He mentioned something about being in the school office and people were watching the news and that a plane flew into the World Trade Center. I think everyone thought it was an accident. Our teacher turned on the television in time to see the second plane it. I think it hit everyone at the same time in that classroom that this was no accident. The whole room grew quiet. All day at school people were talking and you could tell that there was a real fear of uncertainty and anger and sadness. That day is burnt in my mind.... At the hour of the attack I was in P.S.# 10 in math class, and all of a sudden the alarm goes off and the building had to be evacuated.By the time we came back into the classroom's the Principal came on the intercom and said Student's and teacher's may I have your attention please. Our country has just been attacked, Just a few minutes a-go two planes hit the Twin Towers by terroists. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11th, 2006 My name is Rob Webb and I live in Bristol, TN. About one month ago I ran into a friend of mine whom I had not seen for about 9 years. We began catching up him about his near fatal car crash and me about my Red Cross volunteer work including being a Supervisor at Ground Zero. It was at this time that my friend got choked up and began explaining to me that he last his Aunt in the World Trade Center. At that moment it made the terrorist attacks so much more personal to me. I responded to Ground Zero as a Mass Care Specialist and was the midnight Shift Supervisor at Respite Center 1. After closing the Respite Centers I went to the Staten Island Landfill for a couple more weeks. I returned again a few weeks later to work at ARC 9/11 Headquarters in Brooklyn, NY as a Dispatcher and Courier. After leaving NYC I returned home and was given the opportunity to go to ARC National Headquarters in Washington DC to develope the first Operational Manual for Respite Centers. I worked with two other people, an International Red Cross Representative and the overall operations coordinator of the NYC 9/11 response and confered with the coordinator of the Oklahoma City Bombing. The ARC had never provided services directly and exclusively to the Emergency Responders within a security zone until the 9/11 response at Ground Zero. It was a very big honor to have been chosen from all of the Ground Zero Supervisors to work on the development of this Operational Manual that will be used as a platform in the event of another man made disaster of this scale. During the time immediately after responding to 9/11 I was also a Chair of the Disaster Services Diversity Task Force. These two projects along with 2 major floods in my area, a wildfire, and a chemical spill on the interstate kept me busy enough to not have to deal with the emotions enflicted by 9/11. Although I was not there during the attack, I was there during the Anthrax scare that we all seem to forget about, the continuing threats and false alarms, breathing the dust and ashes on a daily basis, that, to this day is still surrounded in a political mystery as to wether or not it was harmful and wether or not I will be likely to develope one or more of the diseases linked to breathing it that will eventually cause my own death. It was difficult to see the men that are always strong and walking tall come dragging in from the destruction, but on the same hand was also rewarding to see their spirits lifted, if even slightly and trying to smile as they walked out the door to head back down to the recovery site. I saw men much bigger and much stronger than me break down and cry. But they were always ready to go back until they had found everyone. I hope that I never have to witness anything again in my life like the things I saw, smelt, felt, and touched at Ground Zero. It personally took me 2 years until I was fully recovered from the overwhelming mental stress that was caused by the constant range of emotions. One of the hardest parts for me after returning home was that I had no one to talk to about my experience. My Red Cross Chapter could not relate to it. My family and friends could not relate to it. And I surely did not think that a local therapist could relate to it. So, I spent 2 years in a shell. I can only imagine what mental distress those who were actually there went through during and immediately after the terrorist attack. Especially the first reponders who were at Ground Zero through out the entire rescue and recovery operation. I went to my local 9/11 first anniversary event, but have not been to another since. I will not attend another one until I can actually walk on Ground Zero to honor those who lost their lives there that day. I spent many nights walking Ground Zero with Mental Health workers offering refreshments and snacks to the recovery workers. I will never forget that experience. I also watched as they tore down buildings like 5 World Trade Center...it was like living and breathing in a war zone. I have finally dealt with my own demons from those days, and I will most likely be dealing with health issues th rest of my life. I have moved on in various volunteer avenues. I am currently the Chairman of a Resident Council where I live and will actually attend my first class tonight of the Bristol Tennessee Police Departments Citizen Police Academy. My heart goes out to everyone who was lost, their family and friends who miss them every day, and to my fellow Americans who came to the aid of those affected by the attack of the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001. Another teacher ran in and told us that a plane had flown into the world trade center. First thing I thought was "ohman, thats so sad". I just thought it was a plane crash. We turn on the tv, and next thing you know they are reporting on the second plane hitting. When that happened I thought I was gonna get sick. Everyone in school was saying "This is our pearl harbor, blah blah blah". I didnt WANT "my pearl harbor". It didnt' really sink in though how much this would change my life until that afternoon I was driving through town and at the gas station the police were there and people were in actual fist fights over gas. She had seen on TV that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center and she knew that my husband had family in New York near the city. I could not shut off the television that day. It all seemed so surreal. I called my husband at work to tell him what was happening and they turned radios on in the plant where he works. I tried desperately to reach our family members to make sure that everyone was ok and was finally able to get in touch with them late in the afternoon. We are making our first trip home to NY since the attacks in a few weeks and I'm sure that it will feel very empty to not see the Twin Towers gracing the skyline of Manhatten. I still tuck my children in each night and pray to their guardian angels to keep them safe. In rural North Dakota we used to feel relatively safe but this has made me realize that terror can strike anywhere. AT the same time it has strengthened my resolve to not let fear cripple our lives. She sounded very frightened. I couldn't believe it when she told me planes had attacked the World Trade Center. My husband had just gotten home from work. (he is a restaurant manager. Long hours). Before I turned on the tv, I actually debated whether I should wake him or let him sleep. Then, I turned on the tv. I was in total shock and disbelief. I immediately ran to wake him up. We couldn't believe what we were watching.Calls from my family came pouring in. I was so scared. I cried the whole day. I kept my kids home from school. I remember us going to the supermarket that day. Everyone was walking with these blank expressionless faces. It was the eeriest, strangest feeling watchin these faces slowly walk past us. My kids didn't really understand why I was so upset. Now, 2 years later, I feel that they Do indeed understand the magnitude of that day. Unfortunately, the world has forever changed. Instead of hiding them from everything, we let them watch with us as events unfolded. They helped me attach a flag to our car... we watched the candlelight vigils etc... I have saved so many clippings etc from that day so as to never forget. There is one instance in particular that I will Never be able to get out of my head... ever. I was watching the news and there was a "montage" of pictures and sundbites. This man said that he was looking for his brother. He said that he used to push him out of his bed when they were little. Now, he wishes he could find him to hug him. To this day I would love to give that man a hug. I have 2 sons and can totally relate to love like that. Pleasant Christian School Located at 6000 radeke avenue in Baltimore Maryland. As brought forth the mornign lesson on of our school administrators came to the classroom to instruct me to prepare my students for an emergency early dismissal. I was then curious asto why an "Emergency Dismissal". My Admistrator pulled me to the side and said we are under attack by terrorist activity. For a moment i could not believe it.However in time like these I am quickly reminded that anything could happen. My administrator then told me that I needed to find a way to gently break the new to my students. I thought aboout the issue, and continued to think. GOD showed me that this was not a time to think Anthony But to fall on our knee and began to pray to God for his mercy o our Country. So i told my Students to begin to pray. They almost instantly asked why? I then turned on the televison that wa intstalled inmy classroom, and to my wondering eyes would appear that the USA as we knew would be nolonger. I began to cry at the glimpse of innocent, hard working american runnign jumping and screamming for their lives. My female students began to cry and the hardest most troublesome student that i had was in tears. Truly this day was a humbling experience. As an American living in Canada I felt terribly disconnected from my family ? both my blood relatives and my fellow Americans ? during a time of great need. When other Americans were embracing each other for comfort, I felt totally alone. And it would be months before I again set foot on American soil. Please don?t get me wrong, Canadians were also deeply affected by the attacks and history will remind us that Canada responded heroically and neighbourly to America?s disaster (by receiving, for example, numerous flights originally destined for the States but diverted following the attacks). Nonetheless, I could clearly discern on the streets of Montreal that my blood was ?red, white & blue?, whereas the blood of those around me was ?red & white.? From the very beginning there were murmurs that America somehow deserved it, that our foreign policies had come back to haunt us. (Interestingly, I could never get anyone to confess to exactly which foreign policies they were referring). Nevertheless, at the national level Canada always expressed solidarity with the U.S., and complained very little even when four of their own were killed by American ?friendly fire.? Truly Canada did stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the United States during this time, but oh, how I wish I had been home in Virginia on September 11, 2001. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Just another warm, sunny beautiful, early September, Tuesday morning. I arrived at work about 8:15 am. It's a very busy office so hearing someone say, "a plane just hit one of the Trade Towers" struck me at first as an accident Our office windows faces the two towers and when I glanced out of our 15th floor window, I noticed smoke coming from the left tower. "Oh my goodness", I thought, "what a horrible accident". Time flashed again as I got involved with ringing telephones when suddenly I heard another of my co-workers say, "there's another plane, it's going to hit the other tower". When I looked out again, I saw a large circle of fire and smoke coming from the right tower. "It's a terrorist attack", someone said. The entire office gathered and remained staring out of those windows frozen in disbelief, some beginning to cry, others mumbling perhaps prayer but most was quiet and in shock. Then anger took shape and form for this senseless, selfish, unhuman act of premeditated murder. The radio volumn was then turned up or perhaps it was already loud and the announcer's voice shrilly told what had just transpired. The office continued frozen at those windows watching the upper portion of the two towers both surrounded by smoke. Our view of Manhattan spoiled by such a sight and the thought of innocent office workers and passengers on those planes victims of terrorism. Without a word to each other just a look, we all had the same words being played over and over in our heads, "Please, Please catch those responsible and make them pay". Those victims were as innocent and defenseless as new born babies and didn't deserve to die. Nor did the heros who raced to Manhattan either on foot or in a vehicle in an effort to save people without a second thought of their own lives and well being. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My best friend and I were always late to school and we normally had to rush to be on time to science. For some weird reason, we were on time that morning, and we were standing by my locker talking with a couple friends.Then, Daniel walked up to us and said that there was a hole in the Twin Towers, no one really understood what he mean't by that, so we ignored him and went off to class. When we walked into 1st period science, everyone was standing at the front of the room by the tv's, and when the bell rang, our teacher didn't tell everyone to return to their seats. We were some of the last people to walk into class, so we asked someone what was going on. They told us that the Twin Towers had been attacked, and hundreds of people had died, and more were trapped inside. When I heard that highjackers had taken over our own planes and crashed them into the towers, I was scared. Before that moment I had never really known about the problems concerning terrorists, or other things in the Middle East. It was like a wake-up call for me. After 2nd period, the teachers were told to turn the tv's off and try to run the rest of the day as any other Tuesday. It wasn't that easy though. People were worrying and crying over family and loved ones that were traveling that day, or that lived in New York. No one knew exactly how much damage had been done, or if the terrorists were going to come back. I remember all after school activities were canceled, which included a boys football game. Some of them were really bummed, and complained about not being able to play, and i couldn't understand how a sport was more important to them than their own country. People really came together and helped each other out during that time,and we remembered what America was all about. Sadly, that unity has died out, and people have started to forget that it happened. Hopefully, the September 11th anniversary will help remind us to keep the unity...and that we are the United States of America, and we will stick together and get through our hard times. Being home on maternity leave I was free to wander about the house and get my morning chores done before my baby awoke, which meant there was little time for television. I was absolutely oblivious to the the tragic events that took place until I picked up the phone to call my grandmother in Los Angeles, California. After a brief moment of speaking to her over the phone she asked me how I felt about everything that was happening. In complete bewilderment I had no idea what she was talking about and rushed to turn the T.V. on. Feeling scared and confused I watched as the entire world changed in front of my eyes. Today, it still feels like a dream and I still can't bring myself to accept the fact that so many lives were changed forever and so many were lost. I woke up, did my morning routine, then went downstairs to the kitchen to eat breakfast. I turned on the TV to see the weather forcast like I always do, but there was no weather forcast this time. All I could see was smoke. I wasn't really sure what was going on until I saw a plane fly right into one of the twin towers. I couldn't believe my eyes. My mom came down and saw the TV and asked what had happened. I told her that I wasn't sure but a plane had hit one of the twin towers. After watching for a few minutes I went to school. I came early to my U.S. History class and saw that my teacher was watching the news as well. When class had started, everyone was talking about what had happened. We watched the news for most of the period and had a discussion on it. Everyone said that they were just stunned. Everything seemed like a movie. There was talk about it all over school. When I went home I found my dad watching the news. I asked him if they found out anything new. He told me that terrorists had caused all the destruction. Everything just didn't seem real. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The rumors started around my school at 1:00. Car bombs, nuclear weapons, and crashing planes were among the most common. I was scared out of my wits at 1:05. The faculty had made the choice not to tell us anything, to leave us out in the cold. I disagree strongly with their decision to do this, we should have known exactly when they found out. That was extremely unfair of them, but it doesn?t matter now, anyway. Besides the rumors, the other source of information was the cooking class. The cooking room had a radio in it that the students listened to until it was confiscated. They were the most frightened, but I admire them for telling the story over and over, while dealing with the internal struggle to comprehend the news. My science class started at 1:10 and I arrived promptly. The longest science class of my life. Eager to get home, scared to know. The teacher acted on her instincts and with compassion, telling us everything she knew. I remember looking around at my friends? and seeing nothing. We were all numb. The bus ride home was even worse. Junior High and High school student alike were in shock. I still remember looking up into the blue, cloudless sky and my mind being empty. Nothing, no thoughts, just plain blank. Being at home was the worst. Both of my parents work and my sister was still at school, so I was alone with the TV and my thoughts. After calling everyone, family, friends, people I kind of know, I hunkered down in front of the horrible images that displayed on the screen. Unbelievable. I hadn?t cried like that for a long time. Just tears of horror and grief streaming down my cheeks. I didn?t even bother to wipe them away, I knew more would come. I also prayed like I had never done before, like you see on TV shows and in movies. Unbelievable. My family came home at around 5:00 PM. They immediately forbade me from watching the TV. I had finished anyway, after watching footage of people jumping from the building. It was the most horrific thing I had seen all day. Never were my eyes to watch the news, or read a paper until almost two months later. The thing that I most remember was the people falling out of the towers. It was terrible. I will always remember the way the bodies twisted and turned like heavy rag dolls as the plummeted to the ground. The people holding hands as the fell really got to me. I had nightmares of that picture for a while, and still occasionally do. God know how horrible it must have been inside the building to make them jump like that. It is impossible to put into words how I have fully changed. But, I am no longer invincible. Life has become fragile and brittle. This is not to say that I have become depressed, knowing that doom is lurking around the next corner, in one of his many forms. Contrarily, I have become happier, more fulfilled. I don?t fear death, but accept it as part of life. Being on this Earth is only one part of truly being alive. Tell us your story: I was a 22 year old, first year teaching assistant at a specialized high school for the emotionally disturbed in Springfield, Virginia. It was the first class of the day, and I had just finished checking off students names from the roll call sheet in front of me, when the telephone rang. We were all used to the telephone ringing in the classroom, and no one really thought anything special about it. (The phone rang all the time, calls from psychologists to come and speak with students, calls from the main office for students to come and take medicine, calls from other teachers warning us that a particular students was having a rough morning, and to be on the lookout.) However, this particular phone call was different. The lead teacher answered it, and immediately said: "Oh no, oh that's terrible." Her hand went to her heart, and I looked up from the roll book. My first thought was that someone had passed away. She covered the reciever and said: "A plane has crashed into the World Trade Center." In my head, I said, "What a terrible accident." She spoke a bit more on the telephone with her husband, and then she exclaimed: "ANOTHER ONE JUST HIT THE OTHER TOWER!" and I said, "That's not an accident." Having students in the room who were emotionally fragile, we put on our game faces and taught our English lesson without discussing what was going on. When the bell rang, I said to the lead teacher, "I'm not sure what to do about this." She said, "There's nothing to do." Another teacher joined us at the door of our classroom, "Did you hear?" she asked. We nodded that we had. "We can't talk about it in front of the students." We all decided, but spent the next few hours scrambling for information. We heard rumors, that a plane had crashed on The Mall in Washington. A helicopter had been bombed on the landing pad at the Pentagon. We didn't know what was true and what wasn't. Being within 15 miles of the Pentagon, many of the other teachers had spouses that worked in Washington DC and the Pentagon. Looking out the windows, there were many people standing in the parking lot, dialing cellular phones, crying and trying to reach their loved ones. At lunch that day, the kids were catching on that something had happened, so we decided to make it a relaxing day. We showed movies instead of teaching, and the kids were calm. In the custodian's closet, a small black and white television was set up, and people stopped in to see what was new. Most of our students live in Washington DC, and are bused into our Springfield, VA school. All the roads leading into and out of DC were shut down, and we were told that we may have to spend the night in the school with the kids, if they couldn't get on busses home. No one wanted to abandon the kids, but no one wanted to spend the night separated from their loved ones. By the end of the day, everyone, even the teachers, were beginning to become frazzled, ready to leave, to go home, to be safe, to be with family and friends. We had Fairfax County police officers escort the school buses into the city, so that the children could get home. As soon as the last bus left the parking lot, we teachers all jumped in our cars and sped home. I remember looking out the window at the faces of other drivers. Everyone looked dazed. I arrived home, and my roommate was watching the news. I sat down on the couch beside her, still in my work clothes, and watched, for my first time, the two World Trade Center buildings collapse. The following morning, our neighborhood (which is closer to the Pentagon than my school) smelled heavy with chemicals and smoke. We could smell the Pentagon burning. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was sleeping in my bed with my boyfriend, my roommate, was sleeping underneath on the bottom bunk in our dorm room. A friend and neighbor came banging on the door yelling something about planes. My roommate answered the door to our friend's screaming. In a half asleep stupor my roommate asked if her boyfriend was alright, and if he was why on earth do we care. Realizing something was going on we turned on NBC news. At the time, only one building was hit. I sat and watched believing that it was some kind of accident, not an attack. I soon realized it was so much more. I threw a blank tape in the VCR and hit record. Being a history major and a future teacher, the first thing on my mind was preserving a piece of this event for my future students. I decided to attend class at 10:30 where I sat for an hour listening to the influx of false information and details coming from fellow student. Following class I met with my boyfriend who was still trying to get in touch with his father in NY who frequently works in the city and does business in the trade center. After many hours, we finally made contact and he was ok. I was also trying to make contact with my cousin who is a flight attendant for United Airlines out of San Fransico. Again all was ok. It was a scary time. Overall, there was way too much time to think. As time went by, contact was made with more friends in NY and all over the country. Total losses included my boyfriend's second cousin who was killed in the trade center. His Uncle Mike is a DC fire captain. They lost a fellow fireman, Glenn Wilkenson, in the disaster. It was a rough day for all of us. The pain and suffering will always remain in our hearts. The best thing to do is to move on and show the world that we cannot be trampled on and beat down. It was my sophmore year of high school and I had three classes that day. I was in Biology when our whole school got the announcement that would change our lives forever. The definition of flashbulb memoriesis vivid memories for the circumstances in which one first learned of a suprising, consequential, and emotionally arousing event. 9/11 is an event that I will remember is great detail for the rest of my life. It all started with a special announcement from Ms. Griffin, my high school principal. Her voice sounded shaky and scared as she began by telling us not to be alarmed. She informed us that one of the Twin Towers had been hit by an airplane. She was not sure if it was a terroist attack but assured us that we were safe. She told us to go about our day as usual and if she had anymore information she would notify us. My mind did not register the importance of that moment. I would soon realize the how truley horrible that incident was. As I walked through the hallway to my next class I noticed the faces of my fellow classmates. They were all white and looked paniced. Everyone looked frightened and confused. People were sneaking their cell phones in the restrooms to call parents and relatives. It was about 9:00 as I arrived to my last class of the day. My teacher had the CNN on and we sat and watched quietly in awe. As we viewed the footage we watched the second tower get hit live. There was a gasp from everyone as the events began to unravel. I began to really worry as I thought about what was happening. I remembered visiting The World Trade Center as a child with my family. It was the first time I had visited New York City and I had the time of my life. These memories hurt as I watched people run screaming out of the buildings. The footage looked like a scene from a horror movie. I could not beleive that it was real. I refused to beleive. Next I witnessed the Pentagon being hit. I made me realize how close to home this tragedy really was. Around twelve o'clock I left school and went home. As soon as I got home I flipped on the TV, learned sbout the plane crash in Pennslyvania, and called my parents. Both of them urged me to stay home and made me promise not to go anywhere public. They were very worried. After talking to them realize the seriousness of the situation. I called my relatives from New York and was relieved that they were alright. Finally I fell asleep o the couch with the news playing in the background. I had a horrible dream about the events that occured that day. 9/11 changed my life forever. I few months after it happened I visited Ground Zero. I went with my cousin's husband who is a fireman so we get to go up close to the observation deck. Even though time had passed it was still a mess. The whole area was covered in large pieces of debris. The observation deck was very upsetting. It was covered with letters, pictures, dried flowers, and writing. I read through the graffiti that was scrawled all over the wood. It was so sad to see messages such as, "I miss you Daddy," and "God Save our Country." Pictures of missing persons were tacked to the railings, all of which most likely perished in the Twin Towers. I will never forget the events of September 11, 2001. As I think about it I am filled with grief, sorrow, and regret. My only hope is that our government will learn from its mistakes and never let this happen again. All of these are sounds that were made on Tuesday, Sept. 11th as the World Trade Center collapses followed by crashes at the Pentagon and then in Pennsylvania. I was sitting in my 9:30am class as my professor began to tell the class what he had just heard on the news on his way to class. At the time it really didn??t faze me. Class was over and I went on to my next class. This professor began to then tell us that another plane had hit the trade center. At that point I began to wonder what was really going on. After class, I went to the Student Commons. I could not believe my eyes. Everyone was standing around looking at the TV??s that were on and others were crying hysterically. I walked around to look at the news broadcast. OH MY GOD! The sight I saw was almost unbearable. My first instinct was just to start saying prayers for the people and their families. I rushed home. When I arrived, my roommate had been crying and she told me that both her aunt and uncle worked in the Pentagon. We were both so worried. Then I thought to myself, ??I know people in the DC area too.?? My friend??s father also works in the Pentagon. Later both my roommate and I got the word that everyone was okay. I just sat in my room watching as the continuously showed the reenactment of these tragedies. I was in such aw, wondering why, how, and who. I continued again to say prayers, but this time I was praying for this country. I prayed for wisdom over our leaders. Today our country is at war. I don??t know if I agree with the whole war situation. I feel that it will only create more problems for not only our country but also other countries as well. If you trace back to what has been going on over so many years, these people were only retaliating against the U.S. It was a horrible thing and a lot of innocent people were killed, but I think war is only going to create the opportunity for something like this to happen again. I walked into the office and a co-worker with a radio on said a plane had hit the World Trade Tower. I'm like, yeah, OK. But as the buzz continued and the second place hit, I knew it was for real. We were all in shock at the office. My company opened up a conference room and put on the TV all day for anyone who wanted to use the room and see what was going on. I went in that room frequently that day. I took my lunch in there and attempted to eat while watching the horror that had ensued. That night, like most of the nation, I was glued to Peter Jennings and his mastery of the situation until the wee hours of the night, and every night that week. Although I continued to sob while watching it, I could not seem to drag myself away from the TV all that week. Like the majority of Americans, I was concerned about my family members and their state of mind. I contacted all of my brothers and sisters and my mother to touch base and make sure they were OK. Later, I found out that my neice and her husband and children were at Disney World in FL that day and had to be evacuated. The one time they were able to take a vacation, it had to be cut short. I am one of the fortunate Americans who did not lose someone close to me that day. However, my heart was and still is with those who experienced the terrorism first-hand. God bless us all. And God bless those who feel such animosity in their souls to do such a thing to innocent people. Bless them so that this hate is removed from their hearts and we can all live as one people -- the human race. Thank you.
