Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Chris Cordaro As I entered my third period classroom a most disturbing sight befell my eyes. I observed a flaming tower. In the clamor about me I heard that a plane had unintentionally collided with the great structure. I still had no real sense of what was unfolding when my instructor turned off the monitor and began the lesson as he normally would. As I stepped into my fourth period study hall I was still unaware of the gravity of what was occurring. As I entered I saw my teacher and several classmates gazing awestruck at the monitor. In joining them I saw a second plane strike what I recognized as one of the World Trade Center Towers. I listened in terror as the full situation was laid before me by the newscaster. Three separate planes had launched an assault on the trade towers and one upon the pentagon. Mere minutes later I watched in shock as the towers disintegrated without warning. The dust seemed to engulf the whole of New York City and camera shots were a cloud of gray. As the dust settled and the immediate danger had passed a search was already begun for those who had committed the most abominable of acts. I was shocked that this search and anger had begun prior even to grieving for those who perished. Televisions in all remaining classes were tuned to news stations while my classmates and I sat anticipating the next event in the horrific sequence. Little occurred other than the government saying the blame rested on the shoulders of Bin Laden and the governing body of Afghanistan. I returned home to an awestruck family. My father seemed anxious as he consoled my distrait mother. All media outlets enduringly reported the latest developments for several days. Yet eventually this ceased, as did the overbearing nationalism that had been caused by the atrocities. At present all seems to have returned to its typical state. This although comfortable leaves us exposed to more attacks such as those that occurred. It is clear that much must be altered in order to prevent such occurrences in the future. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Tunnel Vision The arrival of my Ez Pass statement is usually greeted with hardly a glance. But the October statement was different. I opened it up, scrolled down with my finger and found the date, 9/11. The statement read 8:58.16 as the time when I paid the toll to enter the Battery Tunnel. There would be no such record of when I received my car, but it was four in the afternoon when a Port Authority employee drove it back out and my day at the mouth of the tunnel was over. It would be months before I was in the tunnel again. It was a sparkling September day and by 8:35am I was already giving my Bichon Frise, Olivia, her second walk of the day. I had stopped to chat with a neighbor and when I realized the time, I knew I had to hurry. I had a 9:30 appointment at the Tribeca office, commonly referred to by its address, "99 Hudson." I had the news on in the car. By the time I was a few blocks from the Prospect Expressway the reporter came on with a bulletin, "some explosion or plane crash" had occurred in one of the Twin towers. A "hole" in the upper part of the building was being reported. I didn?t give it much thought; accidents happen. What a mess it would be getting into the office. Approaching the BQE (Brooklyn Queens Expressway), the road becomes elevated to meet the approach to the tunnel. Traffic had slowed down and I was still at the bottom of the "hill" and all I could see was heavy smoke in the sky. When I came to the top of the hill the picture was clear. The top of one of the towers had a gaping hole the size of an opening to an old fashioned airplane hanger and a river size stream of smoke was spewing into the cloudless skyline of Manhattan. My thoughts were still foolishly on how I would navigate this traffic disaster. (I?ll take the FDR, come around the tip of Manhattan and approach the office from there; hopefully avoiding what I knew would be a rush of emergency vehicles.) Everyone around me still seemed to be intent on the same goal, getting into Manhattan. The information from the radio was fast paced even though traffic was barely moving. I was able to get into an EzPass lane and inch my way toward the tunnel. At 8:58:16 I was through the tollbooth. The cars moved ever so slowly but we were proceeding. About halfway through the tunnel we came to a complete stop. The radio report kept repeating that a plane had crashed into "tower one". I felt annoyed, what is this crap about "tower" one. It was one of the towers that were hit, All right! I was distracted from my annoyance by people walking in the Tunnel towards Manhattan. My cell phone rang and I was greeted with a worried question from my wife. "Where are you?" I told her I was sitting in my car in the Battery tunnel waiting to exit at the Manhattan side. She said that one of the twin towers was ablaze and that they could see the smoke from their school located on the Kingsboro CC campus. I told her that my radio was working in the tunnel and was keeping me posted on the latest events. She pleadingly told me to get out of there. I said once I got on the Manhattan side I would turn around and go home. I told her I was fine and not to worry and I would call her as soon as I was out of the tunnel. Within minutes the radio announcer reported that a second plane had hit the other tower and all illusions of an accident disappeared. I was a little bit hungry, so I started on the substantial slice of banana cake my wife had baked. I had also brought a good supply of homegrown figs to share with my colleagues. The fig count was dwindling. The guy in the van next to me opened his window and yelled over to me that the Pentagon had been bombed also. I acknowledged him and told him I also heard it on the radio. What the hell was going on? We would hear and see soon enough. All of a sudden yelling noises could be heard, soon followed by a crowd of people running back toward the Brooklyn side. Some were screaming; "Get out of your car! Get out of your car." As the crowd got larger and larger so did the smoke that seemed to be attached to them. I closed my windows as the panic and smoke passed my car. I was determined to stay calm. As the tunnel became darker and darker I thought, don?t tell me I?m going to die in this f------ place. I got my briefcase, put my remaining figs into it and decided to leave the car. I placed my car keys in my coat pocket and began walking toward Brooklyn between abandoned cars. Within a minute of walking there were no more cars, just an empty tunnel, as people continued to run past me. I saw a man in a wheelchair and asked him if he needed assistance. He barely acknowledged me as he whizzed past me moving faster than I ever could have. People were climbing onto the path and pushing and shoving into the openings in the tunnel usually reserved for tunnel personnel. I continued on my own pace even though the smoke was getting heavier and heavier. A person marched past me and inquired if I was ok. I told him I was fine and he continued to walk with me. I said I was in no shape to run out of the tunnel and that he could proceed at his pace if he wished. He said he was glad to have the company. So we coughed and talked and walked and walked. We could see but it was very smoky; the Brooklyn side was nowhere in sight. We shared what we had heard and continued to walk and to our delight the tunnel seemed to becoming clearer. The sight of fireman jogging in our direction was even more reassuring, even with their oxygen gear on. We said we were ok and wished them luck as they headed further into the tunnel. As we came around one of the bends in the tunnel we could see the light of Brooklyn. We shook hands and said good luck to each other as we entered the tunnel plaza. It seemed like it was snowing out, but the sky was gray. The whole area was filled with people, ambulances, police and fire personnel asking if we needed oxygen or water. We were directed to see one of the police officers who were collecting car keys and information. Some of the people standing around were covered with a layer of dust reminiscent of someone undergoing a tribal ritual. As we got further into the plaza the "snow" was diminishing. I tried to phone my wife, but the phone was not operable. I stood around and watched a scene that looked like the movie set of a disaster area. Tell us your story: Having flown into Detroit on September 10, 2001, a colleague and I were at the Marriott Hotel in Southfield for a 3-day conference. The conference began at 8:00 a.m. and before 9 a.m. one of the attendees had gone through the lobby where the television was showing pictures of the World Trade Center. She came back to tell the rest of us (approximately 10 people were at the conference) and we all went back out to the lobby, where we sat glued to the television for quite some time. The conference leader was reluctant to call us away, but for the most part we stuck to our schedule until the conference was over on September 13, 2001. My colleague and I were scheduled to fly out of Detroit Metro Airport at 7 p.m. on that Thursday, the 13th. As luck -- or something -- would have it, Detroit Metro, which had been shut down since the time of the first attack, was scheduled to re-open for flights at 7 p.m. We thought we were incredibly lucky. We got to the airport far ahead of our departure time; people were going through security quite slowly, but in an orderly fashion. One of the other conference attendees had a small pair of tweezers in her purse, and they were confiscated. We proceeded to our gate area after grabbing a bite to eat, and had a rather lengthy wait in an eerily empty area. There were perhaps 15 other people that we could see from our seats. One of the people was a security officer with a bomb-sniffing dog. At the appointed time, we boarded our plane and sat down. There were two other people on the plane, for a grand total of four. It was very strange. We sat and waited, but nothing happened. Finally, we were told to exit and airplane and go to the counter area, where we would be issued tickets for the following day's flight (which would have been Friday). We were also told to go to the luggage carousel area, where we found literally hundreds of people hoping to retrieve their bags. It was done in a very unworkable fashion -- you were to work your way to the front of the "line", such as it was, and give your ticket to airport personnel who would then find your luggage. When we saw what was happening, we made the decision to leave our luggage behind, rent a car, and drive back to Indianapolis. After an uneventful trip home, I took Friday off to just sit and think about the weeks' events. Having been away from family and friends when 9/11 happened, it wasn't as real to me as it was once I got home again. I did not realize how much time I had been silently praying, "Just get me home again." It doesn't seem possible that a year has now gone by. Just as with November 22, 1963, I will forever remember where I was and what I was doing on September 11, 2001. We were at a repelling obstacle course when we heard rumors about "bombs" or "explosions" in NYC. We didn't know what to think. When we got back to the Company, our Commander, told us what happened. It was unbelieveable. My fellow soldiers and I were thinking that they were making it up. We all thought that by them tell us this, that we'd be prepared to handle war, thus making us motivated to complete BCT. However, when they brought us into the conference room and showed us the video, we knew that there was something terribly wrong. But we all remained strong. We knew that we ARE soldiers and that our dedication to this country will overcome anything. I knew it right then, that I had a call. I knew what I had to do. In July of 2002, my unit deployed to Afghanistan and we did great things. We brought these terrorists to justice. On September 11th 2002, I remembered everything that happened a year ago, when America had to call 911. I called my mother and told her I was okay. In September of 2003, my unit deployed to Iraq and we did great things. We brought these terrorists to justice. On September 11th 2003, I remembered everything that happened two years ago, when America had to call 911. I called my mother and told her I was okay. On the morning of September 11, 2001 I was on my way to bring my boys to school. I turned on the radio in the car and heard nothing but tragidy. I remember at that moment being in pure shock. I could never believe something like this could happen to so many lives. I could have never emagined it happening to us as Amaricans. that day my five along with millions of others changed. I now more then ever realize really how valuable life is. So many people lost their lives that day. And so many others were scared for life. today on the one year anniversary of that tragic day, nothing has gotten any easier. Tell us your story: I was at home getting ready to attend a meeting in Jersey City, New Jersey, when my son Daniel came running upstairs to tell me that a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center. My first reaction was pilot error, then I thought no on is that off on take off or landing. When the second plane hit the other tower then a sick feeling came over me.I rushed to the school where my children were and took them from school.We all needed to be together. My older daughter Melissa was at college. We called and asked if she wanted to come home and she said that everything was ok and that she was going to stay and see what happens. We had a few friends that worked in the buildings, they all made it home safe to be with there family's. They are all very lucky. My heart goes out to all the people that lost there life and there family. This is something that i've not been able to get over. Our life can be over just that fast. I remember her saying she wished this had never happend. While I might not have been directly affected or lost anyone in the attacks. I still grieve for the lost and thier family's & our Nation, And I appreciate even more the freedom we have. We will never forget 9/11/01, & we will continue to grow strong & stay united. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I thought it was just another Tuesday morning when I woke up to get ready for school. I didn't have a radio or tv on when I was getting ready because I was already late for class. I jumped in my car and headed up 123 when I heard the first report on the radio station 95.5. At first they said there was a possible fire at the pentagon and then aout 5 minutes later they confirmed a plne had crashed into the pentagon. My first thouht was a plane was trying to land at Regan National and the pilot lost control or there was a malfunction in the engine. Then not even 10 minutes later they reported a plan hitting the north tower of the World Trade Center. When I heard that, my first reaction was t look up in the sky because at that point I didn't know what to think. Then a seond plane hit the other tower and tears came to my eyes. I just thought of all those innocent people working in all three buildings. I one thing that really sticks in my mind is as soon as pulled up to school and parked my car, the radio reported that one of the building completely collapsed and I was paralized in shock. All I could think about was the fmilies of those poor innocent victims. As I was walking up school I was unsure if anybody had heard the horrible news. When walked into the Johnson Center I approached my friends and all of them had no idea what I was takling about. I explained the situation and after I finished all of them got on their cell phones and phoned thier family member because most of them were from New York. Three out of the four people I told the stories to parents worked within 3 blocks of ground zero I walked to the back of the JC where the televisions are and that is where about 100 kids were standing, some were in shock and some were in total disbelief. September 11, 2001 is a day that will never be forgotten by any AMerican. As I write this essay I have goose bumps all over my body and tears in my eyes. I am going to end by sending all my prayers out to the families who lost loved ones inn this horrific travisty and send my strengh to the ones who are over seas fighting for America. I woke up late from my slumber and ate a hearty breakfest. I began to watch the news with my family. Same old morning. I remember the terror. I remember the fear. The tv news reporter was telling the world good morning when a news flash came in. A plane had crashed into the 1st world trade center. While America was fear struck and still shocked after the biggest attack on their homeland. Another bombshell was being delivered. A second plane had flew into the second tower. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11th, 2001, I was driving on my way to work. It was about 6:15AM Pacific Time. I turned on my radio, and the program was interupted for the bulletin. It first described the plane crashing into the World Trade Center as a light plane. They were discussing how well the building was constructed, and how it could withstand a plane crashing into it. Then about 15 minutes later, they changed that to a jet airliner. Then, in about another five minutes, they were saying that reports from the east coast were saying that another jet has crashed into the other tower. They were also saying smoke was comming up from behind the Pentagon. The announcer said, and I quote, "I think America is under a terrorist attack in New York City, and Wshington D.C.", "Of course this is not an official statement, just my thoughts". I was thinking, well something was happening, and this was no accident. No Way! I then drove to the nearest Hotel, because they have so many Television sets. At around 7:15A.M.Pacific time, shortly after I arrived, the South Tower (I think), came crashing down. It was just unbelievable to me at the time (and everyone else there in the room), that this could happen here. I was disgusted by the sheer magnitude of the killing, and injuries there were. The people on the planes, their families... All those who lived in that area must have been in shock. When I called back to New Jersey to tell my mother in law, sha was just getting up, and making the morning coffe, when I told her to turn on her T.V. She was totally unaware that anything had even happened. By being three hours behind we were getting the news very early in the morning here in Nevada. What a day that turned out to be. Slowly, the entire area was talking about it, and that was all that was on all the stations, on the radio, and T.V. Over and over they showed those planes crashing. Defenitely a day that I will hold on to till I die. I just wanted to add to all those affected by this, I give you my deepest sympathy, and prayers. Time to get up and wake the girls up for school.I remember how still and fresh the fall morning air was.It was going to be a beautiful day. Arriving to work at the local television station, myself and the news supervisior were to drive 6o miles south to our station in Fort Smith for a department head meeting. Driving down on that beautiful sunny morning we were talking about the day ahead of us,with our local NPR station news playing in the background. Suddenly, we both stopped our chatter and started listening when we heard of breaking news of a airplane crashing into one of the twin towers in New York. We started talking about the no fly zone that is around the towers and wonder what could of happened. As we enter the station we noticed everyone was watching the televisions and trying to figure out what was going on. As we enter the conference room and settled in our chairs the receptonist enter and said that the other tower was hit and so was the Pentagon, that we seemed to be under attack. The General Manager dismissed everyone back to there departments and plan on what we could do locally. Steve and I drove back up to the Northwest station and started to work on local stories. I still remember walking outside and how quit it was and looking up at the sky and not seeing any con-trails. The air was still and I could not even hear a car on the road. It was like a ghost town around me.At the end of the day when I picked up my daughters, I remember giving them the biggest of hugs and alot of kisses. September 11th,2001 changed my life! I had just awakened, got dressed for work, and came downstairs with my twin sister. I turned on our local news (I do this every morning; it helps me to wake up. Now, I wish I hadn't watched it...but would have that changed anything??) It was around 7:45 a.m. CST; and the usual news, weather and sports was on...an ordinary day, until a breaking news story caught my attention. Seems an airplane had accidently run into one of the World Trade Center Towers in New York City...I'd always wanted to go to New York City, and loved looking at pictures of the Twin Towers. I thought they were beautiful. We both expressed shock and horror at the first scenes of a huge hole in the side of one of the Towers, and we both said a prayer. I mentioned that it was bound to happen, because planes fly around tall buildings all the time...Love Field is located right in the middle of downtown Dallas. Then here came the second plane. IT DELIBERATELY ANGLED IN AND HIT THE SECOND TOWER. Right then, I knew. This was no accident...we were under attack. A sick feeling of shock...fear...horror and unbelief. NO WAY, MAN. NOT HERE. NOT in the United States...not IN the UNITED STATES!! I had to go to work, so I didn't get to watch any more of the news until much later that evening. My twin sister was so saddened by what she had seen, she turned off the television and cried. She was scared...what would happen next? She refused to watch. When I got home from work later on that day (by then, I had learned that the Towers had fallen, the Pentagon had been attacked, and another plane had gone down, through word of mouth), my twin sister was still scared and upset, so we decided to go to church. She was delivered from a spirit of fear. We had a bite to eat and then came home; she went to bed, and thankfully, slept peacefully. NOT ME. I turned on the t.v. and sat there for three straight hours, watching the day's events replay over and over and over and over again, searing into my mind. The planes hitting. The bursts of smoke and flame. Paper and God knows what else falling like confetti. People jumping for their lives...WHAT CHOICE WERE THEY GIVEN? The Towers falling--first one, then the other. The awful cloud of smoke and dust chasing people down the streets. The looks of panic and horror on everyone's faces. The sight of Congress singing "God bless America" on the Capital steps. The steely-eyed look of resolve and determination on our President's face. I saw all of this and more...and I cried like never before. Words started filling my mind, and the first of many poems was born that day. God gave me an unexpected blessing, you see. He gave me a Gift for writing. Before September 11's horror, I would hold everything in, whatever my emotion...especially if I were sad and angry. It would sit there and fester like a raging infection, sometimes for years, building and building until something would set me off. I was mean and nasty. September 11 changed all that. When nightmares wake me up, or I wake up with some ideas in my head, I write them down. Now, I release my emotions onto paper or onto my web page on Author's Den. It has calmed me considerably. I am more able to express myself effectively; I don't feel angry and bitter all of the time. As of this time, I've written over 200 poems, and over 50 articles. Several of them deal with September 11. Two of my poems have been published. That's nice, but the biggest blessing is that it lets me express my emotions in a way I had never done before, no matter what it is. Where was I on September 11? I'll never forget it...and I'll always remember. I know where I was when Kennedy was shot, when man first landed on the moon, when Elvis died, when the Challenger exploded, when the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed...and now, when America was attacked. He was sitting in his truck waiting for permission to drive home and wanted us to know that he was alright. We heard another voice in the distance, but ignored it. All of a sudden Bill said, "I gotta go." Not wanting to let go of the connection, my wife said something else. (I don't recall what)He then said, quite sternly, I have to go. About twenty minutes later he called again. He told me that it was a police officer and he started interegating him. Asking what he was doing there & who he was talking to and why. The officer didn't believe him when he told him he was calling his family. After Bill explained that he wasn't able to get home to his family and needed to let them know he was alright and to make sure we were alright, the officer calmed down and appologized. Apparently a truck matching his truck's description was suppossedly carrying items used to make explosives. The whole world was terrorized by this unexcusable event. We will hold dear to our hearts the brave police officers, firefighters, and all others who worked to save the victims, help their families, and protect all of our country's citizens. It seemed like any other day. I woke up at 5:30 AM (like always) to get ready to go to school. I met my firend at the fence, which became out daily ritual, so that we would walk tot hte bus together. We talked while waiting for the bus and when it came, we simply got on and went to school. At school everyone walked around the hallways like zombies because all of us knew that it was way to early for anyone to be awake, much less at school; all of us just wanted to go home. Finally, the bell rang and all of the students went scurrying to calss; i went to Chemistry. After chemistry, the bell rung once again at 9:25, and i set off to go to spanish class. I remember that my teachear seemed different and kept floating from our roon to the roon across the hallwayto talk to the other teacher. After conversing with the other teacher, our teacher walked in stunned and in some what disbelief; she told us what had happened. She explained that the World Trade Center ahd beenhit by planes, the class was in shock and confusion. OUr teacher then turned on the TV and put on the news, and at that moment we realized what had REALLY happened. The news channel had split the screen inhalf, on half had the picture of the Twin Towers burning, and the other half had the picture of the Pentagon of fire. The images that were put before us seemed so unreal and scary. Many of the students from this area come from military families, so most of thier parents work in the Pentagon. Consequently, some girls in my class cried of panic and fear not knowing where their parents were. One of the girls from our class, as well as many toher students from other classes, went to the guidance office to try to get a hold of her parents. Through all of this, the rest of the class as still in awe of what they were watching. I was frightened not only for the other people that were in danger, but also for my family. My uncle and my aunt work in NYC, and my cousin, at the time was going to college in the city. I was worried about them as well as for my dad who works in D.C. All of a sudden, I remember looking at the screen and seeing more smoke coming from the Twin Towers than usual, and right at that moment the tower crumbled to the floor. The TV screen blew up the picture of the WTC so that it filled up the whole screen. I saw the tower fall live; it is a lasting image that I know that I weill never forget. As the tower crumbled, I began to cry. It was just absolutely awful. The rest of the day seemed like a dream; it was all a blur. Now that I look back, I realized that even though much chaos resulted from such a catastrophe, there were also some good things that resulted from it too. Our nation as a whole came together and united as one to fighta gainst terrorism. Also, I don't believe that anyone has seen our contry be more patriotic than it was that week and the many days to floolow. All of us heard many movind stories of people who died, people who almost died, and heroes who gave up their lives to save others, but in the end, we eventually (though slowly) moved on and simply became stronger and more unified country. On my way home from my doctor's appointment, I heard on the radio that the twin towers had been bombed by planes. I came home and told my wife to turn on the T.V., with tears in my eyes. Then I called my Dad, and while I was on the phone we both watched in horror as the twin towers crumbled. Then I learned via CNN, that the Pentagon was bombed by another plane. Fearing for my children's safety, I rushed to both of their schools to pick them up. After we were all together, we all learned about Flight 93 crashing at Shanksville, Pennsylvania. It has changed for me because, even doing simple things like driving,walking,etc., I was taking things for granted. Now, everything I do and everything my family does, is taken with precaution, constantly watching our backs, our surroundings (which we shouldn't have to do). But I will tell you this, they caught us with our pants down, but rest assured they'll pay. Q3. What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? First we should all remember the victims. Secondly we should remember all the heroes for example, Governor Pataki, Mayor Guliani, Port Authority, Paramedics, the firefighters, the policemen, the steelworkers, the military, the passengers of Flight 93 and President Bush, through his leadership the country was able to slowly but surely rebound from that day's horrific acts. Yes I did, and no my feelings for the American flag have not changed and never will change, because I am a true American and so is my family, we respect the flag for what it stands for, freedom! The one thing that I am glad about that terrible day is , that it opened up a lot of eyes about patriotism, and I hope it never goes away. I was going to classes doing work and learning, not knowing what was going on the world at that time. It was an ordinary day: nice, cool, and great; very beautiful. Who was to know what was going to unfold onto the people of America. I first noticed something when people started leaving their classes I was in which was Social Studies. Then, more and more people started to leave. At that time, I felt a little queezy because this was not a regular thing to see. My class and I were starting to ask questions in which Mrs. Waitt had no answers for. The only thing she said is that there was a national threat. When I heard this, I was quite upset. The first thing that came to mind is that there was a nuclear attack which could be very bad. At lunch, one of my friends said that the World Trade Center was bombed and had fallen down. I was very, very freightened by that because America would wage war on the country that did that. I then asked who told him that and he said it was a teacher whom I asked right after. She then varified that which at that time I felt even worse. After recess, we were all brought to the gym to hear an anouncement about the attacks. We had many questions that were unanswered because there was insufficent supply of facts. My friends, including me, felt very bad and wanted to go home to see what happened. During this time, I felt very bad and did not want to do anything but go home. It is hard to descibe the feelings I felt for they were so in depth, so real, words can not describe it alone. I thought it was a horrible movie, it just could not be real. During the day I felt so grateful to live in our country that this experience is an unusual one. How horrible to live in the middle east and other areas of the world where terrorism is a daily occurance. I am so grateful for the little things in life. As Sheryl Crow says "It's not having what you want, it's wanting what you've got."
