Tell us your story: In my first block class, the chorus teacher was correcting students on the song we had been singing when a student, who had left the room, returned to announce the beginnings of a horrific day. As the news was whispered across the room, no one could believe what they were hearing. The class believed that a bomb had been dropped on the United States, but that was the extent of our knowledge until Mr. Brown, the teacher, turned on the television, and to our terror, we learned the country was under attack. There was no bomb. Instead a jetliner had crashed into a trademark- one of the World Trade Centers. As the class gawked at the anchorman in disbelief, a second plane struck the remaining tower. The coverage continued, but our viewing did not to the dismay of many students and myself when Mr. Brown announced there were songs that needed practicing before the upcoming concert. As the class went on, no one in the class was in the mood for singing. After first block was dismissed, the halls were loud and bustling with the sounds of panic-stricken students yearning to go home. I, myself, went my usual way to my English class still wondering what was going on. Even when I learned of the Pentagon being hit and yet another plane crashing in Pennsylvania, I didn?t know what to think. Was it all a sick joke? I?d learn that the deaths of thousands of innocent citizens were anything but a joke. While I tried paying attention in English, it was quite difficult because of the students demanding the news be turned on, but until the end of class we would remain unknowing of the last two planes crashing. When I arrived in my third block class, social studies, the television was on and the volume was blaring. That whole eighty-four minutes of class was spent discussing the attacks and why people could ever do such a thing, even though these kinds of attacks were recognized daily in other countries around the world. For once, every single member of the class paid attention to the instructor with interest. Because no other major events occurred for a while, my Spanish teacher went ahead and handed out the test that was already scheduled, despite many protests because of the current state of shock felt by many, including myself. Towards the remaining minutes of class, she allowed us to view Mayor Guiliani during a news conference. When school was dismissed, I was much relieved so that I could go home and watch all the TV I wanted. That night, I was a bit scared to go to sleep for fear that other attacks had been planned. After a couple of months I realized President Bush had everything under control and the country wasn?t in danger for the time being, which relieved most of my fear. Because of that tragic September 11th, 2001, I have become much more interested and concerned in current events occurring throughout the world, all the while preparing myself, should anything else of the sort happen. While I still feel pity for those who suffered, I try my best to live my own life to the fullest each and every day. In my senior English class we had been watching a movie when a teacher from another room came and whispered something to my teacher. My teacher quickly switched off the movie and turned on the news. Many people where in horror as they watched the towers fall, but me I had no idea what was going on. I still thought my teacher was talking about the movie when she was telling us about the World Trade Centers. The more I watched, the more horrified I became. All I could think about was the people in those planes, and in the buildings. It was the most horrible thing that has have ever happened in my life time! I still can't erase the pictures from my mind, of the survivors faces, and the clouds of death hoovering above New York. That day is a day to be remembered, and I will be able to tell what I saw from that little class room and how it impacted our lives forever. Tell us your story: Im a British girl and was in my seventh month of working as an aupair in America when the tragedy happened. i had just gotten up when i saw the twin towers in flames on the tv, i couldnt belive it, i thought it was a dream but of course it wasnt it was reality. Then they showed pictures of the pentagon in washington D.C, well that was only 20 minutes away from me and i had been there the day before! then the phones were ringing in the home i lived in, my host mother had been evacuated from her place of work in downtown D.c as she worked for the goverment, and that her children who i cared for were coming home from school, my host father was in Atlanta at the time and was grounded there till further notice. When the children and there mother arrived we all sat and wathched the horrifyig events on the tv, i had been crying for a while by this point and thought it best that i call my parents back home in the u.k to tell them i was ok, they were very worried but i assured them that we were all ok. The following day the children and i lit candles and said a prayer on our porch, this was a big thing for me as i am not religous atall, but it felt right to say my thoughts and cares aloud, while saying our prayers we could hear the fighter jets in the sky above hovering over the city trying to keep it safe, no longer could we see or hear the many airliners flying overhead to the 3 main airports near our home, that was an earey experience that will stay with me forever. September 11th will stay with me forever, and even though i was a british girl in America at the time, i felt even more proud to be there and to join in with the coming together of americans and its culture. Before i came back home 6 months after the event, I visited ground zero, i had been to New York 3 times before but this time it was so much different, i read the memorials and couldnt belive that this was once the world trade centre. I got back home and it was still very much in my mind, and most people were fasinated about what it was like for me to have been there at the time. On september 11th 2002 i hung a american flag in my window and tied an american ribbon around my car ariel, i spent most of that day crying. I just cannot imagine what it must have felt like for all those poor innocent men and women, and it burns a hole in my heart everytime i think about it. September 11th was one of the most upsetting and heartbreaking days of my life and i will never forget it, it was an honour to have experienced America coming together stronger at such a devastating time. We never think something like this can happen to a country as powerful as the U.S. It made me realize God has a plan and we seem to forget that. Maybe our country will realize we need to turn to God for his plan for our country and our lives and let him be the leader he was meant to be. I called home to check in with my mother in law ans she was crying when she answered the phone and told me to come home. I thought something was wrong with my daughter and she said, "No, a plane just flew into the World Trade Center". She continued to cry and we kept talking through the news stories. I try to keep in touch with an e-mail list that includes members from several countries. From Australia, Canada, England. The first thing I do when I wake up is turn on the TV. It was about 8:50AM. I clicked on "Good Morning America". Saw the smoke & flame from the first strike. Then I saw the second strike. I called my husband. I called a special friend. Then I sat down at my computer, here in the bedroom, right in front of the TV. That I think saved my sanity. I sent a message with the basic details to the group. From then until late evening the day's horrors went in my ears (mostly), eyes & out my fingers. At first I sent e-mails everytime it got too long. Then every half hour. The number was over 25. Many on the list had no contact with information. One friend, in Canada, was at work at a college business school. They had many graduates working in the WTC. My posts were printed out & passed out. An English member kept her neighbors informed. The other group members thought I had done them a favor when in actuality, their need for information kept me connected & I believe sane. It was several months before I could turn on the TV without worrying. And even now I make sure I visit the bathroom first. I was on the computer when I saw on line the news of the airplane going into the trade center, at first I was not sure what was going on and then heard all this talk of terriosts. I was so in shock I did not know what to feel or believe. I cried thinking of the lives that were lost so unnecessary. I could not talk to any one how I felt all these emotions going on inside my head. I wanted to scream but couldn't. I wanted to cry but it would not come out. For some strange reason, I turned on the television as soon as I woke up... and this is something I don't normally do. Peculiar as this is, I woke up at about 9:00, so you can imagine the media coverage by now. I must have seen the first plane hit the tower about 8 times, before I finally could pick my jaw up off the floor. My initial reaction was (as I'm sure many others would completely agree) "I can't believe this... is this really happening?" It probably sunk in today. For months, I was still in disbelief that something like this could happen. That something.. I wont even give the credit to these terrorists as being human beings. The don't deserve the credit to be put alongside living, breathing people with heartbeats as being called a human. I can remember exactly what my morning was like, where I was, and what was going on around me when this all happened... I will spare you the details, but I have kept a journal of that day... I wrote my feelings on paper as I was watching the news unfold. It is just a really sad thing to witness... and over and over again... We can ask why till' we're blue in the face, but nothing will ever change the fact that these cold blooded killers took so many lives. I just want to say that I'm proud to be an american, and it's really sad that it took something like this to wake everyone up. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was a senior in high school. I got up that morning, as I had every morning, without any idea that something had happened. I got dressed for school, watching SportsCenter on ESPN. There was nothing about the attacks on ESPN, so I had no idea that anything was wrong. I went to school that morning, listening to a CD in my truck. Once again, I had no idea that anything was wrong. I was sitting in my first period class, when my teacher came running into the room, mumbling something about the World Trade Center and a plane crash. She was hard to understand, but she turned the radio on in the class. That was the first time all day that I had heard anything about the attacks. Then, everyone thought that the crash was just an accident. My teacher was in charge of taking pictures for the yearbook in my school's lunch room, so our class went into the lunch room for the rest of the period. Not 10 minutes after we got into the lunch room, another teacher came running into the room screaming "Another plane has just crashed into tower 2 of the World Trade Center. We are under attack." That is when I realized that our country would never be the same again. All day long, my teachers tried to give us work to do but no work was ever done. Every classroom was clued to a tv or a radio. That afternoon, all planes were grounded. Normally, a few planes flew over our practice football field. On that day no planes flew over, giving off a very strange and odd silence. One small plane flew over our field and within a few minutes, U.S. Air Force Jet planes were escorting the small plane back to the ground. I got home that afternoon and was told by my dad to go and fill my truck up with gas, seeing as how no one had a clue as to exactly what was going to happen. All the way to the gas station, I kept looking into the sky scared to death and wondering if we would see anything like that again. At the gas station, I spent 45 minutes trying to get to a gas pump. Within those 45 minutes, the gas prices went from 1.59 a gallon to 2.10 a gallon. It was the most absurb thing I've ever seen. Thank God a cop was there and forced the station owner to bring the prices back down. All day long I felt that everything that had happened was just a big horrible dream and that I was going to wake up. Sometimes now, I still wonder if it all is just a dream and that I will wake up to find that September 11th never took place. All I can say now is "God Bless America." Had my other children off on the school bus.As me and my youngest daughter are eating breakfast i flip on the tv and to my surprise the first tower was hit . At this time i do not know what is going on i sat there in surprise . As the events unflod i am still in disbelief as i think we all were. i decide to call my mom who works second shift as i knew she would be in bed and not know anything about it . as i talk to her and watch my daughter asks who is turning 4 on september 13th why is there a plane in the buiding ? how do you awnser something like that to a 4 year old that we teach love and respect and peace to ? it was a very hard time as a mother . as the day goes on my husband is calling who is at work and had just went on lunch and happened to turn the radio on and heard a little what was going on . i told him what we knew so far everyone was so surprised . my other chilldren arrived home that afternoon from school . my oldest who is a boy and in 1st grade was able to watch on tv what had happened . I had biology that day and my biology teacher told the whole class that New York, Washington, and a rural area in Pennsylvania was attacked. That day, I was worried because I have relatives in Brooklyn. I called them and they said they are okay. When I got home from school, the September 11th, 2001 or 9/11 as everybody calls it was all over the news. I felt bad for those people that died on the plane who were supposed to head to their designated cities, And those people that died in the World Trade Center who didn't have time to get out of the building when one plane hit hit in the south tower and another in the north tower. We were in English class when our teacher told us that he heard that a plan had flown into the TwinTowers. I don't think I had ever really heard much about the TwinTowers before this, so I had to ask where they were. My teacher said that the TwinTowers in New York had been hit. About 1 or 2 hours later, we heard that they had collapsed and that thousands were either trapped or killed. We all watched the news during our gym class and were in a somber state. There was no joking and no laughing. We all felt sad for all who had family that were in the Towers. Truthfully, I was a little scared because I was afraid that something might happen close to our area. Then something did happen. A plane was flown into the Pentagon and a plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. That was a little too close to home. I was scared but I knew that I could trust in the Lord for protection. My sister called and said put on the local cable news station, that one of the towers had an explosion. It was so new, that no one knew it was a plane yet. I can still feel how I felt about those dead already and those on the upper floors. Then people started calling in, saying it was a plane. But nothing was confirmed yet. As we watched the TV, we saw the 2nd plane hit the second tower. We knew there was something terribly wrong. Never in the history of NY, had even 1 plane ever hit a building in the city. My husband wanted to keep our daughter home, but I wanted to keep things semi normal even though this event would change NY and America forever. As we continued to watch the TV stations, we also listened to our police scanner. Once my husband heard a call dispatched to a patrol car, that a school was contacted by phone, that the children should not be out a lunch time today, the decision was made. If we were under attack, our child would be with us. We pulled her out of school as so many other parents did the same. We found out my husband's cousin was safe that day. He was off from work. Twice he has escaped from terrorism in the World Trade Center, since he was there for the garage bombing, as well. His fellow workers did not make it then. In the days that passed, I could not keep my daughter away from the news. At night I would change the TV station to one of her channels and the next day, I would hear the news. I told her, "Just watch your station, Honey." And she would reply,"I want to watch the Twin Towers, Mommy." Eventually, it caught up with her and she wouldn't go to bed by herself. I finally told her that all the bad people were caught and she said, "Even the ones under the sand?" We had never spoken about Bin Laden or the deserts. She learned this from the TV. I told her, "even the ones under the sand." She has gotten better, but she is still not 100%. For the 1 year anniversary, I kept the TV off. I knew the school would touch on it slightly and I would speak with her afterwards. She was okay that day. But she has decided on her own to make a book as a tribute to that fateful day. I have saved her drawing from last year of the Towers burning and will keep all these things together. Life is truly not the same since these attacks, but I believe the worst thing we could do, is stay at home and be afraid. Watching the TV, that day, was like watching a scene from a movie, with all the smoke surrounding the city. But we will not give the terrorists completely what they want. We cherish our freedom. Not a day goes by that I don't think of that horrible day. I thank God that no one I knew personally perished, but I do have friends who did have someone perish. I continue to go to the baseball games and basketball games. And when I sit in Madison Square Garden or ride the trains and subways, I do often wonder if we'll be under attack again. But life goes on, and for the sake of those innocent people who perished that day, I need to live for them. God Bless America!!! Tell us your story: when i woke up that morning it started just like any other day, but the whole world changed in the amount of time it took me to take a shower. it was like something i had never felt before. i wasn't scared and i wasn't exactly shocked either. it was strange. the events that happened that day haven't really had a strong impact on me. i didnt know anyone directly involved with the events. the on thing that had an emotional impact on me was all the children who lost their mothers or fathers that day. my dad died when i was two months old and i have had to grow up with only the memories of the people who knew him well. im seventeen now and i have just started to realize that he has been the missing piece in my life and that has had an impact on the kind of person i am. I wasn't quite sure how things were going to happen that day, and all of my friends and I were debating what wraith the US would retaliate with on whoever did that. But the thing is that it hardly effected me personaly because noone I know was really effected by it, but it did hit me like it hit the nation. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My father is an Independent Duty Corpsman in the Navy, and was based at the navy annex about 100 yards west of the pentagon. When the plane came in to hit the pentagon, he was watching on the news for information on the World Trade Center attacks. As soon as the plane passed by, he was on his way down to the pentagon. The Navy Annex clinic was the first group to set up triage for the disaster. as people came in, My dad was the first to treat them. I was en route to my 5th period classwhen I heard something was wrong. I had a headache, so I stopped by the clinic in the building for some Motrin. while I was listening to the radio, I heard something about shutting down the government buildings in richmond, and I concluded that there was a bombing down there. It wasn't until I got into 5th period that I found out that the World trade enter and the Pentagon had been atcked with commercial aircraft. I didn't see my dad until about 11:30 that night, and that was only long enough for him to say, "hi, I'm leaving for New York, and I don't know when I'll be back". We didn't see him for another week. He was on The UHS Comfort aiding in the recovery efforts at the world trade center. HE recived the bronze star for his work on that day. Tell us your story: I had just returned from my annual leave from Europe and was getting back to my business environment with full throttle--after one month of absence my desk was full and a major upcoming event on the 12th had to be prepared. So I started my work on Monday 10 with all the energy I had. I gathered with my team to see whether all preparations had gone according to schedule and after i realized that everything was on time I entered into the final dialogue with our Chinese business partners for a final briefing, since they were a part of the big meeting we were preparing for the 12th. And as it goes in China, I had to invite them for dinner on the 11th. The atmosphere was very pleasant that evening especially because everybody felt that both, we as well as the Chinese had done all to their best to make the meeting a success. So we decided to continue our evening and move on to a karaoke bar. I usually avoid these places mainly because it does not really reflect my attitude towards good entertainment and also for a simple reason: they usually don't have enough english songs for me, which makes me feel bored. But I decided to sponsor that part of the evening also, so I had to go and "give face" to my Chinese friends. One chinese song after the other appeared on screen but mine was still not coming and I decided to leave after the the one I had chosen--it was Frank Sinatra's "My Way". After almost one hour of waiting in that bar I could see that my song would be soon on-screen so I took over the microphone from a colleague who had just finished his song. I do not remember the exact time but it must have been between 2030 and 2100 hours local time, which is +12 hrs to New York time. Just at the very moment I wanted to start singing my mobile phone rang and I was quite annoyed. But I picked it up and was telling to my good friend that I have no time now 'cause I was in the middle of a song. He insisted and asked me whether I heard the news about a plane accident at the WTC--appearantly that was plane number one and nobody really believed it might have been a terror strike at that moment. I was very short with my comments and told him to call me later, I would be busy right now....So I sang my Sinatra song I had been waiting for! Time passed by, a second call comes in-this time from a friend in Shanghai. She was telling me about a second plane that hit the WTC. Her voice was trembling. That was the time when I asked my Chinese friends to switch from the karakoe video channel to national TV... CCTV1 was broadcasting the live pictures coming from CNN. I was looking once, twice and I looked back to the rest of the audience in the room and we thought we were in the movies. It was a mixture of disbelief and horror that shook us. The Chinese were sort of smiling, which was a clear signal to me that they were not able to cope with the situation so we quickly turned the TV back to video. I packed my things and rushed back to my hotel and was watching the catastrophe over and over again until i finally slept from fatigue.... One year later I still feel horrified about the idea this could happen to anybody, in any city, at any time and I hope our civilizations are andvanced and mature enough to cope with the imminent threat of terror. I came into the office and turned on the radio because there had been a plane crash in New York. We all listened in horror as the second plane was reported. Several factors will always make that day unforgettable on many levels for me. First of all, I was three months pregnant and I was so worried for the unborn baby in me - what kind of world would my baby know? Secondly, I truly believed we were under attack and that this was the beginning of WWIII. Thirdly, we had a college-age intern in our office from Germany, she was terrified and didn't know if she would be immediately deported, or if she would be allowed to return home or not. I've written an account of that day in my daughter's baby book and saved the Sept. 12th newspaper for her. My hope is that she will never fear like I did that day and every day since.
