There are some historical inaccuracies, but I wrote what I knew to be happening at the moment.) 9-11-01 10:15 The south tower of the world trade center just collapsed. About an hour ago, the United States was attacked in a horrific fashion. I sit here now, as I have been for the last 1 1/2 hours, watching chaos and terror unfold in my country. I am so confused with emotion--I am scared, panicked. My parents are not far from the Pentagon attack and two of the planes that were said to be hijacked and used for these terrorist attacks left from Boston. This is too close, too close. Thousands of people surely have perished thus far. President Bush, only a short while ago, said, ?Terrorism won?t stand.? I beg to differ with Mr. President. Terrorism stands tall and proud this day. 10:23 The north tower is now leaning. It may join its sister. I pray for those inside and those on the streets. Firefighters and civilians must be the majority in jeopardy. The FAA has grounded every aircraft in the nation. There is more information about the planes: The first plane out of Boston was American flight #11 with 90 passengers and crew. The plane out of Dulles had 60 passengers and crew. A car bomb has exploded outside of the state department. There is so much news flying around--it?s hard to keep up. I am trying to stay calm. God, please help us, please God. Why? Why is this happening? Is this a message or punishment to us? It is not known at this time if it is related to the others. It?s surreal to know that as I watch this calamity unfold, we will know much more about it later. I have a front row seat with the news, but I write this at a time when there is no information....Why? Who? What is the damage, the casualties? 10,000? More? It strikes me that technology has not helped us in this tragedy. The ?professionals? with knowledge in terrorism anticipated biological and chemical warfare, bombings, ?sophisticated means of terrorism.? Planes? crashing into buildings was something that could have been done without all of the recent technological advances. Yet we still couldn?t stop this. Some very, very careful calculation and cooperation between terrorist groups must have made this a reality. 1:30 My heart is pounding. I heard a large roar from the sky--there are only 50 planes in the entire nation that are supposed to still be in the air! The roar of a jet was coming from the east and seemed to be traveling southwest. Even though I couldn?t see it, it was so loud that it shook me. I thought for sure another jet was headed for the ground! When my brain finally kicked into gear I realized that it must have been a fighter jet coming from Pease Air Force Base. There have been many references on the news to ?Lock Downs?....that many areas are in ?lock down.? I?m not sure what that means but it must have something to do with a high level of security. There is talk about closing our borders. I believe that my brother might still be on tour, abroad. I can?t get through to my mother--all the circuits are busy. Senator Joe Biden is insisting that folks should go about their business, to stop doing so would be giving in to terrorism. The Senator is begging everyone to calm down. ?Too strong, too powerful? he says we are to let this horrific ordeal break us apart. Would the family members of those dead agree with him? I feel anything but calm right now and I?m 250 miles away from any devastation. I just want to hold my kids. The phone company has made a plea on television that people limit their calls to New York and DC. This must be why I can?t get through to Mom. The way our state, so removed from the tragedy (in a logistical sense), is closing down is reminiscent of after the Challenger disaster. When I drove home from work the evening of the explosion, it seemed that New Hampshire was asleep. It was so quiet and the roads were deserted. Solemn. Everyone was at home waiting for more news, hoping against hope that by some miracle, there would be survivors of the explosion. People needed to be home to hold their kids and spouses. The same holds true today in NH, but perhaps not in such an intimate sense as when we lost Christa McAulliffe. 2:10 I am waiting at the bus stop for my children. It will be a relief to have them home. I hear woodcutters across the street in the forest running their monstrous, noisy machines. It?s the only hint of life around here. They go about their business as the nation is in a full-blown security alert. I wonder if they know what has happened today in our country? Do they know that the world has stopped spinning? It doesn?t seem right. 3:05 It?s just been reported that one of the pilots of Flight 11 was from Portsmouth, NH. Tom McGuiness. This act of terror is far-reaching. It strikes me that no matter how often or to who the question is posed, ?What are the casualties??, no one can bear to even speculate an answer. The enormity of the destruction can?t even be imagined at this point. It?s too raw to presume the number of dead. Several thousand, no doubt. The dust has not even settled. It will probably be weeks before a number is confirmed. As people are expected home tonight, tomorrow, and the next day-- and they don?t come-- the death toll will steadily rise. Oh God, please watch over the children who wait for their parents to come home tonight. I can?t bear to think of their fear and pain. The precision at which the 3 out of 4 planes hit their targets was too exact. I wonder if that means the terrorist pilots who may have taken over the controls were highly trained. They hit their targets with dead-on-balls-accuracy. What will we learn about these bastards who are so heartless and hate-ridden? Who could harbor so much spite and rage against this country to execute such a violent crime? Only time will tell. I?ll wait diligently with the rest of the country for the story to unfold. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001, I was in Sioux Center, Iowa, experiencing my sophomore year of college. My home is actually Worthington, Minnesota. My first class on Tuesdays was at 1:35 pm (2:35pm ET). I woke up at about 12:30 pm (1:30 pm ET) or so. I didn't turn on a TV or anything and had NO IDEA what had happened earlier that day. As I walked to class, I saw several students gathered around the flag pole praying. The flag was at half-mast. I figured someone important had probably died or it was a rememberance day that I wasn't aware of. Didn't think much more of it. I continued on into class like nothing was wrong. My professor began class with mentioning something about "a dark day in our nation's history." I leaned over to the guy next to me and asked him what the professor was talking about. The guy laughed at me and said I was dumb for not knowing. In fact, no one around me would tell me what was going on. So I actually just raised my hand and asked! It was shocking to hear that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. But that's all I was told at that point. It wasn't until later that night that I and everyone else in the Midwest actually learned exactly what had happened. Between teaching and attending classes all day, no one in the classroom had caught on to the fact that a plane hittng the World Trade Center wasn't the whole story. In fact both towers had been leveled, another plane had crashed into the Pentagon, a fourth plane had crashed in Pennsylvania, the Whitehouse, United Nations building, and the Capitol building had all been evacuated, the Navy had dispatched three aircraft carriers to defend the East Coast, F-16's were circling over New York and Washington, all air traffic had been grounded, and approximately 3,000 people had been killed in America. Things like that are hard to imagine in Minnesota. Things like that don't happen here. Nine years ago, New Yorkers experienced the first bombing of the World Trade Center. Minnesota and the surrounding areas are not targets for this kind of thing therefore we've never seen or experienced such things (they're probably left out because there are more people in New York City alone than in all of Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Nebraska combined!). I didn't know anyone on a plane that day. I have never been to New York. I don't know anyone there. Until now that is. Since that disaster I've been reading about the people that died, where they were from, the job that they had, and other things about them. The only thing that was different about them from myself was that they happened to have a job in one of the tallest buildings in the world in one of the biggest cities in the world. Like I said, on Sept. 11, I didn't know anyone in New York. After that date, I feel like I know the people that died. It's strange to feel such grief for people that you've never met. I guess in closing my story, I just want to express condolances to the people of New York, Washington, Pennsylvania, but also to those in Oklahoma City and everywhere else, including Afghanastan, Iraq, and anyone else whose lives have been ended unjustly by those who would put their false ideals above innocent lives. I believe the President was right when he said that they will go all the way to "history's unmarked grave of discarded lies." The attacks did not happen here, but in a sense they did. Just as the NATO charter says, "An attack on one, is an attack on all," so is an attack on one state an attack on them all. It came as an immediate shock and i thought to myself how could this happen. At that point i was still trying to figure out what the world trade center was because i had always called them the twin towers not the world trade center. Then i remeber trying to go on the internet and see pictures of what had really occured. When i finally saw pictures i was completely amazed at the sight that greeted my eyes. We all ran to the TV to see what had happened. As we stood dumbfounded with the horrible sight and story another plane crashed into the World Trade center. I don't remeber how much longer it was before They were reporting that the Pentagon had also been hit. All I could think of was where is my family did they go to DC today? God all the poor people there; we have patients that work in the Pentagon! Millions of thoughts ran through my head at once. The phone rang and it was my husband(Thank God!) "I want you to come home now!" he said to me he knew that hey were ordering planes down and we were only getting some of the information on a very small TV. Where I was working was near one of the main airports in Virginia. After that we kept hearing rumors... The MAll has been blown up....the White house has been evacuated. All sorts of other stories coming in on the news. We also heard about the plane in PA that had crashed (saving who knows how many others by the heroics of those on board) I drove back with my coworker who I rode with every day. She had to stop and get her son from school. At that time they weren't letting kids out on school busses due to the fear that they would be targeted. We rushed home and all of my family was there. My mother-in-law who we lived with at the time was already home she had left work when the Pentagon had been struck. The building where she worked shook form the blast. She worked five miles away from the Pentagon if that gives you any idea how bad the explosion was. All day we cried and prayed and worried about people, our families , friends our country, our lives. What would happen next? Hours turned into days and into weeks. The fires had all been put out and the hopes of any survivors had been as well. My husband nad I were shopping at the target on Jefferson-Davis Highway (RT1) going towards Crystal City when we decided to drive by the Pentagon. At this point we had only seen and heard about the distruction from TV. We couldn't get close but you could take the exit ramp and turn around on the freeway and it took you right by the side that the plane had crashed into. I rolled my window down and we stared back at the great building. The smell of the air was different it was warm and you could still smell the smoke from the crash. The giant Flag was hanging from the side of the building like a sign of freedom. Freedom that would now be different. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Between 8:30-8:46am I was on the Northern State Parkway on my way to work. It was a typical day, until I was sitting in traffic and heard the news on the radio. I thought it was some kinda sick joke, but then realized, "its probably a small plane". Well, I was wrong. When I got to work the whole office was in a state of confusion, listening to the radio, shusshing us as we walked in. Then the phone wouldnt stop ringing, anyone who new anyone was calling. I didnt know what to think, but the first thing I did was call my husband. Then I started scanning the names of people I knew in my head who could've been there. I thought of many. You see, my "extended" family, including my husband, are all in the volenteer firehouse in our town. And a few of these people are FDNY or NYPD. Thats when my heart hurt. We all gathered in one office and just listened to the radio. Then we saw the smoke....we knew it was time to go home to our families. The day continued as everyone gathered at the firehouse for stand by. "Where they gonna go?" We didnt know, we just waited and prayed they didnt. It all became real to me as we stood outside and saw 3 fighter jets fly by. Thats how I knew this was real. Turned out that everyone we knew became acounted for... except one. Terry Farrell. He worked at Rescue 4 in Queens. We waited together for word for days, weeks, and then one month turned into almost 2, and then they found him. The hurt came back so hard, it knocked me over. But, somehow, someway, there was closer. It's one year to date that we lost our friend, and the hurt comes back just as hard as it did then. We miss him terribly, and would give anything, just to have that chance to say goodbye. He leaves behind a wife and 2 children, and many, many beloved friends. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11th, 2001 is a day I will never forget in my lifetime. There were so many emotions running through me all at once. Along with all the emotions were all the thoughts and worries I had. It was the one day that for once I quit thinking about my little world and reached my mental hand out to the worlds of others whose lives were greatly affected by these events. I remember very strongly the feelings I had when I had head about the first attack on American soil since Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. It was about the end of first period when I first heard reports about attacks on the World Trade Center buildings in New York City. The news came as a complete shock to me. At the time I thought it was only rumor but as I walked into second period I watched in complete awe as the second plane collided with the structure. To say that I was in complete shock was an understatement. For once I didn?t care about anything else but my figurative neighbors. I could feel tears swelling in my eyes as though I was in the middle of it myself but I could only imagine the true terror of it all. It was then that I realized how truly blessed I was to have reassurance that my friends and family were all safe within close range of me. I could only hope that most of the families in New York City and throughout the country would have the same reassurance but I soon came to realize that my hopes had died. After watching the various CNN reports on the classroom monitors for a whole class period in shock, I had to leave the class to go to third period where I was informed that the Pentagon had been attacked also. My teacher refused to let us watch the reports and continued on with class. It came as a big disappointment to me because I had reason to believe that a friend of the family may have been injured or killed in the attack. My lunch period which was at about twenty to eleven was filled with commotion and worry. Of course I felt for the victims families but I too feared for my own. My sister had recently joined the United States Air Force before September 11th. I feared for her only because I was uncertain as to the next target of the terrorists. When I finally returned home, my father was there along with my uncle. They asked me if I had heard all of the reports in which I had pretty much. These events led to quite a few discussions on everything we take for granted. I have been fortunate enough to realize that every day is a fifty-fifty chance that I come home alive. It was way before September 11th that I realized this but such events as these were quite the reminder. I wanted to give everyone I know and love a hug and an apology for anytime I may have taken them for granted. I called my aunt to make sure that everyone was fine and there were no calls as to inform us of a casualty within the family. The response was a negative but we had had a close call. My other aunt?s husband worked within the Pentagon and was off on an errand and had been fortunate enough to escape the attack. The next day in school we had several moments of silence and pledges to the flag. It felt good to see patriotism flowing so strong. It has been way too long since there has been such a big uniting of people of all shapes, sizes, and races. I had never seen so many streaming flags standing ever so high. Such a sight gave me some hope that one day everyone in the nation will stand in unity and triumph over all obstacles. Now we continue the search for the mastermind behind all of these attacks. Our chance of finding him are slim but we no longer live in fear. We continue with our everyday lives as we once did almost a year ago. Clean up efforts in New York City have finally been completed. The last mass of metal has been removed with a flag marking the end of such trial. Though we may still grieve, we stand as one. Together, we have and continue to overcome strife and terrorism all at once. Suffering is temporary but unity is forever. We may never fully understand why someone could plot to kill innocent civilians, but we know that we can stand against such evil. The American people can overcome anything thrown in our path and we have proven this. I address this statement to any American citizen that may read this: Hatred is very strong. Please do not let it overcome you. Problems are temporary and need no violence. I have faith that we may all come together and set aside or prejudices. One day we will all be known as one. Now America's grown into a land of targets: the White Kouse, the New York Stock Exchange, nuclear power plants. As the Taliban desecrated Buddhist shrines, will they now seek to fell our sequoias, our Golden Gate and Brooklyn Bridges, the U.N., our Lady of the Harbor? Since the 1993 Twin Tower attack the USA has ostriched its stalwart self ito a sense of the almighty. We forgot, a squadron of mosquitoes can cause toxicity and death. How can we plug the matrix of Freedom's screens, now big enough to let horse flies in? When God is invoked I know it's time to hide. My flag is on display, my ears alert, yet my dreams are strafed. Fear and anger creep between morning glories, marigolds, and Mozart's notes as skies roar with F16's not heard before terrorists converted three of our planes to bombs. We cannot hide from those who have mere scraps of food and live in torn tents or shacks, whose pain and want can be honed to wrath, missiles against the wealthy. Tell us your story: At that time i was employed by an americam compagny in belgium, and it was about noon when we heard on the radio what happened, it started with the report of 1 plane flying into the wtc, the first opinions were that is was an accident, than we heard about the second, from that point on we were in schock, terrorist attacks ??? in america ?? we couldnt believe it . and again a special newsflash; "two more planes have crashed in the usa, one of them has destroyed the pentagon", from that point on all activity in the technical division (my section) stopped , and everyone was gathered around the radio, and by 4 o'clock when we went home, it was clear as glass that this was the worst thing that happened to the usa since world war2. at that time, we had a inspection from headquearters, and that man had to find out what happened trought the internet at our personnel offices, he went into shock, and had to be calmed down by a couple of employees, but the biggest problem was yet to come, getting the man in contact with his family in the states. all trans-atlantic lines where busy, finally , after about 2 hours of trying he got to speak to his family trough a private line of the us embassy. he had to remain in belgium for 2 weaks, but called his family twice a day to inform after the situation. on september 11, both the compagny and american flag were put up at the flagpost outisde the plant, one day later the security staff was doubled, and at night all gates were locked and checked every half hour; and 2 days later the flags were taken down because of threats towards the plantcoming from muslim comunities. 2 (muslim) employes were fired because of their way of thinking : on 12 september they claimed that the attacks were a good thing, they were overwhelmed with negative reactions from their collegues, and had to clarifie their words at the personal offices, and there they repeated their statement, which was sufficient for immediant termination of their contracts. when looking back on the whole situation, it still amazes me how a few sick minds, guided by a crazy man, can turn the world into chaos, and can kil thousand of people under the disguise of an "holy war". It was a picture perfect, "not a cloud in the sky" September day. A co-worker announced she had just heard on the radio that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center. Word was spreading rapidly throughout the office, some logging on to the internet to see what this could possibly be! Little did we know our lives and those of generations to come were forever changing, right then and there. The utter disbelief and helplessness was slowly seeping into our very souls. A burden to be carried forever. Questions to which there are no good answers to be asked over and over. We all convened to our conference room to watch the events unfold on television. Heads kept shaking in disbelief and tears were falling as the buildings collapsed, and with the news about the Pentagon and Pennsylvania. It was all becoming quite surreal. None of us could work. The phones stopped ringing. We closed the office early and went home. Thankfully, none of us were touched in any direct way by loss of a loved one. But as the days passed, stories unfolded of friends of friends, and so on. The investment firm Morgan Stanley Dean Witter has an office in our building. We learned of their loss. I remember I was glued to my TV for days! Not wanting to watch, but driven to learn as much as I could, and to feel it. The pain had to be felt. The tears had to be shed for a bit. It's the only way to get past it and move on. We were all watching the smoke continue to rise from Ground Zero -as it was now called- for weeks. I was feeling secretly guilty for not being there to help sift through the rubble. Wanting to reach out my hand and my heart to all the police and firefighters and all those looking for signs of life, and eventually just hoping to find a body or a piece of one to return to loved ones for proper burial. They were enduring unbearable conditions and extreme emotional pain. But I wished I were one of them. I don't think that the perpetrators of these acts had any idea how strong this country would come together. They don't have a clue as to what this country is all about. I would endure any amount of hardship to show them they can't put us down! Most people I know were glued to their TVs,radios, and newspapers too. We couldn't get enough because we were trying to understand. The airwaves were full of talk for weeks, months. There wasn't a radio talk show in the country that didn't cover this day in and day out. I began imagining so many horrors and started feeling a little paranoid. It was hard to sleep sometimes. But eventually, perhaps as each "uneventful" day passed, I began to worry less. I also decided not to worry about those things over which I have absolutely no control. What will be will be. I remember also that I was so sorry my 82 year old mother had to live through this. I was sorry that she would have to live with this sadness for the rest of her life. That she would have to imagine a world that wasn't safe for her grand children and great grand children. It wasn't fair for her to have to be so disheartened. So we all know the rest of the story. It's ongoing. A story to which we all fantasize about a happy ending. So we go on. We keep our routines. We go to work. We go on vacation. We buy a home. We struggle to keep the economy strong. We support our President and pray for him to be a wise leader. We keep on smiling, decide what is really important in our lives and just go live them. BELIEVE in the power of prayer! God bless us all. Then i got up to go to school that morning to find my family all watching the tv. My mum just turned to me and said "trade towers.....gone" i was just like ....what?? and then i watched all the coverage on the television, and remember being shocked and feeling as if i was still dreaming. My mum was crying and i started crying, even though i dont know any of the people who were victims i was still so shocked and disturbed by what happened. I went to school and it was strange. It was very quiet, everyone was just distraught. All we did was watch the coverage of what had happened. We had 2 minutes silence some time during the day and it was just so strange because knew what to say to eachother. Almost everyone was crying and we planned to hold a service. I was asked to write a song. So i went home and wrote a song about new york and these poor people who fell victim to these unbelievable attacks. Here is what i wrote: CITY UNDER SIEGE: an axis of the world brought to its bloody knees as bodies rain down, the streets of new york city. A man on a highjacked plane rang his wife and said: "honey in case i dont see you again, i love you....i love you". I usually get up at 6 a.m. to get ready for work. Instead, I awoke about 5:30 and couldn't get rid of the nagging feeling that I had to get up-NOW! So, I did. I stumbled to the kitchen, nuked a cup of coffee and sat down to read my email. Minutes into it, my sister IM'd me (she doesn't get up til 7! Noon on weekends!), "OMG, I can't believe what is happening. A horrible accident! Are you watching TV?" I turned the tv on just in time to see the second plane hit the second tower. Horrified, I sat on my sofa for the next two days. I believe I ate during that time, not sure. But I was transfixed and unable to move. I did have an overwhelming urge to gather my kids and grands around me, though. I am blessed to work for a company that cares. And what I've learned over the last twelve months is how very blessed I am in every way. The struggles of the last few years, my normal life, is suddenly a very contented place. The day is now referred to as one of the most tragic days, also known as 9/11. The day when the Twin Towers went down and thousands of people died. When I first heard the news, I was sitting in third period gym and was talking to my friend Nicole. We were having our pictures taken for the yearbook and our identification cards. All of the sudden we heard over the loud speaker that an airplane had crashed into one of the world trade centers. We were told that there is nothing to worry about and that we were perfectly safe. About five minutes later I was called to the office. As I walked down the hallway to the office I noticed my mom was standing out side the office door. She said that she was scared and did not know what to do. She also said that she had known clue what was going on and that she wanted me out of school for the day. So we went to my dad?s store were we saw on the news that another plane had crashed into the other tower. Then suddenly we witnessed the towers crumble completely to the ground. There was nothing left to them. My mom then said, ? This is a day that none of us will ever forget.? After that my mom and I went to go and get my aunt and my cousins from their house in Belvidere. We went to get them and my aunt was really scared because her boyfriend was working right across the street from the World Trade Center. My friend was also working there. So we went back to my house and we were watching the news. We were trying to call them on there cell phones and we could not get through because to many people were trying to call out on cell phones at one time and a lot of phones would not work. We finally heard from them at around one in the morning the next day. They said that their phones wouldn?t dial out and that they were okay. That was my tragic day of 9/11. It was a horrible day that I will never forget. Thousands of people died that day. My family was lucky but many others were not so lucky. I remember looking at the t.v., and some stated that a second airplane had struck the south tower. I felt so numb. Our manager instructed us to go home. I remember walking to my vehicle and tunning in to a radio station to hear the news. As I drove home I recall getting choked up not knowing if my sister was as work. I remember hearing a song by Jeff Majors titled Psalm 23. That song gave me hope and strength to go on. I finally pulled into my driveway, I went upstairs and turned on my television. I remember as if it were yesterday, the buildings collapsed, and I feel to my knees in tears thinking the worst had happened to Letty. I cried so much. I continued to call NY in hopes that I could make contact with someone to find out about Letty but I had no luck. My husband arrived home with the boys. He went to the school and picked them up, not knowing where the next attacks might strike. I was glued to the t.v., as were millions of people. My husband continued to reassure me that Letty was fine, but I had to speak to her in order to know that she was safe. Finally around 7:30 p.m., I was able to reach her home number. Anthony answered the phone and I asked him was Letty fine. He said yes, I recall tears running down my face, and when I heard her voice, I was so overwhelmed with joy and sadness at the same time. She cryed and told me her horrific experience. Thank God, Emily made mommy late for work. My sister had dropped Emily off at school and realized that she had forgotten her lunch bag, so she went home to get the lunch bag, take it to Emily's school, and then she caught the ferry over to work. As she arrived she was headed towards her job, when all of a sudden she saw one airplane in the north tower and the other one was coming. She recalls some gentleman grabbing her hand and running for dear life, she said it was dark, and debris falling all over. Letty is an asthmatic, so she was trying to the best she could. She said she lost her shoes in the run for her life, and received a few cuts and bruises. She was taken to a decontamination area, luckily her boss was there and hugged her and was happy to see her. Unfortunately, my sister had the emergency contact list at home and her manager asked her if she would call the names on the list to see if family members had heard from their love ones. I am one of the lucky ones who still has my best friend and sister with me today. My sympathy goes out to all those people who were not as fortunate as I am. When Letty hears a plane now she panics and has horrible visions of that day. The tragedy will forever be with her. Hopefully within time she will try to deal with this tragedy the best way possible. I even remember what outfit I wore because it was brand new and I was so excited to wear it school that day. I was eleven years old and in sixth grade at Poe Middle School. Everything started out a normal day. But by my second class, a lot of people were getting picked up early from school and everyine was so confused because we had no idea what was going on. None of the teachers were telling anyone anything. I knew something had to be up right before lunch because I was supposed to go to uncle's house after school but I got called down to the main office where they said my mom had called and wanted me to come straight home at the end of the day. When I asked the woman in the main office if my mom gave a reason, she just said, "Well there has been some accidents in New York and that may have something to do with it." Now I was more confused than ever because when she said "accidents," the first thing that popped in my head was car accidents and I was so confused as to what car accidents in New York had to do with me and why it was important. When I got home from school that day, still not knowing anything about what had happened, I noticed my mom's car in the driveway which was strange because normally she wasn'y home from work until around five. She opened the door when she saw me coming up the porch and I noticed her face looked kind of red, like she'd been crying. I barely asked, "What's going on?" before she led me in the house and to the TV, which was repeating for the millionth time that day what had happened. I was in complete shock. Now, five years later, I can't say my life has been seriously affected by what happened that day. But there have been some changes. Ever since I've been a lot more interested in the news and national and international affairs. I've been a lot more politically inclined as well. But one of the most noticeable changes is security. Now when I go into DC, there are security checks before entering museums, creating long lines. And just this past summer, when I was visiting my grandmother in Florida, at the airport I had to take off my shoes, necklace, watch, bracelets, and before I could go through the metal detector. However, one thing I stand strong to about September 11 is this: it should not keep people from living their lives to the fullest. It should not be an excuse from the government to take away American's liberties. And it should not be exploited by the media. Of course, all these things have happened anyway, and THAT is what I find the saddest. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I woke up at 7:30 in the morning to attend a math class at college. Since I lived in the dormitory, I just walked over to the classroom. By the time the first attack hit, I was still in class. After class, I went to bed for a nap, setting the alarm for 10:15. When I woke up after the nap, I got my rollerblades and books together to go to an off-campus class. To this point, I did not turn on the tv or radio. I got to the bottom floor of the building, and went into the college bookstore. The BookStore radio had Howard Stern on and they were going to a live report that the Trade Center was hit. I said aloud and thought that it was a cleverly disguised hoax, since I just studied "The War Of The Worlds" hoax in one of my classes. I purchased a sports drink and started to skate toward the off-campus class. There was no panic in the streets that I noticed, and I had to dodge the usual cars. I arrived at 10:55, took off my skates and went inside. I waited in the lobby, and the secretary said "Did you hear what happened?" I said "You're listening to Howard Stern, aren't you?" "No..I'm listening to KQV" First thought was, "Oh my God..it isn't a hoax!" A sign was then posted saying "Class Cancelled. Return to Campus for Further Instructions." I stayed there about half an hour to make sure the other classmates heard about it. Tim, my classmate, rolled up on a scooter, and I said "Class has been canned. Have you heard what happened?" "Yeah. They say there's a plane in Pittsburgh too." I thought again, "Oh my God" and took off quickly for the campus. This time there was more of a sense of panic and confusion in the street. And at every stop, I asked someone, "Hey, can you turn up your radio? What is the latest news?" and other phrases. I don't remember even taking my skates off when I got back. I went to the dorm room and immediately tried to call my mom and dad. It took me a while to get through. When I did, they said they were just closing the store and I went online to try and contact other family members and other friends. I was very frightened, crying, and I wanted to go home. I was then told that if we wanted to get out of the city, I could go home with one of the professors. I decided to stay in the city, and I just remember being glued to the computer, updating news sites, watching news channels, I just stayed up all night long watching the news. The next time I slept was about 3:00 in the morning.
