My kids were in school and I was watching the TV when the first plane had already hit. I watched the second plane hit and called my mother-in-law. We watched in disaray !! I have been Military all my life and knew what this ment for my husband and our Family. The military post closed down no one could come or go. It was very strange to see the streets, ribbons went up flags went hafe mass. The kids came home. Life changed that moment, we would all be different. I watch familys looking for loved ones, as my phone rang with family asking what would come of my husband. What would happen now. We are at war, and every day I wake I tell my kids I Love them. And I pray for the families who can not do the same. We are strong and we are one and some how we will find a way to help one another understand. Take your child and hug him or her, tell your family you love them. And know my husband will fight with his life to defend your family and the life you live. And if he does not return to me, when this is over. I will know he did what he knew to be right. God Bless all who live this life that has changed. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It started off as a beautiful day. Many people went about without jackets. The temperature was somewhere in the eighties I think, pretty nice weather for the City. I wore one of my new outfits to school. It was the sixth day of school. It seemed like it was an unwritten rule that you wear something new the first couple days of school. Don?t ask me who came up with that. I wore a Billion Bay shirt. It was sky blue with the image of a tiger in its natural surroundings. I had on cargo khaki pants and a pair of moccasins. I thought I looked pretty decent. It was senior year for me at the Richard R. Green High School of Teaching. I along with everyone else was very excited. We had all finally made it. My family was proud as they should be. I?m the youngest child. I have one brother and one sister both of who are grown and out of the house. My co-workers at the New York City Mayor?s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) were also proud. They watched me grow from a curious fifteen year-old to a still curious seventeen year-old. The school looked different. I guess anything would look different after not seeing it for two months. Richard Green wasn?t a big school. It had about 650 students in a five story building. The school was named after Richard Green, New York City?s first African-American schools chancellor. He was in charge until 1989 when he suffered a massive asthma attack and died. We shared the building with PS 66, an elementary school serving mentally challenged students. We went by a first name basis at Green. The administration felt that going by last names would create an unnecessary gap. The school was located just two blocks away from Gracie Mansion, the Mayor?s official residence. I came into the building that morning and went to English class. My teacher was Marissa. She was cool and all but she needed to lay off the drugs, ha-ha, just kidding. She was a little hyper though. To be honest, I cannot recall what I did that period but in an hour and a half, nothing would matter. I had journalism second period. Second period started at 9 o?clock, twelve minutes after the first plane had struck one of the Towers. Journalism was a class none of the seniors had asked for. I would later come to appreciate it. Many of us were in the advanced placement (AP) program this year and the year before. For that reason, we weren?t able to take gym because our schedule was full. As a graduation requirement, a high school student needs seven gyms to graduate. To my knowledge, a lot of us didn?t have all our gyms. We asked Marci, the journalism teacher, what was up with our schedules. She basically told us that it was none of our business. Those were the kind of answers the seniors were getting. I became upset so I asked to go to the bathroom. In reality though, I was going to Elaine, the principal. She was such a charismatic person. She knew most of us by name. I stormed out of the classroom and made my way upstairs. On my way up there, I saw a girl crying in the stairwell. I didn?t think much of it because many girls in the school had their problems and I figured this was just another. I went to Elaine?s office and knocked on the door. Inside, she was seated with the Deans John and Don; the assistant principals Barbara and Isabel; and the guidance counselors? Seth, Laura, and Donna. She told me to get back to class. I was even more upset. Never had she turned me away. I went back to journalism feeling more defeated than before. We left journalism and headed to economics. The time was now 9:46 A.M. When I got to the room, Elaine met me by the door and told me that she was having a very important meeting and Don (who was also the economics teacher) would tell us what was going on. We stood in Economics discussing the latest gossip when Don rushed in and told us to sit down for he had a very important announcement to make. We sat down and he shuffled some papers on his desk. He then picked up a memo, possibly the only memo I will remember for the rest of my life: ?There has been an incident at the World Trade Center. If you have anyone in that area, please leave the room right now and go to the Crisis Center in room 307.? Many things rushed through my mind after hearing those words. My first reaction was to look at the beeper given to me by OEM. They sent out reports of various activities around the City. However, the last page I received from OEM was about a water main break in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan, nothing about the World Trade Center. I knew something was wrong so I literally dropped everything and ran out of the room on my way to the crisis center. My eyes began to tear up. When I got there, people were already seated in a circle. In charge was Barbara, the assistant principal for security and pupil-personnel services. For some reason, I had that gut-wrenching feeling that something was terribly wrong. She began to speak. ?From what we know, a small plane has struck the Twin Towers. Until we get more information, let?s talk about our experiences with our loved ones.? What the hell was she talking about?! Experiences? loved ones? What was she trying to say or do? People were getting angry and I was one of them. The main reason I guess was because no one knew what the heck was going on. Almost all communication was lost and that was truly scary. Many land lines were down; cell phones barely received signals, fax machines. It was the worst. Again, Barbara told us what was happening. She said something about the World Trade Center that wasn?t entirely correct. She said that from what people know so far, this was not an act of violence. In a matter of fact, no one knew what it was. But I knew it was terrorism right from the start. I knew it, I knew it, I knew it! For the thirty years those beautiful towers were up, a plane has never come close to hitting and now this! Ever since a small single engine plane struck the Empire State Building in the 1930?s, planes were restricted from flying over Manhattan Island. Being that I was at the Trade Center daily, I explained to the people seated in the room that the World Trade Center was much more than just the Twin Towers. It was comprised of seven buildings, three of which were tall enough to be hit by a plane: buildings One, Two, and Seven. Each building had its own reason for being a target. One and Two World Trade Center was obviously the tallest with the most people in them. It was the symbol of America?s financial strength. Seven World Trade Center housed many government agencies those of which I am not going to reveal. Also in 7 WTC were financial giants such as Morgan Stanley Dean Witter and Salomon Smith Barney. In addition, there was a mall in the concourse area that ran under buildings one through six. Underneath the mall, was a transportation hub that included several New York City subway lines and the PATH system which was a train that connected New York City and New Jersey. I pulled out my cell phone. Although they were not allowed in school, I didn?t care at this point and I wanted someone to tell me something about it. The first call I made was to my job. I figured that if anyone would know what was going on, it would be OEM. I called and called but no one answered. I would later find out that they would have to evacuate. I couldn?t control my anger anymore so I left the room. Laura, the guidance counselor, saw how upset I was so she asked ?who do you know down there?? I told her that I knew the kids at the day care center in Five World Trade Center and I worked in Seven World Trade Center. We went back to her office and tried to see if any form of communication worked. But nothing did. I then decided to call City Hall. That?s one of the few calls I managed to get out. Someone answered the phone and I asked if ?the Mayor?s Office of Emergency Management was evacuated?? All they could tell me was that they didn?t know. It was now time to switch classes. The time was roughly 10:33 A.M. The attacks, oh, sorry, ?accident? was the topic. My friends Rachel and Jenneal brought my book bag and stuff down from class. They comforted me and soon remembered something: our other friend Carlshea cut school and was supposed to be around 59th Street. Fifty-Ninth Street was the sight of another famous skyscraper, the Citigroup Building. At the time, we didn?t know what was going on so any and everything looked like a target. Rachel also figured out that her dad was in the area so she got real upset. I needed and wanted to know what was going on so I decided to go downstairs. On my way down, Wallace the security guard stopped me. He told me that I couldn?t go downstairs or outside. I looked back and said ?what do you mean we can?t go downstairs? People we love are possibly dying and I will not stay up here if I have to make a phone call. Typical Board of Education.? What the last part of that statement had to do with anything else, I don?t know but I was to the point where I didn?t care who I was talking to. I stomped down the steps and went in front of the school. I called my sister to ask if she had heard anything at all. She said that she didn?t. I called my mom who was in search of answers herself. When I called, she answered and asked if I had heard from anyone at the Mayor?s Office. I told her no. The main reason I called her though was to find out what was going on. But all she could say was that the towers were flat. I yelled at her and told her that was impossible. She told me to shut up. I was yelling at her as I stood in front of my school telling her how impossible that was. Just then, one of the poll workers (it was Election Day in the City) came to me and told me that it was true. The Towers were indeed gone. I went into the courtyard of my school where many kids were. Everyone was trying to get in touch with somebody. I found Rachel and Jenneal both of whom were trying to make phone calls. We stood there trying to decide how we were going to get home. All public transportation in the City had been suspended. All three of us lived out of Manhattan which is an island for those of you not familiar with New York City. The bridges and tunnels were closed. There was a rumor circulating that school kids would have to stay the night. I returned back to the Crisis Center. We weren?t being forced to go back to classes. I mean after all, this was no ordinary day. I got a page out to Jos? Garcia, one of the computer techs at OEM. He had told me that OEM was ?dead.? I also got another page out to David Longshore, a public information officer at OEM. Not understanding the magnitude of what was going on, I said ?David, where are we going to work?? His response was ?Jaffir, possibly tens of thousands of people could be dead. Where we work is the least of our troubles.? I got several pages out to Frank McCarton, the public information head at OEM. I kept asking him what?s going on and all he could tell me was to stay home. He didn?t realize that I was in school. As 2:30 P.M. came, an announcement was made that unless we have a way home or place to stay after school, we were to remain in school. This kid Richie who I only knew through a friend agreed to let me, Rachel, and this girl Dana stay by his house until we found a way home. We walked to his house that was on 113th Street. For the first time all day, I got a chance to see what was actually happening. From the intersection of 88th Street and First Avenue, you could see smoke rising. By this time, my nerves and emotions had already been shot. We called Rachel?s mom to see if she could pick us up, but how could she? The entire island was shut down. Nothing was allowed in or off. We thanked Richie and his family for their hospitality and we went back to school. When were got there, pizza was bought. I sat down and ate trying to figure out how to get home. The trains started working again but still I didn?t want to travel by myself. If the events of the day didn?t kill me, the other passengers on the train would certainly have. I decided to go to Rachel?s house. From there, her dad would take me home. Dana, Rachel, and myself hopped on the Queens bound ?E?. When I got off the island, I wanted to fall to the ground and ball. I never realized how much I valued that crowded train or that hot City bus. I got to Rachel?s house and her mom gave me dinner. By this time, the President began to address the nation. The time was 8:30 P.M. I am no big fan of ?W? but this night, it was different. On the way home, everything was closed. All streets that led to Manhattan were closed with police officers on guard. My mom greeted me at the door. I remember stepping into the house and not feeling any sort of emotion. I wasn?t happy or sad. I was just? here. My mom gave me all my phone messages from people wondering if I was in the area when it happened and if I was ok. I stayed home for about five minutes then headed to the roof of my building. From there, you have, well had, a perfect view of the Towers. All that remained now was a smoke cloud. Even after standing there not seeing the Towers, I was still emotionless. My mind couldn?t comprehend the destruction that had taken place earlier. I seemed okay on the outside, but inside, I was ripped to shreds. From as far back as I can remember, the Twin Towers had a special place in my heart. I would stay late after work everyday just to see them light up in the night sky. When it rained, the clouds passing over created this effect that I cannot describe. When I had a chance to go to the observation deck, the view was breath-taking. I was on top of the world in the best buildings in the universe. Nothing could ever top those Twin Towers that seemed gold in the morning sun. They were indeed Twins. When one fell, the other saw it as its ultimate mission to join its brother. They defined a Country, a City, and most importantly, a people who stand tall and proud of its heritage and achievements. Shortly after turning on CNN we watched in horror of not only the first tower burning but as the second tower was hit and we set in shock as to think who would do this. Tell us your story: I awoke about 9:20am on that unknowingly, and what would prove to be one of America's darkest, and most tragic mornings ever, September 11, 2001. I went into the den and turned on the tv. I became occupied and interested in the special news reports that were running on every major network. The reports were describing an unkown disaster, which had inflicted damage to one of N.Y's trade towers. It was stated that a massive fire had engulfed one of the towers, at that particular time, details of what initiated this fire was claimed to be "sketchy" at best. I had lost every perspective of time, as I watched on tv, the infamous events unfolded. I watched in unbelievable horror, as the continuing, and live coverage, captured the footage of an airliner-jet flying, and crashing into the other tower. I knew, at that very moment, America was under attack. Why, and who was responsible, was certainly, warranted questions. But in my mind, the questions would become burried by the powerful, and inhuman images of the great evilness, that took assault on the towers of The World Trade Center. I imediately thought about the great loss of life. Our freedom, and most importantly, the innocent victims, would be the sacrifice of such an enormous act of cowardness. As I watched Citizens, Rescue, Fire, and Police personel scramble to the tragic site, I became aware of the overwhelming senses of agony, outrage, and despair that coursed through each and every individual. My thoughts, more and more, reflected on the innocent victims, the feeling of commonly, and being a fellow American, was more certain than ever before. I too, felt the bearings of being a victim. Uncontrolable, I began to grieve and weep, my heart sank in great sorrow. Obviously, the families, friends, and all loved ones directly affected by the terror, would for always, have to endure all hardships of loss, on a much grander scale. America, I and my children's children will always respect in remembrance, September 11, 2001, and it's Heroes. May it's Liberty, our Freedom as a people, and the power to bring those responsible to Justice, never be tested again, in such a barbaric magnitude. As a nation, America will never be the same. We truely would, and will become "United", for as the name sake applies, and our Fore Fathers intended; with unsurpassed pride: The United States of America. I remember as if it was yesterday, I was getting out of my boyfriends car and a guy came running up to us shoutting, " The Twin Towers have been hit." At first we looked at him like he was crazy because we had never seen him. But as soon as we got in to our first period class my teacher was crying. We didn't understand why till she put on the news. Her husband had been in New York where everything was happing. Every class we went to the T.V. was on to the news. Then it hit me, i finally knew what that guy was talking about. When i got home my parents had the T.V. on the same thing. It scared me because I just thought to my self that could of been us in all that mess. As I awoke that incredible day, I turned on the TV before I got out of bed. I couldn't believe such a movie was on in the middle of the day, airplanes crashing into buildings, yound children might see this, I thought. Oh well, I'll change the channel, I don't want to wake up to such chaos that TV sometimes brings. I must have changed the channels a few times before I realized that I was watching continuing news coverage. But I was still unclear as to what exactly had happened. As the afternoon unraveled, I lay in bed, catching up to what had occured while I slept. The tragedy struck my heart in such way I didn't know I could feel such sorrow. Having lost a loved one I already understood that I must cherish every moment I spend with my friends and family. I had never realized though that I should cherish all the people of our country and all of the freedoms that we enjoy. Not many days have gone by in this past year that I have not thought about the events of 9/11. Today being that anniversary, I was listening to the radio and heard a dj say something about saying a prayer for those lost on that day. I did just that, I said a prayer, asking the Lord to keep all of those souls close, for they did not ask to be role models in the new war on terrorism, they just lived their lives on that day. I know this may not be a popular way of thinking, but I also asked the Lord to forgive those who died perpetrating this horrible act. I don't know the exact quote, but Jesus once said Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do. I don't condone any of these acts of terror, but I do believe in the "What Would Jesus Do" concept. I happened upon this site through an e-mail sent to me by another site. I had no forethought in what I have written, but I do hope my thoughts hold meaning for some readers. I arrived at the Port Authority Bus Terminal at 8:40pm after a faster-than-usual commute from home. The day was beautiful -- bright blue sky and sunshine. As I threaded my way through the crowds of my fellow commuters, the sound of police radios buzzed in my ears. I got off the escalator and started towards the 8th Street entrance/exit. Just then, seven or eight city police officers ran by me, heading towards the back of the terminal. I left quickly, thinking that there might be a shooting somewhere in the terminal. Certainly not unheard of. As I walked across and up into Times Square a man with a TV camera was staring up at the huge TV screen that dominates the area. Strange, what's he filming? Although it has taken me several years to acclimitize, I am now a true New Yorker in that I keep moving. However, as I passed the TV studio that looks out on the street there were several businessmen gathered around a small TV screen. I squeezed in and looked. I saw the World Trade Center with smoke pouring out. "What happened". Someone replied, "I guess a plane hit it." Sad but not too unexpected to my mind...probably a Cesna. I kept walking until it was time to head up 5th Avenue towards my office at 53rd Street. By now, the street was full of people staring down 5th Avenue. Some were standing up on mailboxes to get a better view. Others ducked into stores to buy cameras. Now I stopped and looked. Thick, black smoke poured up into the sky. Flames could be seen at the top of the building. The woman next to me said "another plane hit, I saw the explosion." As I looked I started to experience vertigo and nausea...my mind flashed on the people who must be up there. Just keep walking. I stopped by a police office. "We're under attack." "Come on, that's crazy...it's an accident." She glared at me "No, it's an attack. Those planes were flown into that building." As I walked into my workplace lobby, the building guys invited me down to the basement to watch the news. We were crowded around a tiny black and white TV with terrible reception. God, could this be happening just downtown? Just then, my officemate ran down. "Your husband is trying to get hold of you. You need to call him". I ran upstairs but the lines were down. I called my mother in Rhode Island. Strangely, I got through. "Where are you!? Are you in the city!? What's going on!" "I'm fine, Mom.. don't worry." "But, the Pentagon's just been hit. Don't stay in the city". The day unraveled from there. Some of my colleagues left the building, determined to walk to the top of the city and get off the island. One colleague was desperately trying to find her sister. She had left Boston and was either on the flight that had hit the WTC or she was safe. Another colleague was trying to find her husband. Was he downtown? Rumors were darting around. Two more planes are missing. They're headed for New York. We're not safe. I sat on a box of office supplies and listened to the radio. The announcers voice suddenly rose in anguish "my god, one of the buildings has just collapsed." I hugged my knees and sat tight. I didn't want to leave the building. Finally my colleague asked me to go home with her. She was scared, her husband was a doctor, he definitely wouldn't be coming home tonight. We walked 40 blocks uptown to her apartment. The strangest sights: no cars on the street. Then, one car screaming downtown with the windows smashed out and covered in ash. Lines around the block of office workers waiting to give blood a hugely pregnant woman squeezed against a building trying to stay out of the surging crowd and rest Masses of people evacuating across the bridge towards Queens Planes screaming across the sky. We flinched everytime. I stayed until 6:00pm watching the news but all I wanted was to be home with my husband. I left and took a city bus that was running. I sat next to an old Asian woman. She talked to me about her homeland, her apartment downtown, her senile mother...her life had been hard. I felt so unworldly. Nothing had ever touched my world like this, made me feel unsafe. I made it down to the PATCO where herds of people were waiting for trains to Hoboken. On the train, a man talked about watching people jump from the windows of the WTC. He was laughing and talking so loud and fast. The woman with him worried that people would misunderstand. "You weren't laughing before. You threw up, remember?" People can have the strangest reactions. When I stepped off the train at Hoboken they were separting people into downtown and midtown/uptown. If you were downtown, they took you out and hosed you down. People squelched onto trains, sitting shivering in their seats and waiting. The trains weren't on any schedule. They filled up and then they left. I was so lucky. I made it home to my husband. Not everyone did. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a Public Defender. On September 11, I was, and did, start my first murder trial. I left my office, a short walk from the courthouse, just after 9AM. As usual, I had my radio on the local news station, WBZ. As I was leaving, an announcer said there was an unusual sight in NYC - a plane had hit one of the Towers, and it was smoking. They kind of made light of it - it appeared to have been a small plane. I went to court, and we began to get the case going. During a break, I left the courtroom, and saw ashen faces and persons huddled around a few radios. They said both Towers were hit, that Boston flights were missing, that a bomb had gone off outside the State Dept, and there was smoke from the Pentagon and, I believe, the Capital. And a Tower was gone. I told the secretary who told me this that that was impossible - a skyscraper doesn't fall because of a plane. The radio confirmed all of this (much of it later not true). The DA heard the same radio, and told me he was worried b/c a friend of his was flying that day out of Logan. I also got word that an attorney in my office had just been told her dad was on a flight out of Logan to California. Thankfully, both were OK (I remember Susan getting the call from her dad in Buffalo, where his flight was forced down.) But another attorney in our office, from Marblehead, would learn soon that she lost several friends. The Judge came into the room with the radio to get some papers, and heard for the first time the news. Here was 2 lawyers trying a major case, and a judge trying to do his job - we had to get back to work. So we did. At the next break, the news was stark - there was no WJC anymore. At that point, we heard that other courthouses were shutting down, but we were still up. I marveled that anyone would think some county court would be a target, but public buildings were closing everywhere. Bill the DA and I did our openings with all this news in the back of our minds. Thankfully, the Judge realized going on was pointless. I explained to my client, who would lose the rest of his life later that week, what had happened. He had converted to Islam in jail, but it was I, not him, who wondered if that would hurt him - he couldn't even take in what had happened. Since his conversion was not evident, we decided it should not matter. The Judge stopped the trial for the day, telling the Jury, who had not idea, that a horrific tragedy had struck us, that the judge and attorneys would be unable to continue, and to prepare themselves. And so I finally went home to see the extent of what had occurred, and to cry. But the case continued the next day, and through the next week. As a reult, I got my news at night, while trying to concentrate on the case. My main reminder was looking out my window, which was in Logan's flight path, and never seeing a plane except high-flying fighters and larger jets. I had never seen the sky like that. (And I remember seeing my first commercial jet when they opened the airports again.) When it was over, I went about my business. But my colleagues and friends noticed that I was very short-tempered. I knew that in fact the tears I had held through the trial were screaming to get out. With every story of a missing fireman, policeman, or citizen, I would choke up. Finally, someone explained to me that I had never had that chance to mource during the tragedy, and it was coming out now. Funny thing is, even today, March 1, 2002, when I see some family member still looking for something to bring home, I tear up. I believe in the end we all do have not just a national consciousness that allows us to cry for our nation, but a human consciousness that goes beyond borders. I hope that we are able to cry the same tears for the innocent Afghans, and other nations, that have and will also suffer because of this inability by some to feel for others. Some teacher walked by about 7:55 (8:55 NY time)and said that something's or someone's attacking New York City. Then I went to my 2nd hour history class. We turned on the T.V. and sure enough they had the Trade Towers on it. My entire class went silent. We couldn't believe what we were seeing. Some of us started to cry because they had either been there recently, in the towers or just to New York City. But the worst part had to have been when we were all watching in other hours, and then seeing the second plane hit. Again, we all went silent for we had not idea and then when the news mentioned that it was probably the works of terroists, someone said Bin Lauden. Sure enough he was right. When then the towers began to colapse, we were agian like "Oh My God!". We just couldn't stop looking at the news. To me, it didnt seem like it was real, that America couldnt be under attack because we had the best military there is. It's like we were watching some movie that seemed very true, but it was only fictional.Then the death numbers started coming in and that really scared us. At first with the estimates of 5,000 dead? That was rediculus but then the realistic of the 3,000 was horrible. One is too many, let alone 3,000 lost. It was inhumaine and unrealistic to us all. Then coming home was worse becasue it was all that was on. Things were unreal to us, and the replays didnt seem to make it any more real to us. Just seeing when the two towers fell, and the second plane hitting is something that will remembered until I die. But then seeing the actual site brougt the realism to us all. We were shocked, stunned and in mourning for all those who had been there, those who parished, and those who lost thier loved ones on that fateful day. Tell us your story: I had woken up that Tuesday morning at 7:30 to the radio like I usually do, so I can get ready & to get my son ready for school. It was the second week of school, so we were just starting to get settled in to a new schedule. At least that was the plan to get ready, as I was waking up to the radio all I can remember was hearing that a plane had gone into the World Trade Center. My feeling at that moment was disbelief. I had to wake up & sit there to make sure what I was hearing. Then I turned on the Today Show & right there on the screen the World Trade Center was hurt & hurt bad. Then to hear that we were being attack it was really beyond my comprehension. In my 30 years of life I have not had to emotionally deal with someone or something attacking our freedom. As I was watching all of this unfold in front of me my children had woken up. What do I tell my boy?s (6&3 at the time) how do we explain to them what has just happened? That was a big question in my mind to make them understand that we were safe, even though my feelings of being safe had been compromised. We tried to get ready for the day, listening to local reports that school was going on as scheduled. I knew my son had to go to school, he needed the same routine, and he need to know that everything is ok & school is where he needs to be. I got home from taking my son to school to find out that all aircraft have been diverted & grounded tell further notice. This had affected us in a big way because my husband works for an airline in which he had only been working there for 3 months. I tried really hard not to be angry. We had already gone through hard times & we had just moved to Vegas to get a new start. I had to ask myself why is this happening? What gave them the right? Now that it has been a year after the attacks I have pondered those questions watching story after story of the many people who have lost their lives & listening to all the lives that have changed forever. I have come to realize that things happen for a reason, even though we might not understand what the reason is. My Family & I have changed, we do miss the freedom we had before 9/11. It makes us more grateful for the freedom we do have & blessed for each day of that freedom. My husband called me at work around 9:00 a.m. and told me that a plane had hit the first tower. I just thought it was a horrific accident and felt saddened that lives were probably lost. My husband is self-employed, so after he called me, he left home to go to a job. I don't think an hour passed and he phoned me from his cell phone and told me that a plane had hit the Pentagon. I'll never forget his words, "We're under attack!" I remember freezing and feeling numb. I didn't really know what to do and being so far away, felt very helpless. Our children are older and when they came home from school, they had already heard about it so we discussed it as a family. My husband is a Marine Reservist who served in the Persian Gulf and things have been very stressful over the past year. They were told the weekend after September 11th, 2001, "It's not if, but when" in regards to activation. I spent most of today (9/11/2002), watching the t.v. and trying to remember and soak up as much information as I could. We went to church tonight as a family and remembered those who died so tragically. We are preparing as a family for my husband to go and defend this great nation. It saddens me today that people are so against America going, but I am proud and thankful that my husband and so many others are willing to give their lives so that we may continue to live free. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was driving to school when the morning radio host mentioned that something horrible had happened, but they didn't know what. Then news of the attack came through. I knew my cousin, Melody, lived and worked in D.C., so I called my aunt to see if she had heard from her. That is the moment I found out that Melody actually worked in the Pentagon. We didn't know the details, but Melody had been able to get a call through saying she was out of the building and unhurt. Over the next couple of days, as Melody was able to talk about it, we found out that a miracle had happened. Melody and her coworkers had not heard of the attack on the WTC until my aunt called her and told her. A few minutes after that call, the plane hit the Pentagon. Melody told us that if she had not heard of the attack, she and her office mate would probably had crawled under their desks, but instead they immediately rushed out of the building with the other survivors, narrowly missing the fireball that passed through moments later. You see, Melody's office was on the first floor, immediately to the left of the large gaping hole left by the plane. My father, a licensed counselor at Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, AL, waited several hours to get on the base on Sept. 11. My brother and I pleaded with him to just go back home, because no one knew when or where the next attack might be. Instead, he went to work so he could do his job - helping people get through the day. To me, both my father and my cousin are heroes. They did not let the attack get in the way of doing their job - helping people, and helping the Department of Defense. My son, three years old at the time, watched the news with my parents and me that night. He kept saying, "I want to see the movie with the planes hitting the building again!" I know most of the world wanted to believe it was just a movie. Maybe a more recent version of War of the Worlds. Unfortunately, it will be placed in our children's text books as another horrifying event, along with Pearl Harbor and WW II. My hope is that my son, and the other everyday survivors, will remember and learn from the attacks. If we are to be survivors, we must make the best of every day. I asked my daughter for her reaction.
