We didnt really think anything of it until our teacher came back in the room. Our teachers face wasnt smiling like he always use too, he said that the Word Trade Towers were hit by a plane. We didnt really hear anything until we got home. I ran out of the car and my mom wasnt home so I went next door. We turned on the tv and saw people jumping from the towers I was in great distress. I thought to myself why would any one ever do this? but I knew that God was in Control. No matter what happens God will always protect us. I must have watched the news the most that day a day in which history happened. Even through bad times I knew God had purpose with this. He called after the first plane hit to tell me he was OK, he said he loved me and the kids and that was the last time I heard his voice. When the second plane hit his building,I was scared but hopeful that he would escape. When I was told the building fell, I fell to the floor of the dining room where I was feeding the children and said "Oh my God, he is dead." I began hyperventilating and felt numb all over. The rest of the day is a blur of feeling so cold and trying to warm up in the sun as the fighter jets flew overhead. I spoke to so many people who hoped I had gotten word from him, but I never did. People tried to make sure I was OK and took care of the children, but I was not OK. I just wanted him to come home. I sat on my front steps waiting for him to walk around the corner from the train, many did come, but not him. My husband Thomas of eight years, the father of our two children (2 and 4 months) was gone. I had known him for 22 years, began dating at 13, we had grown up together, what would I do without him... Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11 was like any other day, minus the fact that it was my 14th birthday. I got to school around 9, completly unaware of the drama that was unfolding around our country. In homeroom I heard one of the gym teachers remark "there has been an explosion at the World Trade Center" but I shrugged it off as propaghanda until I got to my first hour and saw the images of the second plane smashing into the South Tower. I was in utter shock, to say the least, and my class watched in awe as the buildings crashed to the ground. My teacher, overwhelmed with grief, turned off the television... and with that, the lights went out. All the power in the school was gone, but we were not informed why until days after. It suddenly occured to me that my aunt was only blocks away from all the chaos in New York; she works a few blocks from the towers. Frantically I tried to get ahold of my mom but to no avail. Finally my mom came to the school and picked me up, saying that she had been on the phone with my aunt as the second plane hit and that is why I could not get through to her. I was checked out and had to sit in horror on the couch, watching the story unfold. It was a bitter blow to my family as we found out news of hundreds of firefighter casualties. All of my mom's cousins who were men were firefighters, and we would not find out if they were alive or not for several days because everyone was trapped in the city. The rest of that day was so numbing. I sat emotionless on the couch, hoping that this was all a horrific dream and that at any moment, I would wake up and all would be safe again. But as time passed it was revealed that reality was more devastating than we could ever imagine. I've shed so many tears for those lost; been so proud of those who stood out as heroes; seen so many pictures of people who had perished beneath the rubble. Eerily, in the summer of 2001, I had visited 3 places: Washington, DC, New York City, and Pennsylvania. I was relieved that I got to see all three places while they were still in their prime. All I can do now is pray that America has the strength to recover... and I know we will prevail. This would be an event that would affect the lives of people near and far. Many were lost in this attack but many were also saved by todays hero's. While all this chaos was going on I was sitting in my second period class at the Bellevue Jr. High in Bellevue, Ohio. When the news came on we were all lost in confusion. Not knowing what was going on or what would happen next we all watched and listened in anticipation. When all was done we were left with lost lives, trapped men, women, and children under all the ruble and a wound that would forever scar those who had to witness or live through this event. Tell us your story: I was already in school, Computer Science, kind of a drowsy 8:00 am class that drags on the morning, kind of your typical first class. We were all just sitting there, the whole class when someone in our class with spikey blonde hair who was late comes running in his eyes wide telling everyone that planes had crashed into the World Trade Center Towers, the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania. Everyone kind of stopped everything they were doing, and it took a while for such an extreme thought to enter their heads. Everything I ever knew about planes, New York, the Pentagon, terroism, every factor involved converged into my first thoughts of; Oh my God, and We're Under Attack. Mr. Mokry, an old teacher who had been teaching at my school since 1969, whom I thought knew everything stayed calm. He asked him more details. These details entered into my head with the flood of fear and anxiety and disbelief. Picturing this was too hard. Soon, Mr. Mokry told us that we must go on with class unless notifyed by the Administrators. I could'nt think of anything else but the tradgedy, trying to picture such an event was beyond me. Finally, I reached my next class which had a TV on. The scope of the entire disaster hit me like a million voices screaming out. It was like I could feel the weight of fear of those two towers full of people. I just sat at my desk mesmerized. Dr. Veach, our principle got on the intercom and told everyone about the events, not going into detail, and trying to keep everything going as normal. Administrators came by and told us to turn off the TV's the teachers however kept most of them on in defiance, as well as radios. In each class, as the news progressed with more information, I became more and more horrifyed. I remember the thoughts mainly of "There are still more planes unaccounted for that may be potential threats." As well as "Oh my God, people are falling from the sky," as many people jumped out of the towers. I was watching sheer madness and chaos. All at once, the world which I knew to be safe became completley uncertain, and horrifying. As the day moved on, I felt more and more purpose. A deeper sense of mourning, as the President addressed everyone, and I started looking for what I could do to help. That was the most tumoltuous day of my life. I noticed that the sky was filled with heavy dark clouds. I woke my 17 year old daughter to get up for school. I had turned on the TV to check what type of weather would happen today. I was making breakfast and my daughter was watching the TV. Suddenly my daughter Heather called to me, Hey Dad the World Trade Center is on Fire. I came into the living room and I looked at the TV in disbelief. I could see the one of the twin towers on fire burning. While I was watching what was happening I saw the second tower get hit by an aircraft. I watched in shock as the second tower exploded in a ball of flames. I was dumb struck when I saw this event happen. I saw it but I could not believe what I was seeing with my own eyes. In that beginning I felt strange the rest of the day. upon listening to the radio and hearing that another plane had hit the Pentagon and another had crashed in Pennsylvania. I went to work that morning and upon learning this was real and the entire world would be changed by this act. At the time we did not know whom would be responsible for this tradegy. I was informed at work that I had to leave and go home. I called my wife and my son in L.A. and my daughter and told them I was leaving work and going home and listen to the news. For many weeks and months I was affected by this event and I must say it has changed my life. Knowing that in God plan this is a reality check. It was my freshman year of highschool and by the time i found out it was 5th period. My history teacher came in and turned the tv on and told us to watch it. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just had breakfast with two of my co-workers, Amy and Debbie, in the cafeteria. We were leaving the cafeteria when Amy's cell phone rang. It was her boyfriend, asking if she had heard about the two planes hitting the World Trade Center. We questioned her "Both towers? Is he sure? Someone's putting him on." It seemed impossible. Amy went outside to have a cigarette while Debbie and I continued to the elevator to return to our 6th floor office. We were discussing the possibility of such a thing happening as we got onto the elevator. A man we didn't know asked "Are you talking about those planes that hit the World Trade Center?" This was the moment when I realized that something had really happened. When we reached the sixth floor, there were televisions and radios blaring as people listened to the news. People were lined up against a western window, looking out at smoke from the Pentagon (although I didn't know at the time what they were looking at). I approached one of my co-workers and asked what was happening. There was a lot of misinformation available along with what was later verified. Based on what she had heard on the radio, my co-worker told me that two planes had crashed into the towers of the World Trade Center, a plane had crashed into the Pentagon, the West Wing of the White House was on fire, and a bomb had gone off in front of the Department of State Building. My stomach curled into a hot ball of anxiety and I thought "The Government is under attack and I'm in a Federal Building." I was in a Federal Building in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995, only 4 blocks away from the Murrah building. I'm not shy about seeming paranoid; I figure it's better to be sheepish tomorrow than dead today. I picked up my phone and called my boyfriend, who works in Alexandria, VA. I told him I was leaving the building immediately and asked him if he was going to try to come home or stay put. He didn't want to risk the Metro system until he had a better idea what was going on, so he opted to stay put for the time being. I told him I loved him and to be careful. I slapped a post-it note on my computer screen that said something like "Gone Home" and shut down my computer. I grabbed my handbag and approached the windows where people were watching the smoke from the Pentagon. My manager was there and I informed him that I was going home and I'd do the paperwork on it tomorrow. He just nodded. I saw a few people waiting for an elevator, but I preferred to take the stairs. I wasn't getting on an elevator in a possible emergency situation. I galloped down the stairs. I only saw one or two other people going down. Nobody seemed very concerned. I suppose you could argue that I was over-reacting, but I'm not ashamed of my behavior and I'd do the same thing again in a similar situation. On my way out, I went by both Debbie and Amy's desks, but neither of them were there. As I got closer to the building's exit, I saw a few more people who were obviously evacuating. Maybe 20 or 30 other people seemed to have the idea that it was good to get out of the building. It was another hour or two before the building was officially closed, and I heard from co-workers later that it was a nightmare getting out of the building. With everyone trying to leave at once, it was total gridlock in the parking lot. It was clear and easy when I left. I went home and started watching television. I tried to contact a friend in New York. I couldn't get through, so I sent him an email. I called his sister in Oklahoma to see if she had heard from him yet. I woke her up and told her to turn on her television. She turned it on just moments before the first tower collapsed and she immediately started crying. I reminded her that Eric (her brother) had no reason to be anywhere near the towers, and that it would probably be difficult for him to get a phone line for a while. I felt rotten for waking her up to such bad news. My boyfriend, Paul, called. He was going to try his luck on the Metro. I didn't love the idea of him getting on the Metro, but I knew that it was pointless for me to get into the traffic jam on the beltway to try to come get him. He didn't know how long it would take him to get home, and said he would get a cab from the Metro station. For reasons that I don't clearly remember now, I didn't like that idea. I think I just wanted to see him. So I went to the New Carrollton Metro and waited for over two hours. When he arrived, he didn't see me, and hopped into a cab. I got the cab driver's attention, and Paul came home with me. He said the Metro had been jam-packed with people, and that the National Airport Metro station was closed. As they went past it, he could see uniformed men guarding the entrance. Along the way, he also saw smoke from the Pentagon, and bits of paper swirling through the air. He said it was all very surreal. I was glad to have him home. Like the rest of the nation, we were glued to our televisions most of the day. By late afternoon, I felt sick and dazed, so we decided to go into our back yard and get away from the constant replay of the day's horror. We sat in our leafy back yard under a gorgeous blue sky and had cool drinks. We knew we were among the "lucky ones." We were miles from the actual sites of the attacks; we and our loved ones were safe. But somehow it was difficult to feel lucky that day. It was difficult to feel anything but numb and sick. I still feel that way if I think about it too much. Like most people, though, I've gotten back to normal. I try not to think about it too much, and I hope that there won't be any more attacks. I've done what little I can to make myself feel a bit safer, and I'll continue to be among the first people out of the building at the first sign of danger. Tell us your story: Hi My name is Janelle I have been married for 3 great years to my loving husband who is also in the United States Marine Corps. I remember it like it was yesterday. The night before my husband was leaving to go to Calf. to do cold weather training in the mountians. That night we packed him up and said our good-bye's. He stayed on base that night. I went home and went to bed about 11pm that night. That next morning my mom started yelling at me to get out of bed she kept saying "we are being hit" I did not understand her (she was packed for the the year 2000 in 1998) so I figured she was freaking out like normal. I got of bed and sat in front of the T.V. only the first plane had hit. My mom got in the shower and I was still watching T.V. all of a sudden the second plane hit. I knew then it was bad. My husband's plane had left that morning at 7:45am I had know idea what his plane number was. So I was freaking right along with my mom. Living on a base you would think we would know something. I got in my car and drove to one of my husbands fellow marines mother's house they had no idea what had evan happend. So we got in my car and went back to my house. Driving down the road on what seemed to be the perfect day weather wise could be so bad. When we got back to my house I could not do it any more I started to cry sitting by the phone hoping to hear my husband voice. I did not here his voice for a week they where in the air when it happend thay dropped their plane and went into marine mode. After these last three years every-one has gone back to normal being rude and not thankful for what God has gave us. All I have to say is Thank You God for giving us the men and women who risk their lifes for me to be able to write this or to put a flag in my yard. IT WAS AN ABSOLUTLY BEAUTIFUL DAY. WE DIDNT EVEN HAVE THE TV ON. WE MADE A BIG BREAKFAST AND PLAYED WITH THE KIDS. THEN I GOT READY AND WENT TO WORK AROUND 840AM. IN THE CAR I TURNED ON MY RADIO. SUDDENLY EVERY STATION BEGAN TO REPORT ON THE PLANES CRASHING. BY THE TIME I GOT TO WORK ALL 4 PLANES HAD GONE DOWN. I WENT INSIDE THE BUILDING AND EVERYONE WAS UPSET. MANY PEOPLE HAD FAMILY IN THE EFFECTED AREAS. THEY LEFT EARLY. I DO CUSTOMER SERVICE FOR UPS. ALL THE REST OF THE DAY WE HAD PHONE CALLS FROM CUSTOMERS WANTING TO KNOW IF SERVICE WAS AFFECTED. ALL OF THEM WERE UPSET AND WANTED TO TALK ABOUT IT. AS MORE NEWS CAME, UPS BEGAN POSTING INFORMATION FOR THE EMPLOYEES ON THE INFORMATION PAGE. OUR SUPERVISORS PRINTED THEM AND PASSED THEM OUT TO KEEP US UP TO DATE. A TV WAS PLACED IN THE CAFETERIA. AS MORE NEWS BECAME AVAILABLE, LESS AND LESS CALLS CAME IN. MY ENTIRE DEPARTMENT WAS UPSET AND ANGRY. WE JUST COULDN'T BELIEVE IT. HOWEVER, WE ALL AGREED WE WERE GONNA TAKE ACTION ON WHOEVER DID IT. THAT NIGHT I WENT HOME AND STAYED GLUED TO THE TV. I was going out for a little over a month. The sea trial was calle com 2 x. It was the last big underway before my 6 month deployment to the arabian sea. Well, that day at 7:00am, I was thinking about the attack on pearl harbor on the flight deck. I looked around at the other ships, and I said to myself. Look what we have today! Nobody can touch us! We have more sophisticated technology. I remember it was a hot sunny morning. Just another typical day. I dreaded going out to sea. It meant attitudes would change, fights would break out. and the worst: home sickness. Well anyway I went to my berthing lounge and as soon as I got in there, the whole lounge was packed! And I realized that cnn was on. So I said g, whats going on here! They cleared the the view of the t.v. and then I saw the worst thing in my life. first I looked at the 2 towers on fire, then I looked at the caption and it read: 2 planes crash into the world trade center. I was in disbelief! I called home. And officals were beleiving this tragedy was a huge act of terroism. We didnt know for sure until The pentagon was hit. Thats when I felt the knot in the pit of my stomach. "Were going to war". I had tears in my eyes. I watched everything until it was time to go to work. We were supposed to go to the carribean, but due to the attacks the cno (commander of naval operations) ordered us to protect the coast of Washington. So I was there for 6 days. I was scheduled to leave for deployment March 17, 2002, but we were called upon to leave Feb.7, 2002, in support of Operation enduring freedom. I can tell u one thing, We are kicking butt against terroists! My command alone captured 3. Tell us your story: I don't exactly remember the time that the phone rang, but it was my boyfriend calling to ask me if I had watched the news yet, being that I don't watch the news, ever, I thought to myself "this must be serious". I asked what happened, and he told me that a plane had just flew into Tower 1. I was in complete disbelief, and turned on the TV, only to find out that it was true. As I sat up in bed, awake even before my alarm had gone off, I couldn't believe my eyes. I got out of bed to go tell my roommate but her mom had just called her to let her know, so she was already watching it. Then came the plane that crashed into Tower 2, the Pentagon, and then the 3rd that crashed on it's way to DC.... rumors of car bombings... that they were on there way to LA... They... the unnamed and unknown. My fear increased when my boyfriend, who travels constantly, told me that he was on his way back to LA. Thankfully he was only in Oceanside, but none the less, I wanted him to stay there. All we (LA) were getting was that we were on alert and that we could be hit next. He assured me that he would stay for the next few hours. I tried to call work to find out if we were even going to be open that day, but of course making phone call was impossible, as phone lines were busy for the next 2 days. At the time I was an Analyst for a Fixed Income firm in Pasadena, which meant a 30 minute drive from the San Fernando Valley. One I didn't want to make in fear of what was to come. I finally got a hold of someone in the office only to tell me that the firm would be open, and that I would be required to come in. So I did. Because no one really knew the impact of what had happened that morning, the news had not fully hit the radio stations here, so I was left with a very quiet drive into Pasadena. What I was left with were the images that I saw over and over and over and over again. Ones that till this day, I can close my eyes and see. Ones that I will never be able to erase from my mind, as long as I live. I finally arrived at work and was not prepared for the news. Both towers had collapsed. Had I fully understood how those 4 simple words would change my world as I knew it to be... I only know now. The trading desk had every TV turned to the news... sitting at my desk, completely numb trying to process what the hell was going on. Who did this... and why? What gave someone that right to take all those peoples lifes... Then the phone rang, it was my roommate. She reminded me that our friend Mike worked in Tower 1 and that our other friend Dave worked in Tower 2. At that point I lost it. I called my boyfriend and couldn't get a hold of him, left him a message to call me back... I needed him. He called me back to console me and let me know that he was on his way home. After that I couldn't pull it together. An hour after I got to work, they sent us home. I don't know how I drove myself home that day. I don't remember anything. I do remember sitting on the couch watching the same thing over and over again. And crying because of all those people that I watched jump to their death... can you imagine being so terrified that you were going to die, that you jump out of a window that is over 100 stories up? I can't... but they did. I remember listening to the radio on the way home everyday, 98.7. Their parent station was Clear Channel Communication that was based out of NYC. Everyday for weeks they would keep us updated as to the latest developments, and everyday I drove home in tears. I was blessed enough to have all my family here on the west coast, I didn't lose anyone, including my friends. They were lucky enough to survive, but there were thousands that didn't. I cried for those thousands everyday. I didn't need to know them, all I needed to know was that they were mothers and fathers. Brothers and sisters... aunts and uncles, grandparents. I'm 27, and I just made my first trip to NYC this last June. My boyfriend asked me to think of the places that I wanted to visit the most... Ground Zero, I told him, nothing else I felt I needed to see. So, he took me. And I cried again. As I said before, I didn't need to live there, or lose a loved one to feel this loss, or to feel this anger inside. All I need to be is an American. As Information System Audit Project Leader and acting head of the department, I arrived at work as usual around 6:30 a.m., sipped tea as I read and answered my e-mail, reviewed my meeting schedule and prepared other work. Around 8:20 a.m., I called a prespecitve IS Auditor candidate to discuss our company's continued interest in him; around 8:27 a.m. we hung up. Our Financial Management Network (FMN) coordinator came to my office door to ask if I was going to attend the FMN session, I said, "yes". As our video and discussion sessions started at 8:45 a.m., I went to our 29th floor NE conference room around 8:42 a.m. I was handed a sign-in sheet and the FMN coordinator left the room to see if others were going to attend the session. Around 8:44 a.m. I heard what sounded like the whine of an incoming missile (I thought "are we under attack?" and tried to imagine from where a missile could possibly have been launched.)I heard a thunderous BOOM; the building shook violently and the floor (each floor was approximately one acre in size) did a rolling wave; I saw debris falling past the windows. I left the conference room and saw a co-worker standing spread eagle. He said he thought it was an earthquake, I told him something big had hit the building as there was debris falling from higher up and raining past the windows. I asked him if he had heard the incoming sound but apparently he had not. I went to my office to get my purse. I hesitated as to whether I should pick up my briefcase and my walking shoes but as I looked out my door, I our departmental Vice President and her assistant running out. I heard our disaster floor monitor say "everyone out". I headed to the exit door without my bag and shoes. As I exited, someone said he was going to the elevator, I shouted "use the stairs". I entered the stairwell with other co-workers; we started walking down in an orderly and quiet fashion. One guy said it felt just like an earthquake and I said it didn't feel like any earthquake I had ever experienced in Los Angeles from Sylmar to Northridge including the Loma Prieta. We continued to descend from the 29th floor. Around the 25th floor, there were 2 people wetting down a man who was having an asthma attack. We encountered the first of a steady line of fire fighters who looked winded and extremely hot and tired. They were fully outfitted in their fire fighting gear plus carrying extra fire hoses, air tanks, face masks, and cutting equipment. The asthmatic sat down on the right side (my left side) of the stairwell in the oncoming path of the fire fighters. As I recall, one firefighter attempted to assist the asthmatic man down the stairs because the asthmatic had fallen over and was blocking the path up the stairwell. I continued down the stairs. I lost sight of my co-workers who had passed me on the steps; I found myself with people from the 31st floor. I looked at the firefighters and noted their age as being between mid-twenties and mid-thirties with the exception of a few "seasoned" individuals. I wanted to say something to them to encourage them as they seemed out on their feet. I put my hand on the shoulder of one of the firefighters and said, "you guys have got a lot of heart". He smiled and said "thank you". I thought I saw the others straighten up a little and walk with a little more purpose. During the descent, we had no idea about what could have happended. A man behind me said he got a message from his wife on his message pager that said a plane had hit the building. We wondered if it was an accident. Somewhere around floor 20 or 19, the stairwell shook. The man with the message pager got another message from his wife that a second plane had struck Tower II. We then knew it was deliberate and put some pep in our step. I now was with some people from the 51st floor as someone asked what floor they were from. At floor 9, the overhead sprinklers were on all the way to floor 1. Around floor 3, structural damage could be seen; the same at 2. When we emerged from the stairwell at 1, the marble-lined lobby was in shambles. The lobby looked as though a bomb had gone off and the elevator wells imploded. The sprinklers were still on but the smell of jet fuel and the dust and smoke was not as bad there. Port Authority police directed us to the escalator just past the Tourneau watch shop. We ascended the escalator to the lobby of WTC5 and out the door next to Borders book store. More Port Authority police were outside to direct us away from the building. The police officers were saying, "away from the building, away from the building, don't look up, don't look back, keep moving, keep moving, keep moving, don't use your cell phones, keep moving". I walked across the street and up Fulton. Some people told me they waw the second plane circle around and fly into the second tower. About halfway up the block, I saw a large puddle of something red. It had the consistency of catsup but was bright red. I saw a pair of cork-soled platform black wedgies next to the puddle and a white towel partially saoked in the blood. A guy I didn't know came up to me and told me I didn't want to know what had been there. I said I did. He said someone's head had landed there and squashed on impact but it had been taken away. He said they couldn't find the body. I observed people just standing around; some dazed, some in hysterics, some trying to use their cell phones. Others just milling around. I continued down Fulton chatting with the stranger who told me he worked for the Fulton Fish Market. I turned to look at the buildings. They were both ablaze. I would see thick black smoke, flames, debris falling and people jumping. As we neared the South Street Seaport, the stranger met some friends and stopped to chat. All taxis were full, I saw no municipal buses. A red/white/blue Waterway ferry bus came along and I flagged it. The driver asked me where I was going , I said "NJ". He motioned to come aboard. I talked to the other passengers and listened to their stories, except for one rather nervous woman who wanted to go to Weehawken. We zig-zagged our way cross town to the 34th Street pier. At the pier, there was a crowd of people numbering around 1500. We quickly saw there was only one ferry running. I saw a woman walking along and spoke to her. She said it was such a strange day. As the crowd moved forward, after standing in line about 5 minutes, some new comers said the towers had collapsed. From our location, we could only see the black smoke despite the sky being clear. No one wanted to believe the towers were gone. The ferry arrived. I stayed near the open end so I could look out at NYC as we left for NJ. There were only a few puffy clouds in the sky and the vapor trail of a very high flying plane (probably military) and the thick black smoke. Upon docking at Weehawken (NJ), we disembarked and assembled in queues by destination and waited for the shuttle buses to arrive. After waiting 10-15 minutes, another red/white/blue Waterway bus arrived to take us to Hoboken terminal. The ride took about 15 minutes because the driver was letting people off at the regularly scheduled stops. When we arrived at Hoboken terminal, we were let off about 2 blocks away and walked in. The police had completely cordoned off the perimeter and no one really knew how we were to gain access to the station. One police officer had the presence of mind to raise the yellow tape and let us go to the station. Once in the station, I checked the board to see what time the Bayhead train was scheduled to depart (2:12 p.m.) and it was only a little before noon. I went to the ticket window to see which train I could take to Newark. I was told to go to Customer Service which was set-up as an emergency command center. They told me to take the Gladstone train to the Newark Broad Street station. I asked a conductor where to catch that train, he said track 17. I went to track 17, boarded the train and sat down wet and dusty. No tickets were checked. When we arrived at Newark and descended the steps, there was a NJ transit bus waiting to take us to Newark Penn Station. The bus let us off 2 blocks away and we walked in. I walked to the station checked the board to see what track I needed to go to. I went to track 3. There was an Amtrak train waiting to leave but couldn't because it couldn't close its doors. They said they were waiting for the delivery of a cable that would allow them to close the doors and leave. They expected there to be a 10-15 minute wait. I went inside the waiting room to use the pay phone. There were 2 women taking turns using the phone. Finally one finished and told me a call would go through faster if I called collect. I tried to use my phone card but it didn't work, so I used collect. My cousin answered at home and I told her to tell my Mom I was all right, at Newark Penn station, and on my way home and hung up. Upon going back to track 3, the Amtrak train's doors were closed and it left about 5 minutes later. We could see the NJ Transit train waiting to advance to the platform. We boarded, the train left the station. At least 1/2 of the people in our car had been at or near the World Trade Center (WTC) and were wet like me or sooty. We discussed facts about the WTC and our individual experiences that day. One pregnant woman had trekked to the ferry from the WTC on foot carrying a laptop and her purse. She got off at Matawan. I arrived in Red Bank around 3:08 p.m., still damp, wrinkled and a little sooty. I arrived home in Fair Haven around 3:15 p.m. I sat in the same spot almost constantly for two days watching TV following September 11, 2001. I had no bad dreams nor do I have any today. I have seen occurrences of the 1960's; having lived in Boston and LA, I saw the earthquakes, wild fires, civil disobedience, and day-to-day violence coupled with what we see at the movies and on TV and I realize I have been left a little numb. Not that I'm not concerned for those who were injured (physically and mentally) and for those who lost their lives, being there and seeing it up close, there was a disconnect from the reality of it all. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at my desk and, close to 9:00 a.m., I heard a loud "boom!". I thought that since my floor was close to the roof of the building, that maybe someone had dropped a big air conditioning unit or something. Then I heard the person in teh corner office yell and curse and we all ran into his office. We saw paper swirling in the sky and the top floors of one of the WTC buildings on fire. We all thought it was a terrorist bomb and imemdiately realized that people were dying. When the news reported a plane had hit the building we were releived because we thought it was just an unfortunate accident. I went back to my desk because I thought the "event" was over. I called my husband at home but he was in the shower. I then went into the conference room on my floor which had a full, clear view of the WTC. I saw the metal bend and people leaving the bulding. I remember thinking how is anyone going to put that fire out? Where are the police? Why aren't people evacuating? There were four of us in that room. In an instant, I saw a shiny plane, it looked silver and was larger than I could take in. As soon as I saw the plane, it struck the WTC. We all screamed and it took me a moment to realize when I heard the screaming that I was screaming too. Some people came in to the room and dragged us out - they said "get away from the windows." I went to my desk, got my purse and called my husband. He asked me many questions and I finally said " I have to hand up -we are under attack." I took the elevator dwon and in the lobby, the building personnel told us to evacuate. I asked where we shoudl go and they said to the street. I said "the street?- that is not an evacuation plan - I saw the plane, I saw the plane" He said he was sorry I had to see it but I should go. On the street, I saw co-workers - everyone in tears and looking at the towers burn. One of the cleaning ladies in my office grabbed my arm really hard and said "do not go to pieces." In retrospect I always wondered if she already experienced terror. I decided that it was not wise to stay ont eh street. The subways and bridges were also not options because I figured they were targets too. In a bit of a daze, I decided towlak to teh 2 train because I only needed to go 1 stop - at the same time I knew I would not get on the train. In the bottom of Chase Manhattan Plaza, I saw people in Chase bank making calls. I started to crumble and asked the guard if I could go in. He said yes - I wnet in and was placed at a desk with a phone and a cup of water. Soemone gave me a hug. I called my mother. I was hysterical but she lives uptown and I do not think she appreciated the gravity of the situation because she as planning on going out to keep a business appointment. We then heard about the Penatagon. OTher people came in crying - one had a son at AMEX, onelady knew people at Cantor Fitzgerald. Then, throguht the atrium we saw debris and peole running. I immediately thought the stock excahange had been hit. We also ran down some stairs throught he cafeteria. Insitinctively men picked up pallets of bottled water and I picked up a tray of cookies. We stopped in a service area ont hat floor thinking we were safe. We then saw people coverd with dust and bleeding. I remembe thinking that there was a fire and we were trapped. That was my true moment of fear. We learned that the people had come from outside - I still did not know any builidngs had collapsed. I saw a maitnenace office and went in there. They let me use a phone and I called some people to tell them I was safe. I was shaking. The maintenance man told me the buildings had collapsed. He had a mask and I took one. We then evacuated further downt he bulding until we ended up in the 5th sub-basement. I felt sagfe. There was mater, toilets, food and masks. People were praying, nervous but no panic. When we weret old to form a line for the elevator up we did. At some point, I told one of te maintenance men that I was nervous because I was pregnant - he said don't worry. At around 11:30 - we were told we can leave and we exited the building. I looked at Broadway and it was pitch black. People were dusty. I walked over the bridge and went home. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just driven through a Starbucks to get a jolt of java before starting my day when my cell phone rang. A freind told me that a plane had just flown into one of the twin towers in NY. I thought, "poor guy, must be a new pilot that veered off course and flew his little plane into the World Trade Center". I hung up and turned on the radio, a second plane had just flown into the south tower. My friend called back, "they think they were passanger jets that had been hijacked and there may be more!" I was stunned. I got to the Walmart I needed to service that morning and made a comment about it. They hadn't heard the news and immediately turned on a radio so we could follow what was going on. "The Pentagon's been hit!" The knot in my throat was so thick it was hard to swallow, I knew that this was a day that I would never forget. I got my work done as quick as possible and went out to my car and called my Mother in Maryland, I just needed to hear her voice! Today is the 1st anniversary of the attacks and my saddness is worst. During the year I have learned their stories, they are not just names to me, they could have been my family, my friends. I pray that God will continue to comfort all those who grieve, heal those who survived and bless this country with a renewed sense of humanity to each other. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was a beautiful sunny day and we were having a fence installed in our yard. A neighbor came out and said that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I went inside and put the news on just in time to see the second plane hit. I don't remember screaming, but I must have because my husband and the fence man came running. I started watching the news. The reports & images - planes missing; the airways shutting down; the Pentagon on fire. It was like a Tom Clancy novel and I kept waiting for Jack Ryan to come and save the day. But it was real. The phone call to our son's school; do we bring him home, what did he know. The call from the school nurse telling us he was hurt at recess. Everyhing seemed beyond our control that day. The dreaded feeling of "What else can happen?" Yet we survived. Though it was difficult to explain it all the our 1st grader and preschooler. How do you explain something like that. And when our first grader asked if the bad guys were in heaven with Baby Jesus and all the other people who died, it was the innocence of a child that let us know that everything, while maybe never being right again, that everything would be okay. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am Megan S.Gates, I didn't loose anyone close to me on September 11, but I still left school that day in tears. I live in Johnstown NY, about 3 1/2 hours north of NYC. I am a senior at Schenectady Christian School. When I woke up that morning I just felt that something wasn't going to be right. Of course, I didn't accept what actually happened. I was wearing my purple sweater and my tan skirt, as I sat in 1st period Philosphy class. Our headmaster opened the door and told us that a plane had hit the north tower of the World Trade Center. All of us wondered how could a plane do that, but didn't give that much though to it. Eight minutes later, he came in again, saying that another plane had hit the south tower of the World Trade Center. By that time we knew that something was going on, but didn't know what. We went to our next class, where 20 minutes later we were told about the Pentegon and that another plane was possibly high-jacked. We then knew that this was not going to be a normal day. We turned on TV's and tried to figure out what was going on. Then the two towers collapsed in front of our eyes. I then tried to help students who felt that their family members may not have survived. As it was for one of my friends, her uncle left the north tower for a coffee, seconds before it was hit. Flight 93 then crashed. The media, however, kept giving sketchy information on where the crash was in Pennsylvania. Of course who could blame the media. They were doing their best in the worst of situations. But I knew that my sister was in Philedelphia, and I just wanted to be sure she was safe. Through a miracle, I was able to reach my Father and to ask him about my sisters. He said that two of them had already called to say they were safe, but the third had not yet called. I then started praying that she would be safe. I knew that today, aynthing was possible. My school then had a prayer service, and updated us on what was going on. After the prayer service, our 5th grade teacher got a horrific call. Her brother-in-law had been on flight 93, her sister-in-law is Lisa Beamer. I finally got a hold of my father again, and my sister was fine. But that didn't make me feel any better. That day consists of a lot of running around, trying to find the latest news, helping, praying, listening to the president, etc... My Mom came to pick me up. I ran to give her a hug, and I told her, "Mom, I know the story of Pearl Harbor, and I have seen the movie, but I never thought I would see it in person." Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I guess I must have walked past the tv only a couple of minutes after the "Special Breaking News " broadcast had started. I'm assuming this because I was in a public, crowded place- the gym- and no one had turned down the work out music to make an announcement over the intercom. That moment was short lived. Soon, it became deathly still and quiet as everyone deserted their normal gym session to find the nearest set. I stood in front of the stationary bike looking at the screen, totally confounded. Was that really the world trade center with a plane stuck inside it? My thoughts went immediately to the challenge it would be for firefighters to get adequate water up that high, or ladders to rescue the people inside. Then, I heard the reporter speak the words that HADN'T crossed my mind: "possible terrorist attack." I left the gym then, anxious to get home and plan an alternate route to school as my normal route would've been the PATH to the world trade and I was running short on time. In my eight minute commute home, I missed watching the second plane hit. I was nothing short of confused when I entered the house only to turn on the news and see not one, but the two towers smoking. This was going to be much more complicated than how to contain the fire. This was no accident, no miscalculation. I was watching a deliberate war strategy unfold in front of my eyes. The terror did not really strike me as when the first tower fell. I was immediately overwhelmed with tears as the building collapsed to the ground. And when the second tower fell, my my tears and cries could not be subdued. The only thing that I could actually subdue was my immediate panic. My first instincts were to get my family and drive to Ohio or anywhere west of the tri state. I knew we would be hit next, being in such close proximity to NYC and I did not want to be in the line of fire when it happened. Although, initially, after the towers collapsing, the plane going down in PA, the Pentagon, my thoughts went to all those people affected and all the lives lost right in front of my face, I couldn't help but want to protect my loved ones. The only other person I knew directly that made the daily commute from NJ to the city, or who worked anywhere near the tower was my uncle, who fortunately, had a court date in NJ that morning. When it was all done, everyone I knew was accounted for. How lucky we were!- Because later on that night, having dinner with a friend near our local train station that had direct service to NY, I observed all the families waiting on the platform for their loved ones to disembark from the trains. Unfortunately, almost every train that night was severely under normal occupancy. It was a sorry site to witness. The last estimate was eighty people lost from my small town. Comparitive to the total loss, it was next to nothing. But those lives lost created a big dent in our small community. Life is slowly but surely, making its way back to normalcy or the equivilent in the perspective of things.As for myself, the numbness, disbelief and most of the fear has surpassed. But I would like to share one thing: although many of us wish to have tall tales, or grand exciting stories to pass on to the youth of the next generation, 9-11 is a far cry from what I had in mind. There's is no way to explain or describe. Even this narrative is not enough to express what was felt, heard and witnessed. Let us not make light of the disaster and destruction we were witness despite the "over-exposure" for the sole fact that we are still here. Able to come together and share what we felt, heard or witnessed. In this instance we were lucky enough to be witness, as opposed to the true victims- our fallen heroes.
