I was told that on 9/7 they wanted me to be in town near the hospital (Marquette) as my pregnancy was complicated (on bedrest), my labors are short, major construction delays en route to the hospital and that the hospital is 1 1/2 hrs from home. So we get a hotel and we all are to stay there until I have the baby. No specific date in mind. They are gonna induce on 9/14 when i am 38 weeks for medical reasons. A few times during the hotel stay I go in for false alarms. So here it is the morning of 9/11 and it is my oldest daughter's 4th birthday and I have no money at all to buy her anything and no celebration or anything and she's asking about a party and I am telling her to wait until the baby comes. So I am feeling bad for her. Well the hotel phone rings and it's my SIL telling me to turn on the news. Said there was a plane crash. That's all she said. Tv was on as that's all there is to do. It was on Nick Jr. Blues Clues. Unfortunatley we saw it happening, the towers falling, etc. My dtr saw it. But she doesn't understand it. We cried and my husband freaked out telling me to go to the hospital and I said I can't I'm not in labor. They will send me home. It was just really scary and being pregnant was especially scary. It felt the end of the world came, and that there was no point in having my baby. After a while we did turn the tv off and I took daughter to the pool in the hotel against my bed rest orders. We were just numb. I snapped at the kids a lot unfortunately. I really wish I didn't. The hotel calls to make sure we are still staying because they are filling up fast as the airport is closed. Well somehow it is 11 pm at night now and i get horrible cramping. I call the hospital and they have me come in. There is all these lines of cars at the gas pumps freaking me out even more (they were like this all day) I wonder if I will make it to the hospital, my gas tank is on empty. We have no money at all as I am not on any assistance programs to this date and been off work since June. So I am really worried about getting back to my hometown too. I get to the hospital, and they do tests and at 3 am decide I can go or stay that the BP is stable and there is no pre-clampsia. I watched the clock go to midnight and sighed that the day was over. Relieved I didn't have baby on 9/11! I decided to go back to the hotel. The gas pumps are free. I manage to get some gas with money I borrowed. First thing in the morning I have a non stress test which baby fails so back to the hospital. They keep me monitered all day and I am 1 cm so 8 am on 9/13 they are gonna break my water. Meanwhile all I am watching on tv is coverage. I think if I remember correctly the broke it about 9 or 10. I know at 12 if I didn't have contraction they were gonna start pictocin. At 2 pm they finally started pictocin. You know them hospitals have a bad concept of time. At 4:10 I got my first contraction they were intense I was progressing along with dialation. At around 4:25 I said I had to push and it was so funny the doctor came running down the hall. Meanwhile I said watch I am only 4 cm. I was. I sure scared her. Anyway around 4:40 I had to push and they didn't believe me. After several this way they said to each other that my urge to push hasn't eased up. So they went and got the OB and dang I was 10 cm and in a 3-4 pushes Cheyenne was born at 4:47 pm So that's my 9/11 experience. Some good amongst the bad. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was in NYC about a week before Sept.11, a day we should never forget, after 3 months working at a Summer camp in PA. I'm from Australia and NYC is one of my favorite cities. I remember my travelling buddy had to spend half her day at the UK embassy to get her visa, and thus I was free to roam around NYC. I visited various parts of NYC and then arrived at the Twin Towers, which was an awesome sight, looking up at the buildings. I went inside the foyer and decided to visit the viewing platform. But then I had second thoughts. I didn't want to go up by myself and decided that I'd visit again with with my travelling buddy when we arrived back in NYC 6 weeks later, after our travels around USA. Sadly, I never got the chance to see NYC from the Tower. We arrived in Yellowstone NP on Sept.11 and watched the TV, in horror, as we saw footage of the Twin Towers falling, the plane exploding, etc. It was like a hollywood movie, but it was real. I was upset and shocked. My thoughts were of my fellow Counselors from Summer Camp whom were possibly in NYC still; it was an aweful feeling. Upon our return to NYC, what had been an amazing experience standing in the shadow of the Twin Towers was nothing more now than a pile of rubble. The smell is something I will never forget, and the dust everywhere; total destruction. I didn't get the chance to look down on NYC, but I looked up.. and remembered the fall'n. After the Pentagon was hit I called one of my news clients and went to work for them. They sent me to New York with a reporter and producer that night to cover the story first hand. We were working from the shores of the Hudson in New Jersey as Manhattan was closed when we got there. It was dark when we arrived that night and only got a few hours of sleep before we had to go to work for the morning news. It was before sunrise when we went on the air but as the sun slowly lit the sky we began to see the relentless plume of smoke rising from the ruins. By the second day we began to wonder how long it would take for the lives and souls of these people to burn. On thursday I went into the city on a train to cover the aftermath first hand. We started at the Javis Center where FEMA was head quartered. There were thousands of people lined up around the block to volunteer. Others were bringing food and water for them. Inside we saw all kinds of heavy equipment and rescue gear. There were also exhausted firefighters and EMTs sleeping on the floor. Even the rescue dogs looked spent. One of the most stark images were the concrete saws covered in dust after cutting victims from their tombs. We then went as close to Ground Zero as possible. All of lower Manhattan smelled of a bad electrical fire. People were wearing maskes to filter it. One of our other crews went to the church where people were filling out missing persons reports. They were climbing over each other to show a picture of a lost relative on camera in hopes that they had survived. One woman broke down as she was being interviewed. Walls all over the city were lined with pictures of the missing. After four days we had to return to Washington. One of our satellite trucks had a spot 6 blocks from Ground Zero. We left there at 6:30 pm Saturday. By 1:30 am Sunday we were driving by the Pentagon, the first any of us had seen the building first hand. We had seen both sites in the same day. The images are horrific and will stay with me forever. I will also remember how the people of New York and Washington came together to help in any way they could. Just when something happens to make you wonder what evil exists in the world, the everyday heroes remind you of what we are capable of. With no air travel options, I went by train and had two very moving encounters with firefighters that day. First, while waiting for the train home in Penn Stattion, a column of firefighters arrived by train and was heading to Ground Zero. As they cross the lobby of Penn Station, everyone stopped and applauded them for as long as they were in sight. Later on the train home, I stood in line in the Cafe Car with a group of firefighters from East Providence RI heading home for their city shift after several days at Ground Zero. As we stood in line, one of the firefigheters noticed a photo mural in the AmTrack Cafe car---a picture of the lower Manhattan skyline with the World Trade Center Towers visible and prominent in the picture. Immediately, these tough fire figthers all developed tears in their eyes--so moved by the reminder of where they had been...and where they were going to return as soon as their city shifts were done. On the morning of September 11, 2001 I was on the front of the house with my younger daughter hugging me. My wife just dropped of our older daughter to school. So we proceeded like any ordinary day to the Path in Harrison. On the way to work I was thinking of the day before how some of the workers were laid off and how lucky I still had a job. I arrived at the world trade center and went to the front of the building facing the west side highway to have a smoke, like I do every morning. I heard a loud roar above me so I looked up and seen from the reflection of the buildings in front an explosion. The ground shock like an earth quake and first thing I thought was to run for cover. I first thought to hide in front of the widows, but decided to go into the building. So I ran in and as my last foot was in the entrance all the debree hit the ground. The windows exploded into the building and the elevator door blew open with fire. On impact I fell to the ground and everything went over and on top of me, it felt like a life time. I opened my eyes a few times and watched it as it happened. I remember being knocked out and dreaming of my daughters and wife like this was all a dream. After I woke up I got up and looked around and could not see much, just fire and dark smoke, but I noticed a bright light which looked like an exit. I ran out and hide behind the building next to it. Someone asked if I needed help and if I was ok. I told them I think so and I looked at myself and had blood all over me. I told him I need to the hospital. So he helped me to find more help. As I was walking I looked up and seen the big hole at the building were I worked. People just kept jumping; it felt like a bad dream the whole time I was looking for help. We found an officer and she tried to help me. We walked around till we found an ambulance. On the west side by the entrance was more people that were hurt so they kept us there till another explosion happened. I got up and ran for my life and went behind the buildings in front of me. There were all the ambulances and people to help us. We waited for sometime to see if there more injured people, but all there was so far was six of us. So they decided to send us first to the hospital and as we left the building started to disappear. Two world trade center started to fall and in my mind I was wishing the ambulance would just go faster. We then got the hospital and they helped us in, I was there till 12:00PM or so and they contacted my family to tell them I was ok. I was given some pain killers and had my arms cleaned from the burns. Then is when the pain started to kick in and I was in a faint state. I was told they had to release me because they are expecting more people. So I signed the release paper and began to walk around NYC. I wanted around NYC hiding from the sun because the sun just burned my skin more. I arrived by METLIFE building around 22nd Street and the people there offered to help me. I was given food and had one of there doctors see me. They removed some dead skin that I had on my left arm. I also showered and was given fresh cloth. They then let me speak with my wife on there phone. After a while I went to visit a friend of mine in NYC because I was told NYC was blocked off. I stayed there till 5:00PM and then tried to head home. I took the Path on 32nd Street and then arrived in Newark. I met up with my family and they took me to the hospital at Saint Barnabas. There they treated me the right way for my burns. I had second and third degree burns. I went back to the hospital for three weeks to be treated for them. I had just woken up, turned on the news as I usually do before I wake my children to get them ready for school. And woke up to the news and found out that a plane had just collided into the New York Twin Towers. It took me a minute to process but as many people thought "It was an accident". Then the next plane hits. Confusion, disbeleif hits me. I was in shock. Are we being invaded? and why were we being invaded? Who's responsible for this! Is L.A. next? My children! my children! how do I protect my children? Just then my husband walks in from work, I was so glad to see him home. We are both still in "shock and disbelief" starring at the television. I decided in my unstable state of mind that I was going to take my kids off to school. I woke them up and told them "Look someone crashed an airplane into the into the Twin Towers in New York" They asked my husband and I, "Who did it?" My husband and I responed by telling him " Some Bad Guys." My sons asks why? we said "We don't know why, they're trying to figure it out". They were confused, we were confused. I managed to get my children off to school. As I walked into the school yard parents looked like I felt. They looked so disoriented, some mothers were sobbing unsure whether to leave their children alone without them in school. Tell us your story: This day started much like many others, that I have had since May 15th of this year, that was the day that my Dr. told me that I couldn't do my job any longer due to the diease that I have, My chosen carrer is truck driver, and I have been doing that for 33 years, so my spirits have been down this year anyhow. But on this day I had been asked to move a friend's boat to a facility so it could be winterized. On the way to the boat dock, my friend told me that one of the World Trade buildings had been hit by an airplane, I envisioned a small airplane hitting the building, and a few people tragically losing their lives, and went on about the business at hand. We got to the boat dock and left the boat to be serviced, and went to have breakfast at a local resturant, on the way there my friend told me she heard on the radio in the office that another plane had hit the second building, still nothing registered in my mind other than how bad it was for a few people, and then I thought that it could just be rumor and not to be too concerned. Nothing hit me until we were in the resturant, and the whole place was tuned into what was going on, on the TV. There before our disbelieving eyes was the whole unbelievable thing unfolding before our eyes. Some one said something about going to war, and my only thought was "good" that is what the country needs to give a boost to the economy. Then I came out of my self induced coma, and realized that I have two of my children in the military, this put my emotions on high, and just talking about my kids started me to cry, it amazed me that even thinking that my girls may be somewhere fighting and have their lives in danger, just scared me to death. Somewhere in the comotion and confussion, one of my other daughters called me on my cell phone, and asked if anyone was with her mom, of course I wasn't, so she got into her car and went to be with my wife until I got home. When that happened it was hard to not cry even looking at each other and think of our girls being in harm's way. We made it through the night leaning on each other alot. It helped some to be able to talk to each of the girls, and make sure that they were safe for the time being. Neither of them knew for sure what role they would play in the unfolding events, but would let us know when they found out anything. The next day, we knew much more, the daughter in the Air Force would be deployed in the very near future, so with her being in Idaho with just herself and her son, we would have to drive there and pick up the grandson, and bring him to Indiana until this thing was resolved one way or the other. The other daughter in the Navy was in a secure place and would not have to go into harm's way, so we were releaved about that. 9/12 we left for Idaho, and hadf custody of our grandson by 9/16, and on the way back to Indiana. That daughter was deployed to Qatar, on the Persian Gulf, in early October, and then the real worries began. Even though she was about 900 miles away from the fighting, we still worried for her safety, from terrorists, since that whole part of the world seems to be primarilly terrorists, we thought our worry was justified. She finally came back to the states in Janurary 2002, and came to collect her son in Feburary, since that was as soon as she could get leave to make that long of a trip, and they have been safely in Idaho since. Our lives have not changed much since the events of 9/11, except for making sure we let all of our family know how much they are loved and needed, and not limit it to just our imediate family. We have always been family oriented, but now we need to bring the whole family in closer, and be more closely in contact with them, for God forbid that if something like this would ever happen again, and someone in our family be involved in it, they would know how much they are loved. I grieve for the victims in the towers that were hung-up in the everyday grind, and had forgotten how important the family ties should be. It makes me sad to think of those that were trapped in that situation, true things happen in our lives that make some bad situations, but I always heard to "never go to sleep mad" and "don't be afraid to be the one to say you are sorry." Hopefully this remembering process will make us all a little stronger, and a lot more wary of the evil in this world, it all seems to be getting more and more out of hand, it seems to be time to clean house, and root out the evil that lurks in the dark corners, if it is known that certain people are terrorists, eliminate the problem by what ever means neccesary, before it comes to another thousand innocent people being senselessly being killed. Our famly tries to go on as before, and we are doing good, we live as we did before 9/11 as much as possible anyway. We have hopes for the future, hope for going back to work, hope for more healthy grand children, hope for a bright future for the next generations to come, hope for the rest of the world to combat and beat the evil that is there, hope that our leaders can keep us all safe, by seeing the peaceful way to resolve their problems. They were showing what looked like to me some old footage of the 1992 bombing in the under ground parking. Then I realized that it was LIVE when I saw the 2nd plane crash into the sencond tower, I froze , I thought what in gods name was I seeing. I was so confused as the moments passed & the news kept coming in. I starting praying & crying for all the souls that I had passed before my eyes. I cried for the nation, my nation, my home , my families home for the last 13 generations had been viciously attacked, I called my mom in Ohio & we both prayed & cried, for the world as we knew it was no longer the same, so many , so fast, for what????? WHY civilians??? My husband calls from the living room " They hit the Pentagon & its on fire." Dear god, whats next. Flight 93 was what was to be next. I was numb , good god some one take control here & then some one did & 93 came down in a field. I was in a haze as I went off to work. When I got there everyone had very long faces that showed a combonation of sadness , anger & bewilderness. As I walked through the lobby at work I could hear the news reporter on the television stateing that the tower was coming down. When I got to the T.V all there was was people running for their lives & what looked like the end of the world chasing them. I kept my composure & continued on with my day knowing in my heart that this was a wake up call for all of us, & that we would join together to find the people that planned, financed & executed these heartless attacks not just on us Americans, but on the world & the people that call America their home away from home. After what seemed like the shortest yet longest day of my life, I got home from work & prayed & cried & thought long and hard about life itself & of the people that have lost so much, so fast......... Tell us your story: I HAD STAYED HOME FROM WORK WITH A HEADACHE AND ABOUT SEVEN FORTH FIVE OR SO ONE OF THE GIRLS FROM WORK CALLED AND SAID TURN ON YUR TV. I DID AND AT FIRST I THOUGHT THERE HAD BEEN AN ACCIDENT AND IT WAS AWFUL. BUT AS I LISTENED TO THE PERSON ON THE TV I REALIZED WHAT WAS HAPPENING AND THEN FROM NOWHERE CAME THE SECOND PLANE AND I WATCHED AS IT HIT THE SECOND BUILDING AND I JUST FELL TO MY KNEES AND ASK GOD TO PLEASE HELP THOSE PEOPLE. Oddly enough my husband was home working on the 11th. The baby and I were on the couch reading when our phone kept ringing. As I was recieving a message from my mother of the first plane Ed was coming up the stairs, He had himself recieved the same message from work. We met at the top of the stairs and turned on the t.v.. As we turned to watch we both just held our son so tight and saw the other tower be hit. It is rare for Ed to be home I just couldn't belive that God let us be together to hear and see all the devastation. all the emotions you felt were so overwhelming. To be able to look in the eyes of your innocent child and see such hope gave us both tremendous peace. One year later with Brian now 2 I now can relate when a grandparent or family member recants where they were for World war 2 or President Kennedy's death or when Elvis died. Years from now I hope all of our children and Ed and I never forget that one morning where time just stood still. She told me I needed to turn on the tv that we were being bombed. I hung up and told my husband what she said. I turned on the tv and I was shocked at what I was seeing. I could not believe what was happening. I just kept thinking who could be so hateful to do this to innocent, unsuspecting people. Why were they doing this? I didn't know these kind of people existed. Over the past months since then I can hear a low flying plane and I'll watch and wonder what it may be doing. I would have never given one of those planes a second thought befor 9/11/01. Today, I watched, as I did one year ago, those horrible events over again. The only difference today was that I didn't feel shocked as I had before. I felt pain and grief for my country and the people I share it with. I ask God to forgive me, but I feel hate for those responsible. I didn't know what hate really felt like before. Tell us your story: The horrific events of September 11 actually occurred on September 12 in New Zealand. 8:46am in NYC was 12:46am New Zealand Standard Time on September 12. When the South Tower of the World Trade Center fell, it was 1:50am in NZ. When the North Tower fell, it was 2:29am here. Although it was the middle of the night here, I saw some of the ghastly September 11 events unfold on TV. My mother had been listening to the radio and heard about it, so switched on the TV. After the South Tower fell, she came and got me and together we saw the North Tower fall. I remember the aerial on top of it disappearing into the dust as it collapsed, a bit like the mast of a ship sinking into the ocean. Anyway, I would like to share what I wrote in the September 12 entry of my 2001 diary, and entry around which I put a black border as a symbol of mourning. A little disclaimer: there are some inaccuracies (in particular my estimate of how many had died plus calling Flight 93 a 747), but in the immediate aftermath of such a catastrophic incident, it takes a little while for the full story to emerge. OK, here is what I wrote in my diary for September 12, 2001: "An act of unspeakable horror and incredible audacity has been committed in the United States of America. We're talking tragedy on a monumental, staggering scale. The twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City have been utterly destroyed, almost certainly killing well over 10,000 people. And in Washington, D.C., the Pentagon has been damaged by fire, with part of it collapsing. How did this happen? Well, terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners, two belonging to American Airlines and the other two to United Airlines. One of the American Airlines jets and one of the United ones had taken off from Boston bound for Los Angeles. When the terrorists took them over, they changed course for New York and were deliberately flown smack into the World Trade Center Towers. The North Tower was hit first and went up in flames pretty quickly. The South Tower was hit 15-20 minutes later. Meanwhile, an American Airlines flight bound for LA was hijacked after taking off from Washington's Dulles International Airport. It was deliberately crashed into the Pentagon. Finally, a United 747 flying from Newark, New Jersey to San Francisco was also hijacked but failed to reach its target. It crashed in a field near Pittsburgh in southwestern Pennsylvania. "All 266 people on board the four aircraft, not counting the hijackers, perished in the crashes. Countless more have died in the World Trade Center buildings, though some did manage to escape with their lives in the immediate aftermath of the plane strikes. But the towers were ultimately unable to withstand the impact of the crashes and the explosions that followed them. As people jumped to their deaths to escape being burned alive while others waved distress signals from the upper floors of the 110-storey edifices where they were trapped, the buildings collapsed, just totally disintegrated. The South Tower, though hit later, went first, and the North Tower followed it soon thereafter. Needless to say, New York was in utter chaos and pandemonium, though there was probably not as much panic as there could have been. "The US Government responded by shutting down all airports to prevent further hijacks. International flights were diverted to Canada or their departure points. Air New Zealand cancelled all flights to the USA. "I once visited the World Trade Center, in July 1983 when I was 11. Have actually stood on the roof of the North Tower (correction: it was in fact the South Tower), which until today was the world's highest outdoor observation deck. So to see those twin towers collapse the way they did was truly sickening and heartbreaking." That's about it, although later I note that when I had a walk in the afternoon, "it felt good to get away from all the insanity on TV for a while". My walk took me along a street that runs parallel with Wellington Airport's runway. One thing I didn't note in my diary, but will always remember and now note here, was seeing a plane come in to land and experiencing a sudden feeling of irrational fear that the terrorists had come to New Zealand. The feeling did not last very long, and I quickly berated myself for it. The plane was on a normal approach path to the runway and sure enough, landed safely without incident. But I guess that seeing this plane approaching, even though what it was doing was totally routine, brought back the memory of what I'd seen on TV. I have never felt scared to see a plane before or since. But on that day, for half a second, it terrified me. So there you have it: immediate first impressions of the horrors of September 11 as seen from one of the few countries in the world where it was actually the 12th and not the 11th. But it was all absolutely shocking and horrific regardless of the date. And certainly in 2002, we marked the anniversary of September 11 on the 11th, just as everyone else did. Indeed, New Zealand started the "Rolling Requiem" going. Some final notes before I close: I didn't get a lot of sleep after seeing Twin Towers fall. It was probably two or three days before I started to get over the shock of it and began to feel a little bit normal again. One reason why I felt so affected by it was because my parents and I spent two years in the USA from 1982 to 1984. We lived in Bethesda Maryland, and my father worked in Washington DC. To this day I follow the Redskins and the Orioles, and although a Kiwi, feel a little bit American. We'd driven past the Pentagon on plenty of occasions (it's near to one of the bridges that crosses from DC to Virginia). And of course, we'd visited the Twin Towers. So when they were attacked, it felt a little personal. The thought went through my mind: "What if it had happened when I'd been there?" I had enjoyed my visit to the Twin Towers, and it was a happy memory for me. I have some souvenirs from there too, which obviously have special value, historical and personal, now. But whenever I remember that visit, I will also remember the dreadful images of September 11. So this happy memory has been tarnished forever. I almost feel like a small part of my childhood has been robbed. But that is nothing compared to the robbery experienced by those who lost loved ones on September 11, and I fervently hope and pray that nothing like that will ever happen again. On that day I was at the Marlborough Middle School figuring it was going to be a regular day of school. During literature class, the principal came over the loud speaker and informed us that there had been an attack. I had no idea what he was talking about because he didn't give us the details. Regardless, immediatly I felt sympathetic for whoever was attacked and the families that lost loved ones. None of the teahers would let us watch it on T.V. or even talk about the details because they didn't want us to know about it. One of the teachers decided to turn on the televisionto show us what was going on. That's when I relized the Twin Towers had collapsed and thousands of people had died. I continued on with my day as all the other did, feeling sorry for all of the victims and the families affected by this tragity of September 11th. When I got home I turned the T.V. on right away and learned a third plane had crashed into the Pentagon and a fourth plane into a field in Pennsylvannia. Until I fell asleep, I continues to watch the newsand couldn't believe my eyes ever time those two planes crashed into the Twin Towers. My life has definatly changed because of September 11th. For Instance now on a daily basis I think about what goes on in other countries and how they always have to deal with terrorism and innocent people being killed. I think about how every day in some countries, they don't know if abuilding is going to blow up and if their families are going to be gone forever. Maybe a car that they are walking by has a bomb in it and it will go off. Also I think about the families who were affected by September 11th and how it could have easily been me in one of those planes or one of my family members. Finally my life has changed because of what happened on September 11th because now I might not want to fly on planes or travel very often. Many things should be remembered about the tragedy of September 11th. For instance, the firefighters and policemen of New York should be remembered. They should be remembered for their heroic actions on September 11th. They risked their own lives to dive into all the decay of the Twin Towers to save as many people as humanly possible. Also the passngers on the plane heading for the Capitol Building should be remembered. These passengers overtook the terrorists, crashed the plane so that no civilians would die. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was on my way to school, on September 11, 2001, when the brutal attacks occured. I remember driving to school listening to the radio when we heard the bone chilling words, "We are being attacked". By this time we my mom was already in tears and my brothers and I werent sure how to take things. As we kept on driving the feeling was getting worse and worse. That day at school, in all classes, we talked about what was happening and going on in New York. September 11, was a very dull, with the presence of fear in the air. As my family has come to find out, one of my brothers friends' parents were killed in one of the planes that got highjacked. It was very sad, but to our amazement, he didnt take it that bad. His words were, "I know they are in heaven, and that's all that matters to me." We had a light vigil for not only his parents, but every single person that was lossed in the attacks. Til' this day we can look back and remember that sad day that has changed the lives of many. This event will be a very memorable and touching event that, I am sure will be in the history books of our grandchildren, or maybe our children. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Septemeber 11th, was a day of great tradgedy for the people of the United States. It was a bright day but the skies soon turned into two huge heaps of smoke as three planes hit both of the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon. These were acts of terrorism; not something that children in the U.S. are used to or understand very well. September 11th was a learning expirence to children as well as adults. The September 11th, attacks really "hit close to home" for me. Little did I know, my father was flying to New York that day for business. He was flying out of Logan Airport around 8:00 AM. The same time that the two flights that were to hit the North and South towers of the World Trade Center took off. Once my mother heard the news that two flights from Logan Airport hit the World Trade Centers, she was terrified. She thought that my father was on one of those flights. She figured that those planes were actually going to New York City. Meanwhile, my dad, who thankfully was on a different flight, was just flying over the city when tragedy struck. He told me later that the captain came of the plane's speaker and said "Look to your right, you are witnessing today's news." My dad's flight was the last one to land in LaGuardia Airport before it shut down. He tried calling my mom on his cell phone, but had no luck since the cell phone towers were on top of the World Trade Centers. He then took a cab and headed out of the city as fast as he could. My father soon got in touch with his boss, who was also in New York City, and met in the outskirts of town and headed for home in a rented car. Sam, my dad's boss, called the office and told them to call their families and say that they were both safe, together and were coming home. My mom was realived when she got this phone call. I was told at school what happened that morning, but was shocked when I heard my dad's story of what went on that day. Since September 11th, my life has changed in many ways. Terrorism wasn't something that I, as well as many other children were familiar with before these attacks. Now I am knowledgable about this subject. Since my family goes on vacation at least once a year, I am more cautious about the environment that I am in, Also, I have learned not to take things for granted. Tomorrow is not guaranteed, so I learn to not sweat the small stuff, and I get along with people easily. Finally, I've been more patriotic since 9/11. I've done this because, like the lyrics say in "Proud To Be An American" by Lee Greenwood, "There is pride in every American heart and they can't take that away". I've learned that people may not like what we do, or how we live, but they can't take away our American spirit. I think there are many things to be remembered about the attacks that occured on September 11th. ONe thing to remember is all the lives of the innocent people that were taken on that tragic day. Another thing that we should remember is to analyze things very carefully. Now reporters are saying that there were small warnings that maybe an attack would occur, I also think that after the U.S. Cole bombing, security could have been "stepped up". Finally, I think that we can't let the terrorists "win" by cancelling trips and events just becuase we are afraid to fly. Our economy dropped since these attacks and have left many people jobless and hard for them to feed their families. Toegther we need to show our American spirit and help boost our economy back up. Although during that dreadful day myself along with my two sisters and my sisters husband were in San Fransisco. (Our Aunt had died and we were settling her estate). It was early morning, we had just go up and turned on our t.v. in our hotel room....what we saw we thought was a movie, but as we changed stations the same thing played. One tower was hit and them the next, we could not believe what were watching was really happening! We kept saying this can't be real....but as it was obvious it was we cried in horror!! It wasn't long before all flights were grounded, what was commmon from our hotel to hear a plane take off or land practically every other minute drew silence....and eary silence, it was like life all of a sudden stood still!! Everyone was glued to the t.v.....it was very difficult to get motivate and go out the door for breakfast, but as we did so even them we were glued to the t.v. as well as all the other patrion of the hotel!! We still had four days left of our stay in San Fransisco...not knowing for sure if were even going to be able to (or wanted to for that matter)fly back to MN. We called the rental car agency and basically told them we were not giving up our rental car and were considering driving back if necessary! Although by the time our trip came to an end and flights were starting up we thought it was as safe as ever before to fly and we did so. This last year has been a difficult time for everyone....we thought we were so safe....who would have ever thought of using passenger airliners as bombs!! (didn't realize how much hate some people hold within themselves)!! As the Anniversary arrived and all was shown all over again...it came back all over again!! I can't even image what it must be like for those who lost loved ones on Sept. 11!! But I will continue to pray for them and America. We took a lot of thing for granted, but we as a nation are stonger than before.......we are a nation of God!! PEACE!!!!
