Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Some time in 1987 and also in 1989, I have visited the WTC. I remember touching the building, to feel how it is to be close to a skyscraper and what kind of structure it is. In tne 1987 visit, I was having my first camera with me - Asahi Pentax K1000 with a 80-200mm Zoom lense and with my American friend I went to the top most floor - to the observation deck. I took photos of uptown and downtown - whenever I look at them I get a surreal feeling of the perspectives. I also have a photo of a side view of one of the towers; the reflection of an adjacent building from its windows. More than not seeing the building anymore, I just cannot imagine the plight of the people who were in that building on that fateful day. I just feel very sad for them; not having a way out of it; away from the scorching heat and for many mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters, not to mention kids who lost their loved ones. Same for the people who were in those airplanes. It taught me one lesson - how fragile our life is and how mindful wwe should be about the clear and present danger to life, every minute of it we live. I hope those people as well as the fire fighters would never face such a death, if they would ever have another life. I would be more than happy to share my pictures in digital form with anyone. I would have no problem donating those photos of the WTC buildings to a museum or to the US Library of Congress. I guess when I visited the WTC on both those occasions, I thought of the day I would bring my wife and kids to New York City and show them twin towers. Now that it will not happen, I would be happy to let go of those photos. May those souls rest in eternal peace. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The most important thing that was on everybody's mind before the attacks was securing the beer suplly for the TC-1 lock down. The same typhoon that wrecked havoc on the island 5 days before had turned around an almost full 180 degrees and was threatening the island once again. Unfortunately, the typhoon brought more devastating news than broken trees and flipped cars. I had just gotten off the phone with my Japanese girlfriend, explaining to her that even though work was cancelled tomorrow, I was very tired and I was going to bed. Lights were off, my dormitory room door was locked, and my T.V. stayed as silent as it did for the past two hours. I did not have any idea of the chaos that was being broadcasted on both the AFN channel and the local Jap-station. If I had my way, eight hours would have past till I realized what had happened. My "lucky break" came five minutes later after I had closed my eyes in attempt to fall asleep. My girlfriend called, demanding that I turned on the T.V. I naturally objected, citing the importance of a military man's sleep. A second later, I grew enough brains to ask her why. Her response is etched in my memory forever; "You're not going to believe me if I told you." Turning on the T.V., I saw what many around the world was seeing: a fire had broken out on the WTC. I don't know why but I assumed everybody made it out and now this is the horror that the news was trying to embelish for their own self-fish, award-winnig reasons. I walked outside of my room and down the hallway, noticing that it was unusually quiet, even in someplace as isolated as the top floor of my building. I ventured down to where I had friends down on the second floor but nobody was around. I then went to see if our units newbee was asleep in his room on the third floor. He was wide awake and asked me immediately if I saw what happened to the WTC. I told him that it was just another building fire. He told me I was grieviously wrong and showed me on his t.v. what everyone else was now seeing; both towers in smoke. He told me that the second tower was hit right before everyone's eyes. Everything I had learned in anti-terrorism class became my intuitive consciousness and I was in search of my deployable communications team sleeping in the dorm to tell them they need to get their deployable packs ready just in case we were needed at a moments notice. Other things I ended up doing that night was preparing the dormitory for anti-terrorist measures and trying to contact anybody (family, friends, coworkers, etc... to either explain the situation or to find out more. We never went into TC-1, complete lock down of the base due to typhoon conditions, but we stayed in Threatcon Delta for what seemed the longest time. On top of that, all AF personnel on Okinawa were not allowed to go anywhere for five months. Although it was hard, my girlfriend stayed true to me and waited. I worked at a jewelry store, and I was in my car on the way to work when over the radio I heard that a plane had hit the WTC. Thinking "What a horrible accident!" -- I changed the radio station to try and find out more information. The second station was broadcasting that a second explosion had happened, possibly a second plane, and it was at that exact moment that I knew it was no accident. When I reached the store, the other girls and I were glued to the radio. That's when we heard about the Pentagon, and I immediately called my mother. She was crying, and I was fighting tears. Then, we noticed other stores in mall were closing, and found out that a plane had gone done in the Somerset area [which is probably between 50-100 miles away]. We were so scared and uncertain of what was happening! We hurried and closed up shop. It wasn't until I got home that I saw the horrific images of the plane crashes and the towers collapsing!! I stood in amazement at what I was seeing!! I remember thinking "What kind of world I am bringing a child into?" In the meantime, I begged my husband to come home [but he couldn't], so I remained on the phone with my mother and aunt -- nobody saying anything but needing to be in touch somehow! Today, one year later, I still get a feeling in the pit of my stomach when I hear a fire siren! I used to enjoy the sounds of planes going overhead in the summer, and now I find myself watching them out of the corner of my eye -- just in case! I have never had such a frightening or sickening feeling in my entire life as I had that day and the days to follow. Now, I pray my daughter never has to feel the sheer horror that was that day! Tell us your story: I woke up that morning and turned the TV on to ABC and I saw the news camera on a street with a view of the World Trade Center and a whole bunch of people running away. At first I thought they were tearing down the building, like other buidings and stadiums you see on the news. But then the reporter said that a plane flew threw the tower. I just thought a plane accidentally had a malfunction and dove into the tower. But evidently I was wrong. Saudi hijackers were the culprits. Off to school, I went and had a forum to discuss what happened that day. I came home from school, turned on FOX News Channel. That's when I became interested in politics. I thought to myself, "There has to be some political doing here!" There had to be a Government who was behind this with Osama bin Laden. Is it Iraq or is it Saudi Arabia. As I was doing stretches in my living room, I heard the voice of the kid next door screaming "Planes have hit the World Trade Center." It sounded completely crazy. It was unreasonable. After a bit a turned on CNN and saw that it was true. I saw the images and then went running. As I ran in Prospect Park I thought that the world has changed. Nothing will be the same. I got home and turned the TV back on. I was confused as to whether I should go into work or not. Planes had hit the WTC and I was still thinking of going to work. My mind wasn't working on all cylinders. It took a phone call from my wife to tell me not to go in. I had showered, gotten dressed and even had my metrocardin hand. She told me to stay at home and finally it dawned on me that this day was different from all other days. I stayed at home and watched TV for 15 hours straight. My teacher had walked into the lab room for a few minuites and when he had come back into the room he quieted everyone down. He said that a plane had just crashed into the world trade center, but no one beleived him. The day before he had someone walk into the class room and stage a fight to prove a point. We have a television in the lunch room so I went to see. When I got there the other building had been hit. and then if that wasn't bad enough the Pentagon was next. I got up at 6:00 am like I normally did, took a shower like I normally did and ate my breakfast like I normally did. But that day was far from normal. Just as I was leaving for school, I heard a report that a plane had crashed into the first World Trade Center. I thought it was a joke and ran over to the TV to find myself watching the tall tower with fire and smoke coming out of it. It was unbelievable. It had to have been a mistake. As I watched a reporter talking about what could have happened, I saw another object flying towards the second tower. Then there was more smoke and fire. My mom told me I would be late for school if I didn't hurry, so I picked up my backpack and hurried off to school. I must have left my brains at home because I couldn't concentrate at all that day. All I could think about was that horrible image I had seen on TV. To make things worse, we weren't allowed to have any of the news channels on. The principal of my school was worried that we would be scared, so we were left in suspense for the whole day. After school I rushed to my TV and my eyes were glued to the screen. I don't think I turned of the TV at all that day. Sometimes I wasn't even paying attention. I just had it on in the background as a comfort. It was just unbelievable. Thousands of people died just because they, just like me, were doing what they normally did everyday. It was a Tuesday morning around 6:15 a.m. and I was trying to wake up to go to school just like any other usual day of the week. I overheard my mom and dad talking about the World Trade Center and how it had something had just crashed into it or something had bombed one of the towers. Then I remember my mom yelling something because another tower had been hit. It wasn't a bomb that had hit the tower, it was an airplane. I was in complete shock. I knew this was not any accident. Someone had deliberately planned this to occur, but why? I repeatedly asked myself that question all morning at school. Then I found out that there had been other attacks at the pentagon and another one trying to get to the White House. Watching the news, I realized that this event was actually a terrorist attack and people across the seas were celebrating in their streets because they had completed this terrible tragedy. Still, I am still overwhelmed of the fact that those people used our own airplanes as weapons to harm us. However, this terrible event united our nation as one. Tell us your story: I was sleeping when my mom came upstairs to my room, she was crying and was so pale, i asked her what was wrong, and she said alot of things i couldnt understand at first, she was shaking and crying so hard, i didnt have a clue what she was talking about...i hugged her and wouldnt let go, and i turned the tv on in my bedroom, my sister was a nurse in manhattan and we could not get ahold of her, for hours and hours that day we spent calling everyone we knew in new york, not knowing is the worst. but finally we recieved a call from her boyfriend at the time he is a Dr at one of the hospitals there as well. he had finally gotten through to us on one of the hosp. phones, he told us that we wouldnt believe all the damage that has been done, that we wont be able to talk to her for along time, no one can talk to anyone, the phones are down and he lost her for awhile couldnt find where she was then that he had found her, i dont even know how to begin to explain that day correctly i can not find the words, to describe the chaos and the fear, to express my sadness for all of those that did not make it, and to express how grateful i am that my sister did make it. It is now 5 years later and i feel all of those emotions still as strong within me as that horrific day...and the war and the terrorists i just dont understand why people have to be so hurtful so full of spite and vengence. will the war ever really end? i fear it will not, because after 5 years it seems to me that we have gotten no where still, that we are running in circles chasing our tail so to speak, and still we are losing the ones we love and hold so dear. may everyone that was lost on 9/11 and all of our troops that were unable to come home, rest in peace, and know that i at least thank you for all that you have done from the bottom of my heart. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My name is Shirlean and although I didn't loose anyone close, I feel the lose as if they were all dear friends. My heart goes out to all the families and friends of victims of 9/11. A girlfriend and I had gotten up very early to go to the beach to look for shark teeth, a popular hobby down here. We had spent about 3 hours just walking and looking, oblivious to the whole world. When we got back to the RV park, we noticed that several of our friends seemed to be tense and sad. This is when we learned of the devastating events of the day. Our day went from joking and fun to absolute disbelief. The rest of the day I was glued to the TV and watching the reruns of the planes hitting the towers. It shook me to my soul and all I wanted to do was hold on to my family. I called my daughter and Mother in Kentucky and we talked for what seemed to be hours. We all cried together and asked why anyone would want to kill so many innocent men, women and children. The children....our future, who will never feel the warmth of the sun on their faces or see a beautiful sunset. It touched my very soul and made me grateful for my family. The only comfort I have, is that I know they, the mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and friends, are all in a better place now and are safe and never have to feel the hate of terrorism again. When my friend came back on the phone, said turn your tv on, at that moment I saw the WTC in fire and smoke, only moments later to see the other plane crash into the other tower. O?Connell, Jr. The World Trade Center belonged to everyone and yet She belong to me alone. In my world I never referred to Her as the ?Twin Towers? or ?WTC? just ?Trade Center.? I?ve watched her grow over the years. Always changing while she was growing. She was always was dressed up for every occasion. Always bright and cheerful no matter what the weather was. And, oh, at night She would shine so brightly that She took away your breath! I always took pride in being so close to her. She probably never noticed me watching her grow over time in radiant splendor. She was as alive and vibrant as any entity that ever existed. She was part human too! Her cellular make up was that of all the human beings that moved within Her day after day. I thought I would never in my lifetime see Her come to an end and die. I was there that terrible day when She stood mortally wounded. Her wounds bled Her human cells of which I witnessed five of them perish -- four men and a woman. I knew that after she sustained her second wound this was no accident and someone was trying to kill Her! I stood looking out the window nineteen floors up right across from my Beloved at 140 West Street. I stared in awe at the gaping, jagged wound in the first tower. There were great red flames and heavy black curling smoke pouring out. (I did not fear Her coming death because it was said somewhere that She could sustain a direct hit from a 747 airliner and still stand). Then as I watched I became filled with grief for the families and friends left behind those who had perished from the impact of the plane that crashed into the tower. When I saw the first man fall from the opened wound and perish right before my eyes, I was stunned into disbelief at what had happened and that what I was seeing was not happening. As I saw the second man fall, I knew this was real and was happening and unfolding right there in front of me and there was nothing I could do to stop it. Then as the third man was falling and before he perished, I quickly blessed myself making the sign of the ?Cross? and prayed for his soul. I did the same for the fourth man and the same for the fifth person, a woman. I reached up as high as I could and placed my hand upon the pane, as if I could stop the others from the same fate, and called to those that I could not see to stay back from the edge and they (fire/police) will come and rescue them. At this moment I became very angry because I was absolutely powerless to stop this and raise my eyes that I could see over the tower and into the blue sky and yelled out loud to God, ?SEE! THIS HAS TO STOP AND IT HAS TO STOP NOW!? I had to leave my building. We were told to evacuate. When I got to the street, I looked up to the tower again and just stared. I was around the area of the Brooklyn Bridge when I heard another loud noise and turned to see the Second tower fall first. The tower made a sound as if a death rattle, leaned forward, toppled while letting out its last breath and crashed to the pavement below. In watching the second tower fall, I knew the prayers that I had issued for the ones remaining that they would be rescued were not answered. Also my prayers for the people who I saw fall at the time did not seem to matter. Rescuing them had become academic. I felt that eight thousand lives died that day and part of my life too. The grief that I felt became unbearable. It wasn?t for those who just died or for myself. It was the grief, and the loss I felt for all the loved ones left behind. I believed then and there that no one had survived. I prayed for all those souls in one single prayer. The ?Act of Contrition.? I prayed that prayer for all who just died , that God would take them straight to heaven. While I silently said this prayer, it seemed that thousands of their voices joined mine at that moment and were gone with the last ?Amen.? I must let it be known that not even once did I want revenge on the ones who did this terrible deed. I knew in my heart that revenge was not going to bring back all those who had just perished or bring back my ?Trade Center.? I could only hope and pray that we would not do the same and attack blindly and kill the innocent with the guilty ones. If we did, we would be no better than the ones who just killed innocent people in those towers. It has now the third week and still I am grieving. Still weeping. But today when I had decided to write this I stopped and listen to my heart and realized that even though I had stopped crying on the outside my heart has never stopped weeping. I had wept outwardly for those that had perished and for their love ones, but I did not realize that my heart was mourning and weeping for my ?Beloved Trade Center.? Yes, I would want to have the building rebuilt. More out of spite than anything else, just to be able to go to the top of the new buildings and thumb my nose at the killers of my world and be the first to dare them to try it again! But, as in life when your beloved is taken from you, it can never be replaced. No matter how magnificent a new comer is. I pray for a new center and that it will be protected from all harm, but She will never take the place of my beloved ?Trade Center? of my world. I will call her by a new name in my new world as the ?Trade Winds? of the World. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was a little after 8 am and I had just arrived for my first Chemistry lab of the semester. We were using laptop computers that were connected to the internet via the university network. As I have done on every morning I checked the news of the day on my.yahoo.com the first thing I saw was an article for a plane that flew into the WTC. My first thoughts were that it was a tragic accident and I thought it was a small private airplane. As I scrolled down the page I saw another article for a 2nd airplane that flew into the other tower. I immeadiately thought it was a terrorist attack. I still thought it was small planes though. Due to the intense volumes of traffic attempting to peruse the articles. My class started and I was concerned but not shocked as I thought they were small private planes that would not cause intense damage. My mother called me about 30 minutes later to tell me that there had been a major attack on NYC and the Pentagon. I promised her I would be home as soon as I finished my lab assignment. My partner was my friend Chris as soon as I hung up the phone I told him about the attacks. We proceeded to work at a faster pace. As the people in my class began using the network printer the news began filtering around the room after I mentioned the attack to a former navy officer that had decided to return to school. Soon my professor disappeared. She returned 10 minutes later telling us the university had been shut down along with every other university and college in the state. We wrapped up our assignments and left the building. Everyone was talking about what was happening. Rumors were abundant. It took me an hour to make a 10 minute drive. The campus police were directing traffic out of the university. Everyone was trying to leave at once. Thousands of cars were winding around the roads of the university with only two exits to the community. Once I arrived home my parents did not know where my brother was. He was a member of the Air Force and was supposed to be getting off work around the time of the attacks. My thoughts immeadiately turned to my friends that were attending college in New England. I had friends between NYC and DC. It took two weeks before I learned that my friend Angela was safe. She had been attending NYU. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I could not hardly believe what I saw on the "Today Show" as I was getting ready for work. As I was getting myself ready, I saw on TV, that the world trade center was on fire, then when the second plane approaching I couldn;t help but wonder, couldn't the second plane see that the towers was on fire, then it too went crashing, into the second tower. I was in shock. I couldn't believe what I just witness on television. As I hurried to get my self out the door, I had to make a stop at one of the hosital's to pick up a volunteer package on a fundraiser that was being planned for the upcoming week. In the lobby, one of the nurses came to the volunteer desk and announced that another plane had cashed into the pentagon. I was breathless. Fearful Thoughts of War, what is to happen next. All I could think of was to pray, pray that where ever my adult young children were, that they would be safe. As I left the hospital to go to work which was 32 miles away at another, hospital in Arnsas Pass, I called the Administration Office, asked if they had been following the news. Everyone listen to the news that day, wondering what would be next. At the end of the day, I went to the fabric shop, looked for materical that reflected red, white and blue. It was to my amazement that other people there were wanting to hold on the the glori of our american colors. That nite, I made over 300 ribbons, I could not stop sewing until the last ribbon was made. I can still hear the sound of the sewing maching, thinking of how something so little as a ribbon could be bonding to all the people I work with and the people unknown to me in New York and across the country. By mid-morning all the ribbons mader,were given out, as one of the volunteers help me pass out ribbons, she broke out in tears, she had lived in France when the war broke out when she was a teenager and the fear and memories of that war surfaced and all I could do was embrace her and whisper, we going to be alright, we just have to Trust in God, and we must be strong for our country, that's the american way. Also that morning we had a ceremony in front of the hospital, one of the adminstritive directors ask that I make a red, white and blue wreath (soon it will be one year & it still stands)as we held our ceremony, a vet driving by on the parking lot stops his truck, gets out (age probably 70ish) watch as I placed the wreath on an essel and saluted the wreath.
