We buy boots and shoes for all of the military and I'm responsible for the quality of the footwear that we buy. That morning, we had footwear contractors in from Michigan and were going over some of our contracts when somebody came by our office and said that a commercial airplane had just crashed into the WTC in New York. I thought that was odd because it was a clear day and I couldn't understand how an airliner could do this. Someone had a radio and we started to listen to the reports when they said another airliner crashed into the second building of the world trade center. At that moment, we all looked at each other and knew we were at war. The contractors wound up driving back to Michigan and we have been supplying large quantities of boots and shoes to our military ever since. I think this was the worst attack against our country ever. This was a sneak attack against innocent civilians with a tragic loss of life. I'm confident this country will not ever rest until all of those responsible are brought to justice... I did not really know what happened until I got to work. We all listened to the radio and I snuck on the Internet to find out what was going on. I could not wait to get home to watch and learn what had happened. I sat glued to my TV all night and the next night. What a terrible thing to happen, and moreover, to have been planned. I do not follow the news much, but this was heavy on my mind. I do not know anyone personally who was in NY or on the airplanes, but I have been reading stories about the attacks. I read "Love, Greg and Lauren" (Lauren was in NY just walking into a tower when a fireball got her, and husband Greg tells, via email to his friends and family, her day-to-day recovery for the first 3 months) and I have 2 other books I bought to read regarding that fateful day. My husband had left for work and I was watching the Today show. When the first plane hit, they weren't sure exactly what happened. They thought it was a small private plane. I called my husband at work and left him a message saying "the weirdest thing just happened. A plane hit the World Trade Center." It was shortly after I hung up that the second plane hit. I stood in front of the TV and can't even remember what I was thinking at that point. Of course, after that, it was one news flash after the other. The plane hitting the Pentagon, Flight 93, the crumbling of the towers. My eyes were riveted to the TV for hours. During the course of the week I know I cried every day. All the people holding up pictures of loved ones, wondering if they were dead or alive, the memorial service in Washington. It was all too much to bear. We live close to Mpls/St. Paul Airport and there wasn't a time when I couldn't hear a commerical flight taking off or landing, but there was silence for the rest of the week. I remember waking up in the middle of the night and hearing nothing but the drone of military planes passing overhead. It was a very surreal and somewhat frightening experience. I was thinking of all the lost lives, I was wondering what the future held for my very young children. The world as I knew it would never be the same. I thought about how I would be able to raise my children in a world full of such hate and violence. But when they are old enough to understand what happened on September 11, I will tell them and try to teach them about what a hero really is. Not a sports figure, or rock star, but every day people doing heroic acts and giving their lives so that others may live. As she left, I turned on the TV to watch the morning news, since my classes did't start untill noon. I watched the last commercial break I would see for days and then, still groggy, sat transfixed as CNN began it's breaking news coverage. I remember seeing the second plane on the screen a split second before it hit. At that point I remember standing up and grabbing the phone. My instincts were to call my mom & dad, but I realized I had no way of reaching them since they were on vacation in Europe. We had just moved to Washington weeks before and realized there was simply no one I could call. As I watched, I became more and more alarmed. The FBI was investigating "foul play." All tunnels & bridges were closed. A commercial plane had been hijacked. One of the planes was an American Airlines 767 from Boston. As each of these chilling messages appeared on the breaking news banner across the sceen my heart beat faster. Aaron Brown, CNN's extraordinary anchor, announced a "significant fire" at the Pentagon. At this, I began to feel real fear. This was no longer just alarming, it became personally threatening. As initial reports came in, rumors of a fire on the National Mall were reported. I felt like I was living in a giant target. I decided to go get my sister from class, but it took me forever to get out the door because I kept stopping in front of the TV. I remember thinking "if this is terrorism, it's worked. I feel terrorized." I walked through our lobby and saw people crowded around a television, unable to move, just as I had been upstairs. As I walked outside I was not prepared for what I would see. There was total gridlock on the streets and I realized that thousands of people were trying to leave Washington. It looked like a movie but I remember repeating to myself this is REAL. Through a stroke of blind luck, I ran into my sister on the street, almost literally. Someone had interrupted her class and said "the Pentagon & State Department have exploded. We're at war." She immediatly ran for me just as I had for her. Together we watched both towers fall. Debating about whether or not to leave Washington. We decided that if one more attack happened here we'd leave. Thank God that did't happen. I will never forget how scared and alone we felt. Phone lines were down. Our parents out of the country. We were in a city both new to us, and under attack. Since then we've had to deal with anthrax as well as the sniper attacks. While both were terrifying, in a way we had been toughened by the horror of 9/11, strengthened somehow by it too. I no longer think about leaving Washington. I will stay in defiance of the terrorists, anthrax killers, and snipers, who want to instill fear in us all. Tell us your story: I was getting ready to come into work that morning and had turned on "Good Morning America" where they had just broken in with the story that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. I had more than a passing interest in the story -- I had once lived in New York and knew there was a possibility I knew people who worked in the towers. Also, in the back of mind was the nagging question -- how did a plane manage to crash into the WTC? I had flown in and out of New York enough times to know that flying around Manhattan is standard procedure, not flying over it. However, in a few minutes that question was answered when before my eyes I saw the second plane crash into the second tower. At that point I knew, as did most Americans, that this was not some kind of weird accident. Then the reports began to come in about something happening at the Pentagon. When it was confirmed that it was yet another airplane I could feel my adrenaline surging. I truly felt the fight or flight mode that so often accompanies that rush. I called my workplace, a university library, to tell them what was happening and to get access to radios and/or televisions. By the time I got to work the first collapse had happened. I couldn't comprehend it. Then I saw the second tower collapse. During the day we kept a small portable television on in the library and people came by to get what information was available. We turned to the various news web pages to see if something new could be turned up. Along with the rest of the country we began to piece together the events of the day -- how four planes had been hijacked, how three of those had hit their mark and how the fourth had been brought down in rural Pennsylvania. We worried about the safety of the President as he rode in Air Force One. As so many people did I called friends and family that I could reach, to touch someone through a phone call if not face-to-face. Again, I wondered if anyone I knew had been trapped in the towers. Over the course of the next two weeks I found out that one person who had been a few years behind me in school was doing a one-day seminar in Windows on the World and didn't survive. The younger brother of another person I was acquainted with worked for Cantor-Fitzgerald. He was killed and left a wife and two daughters, the youngest of whom was only a few months old. The sheer numbers were hard to deal with. Familiar names were impossible. I heard of another person from school who was working at the Pentagon when it was hit. Fortunately he was on the other side of the building and survived. In so many ways the events of September 11th seem like yesterday, in other ways it seems like years have already gone by. It will be emblazoned on my memory for my lifetime. To the thousands of victims in both New York and Washington, and to those brave souls on the flight that crashed in Pennsylvania -- we'll never forget. At that time I was working at a dentist office in Baton Rouge. I got to work about 20 minutes late because the traffic was unbelievable. When I entered the office everyone was talking about the terrrible incident and there was a television on in every operatory. It took all of 3 minutes watching one of the new showings to discover what had incurred. At the office, I was in charge of shipping cases to the lab in California. From that day and until the day I left that office in Januaruy, cases were delayed for an additional 3-6 weeks. I would speak to various patients throught the next few months, who all offered their stories of how the 9/11 incident had changed their lives. As a Louisiana History teacher, I am aware of the impact this event had on our country's economy and how many lives were changed as the threat of terrorist was planted in the minds of each citizen regardlesss of race, gender, or location. I may be just one middle-aged, mother of two, working in a small school district in small town in Louisiana, but I represent one of millions that will never forget that day and how this country shifted from the Big U S of A into a country of people that need each other to be whole. I received a devestating phone call from one of my employees in Houston who was also driving to work. I turned on my radio and could not believe what had just happened. When I got to work, we got together and said some prayers for all the family and friends who were affected by the horrible tragedies. We turned on the television and just cried together. At lunch the local churchs had put together Memorial & Prayer Services so I attended one of those. At the end of the day our city had put together a prayer service and we went together to that service. When I picked up my daughter from school I could not stop hugging and kissing her, the same for my husband when I got home. That evening we prayed together as a family for our nation to be joined together, for healing to all those affected and for all Americans to seek to find God to be the center of their life. We turned on the tv at work and for the rest of the dday wwe stood watching as the towers burned and finally fell to the earth. Tears flowed from everyone's eyes, supervisors, managers, president of the company, everyone there stood in silence and cried. I felt a hollowness inside me and wondered why. Why would someone do something like this? They would have to be very sick minded with no heart oor soul. Then I realized the Pentagon also was hit. "What next?" came to my mind and when are we going to get the Navy, Army, Air Force and Marines launched out to wherever to take care of this. I was very emotional because I was pregnant. I remember sitting down because my legs went numb. Then I just prayed to God to help those sould lost and to please be with their families. Then I prayed for my family many miles away that they would be safe. I arrived home at 4:30 pm and stayed in front of the television watching Peter Jennings until I fell asleep. I went to school on the bus with my friends and my backpack. My first period class was Spanish and I didn't hear anything about the attack, probably because nothing had happened yet. I went to my second period class and still nothing. When I got to my third period class, the classroom was dark with the television on. The class was Global Studies; the teacher being Mrs. Capen. I walked into the room and I saw the really big news on the television. At first I thought it was just a rerun of the bomb that was in the Twin Towers in 1993 because I saw the gaping hole in the side of one of the towers. When I saw the other plane hit I got really scared because I thought, "what if one of my family members was in one of the towers?" After this my class and I heard that a large airplane also had struck the Pentagon. All that period we watched the devastating disaster. My class and I watched the first tower collapse which made everyone fell very sad inside. When that class was over I knew that was going to be a class to remember. I went to Earth Science next. It was exactly like my Global Studies class. My teacher Mr. Goldpenny said, " The school never said that we had to teach our classes." So all during that period we watched CNN. My friend and I usually talk constantly during Earth Science lab but this was the first time that we had never talked during this class because it was so important to our lives that we paid attention to this historical event. I watched CNN every period that day, even during my lunch period! I went home and my mother ran up to me and hugged me because she was so happy that we weren't involved in the "Attack on America". I flopped on the couch because I was so tired and I was hoping that there was something on television to watch, like a good movie, but every fifteen out of twenty channels where talking about the attack, or playing the collapse of the second tower. The same day that this all happened another plane went down in Somerset, Pennsylvania. The passengers of the plane fought the terrorists and the plane crashed in some field in Pennsylvania. About three days afterwards, people were telling me that the plane in Somerset, Pennsylvania was supposed to be going to Somerset, New York (where Barker is located). The terrorists were aiming for Somerset because there is a major power plant called AES. AES generates power for some of Manhattan. This was only a rumor. After the devastating disaster everyone, including me, were very sad and had high hopes for some payback on Osama bin Laden. Now this tragedy has influenced people to give blood and give money to the Red Cross to help the injured. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was a typical Teusday morning, I was sitting in my 2-Dimensional Design class. We had been in class for nearly two weeks and I was still getting accustomed to my new classmates and my new professors, I was just two weeks out from back home (Flushing Queens). Around 10:30am when we were allowed to go on break I was sitting calmly in my chair drinking a soda. My Professor came in and said that the world trade center had been hit by an aircraft. The first thing I thought was 'Oh great another plane crash' then she continued to say that they think it was a terrorist attack, I guess it was my typical New Yorker response. My reaction was of confusion, then I became concerned that maybe one of my family members was there. The professor let us out of class early, I headed home I felt zoned out and alien. As if everything was going on around me but it was like watching a silent movie. As soon as I walked into my apartment my roomate asked me if I had seen what had happend and if I was alright, the only thing I remember saying was that if any of my family is hurt or killed because of this I was going to enlist. They began to show replays of the airplanes hitting the towers, then I thought about my uncle Alex who works at the World Trade Center renovating offices. I began to try to reach my mom and my family but the lines were busy. I decided to go to class because I needed to keep busy. I sat through the rest of my classes thinking about the attacks trying not to stay calm and I kept telling myself my family was ok. I went and picked up my friends John and Geoff and we went to get something to eat. John was in worse shape then I was, he was actually in shock. I kind of felt bad because it seemed that I couldn't show any emotion and here was my best friend trembling and nervous. Geoff on the other hand was probably the most mature of all of us, he would just sit there and ask if we were ok if he could do anything to help. Later in the day I got ahold of my dad, he told me to try and reach my uncle Alex and told me not to worry about my mom, everyone else was ok. It took another week to finally get ahold of my mom in the city, she said she was fine and that my uncle Alex was fine too. Luckily he had gotten out of the building after the second plane hit. He had run all the way down to battery park and was still recovering from the shock. After I got ahold of my mom I guess I started feeling anger against the people who did this horrific act of violence. Things started to rebuild in terms of people moving on and getting on with their lives. I just feel sad for the people that lost friends and family in the planes and in those buildings. Tell us your story: On that particular day, I had gotten up earlier than usual to do some last-minute studying for an exam I had later that afternoon. I'm a student at the University of Missouri Saint Louis (UMSL). I had stepped out to get some breakfast, and when I returned home at about 6:45am (7:45am in New York), my neighbor met me on the porch with a 7-month-old kitten in her arms. The cat had been found stray a couple weeks earlier outside the Fox Theater downtown, and she apparently wasn't getting along with my neighbor's other cat. So my neighbor, Mary, asked me if I would like to have the kitten. I asked what her name was, and Mary said she hadn't named her yet and that I could pick a name. Well, I didn't have a name in mind, but I took her in the house anyway. About an hour later, I was taking a break from studying and was chatting online with a friend from Spain. She didn't speak a lot of English, so her posts to me were laced occasionally with Spanish. She said, "Gary, Gary, big trouble in New York." I said, "What do you mean?" And she replied, "Guerra." I knew that this was the Spanish word for war, but I didn't know exactly what she was talking about. I thought maybe some gang war or something had made web news and that's what she was talking about. So I said, "Oh, don't worry, it's fairly common in big cities like that." She said, "Not like this. This is bad. This is evil." So I moved away from my computer, turned on CNN just a couple minutes before the second plane hit 2WTC. I just thought suddenly, "How many people have just lost their lives in front of my eyes?" And I just dropped onto my sofa and cried. I didn't care that guys aren't supposed to cry. There was no other reaction possible. The kitten jumped up on my lap and curled up, purring, right then. I petted her for a bit, still staring absently at the TV screen. I just whispered, "New York." And the cat jerked her head up to look straight at me. I looked into her small face with huge shiny green eyes, and I said, "New York. That's your name." I named her in honor of all those who died and all those who risked their lives on that day. At the time, I hadn't yet heard about the Pentagon or Pennsylvania, but she seemed to respond instantly to "New York," like it was the right name to give her. So it stayed. I spoke a couple days later to my friend in Spain, and she told me that when I didn't come back to our conversation, she knew I was glued to the TV. She waited for me for 10 minutes, then went back to her own TV. She said she just gave in and cried for the next several hours. Our pain was felt and shared half a world away. She is a member of an organization at her university in Barcelona, and they gathered together that night for a candlelight vigil and said prayers for the dead in NY, DC, and PA. After all, those terrorists didn't target the "American Trade Center," they targeted the "WORLD Trade Center." It was an attack not against America, but against the world. And the world felt it. And as one of the earlier letters states, from Switzerland, "We were ALL Americans that day." I was helping with the switchboard when my boyfriend called up to tell me a plane crashed into the World Trade Center. My first reaction was that it was an accident. It was only a little plane. It just had to be an accident. He was unsure of what kind of plane it was until the second plane hit. After the second plane hit, the news came over the radios. No one could believe it. The whole office gathered together to listen to radio news broadcast. My heart actually felt like it had stopped. The whole time I was at work I had no emotion except shock. We were let out at noon. I went home as fast as I could and was glued to the television. It all happened so fast that I really could not take it in. I made sure I got to the store in time for first press. I wanted to be sure I got enough information to help it all make sense. This is history and I wanted every piece of it to help me down the line when I have children. By the time I have children, this will be just another part in there history books. I want it to be more than that. I must of called everyone I knew to just know where they were. People were stopping by with so many emotions running. Revenge was the main emotion. I still had no real feeling towards it all. The next morning I woke up and can honestly say I forgot. It did not take me long to remember. On my way into work everything was different. For the first time in a long time, even before the attacks, there was a sort of peacefulness to everyone and everything around. I was amazed at how many flags were displayed in such a short period of time and how much kindness was in the air. People were actually being nicer. I know now that I was only in shock. My heart goes out to all of the families who lost someone dear to them. I may not of known anyone, but I can honestly say on September 12th I felt as if I we are all connected in a way. I believe that we will go on. We will always remember but it will not hold us back! We will United Forever and Always as One Nation. I overheard two other teacher's talking and one of them was crying. I asked her what was wrong. Even almost three years after so many of our family and friends lost their lives to cowards, images of that day are horribly clear. That morning started out like every other day. I had just returned home shortly after 8:30 a.m. from taking my son to school and had sat down to watch The Today Show. I can still feel the weight in my chest, the tears running down my face and my prayers for the lives I knew were forever lost. By the time the entire world witnessed the second plane hitting I knew our world and our lives would never again be innocent. When the Pentagon was also attacked, my immediate thoughts were of my son and his safety. As implausible as it was that South Carolina may be attacked, I could not help but fear that possibility. After all, did anyone ever think that our Pentagon would be blatanly targeted? For the next week I remained in front of the television, praying for miracles to be found in the rubble. Crying at the heart wrenching images of innocent men and women jumping to their deaths to try and escape the fire. I lost my father in February of 1999 and every day since his death I wished that he were still with us, except on September 11, 2001. That day I remember thanking God that my father were no longer alive to see what was happening. After years in the Army's Special Forces, my father worked for 21 years as a Firefighter. The sight of so many Firefighters, EMS and Police Officers, as well as the thousands of innocent people would have destroyed him. No one should have ever had to witness death like that. I continue to feel deep pain for the families and victims of that day and I pray for their salvation and happiness. My God continue to bless us all and keep us safe from the world's cowards. Blue skies and really nice. I was working and one of our maintenance men came back and said a plane had flown into the World Trade Center. I thought that was bad but remembered the plane that hit the Empire State building in the 40's. I thought the lose of life was bad but it could have been worse. I know the airspace in that area can get quiet congested and thought it was a simple accident. A bit later he came back and said it was a twin engine plane. Again a tragedy. Then someone else said it was an airliner. That got me to go to the break room and I saw it. Horrific scene. In a little bit someone else came back and said a second plane had hit the other building. We turned on a radio and caught little bits of the news as we still had to work. As the morning continued we heard of the crash in Pa and the plane hitting the Pentagon. We were under attack. I cannot really describe the feelings I had. It was patriotic, anger and a sense of witnessing history. I am 40 yrs old and dont remember JFK's death but remember hearing people say they remember where they were and what they were doing when it happened. I thought of that right away. I made a mental note to look around and take in as much of the day as I could. I know we were scheduled to work 12 hours that day and we worked the entire 12. I remember when I got off work and was going home I noticed very long lines at the gas pumps. I thought "what is going on?" Then I heard on the radio that gas prices were expected to skyrocket. I figured that if the prices were going up then I better fill up. I bought 2 locking gas caps for my cars and filled them up. The prices were normal at that time. It was around 7:30 in the evening. Downtown Columbus, Ohio was shut down. There was a sense of disbelief in the air. People were talking with each other like never before. People seemed to want to know each other. There was a calm in the air. It was eerie. I cannot fully describe it but I was so totally aware of everything. I was saddened by the deaths of so many people and felt so much pride in the actions of the NYPD, FDNY and all the other agencies that responded. It was a beautiful day in Columbus, Ohio... Tell us your story: I got to work early that morning and I was on the phone with a friend discussing how we were going to get to the Yankees game with our 2 sons the next evening. She lives on 34th St. and 2nd Avenue and has a clear view south. As we were talking, she said, "You are not going to believe it, but I just saw a plane fly into the WTC." I thought, "That's wierd, must be an accident." We kept on talking. Ten minute later, she called back to say, "Another plane just flew into the WTC. I called you because I didn't know what else to do." I knew it was terrorism. I tried calling my son's school and couldn't get through and then tried my husband's office and couldn't get through. Just then, my assistant walked in and her face was ashen. I said, "Did you hear what happened?" and she replied, "I saw it from the subway coming in from Brooklyn." I told her, "If you can't get home, come to my house." And I flew out the door. I raced toward my son's school. I will never forget standing on the corner of 34th St and Park Avenue South, looking south at the mushroom-like cloud in the distance. At that point, groups of people had gathered on every corner, but many people did not know what had happened--they thought it was a fire or something. I was one of the first parents to reach my son's school. There I learned the Pentagon had been attacked. I wanted to take some of my son's friends home but the school wouldn't let me (afterward, they changed their policy...). My son and I walked home in a daze. By the time we reached home the towers had already fallen. We spent the morning staring at the awful events of the day on TV. Then, I went into my bedroom which faces south and saw that the towers were gone. I truly felt that our lives might end that day but at least I was at home with my son. After living in NYC for over 20 years, I finally understood what it meant to live on an island... My husband had stayed at work to help victims. His office is right below Canal Street and peopled streamed uptown looking for phones, bathrooms, bandages. Later, when we left the house I noticed a man who looked homeless. His clothes were in tatters and he was covered with ash. It took me a few minutes to realize he had been at ground zero. Then we saw 100's and 100's of people streaming up First Avenue on foot. I'll never forget how over 3000 people perished from my city on such a brilliantly gorgeous fall day in September. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: During the summer of 2001, my husband, Kimball, and I were preparing for our permanent move to Anchorage, Alaska. He had gone up there in June to start work and save up enough for us to have a place to live, while I stayed in Payson, Utah with my parents. Our daughter Hazel was almost 15 months old when he left, and I was four months pregnant with our second child (a boy, Nathan). Kimball came back to Utah at the end of August so he could drive our car up the Alaska/Canada highway with his Mother. They left September 5th. It was a long, exhausting journey, and the whole trip was filled with an underlying feeling of urgency to get to Alaska. On the night of September 10th, instead of staying in a hotel, they were prompted to finish driving their last leg of the journey all the way through the state line that divides Canada from Alaska, and they made it to Anchorage during the early morning hours. Falling asleep never felt so good for them as it did that night, but it was short-lived. They were awakened early in the morning on September 11th to hear the devastating news about the attacks. Aside from the extreme sorrow we all felt about what was happening, we were also very grateful for the promptings they had to keep pushing forward until they were past the state line. If they had not listened and waited not even a day more to go through, they would've been stranded in Canada for at least two weeks before the state line would be re-opened. As for me, I was awakened the morning of 9/11 by the phone ringing. I ran to answer it, and it was my Mother calling from work. She told me to turn on the television, so I, still not knowing what was going on, turned on the T.V. just in time to see the second airplane smash heartlessly into the WTC. I wanted to cry, throw up and scream all at once. The words I use cannot even begin to describe the depth of the feelings I felt as I watched this horrifying sight. Disbelief: How could a human being do something like this to other human beings? Horror: This is real! Those airplanes actually smashed into the World Trade Center towers. Sick inside: I saw people jumping out the windows in a desperate panic to escape, only to plummet to their deaths below. I cry to even think of how frightening those last few moments must have been. Fear: Yesterday I lived in a world where I felt safe. Today I quickly realize how fragile life really is, and that terrible things can happen to anyone, anywhere. On September 17, 2001 I took my first flight in an airplane to go to my new home in Alaska. Leaving my family and everything I knew behind, seven months pregnant, carrying an 18-month old child, all alone past the security point, and going to a place where I had never been, to start a new life from scratch, on top of going in an airplane for my first flight, and after the attacks, you can easily guess I was pretty nervous and saddened. I had to choke back the tears as I watched my family disappear behind the security gates, not knowing when I would ever see them again. It was a very difficult and heavy time in my life and in the nation. Now a year later, I can look back on that period of my life and know that I am stronger. We made it through the storm. We have experienced a renewed sense of faith in God, and have stood in a united front. We have our freedom implanted in our hearts, and nobody, no airplane, nothing can take that away from us.
