While attempting to sleep in for the first time in months I got a call at 7 from my best friend Jennifer. This was not uncommon for Jen because she had a 7 month old daughter at the time. Jen was especially frantic that morning. She said hurry hurry turn on your tv. I said what channel and why? She said any channel just hurry. While thumping to the television she was raving and ranting about two planes colliding. My half asleep ora immediatlet arose to alert. Why? I needed answers. tears came so quickly and then panic. where was my dad? I called my mom and she said that he was okay. it was so strange. My son turned one the same day all this happened. I ran into my mother in laws house to grab my sons shot record and looked on the tv to see both buildings on fire. I thouhgt to myself of how everyone must feel. Families loosing loved ones. My son's birthday never the less was full of sadness. I only hope that my son will look on this day as a memorial and remember that it is special to him and the country. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was 15, just starting highschool. I woke up that morning thinking, "augh, another day at school". But boy was I wrong. I was in English class at the time when the principal came on the intercome, explaining the events that had just happened a few minutes ago. I was shocked. The girl I was talking to just a second ago started to cry because her father was schedualed to be on fight 11 that morning to LA. I tried to comfort her as best I could but there was nothing I could do. She later found out that her father had missed his flight. We were greatly relieved. They cancelled the rest of our classes for the day to watch the news. I started watching a few minutes before the second plane hit. I saw it all live. I felt my eyes starting to swell. I knew my uncle worked there but I had a feeling he was safe. Rumors were flying that it was some sort of terrorist attack and that the Prudential building here in Boston was hit by a plane too and was on fire. I had close friends with parents who worked there and they were very upset. One girl fainted. I didn't know what was happening. I went back to the TVs after that with one of my good friends. We watched the towers collapse live. We were afraid something might happen to the school. We weren't allowed to leave, so all we could do was wait. After school was finally over, I mother picked me up. "You know what happened today?" she asked. "Yes, do you know if Uncle Allen is ok?" "He's fine, but the Coffeys are missing". We had known the Coffeys for a long time. My father went to college with them. I didn't know them real well, but we were friends. I figured that maybe they were in a hospital and were safe, but later on in the week, we found out they didn't make it. That was the first time I saw my father cry. I cried too. At about 5pm that night, on 9-11, I got a call from a Lieutenant from my Civil Air Patrol Squadron. He told me that we were called to spend the night at Logan airport to make sure no planes took off. This whole thing was chaos. Everyone in my squadron was taking shifts for sleeping. I was with my good friend Chris and a couple other guys. The place had news crews and military personal everywhere. I didnt get much sleep that night, maybe only 1 hour. I thought mostly about my missing friends, the people who lost their lives, why this happened and why wasn't I one of the people who died today. They turned all the TVs to President Bush addressing the nation. My eyes started to swell again, but I managed to keep back the tears. I was so confused about this whole thing, I had no idea what had happened. I couldn't believe it. Tell us your story: After returning from a 8 day vacation on 9/9/02 at Disney World ( I mention this due to the park shut down due to they felt it was a target that day),on 9/11/02, I was sitting at my desk at work when someone ran by going over to a tv in antoher persons office saying there had been a plane crash. When they turned on the TV I heard it went into the World Trade Center, so I jumped up to see. We were all standing there in shock wondering what could have gone wrong with our air traffic system when we saw on TV, LIVE, the second plane hit the other tower! We knew then we were under attack. We wondered how many planes could be in the sky ready to attack...then as we kept watching numb, awe struck, we saw smoke from the Pentagon and then the plane went down in Pa. We all could not move in disbelief. Our company, SCT, (corporate ofc based in Malvern Pa. not far from the downed plane), we are in Columbia SC, shut down operations and allowed us to go home to be with our famlies asap. The rest of the day we were glued to our tv's flipping channels trying to make sense of it all and gather all the information we could. Today on the one year anniversary we gathered at our half staff flag and had a moment of silence followed by a word of prayer, at 846am. I personally have heard thousands of stories from different people, such as a friend was working on the 53rd floor in the elevator shaft of tower two, he was very lucky to get out. My family didn't lose anyone, but being a new yorker and surrounded by the horror of this it hits me so close to home. I am a student at Adelphi University and man that day will never ever be forgotten. September 11, 2001 I wrote this poem on that night. I live off of Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont. The shrills of screaming everyone felt Screams of distress yelling for help. Trying to breath gasping for fresh air Crawling on the ground to find someone who cared. People walking home over the Queensborough bridge Mothers waiting for daddy to come home and hug his kids. Many returned but to many didn't Many found out that they wouldn't be home for dinner. Cell phones didn't work relatives were distressed Nobody knew how long it would take to clean up this mess. The damage took out buildings on surrounding blocks We lost thousands including firefighters and cops. All that is left are pictures in frames Plaques are engraved with all of their names. My husband and I had just sent our kids out the door to school and I stepped in the shower to get ready for work. The phone rang and it was my niece asking if we had heard what had happened in New York. I called up to my husband and told him to turn on the TV, wrapped myself in a towel, then went up to see what was going on. I spent the next three hours wrapped in that towel unable to move away from the television. When the first tower collapsed I remember covering my mouth with my hand and looking at my husband to see if what I thought I just saw really happened. I will never forget the look of horror in my husbands eyes or the tears running down his face. He is a fireman and knew the tragety of what had just occured before I could even comprehend what I had seen. The last thing I remember distinctly from that day was hanging our flag on the front of the house.It stayed there for the next six months. In the days and weeks that followed I felt like I was walking around numb and surrounded by a fog that wouldn't lift. I couldn't stop watching TV hoping that they would find an area where people were just waiting for the rescuers to help them out. My husband knew what was going on at ground zero as it was now called. He heard from some of the fireman on our department that had delivered a new firetruck to help replace what had been lost. They worked at ground zero while they were there and came home devestated by what they saw. On October 25th my husband and I drove to New York to attend some of the funerals of firemen that had died on September 11th. We went to six funerals in two days. Most of the caskets were empty with only a framed picture on top. At some, there was no casket, just a table with mementos and pictures. We met the wives and children, mothers and fathers, friends and relatives and brother firefighters that filled the funeral homes to overflowing. On Staten Island we stopped at a corner bar between funerals and the people in the bar bought us our dinner and took turns sitting with us, they told us their stories and who they knew that had died that day, they all knew someone. Along with the sadness that prevailed for those two days that we were in New York I will never forget the generosity of the people we met. We were thanked over and over again for being there, by the families, by the other firemen, by bus drivers, taxi drivers, policemen and by perfect strangers on the street. Anyone that saw my husband's dress uniform and noticed that he was from out of town took it upon themselves to let us know how much they appreciated our being there. In a way it helped us to feel as though we had done something to honor the men and women that died by being there to show our support to their families and their city. What beautiful strength in the face of tragety the people of New York have. I will never forget them. They helped to heal me and I can only hope that I may have helped them too. Terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in New York, killing thousands of innocent people. On that day, I was in school as usual. I recall being in math class and was having a trial bus safety evacuation. We were all in the buses, and our driver was trying to make us quiet down in order to discuss safety issues with us. He then proceeded to tell us that two planes had hit a building in New York. We were all a little confused and curious to find out more details. We returned to class, and a few moments later, the principal came for a brief meeting with our team teachers in the hallway. He informed them about the horrible incident that had just taken place in New York. When our teacher returned to the classroom, she was very upset. We could all tell something was seriously wrong. We briefly discussed what had happened with her. She couldn't really tell us a lot because she didn't really know that much either. Also, the principal thought it was best if the students discussed the situation with their parents, rather than in school with their teachers and peers. My mother picked me up that day after school. I asked her what had happened and she explained to me that two planes had hit the World Trade Center in New York and another plane hit a section of the Pentagon in Washington D.C. When my father came home from work, I also discussed what had happened with him too. That night, I watched the news to get as much information as possible. They kept showing the planes flying through the Twin Towers over and over again. I was very sad and shocked at these awful incidents. The thought of so many innocent people dying and trapped inside those buildings upset me the most. The next day in school was extremely different from the others. Everyone was affected by the previous days events in some way. This was the topic of almost all of our conversations in class. We still couldn't believe this actually happened. It wasn't just a dream, it was reality. The fact that both planes left from Logan Airport in Boston, where I currently live, frightened me because I have flown out of that same airport several times. I always thought it was extremely difficult to get weapons on a plane. I always thought that flying was safe. Soon after, it was discovered that some of the terrorists aboard the two planes were criminals wanted by the FBI; I couldn't believe it! How did they get through security if they were on the list of people wanted by the FBI? As more and more evidence was revealed, I became more and more amazed by this crime. The number one question that's been in my mind from the day of the attacks is why would someone ever want to do something like this? Why would you perform such a terrorist act and kill many innocent people including, firefighters, police officers, rescue workers, and all of the people inside the building? Not only American citizens were killed during this act of terrorism, but also people from all over the world. After the attacks of September 11th, I have learned to be more thankful for my family and friends. People who lost their lives - firefighters, people in the planes that crashed, along with the people inside the Twin Towers should be remembered on September 11th. I realized how precious life is and how quickly it can change. Because of the events that occurred on September 11th, we are now a stronger nation. Patriotism is being publicly displayed with American flags waving outside of homes and on cars. People have come closer together and become friendlier as well. As you can see, September 11th, 2001, is a very tragic event in history that will never be forgotten. We were in Psychology class, fourth period, and Mr. Williams had just finished up his lesson. Mr. Rotundi came in the room to speak to Mr. Williams. He whispered something in his ear, and then left. We paid little attention to this, as we were just glad that another lesson was over. After Mr Rotundi had left, however, Mr. Williams addressed the entire class, saying that two airplanes hit the two towers of the World Trade Center. At first, we thought that maybe it was just a joke; a mind game that Mr. Williams was playing with us. There was a lot of denial. As the day progressed, however, we learned more about the attacks and that there had been more attacks than only the World Trade Cneter bombings. The fact that a plane came down in Pennsylvanis scared us, as the school is probably less than fifteen miles from the New York-Pennsylvania border. I remember how everybody forgot their personal problems and was focused on their television sets for the rest of the day, and even afterwards. Most of us didn?t even do our homework that night. Although it was a terrible and unforgivable act of violence, it did something that no leader could ever do on his own. It brought a nation together. Congress even agreed with the President, for once. It was ironic. The worst tragedies seem to be the only things that bring everyone closer together. At that time, I was on my way to work, unaware that anything out of the ordinary was happening. The moment I walked in the door at work, I was told the horrible news: a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. Within a couple of minutes, someone had turned on the television and we were all watching in horror and disbelief, when another plane crashed into the second Trade Tower. When we saw the news about a third airplane hitting the Pentagon and then a fourth going down in Pennsylvania, my boss allowed us to leave, so we could spend the rest of the day with our families. None of us knew if it would be our last day on earth, as well, so we wanted to spend what precious time we thought we had with our families. When my husband and I arrived home with our children early that afternoon, we put them down for a nap so they wouldn't have to see the devastation and destruction on tv. My husband kept speculating that President Bush would probably land at Offutt Air Base, only a couple of miles away from our house. Only a couple of minutes after he landed, we heard on the television that President Bush did indeed land at Offutt Air Base. It was kind of neat to know that he was that close to our house, yet really scary to think that he may be the next target of the terrorist attack! I thank God every day that we weren't harmed in any way, and I pray for all the victims and families of the horrible acts inflicted on our great country! On September 11, I had finished my shift and left NY an hour before the first plane hit; I was considering staying late but could not because my husband was in Arlington VA on business, and I had to make sure I got our kids to school. I got them to school, and my mother called me just as I was lying down to go to bed, telling me to turn on the TV. I watched in horror, and then I saw the news about the Pentagon and thought of my husband. As he watched the plumes of smoke rise into the sky from the Pentagon from his vantage point in Arlington, he tried to call me and could not--his cell phone wouldn't work. He used a companion's phone and got through just as he heard a rumor about "a plane hitting the World Trade Center." By the time he and I got to speak, the first tower had fallen. He and I were disconnected, and he decided to drive home immediately. He got home just before nightfall. I decided to round up my children after speaking with my husband on the phone, to get them out of school early--not knowing what was happening nor what was to come, I wanted them with me. The most heartbreaking moment was at the middle school when I saw two children crying inconsolably because their parents had dropped them off at school and then headed off to their jobs--at the World Trade Center. Their cries still haunt me. One of my daughter's classmates at the grade school lost his father that morning. In the weeks after the attack, I noticed that many homes went up for sale--presumably because of a death in the family, or being directly affected by the tragedy. On that day I lost friends, neighbors and former classmates from high school. I could not get in to work the evening of September 11. All passage to NY from NJ was suspended. I was called in the next day during a moment when the George Washington Bridge was opened, but the call wasn't necessary--as soon as I knew I could make it in, I did; I hadn't slept, and felt compelled to get to work to help out any way that I could. I didn't sleep at all for nearly 3 days. We all ran on autopilot at work, it seems. Once in Manhattan on September 12, it was nearly a ghost town--the streets were nearly empty. The only thing that accompanied me most of my way downtown was the shriek of sirens and the stench of burning plastic, which became more choking as I got closer to Ground Zero. I spent hours listening to callers call in to the station and relay tales of their loss, their fear, and the heroism of their fellow man. Men weeping openly, answering machine recordings left by people trapped in the World Trade Center. Our station has both employee and visitor alike sleeping under it's roof that day--a show host took in three stray women from Montreal who could not find their way home, with the borders closed. They slept in the office that night. During my shift, I broadcast a simulcast of our sister station, a news station; all regular programming and commercials were suspended for a week. I work for a talk station; instead of the normal happy banter, we sat shiva with America that week. We all grieved together. The show hosts showed such grace under pressure, such ability to calm people, to lead. I have come to love and respect the people that I work with. On September 11, they, too, became my heroes. Since then, I continue to feel a sense of loss, to miss the Towers: every night I drive on the double helix leading to the Lincoln Tunnel. Even now I look to my left on my way in, looking for the World Trade Center, remembering how beautiful it looked at night. There's a hole there, that I long to see filled. The Empire State Building, once again the tallest building in the NY skyline, stands silent guard over Ground Zero; a symbol of America dressed in it's lights, a beacon of hope. Whenever I see it, I know in my heart that whatever it was that the terrorists were hoping to accomplish, they failed to do: We're still here. We're still strong. We're still free. They were supposed to stay for a week and would have been there on 911 my college classes were starting back up that week and they watch my daughter for me while i was at school. they decided to come back early to watch my daughter for me. on 911 i was at school i had an early morn class and was in the cafe after class was over this girl runs in and yells "A Plane just hit the world trade center" we turned on the Tv and watched i ran to my car and got home as fast as i could. when i turned my car on that was when the second tower was hit i was beginning to get really nervous and anxoius to get home. i just wanted to get home to my daughter who at the time was not even one. if we were under attack i wanted to be with her. Then the Pentagon was hit while i'm still driving. all aircraft was already grounded. but i still saw them in the sky and really began to panic. all unmarked trailer trucks scared me i almost got into lots of accidents trying to get away from them thinking there are bombs in the back. I get home and get my step dad who was sleeping he did not know what was going on. i woke up my daughter from her nap and just held her and cried while watching all this terror unfold. I called my mom because she was in Boston with my grandfather and asked her if hse was ok i told her what happened because they didn't even know they never heard it I told her 2 of the planes faome from Logan and to get out of the city as fast as possible. I"m very grateful in not lossing anyone that day and am more grateful that my step brother has not been shipped out during our War on Terrorism. Today I went to a memorial at our local fire station while my daughter who will be 3 9/17 was at school. We are grateful in our town that noone has been lost. but our hearts and prayers go out to all those who suffered in this tragidy. On 9/13 there is a memorial for a local women who is form the next town frm me who was on one of the flights from Logan airport in Boston. some of her remains were just found and sent home. After 2 years parts of her remains were finally found it was only bone fragments but at least it's something to give the family a tiny bit of Closure. I'm thinking of going to pay my respects I don't know the family but i feel it's part of my duty as an American to pay my respects. I woke up at 5:30 am, took a shower, got dressed, did my hair and make-up, ate a quick breakfast and ran out the door to get to school on time. Throughout the morning I didn't hear any news about what was happening in New York and Washington, D.C. Although around 10:30 am, about two minutes before the bell rang so I could go drive home for lunch, our principal came on the intercom and explained to us that there were two planes that crashed OVER the WTC's. She gave us wrong information, maybe to protect our feelings and keep the school calm because a lot of our parents work in the city. She was letting some kids go down to her office to make phone calls if we were worried. Luckily I didn't know of any relatives or friends that worked up there so as soon as the bell rang I went out to my car and was going to head home. On my walk to my car I heard kids saying that the towers collapsed and a plane hit the Pentagon. I was so confused I had no idea what was going on. On the way home I heard on the radio that there were terrorist attacks on the USA. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The DJ said that two planes hit the WTC's and another one hit the Pentagon. As soon as I got into my front door I ran to the television turned it on and saw chaos. I sat down and just covered my mouth in shock. They played the footage of the planes crashing and later on I saw the two buildings collapse. People were talking on the news screaming that they couldn't find their loved ones. The pain and anger immediately hit me, I started to cry and pray to God that these people find peace. I called my father who works near Jersey City and he told me that he saw everything. I still can not believe the images I see when the pictures or videos come onto the television. It was a nightmare I'll never forget. A couple of my friends who lived up north around Newark lost their aunts, uncles, cousins, parents. I just hope we catch that devil and bring him to justice. My brother had the Living Room TV on-and he almost never has the set on that early. Our Mother was getting ready for work. I went into the Living Room; my brother said, "The World Trade Center's been hit!" I looked at the TV screen-I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Mom and I had visited New Jersey (AND New York as well) in June 2001, only three months earlier. The next word out of my mouth was "Nicole", a young lady whose parents and family I had met on Staten Island (I knew her Uncle and her Cousin). Nicole worked at the WTC. After taking Mom to work, I proceeded to try to contact her family in NY-it took me all of four hours because the lines were so completely jammed. I went to work, feeling terribly for the people who died-THEY were going to work, going home, going in or out of town-you name it...Finally, I was able to reach Nicole's Mom! Nicole was alive! The family was OK-her Dad was stuck in Brooklyn for five hours, but everyone was present and accounted for. Even though Nicole didn't go to work herself, she witnessed the plane hitting the Tower. When we eventually approached the parking lot, a feeling of shock came over us. "Oh my god, there's a hole in the World Trade Center!" the radio host yelled. Then, Brian Williams, the anchorperson on TV, declared that suicide terrorists purposely flew their planes into the buildings. I continued to watch and then saw one of the most disturbing things ever--a plane flying into the other WTC building. "There was a lot of people in that plane," I thought. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Then, I went to my next class, and the situation seemed so bad that my instructor started to let people out of class if they were too upset to stay. I left because I wanted to know the full story and see what was going on. I went back to the TV and continued to watch. I saw footage of dust and smoke surge throughout the city. After all of the accidents happened, people started to evacuate buildings in Chicago, which is where I am close to. When I eventually went home, I started to hear the possible amount of people in the buildings, planes, and right outside the buildings. Was it possible that I knew anyone there? Probably not, but what about the people that did? This accident didn't just involve the deaths of people, but it oppressed the family members and friends of the victims. Then, when George W. I got ready for school as usual but when I turned on the t.v I saw the World Trade Center smoking. My friends, parents, and I all thought that some stupid idiot simply didn't know how to fly a plane. But of course we were wrong. Our musings continued at school also. The chatting that morning was about who kissed who, or who was going to get in a fight. It was about how a plane, or anyhing could crash into a building that tall, and that important. When the first period bell rang and I walked to class I saw my teachers t.v on. " The second tower has been hit...." What the... I think it was then that just about everyone realized that something really serious had just occured. How could TWO planes hit both towers...I mean, once could be an accident, but two? Instead of reading from the book and learning all there is to driving, My Driver's Ed class watched CNN for an hour and a half. We saw the buildings getting hit over and over again on replay, we saw people jump from the 100 feet tall buildings who would rather drop peacefully to their death rather then watch , and feel everyone burning alive. And to everyone's amazement we witnessed the buildings collapsing..live on t.v. The people running, as the cameramen turned their equipment around so that you could see people screaming, running as fast as they ever had while a huge cloud of white smoke chased them. I think the most terrifying thing was hearing the sound of the WTC collapsing. Hearing the ashes and the silt and god knows what traveling through the streets of New York. Like a tornado or a loud wind, I still can't describe the sound. Then the attack on the Pentagon. Even now a year later, I still can't believe what happend that morning. A terrorist attack. A coward called Bin Laden had used our own creations as bombs. Irony is a terrible thing. Thousands of innocent people died for nothing. You never expect anthing like this to happen in your life, especially when your only fifteen. When the bell rang for 2nd period everyone left silently and I walked into my science class. After the bell rang the principal came on the intercom and told all teachers to turn off their t.v's. This really angered me, we were all teenagers, not children, and we were expected to get back to class work as if it was a normal school day? When NYC is covered in white silt and people are dying after we were just attacked? How can you concentrate on anything at a time like this? We NEEDED to watch the t.v, to know what was happening, but we weren't allowed to because...I don't know. The school day continued, I didn't do any work, or even pay attention for that matter, my brain was busy on other terrifying things. When school ended and I got home I found my parents watching the t.v. " America's New War" Okaay...on whom? My family and I talked that night about everything, from what had happened to what was going to happen. What would happen if they drafted? Would I see people enter the army? When something this drastic happens tons of ideas come up. When I tried ot go to sleep that night I just kept thinking about what happened that day, how weird and scary it all was... My husband called me and told me that a plane had hit one of the towers of the WTC. We listened in the office, I frantically searched the internet for information. We heard the news of the second plane hitting the south tower. Work stopped, the phones stopped ringing, and we were begging someone to bring us a TV. Then, we got the news the Pentagon was hit. We were at war. My son is, and was, an active member of the US Navy, and my thoughts went immediately to him and his wife, also in the navy. Will we all ever be together? Will our brave servicepeople go off to war? We got the TV in the office in time to watch the Towers fall. Oh, my, I can still remember the feeling, all those people... We stayed at work, but we did not work, we were stunned and shocked, we were crying and trying to cope. I got home in time to watch WTC7 fall, saw the area where the plane plummeted in Pennsylvania. We were stunned and shocked, for days we cried. I was so angry, at who? at what? I sat outside in the dark, once the airplanes started flying again, and when one was overhead, I ran inside crying, who would be next? September 11th, 2001 is a tragedy. We sould make this day a national holdiay, to reflect on our losses, to find our national spirit, to honor our dead and celebrate our armed forces, who go into harm's way for our national pride. I was attending the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, MS. After my boyfriend dropped me off at the Center for Community Health, I started working at my research assistant job like every other day. However, cnn.com was terribly slow. Soon we found out what was going on. I had a meeting with a school official that day, and I remember thinking how insignificant my problems were after this tragic event. In the school official's office, I ran into the a friend of mine who happened to be engaged to a man who lived just down the street from the WTC, and I wondered anxiously as she tried to get in contact with Reggie. It was one of the most tragic days I will ever remember. My heart went out to all of the people. I will also never forget how the people of Hattiesburg came together. I was teaching my class of second graders and we had the radio on and heard the shocking news about the towers. The first grade teacher turned on her T.V. and then we saw the whole thing in action. I remember standing there in aw. At first it did not seem real but when it sank in to my mind I started to cry. We were now at war a war fighting for or freedom against people like that. I had never expericened anything like this before. A couple of days later I found out that a good friend of mine had lost her husband in the boming. I new this was a big thing but now it hit close to home! It has been a year now and life has moved on. But I don't think any one will never be the same. I know that my life has changed. I pray evryday for my friend and her family and for all the people who lost there lives in this awfull happening. God bless us all.
