Tell us your story: I was awaken by my mom the morning of september 11 at around 6 am and she told me there was no school today because two planes crashed into the towers. The reason we found out at 6am is because the time difference over seas. I lived on an airforce base so when this happened the base was shutdown noone could get on the base and no one could leave it. When my mom told me the news I was shocked i did not think something like this would ever happen like this. When i found out it put me in a whole new perspective and made me think that things like this could happen again. It was a pretty scary time for me and my family I hope America never has to expierience this event ever again. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at work and on the busiest day of my week. I work in a clinic for the developmentally disabled. I remember hearing people gather outside the office, in which I was meeting with a client, in the hall talking quiety about something and wondering what had happened. When the session was over I went out and asked what was going on and someone pointed to a television that a coworker had run home to get. On it was a scene I never thought to see in reality, only in the movies. A plane was crashing into the World Trade Tower and people were saying "no, not, again, not another one." I had to leave and begin another session. I had to put aside what I had seen and work with the person who had come to me for help. I remember thinking what is going on? What had happened? At the end of that session I went back to the television to see the second tower come down. I didn't realize that I was seeing the second tower, I thought that it was a replay of the first one. When I realized what I was seeing I was horrified and kept thinking, "all those people, all those people who were still in there and the people helping." I stood there with tears running down my face with about five or six other people watching this happen. I don't even remember what they were saying on the television. I do know that we didn't speak, we couldn't, what could we say to each other about what we had seen. I had to meet with another client then. I spent the remainder of my work day going between clients and the television trying to make sense of what had happened and of all the statements that were being said by the news people, the pentagon was blown up, the white house was gone. At some point in that morning we heard that a coworker had a daughter that worked in one of the towers and that he was frantic to hear from her. I remember thinking what more? If I go back and look at that television what are they going to tell me next? My next thoughts were of my children and my life partner. I wanted to be with them to tell him that I loved him and that I loved my children. And I wondered how I could explain this to my son, he's only 10. How do I explain anger so far removed from him but yet strikes out at him for things he doesn't even know about or understand. The older children are horrified and stay glued to the television until we force them to go to bed. They plead with us to stay home the next day so they can watch CNN and we say no and send them to school. One month later October 11...All through the news they are talking about the anniversary of the terrorist attacks. It is my son's 11th birthday and I want to turn off the television and the radio and let him have his day..let him be 11 and not know about this kind of anger and hatred. I have tried my best to help him to understand but he has never experienced this first hand and can't understand how people can hurt each other this way. His questions asking me about God and how their religion leads them to make these kinds of choices I can't answer but I try to help him. I can't answer his questions because I don't understand myself. I have to tell him I don't understand and try to explain to him about extremists but he still doesn't understand why people want and then feel good about hurting each other this way. He saw the news footage of the people celebrating this event. I feel angry because this has cheated him out of part of his childhood and stolen from him some of his innocence. I hope that the other children can get past their view of what has happened and the anger they have. They don't want to talk about it anymore and they don't want to watch it on television any more. September 11 one year later...we, as a nation, still don't have any resolution and my son and I still don't understand. He is older now and has discussed this many times with different people and has come to the conclusion that terrorists don't like other people and likened them to historical figures like Stalin and Hitler that he has only begun to learn about. I am still angry because he has had to learn about this from something that happened here and within his life and I wonder how this will have changed him and his outlook on life. The other children remark on the day as an anniversary and go on with their lives, they have homework to complete, a paper to write and a speech to prepare. Someone has to feed the dog and the cats and turn off the lights in the fish tanks. Life goes on, but at what cost to our children? I knew no one in the Pentagon nor the Twin Towers, but when I saw the people in the buildings & then saw them coming down I just crumpled to my seat and cried. Sunday night, September 9, 2001, at midnight, my sister was to report to the hospital to have her labor induced. The hospital was unwelcoming that late at night. The only souls who seemed to inhabit the building were emergency room patients with sour faces because the had been waiting so long. I quickly changed my position on the hospital's feelings when we entered the third floor baby ward. The nursing staff signed in my sister, Sarah, filled out the mile long paper work, asked her seemingly endless questions and finally gave her medication to soften her cervix and strengthen her contractions. I watched the clock's hands make their revolutions around the white circle in their taunting, slow manner. I asked myself over and over again, "Could this possibly be the longest night on Earth?" The next day was not much better. My sister had been awake all night and was now becoming grumpy. Just to pass time, her fiancee and I began to joke about the way she was acting. Nurses and doctors were in and out periodically. Every time they broght the same heart breaking news that it was not time yet. The day went by much the same as the previous night- uneventful and boring. My mom could tell my impatience was growing so we returned home to get some sleep. The next day we were to return to the hospital at six o'clock in the morning. The snooze button was worn down by our repetitive pushing (being as tired as we were). My sister called the house, I ran to answer it, frantic, yet hopeful. The news was a little different than we expected. She ordered, "Turn on the T.V!" We did as she said and were shocked to find a plane had hit the World Trade Center Tower One. We continued to stay glued to the television set like a deer caught in the headlight's of a car. The shock continued to rise as the reports were read. First, that the second tower was hit, then the Pentagon. With all of this going on we hurriedly dressed and went to the hospital. Upon our arrival we were updated with the news that she was dialated enough to have her water broken. This was the moment I had been waiting to arrive for the last nine months. My sister was about to be a mother. My mom was about be a grandmother. Most importantly, I was about to be someone's aunt! Six hours later, Sarah was complaining about the pressure. The nurse prepared to make a normal check. When she began, she said, "Sarah you can begin pushing." I was overcome with excitment! Fifteen minutes later I heard the screaming of a newly born life, the most wonderful sound I had ever heard. I cried at the look on my sister's face. Sevien, my nephew, was finally here. While the rest of America was mourning, my family celebrated. On a day when many shed tears of sorrow, I cried for joy. My nephew was born on one of the most memorable days in history- September 11, 2001. When I answered I never could have imagined the news I would soon hear. My mom had that frantic sound in her voice, and I thought someone in the family had been hurt; It kind of was my family. She told me to turn on the T.V., and that the Twin Towers had been hit! Then she said that there was talk of war, and that she had heard we should fill our cars up with gas due to a possible shortage. I just couldn't believe all this news rushing at me. I mean, this was America we were talking about! I didn't understand why anybody would want to attack America because we allow people the freedom to worship and believe how ever they want. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001, I went into work about 8:30 AM and changed into my uniform as I usually do. Arlington House, where I work, sits within Arlingon National Cemetery on a hill overlooking DC, the Potomac River, and the Pentagon. About 9:25 AM I stepped out of the Old Administration Building to walk over and open the house for visitors at 9:30 AM when Jan, the site gardener, came speeding up into the parking lot in the white Maintenance pickup truck. He jumped out and said in horror that two planes had hit the World Trade Center in New York City. My first inclination was that it must have been some sort of accident. A bit shaken but having no concept of the gravity of the situation, I continued over to the house where my friend and fellow ranger Linda and I opened the doors and set up the ribbons which direct traffic in the house. I took my assigned position on the second floor, standing at the head of the stairs. A few visitors came in immediately after we opened. A few minutes later, I heard and felt a loud ?Boom!? that seemed very close. Shortly thereafter Linda called upstairs and said, "Mark, I need you down here." I went downstairs and she asked what we should do about the Museum building, which the curatorial staff had not opened as usual that morning. Looking out the front doors of the house, I could see smoke billowing up through the trees. As I moved to get a better look Linda said, "They got the Pentagon." I stepped out in front of the house and saw a large black cloud going up against the blue sky. About that time, my supervisor, Frank, came over to the house and instructed us to close up the house. We escorted the few visitors out of the house and, along with Malcolm, the Facility Manager, and Jan, began a walk-through of the site. I went with Frank and we searched the house and the bathroom buildings (checking inside trashcans, under toilets, etc), looking for anything suspicious. Fortunately, we didn't find anything. I really don't know what we would have done had we found anything. At one point, I heard another ?Boom!? and thought that the Pentagon had been hit again. I would learn later that the sound was just the sonic boom of some of our fighter planes taking off (from Langley, I presume). Malcolm had a small radio in his pocket and was tuned to the news reports. While we were checking the buildings and the grounds we heard a radio report that an "unidentified aircraft" was in route to D.C. It was at that point that I began to wonder about our safety. I didn?t know what to expect and remember thinking ?Could the Cemetery be a target?? Fortunately, nothing came of the report immediately. I don't know whether the report turned out to be false information or whether that unidentified aircraft turned out to be the one that crashed in Pennsylvania or what. After we had checked the buildings and grounds, we went back to the office building and watched some news reports. I called my mom to tell her I was okay and she was very relieved. Several of us gathered around a small TV in Malcolm?s office. All of us were dealing with the situation in our own ways. Karen, the historian, was crying. Keena, one of our co-workers who was off that day called to make sure everyone was okay. Linda was probably the calmest of everyone. I was just shocked with the whole scene both in N.Y.C. and at the Pentagon. The whole thing was very nerve-racking. Being that close to D.C. and not knowing what was going to happen next, I didn't know whether we were in imminent danger or not. Fortunately for me, I missed the bus that morning, so I had driven in rather than taking the Metro. (The idea of taking Metro was a bit unsettling at a time when we weren't certain that the attacks on the public were over.) I called my friend Melissa, who works in Rosslyn but lives in D.C. and does not have a car to see if she wanted me to pick her up and take her out to my house in Chantilly. She was grateful for the offer. The traffic was pretty bad right outside of the city as everyone was leaving work and trying to get home. The road was jam packed with cars and there were men and women in uniform walking along the road, having left the Pentagon. It took me about 20 minutes to drive the 2-3 miles over to Rosslyn where I picked up Melissa and one of her co-workers, Lois. We dropped Lois off at her home and then headed for Chantilly. As we were nearing Vienna, we got in touch with another friend, Scott, who was on the Metro, and convinced him to meet us at the Vienna Metro station and come out to Chantilly rather than take the Metro through the Pentagon station towards his home in Alexandria. We picked Scott up and I looked around for anyone else I knew in case they needed a ride home. I offered a ride to two of the people whom I recognized from my bus. They were grateful for the offer as the buses weren't running at that time. We crammed five people into my car and went out to Chantilly. We spent most of the rest of the day just watching the news and the replays of the towers falling in New York. My mom made us some dinner. After most of the bridges into DC had been reopened for inbound traffic, Melissa and I went back to her apartment to collect some of her stuff so that she could stay out at my house. The city was very quiet. There were a lot of cops, and Military Policemen (part of the D.C. National Guard was called up) and the streets around the White House and Capitol were closed off. We tried to get a late edition Washington Post--stopping at probably a half a dozen places during the search-- but were unsuccessful. They were all sold out. On the way back home, we drove by the Pentagon. There was a thick smoky haze, illuminated by the emergency/construction lights which had been erected around the still-burning building. The burning smell was strong. I didn?t go to bed that night until about 1:30 AM as I was glued to the TV, waiting for whatever news came out. It would be a familiar pattern for the next few days. For weeks afterwards, I had some trouble handling my emotions. I felt terrible sadness, but also tremendous pride. Simply the sight of an American flag strung up along the highway or a patriotic song on the radio was enough to make me well up with tears. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001 my wife and I were flying from Detroit Michigan to Las Vegas Nevada for Vacation and to purchase property in Laughlin Nevada. We were near Albuquerque, New Mexico at approximately 33,000 feet when the pilot made the announcement that we were being deverted to the nearest airport by the airlines. A few minutes later the pilot came back with another statement. He said, "I assure you there is nothing wrong with the aircraft we have just been instructed to land at the nearest airport which will be Albuquerque. There will be more information when we land. I looked at my wife and said "There is probably a terrorist on board and they want to get the aircraft on the ground". When we landed and departed the aircraft we could hear the commotion in the terminal. The Pilot stopped us and explained that an aircraft had crashed into the World Trade Center. He could not give more information than he did in flight because of the possibility of a potential terrorist taking this as an opportunity to take another aircraft. The second aircraft crashed into the other tower shortly after we landed. We called our children to let them know that we were safe. They were very concerned and worried. It was a great relieve to know we were safe. We all stood around the TV's and watched in horror, the attacks on America. Two days later we rented a car a drove to Las Vegas with a newly wed couple from London, Ont. and a gentleman from Lima, Ohio. My father-in-law called to tell me to put on the TV & see a plane World Trade Center was on fire. I could not believe him! Then I turned on my TV & was happening. Reports said a plane ripped into one of the Twin Towers. I couldn't believe my eyes. It was so horrific. I saw the other plane hit the second building & I prayed to God everyone would be okay. Then the people interviewed heard a rumbling & crumbling & before our eyes the mighty Twin Towers collasped like my son's Lego blocks but with a blast of snooty smoky clouds. OH, how I cried! You see the mass of humanity escaping the inferno by walking as if a fog or bad dream on the Brooklyn Bridge. What fiends could have done this to us! Then, you heard how Flight 93 crashed & how the Pentagon was hit with a plane also. You see the wreckage & could only imagine how the relatives of the people who were in those structures felt. September 11th my phone kept waking me from my sleep. After answering, I was brought to realization by an employee, I had no idea of the attacks on America. It was two days before I ever found my friends were well in NY and had been staying two blocks from the WTC towers when attacked. I thank god every night. Tell us your story: In the mourning before the attacks had happened ,I was at football practice.Then after we were let out of athletics I was late going to spanish.When I got there I saw everyboby watching the t.v. I thought wew were going to be watching a movie but as it turns out everybody was watching aftermath of the first plane crashing into the first tower.I asked what was going on and I heard that the world trade centers were attacked by a hijacked plane that crashed directly into it the first tower.I didn't know what the world trade centers were so I was a little confused about everything.The whole class period we sat there shocked at everything that had happened.then the bell rang so we got up and went to our next period class. In the hallway everone I knew was asking questions and talking about what was going on.During third period our teacher asked if we had any questions about the attacks.Question after question were being asked while we were still watching CNN covering the story. Then all the sudden the camera shifted suddenly to a plane flying straight for the other tower, then BOOM a giant explosion as the plane hit the other tower. Everyone just stared in awe at the horrible site.after a few questions were answered we kept on watching as the wo towers stood there burnig with a giant hole in them.Many minutes past as we watched the towers the all the sudden the first tower collapsed within itself then the second tower looked as it had imploded fell staight to the ground.Then before I even understood what the world trade centers were, they were gone.All that was left was ia gaint pile of ruble and ash eveerywhere on the streets of New York. Tell us your story: I was in my office, sometime after 9:15, but before 9:30, working on my computer, when a colleague came down the hall announcing to one and all that his wife had just called him to tell him that two planes had just hit the WTC. At 9:30, the normal morning break time, I went into the office of another colleague who had a radio on. We were talking about the attacks when it was announced that a plane had hit the Pentagon, and shortly afterwards that a plane had gone down in Pennsylvania. I was in such shock that I really didn't feel much of anything then. Shortly afterwards I told my boss that I was taking vacation time (I had a LOT of time accrued) and going home to watch the news. The company didn't shut down as a lot of end of the quarter projects were bearing down toward shipment stage. As I was driving home, I heard the report that the South Tower had fallen. After getting home I turned on the TV and was watching when the North Tower fell. Fortunately, I had no friends or relatives that were anywhere near N.Y. that day. All day, I watched the reports in numbness, and really felt no emotion until a number of members of Congress gathered on the steps of the Capitol that night near dusk and sang, I believe it was, God Bless America, truly one of the more moving experiences of my life. It was early in the day and I'm working on a Good Citizen project for my social studies class. We turn on the t.v and all of a sudden we see a plane crash right into the World Trade Centers. We were all in skock when we then hered that America was under Attack! some of us broke down in tears because some didnt know what else to do. Well we still had school so we went on with our day. My next class was drama and all the kids there cryed. Then our securaty guard came to our class to give a slip to one of the kids. Well guess wht that kid was me.It was a slip saying i was going home.My dad came to pick me and my little brothers from school because he knew what had happened. As we got home we turned on the news and both trade centers were gone. It was so horrible. I even remember what i was doing right then I was finishing my Good citizen project when i thought how can someone do that. I started to cry when the news said that another plane has crashed into the Pentagon. Then another in a field in Pennsylvania. I thought right from then this day couldnt be any worse. I had gotten her started for the morning with her studies and went into by bedroom for my weekly, some times more often, phone visit with my sister. We were talking while I also had the television set turned to Channel 12 while watching Katie Couric, a favorite of mine. All of a sudden a news report came on and started showing the World Trade Center and a picture of an airplane crashing into it. IT was appx. 9am by my watch. I told my sister to turn it on Channel 12 and she said what is it. I said you are not going to believe it. We both just held the phone and cried while we saw and watched lives and our country being destroyed. To say I was in shock, does not even begin to describe it. My husband at the time was working at USAIWAYS and was stationed out of Charlotte, NC. I told my sister to let me go call him and I would call her back. I went straight to my daughter and told her what happened and said I cannot believe it and I was crying so hard. She said Mom what is wrong? She could not really grasp what had happened, so I said it is awful honey, it is awful. She went back to her studies and I proceeded to call my husband at work, who by that time, had already heard the news of course. But we were not sure then if any USAIRWAY planes were involved. OF course he was in shock also. I then hung up the phone and called my sister back. She was still just in total shock, so I think we stayed on the phone for hours just talking and looking and not believing what we were seeing. I have always been proud to be an American and that day in history made me even prouder. I mourn the loss of lives and the senseless cowardly way the terrorists took them. But, we will stand strong as always and we will not be defeated. I saw, GOD BLESS AMERICA AND GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS. BE WITH THE FAMILIES OF LOST LOVE ONES AND LET THEM KNOW WE LOVE THEM AND WE FEEL THEIR PAIN AND WE ARE ALL SO PROUD OF EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM. THEY ARE ALL TRUE HEROES IN MY BOOK. I had just dropped my husband off at work and was on my way to go shopping at the mall.
