I heard about the attacks during a fire drill and listened to radio reports throughout my prep period. For the next three class periods I didn't know the extent of the terror. Announcements were being made over the PA system telling students not to leave the building, that we were now a closed campus. Parents were beginning to arrive to pick up their children. It wasn't until my lunch period (about 12 noon)that I was able to get to a television and watch as the events replayed before my eyes. I was horrified to think that this could happen to our country. I began to worry about my family (NYC EMS and USAF) and friends who live and work in Manhattan. During my next class i calmly told the students what I knew of the events of the day explaining that the skyline that made New York City distinguished, had changed. They asked serious questions about the future and war. Then, once they were satisfied, they asked to be taught. The majority of the students wanted normalcy. So i instructed them to take out their books and turn to page 31. Let's begin with problem #1. I read "Of the tallest buildings in the United States three are in Chicago...three others are in New York City: the Empire State building, the World Trade Center... and I had to stop. We all looked at each other not knowing what to say or think or do. We closed our books a nd remained in quiet contemplation for the remainder of the class period. Lt Robert Cirri, of the Port Authority Police Dept went through the Holland Tunnell at 9:15am with a team from the PAPD police academy. He called me from a police phone at my job as a nurse and said "Im here. I got to help get people out. I love you so much and I will call you as soon as I can". I waited. I watched. I knew he was in tower one. at 10:29am, Tower One fell & NEVER did I think I was a brand new widow. I wanted to go volunteer as an RN, but my mom told me to think of the kids, dont go & wait for Bob to call me back as promised. I thought I saw ripts place him in floorshim on TV at noon in front of St Vincents hospital..it was another police Lt. Then the Port Authority called...I was told he was MIA--missing in action. I dont remember much more of that entire week. On Feb. 9, 2002, my husband's body was found with 5 other PAPD officers, 70 ft below ground, 10-20feet from an emergency exit door. They were carrying a woman out in a stairchair. she had needed oxygen. Radio transmissions indicate that he was on 20's floors. Im so proud of him. and I am lonely every night for him. My best friend--my soul mate--my security blanket. We were to grow old together. He was funny, loved children, loved helping people (he was a paramedic as well). Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Around 9am I was sitting at my desk and I heard someone say that a plane had hit on of the WTC. I told a co-worker of mine and she kinda "pshawed" it like it was a small plane. I had a really bad feeling and said, "Bet it's terrorists. How do you accidentally hit the WTC???" And that was the end of the conversation. I had training at 9:30am and went in like normal, nothing else had been mentioned. At 10am our VP came in to tell us that the WTC's had been hit, along with the Pentagon, the State Building, and they were evacuating the Chrysler Building (mind you this was in the early stages and noone knew what the hell was going on!!!). I immediately thought that this was an automatic declaration of war and started having a panic attack, worrying about all the victims, their families, my family, and friends, and just the world in general. Some of my co-workers who were National Guard got phone calls that they had to leave. How naive was I to think that this could never happen? How naive were we all? We left work early that day and as I was driving home whenever I stopped at a stop light I would look over at the next driver and feel a sense of helplessness from them just as they could probably feel from me. I still had not seen a TV and had no real sense of what was going on, I was listening to the radio completely astonished. When I finally made it home I saw what had happened and could not believe it. Although I knew noone in NY, DC or PA I felt an unbelievable pain in my chest all I could think was that my heart was breaking for these people. Everyday for weeks I cried, my heart still breaks over and over again for the victims, the families and our nation. Even sitting here 11 months later writing this I feel very overwhelmed......... On the morning of September 11th, 2001 I was at my job in Montvale, New Jersey working at my desk. I had my radio on and tuned in to 95.5 WPLJ when an announcement came over the radio that a airplane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I immediately went around the office to relay what had happened. Of course, at that time I was thinking that this was a terrible accident. As I continued to listen to the radio I remember the DJ's talking about the accident and relaying feedback from news people and others. Starting to realize the magnitude of what had just happened. Then I will never forget one of the DJ's, Todd Pettingil saying "another plane has crashed into the other tower and that New York is under attack". Those words to the day echo in my mind so clearly and still send numbness through my body. After countless hours of watching telivision that week it was so emotionally draining. But, I guess I needed to know as much about the unfortunate people and their families. I believe it helped me to deal with my own saddness. Now 1 year later I find myself with the same emotions that I felt last year. To all that have lost, I hope you can find some comfort in the future with the help of your loved ones to lean on. Chris and I were getting dressed and saw on the news that the world trade center was on fire. We grabbed our camera and headed for the roof, as we were looking at the north tower burning I was taking picture when the second jet hit the south tower. Until this point we thought it was a horrible accident, and then we got scared. Someone else came up to the roof with a transistor radio saying they hit DC also. We did not know what to do, thinking this is an attack on New York and where is the next hit going to take place. As the two buildings were burning F16 started flying over head, Chris and I went back downstairs and saw on TV what looked like the south tower gone, but with all the smoke and dusk it looked invisible. We gathered our most valuable possessions, some jewelry and photos and then we went back up on the roof only to see the north tower collapse. At this point, there was about 25 or 30 people on all the roofs around our building. People started scremming and crying. The smoke was so thick that you could not tell where the towers used to be, hoping as it cleared here and there that they would still be there. We went out and got food and money, and the exodus had already started. 1st Avenue was like a parking lot and the sidewalks packed with people, both the cars and people were covered with dusk. Our phones were out, so we could not be reached or contact friends or family. Chris? sister had a conference scheduled for today the 13th at Windows of the World on the 107th floor of the world trade center, her brother-in-law takes the subway which goes under the trade center. We could not reach then and it was scary. Later, we found them, and because all traffic and brigdes were closed (they live in Brooklyn) they came over until the subway was running. After they headed to Brooklyn, we went to give blood, but so many people had already giving blood they had no more supplies to hold the blood. New Yorks can be hard people, but they can also have the biggest hearts. Yesterday I went to work with Chris, usually there?s about 30 people there, but yesterday there was only 5 some of them lost loved ones , Giuliani said to stay home if you can and with all the bridges and tunnels closed no one could get in anyway. I walked around Times Square yesterday and it was like a ghost town, As Chris and I walked home the smoke got heavy, the wind has mostly been blowing southeast, but last evening it switched northeast which is in our direction, we are about a mile and a half from the towers. Our neighborhood is completely blocked off by the police, we have to show ID?s to get below 14th Street, which is kind of scary (big brotherish), but you do feel a little safe, I think. Now, today the 13th it?s still like a ghost town below 14th street, just police cars, truck, and ambulances with sirens on. Every ambulance that goes by all you can do is hope it?s a survivor they got out. People keep calling the police saying there are bombs all over the city, causing the police and army to close down all the land marks and streets. The smkoe is getting heavy again. Tell us your story: The morning of September 11, 2002, I was getting ready for school when my husband came in and told me that a plane crashed into the Trade Building. I started watching the news and listening to hear if it was an accident. Soon after tuning in to the news, the second plane hit the other Trade building. Too me, this was no accident. It was a scary thought. Why would someone do this? I asked this question to myself over and over again. Sadly, a third plane hit the Pentegon. At this point I was extremely horrified. Tell us your story: I had just moved to Westchester, NY and was on the subway for my first day of commuting to Brooklyn Hospital where I am a Physician Assistant. I was on the subway at Wall Street when the train stopped and people outside began pounding on the door. They rushed into the train screaming and crying that planes were flying into the World Trade Center and it was on fire. We all looked at each other. Some people ran out of the train to go see, others stayed put and waited. I was sitting next to a woman who was late for work at the Trade Center. She decided to try and call her husband to let him know she was OK. Finally, the train doors closed and the last train to Brooklyn proceeded out. I arrived at work shaken and could see the smoke from the Towers in the air. I went over to the Emergency Room where I helped prepare for the deluge of people expected. Only a few arrived....some fire fighters with minor burns...some people who were exhaused after running out of the city over the Brooklyn Bridge...a man who had a minor heart attack, a man who was hysterical because his entire office was lost and he was late for work. A woman whose mother was hit by a car as she fled the World Trade Center, a nurse who stopped to help with the injured and who because hysterical and couldn't stop crying for hours. But none of the expected heavily injured ever even made it out. We lingered in the ER until late into the night when exhaused, we made our way to stay at friends homes. There was no transportation home. Today, I remember that day with sadness and anxiety. I fear for my daughter's future. I always open them, but when I did I read: "Plane hits World Trade Center." We usually have CNN on in our newsroom all day, but for some reason the TV wasn't on. I walked out to the TV, turned it on, just in time to see smoke pouring out of Tower 1. I went to my publisher's office and told him the news. He flipped on his TV and after a few moments, we witnessed the second plane hitting Tower 2. "One might be accident, but two can't be," I told him. "I'll start calling people in." I don't why, but I instinctively knew that this would be the biggest day of my 9-year career in journalism. After a few other stops, I went back to the newsroom, where a small group of employees from various departments had gathered to watch the events unfold. It was as quiet as I have ever heard it. The phone - which rings non-stop during the day - didn't ring. The fax barely moved. I remember going into my office, closing the door and thinking of those who were dead or in harm's way. I hit my knees and prayed for them and for the strength to lead my staff and family. When I came out, my phone started ringing - first, my wife, then fellow news staffers wanting to know what we were doing. I told my wife we would be OK and that she shouldn't expect me to be home tonight or maybe for a few days. My employees I told to come in and we'd sort things out later. The rest of the day was a blur, except for one moment. I went home to change clothes after we put out an extra edition, at about 6 p.m. I hugged my wife and 1-year-old daughter. I thought about how oblivious she was to everything that was going on - and how I wish I could be the same way. I went back to work and put out another paper, this one a special morning edition, and at about 4 a.m. Sept. 12, I was finally free to go home. I decided not to clean off my desk, but stopped before I switched off my lights. Moving over to my desk, I found that same cup of coffee I poured nearly a day earlier. I was at work getting ready to do my morning routine, morning pep talks, check supplies, go to the bank, etc. My wife called me to tell me that one of the World Trade Center towers had been hit by a plane or something or bombed. I said "wow!" I hung up after a few minutes and told everybody what happened. It didn't effect us at that time but I still turned on a radio just to see what was going on. A little while later we heard about the second plane crashing into the second tower. We were all stunned and speachless. One of us asked what the hell was going on but no one had an answer. My wife called again and confirmed what we heard. Shortly after the initial shock wore down I started feeling sad for all the lost lives and their families. I continued my routine. I was driveng to the bank while the radio spoke of possible terrorist attacks and then The Pentegon was struck by yet another plane. At that time I knew that terrorists had to be involved, possibly Saddam Hussein, and my sadness turned into hatred as I thought that this was going to turn into Round 2. It was now time for me to mentally prepare myself for deployment. You see I am a member of the Alabama National Guard in an infantry unit. I am also a Desert Shield/ Storm Veteran. When I heard that any plane that doesn't land will be shot down and about the actions of the heros of Flight 93 I felt so much pride, sadness, fear, and so many other emotions that I didn't know what to think. After I listened to radio reports all day and closed up shop, I went home and watched as much coverage as I could. Again, I was saddened, to tears and sobs this time, and even more so when they talked about Flight 93. I backed The President in all of his decisions for "a war against terror" and was ready to do whatever he asked of me as a soldier. On October 3rd I received the phone call I'd been expecting. Two days later I was rolling out, leaving my family behind, knowing only that I'd be gone for a year, possibly two. This was not my first deployment with my wife, but this time was differant, I have young children who don't quite understand what's going on. Even I didn't. You grow up knowing that we are the World Superpower, and you see terrorism going on all over the world, except here. Then all of a sudden it has happened in your own back yard. How do you explain that? We got our orders the next day. My company was going to be close to home providing homeland security, an equally important mission as the one overseas against terrorism. Fortunatly, nothing has happened where I'm stationed, maybe we're doing a good job with our assignment. On September 11, 2002 as I wathced some of the evening T.V. comemerations, news stories, and such, I sat on the couch and cried again as the hatred swelled up inside of me again. A car passed me on the road earlier in the afternoon. On it's rear window was written "'LET'S ROLL!' - FLIGHT 93." Tears swelled in my eyes. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11, i had just gotten home from working a long night shift, and i had brought home doughnuts for breakfast. As i walked in the door, i noticed that my dad was in the kitchen watching the today show with Matt Lauer and Katie Couric. All i could see on the program was the large black clouds of smoke pouring out of the World Trade Center in New York.I thought how awful the sight was and wondered what was the cause. Soon after i had thought about the causes, the reports came in that apparently a plane had crashed into the tower. I knew that this was a terrible plane accident not unlike the past previous plane accidents, only this time a plane had crashed into a building instead of the ground or the ocean. I sat down to eat my breakfast of the doughnuts that i had brought home, and later about twenty minutes later footages of a second plane crashing into the other tower of the World Trade Center came into view. I knew immediately that this was no accident and that we were under attack. I continued to listen to the television reports about the FBI investigating hijackings of planes before the crashes, and knew that it was completely related. I went into the living room and told my dad about the rumors of hijackings taking place on the planes that crashed into the towers, and he nodded his head yes. He had been on the computer, possibly reading related news about the attacks. By then he had gone to bed and i had done the same, with the news on my television while i slept. When i had woken up later in the afternoon, the news coverage was on every channel i could think of, and the depression i was going through was increasing. They continually showed replays of both of the towers collapsing to the ground and i couldnt believe my eyes and what had transpired while i was asleep. Dan Rather on CBS was the anchorman that i had frequently kept up to date with during the afternoon. This was the most depressing day of my life, and the days that had followed had been very hard and sad. I didnt know what this would mean for this country, but that we and the world was going to change forever. We were at war, and the president had said that it would be a long war against whatever enemy had done this to us, even though all the sources had matched Osama Bin Laden to the attacks. I also remember never being so angry before in my entire life, and that i would have killed to have Bin Laden's head put on a stake. It was the closest i had ever come to joining the military. That night i remember all the gas stations in the city being jam packed with customers loading up on gas, because they had said the attacks on the World Trade Center would possibly raise the prices of gas considerably. Days later i remember collecting all the material on 9/11 i possibly could in remembrance of the terrible day. I hope decades from now if i have children, that i can remember where i was on that horrible day, and tell my kids what happened on that day. It was truly the day the whole world cried. My story is not special but my heart was there in New York and Washington DC and Pennsylvania and my heart fell when I heard of the cowardice attack. I was transfering to my last bus on the way to work, 6:30 am. The bus driver say's, " You won't believe what just happened." He told me that an Airplane had flown into one of the World Trade Center Towers. At first everyone thought there had been an accident. No one had radios or anyway to check out the news. The bus driver only new from his dispatch station. I finally arrived at work to see my co-workers huddled around a little tiny TV in one 9 X 9 cubicle. Tell us your story: I am a junior and a history major at Vanderbilt University and was getting ready to go to my 9:35 history class when I heard about the incident at the World Trade Center. I was going through my usual morning routine when I heard a friend of mine, down the hall, talking very loudly to someone on her telephone while listening to her TV with the volume turned up very loudly. So, I turned on my television and I saw what had happened. At first I was just so overwhelmed by the burning towers that the whole situation did not register with me quite yet. I spent some time watching events unfold but then had to go to class. Once I got there, all anyone could talk about was what had happened. Some people had had earlier classes or had not checked the news before hurrying to class and thus had no idea that this act of terrorism had even happened. The professor said some things, and then started to lecture. As the day progressed, things began to hit me, and everyone else, harder. Some people cried, others had blank looks on their faces and some, although I do not know how, went about as if nothing had occurred. Many of my classmates said it was when they saw the towers collapse that all of their emotions were let loose. The situation was especially poignant for me since my family is from New York and my parents grew up near the city. The first day was one of astonishment and disbelief. I do not remember crying on Septemeber 11, but I know I did on the morning of September 12 when I found out that a family member of mine, although distant, had probably been killed in one of the towers. I am, though, one of those who watched horror struck while the events happened on TV. A friend called (lets call her "J") and told me to turn the station while at the same time I was rattleing off about some talk show. She kept trying to interrupt me. I finally got it! Something was wrong. I could hear panick in her voice. I turned the station and watched the second plane hit the tower and then the pentagon was hit. "J" become frantic. Her husband work's involves the president of the USA and he frequents the Pentagon. All day she waited. It wasn't until 6:00 p.m. that she finally knew he was alive and well. At the same time another friend (lets call her "C") was very anxious as well. Her husband has ties to the Pentagon also. She didn't hear from her husband until around 3:00 p.m. Another friend (lets call her "D") had just transfered to the Pentagon. She had just arrived back from Korea after being separated from her family for a year. I had thought she was station in the same area of the pentagon that the plane hit. I called her that morning, praying for everything I was worth. She answered the phone. I just cryed. She was ok. Her two beautiful children still had a mother. She work midshift. Another friend (Lets calll her "CA") lost 6 friends from the incident at the Pentagon. My daughter's godmother's sister just quit her job at the twin towers two weeks prior but she lost so many friends. After an incident such as this it brings us back to the value of humanity. I was the only one at home and sleeping when the phone kept on ringing. I wasn't going to get up and answer it but after it rang for the third time I got up and went to see who it was. It was my dad telling me that he heard on the radio that a plane flew into one of the World Trade Center towers...he didn't think it was serious, maybe just a biplane. I was going to just go back to sleep thinking it was no big deal, but I decided to check it out anyway. When I turned on the TV there was a picture of both of the towers smoking heavily and news reporters trying to relay information to viewers. I got on the phone with my dad and told him that it wasn't just one plane, but two planes had crashed into both towers. Also, I told him that they were regular commercial flights. He couldn't believe it...he was on a train to work and said to keep him informed. I watched some more when it was reported that another plane had crashed into the Pentagon and by then, they had declared it a terrorist attack. I was so petrified and shocked that I could do nothing but sit there and watch, but I did put a videotape in and start recording as I knew this was history in the making. I called my mom at work to tell her what was going on and she was in shock, also. When the towers eventually collapsed I called both my parents who were relaying information to their workplaces through me, as they didn't have a TV nearby. It was really a situation where we could say nothing to describe the moment, and even the TV reporters I was watching did not know what to say. I sat in front of that TV ALL DAY LONG - from the time I turned it on until the time my parents got home around 5 pm. Even for days after our TV station was tuned to nothing but the news. It took me so long to get over watching all of that on TV and trying to soak it in, that I can't possibly imagine what was going on for those family members of the victims who were watching and learning exactly as I was. My apartment looked right out onto the World Trade Center and every single night from my window when I looked out I would see all of the lights and the Twin Towers sticking out above everything else. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a public high school teacher of tenth grade English 2 students in the small town of New Caney, Texas. On 9-11, our Advanced English 2 class had just begun at 9:00 a.m. and had heard about the first plane going into the first tower. We have Channel One programming in our classrooms, so we were watching the events as they unfolded. My students and I were watching when the second plane crashed into the second tower. I felt a sense of panic and fear sweep over me as I realized it was no accident. Then we heard of the plane crashing into the Pentagon, and finally the last plane crashing in Pennsylvania. I just remember thinking, "When will this end? When will all of this just stop?" It seemed there was no end in sight. Obviously, we were all fixated on the images and could not have class at all. I just felt such an immense fear at that point. I wanted to run out of the building, but I knew I could not panic for my students' sake. When the first tower began to crumble however, I felt my knees begin to get weak, and I had to sit against a wall. Tears streamed down my face as I realized the enormity of what I had just witnessed. Little did I know the other tower was about to do the same. I knew I had just seen thousands of people meet their final fate and had watched their very souls be taken from this earth. I felt as if I had intruded, although unintentionally, on their very last personal moment of life. When the other tower collapsed, I wept openly, calling out to God, "Why?" and "Please just make all of this stop." I began to pray for all of the victims and their dear families in front of my students, not fearing any future reprimand from admimistration because I had no other choice but to call on my God and Savior, my sustainer of life. And then, it did all seem to stop for the time being. I believe it took my students a few minutes to realize what they had just seen was very real and not just a scene from a movie. Then they became intensely curious about the number of people who had been in the buildings. We speculated a little, and then I felt compelled to tell them that their lives were going to change from this moment forward. I told them I didn't know how or when, but life would not be the same anymore. They had witnessed an historic event that they would remember for a lifetime. In that moment, we became part of each other's lives forever. I knew that for the rest of their lives whenever they looked back on this fateful day, they would remember where they were and what they were doing and who they were with, as would I. We were bonded in that moment. We saw, we were afraid, and we wept together in that moment. When Christmas came, I wrote each of them a letter encouraging them to hug someone and let the people they love know how much they were loved and appreciated because we all have been reminded that we are not promised tomorrow. You may never get another chance to say the things you really need to let others know. Thank you for giving Americans the chance to remember this day in a unique way. I do hope they decide to call this "Patriot Day" for all those patriots who died that day, as well as for all those who helped total strangers to safety. They are truly patriots.
