I watched those news reels in horror and disbelief. I didn't personally know any of those whose lives were taken that day but they were Americans and therefore my brothers and sisters. I can only imagine how their friends, families and co-workers felt and must still feel to this day. My heart went out to them then and still aches for them now. I am proud of the resolve of our nation and it's president that we would not and did not let this attack go unanswered. For all the hurt, I was so proud to be an American that day and in the days following. If anything good can be said to have come from the ordeal it is that I have been better able to put into perspective what truly matters and what is important. My most treasured gift, my little girl, became even more precious to me that day because I was reminded of how quickly things change. I never did, but especially now never will, let an opportunity to hug or kiss her or tell her I love her pass me by. I was trying to get the mail out when it came over the radio about the first plane. I thought how could a pilot hit the WTC on such a clear day. We all went to the swing room to check out the TV. There it was the second plane striking. For the first time I did not feel safe in my own country. After the devastation, I was happy I did not know one person who was killed. I began to feel bad because like it or not those were my fellow countrymen who rode on the bus or train that I do every morning. I felt empty all of these emotions. So in days to come I read the poem Footprints. It made me feel better. When I see it on the news the stories, the devastation I change the channel. In order to heal I must move on but I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT FOR ONE MOMENT I WAS NOT SAFE. We are strong we will move on. One day at a time. It may feel as if we can't, but we must for our children. I have a dream since I was a little kid to go to US, and mostly visit NYC and just the World Trade Center. I am so yeah I dont know how I feel but mostly sad. For all theese people. And their familys. Who hade someone who was hurt or killed in the terror attack. The big houses just dissapeard so easely... and so many lifes just gone. The twin Towers was a symbol of the great american pride for me. Now their gone....and the big huge dust cloude reaching for the sky..... I was sitting home and my bf was calling me and sade: U have to watch TV NOW! The World Trade Center is damaged.. I turned on BBC World and CNN and saw the destruction... so horrible. And the suddenly it collapsed... I just sat there and did nothing. And fellt thata I wanted to help. But how would it look like if I catching a plane to go to NYC and help? I was so helpless.... felted so bad. My tears was falling down and yeah it was a horrible feeling. I cant describe it. And for the one who did this? I cant understand how a person could do such a bad thing to the great nation in the east......Just cant understand that. Tell us your story: After dropping my children off at school, I had to go by a Printing business to pick up completed jerseys for my son's football team. I was talking to the owner and a neighbor of mine that works next door. The radio was on, and we all heard about the first plane. I didn't think anything more than it was an accident and I remember thinking, "What a shame..." I got in my car and started driving to work. I was listening to my favorite morning show which immediately started talking about the plane crash and then the second plane. I hurried on to work so that I could watch the television. After the third plane crash, all I wanted to do was go get my children from school. I started praying. I started calling my husband(who was out of town on business in MexicO) and I told him I loved him and to hurry home. We couldn't function much at work the rest of the day, just prayed. I prayed that if the end of the world was coming, that my children would not die without me. The feeling was helpless, hopeless, and extreme sadness. My 7 year old son, who never watches anything but cartoons, wouldn't quit watching CNN. He was shocked and couldn't sleep. My 12 year old daughter hid in her room and said she wished the world would be normal again and that she didn't want to hear about it anymore...she wanted normalcy. Money problems didn't seem so bad, just trivial(along with other worries in life). I am truly thankful nobody in my family was hurt, but the world does mourn...we were ALL directly involved. We had to got to the library to cheak out books for the grade requirments.Than our librarian statred to tell us we were going into war we had been attacked! Tell us your story: I'll never forget the phone call I got at 7 in the morning from my friend, telling me to wake up and turn on the news, we were being bombed. I didn't understand and she had to repeat herself several times before I was convinced that it wasn't a dream. I soon learned that we weren't being bombed but we were being attacked in our own buildings with our own planes. I quickly changed and drove over to her house so I wouldn't be alone. We spent the morning and afternoon fixated on the TV watching the horrific events of that morning being shown over and over. We sat in shock and spoke very little except to say "I can't believe this is happening". While the events took place far from us; we still felt vulnerable. If this could happen there, it could happen anywhere. For the first time I felt like our country wasn't safe. I called as many loved ones as I could to tell them I love them and make sure they were ok. The days after the attacks all blurred together as a mass of sadness and hopelessness. Moments of encouragement were found as my work observed the moment of silence and when the President spoke to our country. Over the next several weeks and months my feelings of patriotism and love for my country and my president were stronger than they had ever been. I was ashamed to be around people who had anything negative to say about it and everytime pictures of the attacks would be replayed at work or at a friends house, I would hold back tears. I don't know why this event effected my life so profoundly. It happened across the continent but it felt like it happened right next door. I didn't lose a brother or sister, my father or mother; but all I can think of is, I could have. It's been a year today since the attacks and our country and myself have been forever changed. We can no longer lie to ourselves that we in America are untouchable or indestructable. It's the coming of age of our country. We can no longer be innocents letting devastation effect the rest of the world but not us. We have been forced into growing up as a country and hopefully growing together. It is a sad thing that it took so much tragedy to join our nation together. On this first anniversary, as we all look for ways to honor the memories of those who lost their lives to terrorism I wonder how many will be successful. The only way I think we can hope to honor them is to learn from what has happened. We are a nation that is strong and powerful, but most of all, we need to be a country that is united. When we stand together as a people, embracing our differences, loving our neighbors, and respecting our freedoms; it is only then that we truly show the world we are a great nation. I hope we WILL let terrorism change our lives. That what they intended to hurt us will only make us stronger and those who lost their lives, did so to make sure we never forget how lucky we really are. I was in my second period class and my teacher was absent so we had a diffrent teacher she told us that she herd on the radio that the Wolrd Trade Center was hit by two aircrafts. During Lunch I went to the security desk and they had the radio on and I herd that the World Trade Center was hit by two plains. After that I decided to walk around the ground floor and seen a Televison on but it was a spanish channel and it was on mute I couldn't understand what they were saying then they showed the footage of the smoke from the World Trade Center. I walked to the front door and seen students leaving with there parents because they were worried. After lunch they told us to all go to the office if we lived in a certin area of Queens. So I went to the office and they told us that we had to walk home with all the people that lived close to where I live and we all walked home. I got home and looked out my window and saw smoke by the World Trade Center once stood. About a half hour later my mom came home and hung out till my dad got home. We were worried about how he would get home then we found out when he got home he walked over the 59th Street bridge. We watched televsion and saw tower seven colapse right before our eyes. Two hous later I went to bed and so did my parents. This day is a day that will live in infamy just like Pearl Harbor. We all know the horrid events that transpired before our eyes. The stongest emotion I remember was an overwhelming love in my heart for my son. I held him close all day. I also called my mother in Virginia. I wanted nothing more than to go and be with her. Just to be able to call my Mom made me extremly upset, because I knew there were so many children that would not get to talk to their parents ever again. And on this day the one year anniversary it makes me thankful for my son and my family, and a deep sense of sympathy for all the victims and their loved ones. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was in Macroeconomics class all morning that Tuesday, ironically learning about our strong economy. No one had come by to tell us the news, and I obliviously walked to chapel, something I did every weekday at 9:50. One of my friends came by and grabbed my arm and said, "We're under attack; the U.S. is under attack!" I had heard mumblings in the hallways, but was unable to make out exactly what had happened. Concern grew in my heart. I wanted someone to tell me what had happened. Some students stood in the street weeping, others looked stunned, while many others hurried to the chapel to find out more. I just wanted an answer. When I had found my seat, I looked around at the student body. Everyone was quiet. Not one whisper could be heard. I held my questions and sat in silence, marveling at the mood in the auditorium. 5,000 students gathered in Pensacola Christian College's main auditorium for what normally would be our chapel service, each one silent. Dr. Joel Mullinix, head of our Public Affairs department, humbly walked to the podium. He didn't stumble over his words or make any introductory statements. He spoke soft but strong words trying not to add or take away from the impact that those very words would have on all of us. He simply stated the facts as they were at that time. I sat back in my seat, unable to grasp this horrible reality. We weren't attacked, at least not in the way I had perceived outside. We, the American people, were attacked on our own soil. Civilians, normal people living normal lives were targeted by a nameless enemy. The only question that came to mind at that moment was "Why." Our pastor, Dr. Jim Schettler, came to the podium. He stood in silence for a moment, and then began to speak gentle words of comfort. He answered the question I had asked in my mind as best he could. (These are my words. I am trying to summarize what he said that day.) Evil will always be present in this world, and as long as this country stands for anything that is good, it will be a target. As far as the lives that were lost, God knew every name. Not one life was overlooked. After his brief words, he called on each of us to pray for those trapped, for the families of those who were lost, for the rescue effort, and for our country. He shared II Chronicles 7:14. "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." He reminded us that this verse meant us as God's people. We were to humble ourselves and pray for healing, and God would hear us and heal our land. We all prayed together as he led. Each heart aching. Each soul pleading with our God to help those in need, and to bring justice to the men who brought this terror upon our people. He then asked for all who had family members or close friends in the towers or the Pentagon to come forward for further prayer and possible aid. The rest of us were dismissed as we watched hundreds of our fellow students walk forward. Again the auditorium was silent. Not one whisper could be heard. I went immediately to the student commons to watch the news and to find out more of what had happened. Watching the footage of the attacks was devastating. I could not control the sorrow. I sat and wept for hours as I watched the television and prayed for those people and my country. After the initial stun and heartache was over, righteous anger began to well up in my heart. I wanted justice. I wanted the man or men who were responsible for this horror brought to their knees. I was encouraged by our president as he projected the same holy anger as I felt in my heart. I was proud of my country and the way our people pulled together to help one another. I was grateful to live in this land filled with brotherly love. I was more aware of each freedom that I enjoyed, knowing that the cost for my freedom was life. The lives of those who died to bring that freedom to a new nation, the lives of those who have fought to keep those freedoms in our history, and now the lives of those who died on September 11th so that our country could awake from it's prosperity induced slumber. I believe that freedom will never die. As long as this country stands for what is right and good, we will always be targeted but never defeated. I love this country, and I would gladly give my life to protect it. I know that I am not alone. There are thousands even millions of people who feel just like I do, and these people will never allow any act of terrorism or war take that away. If we have to, we will pick up our weapons and fight the enemy ourselves on our own soil, but we will never, as long as there is breath in our lungs, lie down and give up our precious land or our freedom. Looking back on that day exactly a year ago, I remember where I was, and think how fitting that I heard it in the chapel of my college. I think, also, of how fitting it was to have begun my sorrow with prayer. The fear is gone now, as well as the pain, but the anger still lingers, needing justice to finally pass away. I am thankful for a God who hears every prayer. He heard mine that day, but not just mine, He heard every prayer as our nation came together with one voice. I believe that His presence could be felt across our land, comforting and healing those in need. I hope that each life that met death that day was prepared to meet the God of the Universe, and I pray that each and every life that was affected that day will seek Him while He may be found. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Eight months ago today, I left my house and headed for work like any other day. I work about 15 blocks from "ground zero". I usually get in early and turn on the two tv's in my dept. Around 8:50AM as I was watching the end of Good Morning America they interupted saying that a plane had hit one of the towers. They were reporting from the news helicopter. My co workers nwere starting to file in now and we were all just watching. What was happening? Just blocks away. I went to the phone and called my mom who works on Long Island. It was still early enough and you were able to get through on the phone lines. I was relaying to her what the tv was saying. All of a sudden there was an explosion. Because of the camera angle on the tv I did not realize that it was a second plane. Within seconds the TV confirmed that it was a second plane. I had been standing, I dropped to my chair , and screamed into the phone, "my God mommy another plane hit the other tower" At that moment i knew, my coworkers knew, the worlod knew, this was no accident. Some of my co workers went to the roof of my building, there are no words to describe what they saw. My building was evacuated but we were sent back in after a while. No one knew quite what to do. Then the towers started to come down. We sat, blocks away and watched as this unfolded on tv. The plane had hit the pentagon by now I believe and the other had gone down in penn. I think back now on how we all reacted. I had to keep calling people, try to get through, to connect. Others sat rivited to the TV, others just worked on. We were all in shock. I was comforted by the fact that my brother n law who is a nyc firefighter was on vacation in hawaii. He was safe. But so many weren't. So many innocent people lost there lives. Many walked home that day from Manhattan to the outer boroughs. There was this errie silence in the streets of midtown, people just walking, many covered in soot, wearing masks. Very different from the streets of downtown, where chaos reined. Everything about that morning is etched in my mind. What I ate for breakfast, what I was wearing. We all changed that day, an innocence was lost. It has been 8 months today and life goes on, but I see that morning in my minds eye every day. We will never forget......... NEVER! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My name is Linda Brown and I live in Wichita, Kansas. September 11th started out just like any other Tuesday. My two oldest kids drove themselves to school, and my eleven year old son decided he was going to ride his bike. I started getting ready for work when I heard the devistating news about one of the towers getting hit. My sister called me on the phone, and we watched the news together in disbelief. She was so frightened about what was happening. She kept saying she wanted to go to school and get her little boy. I kept telling her he'll be fine and I finally convinced her to leave him there. It was about 3:30 that afternoon, my son's school was letting out. I work across the street from his school and on the other side of the intersection is a gasoline station. The traffic was horrible, the gas lines were about twenty cars deep. Everyone thought gasoline was going to skyrocket in price. I went out to the intersection to help the children get across the street safely. Then I went back to work. It wasn't five minutes later when my son's friend came running into the shop, yelling Joseph has(my son) been hit by a truck on his bike. It was total chaos, Joseph was rushed to the hospital by ambulance as a level one head trauma. Later that night, the man driving the truck came to the hospital. He told us he had never driven on that street before. He was just trying to avoid the gasoline station. Joseph spent two days in intensive care. He fractured his skull, broke his nose and orbit bones in four places. Along with alot of road rash. If I would have listened to my sister,and taken him out of school that would'nt have happened. I can look back at it now and say we were the lucky ones. A lot of people were not. Nothing of this scale has ever happened ever on the United State's soil at least. This experience has changed my view of many things especially airplanes and tall buildings. When I first heard about what happened, I was in third period, my English class. At about 9:30 AM when I walked into class, my teacher, Mr. Bellonte, had CNN turned on. Even though the plane had crashed a while before, I was at band. None of the televisions in band are ever turned on and we were not notified. It showed on the news one of the twin towers with a whole lot of smoke coming out of it. It was the scariest thing that I had ever seen live on the news. They were saying that many people were still in the building. The worst thing to see was little bodies flying through the air. I don't know what I would do in that situation, but I am pretty sure that I wouldn't commit suicide. They were saying on the news that a plane had crashed into it. I couldn't believe it. Mr. Bellonte turned off the television and said that it was probably just an accident. He said that we could watch what it was all about that night on the news. Then we had class. Next, I had Earth Science Lab. We did a short lab while we were watching CNN. They were showing a replay of what happened earlier. All of a sudden another plane crashed into the other tower. I couldn't believe my eyes. Later that period, there was news that a plane had also hit the Pentagon. Next period, the first tower collapsed. The planes turned out to be hijacked. That was also the period that a plane had crashed somewhere in Pennsylvania. Later we heard that it was on a path directly towards the White House. After that period, we watched the news in all of the following periods. How could somebody be so evil and kill all of those innocent people? The thought was incomprehensible. There are many terrorists in the United States that are living normal lives and are ready to become a terrorist. They are just waiting for their time. I think it is because the third world countries are just jealous of everything that we have here in the United States. They have nothing and we have everything. That day, all of the sporting practices and events were cancelled. That was very good because nobody would want to play on a day like that. It would not be fun at all when you know that this is the day that the worst terrorist attacks happened on United States soil ever. Although there might be a worse one to come. A worse one probably will not happen because I think the United States will shoot a plane down if there is another chance of a hijacking. The passengers would die anyways. The U.S. would probably agree to shoot it down if they can save the people in the buildings. It is the kind of event that will be put in textbooks for the rest of history and never be forgotten. Children will learn about September 11th just like we learn about Pearl Harbor. For now on, I will never feel as safe or secure in an airplane or a tall building again. This is same for many people. When I fly on a plane, I will not take a direct flight. The planes that were hijacked were full of gas for a direct flight. There is not much that the United States could have done about it and that makes it even more scary. Tell us your story: It was about 9am when one of my coworkers said that the radio announcer was saying that a plane had hit the World Trade Center in Manhattan. I ran into their office and heard the story being repeated, then they announced that another plane had hit the Trade center! I called my husband in West Chester, PA to let him know to turn on his radio, then I called some friends who worked at the airport to see if they knew what was going on. I also tried to call my brother, whom I thought was working at the Trade Center and kept getting the "all circuits are busy" message. I then tried to call my sister on Staten Island, to see if she had heard from him and to find out what was really going on. I could not get through, so I sent her and my brother emails. She called me in tears, saying that it was being said that it was a terrorist attack and she couldn't raise my brother either. We were both frantic with fear. There was a small television set out in the dock area and I watched with growing disbelief, as the planes crashed into the towers. Then I saw the towers start to crumble and I ran back in to try contacting my brother once more. He finally called me about 11am and I had never heard him so upset, not even when my mother had died. He said that he had been assigned to work at a building near the Trade Center just that week and he had heard a loud crash. He looked out the window and saw a lot of small white objects floating past. He thought the city was having a ticker tape parade and thought no more about it, until he heard the second crash. He ran outside and saw the towers on fire and at that point his company evacuated the building. He ran to the Staten Island ferry but the boats weren't running on time so he had to wait a long time for the boat. He was one of the last to be allowed on the boat and he stayed on the back area. He looked back at Manhattan as they left the slip and was horrified to see the towers collapsing! He and I had watched the Towers being built, we both went to school in St. George and worked in Manhattan. I remember shopping there during my lunch hour when I worked on Wall St. It was a great tragedy, all those precious lives lost due to a fanatics crazy cause. I was in eighth grade at the time and was just coming out of civics class when I heard everyone going on and on about a plane crashing into some building. So I went to my drama class still very interested in this news I was hearing and yet again people were running up to me and telling me about it. My drama teacher explained to us what had happened and said ?there was a plane that crashed into the World Trade Center that?s located in New York.? Well no one really knew, or at least I didn?t know, what the World Trade Center even was. He turned on the TV and I was shocked! There were people running around everywhere and screaming, people crying, it was just a complete nightmare. I myself was starting to get a little worried because my uncle works at a bank that was located right down the way from the Twin Towers, but I kept my cool and then we all continued on with class. The school didn?t want us watching anymore of the news on the Terrorists attacks so that we didn?t all get worried. Though things leaked out and gossip was flowing all through the halls of Washington Irving Middle School. Then I heard the news, the worst news someone could hear, ?A plane crashed into the Pentagon!!!?, I was horrified and didn?t know what to do. My dad works in the Pentagon and I was so scared that something had happened to him. I was crying and one of the guidance councilors pulled me into this room that was filled with other students that had heard the news too. They all also had parents that worked there. After about an hour in there I got clamed done and went back to my regular classes of just going to lunch and all of my classes. During 5th period I got a not from the office, and it was from my mom, ?Dad is okay, love Mom?, I was so relieved. Overtime my reactions about the attacks have changed and I don?t think about it as much. It use to be that I would think about them everyday as if the scenario would just keep re-playing in my mind. My life has changed by these attacks in so many different ways because of all of the security measures that everyone has to take because of these attacks. Everywhere you go there is some sort of new security device, especially when you go to airports or a military bases. Along with the attacks of September 11th some other events that can be related in importance to it are events like the bombings of the U.S. embassies located in different areas of Africa. All of these things have hurt the nation and devastated many and I hoe in the future thing of this nature do not occur again.
