Though throughout the mourning kids started to get pulled out of class and were being taken home by there parents. I had no idea why and i didnt think of anything ethier. Before lunch time the princple came of the loud speaker and said there were bees of the playground and we cant go out for recess like normal. I didnt realize what had happen until i got home and my mom told me that planes had crashed into the world trade centers and the pentagon. I was in shock and it didnt really hit me until later when i was watchin all the news reports on tv. I felt really bad for all the people who had been in the WTC's that day and at the pentagon. The school didnt tell us anything about the world trade centers or the pentagon. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I have been revisiting September 11th for some school projects, and because of the one year anniversary. On September 11th, I had just gotten my husband off to work. I was getting my breakfast ready. Usually, I would watch some of the morning programs while I ate. On this morning, I stayed in front of the television for three hours. I would have kept watching, but I had to go to class. My husband called me from work and asked if it was true. We stayed on the phone talking while one of the towers fell. Images I will never forget include people jumping out windows, screaming, people covered in dust, and the smoke as the towers fell down. I have never been so scared taking the bus before. That day it seemed like the world stopped. Our University put televisions on in our buildings tuned into CNN for the next week. People would just stop and block people walking as we all stood in horror watching. As September 11th comes around again, I will never forget the horror that this brought to North America. I feel for those of you who were much closer. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. We will never forget. I went to my first period and then my second period with nothing out of the ordinary going on. At the end of third period, which for me was science with mrs. johnson, the principal came over the loud speaker and told the teachers to hold the students pass the bell. I don't exactly remember what he said when he came back on the intercom a few minutes later but he explained that the world trade centers had been hit by a plane and so had the pentagon. Soon after we were released to our fourth period class and we stood around watching the TV not really understanding what was happening. My dad worked in DC so I was scared that he was caught in the middle of it. I had to keep reassuring myself that my mom would have come and got me if something was wrong. When I finally made it home my dad came out and greeted me at my bus stop so that I knew that everything was alright. The rest of the night we watched the TV together and tried to find out what was going on. God Bless those who were not as lucky as me. On a sun-filled Autumn morning, within a period of two hours, the United States had lost its innocence, isolation and security as Islamic terrorists attacked multiple targets in the USA murdering over 3,000 civilians. Four civilian airliners, packed with passengers and fuel became deadly suicide missiles hitting and collapsing New York's World Trade Center and destroying a part of Washington's Pentagon. I was working as a journalist, reporting from the scene in New York City and visited "Ground Zero" twice - a hellish, gray gas and smoke filled area where only twisted metal and body parts remained. A place where I had once worked ? a city within a city from where New York's Twin Towers once proudly touched the sky. No image on television or in the newspapers came close to the gruesome reality that one would find in this mass cemetery. Slowly approaching the area, you could hear the roar of F-15's flying overhead, circling Manhattan. The smell of burnt plastic and rubber fills the air - burning the eyes and throat. You walk past American landmark symbols, such as the NASDAQ building with it?s sign cracked and submerged in debris and thin, grey dust. Israelis live in an atmosphere where senseless and barbaric terrorist attacks have almost become routine. Israelis have adjusted to a traumatized life style where crazy has become the norm. But for America - for Americans it has been very, very different. Americans had become so isolated from global affairs that on September 11th with total surprise they repeatedly kept asking "why", "why did this happen to us?" American culture had become so safe, so secure ? approaching uncomfortable heights of boredom which manifested itself into "reality television". On September 11th - every American had now taken a lead role in the popular TV series "Survivor" and "Lost ". But only for a very short period of time. For Americans are an intelligent and proud people who once threatened, join hands, hold their Stars and Stripes above their heads and transform a "sleeping giant" into a fierce and fiery eagle which is unmatched for it's potent, respected speed and power. Standing among the ruins of the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, wearing a white hard-hat and breathing through a gray and red gas mask - one could only remember the Gulf War. A time when all Israelis wore masks and heard sirens wailing and scuds exploding. In the middle of where the Twin Towers once stood were three gray, dust laden flag poles. One which would bear the flag of New York, another the flag of the World Trade Center and the third - the flag of the United States of America. Only one flag survived this terrorist attack, the American flag and three fire fighters made sure it was going to stand for a long time to come. American flags quickly blossomed in every direction - hanging from tall commercial buildings, taped to store windows and flying from car antennas. Nationalism had revisited the United States for the first time since the December 7th attack on Pearl Harbor. Police, fire and National guard soldiers created a five mile security perimeter. Soldiers marching in green uniforms with automatic weapons at the ready and armored personnel carriers patrolling the streets. It was a nightmarish scene, something that only existed previously in Hollywood monster movies. But now ? it was not King Kong or Godzilla, but rather human beasts which had turned the lights out on what was once America?s vibrant financial capital. In effect, this security perimeter created two cities - one which was completely evacuated leaving behind devastation and thick smoke south of Canal Street and the other up North ? clean with restaurant and hotel doors open but almost completely deserted. Traumatized New Yorkers took refuge in their cement caves as others headed for their green and removed suburban homes. The only activity was in the city to the south where brave rescue workers from New York and those who had driven hundreds of miles to assist were digging under intense search lights, non-stop for any signal of life. Many of these huge men, sweat dripping from their faces, were seen collapsing and crying from total exhaustion - not wanting to leave, not wanting to rest - their only desire was to find survivors who might still be alive trapped in air pockets below. Vietnam veterans had dusted off their old uniforms volunteering to join the search with sniffer dogs attached to their wrists. Tons of supplies were donated and placed at the site. Food, medical and construction materials were within a few feet of the workers. At this point only 159 bodies had been recovered. 20,000 tons of debris had been carefully removed - ever so carefully so as not to create further danger for the survivors and rescuers and so that criminal evidence could be gathered and analyzed. For a period of time, I was detained by the FBI. They ignored my New York Police Department press credentials and were obsessed with my Israeli nationality. After three hours they released me, taking both my film and press credentials. They were overreacting, but I could not blame them, it was the first time that many of them were face to face with terrorism. Some Israeli officials suggested that I file formal complaints, I responded, ?this is not the time, these are our friends and they are traumatized, let it go?. The policeman, the fireman, the uniformed soldiers in their new black boots ? they all had tears in their eyes. A piece of America had been ripped away from them. We were on holy ground, no one spoke at ground zero unless they had to. You worked, you ate, you rested and worked again in a deafening and depressing silence. You smelled death and heard only the sound of jackhammers. As one left "Ground Zero" you could not miss the hundreds of memorial candles lighting up the entrance to the New York fire department's World Trade Center Ladder Company Number 10 which had lost so many good and brave men. Thousands of posters were clinging onto telephone and electric poles with photos staring at you, descriptions of many of the men, woman and children who were missing. Darkened churches, parks and subway stations were also lit up displaying more posters and more flowers throughout the city. You could not escape the shock, tears, or anger - for America and the world had never witnessed such an evil and barbaric act of terror in the history of mankind. You could only think - what kind of people, what kind of animals could kill so many, could even kill their own Muslim brothers who were working in the Trade Center. As I was now riding north on a subway train to the other city, two exhausted and spent fire fighters sat across from me. I asked them what they thought, how would they describe all that they had seen. They looked up at me and responded with only one word - "war". Since 9/11 I have had events of major loss that were unconnected to 9/11 but which make the memory of that day very special. The morning of 9/11 my husband had gone to our community site to take our trash and as he arrived back home I had just turned on the news reports of the tower bombings. We watched the tower fall together, holding on to one another and weeping. Since that time, my home has burned, my husband has passed away and so have both of my parents. Today I have felt very heavy and oppressed all day, almost like that original day. My life is going very well at the moment but I think I am feeling some of the collective grief. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11th, 2001 was a day that I was dreading...I was to go in to have my tonsils out at the age of 29. I would be out of work for at least 2 weeks and possibly longer and I wasn't sure how I was going to be able to afford rent, groceries and all that good stuff. I was going through a painful divorce and life was looking rather bleak. A nurse came out in the hallway and gave me a fast-acting sedative to prep me for surgery. It hit me very quickly but just as I was passing out, I heard someone say 'one hit high and one hit low!' They sounded incredulous but I had no idea what anyone was talking about. After surgery I was on heavy pain killers and had no idea what had happened for almost a week after but when it finally dawned on me that our world had changed so severly, I was in shock. I was also in incredible awe at the tremendous acts of heroism and courage that took place in New York. Bravery at it's highest form. These are the people that I want to be heros for my children..not actors, sports figures or ficticious supermen but the real men and women who helped and saved others with no thought for themselves. Both civilians and emergency workers alike. September 11th was humanity's bleakest, darkest hour...but it was also it's brightest and most shining! Suddenly my troubles did not look so scary... Tell us your story: I was in my spanish 3 class for about fifteen minutes and a kid who travels between schools to get different courses come into ours and says "The World Trade Center has been bombed!" Everybody in the classroom is getting real antsy now and we ask to see whats on the TV. My spanish teacher ignores us and leaves the room to call her husband, because evidentally he is a pilot. So when the teacher leaves we're all going crazy with questions. "Who did it, are we at war, who would go to war with us?" So after what seemed like forever our teacher comes back and we finish up our class work REAL fast and turn on the TV to see a nerving and depressing sight. Tell us your story: As soon as I walked into my third period Geometry class, I saw Will in the corner of my eye drawing on the board and explaining what had happened that morning in New York. I was clueless. "What was he talking about? Surely, nothing like this could happen in reality!", I said to myself. Students were busily talking to each other trying to grasp information on the terrorism attacks and also not giving heed to the fact that we had a Geometry test that period. All worries of the test were thrown out when we realized that this information was a reality. Soon after the comotion settled down, we all began taking the Geometry test. All I could think about throughout the test was the terrorism attacks. Soon after, third period was over, and my mind was baffled from all the thoughts spinning hastily in my head. Not long after fourth period had started, our principal came over the intercom explaining to us what had happened. Never had the class been so attentive to what he was saying over the intercom. He told us not to panic and to continue with our classes as we would on any regular school day. I was overwhelmed throughout the day. It definitely was not just any regular school day. The class clowns seemed silent and the only conversations spoken were ones of the tragedy that had happened that morning. All around, I saw the dissapointed faces of the Junior Varsity football players, whose game had been postponed because of the tragedy. It wasn't until I arrived home and turned on the television that I realized the severity of the situation. Watching the news was just like watching an action film. "It's like something out of a movie!", I told my brother as we carefully watched. I had later tuned into the president to listen to his comforting words to the U.S. I listened to him attentively as he told the nation not to panic and let this change our U.S.A., but to unite as one, strong nation. Tell us your story: It was the day of September 11th 2001, I was in the hallway of the Highschool I go to, on my way to forth hour when my boyfriend told me the twin towers just went down. At the time I had never heard fof the twin towers. So I got into my history class aka forth hour and watched the whole thing happen in front of my eyes on the television set. Every chaneel had it on, they couldnt stop talking about it. They said that all the airports and everything was shut down. It scared me because at the time my mother was supoed to be on a plane coming back from L.A. Later that night my mother called me and said that she was going to driving back with some friends, and at that moment I had a strong relief that my mom was going to be ok. All I had was the comfort of my friends and the peolpe in the school comforting each other. But form that day on no one would stop talking about it so this moment in time will allways be remembered, because of how scared I was that I was going to left all alone in the world. It was just another bus evacuation drill. Everyone was sitting down and talking. There was a delay for some reason and they wouldn't tell us why. The bus driver came on the bus, holding the radio piece in his ear. He then told us what had happened and said that they didnt know why two planes had flown into The World Trade Center Buildings. The teachers would not turn on the TV's, so I had to sit and worry in school for almost four hours. When I got home I had many questions on my mind. Who, what, and why? Even watching the news for a couple of hours didn't answer these questions. No one really seemed to know these answers fpr everyone was in shock. I will never forget that day for the rest of my life. My life has changed many ways since September 11th. I now have learned not to take people or things for granted. I've learned to have a greater appreciation for things and to be a little more patient. My life has changed a little bit in a bad way too. I tned to jump to conclusions more often. Immediately after something bad happens, I think "terrorists" or "Al-Queda". My life has changed many ways since September 11th, mostly for the btter. I think we should remember all the people who lost their lives from the September 11th attacks and also all the people who knew someone who passed on September 11th. We should remember that we need to stop terrorists, domestic or foriegn. also we need to learn from this tradegy amd make sure it will never happen again. Most importantly we need to remember , through better and worse, America will always prevail. A boy in my class had told us at the being of the hour that planes crashed into the World Trade Centers. We all laughed at him because he was known for making trouble. I then went to math and my teacher brought us down to someone's elses class. I then saw alot of people sitting there watching TV. I looked at the TV to see what was going on and i saw the first towers burning. I watched stunned for a little while and then the second plane came. I sat there wondering what is this, did it happen years ago. I then saw it was dated September 11, 2001 and I knew it didn't happen years ago. I then thought it's a movie but so life like. I sat there and my best friend turned around and saw, she was scared, I looked around and saw people praying and then I knew it was real. I sat there crying in front of my classmates and some of them comforted me asking if there was some of family in there and I don't know! My grandma was catching a flight from Virgina to Louisiana and i was scared she might be on one of the planes. I later found out she wasn't! We then heard of the Pentatgon. We were all scared. It brought us back to the towers and thats when we firts saw people jumping. They closed up on one person and my friend sitting next started screaming. She said it looked like her mom. Her mom worked int he towers at one of the very top floors. My friend later called her dad and he told her that her mother had died. Her mother had been one of the jumpers but we didn't know for sure if it was the person we saw. In the rest of classes we watched the TV and for the rest of the weeks we donated money, stories, and pray to the people that lost loved ones or that were still working to get the people out. We did patrotic things for the rest of the year. Almost a year later of I realized he gave us freewill but that asnwer wasn't enough for me so I kept thinking. I then thougth God might have not thoguth of this happening but it did and we showed him that we have love, forgiveness, pity, and enough to sacrafice our lives and others things. I also realized without suffering there can't be compasion, without love there can't be sacrafice and forgiveness, and without tragedy ther can't be unity! Tell us your story: I was sitting at work when my daughter called to tell me that the both buildings of the World Trade Center had been attacked and were burning. I can not even begin to explain the shock that I felt or the horror. I have been at the World Trade Center and I have stayed at the Marriott that was attached to the World Trade Center. I got up from my desk to look for other people to be with and to see if they heard the terrible news also. After standing around for awhile talking I went back to my desk and since I did not have a radio I borrowed my friend's radio who was off that day. When I turned it on I heard that the World Trade Centers were starting to fall and that their was a plane missing over Pittsburgh. My son flies almost every week and I did not know where he was. We were all told to go home and when I went out into the street it was obvious that everyone was being sent home. It was a mad house since the buses were still on off hours there were none around. One of my co-workers was with me and I suggested that we go down to the first stop and get the bus. She suggested that we get the first bus that comes even though we may have to walk a little distance to get home. We got the first bus that came and it was packed when it finished picking up the passangers at our stop. When I got on the bus I sat next to a young lady who had just come into town but was going back home as she had just heard the news. She told me that she had a sister that worked in New York and she wanted to be home with her family hoping to hear from her sister. My heart went out to her since I know how I felt wondering where my son was. By the time the bus got to the second stop it was to crowded to take anymore passengers but the people at the bus stop were yelling that there was an elderly woman and to please pick her up. The bus driver opened the door and let the elderly woman on the bus. As she was getting on she fell and cut herself. The young lady sitting next to me gave up her seat to the women. The women was bleeding from her fall and we tried to help her as best we could. When I got off the bus I had about a mile walk to my house. What I remember most about that walk was looking at the sky and thinking what a beautiful day it was and how could something so horrible happen on such a beautiful day. When I got home my answering machine was blinking and it was a message from my son. He had been on his way to the airport to go to Reagan National Airport when he heard the news. The trip obviously was cancelled so he was safe and sound in Pittsburgh. It turned out he was worried about me because he knew that I was supposed to be going to New Jersey on a business trip and was worried that something may have happened to me. I thanked God that my son was safe and shed tears for all those who had lost ones that they loved. After I called back my son and then my daughter to assure her that her brother was safe I spent the rest of the day the same as most Americans did sitting in my livingroom watching the horrible tradegy unfold. Tell us your story: I got a call to turn on my TV. which I was already watching, I was a bit sleepy but I had already heard that a plane had hit the WTC. As I watched the TV I noticed a plane circling around the WTC building and I said to myself why are they letting that plane get so close and then it slam into the other tower, as I looked out of my window I could hear a plane flying very low when I looked up I could see the plane it was passing over us so fast the whole building shook we thought it was going to crash in our building next thing we heard that a plane had crashed in Pa. As I stood there watching on television I said I need to call my son because he took the train into the city of N.Y. and his stop was the world trade building. I started sobbing uncontrollably but couldn't understand why I also felt so anxious it was wierd, about an hour later I finally reached my son he told me he was in the subway when the plane hit he made his way up to the lobby of the WTC buildingand there were people trapped and frantic he said he could not leave them there so he started pullin people out and leading them out of the building he ended up saving 11 people they were the sameones who were in the subway with him he said he told them to follow him. I heard no more from him until he reached the ferry that connects you with Staten Island. He then broke down and started crying and saying mom you would be proud of me I saved some lives and all I want to do now is go see my wife at work. he went straight to the hospital she worked at, I found out later that he was so traumatized that he no longer could speak they gave him medical treatment he was covered in dust and he had absorbed a lot in his lungs. He now suffer from the dust, he was a very health young man and always took good care of himself, he now suffer sinus like systems and must use a pump he must be very careful about colds because it can very well go into pnuemonia, he has permanent damage to his lungs. I thank God he spared my child and ou lives will never be the same, he later told me he watched the whole thing of the buildings coming down and people jumping out of windows, body parts hitting you while you are running away. I was not able to handle this for quite some time , I found myself crying all the time seeing my son's body laying somewhere or I he would never be found. It took prayer and a lot of faith in God to get me throught it I could not stand to hear anyone talk about it or see it, but now I am able to handle it. Tell us your story: My wife and I had just dropped off our 6 month old son for his first day of daycare at the daycare center in my office building in Pearl River, NY. My wife took the day off from work in case she needed to pick him up early and was on her way home. I had just arrived upstairs at my office on the 15th floor. Just as I was approaching my office, my assistant turned in her chair to tell me something as my cell phone rang on my belt clip. I motioned to my assistant to hold the thought and answered the call from my wife who told me what she heard on the radio in the car on the way home. "An airplane hit the twin towers..." she said. "Do we know anyone that's there?". "Cesar, Vince, Janet... damn I know so many people there. Which tower was hit?" I asked. Three years earlier I worked in the Information Technology Department of Marsh & McLennan, Inc. After a merger, our department went to hell and I took a job an investment firm in Midtown. A decision that ultimately might have saved my life. Everyone that worked in the Information Technology Department that was in the office when that first plane hit was destined to die. Back at the office I struggled with my feelings while trying to stay in control for my department's sake. When the 2nd plane hit, I began making moves to have everyone sent home. When word came that the Pentagon was hit, I dismissed my staff immediately to return home to their families which was the only place anyone wanted to be at that time. Safe or not, people want to be with their families when terror strikes. After leaving, I rushed to pick up my son at the day care center before our building was hit. As much of an impossibility it seemed (being over 20 miles from NYC) anything seemed possible at that time. Driving home, you saw people driving erratically, swerving, running red lights, doing anything to get home quickly. Listening to the radio and crying. It was terrible. And here I was with my son who was barely over the excitement of his first hour of daycare. It was so terrible. I arrived home to my wife whose eyes were bloodshot from crying. She was on the phone but hung up quickly to tell me "One of towers collapsed!". "Completely collapsed?" I asked in disbelief. I would have the gruesome opportunity to watch it replayed several times over the next 20 minutes or so. They replayed it so many times that the live shot of the 2nd tower coming down went completely unnoticed until Tom Brokaw actually said "... and there you see the 2nd tower coming down. Both towers are now gone.". His voice was eerily calm as he reported on this catastrophe. I'll never forget that day. The next few months were filled with memorial services and distraught family members of those that I knew and loved. It's been a year now, but I know for sure I will never see life the same as I saw it before. As much as people say the terrorists did not win, they did accomplish one task. It was a time when there were no worries. People, along with myself, felt safe. I was able to walk the streets and not worry about something happening to me. The morning it happened was like everyother day. I got through first period with a nice little nap. It wasn?t until later when everything went wrong. I was walking through the halls talking to some friends when one of them said something that caught me off-guard. He was talking about one of the football moms and how she had two friends die in planes that hit the world trade centers. I didn?t believe it and just went on to my next class. In the middle of class my teacher told us to head into one of the other classrooms as we walked in we saw footage of the first tower. As we watched we saw the second plane hit and both towers collapse. We watched in every class for the rest of the day. The events of that day changed my life. I was now more patriotic then ever. Hearing the national anthem before football games brings tears to my eyes. When I got home I was relieved to see my dad. He worked at the Pentagon and after this I respected him more. Tell us your story: I was just out of the shower, running late, when Good Morning America went into a commercial, then seconds later came back with a bulletin. I knew something was wrong, because they don't do that unless it's something very important. I heard them talking about about an explosion in Manhattan and was watching when the second jet hit the WTC. I just stood there, seeing what had happened but not fully understanding the impact. I couldn't move - I just sat on the bed and watched for a good half-hour before coming to work. No one knew what had happened, as the rest of the staff comes in earlier than I do. We got a small TV hooked up to an antenna and watched what we could. I am publisher of a small weekly newspaper and we had time to get come coverage in that week's issue, as hard as it was. Sept. 11 is the birthday of one of our employees and it only dawned on us this week that she had no cake, no card, no good wishes. We won't forget this year. I have a good friend in Brooklyn and first checked with her. Her son was a student at Stuyvesant High School, in the shadows of the WTC buildings, and he escaped the area, but they were separated for several days. He was fine and made it home, but I can only imagine her fear and worry, which was only a fraction of what many others must have felt. Being from a rural Southern town, I didn't think I would be as affected, but I have been. Dena Birchfield, whose husband was on one of the planes, is from this area and many of us felt a link there; and none of us feels the same way when we fly, but I do what I did before 9-11 as much as possible. It still hurts, and it will hurt next week, but I think we have learned a lot about ourselves, hopefully enough that we never forget. It doesn't matter if you are from Manhattan in Kansas or New York, or Miami in Ohio or Florida; we are all part of a whole that was damaged and is still trying to heal. I had taken some temporary jobs to earn a little extra money to get ready for the baby. So I was sitting in work - in small office near the kitchen. I remember hearing a lot of people going in and out of the kitchen that morning talking - so I got up from my desk and asked one of the people what was going on. He said to me - Didn't you hear - a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center. I just stood there in complete shock - I couldn't believe what I was hearing and I just knew something was terribly wrong - that there was something more to it than a plane having a malfunction. I immediately rushed back to my office and went online and then called my mother. Then the other plane hit and my fear grew even more. All I could think about was my child.
