Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just gotten out of the subway station on Fulton Street 5 minutes after Tower 1 had been struck. I started walking towards Maiden Lane which is about 2 blocks down from WTC. I kept trying to dial on my cell with no luck. I decided to stop at the Federal Reserve Building and ask someone what had happened when no more than 5 minutes later Tower 2 was hit. The sound was like nothing I had ever heard before. It was the most terrifying thing I had ever seen. I don't remember hearing the plane coming in, but I will never forget the sound of that impact. I don't remember how I got to my building which is 2 blocks down from where I was standing, I just remember walking into my office and asking someone what had happened, that's when the realization hit me that we were getting attacked. I don't remember very much about that day, things are coming back to me almost 2 years later that still make me sad. Mostly, I think about all those people who lost their lives that morning and pray they are at peace. I still walk by there and it seems like it happened yesterday. You never forget that feeling. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I work in a small blood center in Upper Michigan; we average 20-25 donors per day coming through the blood center. On September 11, 2001, we expected to see an increase in donors because everybody wants to help when a tragedy occurs. The outpouring of donors was overwhelming!!! We extended our normal hours of operation to try and get as many donors through as possible. At about 10pm, we finally told the rest of the donors to come back on 9/12. September 12 ended up to be a repeat of September 11; once again we had a long line of blood donors waiting up to 3-4 hours to donate. Our two day total of blood donors was over five hundred. A big thank you goes out to all of our volunteers, both donors and helpers. We all came together to work toward a common goal. We truly were "united" within the United States. I am news director at WUFT-TV, the PBS station at the University of Florida. I was in Washington on September 10th and 11th to train at the Associated Press Broadcast Center at 1825 K Street, NW for a new computer system we purchased from the AP. I had checked out of my hotel and walked the few blocks to the AP building and entered the reception area about 9 a.m. A number of people were standing around looking at the bank of four TVs at scenes from the World Trade Center. I called my station to see what we were doing to localize the story in Gainesville. After making sure things were on track there, I went back to the AP training room to continue working with the ENPS newsroom software. Within a few minutes our trainer noted a bulletin on the AP wire that a plane had hit the Pentagon. Since I was only a few blocks from the White House, which I figured might be a target, I decided to become a reporter again at that point. So I left the AP building and began walking toward the White House. There were already hundreds of people out on the street and vehicles in bumper-to-bumper traffic. As I turned down 17th Street, people huddled around cars listening to radios. Many were shaking their heads and holding their hands over their mouths in disbelief. As I crossed a street a man yelled from his van that the World Trade Center had collapsed. I couldn?t believe it?it didn?t seem like that could happen. As I got closer to the White House I tried calling my station on my cell phone to report on the situation. I couldn?t get through. My first thought was that the terrorists had bombed the cell phone towers. I kept trying to get through, since I did see some people on cell phones. I reached the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and 17th Street, across from the Old Executive (Eisenhower) Office Building, still trying to get through on my cell phone. In the intersection uniformed Secret Service officers had their backs to the White House, keeping an eye on the small crowd on the street corner (some were journalists with cameras, others just gawkers). The officers had closed 17th Street on the west side of the EOB and were also directing traffic away from the area as quickly as they could. At that point I noticed Mary Matalin, an aide to Vice President Dick Cheney, try to cross 17th, but an officer refused to let her inside the secured area ? even though she flashed an ID and was a recognizable official. In the distance, over the EOB and the White House I could see smoke from the Pentagon. Two fighter jets also screamed high overhead, somewhat reassuring, but another indication that our nation?s capital was under attack. Shortly after that, several uniformed Secret Service officers started yelling for people to move off the corner and farther down 17th away from the White House. At that point I was able to get through on my cell phone to the station. The assistant news director of WUFT-FM, Dave Schermer, recorded about three minutes of me on the phone at the scene. You can hear Secret Service officers in the background, very adamant about moving people even farther down the street. They did not say at the time, but I imagine they believed that Flight 93 that eventually crashed in Pennsylvania was headed for the White House and they were trying to get people out of harm?s way. After hanging around at Pennsylvania and 18th for awhile, I decided there was little more I could do as a reporter. I had no camera and was not credentialed to report at any of the federal facilities. So I walked back to the AP building. I met up with my station?s tech guy, Arlindo Albuquerque, who was also training there. We decided to end our training (in fact, the AP had sent our trainer off as a messenger). We were scheduled to fly out that evening, but flights were grounded everywhere. Fortunately, Arlindo had a rental car which he arranged to keep to drive back to Florida. We packed up our computer gear and borrowed a dolly; an AP staffer helped us take our gear to the parked car about five blocks away. As we walked along K Street, we made faster progress than the near-standstill traffic trying to get out of town. When we finally got in the car, we nudged into the traffic and headed for Georgetown, the fastest exit we figured from Washington. I heard a ?whump, whump? and feared there had been more explosions from another attack. But soon a radio reporter said it had just been sonic booms from military jets. What normally would be a ten minute drive, turned into an hour-and-a-half ordeal. We finally made it to the Key Bridge crossing into Virginia, where we got a clear view of the Pentagon down river and two fighter jets circling above. In the Virginia countryside going down I-95 one man draped an American flag from an overpass. As we headed back to Florida we listened intently for any news; after what I had witnessed in Washington, I couldn?t believe the reports that Flight 93 may have been targeting Camp David. We stopped for the night in South Carolina so we could see President Bush address the nation. I watched with disbelief as the video of the attacks replayed?then before the President?s speech, watching a replay of representatives and senators singing God Bless America on Capitol Hill, tears welled in my eyes. I have since thought many times about the brave souls on Flight 93 and silently thanked them ? for they may have given their lives to spare mine on September 11th. Someone had heard that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. The T.V. in our break room was turned on and everyone packed in there to watch it. It has affected the economy and interest rates are at an all-time-low which has caused me to work a lot of extra hours over the past year. That is how it has affected me. I finally got back in an airplane in August 2003, without trepidation. But I do feel a lingering anxiety since the WTC disaster that manifested itself in a weird way. They've torn down an existing building on the Penn State campus to construct a larger, more modern one. After demolition began, and while skeletal parts of the old building remained standing, as I drove past the site every morning on the way in to work I'd feel the adrenaline start to pump and a twinge of fear hit my stomach. Just seeing the partially demolished building brought back the same visceral reaction as when the twin towers fell. I've been back to NJ many times since 9-11 but still cannot bring myself to look at the NYC skyline or visit the WTC site. Even writing about it now makes my heart beat faster. My family was staying at a friend's house due to a house fire that gutted our home. It worked out well because they were on vacation in Turkey. My three year old woke me up from his nearby crib. I looked at the clock and remember thinking I was getting a late start. I turned on the TV. My eight year old had watched it last and left it on channel 29. Strange movie, I thought when I saw what was on. Paying little attention to it, I turned the channel. It took but a second and the disbeliefe set in. How could that happen? Switching to CNN, I sat for the next two hours, barely moving. When the first tower fell, I felt a thud in my heart. When the second fell, I knew my heart broke. And so it was that the world changed. We saw the worst in people and the best, side by side, each soon to be before a higher power to be judged. We came together as a nation in our shared grief. 9-11 opened our eyes to a world that too many of us ignored. It is my sincerest hope that the U.S. does not again sink into the thinking we are not connected to the world as a whole. (We are number one, just not the only one!) Kerch when a boy in our class named Ricky walked in ad said, "A plane just hit the World Trade Centers in New York City!" So my teacher Miss. Kerch turned on the television to CNN and we watched it for the rest of that class period. In my earth science class what we all saw was plane crashing into one of the world trade centers, and then as the whole world was concentrating on the world trade centers another plane hit one of the sides of the pentagon. Then all of a sudden out of nowhere the south tower of the trade canter collapsed. A few seconds later the north tower collapsed. After that the wall on the pentagon collapsed. That day I was really sad because my cousin works in the US treasury at the pentagon. That day she was supposed to work in the same place where the plane hit the pentagon, but luck fully that day she was rescheduled to work in a camp in Washington D.C. away from where the pentagon was. Another thing I saw on TV a family a wife, daughter, and sister that were looking for this man they searched all over for him. They kept going back and forth past the world trade centers looking all of a sudden the daughter screams, "DADDY!" and she sprints over to him and gives him a huge hug. One thing I thought was heroic, and sad at the same time was This one little boy and girl I baby sit for, there father is in the US army reserve and he was in NYC helping clean up the world trade centers. When I saw the towers collapse, and heard the stories of eye witnesses I cried for the people who lost their loved ones and the ones that got out safely. That night I went to my congregational meeting at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses where we received a special assignment to begin handing out any tracts or magazines, or just share Bible scriptures with people in our neighberhood to bring comfort to them. Soon, we learned of our brothers and sisters being allowed into Ground Zero to bring a message of hope and comfort to the workers there. We may not believe in saluting the flag, but we do believe in people and bringing anyone and everyone we can comfort from Jehovah. The date 9/11 has seared into my brain the scripture Ecclesiasties 9:11 where it says, "I returned to see under the sun that the swift do not have the race, nor the mighty ones the battle, nor do the wise also have the food, nor do the understanding ones also have the riches, nor do even those having knowledge have the favor; because time and unforeseen occurrence befall them all." Although that scripture has the parallelism, the next one staples down the true feeling Ecc. 9:12 "For man also does not know his time. Just like fishes that are being taken in an evil net, and like birds that are being taken in a trap, so the sons of men themselves are being ensnared at a calamitous time, when it falls upon them suddenly." I believe that these scriptures can remind us that God is not responsible for these horrible things that have happened. My daughter was only a few weeks old and sleeping in my arms. So obliveous to what was going on in the opposite side of the country. A friend of ours had called to comfort us, but we had not turned on the tv yet that morning. we thought she was crazy or playing a joke on us. To our worst fears we did turn on the tv and the news was posted everywhere of this awful nightmare. A year later, Sept. 11, 2002. My fellow associates at walmart dressed in red, white, and blue or had shirts with flags. It did not matter what race or color we were we all got togther in the morning and sang the national anthem underneath our flag hanging so proudly. My husband came into the bedroom and woke me up and said, "There is something on TV you will want to see". I went into the TV room, and stared at the television. Finally, I said, "Is that New York??" I was uncomprehending. The pictures I was seeing were shocking. The first views I saw were taken from across the river, and it looked as if the entire island of Manhattan was on fire. My mouth hung open and my eyes were full of tears for hours...... In 1963 I was watching Pete & Gladys on TV, keeping an eye on my baby in her playpen, and making cookies in the kitchen, when they interrupted the sitcom and said President Kennedy had just been shot. I ran out of my apartment in shock and fear and told my neighbor, then rushed back..... In 1968 I watched Robert Kennedy give his victory speech in LA, then went to bed as he walked off-camera. In the morning, my husband's clock radio came on and I heard...what did I hear?...Why were they replaying President Kennedy's death? But no, it was Bobby Kennedy, another Kennedy, dead...... A few years ago I was reading in the living room, my husband was watching TV. He came into the living room and said, "There's something on TV you might want to see", and I went in, and there was the tunnel in Paris where Princess Diana had just been killed. The media brought all of this news. Because of the immediacy of the media, although I am from California, we are all of one town when these things happen. May God bless us all. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a veteran and retiree of the armed forces (Army). I am also a doctoral candidate at George Mason University and and an adjunct instructor in government as well. I also work full time - providing planning and exericise and wargame development for the Joint Chiefs of Staff - located in the Pentagon. I was in the building on 9/11. It was a terrible and confusing day. When we were outside of the building after being evacuated, we foulnd that we could not communicate - cell phones did not work, due to system overload. We were also told that more planes were possibly inbound - remember we were over 20,000 people standing outside near the Potomic River, surrounded by multi-lane expressways and no where to go - it was scary. What i want to tell you, however, is that while many Americans would feel helpless and unable to do anything, I was afforded a unique opportunity to contribute. You see, for years i have been studying and lecturing on mobilization and crisis management. Immediately after the attack (that Night) I was asked along with an Army Colonel, a Military Lawyer, and an Atty from the Justice Department to draft a declaration of national emergency. It took us 3 days and nights (working 24 hours a day) and on September 14, 2001, President Bush signed the document. He immediately ordered the Reserve and Guard to active duty and invoked several other militiary and economic measures needed to provide the legal basis for the emergency. What is amasing is the fact that I am not a federal employee, nor was I recalled to active duty, nor was it within the contractual agreement I have with the Government to plan exercises. I did it out of love for my Country and a sense that it would provide the President and the nation with the legal tools required to respond to the crisis. Soon after I found myself back at Mason, attempting lead a discussion about the attack with my students in a state and local government course. Tell us your story: I was getting ready to leave for work, and was watching "Good Morning America " like I do every day,,, and all of a sudden Charlie Gibson was watching this plane that hit the building and he could not believe what he sore, and neither could I! I was so shocked, I called my husband and son in Columbia, Tn. to tell them to turn on the TV. It was a personal tradidy,,,,,,my niece in Long Island, her husband was in the fire dept, the hazardous dept. and I immediately called my cousin to find out if she heard anything about Dennis Scauso. Turns out he was one of the first to go there with his dept........It has been one long horror story,,,,, they never did find him, the only thing they found, was his helmet......He had a wife and four children.... They will never be the same. My niece is still not and never will get over the loss. They were childhood sweethearts... I hope this story helps someone else knowing that we all have felt the hurt and the sorrow of the families involved. Someone came out from the tennis center's office and told us that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. We immediately went inside to watch the TV. The instructor said he used to work at the WTC and that the towers would survive this accident. When I got home, my 18 year-old son informed me that one tower had collapsed already and the other was falling as we spoke. We were in a state of shock. He told me that his father, who worked not far from the WTC, had called to say he was alright and was on his way home. We didn't hear from him until four or five hours later. He had walked from downtown Manhattan all the way uptown to the 59th Street bridge. He, and many others, walked out of Manhattan and into Queens this way. While crossing the bridge, they saw fighter planes fly overhead. He thought we were at war. He walked to his mother's house, where he finally called again. On 9/11 we were supposed to be in the towers around 8:00 am, it was a vist to the towers. I was really anxious to visit them, i wanted to look the amazing city of NY from the sky. Around 7:30 am, we were ready to go in a school bus. But something was wrong, the bus didn't start its engine. we were late, and sad cause' maybe that day we were notgoing to be able to reach the towers. the bus driver kept trying to start the engine..but it was dead. suddenly the headmistress of the school came running and desperate, telling that something Terrible happened..as every one must know...9/11. I was so shocke, i had goosebumps, my brain was freezed, i was kind of lost, away from my family in a foreign country, it was the most weird sensation i've ever felt..i think GOD helped us that day and didn't let the bus start the engine.. We rarely had any time together and we loved to snuggle. Instead of the dreamy slumber I anticipated, I got a call from my sister, Michelle, at about 8:30 am. She was frantic I turn on the News. She kept telling me the World Trade Center was hit by a plane. I thought she was totally joking, and even said so. But, I heard the urgency in her voice, and the total disbelief. The News confirmed it. I remember waking my husband with the same tone in my voice my sister had when she told me. My husband was sitting in the couch while I paced the room talking with Michelle still on the phone. Michelle was off on a long rambling tangent of information when I notice the smoke looked different for a second. I could not fathom what I was seeing - The building was going to collape. Interupting Michelle, I state the obvious; "Michelle, the building falling down!" I remember saying those words over & over without believing it. "The building fell down." We both go silent in horror. I must say I have an exceptional imagination. It kind of runs in the family. All I could think about was the fireman running up the stairs and the plethera of people trying to escape. It hurts my heart to think about it. It takes so much effort to not to think about all those people; the ones trying to escape down the stairwells, the ones traped above the flames having the face the enevitable, the fireman who knew they were climbing to thier deaths, yet, still they climbed on. It pains me the most when I think about the babies born after 9/11. I just had my first child in June, and I cry for all those who will never know thier daddys; except as a hero of 9/11. A small consolation for an entire lifetime lost. In conclussion to this story, I received a call from my sister, Michelle, at the very same time on the very same day one year later. We will always remember that, though we were not in the same room, or the same city, we spent the day together, watching the most tragic event of our lives. It's now a tragic tradition. My thoughts were of the coming week when I would begin training as am opthalmic assistant in the same office. I was to quit wearing my reception uniform, and start wearing scrubs, and I would get a raise. It was a time in my life that was a very big deal to me. On the morning of September 11th, I was at work sitting at the Check out window. Just after the second plane hit WTC, my office manager came over to me and said that her husband had called her and said that 2 planes had hit the world trade center in New York City. An accident, I thought, and surly my manager was mistaken. What was the chance of 2 planes hitting the WTC. I made her repeat herself 3 times before I actually believed her, and realized that 2 planes hitting WTC was not an accident. President Bush was in our state visiting an elementary school...........in Ft. Meyers, I think............and it was said in the office "get him out of here" because we were afraid it would bring terrorism to our state. The president's brother, Jeb, is our governor. "Get him out of here too" we said. Before the morning was up all of our patients, doctors and employees knew of the incident. No one talked of anything else. No one wanted to work, and no one cared when they were called back into the exam room late. I called a patient back to administer a test. We were in the exam room only half an hour. When we came out, someone said to me that a 3rd plane had hit the Pentagone, and it was said that another was on it's way to the Sears Tower. The thought of the people on the plane flying to their deaths............knowing they were going to die, made me sick. As I filed charts, I couldn't get the idea out of my head. Then the fourth and last plane crashed in Pennsylvania. All flights in the United States were canceled and those which were in the air, were rerouted to the nearest airport. Rumors were flying around about the possibility of other hijacked planes, and it was said that as we spoke they were headed to other national landmarks. My office manager gathered our Eye Care staff together and said that in the event that our town were attacked we were to all go to the optical lab for shelter. Then she said a paryer for the souls of those who had died, and for the safety of those who were in danger, and for those who had lost family and friends on this day. Our office stayed open on September 11th, but many businesses closed in our town. Down Town Tallahssee, where all the government buildings are, was evacuated. We were only a few blocks from down town. Early on in the day Al Quaeda was fingered as suspects. It was said they were 99% it was Bin Laden. When I got home the first thing I did was turn on the TV. My television was old, and on a good day, if I pounded on it I could get a really crappy picture with sound, if I hit it on it's side right with my fist. On that evening, as I turned on the telly, I said to myself, you better work. I gave the television a good hard bang with my fist and got a reception as clear as a brand new television. That was the first time that day that I actually saw with my own eyes what was going on in New York City. I was shocked, and crying, seeing the panic and fear of the people. I was glued to the TV. I forgot to eat, and I forgot to go to bed until very late. By the afternoon all airplanes in the U.S. had been accounted for, and I felt safe from anymore terrorist attacks. I had faith in our government to protect us. That night I saw the President's grim face try and assuage our fears, and assure us that we would bring those respocible for the attack on our country to justice. I had no doubt that we would. Our President was a Texan for God's sake. Everyone knows that Texas is the wrong place to be caught for murder in, so I knew that Al Quaeda would get their's in a very short time. The next day, the topics of conversation were the same. Some folks said why didn't the people on the first 3 flights, that crashed, fight the terrorists the way the ones on the Pennsylvania flight did. I reminded them that in the 80's there were quite a few hijackings, and all that happened was that people sat around until the demads of the terrorist's demands were met. If you did what you were told, for the most part, you surrived. I don't think any American saw the magnitude of these Hijackings to be what they were until after it happened. By the time the Pennsylvania flight was heading to it's death, the people on board knew what their fate was going to be. They knew they were going to die, but they questioned just how they allowed themselvs to go down. They were the first to stand up to the terrorists, and the first casulties in the War On Terror. As the days went on all anyone could talk about was what had happened on September 11th. But things began to go back to business as usual. There were some differences. A few nuts called in bomb threats to some of the government buildings, and the staffs were evacuated. Before Airports opened, if there was a noise that sounded like an airplane, people would stop in their tracks and look up in the sky. Even after flights resumed, I would look up in the sky when a plane passed by, to see if it was flying to fast, or if it was flying straight, or doing a nose dive. It was several weeks before I could see an airplane and not think "terrorist attack" Happily, Wall Street opened up again. And everywhere you looked there were American flags, and signs that said God Bless the U.S.A. Instead of avoiding eye contact, I smiled at strangers on the street. They were afterall my fellow Americans.........regular working stiffs like my self. I felt safe in the hands of my governement, so my main worry was about the racisam against anyone who looked Arobic, that would sprout up. Allthought I did hear a few ignorant remarks from people, for the most part, there was none in my town that I saw. But something else happened to me too -- I think more often about those thousands of military personnel who lost their lives in all of the world and civil wars in years' past.
