Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I witnessed history on September 11th. I was at Marlborough Middle School. My whole team had a bus evacuation presentation that morning. We were not supposed to know what had happened, but when we got on the bus that morning, the bus driver told us the World Trade Center had been hit with planes. At first I didn't know how serious the situation was. When my teacher started crying in the beginning of class, she said she could not imagine what people were going through. I still did not quite understand. But when we were watching television in homeroom, I realized this was one of the biggest things that has ever happened to America. Watching it made me feel chills. It was horrible. That night my family watched T.V. together. We all could feel the hurt that our fellow Americans were going through. My life has been changed by September 11th. I have realized that nothing should be taken for granted, you have to appreciate the special people in your life because you never know when you could loose them. I have also learned that you have to be strong during difficult times. Being afraid and not helping our country is not going to solve any problems. We must all be united as Americans. I think September 11th has changed everyone's life in some way. September 11th has many things that should be remembered. The innocent people who's lives were taken should definitely be remembered. Though we cannot mourn forever, their deaths are the reasons why we are fighting. We also need to remember the fire fighters, policemen, medical technicians, and volunteers who sacrificed their lives for our people. Last, but not least, we must remember the people who are fighting for us in Afghanistan for our country. September 11th will always be remembered. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was working at a homeless shelter in Racine, WI at the time the tragical events. My shift started at 7:00 a.m. that morning of 9/11/01. Working at a homeless shelter was tough as it was but it does have its upside to it. Some of the people that were in our care at the time, were already bummed out. We, as a provider, tried to help these people in need. Of course everyone has their own differences, so thats what makes it hard. I was sitting in the office and listening to the radio. The executive director of the shelter had just came in at about 7:30 a.m. that morning. We were conversating, then the phone rang. It was my fiance. He told me to turn on the T.V. I told him that I couldn't at the present momment and asked why. He said there is something on T.V. that shows the World Trade Center. He stated in was on fire. He stated he thought someone intentially hit the building. At this point of time, no one really knew what was going on. I, on the other hand, kept telling him to quit playing around. I told him that it wasn't funny. He kept trying to convince me that something really did happen. He is still talking to me on the phone and was watching the news at our house, as I was sitting in my office at work. He stated, turn it on now, I think this is a terrorist attack. I said not in the United States, that is impossible. Little did I know. I guess that is where I take my Freedom for granted. At this point, he is now telling me he just saw a second airplane hit into the other World Trade Center Tower (he was still watching the news broadcast). I started to get teary eyed. I told him, I'll call you back. That is when I finally turned on the T.V. in the living room of the shelter. I gathered everyone up and said something is going on in New York, we got to watch the news. All of the staff at the shelter, and all the people that lived there at the time, all gathered together by the television. We watched the horrific news bullentin about the attacks on the World Trade Center. I looked around the room and most of us had tears in our eyes. I could not believe what I was watching! I couldn't believe that I did not believe my fiance about what he told me on the phone. I thought "What is happening to our beautiful country. Why was this hatred from terrorists aiming on our land? What did we do?" As we all watched the horror of the WTC Towers and of all the innocent lives that was contained in the buildings, we also watched those who choose to be Heros in our country. By this time, I am crying. And as if you feel it couldn't have gotten any worse, then there was the airplane that hit the Pentagon. What devistation. How can someone do this? How can you take responsibility of all those innocent lives into one's hands? Why our country? Then, you feel your heart drop. There it goes, it's sinking. The WTC Towers fell straight down. They collapsed! We watched as we saw those Towers just crumble in total mass distruction. ALL THOSE LIVES!!! As you try to keep yourself together, which of course was hard, then a fourth airplane hits the ground in Sauksville, PA. At my job, we are all still gathered together by the T.V. Watching the horrors on T.V., I turned and looked around the room. I thought to myself, look at how we all just came together as one. We were all united together. On the T.V. everyone was united together as one. As if we were all just one person. It was a time of need for everyone. I prayed, we all prayed that day, when we found out how many people lost their lives. To this day I still pray. I pray for all those who lost their lives, their loved ones, the Heros, the lost Heros, the innocent lives that were on the hijacked planes, and I pray for all others. I thank God that he saved some lives, and tried to save the others. I thanked God that I was able to be with my family in Wisconsin that day. I have never traveled by plane before, but I was still happy to be alive. God bless to all those who grieve. God bless to all those who have lost loved ones. May God always be with you and your families. I know it is still hard to this day, though I cannot imagine the grief. I still get very emotional about 9/11/01. It was a day just like any other day, I was at school. I distinctly remember being in German class taking notes from the over-head. The lights were off except for that one darn security light that I had the pleasure of sitting under. It wasn?t to far into class that one of the German AP students ran in from across the hallway where he had been studying. Bursting into the room he yelled ? HERR PHELPS!! We?re BEING ATTACKED!? Automatically we assumed that he meant the room he was in was being taken over by another foreign language class. Boy were we wrong. We were all in a confused daze when he told us to turn on to CNN. I knew something had happened, but what? We all sat there in disbelief as we saw the second plane crash into the tower. A blanket of silence fell over the entire class. Immediately I began thinking of all my family, my dad wasn?t on a flight, my mom defiantly wasn?t, uncles aunts? To many to keep track of, I was somewhat worried when I didn?t know for sure if my family had been on a plane. As we sat paralyzed by the view everyone was scared. Could we get hit next? Or maybe our airport?!?! Me and my friends quickly thought of any important buildings near us, we were safe. Finally first hour was over, as I walked to second block the hallways weren?t filled with the ordinary chat of the latest gossip. No, it was mostly confused talk, not all students got to watch what had happened, all my friends were coming up to me to find out what in the world was going on. No one could understand why. I made my way to second block, as I passed the pay phones I thought about calling my mom, or someone outside of this place to see if everyone was ok. But I assured myself everyone was fine. Second hour was unbearable, behind me was the muted TV showing the repeated images of the planes crashing and the towers falling. I wanted to cry but knew I couldn?t. The images were so powerful it had changed my entire view on my friends, family, and my faith. Before the television was turned on in first block I never knew how important my friends and my family were, and most importantly my faith. Walking down the hall to lunch I saw people crying. I prayed for the safety of their families. Suddenly something hit me, we could go to war! Why I didn?t think that before surprised me. My brother was 18! Could we be in that bad of need of soldiers? Lord I hoped we weren?t. The day drew on, one of the longest days of my life. Wanting so badly to get home. The next morning, September 12, I don?t really remember what had happened in school, but I can remember walking to the bus stop. Normally the skies were blue, and there weren?t many clouds. But on this day the sky was a desolate gray. I won?t ever forget the lonely feeling I had, no birds were in the sky. Normally feeling relaxed as I took each stride peacefully, I felt like I had weights on my feet, cracking the gravel with every step. This morning and several mornings after there was a feeling of distress, all around, there was no escaping. Living not very far from the airport was even freakier. Not hearing the normal roar of planes above felt weird. And when I did hear one after a week or so it was something alien to me, it worried me that there were going to be more attacks. A year has passed and I had tried to get myself to forget. It seemed like every time my mind was free of it, I would come across an American flag and be brought back to that day in my German classroom where I sat paralyzed in disbelief. Years will pass and no one will ever forget this tragic day. Although there are many like me that wish we could just move on and not celebrate this dark day will still remember. All the years in my life I have never seen so many flags and so much patriotism about. Is it all just an act? Are people doing this because they feel bad for what had happened? I don?t think so, I believe after the 9-11 attacks our country has been brought closer together. We have formed a bond with everyone in this country, a bond so strong it will never be broken. But the people ran about, screaming "Oh woe is me, oh woe is me." Then the President swore that we'd have our revenge. Rather than campaign against terror we'd create it instead. So the people ran about, screaming "Islam will be dead, the Middle East will be dead." The Americans walked around, self-pitying and fierce-- Believing our hearts were the only ever to be pierced. And the government declared "We'll make terrorism disappear." Orphaned Afghani children cowered in corners afraid, As the numbers increased of those who had been slain. And the dying laid down, whispering "Oh the pain, end this pain." Meanwhile, Congress convened and created dozens of laws. America didn't dissent since the emotions were still raw. They went about saying "Our country's without flaw." It was our choice to allow bombs and anger to explode, to allow babies to die on the other side of the globe. And the President proclaimed "We'll bear this heavy load!" Freedom's fading fast as innocent children scream. We've never woken up from our American dream. Lady Liberty's shaking her head, sighing "Oh woe is me, oh we is me." Tell us your story: It?s funny, I thought back to Sept. 11th a lot, and I am unable to recall anything about what the day was like before I arrived at the World Trade Center. It was my brother?s birthday, so I?m sure I reminded myself to call him, but other than that I?m guessing it was my typical daily routine: Roll out of bed, take a shower get dressed, and fight my way onto the e-train. It?s weird to think of that time. I had no idea what I was moving towards. I thought it would just be another day of working. The same routine I had been doing for many months. That was the last time I ever did that routine. I was just getting off the train at the World Trade Center when the first plane hit. I don?t remember any kind of jolt or shaking or anything to show that something was horrendously wrong. As I was about to enter the mall below the WTC when a large crowd of people started running out. In all of the confusion I heard that a plane had flown into the building but I didn?t believe them. I didn?t think that something like that was possible. There was probably just an explosion or something. I was still under the impression that I could get to work at the World Financial Center so I, like everybody else, made for the stairs. I?m very claustrophobic and coming out of the subway is usually a huge relief to me, but not that day. I remember coming up those stairs very vividly. There was a railing on the right side that made it impossible to see the World Trade Center. In front of me though I saw all kinds of people standing there, looking at the building in disbelief and shock. When I finally got to the surface what I saw was like a punch to the gut. Obviously I was worried about the building being on fire and the people inside. There was something else though. I walked by that building everyday to get to work. Sometimes I would even pull out of the traffic pattern of people and go over to the base of the building, touch it and look up. It was something you would expect from a tourist and not from someone who worked across the street. As I was standing there I always felt the same rush of emotions. I felt proud that I was living in New York City and pursuing my dream. I felt awe that all around the area people were looking at that huge building and they had no idea that somewhere at the bottom was little old me. Most importantly, I felt safe. The World Trade Center always felt like a protector, or a big brother watching over us. So as I stood there watching it burn, I was overwhelmed by how small it looked. Seeing it humbled like that was devastating. This is where it gets really hard. I looked away for a brief instance and heard someone scream. I looked back at the building and saw a person falling. If I had been breathing before that I must have stopped at that point. I thank god that I am not completely able to describe in words what I was feeling and thinking at that moment because I don?t want anybody to have to experience that. I experienced it 6 times that day in a matter of minutes and I?ve experienced it almost every day since. The thought of how bad it must have been up there to make leaping out of the building their only option was staggering. I wanted to be able to help them, but all I could do was watch them die. The last two people that I saw jumped together and that snapped something in me. It was now inevitable that I was going to collapse. I was able to sit down. I wasn?t down for a second when I heard what sounded to me like a missile. I looked up at the other tower just as it exploded over my head. I could swear that I felt the heat from it, but I don?t know if that?s possible. The crowd instantly fell on top of me in an effort to get away. Miraculously I wasn?t hurt or trampled in any way. By the time I was able to stand up again what lay before me was surreal. I felt as if while I was buried under that pile the world had ended and I was the last man alive. There had to be people around, firemen, policemen, etc, but I couldn?t see them. There were papers flying everywhere. People?s belongings, and a lot of women?s shoes were discarded in an attempt to get away. There were fires all over the place. I stood there for probably a second but it felt like a lifetime. I finally came to the realization that I needed to get to safety. I turned the corner and ran into a woman. She was crying, her glasses were all scratched up and there was blood on her face. She was hysterical and was refusing to move. She kept saying that she needed to call her husband. I needed to get her out of there so I told her that I wasn?t getting any reception on my cell phone and that if we walked a bit maybe we would get lucky. I was able to get her up the block a little ways before an emergency worker came and took her away to be treated. I just kept walking. I turned the next corner and was finally out of sight, for the first time, of the World Trade Center. I was crying and once again was going to collapse. So I found a spot in a doorway and sat down. I had been hyperventilating and as I sat down my legs went numb. I knew that I was dangerously close to passing out. A man approached me and asked if I needed assistance. To prove to him that I didn?t I willed myself up. I managed to make it another couple of blocks before I had to sit down again. At that point I realized that people knew where I worked and would be worried. My cell phone wasn?t getting reception and there were lines at every pay phone. It kept running through my head that I needed to call my roommate, and my girlfriend to let them know that I was alive, and that I needed to call my temp agency and let them know that I wasn?t going to make it to work. I think the last was a given, but for some reason it was a priority. I continued to wander north and was able to get a few seconds of reception in which I called my family to let them know I was alive. After that I just walked north. I was in a daze the whole time. Everywhere I looked people were gathered around television sets watching the coverage or listening to it on radios. I wanted to ask someone for help but I couldn?t make words come out. I wanted someone to hold me up so that I wouldn?t fall and tell me that it was all right, but I couldn?t say anything. Part of me felt like I had escaped from something and that by asking for help I would have to go back. I had wandered far enough norths so that when the towers collapsed I wasn?t harmed. I saw the cloud coming up the street but it never reached me. I ended up walking to 59th street. I saw a sign for the blood bank asking for donations so I went in. There were people all over the place trying to give blood and talking about where they were when they heard about what happened. I grabbed my form and left the room because I knew that if any of them had asked me I would have to tell them that I was there, and every emotion that I was able to suppress at that point would have come raging out. I sat outside the blood bank for a while. I was able to eat, and calm myself down a bit. I was also able to get through to my family on the pay phones in the building. I sat there for a while before I found out that I couldn?t give blood because it hadn?t been long enough since my last donation. I even asked them to make an exception but they said it wasn?t possible. So I gathered up my stuff and walked over the bridge into Queens. I would like to say that I lived happily ever after and that was the end of the story, but it?s not. I still get scared when a plane flies by a little too low. I still see those people jumping whenever I look up at the skyline. Just the sight of the World Trade Center in pictures and news coverage makes me shutter and takes my breath away. I?ve told my story to a lot of people, but I?ve never really sat down and talked about it. I guess part of me is still afraid that if I were to talk to a professional they would find out my secret, that I escaped, and by bringing up all of those emotions they would make me go back. I had to have surgery, I seen this on the news and I was horrified! I had to sit in the waiting room for at least 1 or 2 hours. It was really hard to sit and listen or to even watch it. Tell us your story: I was working in a doctor's office and a patient came in and said that a plane had hit one of the twin towers.I thought that maybe a small plane had accidently hit it, but then another patient said that the second tower had been hit and I learned that these were not small planes, but large ones.TV reception in the office wasn't good, but we managed to get a fuzzy picture. I saw the chaos, the burning towers, replays of the second plane slamming into the second tower. All of us in the office went quiet. We were dumbfounded.Then we heard about the Pentagon being struck and that a plane had crashed in Pennsylvania. The business manager came into the office, crying, saying she could not reach a relative who worked in D.C. The doctor I worked for tried to contact his brother who worked at the Pentagon, but he too could not reach anyone. Everyone was distraut,unable to believe what was happening. It seemed like the whole world had been turned upside down in just a matter of minutes. We were numb.I tried to do my work, but finally had to give in. I went outside and sat on the stoop and cried. I kept thinking of all of those people in the towers. I wanted to go up to New York and help. I have no technical skills, but I can lift, move debris, do something. I kept telling my self that maybe in the lower levels, maybe some people were still alive. As I drove home from work, the streets were empty along Route 40. The stores had closed early. Everything was eerily quiet. Dover AFB is not far away and they were on high alert. Large military planes roared overhead and still do. Even now, a year later, I am still drawn to the tragedy, it's like I can't let go. I see things for sale like photos or paintings of the towers and I want them for rememberance sake. If a TV program comes on and the opening scene is of New York, I look for the Twin Towers. I can't watch the collapse footage anymore because each time, those people die again, feel the terror again and I can't watch it. Today is the one-year anniversary of the attack. Outside my house the American flag is flying and I am buring a candle for the lost. I wasn't sure that I would be able to burn the candle as a storm was making its way up the eastern coast bringing with it strong winds which had been blowing hard all day long, but about one-hour before sunset, the wind died down and I lit the candle. Strange how it just stopped blowing like that. I don't think I'll ever forget that day... or that I want to. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was in class when the Twin Towers fell, it was a phone from a friend that infromed me of what happened. I am thankful they called because I do not watch television during the day as to not distract me from my work. I remember trying to call home (Bronx, NY) to find about if my father who worked next door to the towers was ok, but the phone lines were all dead and that was scary in it's self. Geneva NY is where my college is located, you could not see the effects of the day unless you turned on the television but the quietness of the town for that day was nerve recking. Finding out my father was home when it happened was a blessing beyond words. I know everyone is remembering the people from the towers and I think that is fine, but the people I think of on this day are the hundreds of people who went on the airplanes thinking they were going to return home, thinking it was ok to relax because the airport had checked everyone boarding. I do not know how that must feel to know that your life was gone and all the hopes of tomorrow would never come, there was no chance of surviving through the flight. those are the people that I cry for because they are often forgotten by the deaths of those in the towers. I also remember that the women and childern of the middle east who are not funding terror but praying that they will not be killed by their government for expressing thoughts of freedom or by the West for simply put being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I pray that this day does not fade into history books and lose it's meaning like that of the bombing of Japan. I would call my sister at work at around 8:30 in the morning, before her bosses come in, so we can catch up on some sisterly things. She worked at 2 World Trade Center, on the 100th floor. She worked for AON Corp. As we were speaking, I heard a loud crash, it was glass breaking. I asked her, "WHAT WAS THAT?" She replied, "A BOMB JUST WENT OFF IN THE WORLD TRADE!" I right away changed the channel on the T.V. and put the news on. It said that a plane just hit the 1 World Trade Center. I told my sister what it was and then we got disconnected. When we reconnected, she informed me that they were evacuating. I heard the screams in the back ground and the fear in her voice. A sound that I will never forget. I told her to get out, run as fast as you can, I LOVE YOU! Then we got cut off. Who would have known that that would be the last time that I would speak to her. My sisters name is Denise L. The teachersdid not whar to tell the students because there werem 4th grades in the school, and the teacher thought they were to little too know. Then I went home and someone on my street said the Twins Towers were hit by a plane. I was very shocked. I didn't know what to do. I went straight home and turned on the news. I could not believe what I saw. I wondered what had gone wrong. How did this happen? I was worried because I had a lot of family in New York. I was afraid someone in my family was there. I found out that everyone in my family was ok. I had to talk to a friend who was having a lot of problems in his life. His favorite aunt was in one of the Towers, and she was dead. I felt so bad because his father did not see him. The next day I went to school. They teacher talked a little about it, but not a lot. I went up to my sixth grade teacher classroom who was Mr. Santos. He was talking about it to me. He was telling me how it changed our lives. He had shown me a T-shirt that someone had given him, and I thinkit said "God Bless America". He was honored to have this shirt. September 11th changed my life. September 11 has helpled me become closer to my family. It helped me understand how good we have it living in the United States, we have freedom. It had changed my life so much. I respect people more. I have been kinder to people. On Spetember 25th, my favorite teacher passed away. His name was Mr. Santos. He was my sixth grade teacher. I wanted to die from all the pain of September 11th and now one of my old teachers had died. It was such a shock. How could have happened? I keep thinking these thoughts and question to my self. Almost 6,000 people are dead because of September 11. Then teacher you respect that taught you how much fun Social Studies could be also dies. The day before he died, I saw him and he was fine. So I was so sad about everything that happened that month. Planes were hitting people, and so meany people diying. i thought to my self, "This is bad." Mr. Santos is the one helping me through this, and then he died. I was so sad that all this happened. I think it helped me understand all at this. I think that all the people who died on September 11 should be remebered. All the people who gave thier life to help us should be remeber. People who went into to the building to find people and died should be remembered. Those who died serving their country should be rembered. We should rembered that this did not destroy America, but brought us all closer in many ways. I think that everyone who helped in any ways at Ground Zero or the Pentago should be remebered. No matter how many times you visited the World Trade Center or how long you worked there, you never got over the beauty of the place. The towers were bold strokes against the sky, signifying to the world that we were the biggest and the best. The view from inside was even grander. In 1997 I began working for the Port Authority Law Department. My office faced the East River from the 62nd Floor of tower one. I will always remember the view I had each morning when I looked out the three eighteen inch windows I was allowed. On a sunny morning I could see the East River bridges reaching across to pull the boroughs closer to Manhattan - pulling their inhabitants, their money, their dreams into the bosom of the city. All of them crossing a river of gold. On days when the storms would roll across the Hudson I would be lost in the clouds where, as anyone could tell you, it snows up instead of down. It was a beautiful day. I was newly married and that morning I kissed my wife goodbye and told her that I loved her. She said, "be careful.", but I was already down the stairs and gone. At 8:46 a.m. I was standing in my cubicle and contemplating whether I should go for a cigarette when the floor started to sway beneath me. I heard no sound - no crash, no explosion, no screams, but I felt that fortress of steel and glass wobble back and forth like it was a cheap card table, nearly knocking me off my feet. It felt for a moment as if the entire building would go toppling over onto Church Street. I turned to see black chunks falling outside my window and a cacade of papers floating in the air. What a surreal sight, I thought. My friend yelled, "Lets get the fuck out of here!", and I wasn't about to argue. There were eight of us in the office that morning and we filed out into the hallway where someone was screaming "Hit the deck!" I got down on my knees for a second and then I realized the absurdity of that position - being several hundered feet in the air and without much cover. One of our secretaries, a survivor of the 1993 bombing said, "I'm not going down 62 flights in my heels again." My boss and I went back into the office with her to get her sneakers while the rest of our colleagues began the long descent down the stairwell. My boss made one last check of the office while we were there and found his secretary under her desk. We pulled her out and left our office for the last time. As we entered the stairwell we were greeted by a throng of people from the upper floors who were calmly making their way out. We slipped into the line and heard almost immediately that a plane had hit the building. It was generally agreed that it must be a small Cessna that got lost or lost control and struck one of the upper floors. I don't know if this was a logical conclusion or a reassuring one, but I know it calmed me down. I thought, "This will be a nice extended vacation while they repair the building." I didn't think twice about the people who might have died in the crash and I certainly didn't think about what those black chunks outside my window might have been. Once I was in the stairwell I smelled that awful smell - burning jet fuel and God knows what else. It was that same horrible smell that lingered over Manhattan in the weeks and months to come. We progressed slowly down the stairwells, stopping every couple of minutes or so and then on again. Gradually we lost sight of the other people from our office. My boss said, "stick close to me, I may need your help." "I live to serve", was my standard reply. I thought I was going to get home early, but c'est la vie. About 9:15 a.m. or so, we started to get updates on our pagers that confirmed that we had been struck by an airplane and that tower two had been struck as well. I didn't process what this meant until much later. I figured maybe some debris from tower one had struck tower two - that was all. Shortly after that we stopped altogether to let some firemen up. They were packed with what seemed like an obscene amount of equipment - their faces grimy and uncertain. They kept looking up inbetween the railings, I guess to see when the line of people would end, but the lines didn't end. Those guys were so tired, but they wouldn't stop until they found somebody who needed their help. I don't know what end they came to, but I will never forget those grimy New York faces passing me on the way up as I was going down. Now the hard part. We had to stop more often. My wife kept paging me, but there was no way I could call her back to tell her I was OK and that's all I wanted to do at that moment. Of course, I had no idea what she was seeing on TV - what the world was seeing on TV. At this point people were jumping out of the buildings in groups and crushing themselves on the ground they so desperately wanted to reach. I had no idea. We were blocked off from the world. The last few floors were flooded form a sprinkler system that had gone off so I pulled my pant legs up and trudged down the last few stairs. I remeber people were laughing they were so happy to be out and breathe fresh air again. I finally reahced the bottom about 9:30 a.m. Unexpectedly for me, we came out on the mezzanine of the lobby facing West Street and not the ground floor. We made our way around to the east side facing the plaza. There my boss saw one of the executive officers of the Port Authority who was directing people out of the building and asked where the rest of the PA leadership was meeting. He didn't know. As he spoke to him my eyes wandered out onto the plaza that had been transformed into some place I did not recognize. We have all heard a thousand times that people who jumped form the towers were pulverized when they hit the ground. They were not. They were broken. They were burned. They were twisted into unnatural and horrible poses. I felt my jaw loosen in its sockets and begin to drop and my stomach begin to churn. I have since learned that this is a normal reaction to such a scene. My boss grabbed me and we descended the escalators to the ground floor and passed through the revolving doors to the shopping mall under the plaza. The mall was flooded from the sprinklers and some of the marble was coming off the walls. I recognized a Port Authority police sergeant that I knew and asked him if he knew where the PA leadership was meeting. He said we could try the police desk in WTC 5. My boss and I headed east through the mall and then up the stairs to the police desk. We introduced ourselves and made our way to the back of the command center. There was a TV there, but it was only getting sound and very fuzzy pictures. It was there I first learned that the Pentagon had been attacked as well and that there were reports of multiple planes that had been hijacked and were unaccounted for. The information slowly sunk in. This was not random, not an accident, not a solitary madman in search of glory. This was war and whether I ever saw my wife and family again was completely up in the air. Just then my pager went off again for the umpteenth time. It was my wife. I asked one of the officers if I could use a phone he said there was one I could use in the offices around the corner. I sat down at a desk and began to dial my number, but a thousand feet above me tower two had begun to come apart and the line went dead, the lights went out and the building began to rumble like it was sitting inside a thunder cloud. I tried to make my way back to the room where my boss was, but kept losing my footing as tower two came down on top of us. I found him and we started running through the dark to the front of the command center. There we were greeted by a phalanx of firefighters, police and FBI who were running towards us. We turned aorund and began to follow them out a door that led to the concouse, but all we found was fire and debris. We shut the door and started to run back towards the entrance, but the building was shaking so violently now that we braced ourselves in doorways for what was surely the end. What a strange way to die, I thought. And at that moment the most beautiful calm came over me and I knew that I was ready for death. But it never came. The rumbling stopped and we carefully stood up and surveyed our surroundings. The emergency ligths were on, but it was difficult to see through all the dust. We gathered around a water cooler and put water on our handkerchefs or ties to cover our mouths with and decided to try and go out the front. When we opened the door we found pitch blackness and dust. The cops turned on their flashlights and then we saw the ghosts. People covered in dust - dazed, bleeding, crying. We grabbed as many as we could and stepped over the ones who were beyoned help. I looked at my boss and without a word we clasped hands and followed the police and fire personnel, not knowing where we were going. They found the door to Border's bookstore and smashed it open. We walked through the store and out into the open. We were free, but not home. There were horrors still to be seen and realities to be faced, but none very different than the expereince of many New Yorkers that day. I walked more than a hundred blocks to come home to my wife that night and I wept uncontrollably when I got home and finally relaized what had happened that day and how many we had lost. I will never be whole again. That day has stripped me of so much. There is a sadness that intrudes even the happiest moments of my life now. A silent persistent presence in every moment that may be pushed to the background, but can never be pushed out of the room. For a long time, I did not know why I lived and why so many valiant others perished. I'm not sure I even know now. Why? Why? Why? I have decided that I will make my own reason and that the reason I survived is to meet my daughter. She is that much more beautiful to me for all the terrible things I saw that day. She is the reason I survived. She is the reason I can endure this day every year. I am so grateful. So sad. So very sad. But I am alive. I couldn't believe my eyes all I could think about was I was there nine months ago and also getting ahold of my best friend that lives in Manhattan. You could not get through the lines so I rushed to my moms and searched for another number and I finally got ahold of him, he was o.k. I sat in front of the T.V. until 2 or 3 the next morning just crying and in a state of shock that this was really happening. I think it was a couple of nights after the WTC I was on the phone with my best friend and all of the sudden he said we are being evacuated from the apartment building becuase of some threat towards The Empire State Building, I was just terrified because you could hear people trying to rush out the door. For the next week or so my eyes were glued to the T.V. and I would talk to my best friend everynight to make sure that he was o.k. because he was there right in the middle of it, he even had to keep his windows closed because of the dust and smog in the air. I refused to ever fly again after that,but three weeks ago I flew to California. I refuse to let them get the best of me. Today as I sat in my car with a moment of silience tears streamed down my face. I can't even imgaine what the people in New York,Washington and PA are going through. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It is the day after September 11th, 2002, and still I cry at the stories and the images I see. It was shortly after 8:00 a.m. Central Time, a year ago, when the phone rang and mom was asking if I had the TV on. I said yes, I am watching something I had taped the day before. She told me to turn on the regular channels because 2 planes had hit the World Trade Towers in NYC. Never having been to NY, I knew of the Towers but was not really familiar with all they stood for. That of course changed that infamous day a year ago. My life has also changed and how I think about certain things. Even though I think we all knew in our hearts it was terrorism, it wasn't until after the Pentagon was hit that I was certain. I was on the phone with a good friend and we were saying, oh my God (literally crying out to Him), what is next? What is going to be struck next? When I heard about the plane crash in Pennsylvania, I immediately knew it was a hijacking that had been thwarted. I stayed glued to the TV for 3 days and in shock for weeks. I don't even remember sleeping or remember the few weeks after the 11th of last year. It is a blur except for what I saw. I don't believe this is something we will get over in just a year. I haven't. I still shake my head in wonder at what occurred. I still cry thinking about what those people must have gone through. I pray for all those that have lost someone, all those that survived the horror and live with it everyday. I pray for peace, but I pray also our country prevails and is safe from anything ever happening like this again. I have always been a proud American, but never more proud than I am right at this moment. I say this with all my heart, God bless the USA and all those that stand beside her and with her. Tell us your story: my son,who was waiting to leave for salt lake city to go to the mission training center in provo,woke me up and said "mom, i don,t think your soaps will be on today because the world trade center and pentagon have been attacked." even though i was a conservative,i was not terribly patrotic. that day changed me. i realize what a wonderful country that i live in. i do not want to lose the values that our nation stands for. i support president bush and pray that sept. 11,2001 is a day that will remain in the minds of the citizens of the usa. Tell us your story: I WAS DRIVING IN MY CAR GOING TO WORK,I TURNED ON THE RADIO AN LISTENED TO HOWARD STERNS SHOW, THINKING HE WAS JUST KIDDING( YOU KNOW HOWARD) I THOUGHT THIS CANNOT BE REAL UNTIL I SPOKE TO MY UNCLE IN NY THAT DAY. SEE MY UNCLE NICKY WAS THE MANAGER FOR THE WORLD TRADE FROM THE BEGINING WHEN THEY WERE BUILT. WHEN HE RETIRED HIS SON TOOK OVER. TILL I HEARD A 80 YR OLD MAN CRY AN WEEP LIKE HE DID THAT WAS WHEN I KNEW IT WAS REAL. I GREW UP IN NY AN NEVER THOUGHT THIS COULD HAPPEN EVER. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001 I was driving to my job as a 5th grade teacher in school district 131 in Aurora, IL. On the way to work I heard of the first plane crashing into the WTC, however, at the point, it was being reported as maybe a small private craft, and an accident. Later in the morning while my students were in pe, I heard of the second crash, and it was on film, it was then obvious that this was a deliberate attack by someone. All through the day it was sheer torture.. I have never felt such fear as an American.. I was afraid.. I wanted to be home with my husband and with my children.. At lunch time all the teachers went out for lunch to a place with a television so we could get all the information. It was decided that we should not mention the situation to our students until almost dismissal time. We have many children who go home to an empty house at the end of the day.. so we were told to tell them to not be afraid.. That was the most difficult task I have ever been given,, I was afraid very afraid, and I could hardly hold back tears when trying to assure my students... I do not know anyone that died in September 11, however the people that did are the people of us all..
