran to the restaurant his brother owned in Chinatown. No amount of planning could've prepared anyone for the shock of what happened. As miserable as I thought my life was, my problems were suddenly inconsequential to the new reality. I was alive... I didn't loose anyone. I was lucky. The 9/11 letters: Transportation and telephone communications in and out of the city were non-existent. Email and online chat were the only vehicles to get the word out. I decided that sending an email was my best shot at updating the most people about my status. What i didn't realize was that these letters would take on a life of their own. I sent them to everyone in my address book. Many of these people forwarded them to others, who then in turn sent them to their contacts and so on, like a pyramid scheme. Very soon I started receiving emails from strangers... Friend of a friend of a friend thing. People printed these letters, saved them, shared them and put them in scrap books. a museum director used them in an installation about the 9/11 tragedy. teachers in schools around the country read them to students in their classes. I was flooded with messages from well wishers. For all of your thoughts and prayers i will always be profoundly grateful... Thank you. I've posted the letters here and on my personal website as i still get asked about them. I'm amazed (and perhaps in denial) by the whole thing. I don't get it... I'm not a hero, I have no survivors tale to tell. Maybe they struck a nerve in some way by documenting the moment from the perspective of an Average Joe from Buffalo who's real happy he didn't take that downtown apartment downtown on John Street. Post 9/11: I've heard that 300,000 people have left NYC post 9/11 for whatever reason. To put it in perspective, that's the population of a medium sized city like my hometown of Buffalo, NY. And now I am one of those people, but not by choice. In the post 9/11, Enron, Worldcom, Adelphia era many people have fallen on hard times. Those of us in advertising/marketing/interactive arenas took a big hit. When the economy gets bad, the first thing companies do is lay off people and cut the marketing budget. The CEO of my firm sold the company, lost clients, and laid off people, including me. Ouch, now I'm a statistic. Manhattan became my savior, muse and lover. The experience has enriched me beyond words.. My priorities have changed and I now realize that the greatest thing God ever created is a new day. If there had to be a day for early dismissal, it is fortunate that it coincided with another of my mornings of oversleep. Now, I don't have to use leave, since the terrorist bombings in NYC and the Pentagon have rendered the matter moot. I got in to the office sometime around 0915, and not long after getting to work, Cuong T. [a coworker] came by to tell of two aircraft hitting the World Trade Center. Thinking this to be an accident, I carried on with examining until it became clear that a crisis was at hand and we were being told to go home. 2. I am glad to have had the requisite patience to endure the 4-hour drive home, most of which was spent exiting Crystal City. I saw the bumper-to-bumper vehicles on Crystal Drive as I walked to Crysal Mall parking, then I realized I might get out a bit faster from the garage by driving down the back ramp to the G3 level. There was a sizable delay there, too, however, and just reaching 20th Street was a struggle. I spent some time listening to K4US traffic [amateur radio club VHF repeater] on my IC2AT, as well as taking a call from Thomas N. [another coworker] on my cell phone. They weren't entirely swamped. I then settled in to a long session of listening to WRC 980 AM, finally breaking relatively free when I hit westbound 23rd Street. 3. It was good to see a slight restoration of a "normal" day in the worweek, once I made it past the I-95 entrance on Route 1, which had some congestion but not what I had expected as I came south on Mt. Vernon Ave. Since I had not eaten since breakfast, I decided on a late lunch at 1430 at the Penn Daw Pizza Hut. I even got a chance to play a few credits on that "Night Moves" sit-down pinball machine at the entranceway. When I got back to the truck, I called Tom on the cell phone, to tell him of my high adventures. He had been out sick. As I talked, I got a call from Ma on the "other line", wondering how I was. I conducted that call as I continued south, finishing up as I entered the parking space. 4. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The alarm went off at 7:45am on Tuesday morning as I was crawling out of bed to work out at the gym. I looked outside; the sun was shining and I thought, ?Today will be a good day for me.? The time was now 9am when I finished my work out. The tragedy had already occurred, yet I knew nothing- why? Well, usually I grab the newspaper every morning on my way back in, however that day, I decided to skip it. I also promised myself no TV unless I had extra time before going to work. I went ahead and got ready for work. I had a 45-minute drive ahead of me and decided instead of always flipping through radio stations, I?ll just throw in a CD. At the time, I worked for a bank so when walked in, it was hectic. All of my co-workers were completely busy. I started helping out the first customer when the man said, ?Wow, we Americans never saw this one coming!? I didn?t question his comment; I just didn?t quite understand his remark. As soon as the gentleman left, my co-worker said, ?Gosh, that customer almost sounded as if this tragedy is a wonderful thing!? That?s when I asked, ?What are all of these people talking about?? Yes, I definitely heard every little detail throughout the day; from my co-workers, as well as the customers. My manager said he was surprised I didn?t know a thing. But I explained to everyone how my morning began; no television, no newspaper, and no radio on my way to work. My co-workers and I engaged in a huge conversation about the technology we have now, and yet sometimes it goes overlooked, as in my case. I know, one way or another, I would have found out through interaction with the public. I realized the difference in the means of communication we have now as opposed to the past. For the following days, the tragedy was everywhere; every newspaper, TV station, radio stations, everywhere on the Internet. It?s a shame we have the advancement of technology to inform us, by any means, of triumphant and tragic events. Unfortunately, it could have done nothing to prevent this from occurring. I learned from my experience. In fact, now, I go out of my way to read the newspaper every morning, watch the news before leaving home, and flipping through the radio stations, no matter how long the distance. I discover something new every day- sometimes good, sometimes not so great, but the point is I?m listening. While I was on the first bus, a man who had headphones on announced to the bus the dreadful news that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center tower. Stunned umcomprehending looks on the faces of firemen, policemen, and the general public, who seemily were all momentarily rooted to pavement facing the doomed towers. As the first tower collasped, two co-workers and I were leaving the street underpass at the Brooklyn Bridge . Roaring thunder, then smoke and a frightened sea of humanity moved eastward in our direction as we navigated northward. The collaspe of the 2nd tower followed shortly. Tell us your story: September 11, 2001 had begun like every other day for me; there wasn't a strange or gut feeling about something going wrong that day. It had only been a month since I've started working at NYU Medical Center-Tisch Hospital. I had graduated from college that May, and it was my first employment as a Registered Nurse. I can remember the events of 9/11/01 as clear as day. About 15 newly employed RN's, including myself, were in one of our orientation classes up on the 12th floor. As the instructor began to teach, we heard sirens of all kinds. However, since it was NYC we just thought that there was nothing out of the ordinary going on. The sirens became louder and greater. Moments later, a charge nurse ran into the room and said, "An airplane has crashed into one of the twin towers! The hospital is now in emergency mode, and class is shut down as of right now!" No one knew what to do or say or think for that matter. We all went to the solarium to see the TV, and sure enough there was an image of a twin tower with an airplane in it. By the time we got to the TV, both twin towers were struck. A sense of panic filled the room, and all thoughts of it being a freak accident were shattered. We knew that it was something greater, and more terrifying than we would have ever imagined having happened in our own backyard. Our people were the targets of a terrorist attack. I then heard the news of the attacks in Washington, D.C.. This was when reality hit me. One of my dearest and oldest friends was in DC for school and an internship for that semester. Immediately I tried to contact my mother to let her know that I was fine and to check on my friend for me. It took about an hour to get through the lines but I finally did. No one heard from my friend, but they were going to keep trying to contact her for me (I later found out that she was safe and unharmed). The remainder of the day I went to help on 13east, the unit where I would work permanently after orientation was over. From the 13th floor all we could see is a huge cloud of dark smoke form were the twin towers once stood. I could only stare in disbelief. They kept us at work until about 5pm and then told us we can go home, since they didn't need any extra nurses as of yet. As I walked out of the hospital, an overwhelming feeling of needing to do something came over me. I wanted to help. I needed to help. Getting on a bus/train to get back home to NJ, when they needed Nurses, MD's, EMT's to help, just wasn't something that I could do. There was another Nurse from my orientation group that felt the same. We walked from NYUMC to St. Vincent's Hospital to volunteer our services. However, they already had enough coverage until the night shift and even until then they were pretty well staffed thanks to the outpour of volunteers. As we were walking away, an officer that overheard our attempts to volunteer, informed us about a triage that was being set up a Chelsea Piers. We then made our way to the west side to Chelsea Piers where we were welcomed. They quickly put us in groups that consisted of an RN, a student of nursing or medicine, EMT, and an MD. Once they set up the triage they gave us a tour and assigned us to stations. My eyes filled with tears to see such a sight. It looked like a scene out of a war film. "Unreal, unreal," these were the only words I managed to make out then. To the triage came officer's and firefighters with minor injuries. They needed oxygen, aantisepticointments, their eyes flushed, etc. Most of them refused treatment. They said things such as, "Just give a little oxygen and some water . . . I gotta go back . . . my friends, family, coworkers, etc.are in there." That night we hoped and waited to see an ambulance bring survivors. It never happened. As the night progressed, I saw how the city pulled together as a unit. Officers, firefighter, nurses, doctors, emts, civilians, everyone young and old. All working for our people, our city, our state, our nation. I would like to thank everyone that volunteered any type of service on 9/11/01. Your country shall remain forever grateful. Tell us your story: I was at home in Silicon Valley at 7:00am, getting ready for work, when a friend called to say a plane had crashed into the world trade center, and I should turn on the news. I turned on the radio, and felt alarmed at the tone of emergency in the reporting. I figured it was a major airline accident, so sad. Then I checked the web, and saw rumours of a second plane, and a third crashing the Pentagon, and a fourth, headed for the White House, being followed by jet fighters ready to blow it out of the sky. I had no tv, but saw the images on the web. I went to work at 11am, two hours late, and found almost no one at work. My boss was there, and he said I could go home. An e-mail message from somebody high up in the company said to go home. So, I left. Even though many of us had expected a large layoff that very day, Tuesday, September 11. We were laid off on Wedesday, September 12, 2001, instead. I have spent now exactly one year out of work. I'm kinda bummed. So I start studing for a new field of employment. Our family friend, Robert, called us and said, "Hurry and turn on the TV." (He's in the military) My Mom sensed that something was wrong because it was very early in the morning. She ran to the TV and there it was. It was the site that changed the world. The first tower was burning! My family and I couldn't believe what we saw. We sat there and stared at the TV, then the second plane crashed into the other tower! I listened to the radio to see if we still had school and surely we did. But security was tight. No one was let into school without their ID's. Everyone was talking about it and whenever we saw a plane pass by some stupid kids would say, "Watch out we're next." I still remember the moment of silence we had at school that year. The whole school gathered around the flag pole and bowed their heads for all the poor lives that were taken. After school my family and I went to my uncles house because it was his birthday. He was very depressed because this act of terrorism had to happen on his special day. He said to us with humor, "My birthday is cursed." The three Arab kids that went to my school were being teased and threatened by the other students. A group of students were saying that they were going to vandalize their dad's store. During Halloween people were saying that they wanted to be Osama Bin Laden, but one of my teachers talked to the principal about it and it was forbidden. Soon after, my boss called us into his office to say that there wasn't any way to get confirmation from Washington , and if we wanted to leave work, we could and we would deal with leave slips the next day (it was 10:10 AM). After I left his office and went back to my desk, I was calm (why I don't know since Oklahoma really tore me up and changed me forever especially since I work in a Federal Government building), then thought, I'd better get out of there. The parking lot will be a bear to get off of. Sure enough, there was a line to get out, but miraculously people were starting to show acts of kindness and letting cars get into line. I drove home with the radio on and really got scared when I heard another plane crashed, this time in Pennsylvania (my boyfriend lives in PA, and they weren't saying what city). By the time I got home and flipped on the tv just on the oft chance my soap may be coming on, I stared at the screen and shut it off. I was like a James Bond movie then, shaken, but not stirred. I've since seen the specials on what happened that day (finally seeing the planes hit the buildings), but still have not seen the images of people jumping. My husband had already left for work and she and I were laying in bed. I had just awakened and I decided to turn the TV on and see what was on. The first thing I turned it to was one of the morning shows (Today or Good Morning America, I can't remember which). I saw the report of a building burning. The sound wasn't turned up very loud on the TV, so I didn't hear what was going on at first. I didn't recognize right off what building was burning and as I sat watching this and trying to comprehend what was going on, the second plane hit the tower. I was shocked, to say the least. Being stuck at home with nothing else to do but watch TV, I sat and watched the horror unfold all day. I know I cried a few times, thinking of what all those people who had been trapped in the buildings and on the planes must have been feeling in their final moments. It was such a sad day. When I got into Chapel( Upper School Assembly) at my highschool, our headmaster approached us and said to the school "a small plane has just crashed into the World Trade Center" I then ran to the front office because my mother was on a plane leaving JFK at 8:30. My mom didnt pick up her phone at all and I was very worried that the plane that crashed might have been her flight. Luckily as I had later found out, it wasn't. I then ran upstairs where I knew there was a TV and watched as the second plane hit the trade center. I then proceeded to gather all my friends from my neighborhood, TriBeCa, which is the Downtown area by the trade center, and began searching for a ride downtown. Unfortunately we were locked out of the city and out of our neighborhood. We then proceeded to spend the next 5 days at our friend Adam's house in Sheepset Bay, Brooklyn. By the time we got to his house, smoke had covered most of southern brooklyn, including the layer of ash on our school ground, and there was a stench of burnt metal and rubber from the buildings wiring. All I could think about was the plane. All I could think about was what was next? What would we do, how would we respond. I began to question what went wrong. Tell us your story: On September 11th 2001 I was taking my 5 year old daughter to school when I heard on the radio a plane crashed into a building. I had caught the rear end of the report so I didn't realize what was really going on. My thoughts were how tragic that an another airplane had crashed and not realizing that it was not an accident. When I arrived at work that morning, radios and TV's were on full force and I had stop to listen what was going on and I couldn't believe my ears. When reality set in all I could think about is my daughter safe and I was pregnant at the time so my emotions really began to get the best of me. Just as I was about to call my daughters school, they called me first to inform me that the children were safe but they were going to dismiss the children early that day just as a precaution. Just as I was about to walk out the door my daughters' older sister called and said that she would pick her up and bring her home with her. I too work at a school were the phone rang off the hook and parents came to pick up their children early, it was such caos but finally all of my 960 school children went home and still through all that, all I keep thinking was how was my daughter which I called every chance I got. I too as did many other people believed that the terrorists would make there way to Chicago, which is also one of the biggest cities, but again thank God for a second chance at life. I rushed out of work and raced to where my daughter was and I finally reached her and hugged and kissed her as hard as she would let me. As I walked through the door of my daughters' sister apartment I could hear the news over and over again and channel after channel with the tragic news of the terrist attacks and all I could do was cry for those whose lives were lost and thank God that my child was safe. My daughter saw the news and really didn't understand what had happened but she new it was done on purpose. She had nightmares for a long time and everytime she saw a plane she was afraid that it would crash and she ran into the house or where she felt safe. Through it all I learned to live each day as it comes and look at it as my last so that I don't take my life and loved ones for granted. Again I am greatful for the safety for my loved ones but in my heart I too will always feel violated and sad for those who were not so fortunate to survive especially for those who lost their loved ones that they will never see again and worse yet never say goodbye. Every day I thank God for another day of life and especially for my two beautiful children as I had a new baby boy after terrible day that will live forever in our hearts and minds.
