After the attacks I called her immediately at her office. The fear in her voice was evident as she was being evacuated from her building. A few days later as she was able to return to her office it wasen't before a mile bus ride (because they could not park near the building) and being searched. Her daughter, located in Phoenix, was evacuated on 9/12 from a major office building due to a bomb threat that turned out to be real. Then as I attempted to put my business life back in order I discovered how many of my clients had offices in that building and people they knew were missing. This day changed my life in so many ways but the most important...I find my family is closer and material things just don't matter so much any more. So, in the midst of all the horror..take that terrorists...America is strong, we feel but we bounce back and it will be stronger than ever! May God Bless Each and Every One of you! Tell us your story: I was at work that morning, working on a deadline that had to be met that day, when my boss came in and told me that 2 planes had crashed in the World Trade Center. Since I had no access to a television, I thought that maybe it had been an accidental crash of two planes near the Trade Center. Then the next thing I knew, someone told me that a plane had hit the Pentagon. I knew then that this was not an accident. I tried to get on the Internet to get any information that I could, but it was useless. The company that I work for is a hotel management company that owned, at the time, 2 hotels in NYC. I tried to call them to see if everyone was alright, but I couldn't get through. In my despair, I e-mailed them hoping that maybe they would respond. In the meantime, my best friend, who also works for the same company and one of our co-workers were on their way to an appointment at the Pentagon! Luckily, they had a late start and missed their 9:00 am appointment. My best friend had just discontinued her cell phone service the previous day, so we had no way of contacting them. I tried to keep my mind on my work to distract from the events, but I could barely function. I finished the presentation that I was working on and went home early. I felt physically ill at that time, but was no where near as ill as when I went home and turned on the television. When I saw the first plane hit the towers, I burst into tears. I cried all that evening. When I went into work the next day, I was afraid of what I would hear.(at this time, I still had no idea what had happened with my best friend!) Of course, she came in late that day, but when I saw her, I threw my arms around her and told her that I love her. My heart breaks every time I think of the tragic events of 9/11/01. Last week, I went to Ground Zero for the first time with my new husband. I was overwhelmed by the show of support and love there. My hope is that everyone feels the same way we felt that day for as long as we live. Maybe then we can make the world a safer place. I understand what Diane means. That those warm, calm days in mid-September in New York City bring back memories, thoughts, images of a day some part of us wishes we could forget. Five years. It's been five years but even as time passes the images, the feelings remain with me, though a little tarnished, a little more vague as distance from September 11th grows. This year, today, I feel ravaged, and lost. My feelings with each anniversary have been vastly different. Immense sadness; hopeful; enraged; fearful; adrift. I didn't know anyone who died that day. Instead, amidst the turmoil, the sirens, the fear that death was imminent, God sent me comfort in the form of a new friend, Michelle R. We were incredibly lucky, Michelle and I, if one believes in luck. My Rector Street building across from Trinity Church shielded us from the Trade Center plaza, and so kept us one large step from most of the horrors of the day. But I had seen the piece of airplane logo fly past my window, on fire, had felt and experienced the resounding boom of flight 11 striking the first tower. Today that sound lives somewhere in my memory, hidden in corners of my psyche, elusive. Co-workers of mine, as did others when they heard the news, went in search of the plane turbine that had landed somewhere in the park, but came back grim-faced at the trauma of seeing bodies and remains along the West Side Highway where they'd been flung. J, K, & M had been walking along when the second plane flew directly over their heads and into the second tower. One man described to me, 'the streets slick with blood'. Another, the vision of a body strapped into an airplane seat, decapitated. There were horrors, real horrors silently borne by witnesses to the unimaginable, secrets shared only through quick glances, eyes meeting eyes and seeing into the soul. Returning to work later in the fall was experienced as an anchor, a gift and a terrible burden; desperate people, all of us, with desperate feelings and visions we couldn't shake. Risk management, our jobs. Getting up every morning to the smell of smoke, the sting of ash, our mission. Just one more subway ride, one bagel and coffee, heads down running past the Missing flyers and firefighter memorials. Just one more day, and then we'll be okay. Okay never comes. September 11th lives in our cellular memory; in the whine of an airplane overhead. in the films of previous decades where the Twin Towers stand forever straight, unharmed, magnificent. in fall leaves, that moment in September juuuust before the weather changes, stays a hint too warm, as though the world, as though Time stands still in a breathless hush, just one moment longer. Many years ago (the 1990's), when I lived in San Francisco, I had a terrible nightmare from which I awoke, heart pounding, sweating though the room was cool. In this dream I lived in New York, was in an immense building that stood right on the shore. I watched, paralyzed, from a top floor as an enormous tidal wave grew and grew and grew until it hit the building, hit the windows from which I watched with long watery fingers, clutching grasping at what lay within. I've never forgotten that dream; now, I don't think I could. Today, September 10, my heart will mourn. Tomorrow I will put away sadness at a day I cannot change and celebrate my son's eighth birthday. I'll try to keep the sadness from my voice, will smile and laugh, just for him, as I've done every year since 2001. But when the day is through, and the party hats have been put away and memories catalogued, I'll take a few minutes to remember, one more time, who I was then. Tell us your story: 'The Day America Cried' 'The Day America Cried' On the morning of September 11, 2001, the day started out as just an ordinary day, everyone rushin off to do their normal routines and get the day started but then the World Trade Center, and the Pentagon was crashed into by planes. Another place would have been hit if it wasn't for the brave heros on flight 93 that got the plane to where it wouldn't hit anywhere that people could be hurt, as everyone sat in fear shock wondering what happened or how it happened not believing something like this could happen. On This Day America and its' people cried, Cried out in fear and sadness. After that America cried again, Cried out in pride and showed that we the people of America were strong and could make it through the tough tragedy. Though many peoples lives were lost we will look back on this day in rememberence of the day America cried. We will thank god for the heros of america that died for us because of the terrorists attacks one year ago. Many children lost their mothers or fathers in this tragedy and no longer can see them but only in memories. Parents lost their children just starting out in the world that was given every chance to excel but now lost their chance to brighten their future. For all the people that died on 9-11, we know your watching down from the golden gates of heaven and watching us do what we do. we know you are in a better place and we are praying for you and your families. While I was typing away and listening to the radio and all of the sudden the DJ started talking about a plane flying into one of the world trade center buildings. I remember feeling something that I never felt before (and hope to never feel again) which was fear and helplessness. I tried logging into newspaper websites and couldn't get into any of them. I called my boyfriend because he was still at home and wasn't coming into work until after lunch. I told him what I had heard and he turned on the TV and we talked for a while and he recounted what he was hearing. I told him to keep calling me every once and a while to keep me updated. I remember hanging up with him and talking with some of my family and just praying. I remember praying for our country and those that were lost and there families and for our president. I knew President Bush was going to have alot to deal with and alot of tough decisions to make. I remember praying for my family also and thanking God that they were all safe. I remember not getting any work done all day at work. All my co-workers were by my desk and we were all talking about what was going on. I remember listening to the radio and hearing about the other tower being hit and then the Pentagon. I couldn't believe this was happening to America. I never use to pray for our country but know I realize how important it is to pray for it. I was walking to school that day. it was 7:30am central time, the time when the first plane it the first tower. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11, at around 9:00a.m., I was at St. Paul the Apostle Pre-School, preparing for my Little Angels class that would be starting in a few days. I was walking out of my class, to the office and was told by the Director of the school that the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane. And at that point, noone was sure if it was truely and accident, or if it was an act of terrorism. As this was being told to me, I was thinking to myself "I hope this is an accident". Actually a few thoughts went thru my head...and 'war' was one of them. I called my parents out east in Rocky Point to see if they were watching the news, they had just gotten in from early morning shopping but had just turned on the television, so I called my son Andrew. He explained that a plane had gone thru the first tower, and while talking...he interupted and in an excited voice he said..."OH MY GOD, MOM, a plane just went thru the other tower!!!!!!! I felt an immediate scare, and...vulnerable. I felt a rush of adrenalin, started to cry at the thought of such horrific devastation. I immediately got off the phone. Everyone was now searching for a radio, or television to hear and/or see exactly what was happening. We couldn't as we were down in the church building. I finished up my work, drove home, put the tv on and was in total shock...my thoughts???...With all the millions of dollars in military warfare,etc...WHERE were our men? HOW could they have possibly gotten away with this, and create such a horrific devastation???? HOW??? Then I heard the Pentegon was hit...Oh My God!!!!! I thought "THIS WAS IT"! I actually had felt no faith in our military. The innocent and heroic people that brought the plane down in Pittsburgh. And WHAT was going to happen next. HOW many other places were going to get attacked? My oldest daughter Jaclyn was in Texas on a business trip...and for the FIRST time I thanked God we were in the computer world! She couldn't reach us and we couldn't reach her. She felt frightened, and too far away from home and her family. I kept her up to date by "chat". Thank God for AOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was hard, very hard to know what she was feeling, just what we all were feeling. But to be alone was truely a very difficult situation for her...I felt helpless in being able to get her home safely. I just kept reassuring her that she was in a better place than us and that I thought she would be safer there. Needless to say, she was not able to get home for another few days, as there were no flights available to get home. We all watched the news. The air was quiet, every once in a while you heard the military jets as they canvassed the skies. It was such a frightening feeling because we all knew this was an act of terrorism, a cowardly, and very sneaky one...one that our country let these horrible people get away with...WHERE was security, fbi, cia, anyone? Why was Osama Bin Laden (how i hate to even type his name) and his crazy people not watched more carefully! Watching the city workers, WHOEVER they were, work diligently for HOURS, DAYS, WEEKS, MONTHS was just heart-wrenching! They never gave up. The firemen were needed, the policeman were needed, the ironworkers!, the city mechanics to keep those monster vehicles moving and not break down, all the volunteers that kept feeding the tired workers, all the donations...all this ~ was a display of incredible humanity. The concern, care and love for life was shown thru everyone that helped, some whether they wanted to be there or not, was so Godly. This all went on forever, and seemed almost endless, yet...every single worker, hero or volunteer, continued til every speck of the area was searched, found, cleaned, and then closure. My only hope it to rebuild, buildings that are still high with a smaller 'monumental building' in the center...so noone EVER forgets...and will see it...and learn...this demented, cruel and devastating act upon us, on this day, September 11. 2001. The mayor of New York City did a nothing-but-heart-felt, stupendous, tremendous job, guiding everyone thru this time of fear, difficulty, devastation, and permanent sadness. Thank you Mr. Rudolph Giuliani. You are a very special human being! Yesterday, as there was a memoriam at the site of the World Trade Center, as well as religious ceremonies and related musical presentations, it was a sad memory, but also a sign that we shall all overcome and move on. Tell us your story: I teach high school English to recent immigrants in Houston, and I was in my classroom during my planning period when I heard the horrible news. I cancelled all of my lessons, so my classes could watch the news. My students were so worried and had so many questions I couldn't answer. I wanted so much to be able to answer their questions. Some kids seemed even more afraid when there seemed to be no quick and easy answer to their questions. Today we watched the ceremonies, my students again showered me with questions. Many of the questions were the same, and I still had no answers to some of them. How do I answer a child when she asks me how some people could hate so much that they would want to commit murder? Tears came to my eyes when a girl asked me how this horrible thing could happen? I may not have all of the answers, but I have gained a new understanding of what courage is. Tell us your story: On the morning of Septemeber 11, 2001, I was at work preparing for what was ahead of me that day as I sat in my cubicel checking e-mail and voice mail,listing to my radio on my desk as I do each morning while conversing with friends about the evening before. Then....I went from laughter to disbelief as sadness came over me. Silence fell through our building as we (co-workers) all listened to our local radio station disc jokeys announce that we THE UNITED STATES, AMERICA had just been attacked by what was believed but not confirmed at that time, terriorist. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: REFLECTIONS ON A ?SECOND CHANCE? Tuesday morning started out like most days in my marketing career. I had several projects going at the same time and started my day by checking my email at 6:00 AM. I was so wrapped up in answering email and formulating my thoughts for our presentation at 10:00 AM at the Pentagon, that I did not turn on the news as I usually did each morning. Also, uncharacteristically, I did not turn on WTOP news radio on my way to the office at 7:00 AM, as I had several calls to place that morning while making the half hour drive to DI. I arrived at the office at 7:30 AM to accomplish a few tasks before Tom Asefi, CIO for GAITS, Inc., our teaming partner, picked me up at 8:45 AM for our 10:00 AM appointment. I remember passing by Dr. Wright's office before leaving DI and seeing Dr. Wright and Russell looking at the television with somber faces. I thought it was rather strange, as I had never seen the TV on in Dr. Wright's office before that day. Now I realize that they were viewing the horrific news of the World Trade Center Twin Towers devastation. Tom called to say that, as usual, the traffic was horrendous on 395 and he was running a little late. As we were driving towards the Pentagon, Tom was the first to inform me about the atrocious news regarding the tragedy at the World Trade Center. We actually did not realize that it was a terrorist act, and we were preoccupied with discussing the potential business the two companies would eventually pursue. Little did we know the catastrophe that was to take place just eight minutes after we drove by the heliport at the Pentagon. We also had no idea at the time that this disaster would create an extraordinary bond between us that will last a lifetime. Tom is a young father of a beautiful five-month-old baby girl, and he proved that age does not make a difference when it comes to maturity in a terrifying & dangerous situation. It was his calm, caring & strong demeanor that permeated and helped to calm my fears during this frightening experience. Tom's wife also willingly assisted me when she called on his cell phone to confirm his safety. When we informed her that no calls could "go out" on cell phones, she immediately offered to place long distance calls to my family in Colorado and to DI's corporate office to assure them that I was safe. We drove by the Pentagon heliport at approximately 9:30 AM. At 9:35 AM we were in the River Entrance at the Pentagon & I was on the telephone waiting for confirmation of an escort to our appointment with the Army. At that moment, hundreds of people started running through the turnstiles loudly expressing their feelings that there might have been a bomb that exploded, and the Pentagon was on fire! Tom and I immediately exited with the throng of individuals rushing from the Pentagon. At first, as everyone was standing on the lawn just outside the Pentagon, the realization set in that none of the cell phones were working! I remember the military supervisors taking a count of individuals in their department and deciphering who was missing. At one point, Tom and I decided to try and go back to retrieve his car, which we promptly realized was not feasible. At that point, reality jolted us --- As we started back towards the Pentagon, we witnessed security and medical personnel carrying seriously and fatally wounded individuals on stretchers. It was shockingly apparent that the situation emerging from the Pentagon was much worse that anyone had expected. I remember feeling the hair stand up on the back of my neck and feeling sick to my stomach at the same time, when a policeman in a squad car drove by and announced through a loud speaker that another plane was possibly "coming in" with a potential bomb on board. The load speaker blared: ?KEEP GOING TOWARDS THE RIVER --- AWAY FROM THE PENTAGON!!? The Pentagon Daycare Center was located near the River Entrance, and supervisors were trying desperately to get the children down behind a large stone wall so they would be protected in case there was another plane with a bomb on board!! Surprisingly enough, no one panicked, and I contribute this to the excellent training of our armed forces. Everyone was moving in an orderly manner, and I attribute that to the fact that the majority of the individuals were military and seemed to me to "have a solid handle" on the situation. I realize that I was in shock because of what I had witnessed, but I also know that because all military personnel were portraying a calmness and strength, it transferred positively to the civilians in the huge crowd of people. My prayers each night now include thanks for our phenomenal men & women in our armed forces!!! Tom and I walked with the throng of people all the way to the George Washington Parkway, and I remember one fellow saying, "Why aren't any of the cars stopping to pick us up? I told him that many people listen to music as opposed to news, and most likely, many were unaware of the tragic events at the Pentagon. Finally, one car stopped and Tom, being the gentleman that he is, insisted that the two women we were walking with and I take this ride, and he would catch the next one. As I got into the car, I noticed that the woman's arm was dirty and attempted to brush it off. We realized that it was soot, and then she showed me the back of her hair where it was burned almost to her scalp!! These two women were sitting at their desks when the plane hit the Pentagon and as they turned in their chairs, they were looking at a wall of fire!! The only identification they possessed were their ID tags on a chain around their necks. They had to run for their lives and left their purses, along with everything else in their office. I was with them about 45 minutes and we never exchanged names, which is so unlike my personality. I tried in vain to convince them that we should rent a car, being there were no cabs available, no phone service, and no one at the hotel knew where we could get a ride. I was able to find one cabbie who was going off duty, and he very kindly offered to take me back to my office. I told the two women that I would retrieve my car, and if possible, come back & pick them up. Getting back to their respective homes was going to be difficult, as one lived in Richmond, VA, & the other in Olney, MD!! When I returned to the hotel, I was saddened when I was unable to find them and realized that I will never know their names. It was close to noon when I finally returned to the DI office. The lights were out and there was no one to be seen, as everyone had been dismissed. I remember starting to break down as I was walking down the dark hall. I could feed my body starting to shake & my tears were starting to fall for the first time. In my heart and mind, I was silently hoping & praying that one of my ?DI? family members would still be in the office. I felt an indescribable sense of relief, (and my tears were flowing freely) when I finally found Simone, & Nikea in Simone's office. Nikea immediately brought me a cup of water to help calm my nerves. I was also able to make contact with my children in California and tell them that I was safe. Because of the traffic gridlock, it took me 1? hours for the normal half hour ride to my home in McLean, VA. Once home, I began to realize just how blessed I had been. Since September 11, not a day has gone by that I have not relived the huge billow of acrid black smoke rising from the middle of the Pentagon and the planes hitting the WTC in my mind. I awake almost every night with a fear that I cannot describe, and until now, I have not talked much about my fears and experiences from that day. Because I was not physically hurt, I downplayed my fears, even to myself. When Simone called and requested that I write down my thoughts about what happened to me on that horrendous day, for our DI newsletter, I sincerely thought about declining. Then I realized that writing this piece might very well help me with my fears and emotions about this appalling experience. I intend to continue to write about my thoughts, fears & other emotions that have surfaced in order to bring some type of "resolution" to this episode and permit me to continue with my life, as we all must do. My fears and psychological injuries are real, but certainly are nothing compared to the enormous grief felt by those who lost their loved ones. My thoughts and prayers are with them daily, as I light a candle every morning & every evening, without fail, for world peace. He kept shouting that terrorists had flown planes into the twin towers. I was shocked, dumbfounded and angry, but I felt no fear. I went to the others with whom I work and told them; then I said we had to get a TV up in the Board Room; we had to know what was going on; we had to know what we had to do! Our Ex. Director got the TV and everyone in the building gradually heard of this unthinkable rape upon our people. We gathered in the room and watched in disbelief and wiped away the tears. Work was at a standstill; no one was able to concentrate on the policies to be revised or the transfer list to be updated; we were numb. since we work for the state; certain emergency steps were initiated; we were all prepared to travel to New York city and lend a hand. I am a registered nurse; I wanted to comfort and console and I prayed that I would be called upon. I needed to do something; I needed to be there. Perhaps if I were there, I wouldn't think so much. But, none of us were called;we were thanked for volunteering and being on stand by. How could anyone be that evil and so callous as to attack civilians; then say it was done in the name of their God! With time, may they feel the power of our God, of our people, of our unity, of our nation. I am proud of our country and our people; more proud than ever before. Everywhere I go, I see the flag and I smile and thank God for my America. We are one, more so than ever; that is what the terrorists did, not destroy us, not disable us; you made us stronger. Loved ones were murdered; we will weep but we will remember how brave they all were. We are comforted in knowing that the angels gathered them all and each and everyone of them watch over us. We continue to battle terror in the only language they know; with missiles, planes, guns, ships; our troops, both here and abroad, are fearless in their tasks; they know what is at stake. On that faithful morning I was on duty on my secular job as a maintenance supervisor at Confort Suites in Newport, Kentucky. On that morning I was doing a room renovation in a room that had a mold & mildew problem. I had the television on for noise,mostly. All the sudden as I had my back to the TV, I heard we interupt the broadcast for a special bulletin. As I turned around I had the images immediately burned into my memory.The images of planes crashing into the towers in New York City. Then the faces of fear and death as cameras panned over the crowd.Immediately,my pager began to go off several with call from my wife and my churchmembers.Everyone, including myself could hardly speak without geting chocked up. Everyone,in the hotel was buzzing around and spoke to each other in spirits of fear.Later that afternoon,I was sent to the greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport to pick up crews of Pilots and Flight Attendants since all flights had been cancelled. Upon arriving, I was asked to step out of the company van while a bomb sbiffing dog was taken through it (this was after sitting in a line of traffic for over an hour just to get close to the terminal).When, I finally got to the Terminal, I saw hundreds of tear stained faces and others who stood in states of shock. For days, weeks, and months afterwards everyday the talk centered around the events of 9/11. The travel industry fell off to next to nothing.Although, travel has picked back up over time and time has begun to heal wounds.I still cant look at a statue of a fallen fireman or policeman (due to 9/11) without a tear trickling down my cheeck. I can truly say that Im even more proud to be an American today after 9/11 than I ever have been before. But dammit, I had to brief the Secretariat at 9:30 ... no time for terrorists. Hurry up the stairs and down the hall ... pull the chairman of the afternoon's meeting away from the TV monitor ... gotta get ready - people are coming from all over the country for our task group kick-off meeting at 1430hr. Sit down, reflect an instant, and say "I want to go home." "So you think we'll be next?" "We should have been first." Less than a minute later, a massive concrete structure shudders on itself. I think 'get under a doorframe' then 'what the hell difference will that make under three floors of concrete rubble?' and finally 'can I get out before it collapses?' Running, holding my breath, hands on shoulders in front of me, moving through the doorway, holding and encouraging each other ... where's the chairman - he has high blood pressure - why isn't he coming - police shouting to keep moving away from the building, another plane is on its way ... familiar faces contorted as never before seen, plane parts strewn along the ground. Tell us your story: NEW YORK 8 Sept. - 29 Sept. 2001 This diary was written by Nelcya DELANOE, Professor of American History at the University of Paris. My field is American Indian history within U.S. history. I hadn't been to New York for 5 years. I went there in September 2002 to do some research and to visit friends. The goal of my travel diaries is to take factual notes, or specific thoughts generated at the time. They help me write formal texts later on. This translation left out personal data that are irrelevant to the subject at hand. September 8 TWA flight, half empty Instead of Temesta, D. gave me some Stilnox. This pill, taken on board, immediately made me sick, like an overdose, reality went crinkly, I became dizzy, nauseous with streams of saliva, run to the toilets with paper bags, but it's just saliva. I finally get three-hours of sleep. Landing in NY with great weather, warm too. C. is waiting for me, am still dizzy. Went to bed at 8 pm. Sunday 9th I'm quickly finding my bearings again and admire the City -early eight o'clock walk this morning. Saturday night, a stream of strange dreams (lost my house, my address...) Brooklyn Museum.; gorgeous Amerindian pieces ( Woodlands' high rank prisoner, kneeling, his hands in his back; NW Coast, SW; Nez Perce, Peru etc...) ; Iranian, Japanese In the Khmer Art section, some beautiful pieces, obviously from the temples: "Acquisition dates: 1991, 1990, 1992". As I realized what those dates meant, I was so outraged I had to leave the premises; such beauty for a few dollars and so much blood and cynicism for just a show made me want to run away and get some fresh air. To merchandise, to spectacularize and to dehydrate history to that extent... I walk by those Bodisattva heads as if by the pail where guillotined heads would be rolling. These are kept behind clean windows, hygrometrically supervised, in an air conditioned room. And nobody seems surprised. But run away from what? And where to? In the Botanic Gardens, I breathed in and read Shakespeare's sonnets and lines, first thing first. Then, strolled along the alleys; a young Jewish orthodox couple, pallid and smiling; a flock of young Muslim women, draped in black, pallid and smiling; a band of Latinos, prim and chockfull of children, solemnly grinning at the camera; a young and handsome gay guy promenades with old ladies, bends by the rivulet pretending he is washing his linen; trees, trees, trees, catalpa, butterfly trees, bamboo in a peaceful Japanese garden, decorated with gray herons sculptures standing by the pond, striking. In the inferno of the subway, trains roar by. Cars are air conditioned. People ask for the train to ? and check on the map that they are on the right track. On the platform, the heat is burning, stifling, sticky. In the evening, dinner with K and J. I walked from Cooper Union to White St. and felt NY had become a caricature of itself. Monday 10th I walked my neighborhood, with a long stop at the Post Office, "Next!", and the bell rings and the light twinkles. Hot and muggy morning. Lunch with T., very pleasant, continued by a long conversation on his balcony. In the distance, we see the rain come from the tip of the island and rushing towards Wall Street Canyon. Around 7.30 pm, it turns into a storm with thunder and lightning, the night is thick, so is the rain, the streets are flooded and the taxis have turned into amphibious machines plunging up to their headlights into gigantic splashes. Thanks to T. , I have access to NYU Library, an icily air conditioned Ali Baba's cavern. Dinner with S. and T. ... Tuesday 11 Jet-lag is almost over. After the enormous storm, the night has cooled off and the atmosphere is much nicer (8.30 am) To-day, appointment with one of my Indian Studies students, M. D., who just won a Figaro grant for an article on New York Indians. 8.45 A plane is flying low over Manhattan and I mention it to C., since we never hear planes in this neighborhood. Followed by an enormous explosion, like the supersonic Bang, but also like last night's thunder. The telephone rings, and C. turns the TV on and we see the World Trade Center right tower in flames, belching smoke. We rush on to the terrace, on the 6th floor, huge black swirls of smoke, black-bellied clouds flown towards Brooklyn, regular, powerful; it looks like something is stuck in the tower, is it a plane? We stand petrified, facing the two towers from the terrace, in full sunlight. And then, we see it come in from the south, shining in the rays of the sun, a huge commercial plane, at full speed, circling low and then heading up towards the second tower, evidently heading into the Tower like an act of war, ramming into it deliberately, head-on. The Tower is immediately in flames, in an enormous spiral of smoky clouds and red flames. The building itself seems to burn both form inside and outside, its structure blackened from top to bottom as if streams of black ink were running down blotting paper walls, a horizontal black tide that runs down, down. It is clear the tower will collapse any time into embers, like a smoldering log. It does! With C., after 9.15, we concluded it was "War." At 10.00, we went to do some errands, some old people do the same, quick quick, while the shops start closing. I rush to the bank, to take my money out, too late, all transactions are suspended and clients withdraw cash with their cards. The streets are swarming with rows of people who walk up north, faces are serious, some are crying but everybody is calm and very worried; long lines at the bus stops, and bridges. Tunnels have closed; subway lines too. People are going uptown. We go back up on the terrace. The tower that was hit first has fallen, cut into two. It is now smaller than Woolworth, the perspective and the skyline have changed like a film special effect, at some point the smoke dissolves, the two tall towers are gone, almost completely volatilized, one completely, the other has been beheaded; is now a stump. On TV, we gradually learn there has been an attack against the Pentagon and that the two planes that ran into the towers were hijacked by pirates, with the passengers, coming from Boston/845, from Dallas/915. Another plane, that was threatening Camp David, was shot down. TV 12.30: we learn that Dick Cheney is in charge at the White House, that Bush is "most probably alive", that 6 other planes had been hijacked but lost track of except for the one that crashed near Pittsburgh, all airports are closed, and so are the borders, the National Guard is deployed in NY City and the Navy is sending ships in NY harbor. I did not go to my appointment with M. D. and feel guilty but C. insists he can call or come if he needs something since he has my name and my address. Altogether, 4 planes (coming from Newark?) have hit targets -was only one of them shot down? At 1 pm, we are told that Bush has gone from Florida to Louisiana. Since this morning, I can think of nothing else but Pearl Harbor, which the TV person is mentioning right now. C. says it's much worse in terms of the number of people who have been killed. In any event, "they" have struck at the heart of the empire and of its symbols: World Trade Center, Pentagon, Camp David I'll never forget what I saw this morning. I fear something nuclear 1.30 p.m: Banking transactions will not resume before a few days, and since big companies were based in the towers, the world market will feel the after-shock of millions of dollars vanished into smoke. They say the damage at the Pentagon is serious, and that damage to air lines is absolute (no flight is conceivable before quite some time, which never happened). 3.45 p.m According to security sources, Bin Laden might be responsible for "America under Attack". Bush is hiding in Nebraska, having a secret conference with the NSC 4.15 pm Fire is spreading to another building, I'm scared Why don' they have planes showering carbonic snow and water? 4.30pm "A low tech, high concept operation", Jeffrey Beatty, President of Total Security Intell 5 pm, Building 7, which was part of the WTC, collapses 7 pm, on the terrace: the enormous clouds have turned orange in the setting sun, thick orange turning black when the light declines At 6.30 pm, on TV, C. saw images of a bombardment over Kabul. A while later, the United States let it be known they have nothing to do with such bombardment. Nothing is ever heard of it again 8 pm: Canal Street is being evacuated. I feel like leaving the area; not C. who worries for the apartment, the workshop and its precious belongings. I try to call K. uptown but the phone is dead. On TV, we see priests, bishops, commentators and journalists, all calling for prayers 8 30 pm, TV, Micah Helpern, "Terrorism expert": "This happened because the United States is the greatest democracy and is opposed to fundamentalism. Nothing to do with supporting Israel" 8 45: Speech by Bush, "in defense of freedom and our lifestyle... and we will seek out the terrorists and those who harbor them" This morning, the news mentioned 8 to 10 hijacked planes; this evening, they talk of 4 planes. The 4th one crashed near Pittsburgh -on its way to Camp David? (WAS crashed, but... how? who by? The military? NOTHING about it). "Unbelievable " is the most frequently used term. On TV, they insist on people's trauma, and how their need for psychological support will probably last for years. Shocked by the UNBELIEVABLE nature of the thing: the towers have DISAPPEARED and building 7 has slid down in a few seconds, from ground 17 to ground zero At 9pm, risks of biological attacks are mentioned; also, foundations of buildings in the WTC neigborhood have been shaken; also: the towers' explosion might have been reinforced by explosives taken on board The National Guard and plane carriers are sent to NY city 10 30pm We learn on TV that two men who looked suspect were arrested near the George Washington bridge with a truck full of explosives, to blow the bridge. The 4 planes with their passengers = 265 persons Wednesday 12 8 am->12 30 pm: walk down to Houston and then west to the Pier and the East River. The police will not let anybody go below Houston. The fire has resumed at 1 Financial Center and it is said the generator is burning, more big beige and brown clouds. The army has started taking positions and the militarization of daily life is going to become visible, palpable. At 10 o'clock, Bush made a new speech and called what happened on Monday the 11th "An Act of War"; which means the insurance companies won't have to pay for damages. Markets were immediately boosted, and the Stock Exchange too, though it is closed. As I walked around this morning, I came across a nurse, she was calling from a pay phone as I was waiting; she seemed very worried, "This is a mess!" She later explained her patient had been evacuated from her house and the police was unable to tell her where to, but the lady needed treatment, "This is a mess, I'm hoping my supervisor will show up and help me help her!" In a narrow, empty Village street, I saw a 4x4 Mercedes parked along the sidewalk, doors flung open; the driver arrives, an (India) Indian in his thirties, looking exhausted, elegant, small pony-tail. The car is blanketed with talc powder dust and with ashes, packs of them on the windshield. He had run away from his house, after the attack against the first tower. But he had left his dog. He had gone back there this morning, with the agreement and the help of the police, had brought his dog back and had just dropped him at some friends'. He then drove away at fullspeed in a cloud of dust and ashes. He said his apartment had been filled with them almost to the ceiling. The dog was sitting on top of the ghastly pile. Listening to the news: Bodies are NOT mentioned, the term is not pronounced and when some witnesses begin to mention them, they are kindly but firmly cut off; it is invisible unless you pay attention. In the same manner, no evaluation whatsoever has been made of the number of the victims (c.f., different from Baghdad/Iraq) Also: they insist NY air is not polluted, no asbestos, no dioxin; it is also said asbestos breathed in for a short period of time is not dangerous, which C. says is bullshit. Also: God is everywhere, on everybody's lips, amidst each sentence, and prayers are organized everywhere. TV News: images focussing on the George Washington war ship now in front of New Jersey. Noon: it is announced that the Pentagon was just evacuated, fire having resumed, no figures are given, but yesterday they talked of 800 dead. May be more, they say now One of C's friend said after the 2 towers collapsed, she saw a Stealth bomber, you couldn't hear anything On TV: a senator explains the current American situation by the fact that Europeans do not have the same policy as the US in the Middle East (Iran, Iraq). If the whole world maintained the blockade against them, everything would be over in one year. 6.30 pm, CNN/NYU = Part of the 1 Liberty Plaza building that went on fire today just collapsed. Majority leader Senator Daschle evokes Pearl Harbor. Another building is about to collapse. The FBI has arrested men in Florida and in Boston. There are no survivors in the Pentagon. The FBI says it has identified individuals who would have been implicated in the hijackings. Commercial flights have not resumed. 23 Israeli tanks rolled into Jericho (700 meters into Palestinian territory), now occupied. Well structured, beautifully oiled and delivered -tone, rhythm, mimics, smiles, not one mistake, and 23 standing ovations, and roaring applause. A real ballet, choreographed by the Speaker, sitting behind the president (navy blue jacket and red tie). The content is clever and energetic: defense of Islam, of Muslims, of Allah, of democracy, whose representatives are elected, as opposed to etc... Coming from W., after the scandal of his own election! The analysis is Manichean and old-fashioned -Good against Evil, war of civilizations, Justice against Barbarians ("Infinite Justice", "crusade" of previous days have been dropped, after Arabs and Middle East Muslims expressed their anger). Promises of a relentless war, with escalating demands presented to the Taliban: no longer just Bin Laden but all terrorists; and the necessity to chose: "with us or against us". But no particular move is announced, and Saudi Arabia is not threatened with diplomatic break even though it continues to support fundamentalist warmongers; no mention of Algeria; as for Pakistan, hard times ahead. I was feeling sorry for myself; as I was going through a Divorce after 19 years of wonderful marriage to my college sweetheart Jackie E. Wooster. Jackie had an affair with a Puerto Rican guy Ed Nazario while I was deployed to Kosovo, and all I was feeling was a mixed bag of emotions for myself. This may sound like a typical Military Divorce story, but I took my job in Special Forces seriously - as I also took my Family in front of everything, except God. I missed my two boys Robert Jr. and Joseph then and now very badly. So today 11 September 2002, also comes with a heavy heart at the loss of my family and the Great people in our nation due to the attacks of 9/11/01. The horror of what I was to see on TV, and the sealing up and almost complete shutdown of Ft. Bragg, NC brought the reality home that we as a nation could be attacked at home. I, like a grand number of soldiers were immediately placed in specific areas about and surrounding the installation to provide security. I felt the deepest sense of grief, not at my loss for the moment; but for the people in the three areas that were attacked. My heart sunk as the reports of the attacks permeated the airwaves. Then as more reports came about, the Pentagon was hit, and it slapped the military in the face - that our very building with so much experienced leadership was hit also. I could almost see the "Details" being assigned to go notify families of their losses, and shuttered with the shocking reality of it all. Our Nation, the United States Of America had been attacked by a cowardly and dastardly group of faceless people. As I continue to do my volunteer work as a Fire Fighter and EMT for the Hope Mills Fire Department in Hope Mils, NC even to this day, and especially today. The Fire Fighters, Police, Emergency Medical Services, and Military all feel the pain at such a great loss to us all. SO, you say, so what - Well, I must now face myself and look myself in the mirror and say - "Rob, - you lost so little, while others have lost far more - Thank God for your blessings and Pray for those who lost so much - that were so close to their hearts". Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was playing solitaire on the computer when my husband called me. He listens to talk radio. He called and asked me if I was watching TV, I told him "Nick" was on so the only thing I was listening to was children's cartoons. He then told me to turn it on the news, any channel would do. I asked why, while walking to change the channel. Just as I turned on Fox News, the second plane hit the WTC. I asked him if this was for real and he said yes. I told him I had to go and I would call him later. I immediately got on the phone to my sister-in-law who lives on Long Island to see how my brothers were. Her husband, my younger brother, used to work in the city. My older brother, Gene, was supposed to be going to a job interview in the city that day. She turned on the news as soon as I called and said that Bill didn't go into the city today, he was on the LIE and heard what happened and turned around to come home. Gene never made it to the interview, but they couldn't get hold of him for a couple of hours. I talked to her for about 2 hours, both of us watching all that was happening in the news. I finally got off the phone to call my mother. Couldn't get hold of her. Decided to get online and try to reach my dad who was working in Florida. He e-mailed me asking about where mom was and what was going on with my brother Andre. Andre is in the Navy Reserves, and we were worried that he might be called up. I told him I couldn't get hold of mom, was still trying to reach Gene, and the phones were not getting through to NY. No one had heard from Andre. Mom called about a half hour later. She was on her way to Greensboro, NC with some girlfriends and her friend's husband had called to let them know what was going on. Her friend, Theresa, has family that lives in NY also. Theresa's son-in-law works in the WTC. They hadn't heard from him as of yet. Mom said they were turning around and coming home, she would meet me at my house. During this entire time, I have two children at home watching the towers burn. One child is three years old, obviously didn't grasp the reality of what was going on. The other child, Joshua, was 6 years old at the time. He kept asking if that what he was seeing on the tv was real. Being that I lived on Long Island for most of my live, visited NYC every year on class trip, was planning a trip to NY in December, and always pointed out the Manhattan skyline to the kids when we drove up, I had pictures of the WTC. I pulled out my photo album and showed my son the pictures of the World Trade Centers as they had looked and then pointed up to the television to show him what they looked like now. Just as I was explaining the two pictures( the one on tv and the photos), the towers started falling. Joshua sat in amazement at the buildings falling. He asked how tall they were. Being in Roanoke, VA, it is hard for a small child to realize how tall the building in NYC really are. Roanoke has a First Union Building that is 18 stories. I explained to Joshua that it would take five of the First Union Buildings one on top of the other to be as tall as just one of the WTC buildings. He just sat there for a few minutes and his mouth dropped. Then he looked at the television set, the smoke coming from the fallen building, then looked at me and said " there were alot of people in there wasn't there?" I just started to cry. What could you say? I couldn't go into explaining the Pentagon or the plane crash in PA. My husband came home early. His office is across from the Federal Building in Roanoke. He said he went out to have a cigarette and saw everyone leaving the Federal Building and went back inside the office and told his boss. The main office in Charlottesville, VA then called and told them all to go home. Within an hour of him coming home, my two older children came home from school. Buddy, 10, and Jackie, 9. Buddy sat in front of the tv and didn't move until we told him to go to bed. My mother showed up around 5pm and had called my dad in Florida to let him know she was fine. No one had heard from Andre or Gene at this time. I went back online and e-mail Gene again. He called and said he was fine. Andre called my mom around 9 pm that night to let her know he hadn't heard anything yet. I have to say, yesterday, September 10, 2002, we were listening to the Sean Hannity show on talk radio, remembering the past year. Joshua sat in the front seat of the car with me, looked at me and said, "I remember that day. I remember hearing them say that." For a six year old to remember such a horrible event has got to count for something. To keep this tragic terrorist attack out of the schools and not let the children speak out is just as tragic. He was home that day because he was sick, but he learned more that day in what the world is really like that he would ever learn the rest of his life in school. I believe that the WTC should be built just as big as it was and just as bold as could be, just to show those who thought we could be "demolished" that they were wrong. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I arrived the morning of September 11th for work. As I reached the unit in which I was working, my co-worker said to me, "Come look out the window you are not going to believe this." We both walked to the conference room which gave a clear view of the towers. The first tower had pieces of a plane that could be seen, we were on the 16th floor. As we look in amazement, we saw another plane approaching the towers; we were thinking that it was maybe news people or something seeing what had happened. However to our amazement and suprise the plane hit the second tower. I stood there as tears streamed down my eyes I knew from that point we were being attacked. I froze thinking and saying all of those people, who would do such a thing. Emotionally I was torn, scared and thinking I must get the patients to try and comfort them, and prepare for what was to come. I will never forget the horror of seeing the first building collapse like a house of cards, I weeped and felt so much pain for innocent soles that had become victims of such an horrible act. The picture of what took place is engraved in my mind and I could never forget. God Bless those who have been directly and indirectly affected by this tragedy. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I'm sitting in Chemistry class and the principal interrupts the class with an announcement. He tells us a tragic accident happened in New York and we should turn on the TV?s. Just as he was telling us to turn on the TV?s class was over. My next subject was German and we continued to watch the TV. Soon we realized that this was no accident but a terrorist attack. Fortunately I had no family in the Pentagon and the Twin Towers but a few students had family members working in the pentagon. The rest of the day was mainly a waiting game nobody knew what was going to happen next, people were still in shock. Parents started to pick up their kids from school and the ones who were eighteen years or older left by themselves. Around 3:30PM school was over and I went straight home. Everything was closed and I was just like everyone else glued to the TV watching the events unfold.
