Tell us your story: Even though my story might not be as tragic as actually being at the attacks, the events that happened on that day were very scary for me. For you see I lived in the city of Norfolk, Virginia: home of the biggest U.S. Naval Base, fear to be another potential target at that time..... First let me talk about September 10, the day before the attacks. Everything was normal. I moved from Michigan to Virginia to attend Johnson and Wales University, a culinary school. It was a different time, a different world, we all seemed so innocent. The World Trade Center was there, the Pentagon was intact and the field in Pennsylvania was bare. It is funny because I don't really remember what I did on September 10, I do know that New York and Washington D.C. was the farthest thing from my mind. But the world as we knew it changed at 8:46 a.m on Septembr 11, 2001. I got up at 6:00 a.m. because I missed school the day before and I wanted to get there extra early. I walked down to my friends room to see if he need a ride to school. We stepped out of our dorms into the warm summer morning. Everything was quiet, there was barely anybody on the streets. The morning radio barely had any news on it. But little did we know that in a few hours there would be nothing but news on. We arrived at school had lecture for about an hour and 45 minutes. Probably by the same moment we got done with lecture the first plane had crashed into the first building.... So we were dismissed for a 10 minute break and then we would go into production. It's funny because in the student union they have a television and I do not recall seeing anything about the attacks. I guess the news didn't hit airwaves yet. I think we were in production for about 15 - 20 minutes, I didn't see my chef instructor anywhere and I was wondering what he was doing. He walked in and announced the words I'll never forget "A plane just crashed into on of the towers at the World Trade Center". Personally I didn't really react as I should, first of all I thought he was talking about a one man plane and second of all weirder things have been known to go on in New York. My concern didn't raise until he revealed that it was indeed a commercial airline plane. But still I figured it gone off course or there was some reasonable explanation. So we half continued into production for a little while when my chef instructor walked into the kitchen again and said "the second tower just got hit". I was wondering what the heck was going on. Thoughts would come into my head. Who was there, what is your family doing, and other things. There was even one student who left school because both of his parents worked at the World Trade Center, I never knew who that student was nor did I hear anything else about the situation. By this time everybody was in a panic. Because news of the pentagon getting hit started floating in. That's when worry turned into fear. Like I stated before we were in the same city as the biggest Naval Base and by air we were only 15 minutes from D.C. So we continued to cook but I kept noticing some of the most important officials of our school gathering outside the kitchen. They were discussing something. Finally my instructor came in and said "how fast can you clean up? There are rumors of another plane floating around and they think the base is one of the targets." We cleaned up and got on the road. I turned on the radio as we got on the highway. There were miltary vehicles already on the roads. I remember because those were the first things that I saw. And that's when I heard, the first tower had collapsed. Me and my friend just looked at eachother. To get to our dorms we have to pass one of the entrances to the base. There were military personal stopping vehicles asking where you were going and why? The whole city of Norfolk shutted down. The radio kept announcing places that were closing and that all military personal are to report to base. As we got to the dorms there was campus police around. We were not allowed to leave the building. I went up to my room and called my family and then I went out to the lobby and that's when I heard that the second tower had collapsed. A few hours later the crash in the Pennsylvania field was reported. Like I said my story isn't the most tragic one but seeing those buildings going down and knowing that anything could have been the next target was enough to leave an imprint in my life and memory. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at work and a co worker was telling us that a plane had hit the world trade center. I was in total disbelief. Then immediately I thought of my brother who is in the army. I know that I haven't spoke to him in a while. GOD knows I didn't know where he was. So, I called my aunt and she reassured me everything was okay. So, honestly I was okay until I went home and actually watched the news. I wasn't a Christian at the time but I prayed and prayed. Even though I felt a sense of loss it still didn't affect me. So I went to church that Sunday. The preacher preached a good word but it still didn't affect me. Now that I am Christian when the anniversary came it was all to real. I know that GOD has took his protection off of America. He is still going to get the glory. We as Americans have to look at is we rejected GOD. He is no longer in our school systems. If you are caught praying you are in trouble. If pray to the muslims god and it is okay. So I just don't want GOD to be blame for this. Satan is very busy!! He worked in them hijackers, Bin Ladin, and anyone else that wants to kill innocent people. I still give GOD the Glory. I also prayed yesterday for the families. I know that they went to work that tragic day knowing that they were going to see their families and loved ones. Then the terrorist had another plan. I mean it really affected me the way it was suppose to affect me from day one. I don't want to downplay what the terrorist did but I just want it made known that GOD never left and he is still here. Like I said I prayed for the families and I prayed for the terrorist also because if they don't change their wicked ways. The repayment is deep. You reap what you sow. I really realized how much I loved my country. I am very much proud to be an American. That was the first thought I had when I saw the World Trade Center fall. The thought keeps coming to me over and over, like a small child, ?I wanna go home.? ?I want my Mommy.? But there?s reality. I am home and I am the Mommy. It's like I want that place of safety and innocence again...but it's forever gone. How I ache for the families who have lost their loved ones in this terrible atrocity against innocent people. I remember all through WWII that we were so proud that we kept the enemies of the world from landing here...from desecrating our soil. Now that's no longer true. I was recently in Hamburg, Germany and our tour guide said that 80% of it had been bombed out during WWII. There were only a few ancient monuments left. The WTC weren't ancient, but they were monuments of our strength and ingenuity that are gone forever. E-mails flooded my computer today saying ?Go out on your front porch and light a candle at 7:00 p.m. tonight to show the traitors of this world that we in America are united in our resolve to wipe out terrorism.? It was just dusky dark as I made my way out the front door and placed my big three-wick candle on the porch rail. I lit those three wicks and thought of the Holy Trinity as I did it. It caused me to pray for the families of the victims of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. I prayed for wisdom for President Bush and his cabinet. I thought, ?He?s too young a man to have this burden thrown on him.? I sighed and was happy that it did not happen on Bill Clinton?s watch. He?d probably been off playing with some young chick. ?Thank you, Lord, for choosing W. to lead our country through this mess.? Then I stepped out onto the circular driveway, crunching Torrey Pine needles as I walked, and looked up and down the street. There were no other candles flickering in the darkness. I was alone in performing this world-wide ritual of solidarity on Summit Avenue. Ours is an old neighborhood. Mostly retired people live here. Even a few homes are just vacation homes, used only in the summer months. Had these people seen too many wars? Had they cried too long over this disaster? Had the adrenalin coursed enough in their veins? Or, perhaps they didn?t have computers? Were they not told of this momentous event? As my thoughts raced on, suddenly out of the darkness across the street, there appeared five young people from the apartments in the back. They were laughing and chattering as they lit their candles waving them at passing cars. I waved to the young people but they never returned the wave or spoke to me. Then, just as quickly they blew out their candles and skipped back to their apartments chattering and laughing as they went. They had done their warm and fuzzy thing for America. This was their contribution to the war effort. Had their lives been changed by the experience? Not likely. They had grown up in a land flowing with mild and honey, of peace and prosperity. They did not have a clue what war was all about or what was expected of them. The old-timers of the neighborhood, who had not participated, knew only too well that lighting candles did not cut it. Many were Veterans of Foreign Wars. They had lived through WWI, a war that was to end all wars. They had survived the Great Depression and the dust bowl days of the Thirties and then WWII?another long war and many short wars after that. Some were declared wars. Some were not. They knew that rituals are just that?rituals. You don?t fight wars with warm fuzzy feelings. Wars are for killing and breaking things. All of us old-timers on Summit Avenue knew that there is much sacrifice involved when a war is fought. After our men served in WWII, then our children had to go fight more wars. Vietnam, Desert Storm. Some gave their lives. Tonight I was the only old-timer waving a flag and lighting a candle. Although I didn?t allow the ?super information highway? of the Internet to pass me by, I felt foolishly out of step this dark, starry night when this generation was out waving candles and doing their thing. All of a sudden the news breaks in that a plane hit The World Trade Center. I thought they were talking about a little Cessna or something like that. I went out to Linda's (co-worker)desk and ask if she had heard. She told me a passenger plane had hit. We were horrified... we did not know if it was an accident or... Of course as the day went on we all heard all the horrible events... I was glued to my radio... I could not work. My husband's office is next to Dobblns Air Force Base...they all left and went to a friends house to watch television. I've been to the towers... in 1977 my Mom moved us back to the States after living in Puerto Rico for 10 years. We went to New York City to visit a friend and he took us there. I was wowed by their heigth... every picture I've seen has had those two buildings standing tall. More important are all those lives lost... one year ago and you still feel a wrench in your heart. I am very sad this day, but I have to go about business... that is how I handle things. I saw the planes crash into the world Trade Center and the Pentagon and realized we were at war. I also realized this war would be more destructive than any other war and that it will be on a American soil. It was also historic because innocent civilians were attacked. Has your life changed because of September 11,2002? if so tell us how. Yes it has changed, because I travel a lot. Twice a year I travel on air planes, therfore there is a a possibility of my plane being highjacked. Because we live in a city surrounded by the millatary and water, there is a possibility that terrorist would blow up one our tunnels or bridges. Living in this area makes us more us more of a target. I always think of this possibility. What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? After we were attacked, many Americans immediately wanted to help. We realized what heroes, the firefighers,police officers, and rescue people really are. Also construction workers and iron workers sifted through the rubble for months in order to give the dead a decent burial. Thousand of Americans linked up to give blood, food and suport to anyone that needed it. Americans came together as one united nation in a crisis. Like many others that day I called my mother from my cell phone to let her know I was okay and stayed on the phone with her for almost two hours of the whole event. She still had her loved one at the end of it all...many others around the country weren`t so lucky. It was the most traumatic event in my entire life. I will never forget the sights and sounds knowing all the people that died so horribly right before my eyes. I will never recover from the shock of running on the streets of NYC from the debris of a falling 110 story office tower. The sound of my mother screaming helplessly for me to run as she watched it live on TV from across the country is burned into my mind. I will always feel this guilt for escaping and surviving while those people had to go through that horror. On 7Sept2001 I had visited the observation deck on the roof of tower 2 and felt weak thinking about falling off that building. Then days later I stared up at those trapped people from the safety of the street as they were burning, falling and living my worst nightmare. It tears me apart inside. That day I don't remember what I was doing that day because it was so long ago. Tell us your story: As I awoke one tuesday morning in early September, my thoughts turned to what roots sweatshirt i would wear, what i would have for breakfast and weather my teacher would believe that i really did do my homework and jsut forgot it at home. I carried on as usual getting to school at arounf 8"20 am, meeting my freinds in the school yard and discussing last nights television shows. Nothing out of the ordinary. It wasn't until my principal made that memorable announcement on the P.A that i began to realize this was not such an ordinary day after all. At 8:45 am on Tuesday September 11, the school announcements had just finsihed. I started shuffling through my books to prepare for my first subject of the day. Religion. Little did i know that at the same time, American Airlines flight was crashing into the north tower of the world trade centre in New York City. Later that day you heard that peaople thoght this crash was mearly and airplane accident, but at 9:03 am as we were proceding in out studies, a second plane, United Airlines flight 175 crashed into the south tower. Images of these planes crashing into these significant towers and bursting into flames will always be in my mind. Scenes of terrified people in the windows of the buildings and the despiration of those who chose to jump from floors high, make me feel sick to my stomach. By about 9:10 am most people realized that 2 planes crashing into the World Trade Centre Towerd like they did was not just a coincidence but something more. As I was wondering what new pieces my class would learn in instrumental music that year, at about 9:40 am American Airlines flight 77 crashed into a helicopter landing pad at the Pentagon, a well known nerve centre for the United States military located in Washington D.C., killing everyone on board. The news of terrorist attacks on one of the biggest countries in the world was begining to spread quickly. While i was chatting with my friends and watching the guys play basketball at 10:10 am, the south tower in New York plummeted to the ground and United Airlines flight 93 en route from Newark to San Francisco crashed into a feild in Jennerstown, Penn., which is about 20 km southeast of Pittsburgh, no survivors. Aboard this aircraft, the passengers knew they were being hijacked. They also knew of the tragic events in New York and Washington. A group of 3 passengers had the presence of mind and strength of spirit to contend with these hijackers inorder to prevent more attacks on their country. They probably thought that as long as they were going to die, they might as well save their country as well. Those brave men and women were hero's to think not of themselves but of all the other people the the United States. Mass hysteria, panic, devistation and ciaos were all apparent on the streets of New York City. Sights of people running from burning buildings crying and bleeding are hard to erase from my mind. Innocent citizens covered in ash and debris who witnessed this wretched attack was all i could think about for weeks. You saw and heard of about people giving thir time to help and volunteer with all that they could. Off duty doctors and nurses would come to what was later called Ground Zero. All arounf, strangers were helping strangers. The New York Firefighters, Police offices and Paramedics who pride themselves of being the greatest in the world were faced with a disaster never before imagined. From this tradgedy arose numerous heroic stories of firefighters in particular showing great acts of heroism. These men and womenput their own lives in danger to save the trapped and the helpless. It is the image of these fearless indivudials that have inspired me to think of all the good going on during this devestating tradgedy. Before September 11 the word terrorism was not a part of my vocabulary. I really didnt have a good idea of where Afganistan was and I had never heard of Osama Bin Laden but as the events of 9-11 unfolded i was becomming more aware of such things. Before September 11, i didnt think twice about getting on an airplane. It never orccured to me that those metal dectors that we go to before getting on a plane were for our safty. Now i am much more aware. Just as we have heard our parents and grandparents speek about where they were November 22, 1963 which was the day John F. Kennedy was shot or what they were doing when canada won the Canada vs. Russia summit series in 1972, i too will always remember that i was in the seconf week of grade 8 and st bonaventure school in toronto on a day that began as ordinary as any other but quickly changed to have some of the most significant days in american and world history. What I did, or how I felt; or, what my goals for the day were, or countless other days and weeks before then. I can't recall what I felt like the morning of Sept. 11. or even what I had for breakfast; wether it was a sunny day or not. I think that, in itself, and in hindsite, makes me a bit sad. To think that my days (and other peoples days) have to be that eventful to be remembered... I assume that I hated to get out of bed like many days and stopped at that little store on mountain road on the way to work --like i usually did most mornings for coffee. There wasn't anything unusual about that day and thats pretty much the life in Vermont. People move here from there and everywhere to live in that mundane uneventful security... But that was to end suddenly. That voice. It came over the radio as if it were an interupting message from the gods and everything from that moment on would be incapsulated into the annals of time. Time would stand still in my memory as a vivid and tramatic playback that still seems to be drifting in a series of pictures and stunning events that have revolved in my mind everyday sinse Sept. 11th. There isn't a day that goes by that in some way I don't think about the events of that day or the consequences of that day. I assume that I was driving along merrily in my Volkswagen Bus; up to work at Stowe Vermont at a resort that I worked for--and for once, I actually enjoyed the job. The people that ran the resort came from NYC and we would get along pretty well because it was something that we had in common. I wasn't born there but I spent most of my school years in and around the area and then college in the city --I've always been a new yorker at heart. That voice came over the radio and I can still hear it as clear as you could get it without being considered unstable. It went something like this: "There seems to have been some type of accident in NYC; it seems that some type of plane has hit one of the World Trade Towers." " No real report as to what type of damage or casualties may have occured but we'll keep you posted as to the events going on down in NY." That was it. Nothing terribly allarming. Just something that I found a little sad that perhaps a small plane had vered off its course and must have hit the building. I was only a few moments from work and being the news junkie that I am, was glued to the radio trying scoop up anything new that might develop. I had just pulled into the parking facility and was trying to get that latest piece of news before I lept from the Bus and started my day. I got it! There was a break for the news just as I was ready to leave. "The news out of NYC is that a large airliner has struck the World Trade Center and that the news coming out of New York is bad and that there is abviously something very big going on down in NYC right now." That was something to the effect of what he said and it stuck. I can hear that today. The thought of those words and that broadcast conjers up enough memory to give me the goose flesh. Now my news junkie was peaked and I needed more info. My boss lived there on the grounds and he came out onto his balcony and greeted me like he usually did and gave me some simple instrutions and odd things that needed to be taken care of--funny to think of the way we go to work unlike people in NYC. --they would never dream of such a work invironment. When he finished, I asked him if he was watching the news and he replied, "No why?" I said, "There is something going on in NY." "In the City" he stated. "yea" "They said that a plane hit the World Trade Center or something like that." "Really!?" he said in puzzelment. "I'll turn on CNN." I was really bated by what was going on when he turned into the condo to turn on the TV. I thought that we had the unspoken understanding that he would fill me in on the events as they were unfolding. I was still standing in the middle of the parking lot looking up at the condo when I heard it. It wasn't Dan--my boss. It was the voice of his wife Donna. Which took me a bit by surprise because I haden't noticed her up in the condo that morning. The only thing I heard was her say in a very loud, unrelenting and alarming tone was: "Oh my god!" "Oh my god!" the third time she said it it seemed as one word "ohmygod!" It wasn't at all what I wanted to hear. I was still standing in the middle of that parking lot waiting for Dan to come out with some type of news as to the situation. I think that I may have made some feeble and sheepish attempt at hailing him to the porch "but she just kept saying "Oh my god!" rythmically over and over that simply kept overwhelming me and my attempt from this uninformed position to hail him. I just wanted her to stop saying that, was all i could think. Everytime she said it, my angst would compound geometrically and now I was getting really worried about friends I had in the area. You have to understand: for a New Yorker--such as her, to hear her be that rattled meant that this was no small dealings, something very bad was going on and to a fellow New Yorker I was rattled too. I had to get to a TV! Well, so many things have been said about that day and the general concensous is that most people are really at loss as to dramatic and presice words that will every fully capture the feelings of that type of devestation. When I walked into the lobby and front desk they already had on CNN to my surprise. When I caught the first glimpse of that tower in smoke and on fire I was --stunned, i guess. Void to the point of stupid. "Whoa!" was all that came out of me. The girl working there was a simple country girl from the northeast part of Vermont and she seemed to be at a distance to all the goings on as if it were another rented movie for her. I can't tell anyone that has never lived in NYC (not just visited) lived in the city, for a length of time what those buildings came to mean to each person in the city. The type of security they gave to the mind to always see that symbol of strength there everyday. They built up a tough-comfort like psychological package that became quit reassuring after a while I was there in '93 when the first attack happened and I watched it from the my building there. What I saw that morning was bad and terribly unsetteling. I could see that tower was starting to look a little 'sick' in the way it was leaning and that it would need some work after that fire was out. Living in NYC after '93 one always wondered about what devestation would be heaped if one of those things ever had the misfortune of falling over--and I was thinking about that again Sept. 11th... I was also thinking about my best friend Erika Rier--Where was she? I now that she works down close to there and it was commuting time for her. I went out to do some of my work for the day with the intention that I would go i from time to time and keep myself posted on the events. I wasn't prepaired at all. I went back in and another plane had hit. I said in wonder "Is the fire jumping?" " "Is it spreading!?" "The other tower is on fire" The look on my face must have been rather ammusing for her but she dryly stated " No, another plane hit it" Now was the time that the frantic set in that would last for about a week without much in the way of rest! Now was the time to get to a phone!.. I told people my situation and I had an agreeable full range of calls anywhere. Nothing was going into NYC from Vermont in the way of phone calls for days. I tried to call others in Conn. but they had jammed that up too. I got a frantic call out to A very signifcant person for support that had already tried to contact me. Elzabeth Vidal lived in Ohio and was in imeasurable source of support for me on that day. Nothing was giving in the way of calls so I tried again to go back to work and pull myself away from that wretched seen. I do remember everything now. I was trying to go through the motions of my work and trying not to be visibly scared and upheaved about things down in NYC, when all I wanted to do was go back to the TV. --and so i did. I'll never forget this as long as I live: I walked in and looked at the TV once more and said in some type of confusion, " There's so much smoke I can't even see the buildings." And here it came from the young girl from Vermont: "There gone!" "I just watched them fall down!" she stated. As indifferently as an anamatron. I was stunned! I could never in my wildest dreams think that I would see the day that the towers fell to the earth... The rest of the day would be spent in the usual frantic pace that everyone was gripped into on that day: parked in front of the tv''s with the stunned paralysis of sheep-to-the-slaughter --with intermitent fits of indirect and usless rage. This would be the highlite and futility of weeks to come as well. No I don't remember anything about September the 10th. But everything about Sept. the 11th is sharpe and ever present. I can remember the sun, what was said to one another, what I did, what the air felt like outdoors and the crispness of it while it tried to work in vain. I wish these days would come to me wrapped in joy to be remembered so vividly. But that is a lesson to be learned. From that day on I have had a new outlook on life and what it really means to be alive when all those people lives had been cut so terribly short. I strive now to find good intense things everyday that I can remember as vividly as September the 11th. Tell us your story: I had just arrived at work at 9 a.m. Our office had been temporarily moved to the 8th floor, and my desk was near the offices services department. I went in to take a fax, and noticed the T.V. was on in there, which was extremely unusual. I asked why it was on, and one of the men told me that something had happened at the World Trade Center in New York. I turned on my radio, and listened as the horror unfolded, not only in New York, but later about a mile away from my office, at the Pentagon. I called my boyfriend, an Anne Arundel County firefighter who'd just gotten off his shift, told him to turn on the TV, and he told me what was going on for over an hour. After the second plane hit the Trade Center, Jim said to me, "I don't think that's the last of it." I told him I thought that whoever had done this probably wouldn't do anything further in NY, they'd hit somewhere else. Sure enough, about 10 minutes later, we heard the news that a plane had gone into the Pentagon. I hung up and ran up to our terrace on the 8th floor, and we could see the Pentagon burning. It was pretty much chaos after that, the town was closing down rapidly, the Metro unusable, and we were told to try to get home as best we could. My older son somehow managed to get through on the phone to me from his office in Austin, Texas, to make sure I was all right. I assured him I was okay, just trying to get home, and finally got a ride with a couple women from work who lived not too far from me in Fairfax County. As we drove south on 395 past the Pentagon, it was so horrible to see the building I'd grown up admiring every Saturday as I went from my home in Alexandria to my piano lessons in Maryland with a big gaping hole in its side, and the heliport that I always hoped to see a chopper landing or taking off, no longer there. And Shirley Highway, that bustling, always busy thoroughfare from Washington to points south, was totally empty except for the few cars like ours that was leaving the city to try and find safety and solace in our homes with our loved ones, glued to the TV watching over and over the events of that horrible, terrible day. Now I know how my parents felt when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, the loss of innocence and the feeling of security and freedom as we knew it. But we persevered then, and we have done it now. Tell us your story: I woke up that September morning and slipped out of bed where my dear husband and my beautiful 15 month old son still lay sleeping. So began my "usual" morning routine, or so I thought. I turned on the radio and expected to hear the usual programming. Instead, what I heard was the President of the United Stated giving a speech. At first I thought this was just a joke. What is the President doing on the radio this early? I just brushed it off and walked away. I woke my husband up so that he could begin to get ready for work. The President was still on the radio. I know I heard him say the word tragedy and I think I heard him say God Bless America. I was not paying much attention. Then the radio hosts came on and they were not their "usual" upbeat and humourous selves. Instead they were quite somber and talking about some terrible thing that has happened. My husband, oblivious as myself about what was happening, was by now in the shower. It was at this time I thought, "If the President was on and these guys are so glum, there must be something happening." So I decided to turn the TV on. I could not believe my eyes!! The tower was on fire. I ran and told my husband. He could not believe it either. I ran back to the TV and listened to the newscaster. Then the second plane hit. My stomach felt like it had just been kicked. I was floored!! It was an ATTACK!! I ran to my husband and told him what I was seeing on TV. He still could not believe it. I ran back to watch what was happeing on TV. When the first tower fell I gasped. Is this real??? How could it happen??? What about the people??!!! WHAT IS HAPPENING?!?!?! I ran to my husband and told him he had to see what just happened. He was in shock and disbelief and he sat and watched. New York was filled with smoke. It looked like a war zone. Our son woke up in the "usual" happy mood and ran to give us hugs and kisses. We continued to watch this awful thing on TV. Shortly there after the 2nd tower fell. My husband looked at me and asked, "What just happened? What did I just see?" I sadly said, "It's gone......" My husband sat in shock. His face looked grim, sad and angry. I held our son so tight and cried. I thought to myself, "What about all the families who just lost loved ones? They just lost their mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, aunts, uncles etc etc..." I woke my Wife who works for a foreign news agency to tell her a plane had crashed into the WTC. When the second plane hit, my Wife threw on clothes and hit the road, and I knew I wouldn't see her for days. I watched the news reports until it was time to wake my son. I put on cartoons for him so he wouldn't be watching whatever might happen next on the tv screen. My Wife called to tell me that they had hit the Pentagon and that there were preliminary reports that Camp David had been hit (which turned out to be the plane that crashed in PA). For the first time, my hair stood up on end as I realized we were under a full fledged attack. I turned on the TV in the bedroom just as the first on the towers fell. I told my son that "some very bad people had attacked the country" and I told him he was safe as I tried to convince myself. The children at school were so upset. The younger ones were talking animatedly about the explosions caused by planes hitting the buildings and the older ones were trying to deal with the enormity of what was happening. The adults were equally as shocked and afraid as we tried to be there for the children. I turned on Howard Stern. The radio station was still playing the live feed from New York. It was comforting that in the midst of the attacks that Howard was still on the air giving reports as to what was happening and it was as close to New York as I could get. I didn't break down until I was almost at work, thinking about all those people who must have died when the towers fell. At that time the estimates were that tens of thousands might be dead and I kept thinking that was like a small city being wiped out. I worked on the Jersey City Waterfront, and had a fabulous view of the Trade Center from my desk. Normally, I took the Holland tunnel home from work in the morning, passing right by the Trade Center on my way to the Brooklyn Bridge. Fortunately that day, September 11th, there was a divine intervention of fate. My friend John asked if I would take the long way home (through Staten Island), because he didn?t have a ride. I was glad to help, not knowing that may have changed both of our fates. Normally John took the Path train to the WTC stop to change trains, but that day we headed out together. I can still smell the salty sea air of that morning, and how the sun nearly blinding as it peaked out past the two powerful structures. It was I site I had grown very accustom to seeing in the morning after a long shift. We got in the car and stated on our way home. It was a quick ride. I had dropped John at his house and continued on my way home. I was exiting the highway, talking on my friend Kiki when I heard the DJ on Z100 announce that there had been a plane crash into the Trade Center. I told Kiki to put on the news, and to call her mother, a New York City Police Officer, to see if we could get additional information. I knew at that moment that this was not an accident, as memories of the 1993 truck bombing flooded my head. I began to panic. I stated called all of my family members to make sure they were all accounted for, most importantly my sister Kim who was on her way to work at a building right next to the Towers. I had reached her on her cell phone, frantically she described that she had witnessed the first plane hit, and that her husband Brian had quick-wittingly turned the car around to get back home. They made it just in time, as the Brooklyn Bridge had just been shut down to all passenger traffic. I walked in my door, turned on the TV, and woke my other sister Jenene from her sound sleep. I then called my friend Laurie and her fianc? Brian, to inform them of the tragic event that had unfolded during their slumber. They had just recently moved from New York and were now living in Las Vegas. We all sat in shock as we witnessed the second plane hit on live TV news. So I sat, phone in hand in amazement as the towers stood ablaze. Starring, tears poring from my face as they came crumbling down. The hours and days to follow would all seem like one big mesh of sadness, shock and disbelief! The thoughts that ran through my mind were endless, What if I had not driven John home that day? Would I have been at the Trade Center as the first plane hit? Would John have been changing trains as the Towers collapsed? I think in some strange way, we saved each other that day. When a returned to work a few days later, I was greeted with a great big hug. John had had the same thoughts, and we came to the conclusion that someone had been looking out for us that day. The morning came and I headed out the door at the end of my shift. Outside of my building I remember the glare of the sun, shinning brighter then ever before. The Towers no longer there to shade it, I stood, looking at the blank space in the skyline. I was overwhelmed with sadness. Until I realized that the sun was shinning on all the rescue workers who had been using our building as a command center and rest area. It was at that moment that I realized; NO MATTER HOW BAD THINGS ARE?.WE ALWAYS HAVE EATH OTHER! We are a country that stands by our brothers and sisters! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My name is Stephanie White, I am 24 years old, and I am from Idaho. I've lived in Coeur d'Alene and Lewiston Idaho all of my life. I spent the last 4 years in New York City. I left on October 31st 2001. I had always wanted to see the bright lights of New York City. I never dreamed that one day I would actually get to see them. On September 9th 2001 I was getting ready to go out with some friends to a "Puddle Of Mudd" concert at the Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan. I had no cares in the world that night, as I went out with my friends and had a good time. I would have never thought that with in the next day my entire world would be turned upside down, into a mass confusion of chaos and fear. Now, almost 2 years later, I still am a confused ball of emotions. I have so many different thoughts about it, and yet I don't know what to say exactly. Still, I have bad dreams, and sometimes get into a deep depression, as I think about all of the people that lost someone. I feel like I should have died to. I felt guilty that I was not there, or in the city that morning. I felt lucky that I did not loose anyone I loved. I watched the twin towers burn and fall to the ground from my sixth floor bedroom apartment window. I was shaken awake that morning by my boyfriend, who said "Look the trade center is on fire". I, half awake, looked out my bedroom window, in the direction of the world trade center, only to see one tower completely engulfed in black smoke. My first thought was, that someone had flown way to close to the towers and smashed into it, I never thought for a second that by the end of the day, I would never see those towers again. As I turned on my T.v. to see what was going on, my stomach turned upside down, when I heard that the pentagon was on fire as well. When I walked over to my window and looked out, that's when I seen the second plane smash into the other tower and erupt in a huge fireball. I stood in shock, my hand over my mouth, as I realized I had screamed "NO! OH MY GOD!" I stood in complete shock, as I watched the fire burn. I rushed to the phone desperately trying to call my family to let them know that I was ok, and that I was not in Manhattan, that I was in Queens. (Astoria, Queens New York) The phones were all busy. I got in touch with my family through out the day. My boyfriends cousin Roxi, worked on Wall Street. I worried about where she was, and if she was trapped, or dead. Finally Roxi called and said she was on her way home. That's when I turned back to the T.v. and watched the news. Soon they were showing over and over the same shot of the airplane smashing into the tower. Each time it got more surreal. Once again I went back to my window, as I watched the smoke, I began to see what I thought were pieces of the building and the plane falling off of the towers, which I could not see very well, ...... only to realize it was people jumping and falling to their deaths. I never thought for a second that those towers would ever fall. It never crossed my mind. I was sitting and watching the news, as I hear more and more about what was happening, I started to realize this was an attack. This was no accident. As I stared at the T.v. in shock, I heard a reporter on the T.v. scream "oh my god! Run!" and as I was looking at the T.v., I seen the first tower start to crumble. I ran to my bedroom window and watched as it collapsed, smoke rising into the sky. I was completely stunned, I couldn't think, I couldn't comprend what had just happened. I looked over to my boyfriend and said, "Did that really just happen? Did the tower really fall?" and he replied, "I don't know" I watched the second tower fall to the ground and I watched as the dust settled and tried to remember where they stood, and what they looked like. I was (and still am) a confused mess of emotions. I went from being stunned and shocked, and not sure if I was dreaming, to crying and being sad and angry, to being numb. I couldn't eat and I couldn't sleep. I would have nightmares. I couldn't watch the news without crying. I withdrew from my boyfriend, friends and family. As I watched the news, seeing the destruction and the people covered in dust and the sounds of the sirens and the silence that settled over the city as the dust began to settle, I thought to myself my life would never be the same. I went to try to donate blood, but was turned down, because the hospital was full. The hospital told us to come back in a few days. On the September 16th 2001 I went to Union Square with my best friend, and we each lit a candle and prayed. People had chalk and wrote the names of the missing loved ones on the ground. There was a wall with hundreds of pictures of people who were still missing. There was a shrine with thousands of candles, incents, pictures, paintings and letters, even a box with someone's shoes, who was still missing. All over Times Square they had American flags. The city was silent. I was amazed at how the city came together on that horrible day. I still feel sad and angry and shocked. Whenever I see a picture of the twin towers, I just want to cry, as all the images I had seen that day, replays through my mind. When people talk like it was nothing, or it did not affect their lives, I feel hurt and angry with them. My world changed on September 11th 2001 and so did yours. You may not think that an event that happened in another town, city, state or even country could possible effect you. But mark my words; it will affect you in one-way or another. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. All people are connected in one way or another. We all will suffer when a place that is considered to be a free and liberal is smashed by oppressive forces. As the body count, piles up and the dust settles we are only beginning to realize the scope of the damage inflicted upon us. Besides the obvious: hundred of thousands of lives lost, and hundreds of billions of dollars lost, and two amazing buildings lost and our lives permanently disrupted, this terrorist attack will have an impact on the psyche of the free world unlike anything we have ever seen in our life time. This was not just an attack on some buildings. It was an attack on our way of life. It is an attack on the symbols of our freedom. When a few madmen can shake up a nation to the point where people are scared to live their lives, we know that we are in great danger. We have all felt that the good ol' USA was immune to terrorist acts of this scale. How wrong were we?............... I just hope that something good will come out of the countless lives lost and disrupted, and that we all can learn something from this massive scale catastrophe. The fact that our enemy is invisible, and is hiding in the shadows, waiting to strike, they are patient, suicidal warriors trained in terror and will stop at nothing to inflict fear and sickness into our lives. They want us to be scared and to change the way we live. They want us to cower in the corner, afraid of living life they way we are used to. I haven't turned on the tv or the the radio so i didn't really knew what happened. I arrived at school and everything was same as usual. After noon parents were calling their kids home and it was getting weird.Well after lunch half of the kids were gone,some teachers came back from lunch crying.The whole day at school we spent the time talking about what had just happened.People were worried that the plane hijackers might attack Chicago, i was upset about that. After school I rushed home and turned on the tv, i turned on the tv.I saw every thing!I felt sorrie for all those people who worked in the WTC.Those People who risked their lives for others should be rememberd forever.That night my parents camehome and was frightened oithey talked and talked and talked.weeks passed by and america was totally changed, there was alot more love and sadness for all those people.at school we had a lot of projects about 9-11.I heard thatpeople were treating arabic people bad just beacuse the hijakers were Afganistan.Everone was always talking about Osama BinhLaden. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I started my day just as I had always. I went to my first hour and then to my second. I went to my third hour, and the TV was on, and my teacher, Mr. Barry, told me that the WTC were hit by air planes. I sat down in my seat and watched in horror. I thought that the world was going to be over as I knew it just then. I was pretty much in shock. Numb, even. We sat and talked about what happened, and watched the TV. I decided that I didn't feel safe in school, so I called my mother and had her pick me up. As I walked through the halls, there was a dead silence. I have never been to my school in the middle of the day while everyone was there and it was so quiet. By then, obviously, evreyone had sadly heard the news. All you heard was either a phone ring, or the echo of the same station on every TV in the school. While I was waiting for my mother, a man picked up his daughter because he was afraid that something would happen due to her ethnicity. My school is extreamly diverse. It was sad to think that a parent had to fear that. When my mom came and picked me up, we went up to our familys resturant and I was shocked to see it so full, and so quiet. Everyone was just sitting there watching. They couldn't even eat, just sit and cry. Then I went to get something for my mom, and I was surprised as to how empty the streets were. I don't even think that I slept that night. I could hear the military jets and planes going over my house. And I think I heard them flying every night for a few months. I was so scared that something was going to happen while I was sleeping. I had nightmares, that were almost so real I could feel the dear of the other people around me in my dream. The one that sticks out the most would be whn I was in an airplane, and the hijackers had moved us all to the back of the plane, and they made all the parents give their kids to them, and they killed them, while their helpless parents watched. And then we were flying towards the ground. And I felt the plane hit and I felt this feeling that I had just died. The dream was to realistic for me. My mom and dad and I decided to help those who lost their lives and of those of the dead by collecting money and sending it in. Then, we put 3 American Flags outside out resturand and at least 10 inside. This whole week we have put "United we will always stand" on our specials board. I just wish I could have helped out more. Everyday I think about the people who were killed and the families who have lost their loved ones. I find myself constantly looking around and I get nervous when I see people who like they are from Iraq and other foreign countries. I pray everyday to keep my family safe. A lot of people blame President Busch for what happened, I feel that this would have happened no matter who was President at the time. These people are so full of hate and they teach hate to their children. The children don't know any different they only know what they are told whether it is the truth or not. We are very lucky as Americans to have soldiers fighting for our freedom. I woke up to the radio saying that a bomb had gone off (they thought) and my husband (now ex)yelling at me to wake up and him turning the tv on to see the news and realizing that a plane had hit the towers and that it wasn't a bomb. I received a phone call from my employee and she said that a plane just hit the World Trade Center. I just figured it had to have been a mistake. I phoned my father and heard him say "oh No" as the second plane hit. I can never begin to understand how the people of NYC must feel.
