Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11 I was getting ready for the inaguration of our new University President, Dr. Craig Turner. I was in the process of getting dressed wanted to know how cold it was outside so I went out to the lobby of my dorm and once in the lobby I noticed a bunch of people gathered around the T.V. area. I walked over and immediately was just as mesmerized and shocked as the others that were standing there. I looked at the tv just in time to see the World Trade Center crumble to the ground after a plane crashed into the side of it. I stood there for a few minutes and waited until it moved the camera angles to the ground and brushed it off and went back to my room. I finished getting dressed and went to the inauguration only to discover that one of my friends was not there because she was sure that her dad had been on that plane and was trying to find out for sure if he was or not. No one noticed because she slipped in the back during the middle of the ceremony but afterwards I saw her and she told me, with great relief, that her dad had not been on that plane. I went back to my dorm and began watching the whole thing on television and only after a news announcement did I remember my brother. My older brother is in the Army and is in Intelligence. I knew he would be fine and not directly affected but I still wanted to hear that he was okay. I called him right then but he wasn't in so I left him a message to call me ASAP! After I hung up I dialed my best friend, Tom's number, who is in the Marines Special Forces, and didn't get a response from him either. I then remembered that he was supposed to leave for Italy that day. I called his parents at his home and didn't get an answer there either. I left a message for them to call me back ASAP. I finally decided to call my parents and see how they were doing. After talking to my mom I felt better, but I started crying. I finally began praying, which is what I should have done in the first place. I poured my heart out to God telling him that even though I didn't understand what was going on I knew it had to be a part of His perfect plan and that everything was going to work out for His glory. I continued praying as I began reading my Bible. I remembered a song that had been playing earlier that morning as I had been getting dressed. "God is in Control" by Twila Paris. I thought back to the words and realized that it was so true. Later that night I got two phone calls. One from my brother and one from Tom's parents. Both brother and Tom were absolutely fine and completely safe. God really is in Control! Tell us your story: My name is MSgt Mickey Vickers an on 11 Sept 01 I was at my desk reviewing medical records when someone ran into it and said that the twin towers in New York City had been hit by two airliners. At that same instance I thought to myself how can two aircraft especially airliners crash into the towers over a big metropolitan area as New York City. Then the third crash came over the radio. I went to a TV in the Dental Clinic and started watching the coverage. It was horrifying to see bodies falling to get away from the flames. I started praying for those who had died and those left with probably injuries beyond belief. I watched as the firefighters and EMS and police went to the site of destruction and then the first tower collapsed and then the second. Tears flowed from my eyes knowing that those brave men and women would probably not come back home. As the day went on I probably worked only about 1 hour. I wanted to know was there survivors and were any of them the Firefighters, police, and EMS personnel. As the day went on miracles did happen and some did not. It reminded me of the distruction of the Murrah Building in OKC, Ok. Its hard to fly on commerical air for me now. I have flown military air for so long I know the pilots and crew and have no problem with them because I do their annual physicals and know their capabilities. I have sorrow for the children and wives and husbands who lost that shoulder to lean, afternoon baseball, financial support and just someone to talk to when you need that support. I'll never forget that day for the rest of my life and will remember those who died heroicly. They are the real heroes of today. We in the military salute you for your dedication to life and saving life. As a medical member I dedicate my life to you and will strive to keep your memory implanted in my life and the lives of those around me. I salute you with all my heart and soul. The first time we got married, was Febuary 7, 1997, and the second time was August 21,2001. We were only married this time for only about two weeks, and were already separating. I was pregnant with our second child. I loaded up my car with as much stuff as I could, one night after having a very bad arguement. Then, that night my three year old daughter and I got on the road at about 11:00p.m. leaving Virginia Beach going home to Natchitoches, La. an 18 hour drive. I was only home for about three days when the tragedy began. I remember going to my mothers house one morning and my entire family was in front on the T.V. I thought it was very strange to see that because at that time in the morning, some of them would usually still be sleeping, especially my brother, he's a night owl. Then I turned around and looked at the television and saw that one of the towers were on fire. Like everyone eles, I thought maybe the plane was flying too low and it was an accident. Then, the second one hit. I knew then it wasn't an accident. My husband is in the military, so i called him to see how he was doing, because by then the pentagon was hit too. When we heard eachothers voice, we cried. He was crying of disbelief, and I was crying because we were going through this apart. The next day we talked about getting back together. Whatever we were argueing about was nothing compared to loosing a love one. There were so many people who lost their spouces. Not knowing that ,that morning was going to be the last time they saw eachother. Then there we were, ready to give up on soemthing that I'm sure so many wish they still had. Today is the aniversary of SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 and my husband and I are still together. I had a baby boy, we named him Gabriel. So many time today we have touch eachother and hugged eachother. Word had just gotten out that the World Trade Center was attacked, and that the EPA might evacuate. Once the Pentagon was also struck, the EPA decided to evacuate all employees. For me the tragedy was doubly painful: I was simulaneously mourning and accused. A native of Oklahoma, I recalled the reaction to the Oklahoma City bombing. Muslims in Oklahoma lived in fear until Timothy McVeigh was caught. My mosque was vandalized, and nearby mosques sustained gunfire. I joined the sea of people who took the Metro that day, while some preferred to walk because of rumors that the Metro could be a target. As I entered the Metro, a well-intentioned gentleman advised me to remove the head-scarf I wear as a Muslim woman. "No," I told him. He asked me if I knew what happened, and told me that crazy people might attack me. "Yes," I said, "I work in a federal building, but I will not remove my scarf out of fear. I revere God and God alone." Before entering, a Muslim man approached me. "Sister, you shouldn't travel alone dressed like that." Probably not, I thought, but what other option did I have? That day, the Metro was more crowded than I had ever seen it during rush hour, yet I noticed several hesitated to sit next to me, until finally someone did. Had I suddenly become dangerous? When I left, I ran into a stranger who cursed at me then screamed, "I'd hate to be you!" For the next several days, I felt I lived in two worlds. One comprised of my family and friends with whom I could share my horror at the loss of innocent life, including my own Professor Leslie. The other world consisted of strangers who stared at me in anger and disgust, as if I had somehow been an accomplice. For weeks, I hesitated over whether to smile or stay grim-faced, as either seemed equally ill-received. If I smiled, strangers might consider me happy for what had happened. If I did not, I could be guilty or threatening. I continue to pray for justice and compassion everywhere. As did Martin Luther King, Jr., I dream of a day when Muslim will not be judged by their appearance but by the content of their character. A frightening vulnerability that showed upon the faces of almost everyone I met. Some of my co-workers watched the tragic events take place on a television in the office. I remember hacking away furiously on my computer to send updates throughout the office, and to log on to the internet to get more information. Entering into websites that had live and updated news coverage was nearly impossible due to the traffic. When I was finally able to SEE the destruction for myself, a terrible sadness came over me. The sight of the people jumping from the Towers, and the flame and smoke, and the reports of the calls that came from the planes, the loss of so many beautiful lives. It was heartbreaking. I couldn't help thinking, "This will be another shot heard around the World...", it was obvious that this horrifying event would touch the lives of everyone on Earth. I felt so small. I wanted to help each and every one of those people. I knew that the best thing I could do is pray The Lord for recovery, and keep faith that, just as the advocates of destruction were busy that day, so were the disciples of The Lord and Saviour. During the most disturbing times in our lives, times where our very existence appears fragile, our desires insignificant, and our fears manifested, our faith is put under extreme duress and even the strongest of wills may need strength and support to endure such tribulation. I've found that the most everlasting source of fortitude, is The Word of God, and that there is no greater means of support than Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. No matter your religion, no matter what name you know him by, (Allah, Jehovah, Buddha....), his hand is never changing. So I offer to those who will accept, HIS word, that it may bring them courage, strength and comfort, as it has me so many, many times. When I found out what it was all about, I joined a group in front of a small tv to witness an unbelievable sight - the first building of the World Trade Center had been struck by an airplane. There was a lot of speculation about what could have happened. I said, "terrorism", without having any idea of who could have committed the act of terrorism - I just felt it couldn't be an accident. When the second tower was hit, that confirmed it for me and for everyone else. Then the images of the attack were played over and over again on the news. Every time I saw it, it was just as shocking a sight as if it had just happened. That day, and the days to follow was like living a bad dream, an unbelievable existence. Now, almost a year later, I think, what's next? What will a misguided group of terrorists do next to demonstrate their hatred for us? But with any apprehension comes comfort in my conviction that we will prevail. I believe this is a great country blessed by God, and that no matter what, in the end, good will prevail over evil. Tell us your story: Getting ready to leave the house Tuesday morning to see one of my clients for a massage therapy session, I heard an explosion which shook the house. First thought was to call Fairfax County to alert them, then thought a noise that loud would already have their attention. On the way to my client's house, I turned on the news and was horrified to hear that the Pentagon had been hit. Not until I arrived at my client's house did I find out it was a plane, and about the WTC as well. My client and I were both flight attendants for United, and were again horrified to watch the coverage of th 2nd tower being hit. I cannot remember when or what we found out about the Pennsylvania crash. We went ahead with the massage session with the TV on, and cried together as it became clear that at least one UAL flight waent down. We would later find out that we knew most of the flight attendants on both UAL planes, as well as some of the pilots. Neither of us was surprised at the attacks, as many of us had just been waiting for the inevitable to happen, and for the terrorists to choose the airlines they did: AMERICAN and UNITED. We are bonded by this sharing of the events as they occurred, and will never forget that day. I retired from United Airlines the following April 1st, 33 years to the day that I began my career. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001, I was sitting in a Board of Director's Meeting at my non-profit organization. We were about to go around the table giving introductions and welcoming the new Board members, when someone who had her computer on, alerted us that a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center Towers. I remember feeling momentarily stunned and then propelled into action to get to my telephone and locate my daughter and son-in-law as I knew they traveled through the WTC subway every day between 8 and 9 a.m. By the time I returned to my office, the second plane had hit. All of the under 30 staff were glued to the television acting very frightened as other sites were mentioned as targets--particularly those in DC. About the time the 3rd plane hit the Pentagon, our building--which is near the White House--was evacuated. Of course, the Metro was closed for a while and within an hour downtown DC was in gridlock. People whose buildings were emptied had no place to be except on the sidewalks. Suddenly, DC became like scenes from many disaster movies--people in a panic trying to make contact with family, friends and so forth. Traffic was at a stand still and airports closed. Taxis were immediately full and rental cars unavailable. Thankfully, I found my daughter was working from home and my son-in-law was safe as well, despite being covered with ash and debris as he fled the area. Our Board members who had flown in for the meeting took a variety of approaches to the transportation problem. One member paid a taxi driver several hundred dollars to drive him to Philadelpha. Another group bought a car and drove to Georgia. Several stayed with organization staff and some checked into local hotels--which filled up quickly. I am grateful that no one I loved was directly involved, however everyone is affected as we all now feel very vulnerable and are not sure where new danger may lie. In DC and NYC there are restrictions on our behavior/movement which were not in place before. Those of us who can see Ground Zero or the Pentagon every day are reminded anew of the day that made us all feel afraid for our lives. I have two hopes for the future. One is that this sense of patriotism and respect for the American values of freedom, democracy, individual worth are not forgotten as September 11 becomes less of a media focus. Second, I wish that those countries where individual life has little or no value are helped to join the rest of the modern world--thereby eliminating most terrorists groups who are convinced or who know from personal experience that life on earth has nothing to offer them, so they are willing to commit suicide and other acts of terror under the assumption that they will be rewarded with a better life after death. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was onboard a US Navy destroyer the morning of Sept 11th. We had gotten underway earlier that morning for routine operations and I was busy restocking my medical supplies and doing the daily routine business. I was walking back to medical with an armload of supplies when a shipmate ran past me and said "Doc, we are under attack!" and ran off. I dropped the supplies off in medical and went to the chief's lounge where we had a large TV. We were still close enough to land to receive regular programming and I arrived just in time to see the second plane hit. The mess was quiet at first and then all hell broke loose. We were all angry and upset and sad and just in disbelief that this was happening. My children live just outside of DC and my fear grew for them and their safety. I was able to see the first tower fall and I knew that we had just lost a lot of firemen and civilains. I was a fireman before I joined the Navy so I am still familiar with how things usually work. Just after the tower fell we went to General Quarters and the Captain came over the net and told us we were being detached and would go off the coast of Virginia to provide air support. We lost TV but had e-mail for a short period. My father (retired Navy man) and my fiance were my only souces of information other than what I could get out of our intel guy. I wish I could relate the feelings of anger and helplessness we all felt those days and weeks after this happened. We didnt get to come home to Florida until the end of October and it was only then that all of us learned more of what and how things had happened. Like everyone else, we were glued to the TV and waiting and watching the casualty numbers fortunately continue downward. Only a few months after that we were on our way to the Med to conduct boardings and search for contraband and terrorists. It wasnt much compared to what others have done. My thoughts are never far away from that day and I think of those we lost and those who took them away from us. I didnt know anyone lost on 9/11 but I still weep for them and their families who must go on. There is a song that asks "Have you forgotten?" and I hope that no one has or ever will forget that terrible day. God bless my brothers and sisters in the armed forces and the fire service that have given there all and will continue to do so as long as there are people inthis world with no regard for human life. I made it home to Atlanta from Manhattan late last night. Several have asked for my story. I realize it is one of so many, and long, but I will share it as a record of my experience. I flew up to NYC Monday night, for a 1 day visit with my customer at the World Trade Center tower 2. I had done work for them on a regular basis for the last year. I was to work with them on Tuesday, 9/11. I usually start work at 8:30am, but knowing my customers, they wouldnt show up in the lab until around 9, so I lingered over the newspaper a few more minutes. I took the subway to the world trade Center because I was staying at the Times Square Marriott. Usually I stay at the World Trade Center Marriott when there because it is next door, but decided I wanted to be near the theatre district in hopes of catching a show on Tuesday nite before leaving Wed morning. When I got off the subway Tuesday morning and walked to the WTC mall, people started hesitating and turning around. I went through the turnstiles to go into the WTC and heard people directing us to leave. "Don't run" they cautioned. I assumed there was a gunman or a bomber. I quickly walked back to the subway and up the stairs to daylight. Everyone was looking up and I saw there was a huge hole in one of the towers. I was in shock, trying to figure out which tower it was, and what had happened. Someone said a plane had crashed into the building. Debris was falling off the building and a huge cloud of smoke was billowing out of the tower. Someone described people jumping, and I looked away, not wanting to see. People just stood there looking up, and I just wanted to walk away. There was falling debris and I just wanted out of there. Then I heard a boom and looked up and there was a fireball headed for us. I ducked and crouched in the corner, then jumped around the corner of a building. Something flew overhead and smelled like famaldahide. I imagine it was jet fuel. It struck somewhere a block or 2 away. I asked someone, "What was that?". They said it was "the other plane." At that point I was totally puzzled, thinking it was an accident and that two planes had almost collided and instead crashed into the towers. I walked East for a few blocks, then decided to walk, carrying my laptop, back to the hotel. I heard people directing us to keep walking. My cell phone had by this time 5 messages on it, but I couldnt get through to call any of my family to let them know I was ok. I stopped at the Canal street station, paid my fare, and waited a few minutes. I rested a minute, but it was very hot there, and I decided there wouldnt be any trains coming from the WTC. I kept walking, this time to Chambers street, and heard a train running, so I ran down. I caught the next train to my hotel. On the train, I heard people talking, and one said it was a terrorist attack. I got to my hotel room and couldnt get through on either the hotel phone or my cell phone. The tv stations were all out. The hotel room had a high speed internet connection, and I connected my laptop, saw an email from my mom and some friends, and emailed them back to know I was ok. I finally got through on my cell phone to my mother and let her know I was ok, then walked across the street to McDonalds for some breakfast. When I got back, my family and friends and I created a chat room and shared our experience. I told them what I had seen and heard how scared they were for me. It was comforting for me to know that we were all connected at that moment. We even did an online hug. I saw on the news the buildings had crumbled, and heard from my family that the Pentagon had been hit. Like everyone else, I wondered if the world was coming to an end. There was noone around. I emailed work to let them know I was ok and asked if we were at war. I spent the next two days in Manhattan, which was the strangest I have ever seen it. Just seeing people was comforting. I thought about volunteering or giving blood but did neither. I talked to the maid about what had happened. There were very few people in times square, so I walked to Chelsea every afternoon. Tuesday only some of the restaurants were open I smelled the smoke, saw the zombie look on peoples faces. I imagine I was still in shock most of the day Tuesday and part of Wed. Wed I was able to have dinner outside in Chelsea, there were signs up urging people to be outside at 7 to show we are unafraid. At dark, people started lighting candles, and I stood next to a group of them for a few mintes, needing so desperately to feel the "light" through the pain of what had happened. I kept hearing in my head what a friend had written me after the attack: "See the light! See it in people's faces!" I was beginning to feel that life might actually return to "normal". I chatted with people on the internet and watched the news on TV. I spoke with friends and family on the phone. Manhattan island had been cut off, and it wasnt until Thursday that I really considered trying to get home. By Thursday there were signs NYC and times square were starting to wake up. I stood in line on Thursday and met 4 women buying tickets for The Full Monty. They had been in NYC a week on vacation, and shared with me the shows they had seen. I smiled for the first time since Tuesday morning. I ate dinner at a restaurant where my sister had eaten often while living in Manhattan. I went to the show and was sitting next to the women I had met in Times Square. An announcer before the show said the mayor had asked New Yorkers to get back to work to show the terrorists that life still goes on. They would not defeat us. He said the cast was grateful we were there because the work they do is entertain, and you need an audience for that. And they did do that, making us laugh for 2 hours in the midst of the pain and shock of the attacks. Some flights had started late Thursday, but by Thursday nite the NY airports were all closed again. I made arrangements to rent a car at La Guardia for Friday morning, and I took a cab there, rented the car, and drove to Philadelphia where I hoped to catch a plane to Atlanta. I called Delta and my travel agent from my cell phone and found that Delta had refused my reservation from Philly to Atlanta, so I drove the 16 hours all the way to Atlanta. I got in late last nite. Having been in NYC the last several days, I hadnt fully realized the impact the attacks had on the entire country. On the drive home, I heard the radio in small cities, and saw American flags on many bridges. I will spend this afternoon and evening with some of my family and hope to spend tomorrow with some of my friends. I know that all our lives were changed this week, and I hope this experience brings us closer together. I am still looking over my shoulder, and I imagine we all will for some time. I see the outpouring of love and sympathy for those who experienced such great loss as a result of these attacks. I hear the stories of the brave fire fighters who gave their lives saving others, the stories of the terrorists, the stories of those who lost their lives, and of those still looking for their loved ones. I hear the stories of looting, of telemarketing scams, bomb scares and fake internet sites. And I hear about everyone lighting candles. I have begun lighting my own candles again at home, and for that I am very grateful. I pray for strength, protection, love and understanding. For myself and for everyone. I was in a really good mood because I was just starting my 33rd year of teaching and I knew it would be my last because I had already announced my retirement. When the news of the first plane hitting the tower was announced on the radio I went into shock. For the past 25 years I had joyfully taken my advanced drama students to Manhatten for a week over Christmas to experience live theatre. How many times had we all layed on the cold cement and looked up between the towers to take amazing pictures. Even though I had dozens of the same shot from previous trips, it will still just as exciting each time to share this moment with my students. I have still been unable to pull out those photographs and look at them. In fact, I doubt I will ever visit my beloved New York again. I will never forget the terror I felt as I pulled into school and ran to the nearest television. I thought it best for the students to keep things as normal as possible so I continued my planned lessons but snuck to a TV between periods. Later my students told me how thankful they were I kept some normalcy on that horrific day. I feel so much sympathy for all of those who lost loved ones. Tell us your story: That morning a co-worker and I were listening to Howard Stern's radio show when he mentioned that a plane had crashed into the Worldtrade Centre. We didn't know what to think, was it a joke or not? More information came thru, the building was now on fire. My co-worker tried to contact his girlfriend who works in the WTC, unfortunately the phone lines were not working, he tried his cell, he could only leave a message on her cell. Luckily she called to say that she hadn't got to work yet. I tried to call my boyfriend in Queens, to tell him to turn on the TV and see whats happening on the news, no reply. We looked out of our 21st floor office window, downtown and we could see the plumes of black smoke billowing up into the sky. What was going on! We gathered into the conference room and put the TV on. We couldn't believe what we were seeing and hearing, yet another plane had hit, was the United States under attack? There were gasps,shouts of horror, when we heard the towers had collapsed. There were reports that more planes had come down in Washington and there were other hijacked planed still in the air. We were told we could go home, the bridges and subways had been closed,a colleague said I could go home with her, I managed to get thru to my boyfriend, who had been trying to contact me, the phone lines were working intermittently and I told him were I was going. I am originally from the UK and have been in NY for nearly 2years & the strange thing was my family & friends in England, could get thru easier than I could to Queens. They had heard about the terrible news and were worried and couldn't believe what was going on. As we walked Uptown, it was surreal, we could smell the arid smoke, we didn't notice any vehicles, there seemed to be no sounds coming from others on the street,we could see people in bars crowded round the TV trying to make sense of what was going on..But who could! Watching the events unfold on TV, it was unbelievable,it looked like it was a scene from a movie. As soon as it was annouced that the subways were running again, I left, all I wanted to do was get home to Andy. From the 7 line as the train rounded Queens Brough you can usually get a magnificent view of the Manhatten skyline, there were 2 buildings missing that day. It was the first cool day since I had moved up north from North Carolina to attend Seminary in Bethlehem PA. I was sitting in Old Testament class when someone ran in telling us that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. It was as if time stood still. Our class happened to have been in a Digital Learning Classroom, so we should have been able to pull the news up on the big screen TV in the classroom. When we couldn't, the class quickly moved to a room that is often used for worship. Immediately upon entering the room, I saw the second plane hit the World Trade Center. Although I saw LIVE in the corner of the screen, it still didn't feel real. It was as if I was watching the Bruce Willie movie "Die Hard" or something. The room was perfectly still, no movement, no sound. Here I was, 9 hours from the only home I have ever known in a room full of strangers watching the worst pain...the most devistation destruction I have ever seen...in a room full of people I didn't even know. We sat together for hours as we saw what happened in DC and in PA. We cried together, prayed together and just sat together comforting one another. Prayer services followed...the college and seminary had several prayer services a day for weeks. They helped, but something was lost that day...I realize now that it was my innocence. I was 32 when the terriost chose to strike out against America. That day changed my life forever! That day, this community became my family. I still mourn for those whose lives were lost. My soul aches for because of the hatred I saw that day. And yet my soul is warmed by the love I saw our nation show eachother in the midst of this pain. My fiance called to tell me that he heard driving to working a plane crashed in the World trade center. I switched on the Tv briefly and they were just saying it was an accident. So I switched it back. I never knew at that time that the second tower had been hit. My neice called to tell me that a plane hit the Pentagon. My fiance works at the Pentagon! I was frantic. I tried his cell phone, called his office, called his sectrary and got no answer. I was sick. I turned on the TV and stayed glued to it for 9 hours until I heard from him. He was late leaving the house that morning. Thank god for the alarm not going off. He was a block from the Pentagon and later he told me he saw the plane as it went over. He heard the explosion. he said that sound would haunt him the rest of his life. He helped with the rescue and looked for survivors. Tell us your story: On September the 11th our principal made an announcement late in the school day at our Middle School saying that there was a plane crash in New York and nobody from our town was hurt. I don't know why. When we got home we realized what had happened, and we had no idea that it was this serious. We had no idea that it was this serious. After hearing the announcement we hadn't though it was serious at all. Even more disgracefully after all the high school sports were cancelled for the day, our 7th and 8th grade football team decided to practice because according to the coach "it was safe". With the addition of my two hours of homework that day, there was no point that I was not able to let the whole event sink in and think about it. The next day in school, we barely discussed it. Kids aren't stupid, they deserve to know whats going on inside and outside the classroom, and they should have the right to talk about they're feelings in a time like this. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My mom got me a job working in her DoD office in Crystal City at the beginning of the summer. I didn't paticularly enjoy it, but the money was good. I tried to make the best of it by taking advantage of as many free computer training classes and government information sessions as I could at the Pentagon and Navy Annex both a few thousand yards from the building we worked in. One beautiful Tuesday morning I was dragging my feet. My mom and I took separate cars because I had a class at Mason right after work. I kept finding little things to distract me. The weather was so perfect that I seriously considered ditching work and hanging out by the river all day. I remember I was really intent on writing down the lyrics to this song I had just thought up. I parked in the garage under the building - even though it was more expensive - because it was already 8:45 and I had to get my butt to the office. As I snuck into my cubicle and logged on to my computer, hoping nobody noticed how late I was, I heard one of the gruff retired military guys jokingly ask a buddy if he had seen any low flying planes outside. Since Reagan National is practically across the street, I thought nothing of it. A reminder popped up on my computer screen... Information Session - Pentagon 9:00. Aw Crap! I said out loud. It's like 9 now. I'll never make it. Man... I'm gonna be in deep shit for missing this one. Why the hell was I so late? I don't even know what I was doing. Whatever, life goes on... I was thinking to myself and I began preparing for a meeting with the Colonel later that morning. The crazy temp who is always sending those chainletter type emails around came in and sat down rambling something about the end of the world and the plane crashes and some other stuff. I kind of blew her off. Then I went over to my mom's office to say hi and see what was up with all the talk about airplanes. She had just heard about it herself. We all gathered at the receptionists desk with the usual joking and gabbing and not realising the gravity of what was taking place right above our heads. We heard the big screen TV in the conference room on the 12th floor was tuned to CNN so about a dozen of my coworkers, including my mom, went up to check out the news - anything to get out of work, right? I stayed behind to prepare for my meeting... I didn't want to leave because I knew the Colonel would be in any minute, he was a very busy man, and if I wasn't there when he showed up I would be in trouble. One of the guys had a radio in his office so I stayed and listened. That's when I heard about the second plane. Terrorists we all agreed. None of us had seen pictures yet, we were picturing in our minds little prop planes like the one that tried to crash into the white house a few years ago. We started taking bets on what terrorist group was responsible. Bin Laden was the most popular vote. One of the retired military girls said, "It makes me wish I was still on active duty so I could go over there and kick some ass" Just then Angela, the receptionist, came running in. She told me I had to go watch the TV. I had to see. It's unbelievable. I argued that I had to wait for the Colonel. She said she'd cover for me, but I couldn't miss seeing what she had seen. So I got on the elevator with another woman from the office. We rode up the two floors chattering with curiosity - what's everyone making a fuss about? As we got off the elevator we ran into the Captain. He asked where we were going. We told him and he said everyone's gone home - the pentagon's on fire. I giggled said, "don't even joke about that." And as I pushed past him he said, "go look out a window" I skipped down the hallway to the conference room. It was eerily quiet except for the CNN reporter's voice. The conference room was deserted. The 8 foot screen was gray... no it was smoke. This is so much bigger than I ever imagined, I thought. Then the word Pentagon was at the bottom of the screen. I screamed... It can't be true... It can't be. I yelled, "Is anybody here?... Anybody?!?!" Oh God, where's my mom? I thought she was here! She must be looking for me! As I waited an eternity for the elevator I began to pace back and forth one of the men waiting with me said, "Don't panic, that's what they want us to do." There's a they out there that is trying to hurt us. Who are they? What will they do next? I couldn't breathe on the elevator... what if our building was next? The security guard was securing our floor when I got there and he didn't even know why. I found my mom, she said, "Get your stuff we're going home!" I said heck yeah we are! I grabbed my keys... but before I could leave, I hesitantly walked across the office to the window. What I saw sent a chill down my spine. It was so dark, so black... billowing for miles. This is the biggest thing that has ever happened to me. My mother and I got in our separate cars and I followed her home. As we were leaving Crystal City... less than 15 minutes after the Pentagon was hit, the sidewalks were swarming with people and men in black suits and black SUVs were everywhere, securing buildings and evacuating people. The traffic was so slow, but everyone was nice to eachother - no road rage on Sept. 11, 2001. I kept trying to call my dad to tell him we were OK but my cell wouldn't work. At every stoplight my mom and I would wave at eachother in support. Listening to the radio, I heard the newscaster say that the towers had fallen and the true gravity of the situation kicked in. As we turned the corner at Potomac Yards, I was once again facing north and the darkness filled my view. I started screaming and crying hysterically. So this is what evil looks like. I had to pull over. My mom did too and she got out of the car and walked back to check on me. I rolled down the window to tell her I was ok and the stench of burning flesh and fuel filled my nostrils. I cried out again. We were at least 5 miles from the crash site at this point, but we couldn't get away. As we continued on I finally got through to my dad. When he picked up I couldn't talk. I just kinda said, "Ummm..." I was so happy to have gotten through, but so scared that this might have been the last time I ever talked to him. I let him do the talking and he asked me where I was and if I was ok. He said he was glad I called because he was about to come down there and look for me. Then he told me to hang up the phone and concentrate on getting home safely. It took an hour or so, but we eventually did. I don't think I've ever been so happy to see my house. My mom and I just hugged eachother in the driveway for a few minutes. There were about 10 messages on the answering machine already. People checking on us. I called everyone who knew where I worked. There was a lot of crying. I live less than a mile from a major army base, and they had vigilant fly overs every 10 minutes or so. I didn't sleep for 3 days. I watched the replays on CNN and it made me naseous. These are people dying. My cousin was supposed to be on one of the planes that hit in NYC, but changed her flight plans at the last minute.
