Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My name is Spring and on 9-11-01, I was 28 years old. Like most people my age moments like this were historical. Our granparents and parents all had their "unforgettable moments. I was too young to care about Elvis, had to wait until I was older to watch the footage of President Kennedy being shot to death next to his wife. These moments were very differents for those who lived through them. Now my generation has its own "unforgettable moment. Not that I thought that we needed one. I always hoped that we would be the first of many generations to live peacefully. It was a nice thought, however, only a dream. Who knows maybe someday my dream will be in the history books along with the great Martin Luther King. I was at work on the eleventh. One of my co-workers came into the office and started to tell us what had happened. But like most of the Nation, had no clue what really happened other than a plane had hit one of the trade centers. We were shocked by this "accident" and devistated as we watched on the television as the second one hit. I was mortified that someone would plan to do this much harm to so many innocent people. I can't even begin to explain what I was feeling at the time. There are no words to express emotions like the ones I was feeling, along with the rest of the world. Only because of this tradgety could I imagine the emotions my family members felt during their times of sorrow for the country. Now I was greiving with not only a Nation, but the World was greiving too. So many lives lost in such a little time span. When I could see on the tv that the towers were swaying I started to say "they're going to come down, they're going to come down!", it was too late. My heart fell when they did. and It was Replaced with hate. Now i was mad. To think that one person can feel all of those emotions at one time is impossible. I hope now that I never have to fell that way again. I still cry for all of the people whose lives were interupted by ignorance. The people who had no choise but to die. Men, women, husband, wives, brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles, neices ,nephews, friends, but most of all the mothers, fathers and the children will never be forgotten and will always be loved by One Nation. That One Nation to me is all of the people in the world that love and beleive. For if we beleive strong enough we can beat this evil that has come our way. God Bless is something that I choose to say. And I would be proud to have someone share with me something from their religous beleifs that means a lot to them. I love people. all people, but I do not like ignorance. Ignorance brought slavery and we beat that. Thank you Mr. King for that dream, may mine come true too...before I die. They were watching TV and something made me change the station from what they were watching, to the news. There was no news flash on their channel but I knew something was wrong. When I turned the news on there was a picture of the first world trade center burning. I said to my boyfriend " Oh my god- thats the trade center- all those people". At the time the second plane still had not crashed and people still thought it was an accident. Then as a reporter was showing live pictures of the first building, the second was hit. I then knew it wasnt a mistake and just thought of all the people that were in the buildings trapped. I started to tear up thinking, " what if that was my son or daughter?". I was glued to the tv for hours watching buildings fall, lives be lost, families be torn, and our sence of security be taken. I live not too far from a power plant and worried if that was next. All i know is that I fear the worst could happen again. In my mind I am also grateful for the people who helped and are heroes. They are in my mind and heart forever. At first I was in disbelief up until the second tower was hit. I rushed to our kitchen area where there is a television, however, they were doing a lot of talking and the picture was not really clear. All day long everyone kept asking us did you hear about the World Trade Center, Pentagon, the planes and all the people that were presumed dead or missing. The reality of it all did not come until I got home that evening and saw the actual news coverage. The image that burns in my memory is that of those planes crashing into the towers. It seemed as if it was a bad dream. I watched that one particular shot over and over again. It just lets me know that nothing is safe and we as Americans have to be on our toes at all times. The world does not have to be bad, it is certain individuals that make it that way. We as a PEOPLE should be able to live harmoniously. Keep hope ALIVE and God Bless America. Tell us your story: On September 11th I was working at home, listening to the afternoon radio show I like, when the music was interupted to say that The World Trade centre was under attack. It was time for a coffee, so I stopped and turned on the TV, nothing could have prepared me for the event I was to witness. The images were so difficult to watch, yet I found it impossible to turn off as my mind and body experienced so many emotions. I was angry that I felt compelled to watch, I was angry that one human being could want to inflict such pain on an other, I was angry that I was stuck 3,000 miles away across the Atlantic and could do nothing to help. What was happening may have been in New York, but those people were dying an arms length away on my TV screen. I was devastated, scared for my children, no-one can want a World war, and all the events of that day led to me writing the following poem. ?REMEMBER ME? CLOSE YOUR EYES, CAN YOU HERE ME? Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: About two-and-a-half hours before the first airliner was hijacked, I was in the process of seeing my grandson being born. Looking back on it now is even more surreal than usual, because seeing him born was one of the most amazing things I have ever witnessed. After he was born, we were all excited and didn't even bother with the television, which was in my daughter's hospital room. My wife and I stayed for about three more hours after he was born and then we got a ride home from the hospital with our grandson's other grandfather. The whole time on the ride home we talked about what we had experienced, and since the other grandfather hadn't been there to see the event, he kept his radio off as we talked. Arriving home at about 6:30 AM, PST, we were still clueless as to what was happening because after spending almost twenty-four hours in a hospital we were exhausted and wanted a little shuteye so we turned the TV onto the Cartoon Network so our other grandchild could watch something while I at least tried to get some sleep. The next thing I know my wife comes rushing into our bedroom, very excited, telling me that an airplane had just slammed into the Pentagon. I had to find out what was going on and when I looked at the television, they were talking now about the World Trade Center buildings collapsing. I am like going "What's going on here?" Suddenly, our happiness just turned into grief. How can you go from seeing a birth and then watching as thousands of people are being killed as two buildings, almost up there with the great wonders of the world, disintegrate? So, my family and I have happy memories on the anniversary of the most devastating terrorist attack ever, but it is very bittersweet. Our grandson still doesn't understand what happened that day but we want him to know, and others, that this is a wonderful country we live in no matter who is president, whether we like that person or not, and that he and others have many relatives and friends who are going to keep a watch on him and see that he is protected from harm. I was at Jonesy's Diner in Terre Haute, Indiana eating breakfast with my boyfriend very early on the morning of September 11, 2001. We were enjoying a heartily made Indiana home-cooked breakfast on a bright and sunny day while commenting on the traffic passing by us outside on historic US 40. Everyone around us was talking and going on as one might imagine would be happening in a small diner in the midwest, when I overheard the news channel break in on our local country station. They were reporting of the first plane hitting the tower. Before my boyfriend and I left, the second plane had hit. It was all so surreal. The planes at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania were even more unbelieveable. We were out to breakfast early that day because we are both college students, and were heading towards class that day. By the time we got to the Indiana State University campus in Terre Haute, Indiana, classes had been cancelled, and hoards of people were sitting around the TV's in our lounge's gasping and crying, and cussing too. Who would dare do such a thing to us, and why? HOW were they able to pull it off? What did they want? What were we going to do in response? Was there more coming? All sorts of thoughts were cycloning through my head, as I am sure they were in the heads of the others around me. We were all just speechless. I have never heard such an utterly eery silence on campus.By mid-day, there was a gigantic TV in our food court, with large speakers surrounding it. The lights were all dimmed, and all the seats in the place were taken. No one could peel themselves away from the TV, including me. Our school paper, the Statesman, ran a special edition. I've never seen people come together like they did that day. I'll never forget it. We may have been far from New York, but that day all US citizens were from the Big Apple. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was attending Rtgers University which is only about 35-45 minutes away from New York City. On the 12th me and a bunch of my fraternity brothers drove to Ground Zero to volunteer our services in any way possible. One of my brothers is a volunterr fireman and was called to actually go within the wreckage and find any survivors. My brothers and I helped in suppling the rescue workers with food and water. What I saw as I was doing my volunteer work were bodybags carried away, families who actually stayed up overnight hoping to get word of their loved one who was missing. I also saw every volunteer and rescue worker shed tears, I couldn't help but join. We cannot allow this to ever happen again, to many lives were destroyed and too many were lost. We turned on the news and they showed the plane hitting the building. I felt sorry for the people who didnt make it out of the attack. I lived on a military base, so to get back on to the base took hours. Later on that day we were told that another plane had hit the other trade center. Then they showed us the other plane hitting the trade center. By then we realized what was going on, the US was being attacked. My desk looked directly at the Sears Tower and I could not take my eyes off the building for fear that something was going to happen. The office was frantic with people trying to get information. I called my mother because I knew she would have access to a TV. I informed her I was fine and she informed me the FAA had ordered all planes to the ground. My company has offices in the Sear Tower and we had heard the building was being evacuated for safety. Moments later our building had been given the evacute signal as were most buildings downtown. I am disabled and use a van service to travel to and from work. Before we were given the evacuate call I had already contacted my transportation service to pick me up. As I waited on the street for my ride to come I was amazed by two things. Everyone, and I mean everyone was on a cell phone, and there were no planes in the air. Chicago is home to two major airports and for there to be empty skies sent chills down my spine. I had also call my wife, a school teacher, that I was enroute home and I was fine. Her school had received very scattered information so I told what I knew. When I arrived home I was clued to the TV. Until that point I had only seen still photos and heard stories. Watching the tapes of what had happen made me shiver and cry. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My name is Jan Pasquale and I work at HBO (Home Box Office) in mid-town Manhatten, 42st and 6th avenue. That morning I arrived at Grand Central at about 5 minute past 9am and made my usual walk up 42nd st. The day was an extremely important for HBO as we were going to get the Nielsen ratings for the first part of our mini-series, "Band of Brothers" which aired that past Sunday. I was expecting a big press day, spinning our success for such a great program. My thoughts were pre-occupied as to how we position the movie, when approaching 5th ave and 42st, there was an unusually large crowd of people looking up toward the sky downtown. It takes a lot to get New Yorkers to stop for something so the crowd definitely grabbed my interest. Looking up I saw that one of the Twin Towers had smoke coming from the top of it. I asked someone what had happened and they said that a plane had hit the tower. The towers are fairly far from mid-town and the smoke, at that point, did not seem overwhelming. In fact, I thought a small plane had hit the tower and that it would be quickly brought under control. I remember feeling sorry for the few people on the plane who probably got killed and hoped that not too many people got hurt in the building. I then hurried to my office building to get the ratings. Seeing that I am in the media business, I turned on my television to the usual channel - HBO. As HBO does not carry news, I still had no idea what had just transpired. My main concern was getting the ratings for "Band of Brothers". When the second plane hit the tower, other people on my floor started coming into the hallway to ask if anyone had heard what was happening. I switched my television to one of the major broadcast networks and became shocked at events. About the same time, the head of HBO at that time, (Jeff Bewkes) and the head of marketing (John Billock), called me to ask what the ratings and promotional points were for "Band". I remember thinking, "Are they kidding, don't they realize what is going on outside?" How could any media even care about our program. As soon as I got off the phone, I called my wife, Karen, who was at work in Ridgefield, Ct. She had no idea what was going on, never mind the severity of it. My window faces Byant Park (next to the public Library) and The Empire State Building. The skyline is downtown, facing the World Trade Center. Smoke was billowing up over the buildings, covering the entire skyline. There were constant sirens and crowds of people in the street. In the background, the news coverage was scrambling to get a handle on what was happening with a shot of the Two Towers on fire in the background. It was surreal. I told my wife that I would call her back as soon as I could get more information. I remember calling my parents down in Beverly Hills Florida. While talking to them, the first building collapsed. Later there was another rumor that a plane had struck the Pentagon and another had hit the capitol. After I told my parents that I was okay, I called my wife back and told her what had happened. She wanted to know if we were evacuating. I told her we were told to stay put as the bridges and tunnels were closed. Grand Central was being evacuated. Here I was, in the middle of so many landmarks. I was surrounded by Grand Central, The Empire State Building, Times Square, and Rockefeller Center. No one knew what was going to happen next. We felt like we under attack, yet it didn't seem real. There was no place to go and I could only sit in my office and stare in disbelief at the chaos outside and on my television. People began to leave HBO around noon, if they lived in the city. Other people in my office were trying to reach people they knew that worked down at the Towers. I was trying locate one person from IT who commutes by the Towers and when no one had heard from him and I had earlier expected to have a conference call with him. He was heard from much later that day. I felt sick to my stomach by 1pm having heard, seen, felt and smelled the disaster. It was obvious that so many people had died as the Trade Centers typically have well over 10,000 people on any given day. The sirens all day long had begun to unnerve me, as well as seeing the horrendous events taking place at the towers. We had already heard of people jumping. A woman in my group had heard that a close freind of hers had spoken to their friend in the Trade Towers, just before it collapsed. He was stuck on his floor and never made it. Another woman in my group had a friend who was a fireman, and he was missing. He also perished that day. By mid-afternoon, Grand Central had re-opened. I left to go home, selfishly worrying about the abspestos in the air and what kind of delay we would have on the trains. I remember looking at the people who had finally made it from downtown to mid-town. Their clothes were covered in ash and their faces white from shock and exhaustion. I remember sitting on the train and noticing looking at the shoes to see which people were from downtown. Finally, the shock wore off and it took every ounce of energy not to breakdown and cry for all that had transpired. When I got home, I was so thankful that I was alright. I also began to feel guilty for not going downtown to see how I could help. My daughter gave me the biggest hug I have ever received and I got so choked up. I was so happy to see my wife and kids, yet I was so depressed by what I had experienced that day (and days/months to come). The surealness continued that evening as I had forgotten that the roter rooter man was at our house to clear up a major drain problem. He and I were dealing with this drain well into the night. It seemed so insignificant and I was just operating on auto pilot. People out of the city can have no sense as to what that environement was like in NYC that day. Just as I have no sense as to what the people near and in the Trade Centers went through that day. It scars you for life and has created such a sadness for humanity to see what people are capable of doing to one another. However that day, and days to come, showed me the compassion of many people. It fostered great pride in our nation. It brought family values to the foreground and pushed greed to the back. There has been much good to come out of this tumultuous time. Although there is still much evil that exists. I believe that the human spirit will remain strong and overcome the ills of man. Life still has many great moments to share with us. I woke up at that morning like I did did every morning at 6:00 only this morning was different. I felt my throat hurting, and I had an awful sinus headache. My mom and I decided I should stay home from school. She went back to sleep, and I tried to sleep. After about an hour of trying to sleep, I went into the living room and turned on She's All That to watch. My mom woke up later, so I turned the movie off. She likes to have her coffee and watch TV in the mornings before my brother and sister wake up. That's when I saw the news on channel three. I thought at first that they were talking about the previous attempt to bomb the World Trade Center. I asked Mom about it, and she said she thought the same thing. At that moment they showed the image of the first plane hitting the first tower. I think I just stared at it in disbelief. It was such a shock to think something like this could happen. All the pictures on television really upset my mom. She was just crying. I couldn't cry at the moment. I just stared, wondering who in their right minds would do this to innocent people. I stared for probably 10 whole minutes, then the tears started to flow. I realized that there were going to be thousands dead. I realized that America was being attacked on that day. I thought of my school. I wondered how the kids and teachers were coping with the tragedy. I knew that my history teacher Mr. Fritz would have the TV on in his room. He was very big on current events, and if it meant crying while watching something, his students would watch it. I knew that if I were at school that day, I would just want to be home. I thank God I was sick that day. I was able to feel at least a little bit of comfort in that time. I was very, very, extremely pregnant at that time (due date: the 15th). so my morning started out like all the ones previous, slow and sluggish (any woman who's ever been pregnant will understand those last few days). i walked out of my bedroom and flipped on the television, just like i did every morning. the second plane had just hit the WTC when i turned on the t.v. it TOTALLY caught me off guard. i called my sister-in-law to find out what was going on cuz i just couldnt comprehend it all. like every other person i was glued to my t.v. i'd been getting prepared to give birth to my first child 'any day now'so i was already in a wierd emotional state. i remember that as the events from that day unfolded before my eyes, i started telling my unborn child what was going on; i dont know why i did that. then i just started bawlling my eyes out. i was just overwhelmed with every emotion. i was so excited that i was going to be having a baby soon. that is a feeling that cannot be described. also, i felt deep saddness and loss for those directly affected. i recently went through a miscarraige, two months ago, so i understand to a degree, the emotions that one goes through when you experience a any kind of loss of life. i felt anger. how could ANY human be so hard-hearted and cold. i thought 'what kind of world was my child going to grow up in?' i still, today (9/11/02), cry when i hold my little girl. i know so many kids lost their parents; many were born after the 11th and they will never know their daddies. it rips me apart. sometimes i think 'on a day when so many people lost their lives, i was bringing a new one into this world' even to me it didnt seem fair. i connect 9/11 with baby being born so i do everything i can to let my daughter know how much i love her. she will be 1 year old on the 15th. we love her too much. my husband and i are so thrilled by her. Tell us your story: My story on 9/11...it doesnt seem like it should be much compared to the story of the thousands that died, or the millions who were directly affected. It doesnt seem like my story should matter compared to anything, but as I sit here in English class, one year 4 hours and 15 minutes after the even took place, listening to the click of 30 people telling their stories, I might as well give it a shot. I remember we were all in chemestry class, by far my most hated and feared class of the year. Listening to DeMartino ramble on about so many things that we frankly didnt care about. About five minutes into class DeMartinos cell rang, after a short talk she told us simply "the WTC was hit by a plain." To be honest that really didnt spark my interests at all. And the next few periods went on as usual, we heard little to nothing in History where we were somewhat ironically learning about the fall of the Roman empire. Football was totally unnaffected, our coaches didnt even bother to adress the issue which was now starting to cause some dissettlement amongste the students. In Choir our directer, Couch, simply said that the Towers had been hit, but we werent going to let it disturb our normal lives. After a very long and very unproductive period we finally got to lunch. We managed to find a pen radio to listen to, though only two people could hear at once and not very well. Then we went to Fiztsimmons classroom and watched the 9/11 coverage with him. Finally I got to my favorite class, English...taught my Mrs. Smith who was the most liberal and easy going teacher I have ever had. She told us that it was forbidden for her to allow us to watch 9/11 coverage and we were supposte to go on with class, but she said that as she turned on the TV. It was in that class we saw the horrific imagages of the towers collapsing, and of people flinging themselves from the buildings in a last vane attempt to saved their lives, or end it quickly. Soon our school ban on 9/11 coverage was ended by the teachers, our last period teacher, Mr. Abbe tried to teach but we just ended up watching TV in another class. The rest of the day I just sat watching TV, not very interesting, but what else was I to do? The weeks that followed are history, but our lives will go on and we need only strengthen that which remains. In the end it will all be forgotten, the faces, the names, they will all be swept away in the infinite sands of time. So let us all remember them now, while we can. And please friends, lets also not forget so many other events that were terrible to an even greater magnitude. The bombing of Dresden, which claimed 80 times more lives, or the Nuclear explosions of Hiroshimo and Nagasaki. Even so far back as the massacre of the Indians by the conquistidors. Let us not be greedy in our tragedy, where this may have been one of the worste events in American history, it doesnt compare to events that have taken place, and even more events that will take place. My husband, 1 1/2 year old son and I were going through our morning rituals, when we heard that the WTC had been hit by one airplane and possibly a second. We quickly went downstairs and turned on CNN. While we watched the horrific events unfold, we had to continue with my son's morning ritual, which included eating breakfast. What stands out to me about that morning was the fact that, while the world was turning upside down, my son was as happy as can be. He was laughing and playing with his food as he would on any other day. I was holding back the tears; sad ones, due to the tragedies on the screen, but happy ones, because my son was able to retain his innocence through all of these events. Thank God for children!! It was my sister yelling to turn on the t.v. because the twin towers had been bombed. I ran into the other room and fipped on the t.v. and found out that a plane had flown into the building instead of a bomb. It was very shocking to wake up to such news. My sister got off work early to come home, right as she entered the door we heard the second plane crash and the news of the pentagon. It's hard to discribe the feeling of that morning, I was completely dumbfounded. Everything was a blure, it was so unbelievable that something of this hatred had struck so close to home. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My story perils in comparison to the many moving tributes and moments other people experienced. All much more heart wrenching that mine. I wasn't at either of the three locations on that day, i was simply sat behind my desk, starting my day talking to my friends, co-workers, a little sleepy, a little annoyed that it was only tuesday and i still had almost the whole week to go. Then I was told of a plane hitting the World Trade Center, I have never been to NYC, other than to drive through it to go to JFK airport, i believed as many did, that it was an accident, till the second plane hit, and then the Pentagon, and the Somerset County Pa. At that moment, I don't think i truly believed what happened, actually did. It was so surreal. I felt numb all day, I wanted to cry for those that didn't know. But what right did i have to cry? I hadn't lost anybody, I was just an everyday person sat at my desk, but then again, ofcourse, So were they. I was mad that these people thought they had the right to come into the United States and destroy so many lives and our security. I stayed glued to the TV the following, days, weeks, months, watching everything i could. trying to take it all in and except it. Trying to figure out how I would explain this day, this moment in history that forever changed the way we function, to my children. I wanted so badly to be able to help, to be able to say something of comfort to the many people that have lost, husbands, wives, sisters, brothers, daughters, sons, etc. But what could I say? A year has passed, and we still go on, we still see the images that were ingraved in our heads that day, some more vividly than others. I recently visited the Flight 93 memorial, the closest site to where i am. I was moved by the silence of the people gathered, even the small children. That day, there had to be close to 100 people there, it seemed from every corner of the county, everyone seemed to know they were on hallowed ground. But the eeriest thing, the most poignant memory, were the symbols of love left behind. A teddy bear, charms, crosses, notes, single flowers, even happy meal toys, everything placed on rocks, or whatever platform could be found. And nothing, and i mean nothing was out of place. It was as if the wind wasn't even blowing, nothing was moved misplaced or touched, with all the people coming and going, everyone new the intensity of the moment. I hope to travel to all the sights, I hope that one day i won't see a plane fly over ahead, and for a brief moment, wonder! And i hope that the men, women and children who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, are resting in peace, knowing they are thought of and missed every minute of every day, by someone, reminising that day. Now I we all go to work a little less annoyed, not so bothered by being tired. Hopefully more loving, more involved in the lives of the people we love. If the plan Mr. Bin Laden was to destory out county, You failed! You bonded us, under one unforgettable, lasting moment. Hurt and broken a little, without question, but destoryed? You're not strong enough for that, We the citizens of the United State of American, are more couragous that you will ever be, and we have proven that this last year. The message i have learned is live everyday as if its your last, don't leave words unspoken, love the life you have. Because, we just don't know!
