I had no idea of what was going on at that moment I only knew that a plane had crashed and hit one of the towers. I could tell that my teachers were worried and did not know what to do. It seemed like that was the longest day of my life. My friends and I talked about it and we did not know what to think. When I finally got home I found my family glued to the T.V watching the news and I soon found myself doing the same thing. I was confused because it seemed like something I would see in a movie, but this was real. This has changed my life because now I do not take anything for granted. I am happy and thankful for all the people I have around me that care about me. This is something that cannot be compared to anything else in history and I will remember this for the rest of my life. They were broadcasting live radio in Wal-Mart. The few people I did see were crying. Nobody talked. It was really spooky and I was so scared! How can I shop for groceries at a time like this!? I wondered if I would see my children return from school that day. Maybe the same thing would happen all over the country. I was 8 months pregnant. The second plane hit a few seconds later. I couldn't believe my eyes. My cousin was histarical. We are about 25 minutes from Somerset County where the hijacked plane went down. It was a reality check. Life is too short. We Americans feel that we are unstopable because we are the highest leading nation. And that day we were stopped. Tell us your story: i was in my 6th grade math class when we were told about the attacks. i was more upset casue this was gonna mess up our recess and i wanted to play wall ball. but when they described how horrible it actually was i worried. we all worried a lot of the kids had parents that work at the pentagon. my frined's mom worked at the day care at the pentagon. she was flipping out. the priest came in and we prayed the rosary a few times. slowly kids were being pulled out of class. my mom came to get me and my friend sammy. cause her mom worked in prince william county so she couldn't come and get her. somy mom was like "i don't care if she isn't my child i am taking her where she feels safe and that's with my daughter at our house." we had a picnic. I had the television on, but wasn't in the room to watch it. I was in the next room when I received a call from my mother telling me that the first plane had hit one of the towers. I immediately ran into the other room where the tv was and turned on the sound. Just as I did, they showed the second plane hitting the second tower. I just stared at the television in awe. I was stunned that something like this was happening. I watched it for a litte long and decided to leave for work. On the way to work I had the car radio on and was hearing that The the pentagon had too be hit. I just remember praying that people would be okay. I made it to work a little late. As I entered the pharmacy where I work my boss was setting up the television. We watched the televison from about 10am on. We weren't busy because people were at home with their families. Where they should be. I remember the silence as we watched the drama unfold before our eyes. When we go word that they were searching for the 4th plane. One of my fellow coworkers started to worry. Two of her 3 children is stationed in Norfolk. She wondered whether the plane was going there or not. About 2 hours later is when we heard that officials had found wreckege of the plane in Penn. All those lives lost. We would soon find out that the people aboard the plane were heros..They all are. The day was pretty much spent in awe and being stunned. I don't remember even driving home. I do however remember sitting down in front of my computer and typing out a poem. I do not have a creative bone in my body. But for some reason it felt appropiate. I still don't know what to title it as. I just can not find one that seems to fit it. We were off the grid, so our only lifeline was a Radio and the Los Angeles station we were able to recept. I was enjoying the beautiful sunshine and Ocean breeze while watering the garden, when my husband came running over to me holding our tiny radio. Honey, listen to this ! I stopped and listened in silence and the news came across that two planes had crashed into the world trade center. Then the pentagon and yet another into a field in PA. I never felt so far away from anything in my life. I felt like I was on the moon. We were so Isolated and alone and we needed to go home. For the next several days we tried many times to get ahold of relatives in the U.S. The phone lines could not get through. We drove to Ensenada to call, several days in a row. We finally packed everything we could fit into our Van and headed for the border of Mexico and Calif. We waited in Line for 20 hours at the border to get across. We drove to my Mothers House in Oxnard, California and have stayed in the area ever since. We are Americans and it is very clear where we belong. We had to start all over and it has been a difficult time, but nothing like those who had to face 9-11-01 head on. God Bless the United States and all of those who suffered and endured. The next morning was like any other. She was playing on the living room floor as I laid on the couch, 10 weeks pregnant, watching Good Morning America. I just turned on the TV before the first plane hit. It was so horrific! I had a sinking feeling in my stomach and called my mother. I told her to turn on the TV and asked her if she thought it was intentional. She was still asleep and I don't think she realized what I had said. It made me feel better to hear her voice but the miles between us seemed greater. I felt the need to be with my parents to make sure they were OK. I called my husband at Chili's. I desparetly wished he was at home with me. I told him to go turn on the bar TV and that I loved him very much. I hung up the phone and just stood in my living room, in horror, watching the North Tower burn. I kept thinking of all the families of the people in that building. When I saw the second plane hit the South Tower, I fell on the floor and started crying. At that instant, I knew for sure we were going to war. I knew there were horrible people in this world!!! My little girl was still playing on the floor and I felt like her freedom was taken away in that moment in time. I couldn't control my emotion. I called my mom and my husband again in tears. I couldn't get my eyes away from the TV. All day, I cried for the people in the buildings, on the planes, at the Pentagon, for all the families affected and for my babies. My freedom was violated. My baby's future was forever changed. I was afraid for my unborn child as well. What a horrific day. I'll never forget it. Now, I know what the flag means. I know how lucky I and my children are for being born in this country. We are all one people...AMERICANS! One year later....I still haven't forgotten. Louis who told me about the plane that hit the World Trade center. I thought that it was an accident, LIke the time that a B-25 hit the Empire state building. When I got downstairs I heard the rest of the story. The trade show was dead, Everyone gathered in the lobby to watch a big screen TV. The next day there was a big linup at the hall to give blood and we closed the show.Most of the guys rented two vans and drove back to Rochester, NY since all flights were cancelled. Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001 -- Union City, NJ Many of us who live in the New York City metropolitan area ourselves work, or have friends or loved ones who work in downtown Manhattan, the scene of Tuesday's horrifying attack on the World Trade Center. Undoubtedly, some of us are grieving the loss of someone we knew personally. Collectively, we mourn for the thousands of individuals, honest working people like ourselves, who just a few miles away suffered an unspeakable horror at the hands of an enemy we can barely comprehend. Our hearts are deeply broken at this senseless and overwhelming loss of life. The words and faces of the countless family and friends whose lives have been so suddenly and tragically violated will haunt our thoughts for weeks and months to come. For many years the Manhattan skyline has been the glistening landscape of my own back yard, the awe-inspiring, ever-vibrant Emerald City of the Hudson. In 1977, while living on West Houston Street in Greenwich Village where my small apartment boasted an unobstructed view of the top third of the shiny new World Trade Towers, I witnessed a tiny black speck moving slowly up the northeast corner Tower One that proved to be George Willig, the "human fly" who scaled the full 110 stories to the top, eclipsing the infamous tightrope walk by Phillippe Petit three years earlier. For the past fourteen years, from my high-rise apartment atop New Jersey's Palisades, I have derived great pleasure from the breathtaking power of these man-made wonders, often racing for my camera at the crack of dawn, or at that magical twilight hour when the golden sunset flashes on the tall glass structures like glittering jewelry as the stars begin to dance against a deepening blue sky. Tonight, in the place where the great Towers once stood is a ghostly white corona, a colossal cloud of dust and smoke eerily illuminated by the floodlights guiding the rescue crews for whom tonight, again, there will be no sleep. The following was written by me on September 11, 2001, at 11:45pm. I took photographs of the scene from my balcony, which you may view by clicking here. It was utterly surreal this morning to be standing on my terrace in Union City, NJ, watching the beautiful Twin Towers I'd admired from this vantage point for 14 years, now topped in strangling black clouds of smoke and wisps of vivid flame. I stood numbed in disbelief when suddenly, the long sliver of the south Tower I could just see behind the north began to spew a cascade of filmy gray matter, like a dark waterfall, from its sky-high pinnacle down towards the ground. It was difficult to immediately discern what it was I had just seen through the smokey shroud, but when I next noticed monstrous clouds of thick, rolling white powder rising 50 stories up from the ground around the cluster of downtown buildings, tumbling and rippling wide into a half-mile radius around the site of the Trade Center and spilling deep out into the harbor -- I knew something doubly disastrous had happened. I dashed into my living room to see what the TV news was reporting, and learned that the south Tower had in fact completely collapsed. Reeling from the shock of this, weeping in horror for the thousands of people obviously lost, both in the tower and on the ground, slowly trying to grasp that the endangered north Tower had finally lost its twin, and contemplating what a sad and devastating reminder it will be to see the lone Tower standing where this double monument had stood for nearly 30 years, sentinel to the world's most magnificent skyline -- I was physically shaken when suddenly the remaining north Tower started to drop, like a vertical accordion, straight down in a wobbly but steady descent, in a liquid-like halo of dark dust, literally sinking out of sight from the New York City landscape. The empty space in my familiar view will forever sting as a sad reminder of the innocent lives horribly taken, the heroism of the rescue crews victimized at the scene, and the deep loss felt by the friends and family of those fellow Americans we lost on this tragic 11th day of September, 2001. I answered reluctantly expecting it to be the hospital asking me to come into work. To my surprise it was my sister with the terrible news. Her words were "we are being attacked, turn on your tv". I scrambled for the remote and could not believe the images that I was seeing. I immediately went and got my 9 month old daughter out of her crib and held her close, as her father and I watched the story unfold. The three of us sat there trying to comperhend exactly what had taken place. Struggling to dial the numbers on the telephone because I could not see through the tears that were streaming down my face and my hands were shaking so badly, I called my parents overseas to see if they knew what was goig on or if they had spoken with any of our family memebers that live in NY. My younger sister answered and you could hear the regular chaos going on in the background and at that point I knew that they had not yet seen the news. I told my mother what was going on and hung up to begin calling all of my family memebers that live in NY to be sure that they were ok. In the end we lost one family memeber in the WTC. Tell us your story: I remember being in my kitchen and I was learning a dance routine with my friend Stuart,he was in a rush to get to an audition and had to get ready,he went upstairs whilst i carried on about my business,he had obviously turned on the television,he shouted for me with the urgency in his voice i knew it was important..there was a live still on the screen,no sound the first plane had struck and there was this image of the first tower on fire..i just said to stuart "Is this a film" as I said that the second plane struck..my heart was in my stomach the sheer magnitude of what was unfolding infront of us was unbelievable (still is).. "Please god don't let there be people in there" was going through my head,knowing only two well there must be..We sat silent watching the events unfold.. The events of that day have been scared into my memory and I think about it probably every day. Now when i see the film footage it's still seems unbelievable but sadly..I like to believe there is a God and understand many people find great comfort in their faith but I'm sorry he's got some pretty big explaining to do to let so many innocent people and their families suffer in such a horrific way. One of our customers had their t.v. on and just started yelling. We went and found the T.V. used for training videos and turned it on and watch the horrible news together. Some of us did leave work early for the day as we were told we could if we needed to. I rushed home to get my kindergarner from school and younger child from the sitters just to have them near me. I remember how hard it was to explain to both of them why me and my husband were crying later in the evening as we watched the news. This year now 4 and 6 they understand a little more of what happened that day. My 4yr old told the sitter today I'm wearing red,white and blue in memory of the people who died in the building hit by a plane last year. My 6yr old had an all school assembly by the american flag today where they resited the pledge and sang patriotic songs as a school. He also was dressed in red,white and blue.All of us at my work made an effort to wear red,white and blue and just remember while we took calls as usual. one crew member made each of us flag pins of beads and saftey pins. many of us helped so there was enough for all. Today has been a glumy kind of day for all I think even though we have riased above last year and grown closer to friends as well as our families. Not a day goes by that I don't tell my family I love them. Today the 4 yr old didn't want to let me go at the sitters. I think she senced the mood we all have been in today 09/11/02 one year later. I was tuned in to NBC-the Today show when suddenly on my screen appeared one of the Twin Towers with smoke and flames spewing from it..I thought I had hit a button on my remote that took me to a dreaded "action" movie. My rational was broken as the voice of Katie Couric announced a plane had hit Tower One..likening it to the small plane that had hit the Empire State Bldg. many yrs. before. I sat trying to absorb what was unfolding before my eyes..as News Copter 4 stayed fixed on this I could see a plane appear on the r side of the screen, watched it pass turn and as I screamed aloud for it to stop it penetrated Tower 2. I reached for my phone to call one of my son's and the line was dead.. cut off I felt this tremendous feeling of detachment and doom.. the horror that continued to unfold from that moment is impossible to explain..I was to learn a dear friend's husband Lt. Thomas O'Hagan, NYFD had perished as did a neighbor's son FF Michael Carroll.. To this date I cry, mourning the tremendous losses of 9-11-01. I pray for all our Heroes, their Families..I thank all those who put their lives in jeopardy to save others, to the men & women who worked in Rescue, Recovery and Volunteers who did whatever they could I stand beside President George W. Being self-employed working from my home, having the TV on just isn't conducive to getting work done. But my mom was visiting from Phoenix, and would be leaving within a couple of hours for home (via airplane, of course), and we were waiting for weather updates and passing the time. Initial reports and shots of a burning WTC-1 didn't get me too worked up, I mean, they'll have a way to take care of that problem. I mean, this is NYC! But as the story unfolded, my dismay at watching the second one crash into WTC-2 -- well, I remembered an identical feeling when Challenger blew up years ago -- an insult to my mind that had my brain reeling from the impact... Graphic images tortured my soul, yet I couldn't turn away. The fact that events kept unfolding faster than I could grasp them -- panic was beginning to envelope me. What would be next? Of course we heard the news of the grounding of the planes. Mom had rented a car, so she just hopped in and headed for Phoenix. And I was all alone watching the buildings come down. Don't know as I've ever felt so alone in the middle of calamity. Never did get much work done that day... I won't ever be the same again, and I won't ever forget. Shortly after 9-11 me and two other people went down to New York to work with the Red Cross. I?m not one to really do things like that. Usually I let huge challenges like that pass me by and then later wish I had done something rather than sit back and feel helpless. I thought going there would empower me. Make me feel like I had done something for my country and in some small way honor those who died by trying to help clean up their city. On the second day I was there I was asked to go work at Ground Zero at a place that had been set up to fed, support, and offer a place of rest for rescue workers. I wanted to say no. I was so afraid to be in that place that had so much death and destruction. But I went. I wanted to be strong and go wherever they needed me. We all piled on a bus. We has red badges with our names and pictures and in big bold writing ?Ground Zero-Full Access.? Everyone was full of nervous energy. Only one person on the bus had been to Ground Zero before. He told us that he couldn?t impart to us what it was like. ?You?ll know when you get there,? he said. We inched through traffic. We were curious. We were about to see in the flesh a site that had been made mythical to us through hundreds of hours of television coverage. We were almost there when we heard cheering. We looked out of the windows of the bus and saw about fifty people yelling and clapping and holding up large signs that said ?Thank You? and ?You are Heroes? and ?New York Loves You!!? Wow, we thought, people are here just to say thank you to nameless faces for what we were doing. It was overwhelming. Myself and others cried a little bit. We went through a check point guarded by men with machine guns. We started to see ash covering everything. The bus got silent. This was getting real. Then the smell came. It happened slowly. Like maybe at first it was just some fumes from the bus. But then a smoky smell was added to it. Then to the mix came a smell that I couldn?t identify. I began to breath a little deeper. The smell was horrible, but I really wanted to know what it was. Then it hit me. I suddenly knew what the smell was. I didn?t want to admit to myself what it was but I knew. It was the smell of burnt flesh. You wouldn?t think that you would know what that smelled like. But when it hit your nose and traveled to your brain?you knew. It was unmistakable. It was a smell that in one degree or the other was all over the city. You just had to get close enough to the source of it to really get a handle on what it was. Or maybe you just had to get close enough that you had no choice but to acknowledge what it was. It is a smell that would be with me long after I left New York. For weeks I would smell it every time I woke up. Even now when I think about it I can smell it like I am still standing there. When we walked up to where we got our first real view of ground zero we all stopped. Even our armed guard stopped moving to give us a moment to take it in. One thing that I don?t think people really realize is just how enormous it was. It was bigger than words. On TV it looked almost small. Compartmentalized. Like it all fell in a neat pile. No. It was so big that?I don?t know?it was just so so big. So much. I was asked a bit after being there to walk around the rubble with a fire fighter to deliver water to the workers. And although the time I would spend with this man would change my life I don?t think we ever told the other our names. But we were brothers. United in a common mission to clean up this?mess. This disaster. As we were walking along we talked about his wife and his kids and of a friend he had lost in the collapse of the second tower. As we were walking there was commotion in front of us and he began to run to it. He yelled to me to follow close behind. You have to understand that the rubble and the area around it were very unstable. He new the lay of it better than me. It really just wasn?t safe for me to be without him. But as we neared the group and saw what was going on I stopped in my tracks. I saw a body?half a body really. It was a person, but only from the waist up. It was so badly burned you couldn?t determine its color or gender. It had no hair. The smell was more than I could handle. A firefighter to my right began to vomit. Someone behind me began to sob. Others began to work the body onto a tarp. My comrade turned and told me that they didn?t need us here. I was so relived to get away. We pretended we didn?t see it. I handed a bottle of water to the man who was throwing up. We continued on our trek to hydrate the workers. He began to tell me that he thought I was amazing for being there. He said that he couldn?t imagine coming so far from home to do what I was doing and that he was really grateful. I told him that he was being silly. That was the word I used to this huge fireman with the thick accent of a native New Yorker. Silly. I told him that what I was doing didn?t compare to what he was having to do. He said ?It?s just my job.? What he was going through shouldn?t have to be anyone?s job. Then we heard a yell and saw all these guys running. We followed. There was a firefighter covered by a beam. I helped them get it off of him. There was blood everywhere. We got the beam off and I stepped back to let them all ?do their job.? When my buddy came back over to me there was blood on his face. It wasn?t his. I wiped it off with a towel. Then I began to cry. I was very ashamed of this. I was there to be strong. I was there to lend support. But I couldn?t help it. We walked over to the side, away from all the workers, and he wrapped his arms around me and we cried together. It made me feel much less weak. I saw that this whole thing was really just more than anyone could bare. We finished giving out the water and made our way back to the Red Cross center. On the way back he gave me a beanie baby that his daughter had given him. He told me he wanted me to remember him. And to remember this. And to pray for him. We hugged again and then he walked away. We would never forget each other. I knew that this small amount of time that we had shared together would be forever burned into our brains. I went inside and started making some peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Then my legs just went out from under me and I was on the floor before I knew what was going on. They took me to the Red Cross break room. I felt emptier than I ever had before or ever felt since. Suddenly in the doorway was my fireman and a friend of his. His friend gave me a rosary. My guy patted my back and told me he knew I would be fine. Then he ventured out back onto the ash covered ground. I told them I had to go home. I couldn?t take being there. I got on the subway. That?s when I blacked out. I was in shock. I remember suddenly coming back into my body somewhat and the doors to the subway opened. I just got out. I didn?t know where I was and I wasn?t concerned about it. I walked aimlessly for a very long time. I tried to ask people where I was but I couldn?t talk. My mouth would move but no sound would come out. They would stare at me and talk to me but I wasn?t even hearing anything. I didn?t know what was going on but I wasn?t worried. I was as lost on the inside as I was on that street, so in my utter self abandonment, it didn?t matter where I was. A cab stopped. The cabbie got out and asked me if I knew where I was going. I shook my head. He slowly walked me to his cab and started to drive. He told me I was in a bad part of town. ?You could have gotten shot,? he said. He asked me my name and I had no idea what it was. He asked me where I was staying and the best I could do was say ?At my friend?s. Its by a bar with a purple awning.? He drove me around for over and hour while I came enough into my senses for him to figure out where he needed to get me. When we got in front of the building he stopped in the middle of the road got out and took my keys from me. He unlocked the front door of the building and walked me to the apartment. He pointed at the door and asked me if anyone was there. I said yes. He handed me the keys, knocked on the door, said ?Thank you and God Bless,? and disappeared down the hall. When one of the people I was with opened the door, the look in her eyes scared me. She looked at me like she had no idea who I was. When I looked in the mirror I knew why. 1) I was covered in ash from head to toe except for a circle on my face where my face mask had been. And 2) My eyes were empty. There was no twinkle. No life. It scared me. I took a bath which I sat in until the water was freezing. When I stood up and the water ran off of me it still left behind a film of ash. So I had to take a shower. I looked in the mirror and my eyes looked a little better. But the smell was filling the room. It was in my cloths. So I threw the shirt, jeans, socks, and underwear out of the window. I wanted them away from me. I wanted to lose that smell. I never thought I would see my firefighter again. Until tonight when I was watching a show on TV about the Red Cross?s work with September 11th. Suddenly there was a picture on the screen of me and my fireman walking by the rubble with our boxes of water. In the picture we were looking each other in the eyes and smiling. It was taken from behind. It froze me to see it. Suddenly it all came back to me. The look of it, his voice, and more than anything the smell. And I cried. Harder than I have in awhile. And I prayed for him, just like he asked. And I prayed to God that I would never be confronted with that picture again. Its still too fresh. It will still be that way in fifty years. That picture held a million memories I never wanted. And worst of all, it was permeated in that smell. But my heart has always belonged to New York. Our family, being Military has always kept our pride in our America very close to our hearts. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I live in Southern Indiana, where my day began early on September 11, 2001. My husband and I had made plans to go out one of the lakes just outside Louisville, Ky. We arrived at the boat rental office about 5 til 9am. As we walked in the door, the TV was on and was telling how a plane had hit the World Trade Center. My best friend, my husband and I just stood there in shock. We continued to watch and speculate about how and why it happened, when suddenly another plane hit the other tower. I don't think anyone said anything for quite a few minutes. The only way to explain what was going on in my head is that for the first time in my 22 years, I thought of the U.S. as being volnerable. I have been pretty patriotic all of my life, but in that moment, the love for my country and the people in it grew in a way I never thought possible. We decided that if this was a terrorist attack then the worst thing we could do (having no means to go to the sight and help in that manner) would be to change our day and turn around and go home. We thought that if the world was going to war, it may be the last chance to have a relaxing day on the lake. We left on the boat before we heard about the Pentagon. When we came back about 5 hours later, we heard about the Pentagon and the plane in Pennsylvania. We rushed home to call relatives immediately. My best friend and myself having many family and friends in the DC Metro area who are directly associated with the Pentagon. We were blessed to find that none of our family or friends were injured. Also, my father-in-law, we found out, was on a bus on his way to the hotel right next to the Twin Towers when the first plane hit. From his account, the people on the bus took a vote to turn around. Thank goodness. My husband's cousin also worked at the WTC, and had just walked out of the subway when the first plane hit, and ran back into the tunnel and back onto the train, narrowly escaping falling glass and debris. It has not been until a year later that I have been able to come close to grasping the enormousness of the event. After having the media repeat the crashes over an over again, I believe I became dull to the reality of it. I didn't want to believe that so many Americans could be killed in one such horrific event. I cannot express my sorrow for the lives that were lost that day. Also, the innocence of our generation. Also I have fought with not knowing how I should feel and if I have a right to cry. So many people lost parents, children, spouses, and friends, that I feel that I should be grateful for not losing anyone close to me. Yet, at the same time I think about all of the people who lost their lives and all of the lives that won't be touched by these many we lost. All of the children who won't be born, all of the important progresses that won't be made because the people who were to make them are no longer here. We have lost more than we can ever imagine. I can't help but cry for my children who will grow up wondering when the next attack will happen, something I never thought about as a child. I just hope that our country will not forget the passion, generousity, and true patriotism we have found this past year. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My husband and I sat with butterflies in out stomachs as we waited to see the doctor on September 11th, 2001 at 8:40 am. On the day before, I had taken an over-the-counter pregnancy test, and it was positive. The news was on in his office and reporters were everywhere on the screen. Suddenly, the news showed a picture of the first tower burning and stated that a plane had just hit it. I remember thinking, "what a horrible accident." My husband and I chatted a bit, guessing what could have caused such a freak commotion. Then, to our complete surprise and disgust, the second plane hit. Immediately,we knew this was no accident. Here we were anxiously awaiting to confirm our news and celebrate the new life we were bringing into the world, the miracle we had been given, as so many others were dying as we sat there. Our emotions completely torn-uncertainty, anger, saddness, hatred, surprise, dread, guilt, anxiety. And ironically, happiness, thrill, joy, love, exuberance, peace. The day for us was one of definite uncertainty. We wanted so much to share our great news...our new life. But how could we when so many were in mourning-guessing the future of our great country? My husband and I (me especially) have this past year learned to count our blessings...count them one by one. Yes, we were bringing a life into this uncertain, hatred-filled world, but we were also bringing a life into this free, strong, loving world. A world we love, and a country we are proud to say we love! GOD BLESS AMERICA, AND GOD BLESS EACH ONE OF US!!!!
