Tell us your story: My husband and I and our 5 and 6 year old were on a US Air flight out of Logan Airport headed to Orlando for a family vacation. Upon arriving at Orlando the pilot of our plane came to the front and announced that there had been a major tradgedy and to please depart the plane as quickly as possible and get to where you are going as quickly as possible. With this, my husband and I and the rest of the people aboard looked in horror at each other wondering what had happened. We quickly learned that the United and American planes had crashed into the World Trade Centers. My heart felt sadness for the innocent people and their families that were aboard these planes. We tried to make our family trip a good one for the sake of the children, but it was difficult because we were always thinking of how many peoples lives were affected by this tradgedy. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a college student who in 2001, only had classes on Monday, Wednesday's and Friday's. So on Tuesday, the 11th, I was sleeping in. I woke up to the sound of the phone ringing. When I answered, I remember looking at the clock and noting that it was 9:00am central time. I picked up the phone and it was a representative from the Army trying to get me to join. After I politely declined, I decided to turn on the TV to watch Regis and Kelly. What I saw instead when I turned on that TV was the terrifying imnages of the terrorist attacks. I had no clue what was going on until I read the captions under the pictures. They said that it was an attack on NY and DC. I immediatly picked up the phone to call my mom who was at work in St. Louis. The phone never rang on either end. She was on the line as I picked it up. She was trying to call me exactly when I called her. We talked about what had happened before hanging up. I settled in front of the TV in the living room to watch the coverage. I saw the people waving from the remaining tower (the first tower had already collapsed). I remember praying that they'd make it out as I went to get a drink of water. By the time I came back to the TV, the second tower had collapsed. The reporter then mentioned that there were as many as 11 planes still up in the air and unaccounted for. I was terrified as I lived very close to a large city. I was scared that St. Louis would be next. My mom came home soon there after and we watched more of the coverage. Finally, needing to get out for awhile, I went for a drive. As I drove down a busy street, I noticed that someone had parked their truck on the side of the road and had a large American Flag hanging out the back. That's when it first struck me that this day would be one that I would never forget. I haven't forgotten it. I pray for the victims and the country all the time. I have a flag hanging on the wall of my room. I wear shirts with American Flag's on it at least once a week. I am so proud and so thankful to be an American. God Bless this wonderful country. Tell us your story: The first report of a plane hitting the North Tower came as I was getting a ride to work in Arlington, VA, with my Dad in his old Olds Delta 88. When the report first came, I remember my Dad said that it was "some bloody terrorist" who had done it. My Dad was born and raised in Manhattan (in NYC) and has what is in my opinion, a typical New Yorker attitude. He always goes right to blaming someone or something and it is by habit, that I always disagree with him. So it was that I disagreed with him this morning and said that "how do you know it isn't simply an accident?" I don't remember where I was when I heard the second plane hit but by then, it was obvious that I was wrong. I sat and watched the TVs for a bit before deciding to go downstairs to Starbucks and get my coffee. On my way to the elevator, the plane hit the Pentagon. I work for a Federal agency--located about 1 1/2 miles from the Pentagon so then I began to worry that "they" could target any Government agency. However, I still went for coffee as the entire thing held a surreal quality for me and I for some crazy reason assumed that they would simply put the fires out and rescue people from the top of the WTC's with helicopters. The velocity of the entire situation had not sunk in yet. Once back in the office, we realized we could see the smoke pouring out of the Pentagon from our corner office window. My office is on the top, 12th floor. We went back to watching TV and, still believing that the fire would be extinguished and folks rescured, I left the room with the TV. A short time later, I heard people yelling "Oh my God, it fell down," and racing back in to the room in time to see the dust cloud engulf lower Manhattan and the tower gone. Thinking about the event today, a year later, still gives me an empty, depressed feeling and makes me want to cry. I feel very connected to New York, having spent every Christmas there at my grandparents on East 25th Street, and many trips in the summer, and visiting my cousins who live on Staten Island near the ferry. I've been up in the towers about 4 times over the years. The last was 4 years ago when I took my then 7 year old son up in them for the view. I was just looking through my momento box where I keep ticket stubs and various items and found my ticket for the WTC observation deck. I did not even know I had it until the other day when I saw it there. Even though I live in closer proximity to the Pentagon than the WTC's, I feel more connected and more heavy hearted when I think of the WTC's. I guess because of the enormity and the realization that these buildings that have stood there most of my life, that I've visited, are actually gone. That people had to make the unthinkable decision to burn alive or jump 110 stories, when I'm afraid of heights and I'm sure many of them were too. The fact that the buildings pulverized the bodies and there was almost nothing to find. The Pentagon was a trajedy as well, of course. I had been in NYC for three summers at Columbia U. On July 11, 2001, I finally got to go to the Twin Towers. I was so impressed by the friendly people who helped us find our way around. They were not the New Yorkers people said we would find. I worried about them. The other image that Kansas Citians faced was the blocklong gas lines that tangled the rush hour traffic as fear spread. Tell us your story: My brother called from work on September 11, 2001, to tell me to turn on the news, that a plane had hit one of the towers of the World Trade Center. I was scheduled to work later that day and was watching my nephew, Harrison, who was just 2 years old at the time. My mom was home with me, too. It was as beautiful a day here in Pittsburgh as it was in New York, and I kept thinking how shocking it was. What was wrong with the plane? How could it crash into a building? Why not the river or ocean where it would still be tragic, but the loss of life would be so much less? As we were watching, we saw the second plane hit the towers. We sat for minutes in shocking disbelief before we realized it had to be an attack. The news was sketchy. Lots of information was coming in from a variety of sources. We saw people looking in awe at what had happened. We saw a man sitting underneath the towers and actually record the second plane hitting. We saw people falling from the buildings to the ground below. We saw rescuers. We saw countrymen. We saw patriots. We saw heroes - right there in New York, in our own country. We watched incredible footage, incredible history unfold before us. It was not like watching man step on the moon, it wasn't like watching Viet Nam or the Gulf War. It wasn't like Somalia. It was right here, right in front of us. My nephew was playing on the floor in the den while we were watching. I was glad to have him near. He didn't know anything about what was going on. He was putting curlers in his hair. I was taking pictures of him. As I watched, I kept thinking one thing. I wasn't afraid or unsure. I was angry. Who thought they had a right to come into MY country and do this to MY people? Moments later, the news cut away to Washington, D.C. The Pentagon had been attacked. We were listening to a woman, I can't remember her name, talking from her cell phone. She had see the plane hit. She was on the highway that turns into the Pentagon grounds. The scenes there were as unbelievable as the scenes from New York. We heard a loud plane go overhead travelling southeast. Within minutes there was news from home that a plane had crashed in Somerset County, just 60 or so miles from Pittsburgh. We learned that downtown Pittsburgh was being evacuated. I couldn't understand why. We live in America. We are strong and safe. What was going on? All day long, on that beautiful late summer day, we sat inside watching television, not wanting to pull ourselves away. As the day progressed, we learned a lot. We learned who our attackers were - how they hate. We learned that in the face of this great tragedy, America was still here. We learned that in crisis, our country rallied, quickly and as one, to protect us, to keep our freedom going. To this day I am struck by one thing - no one panicked. People reacted, but there were no riots or looting or people attacking each other. Instead, there was comforting, aiding, sharing. People reached out, consoled one another, assured each other. This was more awe inspiring than the level of tragedy of these events. In the days that followed, we learned one more important thing. We learned that heroes come in all forms in those who serve us daily as firefighters, medical personnel, law enforcement, in those who make and enforce our laws, in those who defend us, in those who touch our lives in any way. In the year that has followed, we've been dedicated to upkeeping our patriotism and to being aware of our surroundings. We are discovering new things about ourselves as a nation and what we believe. We are taking positive, strenuous steps to ensure freedom at home and abroad. We are still here. America is still strong. And I am still angry. I want the cowards who participated, planned, funded or otherwise encouraged these attacks to know we will not go quietly. I have never been afraid to say, act or be an American. I will not let anyone intimidate me or try to make me ashamed of my country. America is not always the perfect country, but she is still the best country on earth. I LOVE HER! I have news for Osama bin Laden and his followers - don't come my way. I won't put up with you. I, and millions of my countrymen, won't let you do this again! In every other way, life here is pretty much normal. My nephew is now 3. But we will not forget what happened - not ever!! This day, September 11, 2002, has been a very emotional day. I am more proud of my country and it's citizens than ever. I am honored by the men and women who gave their lives one year ago. Their memories will be with etched in every one of us forever. It was fitting to have the Gettysburg Address read at the Ground Zero ceremony as it was for President Bush to rally the Pentagon festivities and for Appalachian Spring to be played in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. All of these were proper tributess to mark the day. My hope is that this day, Patriot Day, stays with us always as a day as important as the Fourth of July. I want the families of those who died to know we are with them and cherish them. We are all survivors, we will overcome our enemies, and we will endure. When I got to work, we turned the TV on and the I watched as the second plane flew in and then the announcement of the Pentagon being hit and the another announcement of another plane crashing in some field. I saw all these Firefighters going into the building and I remember telling my TV set "You need to get out, the towers are going to come down and soon as the gas explodes." Why did those FF's even go into the buildings. How could they have not relize it was coming down. I am sadden by the events of 911, but will be even more sadder when the war developes with Iraq. I switched on the radio in the bathroom to listen to NPR and the presenter made the announcement that Alan Greenspan had been taken to a secure location and that the financial markets had been suspended. I was bewildered, but I could tell from the tone in his voice that something serious had happened, although I had no inkling what. I headed back into my bedroom to switch on the TV, as getting information from the radio seemed to take too long. The first image I saw was a plane hitting the WTC as they were looping the same videotape footage over and over again. I just stood there in shock trying to take in all the information from the past few hours, compressed into seconds - it was overwhelming. They said that the Pentagon had been also been hit and that another airplane was unaccounted for. I flipped through the other channels only to see that the majority of them were covering the same story. Due to the time zone difference between East and West coast, the events had already taken place but there was still a lot of confusion. I decided to call my girlfriend to see if she had heard the news, which was pretty na?ve when I look back. At that time, the whole world was witnessing the carnage except maybe people still asleep in Hawai'i. My next instinct was to call my family back in England to tell them that I was okay. I was silly in a way since I was nowhere near the attacks on the East coast, but at the same time I found it comforting to speak to them. Unlike me they had watched the events unfold as they happened, and in a way I was grateful that I didn't have to go through the anxiety of what was going to happen next. I finished getting ready and headed into work, as I wanted to be around people. As I arrived downtown I saw the Transamerica building sealed off by police fearing a terrorist attack there. When I arrived at my office it was nearly empty and a manager there told me that in lieu of events everyone was allowed to go home. I decided then to go to my girlfriends apartment, where we sat watching CNN for the rest of the day trying to make sense of it all. Tell us your story: I was at my children's school in the conference room helping out with the PTA fund raiser, when several office personel ran in and yell turn on the TV, a plane hit one of the Twin Towers in NY!!! We all seemed frozen as we watched the news unfold. As several parents were also there helping with the fund raiser, the prinicpal asked our input on how do we tell the children? By this time the other tower had been hit as well as Washington. I knew my kids were safe at this point and worried more about my husband who was working at the Orlando Int'l Airport with FBI clearance. I called him to find out that he was in an closed door meeting, they were trying to figure what they should do next. I will also tell you that Sept 11, 2001, was our 14th wedding annv. Needless to say, all dinner plans were cancelled. Less than 5 mins after our first phone call, I received a call from my husband to inform me that there has been a bomb threat at the airport and he just didn't want me to see it on the news first. At this point we started to have parents arriving to take thier children home from school early. I spent the next 2 hours helping release about 500 kids out of 900. I was very proud of our parents, they were calm and orderly. Once the day was over I was able to go home with my children 4 & 7, I had to explain about the day as well as explain daddy will be working late. Once I got them settled, it was my turn to fall apart!!! I went in the shower so my children could not hear me and cried uncontrollably, not only for my husband, whom I was scared for, but for the people that were hurt or died and thier families. Once I got myself together I sat with my children as we prayed to keep daddy safe as well as the families of the ones lost. I got my children to bed and just watched tv as I waited for my husband to come home safe. He did arrive home safe, about 2am the next day, but was on call. Needless to say we did not get much sleep that night like most people in America. We just layed in bed, with our boys beside us, and clung to each other, scared to let go. I will never look at life or my family the same again, as well as my husband and I decided then to change the day we celebrate our anniversary. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My name is Patricia M. Cubas. I was exiting a southbound #6 train at the City Hall/Brooklyn Bridge subway station. I smelled smoke while aboard the train & had a very eerie feeling as the train pulled in. The S/B #6 train always slows down before pulling into that station but that morning I knew something was different. The smell of smoke was more intense and people were in a panic running towards the trains. I went into panic mode myself. As I exited the stairwell on Frankfort Street I walked into total hysteria. A man from my job was using a Bull horn annoucing that the WTC had just been attacked by terrorist & for everyone to leave the lower Manhattan area. I walked around the newspaper stand and I saw the gaping holes in both towers. I saw people walking as fast as they could over the Brooklyn Bridge. I saw a woman who's skin was charred in front of City Hall park. I saw people jumping from the building. My first response was my husband is in that building. He was my ex-husband but I knew he was there. He was a NYC Firemen. His name was Peter Alexander Bielfeld. He had just left my apartment the morning before, September 10th, 2001. He wanted me to go with him to the rededication of his firehouse on Prospect Avenue. Ladder 42 Engine 73. His firehouse was closed for about a year & a half for renovations. I just watched in total desperation as the black smoke billowed from the higher floors. I felt like I was in a semi-conscious state. The whole thing was surreal. Peter & I had been divorced for years but were never out of each others lives. We would date each other, argue with each other break up for a short while and go back with each other. It's just how we were together. We both had different relationships. No one that seemed to be worthy of either one of us. He even had a daughter with an ex-girlfriend. That was a very difficult time in his life. I can't take back that horrible day. If I could I would remove it from history. I will love Peter up until I take my very last breath. I know so many people that lost loved ones. Death is a part of life as well as tragedies but when it affects you personally, it feels so overwhelming. On September 11, I was in the US Air Force in a class that prepares military members for the transition back to civilain life. As I walked into class, the television was on. I seen smoke coming off of one of the Twin Towers. We all thought a small plane had accidentally crashed into the tower. Then, we watched as the second plane came and hit the second tower, that was when we knew for sure that was no accident. As soon as that happened, the teacher, who was a civilian, informed us that the base was immediately closing to civilians and that we were all to report immediately to our duty stations. (We were all dressed in civilian clothes, which was a requirement for the class.) That was when things got hectic. I went straight to my duty station, in my skirt and high heels and when I walked in, everyone was glued to the TV. We had to stay there for a few hours. We were all so much in shock. It didn't really hit us until all the work phones and personal cell phones started ringing like crazy. Our families and friends calling to make sure we were ok, and to tell us they were ok, and also to tell us of people that may not be ok. To tell us of family and friends that may have been in the towers. I know for at least two weeks my husband and I were glued to the television. Tears running from our eyes every so often. It was just such a sad sad time. It was so hard to see all of the people who were looking for their loved ones. I remember flying to visit my family soon after and just uncontrolably crying on the plane, just imagining how scary and horrible it must have been for all of those innocent people, and how unbelievably brave all of those men and women were on the planes that tried to stop those horrible men! Then sooo many people lost loved ones, some lost more than one. I also remember going to eat at a restaurant with my co-worker in our uniforms. A man came over and thanked us for all that we sacrifice for our country and he bought our dinner. That really touched us. My son's were watching Barney at the time, and I had to switch the station, the 1st plane had just hit, and they were discussing what had happened, in total disbelief, and then myself an I'm sure millions of other Americans watched in horror as the 2nd plane hit. While trying to figure out who, what, where & why that happened, they first reported a bomb had gone off at the Pentagon, then they realized what happened there, then the reports came in about the plane in PA. I left New York almost 30 years ago to live in Michigan. Going home was always a treat, being born and raised there. We always called ourselves TOURISTS WHO KNEW THEIR WAY AROUND. I will always have my favorites spots that I visit, but remembering the World Trade Center will always be there. What a beautiful place it was. When you got off the E train, the last stop, (WTC), what a sight for soar eyes. That was the stop also to go the South Seaport. This will always be in our minds and our hearts, but we are Americans and we are strong. No one will ever take that from us. It seems to me that everyone wants to be here for the freedom. All of a sudden James McAndrews came in yelling, "Hey everybody guess what! My sister is in New York and she saw the plane crash into the twin towers!" Of course know one knew what he was talking about, so we continued our work. Later on when our teacher got in from bus duty she had a class talk about it. I was thinking at the time, "Why is everybody making such a big deal out of a couple of buildings." Then I realized how many people died and what the Afganistanians did to our country. I realized the terror of what happened. Then the next night I couldn't sleep. In that next month all we did was talk with the class, grade, and school. In a way Im a tad bit happy they did that because they brought our country claoser togther as more of a nation. Now everone is caring more for people and families are talking with eachother. Tell us your story: On the morning of Sept 11th 2001, a co-worker in my office heard that an airplane hit one of the towers at the World Trade Center. We all went to the room where the TV showed us one tower on fire and smoking. I know going through my mind was: How could an airplane NOT miss that tower! Of course, not long after the second plane hit the other tower and there was no denying we were under attack. The whole day was surreal ... the only times the phone rang at our office was when hospitals were calling to rent critical care equipment from our company. Allegiance Respiratory Care. They thought there would be a lot of injured people inundating their hospitals. Unfortunately, they were wrong, too few people came out of the towers alive. I think when the plane hit the Pentagon is when I really began to fear what was happening, and then there were unconfirmed reports of a plane down in Western PA. You had to wonder "what's next"? Tell us your story: I had just dropped off my 3 kids at school and was listening to the radio in my kitchen when the DJ mentioned that a plane had struck the World Trade Center. I yelled to my husband to turn the T.V. on because I was sure it would be on the news, and as we both sat on the couch watching (our first thought was, wow, how could that poor guy flying the plane not see the Trade Center), then right before our eyes the second plane hit and I looked at my husband for some sort of explanation, and he said "oh, that was just debris from the other plane hitting the seond building". We finally realized that it was a second plane that hit, not debris and we both freaked. I was devastated. I couldn't move from the couch. I knew then that those buildings would come down, there was way too much damage to repair. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: About a month after the attack, I began keeping a journal. Following is the entry for September 11th. On Tuesday, September 11, 2001, the World Trade Center in New York City was attacked by terrorists. More than a month later, the wreckage, which the rescue workers referred to as ?The Pile?, was still burning! The buildings withstood the impact of two commercial airplanes, but the fire was so intense (2000 degrees) it melted the steel structure, which caused the buildings to implode. Over 3,000 people from 80 nations perished. Everyday since then, I have replayed in my mind moments of that day over-and-over again. I believe the reason I am still replaying it is that I don't ever want to forget that day. I don't want anyone to ever forget how terrorizing and devastating this attack was for thousands of people and the intensity of emotions, disbelief and sorrow that were felt. I think it's important to record my personal impressions of that fateful day and I am hoping that by writing this essay, I will be able to "turn off" the videotape in my mind. A vicious attack was perpetrated on American soil. More people died on 9/11/01 than any other single day in American history. More people died this day than at Pearl Harbor, more than one year during the Vietnam War. It is too much to comprehend. Tuesday, September 11th: The morning of September 11 was sunny and warm, a beautiful day. I left later than usual for the office in Midtown Manhattan. Mom needed some assistance that morning and when I left her apartment I was about 30 minutes off schedule. When I got on the subway, as usual I stood against the door, facing the window on the No. 7 Train. As we approached Queensboro Plaza in Long Island City, I could see the Manhattan skyline. Looking south, I noticed the World Trade Center was on fire, I said to the guy standing next to me -- "There's a fire in the WTC! It looks as if a plane has crashed into it!" From my vantage-point, the facade of the building looked broken. I immediately said a prayer for the people inside the building, the firemen who would arrive to rescue them and the people below who might be injured or killed by falling debris. When I got to the office, on my way to the 23 Floor, a young man in the elevator told me his wife had just called him on his cell phone to say a plane crashed into the WTC. I thought to myself, I was right. I told him I saw the building burning. Still thinking this was a tragic accident I continued on to my desk. Events of the day occurred very quickly after I arrived at work. My manager coordinated the effort with the senior managers of each division to determine if all of our sales and service personnel were accounted for. It wasn't long after I arrived that I realized the young man in the elevator was talking about the 2nd plane crash not the 1st. Only now was it clear to me, this was not an accident. We had been attacked! Fear surged through my body, but I was not panicked. I tried to remain calm. One of our employees had a small television in the office so we were able to get up-to-the-minute news. I couldn't bring myself to look at the television. I was told that people were holding hands and jumping out of windows from 100 stories above. The intensity of the fire was so great; they saw that as their only way out. Shortly after this, we heard that NYC was in a state of emergency, a total lockdown -- all NYC airports, bridges, and tunnels - everything came to a halt. I couldn't keep up with the phone calls. I was answering so many phones; I couldn't make any outgoing calls. One of my co-workers came to me and told me I better go over to one of the AA's who was very upset so I ran over to console her. At the same time, my sister Jane (who also works for the same company) came to tell me that our sister Anne was not at work and there was a possibility she may be at the WTC on a job interview. She had been on an interview at the WTC the Friday before and it was possible she was on a second interview. I told Jane I couldn't even allow myself to think about that -- it terrified me. I told her that Anne would be fine. Telephone communication began to deteriorate. It was difficult calling out especially to cell phones. The next announcement we heard was that the Pentagon was attacked. Our nation's entire air traffic system was shut down. All flights were cancelled until further notice. Only President Bush, in Air Force One was allowed to fly. I said out loud "This is War!" I will remember the following moment, as though it was yesterday, for as long as I live. A co-worker came over to my desk and told me that one of the towers just collapsed. In my mind I could see myself standing on my mother's terrace, looking at the Manhattan skyline and seeing only one tower standing. I imagined all of the people in the building, the staircases crumbling beneath them, free-falling to their deaths. I had the sensation, which I have experienced in a dream that I was falling; only I wasn't dreaming I was awake. I couldn't breathe; I gasped for air and wept uncontrollably. I remember saying "Oh my God all the people, how can someone hate so much!" Two co-workers came over to console me. I knew I had to regain my composure. It was around this time, after the first tower went down, that Jane called me to say that our sister Anne was safe and at home. I said a prayer of thanksgiving, but now I was shaking inside. Less than 30 minutes later, the nightmare got worse when the North Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed. A few minutes after, we heard that another plane, believed to be headed for the White House or Capitol buildings had crashed in Pennsylvania. God Help Us All! Employees were congregating in my work area. Everyone wanted to know what to do. Everyone was scared and wanted to go home, but remained calm. We communicated to all personnel by voice mail and e-mail that if it was possible to get home; they were free to go as long as each person notified their manager that they were leaving, and called to say that they had arrived home. Employees were stationed at the lobby of each floor to record who was leaving for the day. Mayor Rudolph Giuliani ordered the evacuation of Lower Manhattan at about 11:00 AM. Once we heard the bridges were open to pedestrians, Jane and I along with two co-workers decided not to wait until subway service resumed. We decided to walk home together. On our way uptown, we stopped at a store along the way so that two of us could buy sneakers for the 2+-mile journey ? we weren?t the only ones, many women were buying sneakers to replace their high heels. There were thousands of people evacuating the city and yet it was eerily quiet, except for the sirens of rescue vehicles on the way to the scene. Even the sound of car horns was absent. Everyone was calm, polite and focused and lent a helping hand to anyone in need. The four of us continued up Lexington Avenue and over the 59 Street Bridge, encouraging each other along the way and trying to allay each other?s fears. I'm so glad the four of us were together and able to calmly make our way home. It was on the 59 Street Bridge that we got our first look at the World Trade Center. It was a brilliant sunny day and all that could be seen was smoke and dust clouds covering lower Manhattan. Devastating. Although none of us said anything at the time, I think for an instant we all thought the same thing, "What if they were to bomb the bridges?" I couldn't let myself dwell on that. When we reached the apex of the bridge we could see thousands of people ahead of us. It looked like the Verrazzano Bridge the morning of the New York City Marathon. We left the office at about 12:30 PM and were over the bridge by 1:30 PM. We said farewell to one of the ladies at Queensboro Plaza. She continued on to her home in Long Island City. She told me later that people had set up tables outside their homes and offered water to everyone passing by. We continued on to Queens Boulevard. We had another 2 miles to go. Along the way, we met 2 other people from our company. At about 40 Street and Queens Boulevard, the MTA had set up a staging area of buses to transport people out of the area and down Queens Boulevard as quickly as possible. Jane and I were not interested in getting on a bus. The other ladies just missed getting on one, but things worked out for them. A pick up truck was stopped at a light. A young man asked the woman in the passenger seat if a few people could get in the back. The driver agreed so our co-workers, along with about 10 other people, climbed into the pick up truck. There they were standing in the back of the truck and as it pulled away, it reminded me of how ?the Press? precedes a parade with cameras ready. They were well on their way to getting home safe. As Jane and I walked along Queens Boulevard, we heard planes overhead. Knowing full well that all planes were grounded, this was not a comforting feeling. Someone ahead of us said they were Fighter Jets. I couldn't believe it. My home -- Fighter Jets -- NYC -- World Trade Center Collapsed -- War -- Thousands Dead. It was surreal. I didn't want to look at them for fear I would see them in pursuit of another plane. I had missed witnessing the first plane crash into the North Tower by seconds and if they were in pursuit of a plane, I did not want to be an eyewitness. Thank God they were just patrolling the area. The city was on Full Alert. It was a day or two later that we learned Fighter Jets were only 8 minutes away from New York City prepared to intercept the hijacked planes. There just wasn?t enough time. We arrived at Mom's at about 3:00 -3:30 PM. Mom was home and listening to the news on the radio. She and Jane embraced. It was good to be home. Michael, our brother, had driven home safely from the city; Anne and our nephew Thomas joined us as well. The first thing I did was to go out onto the terrace to see the skyline. Thick, dark, acrid smoke covered lower Manhattan. We sat and watched the news. I could not believe my eyes. I watched the 2nd plane attack, I thought to myself -- my God, what had the passengers thought when their plane was hijacked? ? what had the workers in the building thought when they saw the plane coming towards them? The absolute horror and terror imposed on them broke my heart. We saw the people above the fires hanging out the windows waving white clothes to signal distress -- then in desperation, holding hands and jumping to their deaths. I watched the collapse of the towers, the tsunami cloud of dust and debris which caused people to run for their lives, the look of fear on their faces, people tripping and being helped up, young students so frightened, tears streaming down their faces, being escorted by their teachers to safety. I still was not able to grasp the enormity of this event. Regular programming on television was pre-empted. All networks and cable channels were providing 24-hour coverage. The whole world was watching the coverage of this deliberate, premeditated, evil attack on innocent men, women and children. As we watched the news, we shared our stories. - Jane spent the morning calling to make sure all of our family members were safe. She called our brother in Maryland to find out whether our sister-in-law Miguela worked in the vicinity of the Pentagon and if she was safe. Our nephew Tim answered the phone. They were not aware of what was happening until Jane told them to put on the television. Jane also called our sister Anne at work. That?s when she realized there was a chance she might be on a second interview at 2 WTC. Jane assisted in accounting for the employees who work downtown. She was in touch with her good friend when the buildings were collapsing. Her friend was on the main concourse of the WTC and heard the first plane hit the north tower. At first, she took shelter in the Border?s bookstore in the lobby of the Trade Center. She saw the 2nd plane hit the south tower and knew she had to get out of there. While she was running uptown, she fell and hurt herself. She did not think she was going to live. She made it to an office at 11 Park Place. Jane told her to get out of there and get as far away as she could from downtown. Thankfully, she escaped. - Thomas saw the first tower collapse from his classroom window. Something a 17-year-old should never have to witness. The teachers tried to maintain normalcy, they drew the shades and continued with their lessons. One of Thomas? classmates was called to the principal?s office. His mother worked at the Trade Center. She did not come home. Thomas? father, Harry, picked him up from school on his way home from the Upper Eastside of Manhattan. Harry also walked over the 59 Street Bridge. - Michael was on the 59 St Bridge, driving to work, talking to his boss on his cell phone. As he was driving, he witnessed the second plane crash and a ball of fire explode from the center of the South tower. - We have 2 cousins that worked in the area. One escaped by running north and east (as he ran north, the thought occurred to him - What if they hit the Empire State Building next?) and the other by running to Brooklyn. - Anne had been at a doctor's appointment. When she got home and entered her apartment building, a neighbor asked her if she had heard about the World Trade Center. Anne said no and went upstairs. From her terrace, she could see a cloud of smoke behind the North tower. It looked as though one tower was gone, but that couldn't be she thought to herself. She went next door to her neighbor to find out what was going on. He told her one of the towers did collapse. His phone rang. While he was talking on the phone, Anne saw the North tower collapse. She went back to her apartment, out onto the terrace, got on her knees and prayed. We could not stop watching the news coverage. No matter how many times I saw the collapse, I couldn't believe it. We listened to Mayor Giuliani?s press conference. He advised everyone in the city to treat Wednesday as we would a ?snow? day. Only essential personnel should enter the city. When asked about the number of people that may be hurt or dead, he replied that the number "would be more than any of us can bear". It was already known that over 300 firefighters and police officers were lost. They had arrived on the scene before the 2nd tower was hit and had entered both towers to assist in a rescue effort. Mayor Giuliani asked that everyone remain calm and stay home with their children and families. We remained at Mom's until President George W. Bush addressed the nation that evening. He informed us that evidence was pointing in the direction of Osama Bin Laden of Afghanistan as the person responsible. Battleships and aircraft carriers were on their way to protect the East Coast of the United States of America. He assured us that we were a nation united and we would hunt down and punish those responsible. After his address, we each went home grateful we were not one of the thousands of families still waiting for word of a loved one. Were they in hospital, did they make it out, did they suffer, did they know how much they were loved, who were they with, where were they? Waiting, waiting, waiting. A pall had been cast upon this great city. Even the birds left us for a few days. The silence was painful. Tell us your story: hi my name is lauren and im from texas. the morning of september 11 was a normal morning i got up at six ate breakfast and then ran upthe street for my ride to school. We arrived at school at 7, ready to start dance practice. that friday was our 70's peprally, so we were dancing along to love shack. then, at 8 mr zepada one of our APs came on the announcement and said, "due to the recent tragedy in new york if all teachers could turn off their televisions untill further notified. Becasue we ariived before and were not allowed to listen to the radio, we had no clue what was going on. Immediately my mind raced to what the "tragedy" could possible be. The president was assasinated, another school shooting, someone else famous was assasinated. I had no clue. During this time our director called the office to see what the caious was all about. after abotu 30 minutes she returned, though something was different. She seemed shocked almost like maybe she had seen a ghost or something. we danced for another 30 minutes and then called circle. After telling announcements, giving compliments , and planning for the next day, our director finally todl us waht had happened. She said that two american airline jets had hit the world trade center towers. my mouth dropped. i coudltn believe it. i dont know how anyone coudl belive it. just that past year before i had performed int he macys parade, and had the cance to go into the world trade centers and see the view from the top floor. I was in complete shock i thoguht maybe it was a sick joke, but it wasnt. throughout the day none of the teachers obbayed the AP every single television was on. We walked like mummys to and from all of oru classes. you woudl walk in watch the televesion and then walk out.after school i immeidately went home adn turned the tv on. i sat there for 3 hours. i coudlnt belive that somehting soo magnificent could be gone in seconds. most kids in my school have never been to new york and dont really know the greatness of the towers i on the other hand spent 2 hours in amazement jsut making my own tour throughout the buildings. I had visited them that weekend and returned on Sunday out of the same airport.Devastating. Tell us your story: First i must say, To the men and women who fight for this country Thank you and to the workers who helped at Ground Zero, you are all heros! The morning of 9/11 i woke up early, before my alarm went off(which i never do). My mom had left the t.v. on when she left for work. I went in to her room to shut the t.v. off when i saw the first tower get hit, i remeber dropping to the floor in shock, when the second tower was hit i just started balling!!! I began calling my dad who works for a government agency. His partner did not know where he was(my dad lives in maryland and drives thru states to get to work)i told him as soon as he found him to tell my dad to call me. I then called my best friend, she's a flight attendant i wanted to make sure she was ok! She wasen't flying that day, sadly others did.She said she was fine, and she would call me later. i jumped in my car and headed to school in my pj's. on the way i kept calling my dad's office, finally my dad's partner again answered the phone and informed me that the building had been evacuated. i asked him if this was so why was he still their, his answer he was taking care of unfinished buisness i told him to get out now(he listened!). i recieved a call from my dad about an hour later he was fine but the shock and terror of what happen had hit us both bad. i asked him if we were going to war, who was behind it, are we safe. Every question i could think of i asked. he said he could'nt tell me he was as clueless as the next at this point. i called my brother after talking to my dad (my brother was in chicago) he said they had evacuated his college and all of downtown chicago. Every once in a while i think of the terroist who preformed this cowardly act and i become more angry. Now more then ever i feel as if i have to do something to protect myself my family and this country that allows us to be so free. I was never one to support the military forces i didn't agree with war at one point. But now more then ever i find myself wanting to join and help in any way possible so our future children do not see or feel what we have felt over this last year. I truely honor the men and women who were involved with the protection of this country and those who volunteered to go in to burning buildings and rumage through the broken steel.
