Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had been out of work for several weeks after being fired for falling asleep, because of new medications. My upstairs neighbor (and friend) called me at about noon and told me to turn on my television. I spent 4 days watching TV and hoping and crying. After witnessing the courage of all those people, and especially the unknown circumstances of what the heroes did on flight 93 - I decided my problems were nothing compared to what other people were going through. I pulled myself together, got a wonderful job as an accountant for the Baltimore County school system, and I constantly remember the inspiration of the people of that day and of the weeks that followed. Although I am still fighting the still unknown illness, I am trying to begin a business for myself, and whenever I get weary or frustrated, I remember those other who struggles so hard, and I try to accomplish whatever goals I have set for myself for that day. Today, one year later, I am also at a low ebb, but once again, through the sadness, I believe the inspiration of the courage of 9/11 will help me to turn my life around. If this tiny good can come to many people from so much sadness, as I believe it must, not only will that day and all the people that have died, or have lost loved ones, not have been in vain; but will have brought the people OF THE WORLD into a greater realization of the importance of PEACE ON EARTH. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was already late into the evening on September 11, and I was trying, unsucessfully to get to sleep. I have no idea why I had the pit in my stomach, I usually sleep like a log. I got up and turned on the television, on every channel I saw flames, smoke, and people screaming. I was physically about as far away from New York as you could get, but as the events unfolded on the screen before me, I couldn't have felt closer to the tragic scene if I had been standing in front of it. Exactly one year has gone by since the tragedy in the states and as I prepare to attend a memorial service my heart goes out to the victims and their families who lost so much in the September 11 attacks. I am a US citizen who was born in, and has lived in Australia for the majority of my life. As I read the stories of New Yorkers and people all over the world, my one wish is that I could ease the suffering and hurt. I live in one of the safest and luckiest countries in the world. So far Australia has escaped the viscious attacks that the US has, unforunatly, been exposed to. Despite my love for Australia and its people, I wish I could be in New York right now, and not a million miles away. I want to join together with others and show terrorists and those that spread such haterid and evil, that we are stronger, that we will band together to give strength and love to one another, despite the odds. I just don't understand how people could cause so much suffering on purpose, and my only explination is that they are jealous. Jealous of the wonderful freedom and love that Americans possess, jealous of the way that they do pull together in a crisis and gather strength from one another. And jealous of their pride and patriotism. Personally, these are the reasons why I love Americans, and why I am proud to say that I am a citizen of that country, despite living here in Australia. Again, my heart goes out to the people who have been hurt by this tragedy, and the souls of those that were lost. I am not a religious person, however I will pray for you all, pray that there can be peace and calm in the hearts and minds of all world citizens and that one day we truly will learn to live together in harmony and tolerance. Daily tallies have graced the pages of the city?s newspapers, reminding us of the dead and the missing. The number is too high for any of us to conceive. All of us, directly affected or emotionally attached, have shed more than one tear for the lost, more than one tear for the found and more than one tear for the unknown that has become the future. Within minutes after United Airlines Flight 175 struck the south tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, off-duty police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians were making their way through a labyrinth of roadblocks and traffic congestion into Manhattan to help out in any way possible. The attack of this second plane, preceded by the crash of American Airlines Flight 11 into the north tower, dismissed any doubt that a terrorist attack was underway in the greatest city in the world. A month since the attack, the city has become a different place than it was on September 10. It is no longer as important, for a time, what Jennifer Lopez is wearing, what Susan Sarandon is saying or whom George Clooney is dating. The heroes of Yankee and Shea Stadiums have taken a backseat to the heroes of police stations and firehouses, blue-collar workers who cut their own lawns and sit in traffic on the Long Island Expressway just like everyone else. Mike Piazza, king of the Mets, now wears a crown not of gold but of blue cloth, embroidered with four bold letters: NYPD. New York City police officers, long held at disregard by a small group of vocal citizens, have had to become accustomed to a grateful public that stops them on the street as many as ten times a tour not to complain about a problem in their daily life but to say ?Thank you.? Even the hard-hearted among the ranks have been softened in spirit by the outpouring of support that the attacks have generated. The nation itself has given their hearts and their souls to help in the relief efforts underway in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania, where two other planes struck the morning of September 11. Rescuers from distant cities have joined the effort to find life in the wreckage or to pass out food and water to ironworkers laboring beyond exhaustion to bring closure to a grieving family. Memorial services have begun in New York and in counties that surround the city and into New Jersey and Connecticut for those who have come to grips with their losses. The sight of a fire truck with the letters FDNY navigating the streets of Long Island would have seemed out of place three weeks ago. Today, we simply bow our heads in prayer. Many doorways, storefronts and car windows have been adorned with the beautiful rectangular constellation of the fifty stars and the 13 red and white strips that collectively make up the American flag. The unity and support has undoubtedly helped many. New York, a city more famous for fashion than compassion, has reinvented itself. The heart on the New York City t-shirt that screams in bold letters I LOVE NEW YORK seems to have gotten bigger. The t-shirt, long a tell-tale sign of a vacationer without fashion sense, has become a staple of city residents, commuters and visitors. And why not? Who among us in this nation today does not bear the right to say that they too, in some small way, are a New Yorker? As I was walking out the door, my dad said "hey Jen, come look at this, a plane just crashed into the world trade center." I went and look at it, and I was confused, no one knew why it happened. So I went to school like any other day. When we got in class the teacher turned on the TV and we watched the second plane hit. Then it was determined it was a terrorist attack. The thought of that was very scary and gave me chills. After watching TV for about 15 minutes we went on about or lesson. My next class was Spanish and we did normal work in there. That would prove to be the only class that went along undisturbed by the awful events of that day. Through all the rest of my classes, we didn't do anything except watch TV and listen to the radio. Then I went to band class. Our instructor told us the put all the emotions we were feeling into our music, and we did. And it was the best that song ever sounded. Band was my last class of the day. So I went home and my mom came home early from work. She and I talked about it. I called my bestfriend and she asked me to come over and we'd light candles and sit out on the driveway. Since I didn't have much homework, I went. It was really cool, we lit lots of candles and sat on the driveway. A group of girls came over and sat with us. We played songs like "Angel" and other some what uplifting songs. It was really neat to see much of the neighborhood come together like that and just be together. When I went home, I went to bed hoping that the next morning I'd wake up and it would have all gone away, but it didn't. It was a dream. And now we live basically afraid waiting for another attack. Its really sad that it takes something like this to open our eyes and bring us together. I remember when the first plane struck the tower I was standing in the doorway of my math class. I was having a human confesation with a teacher that did not seem to enjoy having me in her class. A student who's name I can not recall walked in, and turned on the tv just in time for us to see the first plane hit. I hurried to my chemistry class. I made it to my seat just in time to look up and see yet a second plane unleash its destruction upon the towers. I remember the stuned looks on everones faces. I watched as people leaped from the buildings. I remember the tears we all shed that day for those that were lost, and those missing, but for me they were certainly for those who made it through. I froze with fear all day that they would call on one of my brothers to leave, to go fight. The thought hit me that several of my friends were military as well as my family. At work we lite candles for the victims of 9-11, friends, family, for the heros, and for the armed service. A year latter and the same fear arose in me. He always has a radio on in his backroom where he works and he said that he had just heard a report on the radio that an airliner has smashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Center! I immediately went outside to take a look outside because on my drive to work it appeared to be a beautiful day and still was with crystal clear blue skies. Being a former holder of a private pilots license I was dumbfounded as to how such an "accident" could possibly happen with such perfect flying conditions. Then I don't think it was even an hour later when he came running out again to say that a second plane had struck the other tower.Then it dawned on us all that these were no "accidents". Then the rest of the day just seem to take on a surreal quality as the reports kept coming in of the Pentagon being struck and of the White House and Capital Building being evacuated,an additional plane crashing in Pennslyvannia! All i remember about how I felt was that I was confused. I had never hear dof the World Trade Center, Osama Bin Laden, and I didn't understand why it was so awful that they had been hit with a plane until I heard people say the words, "terrorist attacks." Those two words suddenly made me understand that events like 9-11 is what causes wars to start. Suddenly I knew why everyone was in such aw over the entire occasion. Tell us your story: I had just gotten out of a meeting and taken some notes when a co-worker told me that a single engine plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I headed to the lunch room to check out the news and found out that an airliner, not a single engine plane, had hit the building. It was about then when the second plane hit and all of us knew it was no accident. For the next several hours I found myself glued to the television, absorbing as much information as possible. My thoughts constantly drifted to my older brother and brother-in-law, a C-17 pilot and an inteligence officer in the Air Force, respectively. I knew something would develop, militarily, from these incidents and I couldn't help but be concerned for their safety. I have to admit, that day was one of the longest of my life and I hope I never have to relive it. I feel like I'm kinda late in doing this but wanted everyone to know that this tragedy didn't just hit the U.S. it hit your neighbors as well. It was just a normal work day for me. I work at Walmart up here in Edmonton, Alberta. I first heard the news around 8:45 am when I went for my first break. Someone said that an airplane hit the World Trade Center and it sounded like an accident. But then the "story" went around that another airplane hit the World Trade Center again and this time there was talk of a terrorist attack. Alot of us gathered around Layaway desk to hear what was happening on the radio. We were all in shock to think that something like this could happen. I didn't hear much more then that until my friend went home for lunch and came back with the story that she saw on the news. Both towers were hit and collapsed, the pentagon was hit and another plane that was headed for the White House went down somewhere else in Pennsylvania. How could this be happening? Why would someone do this to our neighbors? I am the "leader" of our Charity Club in the store I work in. As soon as we heard what happened, we started a "charity box" for the victims of this terrible tragedy. It was between 9:45-9:55 so all of the terrorists had already hit their target. He gave the news vaguely, as I remember being under the initial influence that the attacks had somehow been orchestrated as a transatlantic flight that hadn't been intercepted on its 5000mi trip from Portugal or something like that. Then I remember the dissapointment I felt when I heard that the figters sent to intercept were sent from bases hundreds of miles away from the target. The day questioned me, challenged me... Is america supposed to make mistakes like that? How did the air traffic controllers miss the plane's trajectory? Isn't the Urban area of New York City a no fly zone? What about the Pentagon? in any case... the day began like any other ... and ended in the rift of eternity... ...and eternity cried for those who lost their lives... I called my doctor's office around 9 AM to make an appointment and heard the women in the office talking about somebody's son who worked "there" and they were wondering about how he was. At this point, of course, I had no idea what was going on and decided to turn on the television, just in time to see the second plane hit. From that point on I could not turn it off. I called my sister to let her know what was going on. I tried to call my mother, who is a civilian employee for the Navy downtown, but was unable to reach her. I could only pray for her as I watched the proceedings on the television. I saw the first tower start to sway and then collapse and could only wonder why I saw this on the screen, but the news anchors were not talking about it until after it happened. At this time I started to pray for everyone. Needless to say, I accomplished very little work after that point. While I lost no one that day, sitting here and writing about this still makes me cry. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I took my daughter to the Oral Surgeon that morning to have her Wisdom Tooth removed. She was in with the dentist and I was in the waiting room. There was one other woman sitting in the waiting area. We were sitting very quiet, each reading a magazine. The radio was on. When they said a plane had hit the World Trade Center in New York, we both looked up at each other and started saying how awful that was, and the poor people in the building and in the planes. Of course, like the rest of the world, we thought it was an accident, then one of the dental assistant's yelled that another plane went into the other building. We all got very scared at that point because obviously, like everyone else we had figured we were under attack. I don't think I have every been that scared in my life. At this point the dentist came out and told me my daughter was in the recovery room. Everyone that worked there was trying to concentrate on their work, but when news came that the Pentagon had been hit, everyone went a little crazy. They were running back and forth talking to the dentists, talking to the patients, the phones started ringing. During all this, my daughter was laying in the recovery room not quite knowing what was going on. I remember pacing back and forth from the hall to the recovery room saying "Oh my God, we are under attack." I must have said it 20 times. I just wanted to take my daughter and go home. The nurse finally came in and told us she could go. We drove home to Malden, a city just north of Boston, and immediately turned on the television. At that point, they were replaying the planes going into the tower, my sister called me and said they had both collapsed, I said "No they didn't, I'm looking at them right now on television," she then said wait and they will show it, when they did, I was in shock like everyone else and I just started crying and praying for all the people and their families. I remember thinking that there were people out there watching this and their loved one(s) was on one of those planes or in one of those buildings. I can't begin to imagine what they went through. I wanted to stay home an watch more, but I had to go to work. When I got there everyone was gathered around the radio listening. Needless to say, nothing got done that day. We were shocked to learn that two of the planes had come from Logan. I remember someone saying, I wonder if we know anyone on those planes. It turned out some co-workers did know some people. One co-workers neighbor got a phone call later that day from her neice, she was screaming, "I have no parents, I have no parents". Both of her parents were on one of the planes. We found another co-worker outside crying the next day, one of her good friends was on one of the planes. I remember my mother talking about Pearl Harbor and I thought how scary that day must have been for everyone. I guess we all know what it was like back then. None of us will ever forget that horrible act the cowards committed that day. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone that was directly impacted by this. I have read some of the stories of people that were in the area or in the buildings and I can't get them out of my mind. New Yorkers are strong people to be able to carry on so soon after this tragedy. That exact same day, my brother and I did not go to school because we were both ill. I think we were the firts students to witness the towers fall and know that New York was being attacked. We were both in the living room changing channels when we suddently saw and heard how the Towers were coming down like an avalanche. We were so suprised to see what was happening It was like a normal day not knowing what was going to happen. We saw how the people were running away from the buildings and the smoke. It was 2nd period. I was excused to go to the restroom. On my way down the hallway, I heard most of the classroom television on and wondered why everyone was watching the news. When I arrived back into the room, our TV was on also and I saw that one of the buildings of the WTC had been hit by a commercial airplane. At that point, I didn?t really understand what it meant or how it happened. I thought it was just an accident. Then, I saw the 2nd plane hit the other building. By that time, I figured it wasn?t an accident. But I still didn?t understand what happened or the impact of the crashes. Soon after the 2nd plane crash, I went to my 3rd period class and heard that a plane had crashed in Pennsylvania. Everyone around school didn?t really take it too seriously because it wasn?t really clear that it was a terrorist attack. But by the end of the day, our teachers had informed us that it was in fact a terrorist attack. When I got home, I saw that the Pentagon was hit also. I then, began to worry about my aunt who is the Secretary of the District of Columbia. After hearing that the Capitol Building was evacuated, I called my sister and she told me that our aunt had gotten home safely. I later found out that my cousin?s wife worked at one of the WTC buildings but happened to head to work late that morning and was told to go back home. I wouldn?t say that September 11, has changed my life but it has certainly changed my attitude on things. It?s made me realize how good life is and the things that I should be doing while I have it. It has also made me realize that we?re possibly closer to the last days than I thought. Due to my beliefs in God and the Bible, I can?t help but wonder how many more tragedies like September 11 will happen in the future. The way things are going in the Mid-East and all the bad things that continue to happen makes me worry what tomorrow could bring. I think the patriotism that was shown right after September 11 should most be remembered. It?s the most I?ve seen in my life. I didn?t really hang an American Flag that I own. The patients were watching the TV's as they were waiting to complete their procedures. When suddenly, someone yelled for us to look at the screen. What we saw was one of the WTC towers on fire. All of us thought that it had been an accident, but as time went on, we knew that wasn't the case. My daughter attends the Fashion Institute of Technology on 27th St in Manhattan. I was hoping and praying that she was safely asleep in her dorm room that morning. I called my husband at work. He was listening to the days' events on the radio. We, and our other children, and immediate family, tried frantically to call our daughter, but we couldn't get through to Manhattan. One of the patients' had a son at the time who was also attending college in Manhattan. She didn't have anyway she could contact her son. She and I sat together, and prayed for our children. I couldn't concentrate on my work anymore, and just broke down. Finally, around 11:00 a.m., my daughter called from Manhattan. She said she had slept through the attacks (she was app. 3 miles from the WTC). My mother-in-law finally had gotten through to her and told her what was happening around her. She said when she opened her window, all she could hear was people screaming, continous sirens, and the fighter jets flying over the city. She and her friends tried to walk down to Ground Zero, but access was blocked off. She kept in communication with us as much as possible. She knew she couldn't come home as trains were stopped, and I knew I couldn't drive in to get her as traffic into and out of Manhattan was shut down. She finally was able to come home on the train the next day. Her school had bomb threats and evacuations in the 48 hours following the attack. She got off the train, and came over to me, and hugged me tightly and just cried. She said she was so scared. Grand Central Station was empty except for soldiers carrying machine guns. The station was surrounded by police and army vehicles. She had walked off the train with some firefighters from Bridgeport who had just been to the WTC sight. She had listened to their stories of the horrific sights and tasks they had just experienced. She was glad to be home, but she continued to be very worried about her friends that could not get home,and continued to try to stay in contact with them until I drove her back to school that Sunday night. She just kept asking why did this have to happen now, her dream of going to F.I.T. was finally coming true,why? I was a junior at the University of Pittsburgh. It was about 10:30am and I was entering Hillman Library after my first class of the day ended. As I was walking in, hoards of other students were leaving. Library employees were telling us that the library was closing and that we all needed to go back home. The university was closed. On my walk back to my apartment my anxiety grew. What had happened? No one that I talked to seemed to know. I walked past many cars and trucks with their radio volumes high. It seemed there was an airplane crash somewhere, but where? When I finally reached my apartment all of my roommates were watching CNN. I was quizical, but they filled me in. I sat down to absorb what they were telling me. How could someone bomb the trade towers with an airplane? As my brain was trying to comprehend, the second tower went down. It was ugly. I didn't like watching, nor could I come to reality. Everything I saw on TV looked like a slick Hollywood movie with great effects, except these effects looked much more believable. One of the hijacked planes went down in Somerset County, about 80 miles east of my location. Parents and friends tried calling my apartment to check up on us. It was almost impossible to get through. Much of the city of Pittsburgh was closed. If you were in you were staying in. And those who were out we didn't want to come in. Rumors were flying, people were checking parked cars for bombs, the streets were quiet. No one felt comfortable. My roommates are from the D.C. area. My friend who has a sister who worked in the 7th building of the Trade Center. She has a different job now. Other than paranoia, these were the people that I knew that were physically close to the action. It's too bad that a whole nation had to be emotionally close to such an atrocity. A year later I still get tears in my eyes when I hear the interviews on TV. It's heartwrenching to see how many children have matured, all because they lost a parent. I hate it, I change the channel because I get so sick of it. I'm ready to move on, but I know I won't forget.
