But I was in the class that first heard what had happened. I was in my Ancient History class when my teacher was about to turn the television to channel 3 so we could watch a movie on the Egyptians. But when he turned on the television it was on channel 42, CNN. And what our class saw was the most disturbing thing we had ever seen. They were showing in slow motion the first plane hitting the World Trade Center. I was asking myself, ?is this real?? Then they showed the building after the first one hit. And after a while, there was one thing we all saw. We all saw the second plane hit the World Trade Center. My class all watched one of the towers crumble to the ground. I was so shocked and scared. After all this we heard about the plane crashing at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania. The whole school was scared that maybe a plane was going to crash and hit the school. My mother was so scared also because when she heard World Trade Center she thought it was the one in Boston. She was scared because my stepfather was right near the Trade Center in Boston doing the electrical things he does. When everyone in my home got home everyone could breathe. I would have to say seeing what I saw on that day was the scarcest moment in my whole life. This happened often so I wasn't expecting what he was about to tell us. When he came back in, he said a plane just hit the world trade center, proceeding to say that it may be a "kamikaze" plane. I was thinking yeah right, noone would do that to our country, it was probably just an accident or something. (I am 21 years old, and have never experienced a terror attack or anything close to it.) As he continued to teach, another teacher motioned for my teacher to go out again, then I got a little nervous. This time when he came back he said class is dismissed, another plane hit the other tower and the every college (state building) is being sent home. I couldn't believe it. When I left, I listened to my car radio in disbelief as they talked of maybe up to 8 planes that were unaccounted for. As the day went on I just cried thinking of all the lives that were lost and all the heroes of that day. I am so proud to be an American. The terrorist will pay for their evil acts. United we stand! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My sister was Lisa Trerotola, Lisa worked on the 64th floor of tower #1 with the Port Authority of NY & NJ, the TB&T dept. My lovely sister was a person that every one loved, when you met Lisa it seemed as if you new her for ever. On that tragic and devastating day, lisa was amoung 15 other co workers two of which survived coming down stair well B. The last words my Dad had with Lisa was, Dad I have to go, I have to go, and to this day my father has to live with those last words every day. It is now a year and a couple of months and it feels like this is a bad dream and I will wake up and it would be a horrable one. For me, my sister was a jewel and other people in this world should be so lucky as I was to have Lisa in my life. The fond memories that I have no one could ever take from me. You took our hearts and broke them, but our love of each other and our soul will live on forever. The group that was responsible for September 11th, 2001 your judgement day will come, no one on this earth could ever tell me there was a reason for taking inosent lives that tragic day. Because no religon or god would ever allow this to happen in there name. My sisters tragic death was not going to let me become bitter with hatred and it is so easy to do, instead I must be strong for my family and teach my children not to hate as other do. I have enough sorrow every time I look into my parent eyes and my neice and nephews eyes and the rest of my familys, knowing lisa is gone. And how much I had to look forward to Michael and lisa and the twins and my family grow old together. I feel my sisters presents every day with me and that is what is keeping me going with my loving wife and children. For the people who had jelous feelings because of our close knit family. I was walking in the hall and all I heard was that we were going to all die. At first i thought it was just a joke. Then i went into my class and the t.v's were all on. People in the class broke out in tears.Some of them had family which were in the buildings. My boyfriend, whom I live with and also works as a Pricing coordinator, had to be at work at 7am. I didn't have to be there until 10:30am, but since I didn't have my drivers license at the time I had to ride in with him. I planned on sitting in the car listening to the radio until around 9am, when he had to leave to go to class at a college nearby. He would return to work after his class was over. Shortly after 8:30, he came out to the car and I kissed him goodbye, telling him I would see him when he got back. I went in to go to the breakroom where we have a television planning to watch tv until I had to clock in to work. When I went in one of our baggers named Wally was sitting at a table in front of the tv. "A plane has hit one of the World Trade Towers." he told me. I sat down, thinking it was a small plane, and it was an accident. I think we were watching Good Morning America, something like that, and the anchor was speaking on the phone to a lady who was in a nearby buisness building. She was telling what she could see from her view, as we watched the towers burning on our screen from a similar view to hers. Suddenly, we saw a speck off to the side and both of us said at the same time, "What's that?" You could then hear the lady and her coworkers screaming in terror, "Oh my God, another plane!" and boom, we saw it hit right before our eyes. Then I knew, this was no accident, and I began to long for my boyfriend. I needed to be near him. We watched in horror as the towers burned, and I began to cry. I am only 20 years old, I wasn't alive during WW2, and I was only a child during the Gulf War. I can, however, remember seeing it on tv, and since I was so young I remember hiding underneath my bed thinking I was safe from all the bombing if it ever came here to Kentucky. I didn't know any better. Now its a little different. I know my bed won't save me from any bombs. But I am still terrified of the very thought of war. Seeing those towers burning made me realize this meant war, and although it may be a good reason for war, for some, I just dont want to go through what my parents went through in WW2. In fact I don't believe any one should ever have to go through that again. Shortly after, we saw that the Pentagon had been the next target. I really got frightened, and began to pray to God to make these people stop. The plane then crashed in Pennsylvania, and people were saying there were others heading for Camp David and the Capitol. All these rumors were flying, then someone mentioned that Disney World had been closed and evacuated. I remembered that my manager was there on vacation and I became worried about her. I also had to laugh a little because I knew she was probably extremely mad; something always happens to her vacations! My boyfriend then returned from class. He knew what had happened but didn't know any details, and was unaware of all the nasty rumors. (Lucky for him) Some of the older guys at my work had been around at the time of WW2. One had been drafted. And they all began talking about the draft, that they would take anyone over the age of 18. I know the draft was abolished, but it still bothered me. I have a 18 year old brother, my boyfriend is 22 years old, and I graduated with many boys and girls who went into the military. I have a friend who is pregnant and married to a man in the navy. My sister had just given birth to my nephew, and a coworker who was a very good friend was pregnant and due in a few months. It terrifies me to think that they could be drafted, or that my friends could have to fight in this war, or that these children would be brought into a world filled with war and be tagged as a war child like my mother. I guess I just cry for peace too much, but too much just doesn't seem to be enough. For the rest of the day we were glued to the tv like flys on glue paper. We saw the towers fall, and the people cry. We saw tons of pictures of loved ones who were lost or missing. Out of an 8 hour work day I worked for about an hour total, all in between running back and forth between the tv in our breakroom, the tv in our pharmacy and the phone to call my mom. And for the next few weeks our television set was always on Fox News or MSNBC or CNN. Until finally I got tired of seeing the same thing over and over again. Either it was the towers falling, or the haunting image of the second plane slamming into the second tower. That will haunt me for the rest of my life, just like Pearl Harbor haunts others. I can actually say I saw the second plane hit. I may not have been there in New York, but I still saw it happen. And it still follows me and scares me. Soon I got tired of hearing that they were "Closing in on Bin Laden" "Bin Laden is most likely dead in a cave somewhere." to me it was all blah blah blah. I felt that the media and government were trying to ease all of our fears, but not many people are stupid enough to believe it after we heave heard it over and over again. Instead it was just creating more fear. That is when I turned off the tv, and began to go on with life just as I should. I was still scared, but when the tv would show more coverage of 9-11 and Afghanistan, I would go walking or read a magazine, providing it wasn't filled with stories of 9-11. And gradually, things got easier. Yesterday, the anniversary of 9-11, I worked again just like last year, but did everything I could to stay away from the televisions. After work, I went downtown to a local memorial and left 3 votive candles, a red, white and blue. I then went to the most beautiful church I have ever been in and prayed. Then I went home and went to bed. And I felt much better this year, than I would have if I would have turned on my tv. In 2002 my wife, Deloris and I, were playing in the tournament. Just shortly before noon the foursome I was with finished the 9th hole and went into the club house to get a drink and sandwich before finishing the back nine. When we got in the club house we noticed everyone glued to the TV set. That was my first notice of the attacks. Being military retirees the comments being made cannot be repeated here. Suffice to say that they consisted of explaining what was to happen to the lowlifes who caused the attack. We were all told to go out and finish the round and we would be given more information when we came in. We all knew that the tournament was over and the military would be going on full alert. Needless to say we were not too interested in playing golf. Our group played the 10th hole and then returned to the club house to watch the news. I was in our Estimating department of Hodess Building Company on the 11th of september. I remember an announcement coming over the PA that we were all to report to the board room as something has happened. An incident like this was the furthest from my mind. I thought something was going on in another country and we were involved. I reported as told and saw the gruesome scene of the Buildings on fire, smoke billowing out in thick black clouds. I was in shock. I could not believe what I was seeing. I went to my desk silently and started to pray for them. It was around 23 days after September 11th when I began to piece together a puzzle that I would never have thought possible for my life. Before 911, there was a new hire down stairs in the MIS department. He would take the head of MIS and replace the old MIS person. Karl was telling stories to Luke about his sisters occupation. His sister, worked for NORAD as a Leutenant. She was in Florence, the headquarters responsible for monitoring and notifying in case of attack, more specifically, they were watching for airline hijackings as well as foriegn bombers, missiles etc. their job was to watch the skies against attack. They had failed. Karl invited me into his office 23 or so days after the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. I viewed an email that his sister had written. In this email detailed everything that happened at their base on that day. she said that "they knew about the planes being off course" and they also knew they were hijacked. They did not react. They knew for 15 minutes. They had a squack 7500 emitting from the planes and failed to launch the airplanes to intercept the airliners or to escort them to a runway. I suspect that Karl was under diress and his sister stalled the launch of fighter jets to save his life. I know that this sounds strange and surreal, yet, I cannot understand why they would not launch if they knew. this secret has been robbing me of sleep and happiness. I am hoping that it becomes public so all of America will know how bad it really is and how weak we really were. We need to come together and prevent this from ever happening again. I was going in to take a shower when my wife called me from the living room to tell me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I knew a plane had hit the Empire State Building in the forties and nothing too bad had happened so I figured that some tourist plane had accidently hit the building. I walked into my living room and looked at the tv and I noticed right away that both buildings were burning. I knew that this could not have happened from one plane so right away I knew that this was not an accident. I started watching the news then I called my father so he could watch it too. He was as shocked as I was. As I was watching it we started hearing about other planes crashing and missing. We lived right in the flight path of LaGuardia Airport so my wife and I started getting very nervous. I then called downstairs to talk to my friend and as we were talking on the phone I was watching the news and they were doing some interview and all of a sudden there was a loud explosion and we couldn't see the World Trade Center any more. I thought it was because of the dust but my neighbor kept saying "What happened to the tower? Where is it?" I couldn't believe that it fell so I kept staring hard at the set hoping somehow through the dust I would be able to see it. I mean it couldn't collapse it just couldn't. I hung up from my friend and kept watching the news. Shortly afterward the second tower stared to collapse and all I could do was yell "NO, NO, NO". I work in a hospital in New York City and know a lot of firemen, police and EMTs. All I could think of were all the innocent people I knew who were most certainly killed right now. My wife and I both broke down in tears. For the rest of the day I didn't leave the couch. I sat there in my robe unable to move for hours. Finally around 2:30 I was able to shower but every few minutes I would still start crying. The next day I went to work and my hospital overlooked Manhattan. I had to force myself to look. There it was a column of smoke coming up from where the World Trade Center used to be. It was unbelievable. The people at work were just going through the paces. Nobody could concentrate. We were all like robots. One of the people who works in my department is a captain in the fire department and nobody knew what had happened to him. When it was all over I found out that the man in my department was wounded but he will be ok. Another firefighter I knew was dead. Six people at work lost husbands or fathers with one woman losing both her father and husband. To this day I still tear up about this. HBO had a special about it and I cried through most it. While typing this I keep tearing up. Today is the anniversary. I didn't want to work but I knew that if I didn't that I would just stay home and probably cry all day. We had a memorial at work and I started crying. I've done more crying this year than I have done in my entire life and I don't know when it will stop. A part of my heart was torn out when those towers went down and I don't think I will ever get over it. It was the most picture perfect sunny day that I can ever remember. There wasn't a cloud in the sky and the sky was endlessly blue. I remember thinking it was just too beautiful to go anywhere. As I watched the plane strike the World Trade Tower I was frozen in disbelief. Then when the second plane hit it was a feeling of such utter shock and horror that I still can't find the words to descibe that moment. I was frozen in time. Then I thought about my youngest child,Sarah, who was living in New York and should have been on the subway to school. Her answering machine picked up in the apartment. I left a positive message saying I was glad she was at school. I couldn't reach her by cell phone. I had to hear her voice. Still she couldn't be reached. My mind raced. All those people in the building. I called family members and friends. I just wanted to connect. What if this was the end? I knew it was the end. The end to a time and a way of being we had all known and taken for granted. Finally late in the day I heard Sarah's voice. It was so reassuring. I was so grateful and yet saddened with the knowledge of others who would not be so fortunate. I don't remember when I finally felt comfortable enough to turn off the TV. It was weeks. I felt compelled to stay informed. I was carrying heavy baggage. There was no relief. What had happened to the human race? So much violence and turmoil and pain. Would I ever feel light hearted again? Yes but not to the same extent. There is always that fear lurking just below the surface that something sinister is about to happen. I still get anxious if I miss the national news broadcast. I am cautious but more importantly I am also consciously grateful. I am grateful for every day, good, bad or in between. I feel especially lucky to be a woman living in a society that provides so much freedom of thought and expression. I am grateful for the love of family and friends. I see the blue sky. Tell us your story: I learned about the attack as it happened as a news flash on a salesman's blackberry pager; not quite believing a voice from across the hall that said the world trade center had been hit by a plane. We all left the meeting and turned on a television to watch. As events unfolded, I sat down to write the following letter. I sent it to a local paper but it was never published. I recently sent it to a New York Fireman who was one of the last to be pulled from the rubble. He found it profoundly comforting even a year later. I appreciate this opportunity to share my thoughts of that day. I had originally meant it to be anonymous at the time, the tone of this is clear, but now I feel that somehow that is a form of hiding behind a mass of other voices. It does not matter so much now either way. This is a forum for us to know each other in a way that ties us all together as caring human beings. Long after I am gone, it is comforting to know that someone might find my thoughts, along with so many others, as a testament to the never ending hope for peace. I am prouder now than ever to be an American but I am equally proud to be part of the world community that decries terrorism in any form. My name is Brad Sacha and this is what I thought that day: "As I listen and watch the news this day, I am profoundly reminded of my place on this earth. I am one of you. And like those of you who wonder why, I breathe and sigh and feel the world change around me as I write. I watch the images as they unfold in an instant media photo shock to the system. My stomach wrenches in unison with you as we all watch the reality of human misery mix with the incredible sights of individual selflessness and the heroism of those living the nightmare of searching for life while dust and fire still swirl around them. I want to be there to dig. I want to help pull rubble off the bodies. I yearn to stand next to you as we carry an unknown face from the heap and place the body on a stretcher so that someone who knows the innocent soul can lay claim and greave with proper respect. We share this desire as surely as we look to our children and savor their existence. I am far away. I cannot be there. Tell us your story: Like so many other Americans, I was nowhere near New York, Washington D.C., or that field in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. I was at home sleeping after having worked the night shift at the hospital that I am employed at. I remember waking up and looking at the television that I'd left on and thinking that instead of the Today Show that should have been on, somehow the channel must have been changed to a movie channel showing some action film. The images flashed before my eyes over and over of those two planes crashing into the World Trade Center, of the people terrified beyond explanation running away from the collapsing buildings, the news of the planes crashing into the Pentagon and into a field in Pennsylvania filled my ears. Slowly I came to realise this wasn't a movie, it wasn't even a nightmare. I sat there on my couch and watched the towers collapse and felt like my heart was being crushed. I knew I was watching thousands die right before my eyes. I was afraid for myself, for my family, for our country. All I wanted to do at that moment was surround myself with people that I loved, to hold them tight and never let go. It's been over a year now and remembering that day still brings back a little bit of the cold and fear, but more than anything else my heart is now filled with pride and love. I considered myself patriotic before 9/11 but now words can't describe how I feel about America. We are a strong and proud people that can find faith and hope in the face of the greatest adversity. I was supposed to fly out on that Tuesday, the 11th. I was also supposed to go visit New York that morning because the day before which was Monday the 10th was kind of a rainy day and we did other things. We thought that we would visit the towers and the Statue of Liberty before I flew out of Newark airport. Well, a good movie came on TV and chose to lie in bed and we thought we would go see the towers and Miss Liberty next time I flew in to New Jersey. Well, knowing me, if I went to the towers, I would have wanted to go to the top. I am so thankful and I thank God, that we did not visit New York that morning. When we checked out of hotel that morning we saw the news and it looked like it was a movie and we could not believe our eyes!! And my heart was just skipping beats. I instantly started to panic because everyone at home knew that where I was supposed to be that morning. My cell phone did not get any signal inside the hotel. When I did get signal there were over 12 phone calls. The last one was my mother. She had called twice and the last message that she had left she was very upset and yelling at me to call. I was very thankful that I did not visit New York that morning. I did stay at a friend's home and I helped the American Red Cross when I could. Tell us your story: Written on 9-11-02 My husband and I own an airplane service business (called an FBO for Fixed Based Operator) at the Burley airport in Idaho, which is a non-commercial general aviation airport. My husband had just gone on vacation to go hunting with friends, and that morning at about 6:50am I was discussing the day's work with our two mechanics in our office. There is a TV in the office that was turned on to FOX news, but the volume was low while we were talking. Suddenly one of the mechanics pointed to the TV; there was a tall building with smoke pouring out of it. I turned up the volume, and we stood there stunned and wondering how in the world an airplane could go into the building in such good weather and outside of all commercial flight routes. We were all watching it live a few minutes later when the second airplane hit, and then it was obvious without speaking that this was an intentional terrorist attack. About 20 minutes later, at 7:30am, I tried to call my husband at the cabin he was at, but they had already left to go hunting for the day, so I got the answering machine. Without any forethought, this is the message I left: "Hi guys. When you get back this evening, turn on the TV to a news channel - heck, probably any channel. The World Trade Center is no more, Osama Bin Laden just won." When I hung up, one of the mechanics looked at me kind of strange and said "Isn't that a bit of an exageration?" At the time I made that statement, both buildings were still standing. I told her I hoped I was wrong; but by the time my message was picked up that evening it had become true. To this day, I don't know why I said it that way on the answering machine. The hunters came home after that day; they lost interest in hunting. Shortly after 8:00am that morning I got a call from the FAA; the national airspace was closed; we could allow airplanes in the immediate area to land, but no one would be allowed to take off. They requested I call out on our Unicom frequency for any pilots flying to immediately land at the nearest airport. Fortunately, only one pilot got stuck at our airport. There is one other business at our airport, and I had to notify them of the air restriction, and ended up trying to tell them all of the events because they didn't have a TV or radio on. All the other person could say is "are you kidding??" after everything I said. I finally told him to go find a radio and verify it. That day I was glued to the TV as I watched one horror unfold after another. I will never forget the images I saw that day. Mere words cannot express the sadness for all the innocent people and familes that were killed or affected that fateful day. My brother, Gary Dalleske, a pilot, was at the Reno air races, all set to fly in his first formula 1 air race. The airspace was shut down before he even had a chance to qualify. The Reno air races were cancelled for the first time in it's 36 year history. My brother said he didn't care about racing anyway after what happened. He is racing this year in two airplanes, Blackjack 21 and 38 Special. While commercial aviation was able to resume after a few days, general aviation (small privately owned airplanes) were grounded for quite awhile. On September 18th we had to lay off our two mechanics because no one was coming in; our airport was effectively closed. No traffic=no money coming in=no payroll. Fortunately, our business had been totally paid off for two years, otherwise we would not have survived the business downturn. As it was, it was 12 months before my husband drew another paycheck out of the business. It's still just the two of us running it, 7 days a week. At least we're open; many similar FBO's like ours were forced to close down because of financial loss. I often wonder why general aviation small airplanes were so severely restricted, in some areas of the country for months, while commercial carriers were allowed to resume almost immediately. About 48,000 small airplanes and their pilots were stranded all over the country much longer. The government is bailing out the big commercial carriers that are going under; but not a penny to all the FBO businesses that were so badly affected, and those that closed. Our two mechanics eventually did find jobs at the China Lake Naval Facility in California, and are making better pay there then did here, but they miss Burley and they told us they want to come back here to retire (they are a husband and wife team). The FBI contacted me and I had to make up a list of all the information we had on file for all the students who had taken lessons through our flight school for the past 5 years. It took me a whole weekend to sift through the files and do it, but I was happy to comply. However, all of our students were local and none was a foreign national, so I don't think they learned anything from the pages of information I provided. Our shop and airplane insurance company contacted us and informed us that from now on, no acts of terrorism would be covered by our insurance. When we went to renew our insurance last spring, the rates had jumped way up. We had to pay the higher shop insurance, but they wanted $6300.00 a year to insure our single rental airplane for a value of $38,000. This was just too ridiculous, so we closed our flight and rental school last April, and our airplane is for sale. I've heard that about 3,000 small flight schools have closed across the U.S. for the same reason. Actually, we consider ourselves quite fortunate to have gotten by as good as we have in the past year. We're alive, and we still have our business. So many people lost so much that awful day, and afterwards. From now on, I think we all realize that we can't take anything for granted anymore; it's a dangerous world but we should all count our blessings and enjoy our lives while we can. We'll never forget the heros and stories of courage that day. It's all just a part of what makes this a great nation. The small family cafe where I was working that day has firefighter and medic memorbiela all over the place. Dailey... customers and employees are reminded of the importance of these people. We were all going about our day just like any other day until we noticed the commotion on the tv. Regular customers, family and friends all gathered around that tv in awe. We cried and shared our fears and concerns. The bakery man from across the street came over to watch in horror as the people from his country scattered and screamed "Kill the americans". I felt sorrow for this man I did not even know. He is dark skinned and from somewhere other than America and denied his people for what was happening. One regular customer came in and I remember her saying that one look at my face and she knew something terrible had happened. We will always remember each other because of closeness of our tears that day. I know I will never forget that dreadfull day. I wanted to be near my children and my parents right then. I did not want my children to ever experience that kind of fear. I was not at that cafe today, in fact I have moved 1600 miles away from there but I'll not forget those people ever and the sorrow we shared. We were listening to the radio and heard the shocking news. It made us both feel sick. All of our business meetings that day were focused on the days news. My daugher and her son and her life partner were calling and talking to us about it also. My daughter is 21 and she was like a child calling to her mom to see if things were going to be allright and I felt helpless as I could not reassure her that it would be. After the year has past and we now talk about it it is still in disbelief that something like that could happen to the United States. We have all come together as a family" to stand together and do what we have to to make this Country a safe one again. This is something that should be taught to all children in schools now. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember it was about 11 o'clock at night. I had just finished a final dress rehearsal of Jesus Christ Superstar which was due to open the following night. I got a call from my brother at the stage door of the theatre saying that someone had crashed into the WTC. I was like are you sure about that? And at that moment we were all turning on our mobile phones (as we cannot have them switched on during a performance) and all these sms's were coming on everyone's phone I couldn't believe it. I jumped into my car and made the 15 minute drive home listening to the radio. It must have been not long after the incident because all the radio stations were just receiving the news and no one knew what the hell was going on. A few minutes later the man on the radio said that another plane had just hit the other tower. I couldn't believe it. I walked through my front door and I from the look on my brothers face and my girlfriends I knew that world war three had just begun. Staying up all hours of the morning I am sure it was 5 am I decided to get ready for work. I didn't really feel like going to work. I don't think anyone really did that day. At work there was an eery silence around the shopping centre. No one was walking around or coming into the store and I didn't blame them. I walked down to the newsagent and asked about a paper. They had papers printed lying on the counter. Obviously the deadline for these pages was long before the attack. She told me that there would be another paper issued around about 11am so I decided to head back to work. A day that will live in infamy. I will never forget it and I don't think anyone could ever forget the images from that day. The general feeling with everyone I talked to was just utter disbelief. God bless all the people involved with the helping on that day I don't think anything can be done to show how much everyone appreciates what you guys did that day and are still doing today.
