I would like to submit my story for this collection. I am simply going to cut and paste my recollection. I had typed that entire incident as I remembered it on the night of September 11th, 2001. It was published under the heading 'I am Glad to be Alive'. I was at the World Trade Centre (I work at the World Financial Centre building, across the highway from the WTC) on Tuesday morning. I walked out of the WTC just minutes (probably 8 minutes) after the plane slammed into the first tower. As I got out of the PATH train (which runs through the bowels of the WTC) I could smell something burning. There is a restaurant at the same level and I thought they must have had a minor accident. Sure enough, the fire alarm lights were blinking. People usually ignore these lights as these are a frequent occurrence. Of course, people at the restaurant were ignoring the alarm. I took the escalator that takes me to street level. As we approached that level, I suddenly saw people on the escalator above me running away; there was a great deal of commotion and shouting. I thought it must be a hostage situation and dashed toward the exit I usually take. I saw a man being supported by a policeman. It looked like he was bleeding. I assumed he had been shot and took off like a mad man. I slowed down when I realised that all the shops around me were closed -- and the scene outside the glass door some 50 feet before me was a little murky. There appeared to be some smoke outside. I wasn't sure what was happening. I walked to the exit and stepped out. It looked like a scene from a war movie. The street looked like a war zone. I immediately drew parallels to Beirut. Then another thing struck me -- the smell of burning had not gone away at all! How could a restaurant fire deep down smell all the way up here? I wondered. Then I saw the debris all around me -- some of it was still burning. I chanced to look up -- then the horror of it dawned on me. The WTC was burning! I whipped out my cell phone and tried to call my wife. No signal. Obviously everyone around me was using up the cell sites -- not enough network bandwidth to get my call through. Usually I turn right and go to my office. But the way towards my office appeared to be impassable. There was just too much debris there. So I crossed the road in front of me and then turned right to my office. Still no go. There was a police officer blocking my path. I stopped. But several others pushed through. He told me the only way was to go one block and then try to turn right. I did just that. That road had debris. I was pushing along when I saw -- right in front of me -- a huge hunk of what appeared to be freshly hewn beef sitting on the windshield of a car. I was shocked! What kind of person would store freshly cut meat -- even temporarily when taking it out of a truck and putting it into cold storage -- on the hood of a car? Just then a couple of people put a sheet of white cloth on that. Then I heard some women screaming and pointing to something below. I looked down, and a scant six inches from my foot I saw a foot. I managed to cross the highway that separates my office from the WTC. I struggled up a small embankment and watched as people poured out of my office building. I still did not know that a plane had crashed into the WTC. Then I heard someone say so. I just did not believe him. I thought to myself, this is a small fire -- these people should be able to contain it quite easily. Why would my building be in danger? I walked up to the security staff at my building and asked them if they were planning to evacuate the building. They said 'Not yet, but it could be any moment.' Decision time. Should I go up or go home? I decided foolhardily to go up. Since I work on the sixth floor -- any emergency exit would not be quite as painful as, say, an exit from the 38th floor (which is where I used to work). I pressed on up, took the first elevator. Just as I got off the elevator, I saw a couple of people rushing out of an adjacent office, saying they had just seen a second plane hitting 'our' building. Oh no! All I wanted to do at that time was call my wife and tell her I was coming home. I opened my office -- which I share with three others -- dialed home, only to find that I could not get through. I dialled again. In the meantime I heard the people on my floor rushing to the emergency door. I managed to get through to my wife and told her the WTC was burning, that there had been another plane crash and that I was trying to return home. Then I left. I was the last person on my floor to leave. As I wended my way down the stairs I was struck by how calm people were. This New York resilience is something I saw time and time again today. We left the building and I got out -- now I realised the second plane had slammed into the other WTC tower. Someone standing by said to me he had seen the plane coming from near the Statue of Liberty and slamming into the tower. I kept turning back to see what was happening. I saw at least three or four people jumping from what must have been the 40th or 50th floor of the WTC tower. They were flying out only to slam into concrete -- which I fortunately did not witness. They were obviously jumping from the fire and willing to take a chance with the jump. I was horrified. I looked at the pavement below me and saw many, many empty high heeled shoes. Did they come from the explosion? Not possible because they were all in pairs and undamaged. Then I got it -- this must have been people watching while the second plane crashed into the building. By now I was numb. It was almost 9:15 am. Or 9.20 am. I wasn't looking at my watch. I saw a few people with digital cameras taking videos and pictures of the building going up in flames. I kept walking until I reached a subway station I knew existed. I got into the subway numb with shock and escaped from the area. I got off the subway at 14th street and 4th Avenue and trudged all the way up to 33rd street and 8th Avenue. A mighty long walk, considering that each street takes about a minute at a brisk pace and each Avenue takes about 4 minutes. I reached Penn station at around 10 am. I got into what would be the exit train for me, the 10:43 am going home. Unfortunately they evacuated Penn station so I had to wait outside for about four hours before ultimately reaching home by the same train around 3:30 pm. I am glad to be alive. I hope and pray the thousands of souls that died there today go to heaven in peace. It was never their fault. It never is. Tell us your story: My husband and I were members of a group of 40 Duke University and University of North Carolina alumni who has just begun a two week stay at Oxford University's Kellogg College as alumni students on September 10th. We were beginning an intensive study of Roman Britain, complete with field trips to archaeological sites. Because our September 11th was six hours ahead of the day as experienced by our immediate and extended family members in the Washington DC area, my memories include our visit to a reconstructed Iron Age farm, where we had to dip our shoes in a solution placed there in an effort to ensure no 'mad cow' disease instance could occur. Seemed like the most serious situation we could face at the time. My travel journal also has a reference to the Fishbourne Roman Palace and a ploughman's lunch that day, at the Red Lion Inn, in business since 1147. How odd to experience the longevity of civilization on a day when its fragile nature would be so terribly exposed. It was 6:50 p.m. Oxford time when we started down the stairs of our dormitory, heading to the Commons for our evening gathering and dinner. A classmate rushed from the elevator. I remember she still had her wine glass with her. She said, " You don't know - terrorists attacked the World Trade Center with airplanes. The buildings collapsed. Tens of thousands may be dead. And another plane hit the Pentagon and another went down in Pennsylvania; it was probably trying to hit Camp David. We can use the telephone in the dorm hall. This is how you call transAtlantic." That is what I heard and how I heard it. I was an ocean away from my daughter and her sons, from my son and his wife. Somehow I was able to reach my son's home in Alexandria, Virginia; his mother-in-law was there feeding the dog. She was her usual matter-of-fact self, announcing that my son and her daughter were fine, just stuck in their offices. I asked her to call our daughter's home to leave a message because she would be in her classroom dealing with the crisis as a teacher. I felt desperate to connect with my family. What I wrote in my journal when night - not sleep - finally came: "...our world as we knew it is gone. I can't stop shaking inside. ....Circuits all busy so I can't get through. Our e-mail address from home does not work. I want to be at home with my children. I wonder about ....(and then listed the friends and the grown children of friends I knew lived in New York City). I wonder about (my daughter's) Muslim students and how she will manage. I wonder about (our grandsons, aged 13 and 11) being afraid. I wonder about (my colleagues) in the Fairfax County government buildings. "I think of those people trapped in foreign countries at the beginning of World War II. I think I have a tiny sense of what they must have felt, being trapped continents away from their loved ones. The distance......and I can do nothing about it. What if the terror spreads worldwide? What is next? "All flights from Europe are halted - we couldn't get home if we were supposed to - wonder how I can continue this vacation, this study that was to have been a celebration. How can our country continue? What about (my son and daughter-in-law's) businesses? How does (my daughter) help the children? "Absolute total vulnerability, the sense of it. Makes one afraid of waiting around here. American we say in our appearance. Have to get to bus station and to airport and somehow safely across the Atlantic. Wonder if we will travel again? Intimidation - this is what this is about. "Feeling completely alone and so incredibly frustratingly separate from what is now real. Connection is everything and I am not connected". Post Script to the 11th: I walked into Oxford town on the 12th, fearful of the many men on the street who were obviously from the Middle East, and ashamed for being fearful. On the sidewalk, signs, "Pray for America"; stars and stripes appeared in the buses. We stood in the college Commons with the rest of Europe for 3 minutes of silence; on television we watched the Queen sing the Star Spangled Banner in Westminster and heard Big Ben toll. We found sympathy and understanding from those who had endured the blitz, and from their children and their grandchildren. We eventually reached our own children by phone and new e-mail. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It has been my experience that the life of a university student tends to be anything but regular. Residence hall living only magnifies the effect. Chaotic schedules filled with classes, parties, study breaks, campus clubs, and sports gave me a feel of constant motion. A feel of energy and inertia not easily stolen. The evening of September 10th must have been much like any other, in that I stayed up late and went to sleep exhausted. I wish I could say that I remembered my dreams that night. I don't. I wish I could say that I had some decent recollection of the time leading up to that morning. I don't. The only detail I can recall with any certainty is that I slept, but very poorly. After tossing and turning all night, I must have finally been sound asleep. Strangely, I failed to wake when the phone rang. My roommate did. His mother was frantic, he later told me. He had yet to fully wake, but it was beginning to dawn on him that this day would be very different from any other either of us had ever known. Turning on the TV, talking to his mom, and now attempting to wake me, Mike woke me up full into the nightmare. I awoke to see footage of the second plane being replayed. Numbly, I crawled down from the top of the bunk we shared and sat with Mike in silence. He said goodbye to his mom shortly, knowing others would need the phone lines too. I couldn't begin to describe all the emotions flooding through me when I saw the first tower collapse. Disbelief and a feeling of extreme unreality. Shock and grief at the realization that there were likely to be thousands still inside both towers. Anger at whoever would visit this upon unsuspecting and largely innocent men and women; and children too, I realized. Disgust at the very idea that human beings are capable of such a slaughter. There are few words that even come close to appreciating the full range and intensity of emotion experienced that day. Hundreds of years from now, historians may look upon this day knowing its facts. They will never be able to know it like we do, much as we will never know the intensity and emotion of there time. Numbers and letters can be written down, but they only mean so much. Even memories fade in time. I will never forget the one lasting lesson that I took from that day. The phrase that sums it up is L'Chaim! To Life! In all the bloodshed and horror, in all the hatred and fighting, in all the dark times this world has to offer, the one surest way to honor those who have fallen is to live, and savor life. That day was anormal day for me I just did what I always do the sme rutine beforeI head of to school,I took the bus to Lancaster High School I was in 11th grade. I always go to my math teachers class before school starts beacuse hes really cool, when I went to his class I heard this student talking to my teacher asking him if we are going to war. When I heard him say that I didnt know what he was talking about,so the bell rang I just went to class thinking nothing of what that guy just said,Then when I walked in the class room I head everybody talking about what happend, and I was like what are you guys talking about. Then the teacher turned on the tv and I saw on of the towers on fire, and I saw that aplane crashed into it and they showed all these people running, at that time I thought it was just a plane crash I didnt know that it was a terrorist attack, then all of a sudden I saw another plane come on the screen and I saw it was going straight towards the 2nd tower and then it hit the 2nd tower I just sat there in shock, I was speachless, then I found out that 2 other planes where hijacked and I put 2 and 2 toghether and realized that we are under attack by terrorist.The rest of the day wasnt the same,I was like a walking zombie not thinking right,all I could think about is thoses towers in New York and how could somebody be so evil enought to crash airplanes into the twin towers. I was on my way to Mount St. Mary?s College, for a 9:10am Philosophy of Religion Class. Suddenly, as I drove down the crowded 405N freeway, n interruption on the National News Station, was abruptly interrupted with reporters from New York frantically reporting the beginning tragedies of the day as the planes flew into the Twin Towers. All I could think is, ?Wow, our life has just changed in a matter of minutes.? As I arrived at school I immediately called my minister of LACC LAX sector who was expected to leave for New York this morning. Tears, welled in my eyes as I thought of my finance, mom, and family. Now, it is a year later and my life has changed drastically since that tragic day. I have graduated since then, got married, and have a baby on the way. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001 I was in English 9 with Mr. Bellonte it was exactly 10:12 A.M. I was sitting next to the window. Across from me was Kristen Daniels and in front of me while I watched the television screen was Jason Buffington. To be honest I talked for most of the period not even paying attention to what happened mostly because I didn't understand the magnitude to the whole thing. This class is fourth period more then two hours after these tragedies happened. I was just finding out then because I had Band and Gym. My next class was Earth Science with Mr. Goldpenny. During this period we watched CNN. This was the first time I'd thought to my self what really happened that was so important that we are missing are classes to watch this. So I sat there and just watched CNN the whole period and begun to understand the horrifying things that were happening. I had begun to realize that I was witnessing first hand something that in ten years will be in a history book. A little kid will be learning this years later because they were to young to see it on television as I did. They didn't get a chance to see a plane fly at full speed filled with innocent adults and kids thinking that they were going on a business trip or on a vacation to California go straight into the World Trade Center in the middle of New York City. That explosion was extremely horrifying, ten minutes later they showed a plane also heading to California crashing into the Pentagon in Washington D.C. Many people were killed in both the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Later that morning a plane crashed into the ground in Pittsburgh. After an investigation reporters said that plane was headed toward Washington, a group of passengers on that plane stood up to the terrorists, Instead of killing hundreds or even thousands of people, like the terrorists intended the men and women on the plane took there own lives to help prevent more devastation in America, hundreds of volunteers helped to clean up the remains from the World Trade Center and the pentagon. The estimate number of American dead from the disaster on the World Trade Center, Pentagon and the people on the airplanes were about 3,200. If there was one thing I could say to the person that is responsible for these horrible things is "How do you live with yourself?" Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had the day off work on September 11th. I got up to do housework and turned on the t.v. to keep me company. The image I saw was of a building on fire. I thought "what am I seeing here?". As I watched and gathered more information, I saw the second plane hit the second tower. I sat in stunned disbelief. I couldn't believe what was happening. One of the commentators said there was no doubt after the second plane hit that this must be intentional. As reports that the pentagon had also been hit came in, I began to think that our nation really was under attack. I saw images of the White House being evacuated and then heard another plane was not responding to air traffic controllers. That turned out to be the plane that went down in Pennsylvania.When I saw the towers fall, all I could think was that they had reported that there could be as many as 50,000 or 60,000 people in those towers. It seems shameful to be relieved that less than 4,000 actually lost their lives. But when you think about how many could have perished it really was a blessing that more did not die. My heart aches for all the families who lost a loved one that day. Innocent people died that day in mass. It was so senseless. From people going to work, people flying in planes,firefighters responding to the call, police and ambulance personel...And the families that were left behind to try to pick up the pieces.I have the greatest sense of sadness for them. They have to go on in this world. All of the people who were lost were taken to a much better place to live with God. What a joyous way to end this story, for there is no better place than heaven.This country will never be the same, and I won't ever be the same either. Brown TRIBUNE-REVIEW (9/16/2001) Scott Pasquini awoke Tuesday in his Manhattan apartment excited about the start of his new career. Instead, the next few hours unfolded in scenes of unspeakable horror, forever changing the world around him. Pasquini, 22, who grew up in Upper St. Clair (Pittsburgh, PA) and graduated from Princeton University in May (2001), looked forward to his second real day on the job as a corporate financial adviser for Merrill Lynch, following a two-month training stint. "There were a lot of new things going on for me. I had just started to meet everybody that I was going to be working with," Pasquini said Saturday in an interview. The family was reunited late Friday at his parents' home in Upper St. Clair for the first time since the attacks. An eye-witness to the destruction of the World Trade Center, Pasquini said the experience was etched permanently in his mind--a series of gruesome images as indelible as snapshots from a camera. Shortly before 9 a.m., he was about to make the seven-minute hike from his apartment building past the twin towers to his office in the adjacent World Financial Center. "I was getting dressed in my bedroom and it sounded like a loud crash," he recalled. "Then I started to hear debris shower down on the building." Glancing from the window, he saw debris scattered across the lanes of West Street. A van swerved, jumped the median, and peeled off in the opposite direction. "This was very strange." On the way out, Pasquini asked the doorman if a car bomb had exploded. "Yeah, maybe," the doorman replied. "It must have been a meat truck or something. There's, like, meat all over the place." Pasquini saw a torso with no arms or legs in the street. Two hysterical women were pointing at a severed human hand on the ground, and a running man quickly covered it with his jacket. Nearby, Pasquini, still thinking it might have been a car bomb, saw a car that was partially ripped open, its rear windshield shattered. But the scope of the disaster quickly become apparent as he saw a gaping hole, flames shooting from it, in one of the World Trade Center towers. "In the eight weeks I've lived in New York, everytime I saw the World Trade Center, I thought, "'Man, those things are so impressive. They're so tall and so massive.' I never got used to the height of those buildings and the massive size." "Now, the north tower was on fire." Pasquini tried using his cell phone to call his parents, Russ and Karen Pasquini, and his brother Brian in Shadyside to tell them he was OK. After many attempts, he got through. "Then all of a sudden, I heard the jet engine of a plane coming right over the top of us. It sounded definitely like a full-throttle screeching noise. I was it a split second before it just few right into the building. "Before I turned and ran with everyone else, you could just see the tail end of the plane and a huge plume of smoke around where the impact was." Smoke and debris spewed into the sky, falling in the direction of the crowd. Flames were shooting from both towers. "Debris started falling all around us. People were panicked to keep moving, but they were not screaming or hysterical. They were in shock, I think. It was kind of like a heavy hailstorm, but not that thick. It was more like small particles of glass. "You could definitely smell the jet fuel or whatever it was. It was a dirty smell, different from anything." Then he saw people jumping from high up one of the towers. "Every few minutes somebody would jump. They were tiny images, but you could make out the color of their clothes. A few guys who jumped looked like they were on fire. "We didn't want to watch it, but everywhere you looked, it was there." Pasquini didn't become frightened until he saw one of the towers explode in the middle, crashing in upon itself. (He saw somebody jump into the river to escape. Pasquini shielded himself under a medial barrier. He couldn't see or breathe in the heavy cloud. Pasquini removed his shirt and wrapped it around his head. He blindly groped toward glass windows that he remembered. Cupping his hands against the window, he could see people inside pointed the way toward a door. He got inside a restaurant, out of the cloud. Others poured pitchers of water over his face. Taking a tablecloth and water, Pasquini helped to wash away the blood of other people's wounds.) He and others took refuge inside a restaurant to escape the stifling, gray dust. With a tremendous explosion of collapsing metal, the second tower came down; and the second cloud blotted out the daylight. As light returned, matter was falling everywhere like a dirty gray snow. Pasquini and others were evacuated from the Battery Park marina at the tip of Manhattan Island, crossing the Hudson River on a small (overcrowded to near-sinking) police boat to the New Jersey side. (At this point, he was dirty and displaced among hundreds of other refugees. His brother Brian remembered friends in Jersey City where arrangements were made to take Scott into their home temporarily.) He expect(ed) to return to work at Merrill Lynch the next week, although officials told him it may be weeks or months before they can return to the World Financial Center. While Pasquini still looks forward to his new career, the world that was just beginning for him (Tuesday, 9/11/2001) will never be that bright again. Tell us your story: I sat at my desk working on lesson plans commemorating the upcoming anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor when my brother called to tell me he heard that a plane hit one of the twin towers. Initially I chuckled, because not but a week before a person hang gliding (or something close to that) stuck themself onto the Statue of Liberty. When we talked we thought it had to be an accident of a very small plane. A few minutes later, my mother called from CT and told me that both towers had been struck and she witnessed it live on TV. She was in complete shock, as was I. I tried to pull up anything on the web, but it was frozen. At that moment, the Museum Director flung open my door telling me that the World Trade Center had been hit. We were all pretty stunned, but kept working because we didn't have any information--until the 3rd plane struck the Pentagon. I work at the Washington Navy Yard which is but a few miles from the Pentagon. There is a decommissioned ship here, USS Barry, and the sailors on board it saw the Pentagon explosion from the deck of the ship. My Director again ran into my office and told me we had to evacuate the building of visitors because the Pentagon had been attacked. He was a basket case, but I tried to remain calm I walked around telling visitors that they would have to leave. At the time, a group of Navy WWII veterans were in the museum, and they weren't too concerned. Sadly, their bus was not allowed to leave the Navy Yard because we experienced a lockdown--no one could leave or enter the Yard. I returned to my office and was able to call my Mom to tell her that I was okay, which was good because the phone lines were jammed for the next few hours. She hadn't gone to work yet so was still at home watching this on TV. After a few minutes, we were all called to an emergency staff meeting, so I had to get off the phone with Mom and it was very difficult. At that moment I was very scared that DC might not make it through the rest of the day in one piece, and that I might not see anyone I loved again. From that point on, the museum staff was glued to a poorly-working TV in one room and a small radio in another. No one could leave, so we watched and listened. Seeing the towers fall to the ground for the first time was overwhelming. Also around that time, late in the morning, a lot of reports--later proven false--about explosions at the White House, State Dept, and Capitol circulated in the news causing everyone a lot of worry. By noon, the Navy Yard opened for people to leave in stages by distance. I was in the last group to leave because I live 8 miles form work. As a result I left work about 1:30 and was the last one in the Museum. It was very creepy, because I could see the smoke from the Pentagon out our front entrance--in fact through the museum's periscopes the fire and smoke could be seen quite well. I went home a different route than normal because I usually drive by the Pentagon to get home. The highway was closed near there, so I avoided traffic and went the long way. I decided to stop and buy some groceries at a local market before going home in case anything else was to happen later in the day or week. To my surprise the store was pretty empty for the middle of the day. One thing that I noticed was that everyone was looking up, and nodding, half-smiling, or acknowledging everyone in their paths. It was kind of comforting, because I couldn't get the tears out of my eyes. When I got home, my brother watched everything on TV and caught me up on the latest news. I found that a lot of my friends tried to get in touch to be sure I was okay. Earlier at work, email networks were down, but when emails moved, I tried telling everyone that i was okay. All I could do was sit down because it was all so unbelievable and very scary. Later that day, I sent emails to friends of mine in NYC to check on their well being. Before going to bed that night, I took a good look up in the sky at the stars. From our apartment we heard jets and helicopters circling the Pentagon and DC all night. It was very disconcerting and unreal. I thought for sure we would be attacked again. Upon awaking the next morning, I walked out onto our balcony to see that the Pentagon was still on fire, and heard air traffic again. At that point, I was relieved that we made it through the night, but did not know what would come next. I'm only a student and I was at school on 9/11/01. The day seemed just like every boring school day. Then all of a sudden my Principle came in the room...whispered something into my english teachers ear. My english teacher was about to flip out...my teacher stopped are video and turned on the news, every stared at the tv. He turned the news on just in time to watch the second plane be crashed! Everyone in the class including me couldn't believe it, we didn't know what to do or say! Some started to cry, I didn't cry but I was horrified..cause my cousin travels for his job and he was in NY. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11 I was on vacation traveling through Slovenia with my wife and in-laws. During the time of the attacks we were hiking in the mountains, blissfully unaware of what was going on in the U.S. In fact, we didn't know anything about it until the next day when the proprietor of the bed and breakfast that we had checked into late on the 11th realized that we didn't know, and told us. I should say, he told my in-laws in Serbo-Croation. I only recognized words like "New York" "Washington, DC" and "Pentagon" but from his tone, I knew the news couldn't be good. Over breakfast we saw a few clips from CNN, and heard the first snippets of the horrible story. But in the first translation I received, only one tower had collapsed. Pressed for time, we had to travel on. But we spent most of the 12th driving and talking and speculating in shock and disbelief with only the sketchiest of details. I for one was certain that it couldn't have been commercial jets, it must have been small planes with bombs. When we found it out that it was commercial jets, I was sure there must have been confederates on the ground that smuggled weapons aboard. The truth just seemed too impossible. Over the next few days we finally gathered most of the readily known details through hard to get English language copies of the International Herald Tribune, and German tabloids. My mother-in-law, with only a passing knowledge of U.S. history voiced her desire for "a new era of McCarthyism" and a general desire to live in a police state. In the solemnity of the moment I refrained from arguing with her. But inside I felt fairly certain that this one awful event would set up rationalizations for new attacks on civil liberties. Our mood on the rest of the vacation was rather subdued, though we were always in a quiet and pleasant atmosphere, and felt very removed from the turmoil at home. By the time we came back to the U.S in late September things had calmed down a bit. But I have developed the sense that I missed it, and know it mostly as a historical event, much the same way I know about Pearl Harbor, primarily through documentary materials, but not something that I really lived through, even though it continues to effect us daily. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was a beautiful morning in Indianapolis. I awoke to my alarm at about 7:30 and slowly got out of bed to walk my dog. When walking him I was thinking to myself what a beautiful September day we had been blessed with. The skies were clear, the sun was shining bright, and there was a cool breeze. After walking my dog, I hopped in the showere and started to prepare for work. I usually arrive around 9:00 and as far I remember was on pace to do the same this Tuesday morning. I don't often have time to watch the television in the morning, I did not today either. I walked out to my car oblivious as to what had and was transpiring. I always leave my radio in my car on, so as soon as the car started, the radio did as well. I have no recollection as to what station was on at the time, the only thing I remember hearing was "there is now talk that they are going to evacuate the Sears Tower" in Chicago. I remember thinking, oh no, something is going on. My boss is not strict about when people arrive at work and thus I decided to run back up stairs, turn on the tv and see what was happening. I was in disbelief at what I saw. The first tower had already been hit....it was a horrific site. I believe I was watching NBC, but I can't be sure. At the time, it just seemed as a fluke, a misguided plane, an accident. While watching the coverage, the second plane hit the second tower. "What the hell (probably not the actual word I used) is going on". At this point, people were starting to realize this was not an accident, this was intentional. Around this same time, they were also reporting that two other planes were missing, or were off course. I believe, inbetween the two planes hitting the World Trade Center towers, the 2nd or 3rd plane, depending on how you look at it, had hit the pentagon. I was speechless, scared, angry, frightened. What was happening to our country, who was doing this, and why. A 4th planes, then crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, luckily, not hitting anything on the ground, but still taking more innocent people on board that plane to their untimely deaths. I had no concept of time at this point, I was in shock, I was in hell. Then, the first tower collapsed, followed by the second. All the innocent people, why God, why? I remember thinking how many of those people in the towers were probably just like me....young professionals, just wanting to do their job and do it well. A world of opportunity was at our fingertips, and now it was all taken away from them. How easily that could have been me, or my friends. Shortly thereafter, I started feeling concern for people I know in New York City, I knew they lived downtown, did they work there, did they have the day off, were the on vacation, what? I called my dad, "Is this really happening?", "Is this on your tv too, or am I having a nightmare?" I wondered if I too had died, and this was my own personal hell, watching this. Unfortunately, my dads voice of reason confirmed my worst fears. I was screaming at the top of my lungs, I couldn't understand why this was happening, was it over, what was next, is this war? I had lived in a Leave it to Beaver world for 26 years, I was not used to this sort of suffering and pain, I had no idea how to deal with it. I wanted to fight these people, I wanted a gun, I wanted revenge. I was glued to the tv for the next 36 hours, I didn't go to work, didn't go my boss, nothing. I might have walked my dog once, that was it. I was afraid to leave. Sometime later in the day, talking with one of my friends, I found out a friend of ours worked in one of the towers. I prayed and prayed for her safety. I did not know her well, but when we were together, we always had fun. She was a beautiful, free spirit who had always dreamed of living in New York City. Watching all the coverage was gut wrenching, all the people walking around with pictures of their missing loved ones. How in the world can these people continue, where will they find their strength and resolve? The next few days were a blur, no concept of time or reality. I was obsessed with gathering as much information as I could, even though it hurt. Those few days were filled with a lot of prayer and questions. How could this happen to "us"? Katies family finally had to give up hope that she was gone. How do parents make it through losing a daughter? How would my parents handle the same situation. In Katies memory (and everyone elses for that matter) I put her initials on all my running shoes, and every race I run, I do if for her. I am not the fastest, or in the best shape, but I make it through my runs thinking of her. A marathon is difficult, but is nothing compared to what she and so many others had to go through. I love you Katie, and the Chicago Marathon this year is especially for you. This morning (9/11/02) has an eerie feeling, it was just as beautiful as last years when I awoke. Of all the years of my life that the 9-1-1 emergency system was in place and September 11th has come, I had never said that. "Today is 9-1-1." Later that morning, a co-worker told me that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. When she said it, it was like I was in the twilight zone. Like I was in a movie or something. It wasn't real. I immediately got on the phone and the Internet and started checking news resources. A few minutes later, I heard someone coming down the hall say that another plane had crashed into the other tower. At that precise moment, it hit me. Reality crushed me and I felt a fear like none I can remember ever having had before or since. When I heard about the pentagon, I felt threatened and afraid for those who worked there and for our President. When I heard that the tower had fallen, I felt pain. And I just wanted to be with my family. That's all. I remember my boss trying to be sympathetic, but trying to get done what work absolutely had to get done before I left. I remember feeling a building pressure that I needed to go home, and the longer I stayed there, the more anxious I felt about leaving. When I heard on MSNBC.com that another plane had crashed in Pennsylvania, the emotion simply became too great. The impact of what was happening was bitterly overwhelming, and I could not stay at work any longer. I needed to be with the people who were most important to me. I remember crying on my way home. Listening to the radio, and feeling mournful for the senseless loss of so many lives. I remember wishing I could be there to help those desperate and lost people who were taking the longest walk of their lives to get home, who were putting out fires and trying to save lives. I wanted to be there to help them. I wanted to reach out and hold them and cry with them. All I could do was give to the American Red Cross. So we gave what we could, which wasn't much, but it was all we had. We watched TV for the next several days. I went to work the next day wearing all black mourning the lives lost. So many. So senseless. I hurt deeply. The following day, I wore my patriotic red, white, and blue. My coworkers and I discussed it time and time again. There was no healing. There was bitterness and anger and pain and despair. Ours was an international facility. We had workers from all over the world. We tried to maintain a sense of community or at least tolerance at work, but the workers were feeling the same things we were. Some felt fear. Some hatred. This was a profoundly difficult time for all of us. Flags could not be found, so we got on our computers and made t-shirts at home. Even one for our baby. We were "Proud to be American" because of what it meant. Because of how these times brought us together as a people in a way that only tragedy can. We struggle for civil rights and human rights all the time within. A fight within a family is not an unordinary thing. But when someone attacks the family from outside, the family must come together to protect itself and every single one of its members. That's what America did. That's what made us proud. That's what makes me proud today. I lit candles with the nation in remembrance of so many who died, so many whose lives were changed by this brutal stupidity. I lit candles with the nation in a display of hope and solidarity that none could shatter. I lit candles with the nation in the promise of patriotism, a reaffirmation that this country is my home -- my motherland. The land of the free, dammit. And the home of the brave. When i had started to eat breakfast my mom had told me something bad had happened in New York this morning. At first i hadn't paid any attention to her but when i got to school everybody had been talking about 2 airplains and 2 buildings and we recieved a letter from our principal telling us not to be worried.I still didnt understand after that, It was horrable. When i got home my mom told me about it and explained it in depth she had told me it was like the bombing that happened in oklahoma city but 100s of times worse. the only reason i knew about the bombing in oklahoma was because my dad was in oklahoma city the same time the bombing happened. When my mom had finished explainig i had felt soooo bad for the people that me and my friends had wrote letters to the people who were hurt and my teacher mailed them for us. still today i don't exactly know what happened being all the way from there. I saw what happened on the news just before I was leaving for my dancelesson. The entire bus-ride was filled with thoughts. When I came home every channel on TV was showing the terrible action. It scares me that people are capable to do terrible things like that. The next couple of weeks this was all over the news. After a while, it kind of slipped our minds. But then I heard DJ Sammy's, Heaven 9/11 remix. Even though I live in Norway, this has affected me a lot. I have heard many songs made for 9/11,and I feel like crying everytime I hear them. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at work. Someone came in and told us that there had been an "accident" in the City. Someone got a video tape of the first plane hitting the Tower and we have a TV here in the Art Dept (it's not connected to the outside by plays tapes). A bunch of us watched in horror. Then we heard that the second plane hit and we knew it was no accident. It was scary because I work in a "defense oriented" business next to Republic Airport on Long Island. The president of our company came over the intercom and told us we could leave if we wanted to. We didn't know what was going to happen especially after hearing about the "other planes". My friend worked for Solomon Smith Barney near WTC and I was worried about her all day. She ran for her life and met her husband in Brooklyn. She saw people jumping from the Towers from her window at SSB and cannot get the images out of her head. Today she is home but will not watch TV or listen to the radio. Vinny DiFazio, my sister's nephew through marriage worked in the tower so around lunchtime I went to my sister's house where we and her kids and their wives all waited for word of Vincent. He was in the first bombing and we saw him walk out of the building on TV. His mother said he told her "a bomb had hit and he was getting out." He worked at Cantor Fitzgerald. We waited all day for word. That night, 9/11/01, my sister and I lit a candle for Vinny. We could see the smoke from NYC out here on the island...we saw all the people lighting candles on corners and in parking lots. We waited for a week or so and no word of Vinny, we knew he was gone. Then his wife had a memorial service in New Jersey. We drove past the site of the where the Towers had stood and smoke was still pouring out. There was tons of emergency traffic and we saw the huge trailer trucks carrying twisted pieces of steel. Vinny coached a lot of soccer teams so his teams were all at his service, over 1,000 people showed up. Some didn't even know him. They played his favorite songs and the prest gave a moving sermon. His cousin on the other side of the family, Sal Lopes, also worked for C-F and also died that day. God Bless America, land of the free and the brave. I woke up and as I went to the kitchen to make myself a sandwich, I turned on the tv. I was changing the channels to see what they were giving. When I happend to pass the cartoons so instead I decided to put the news to see what they were giving. A sign came up and said breaking news and the news caster said that two palnes just flew into the Twin Towers. As I heard the news I almost choked on my sandwich. When my mother walked into the kitchen I had told her waht had happend. Then me and my mother started talking about how horrible it was. My life hasn't relly changed dramatically,it did change in some ways. Now I am afraid to go on airplanes because I think something horrible might happened. I was afraid to go to the mall to shop because something horrible might of happend. I wonder why the Afghanis want to kill so many people but yet kill themselves.What I think that we should remember about September eleventh is all those people who died in the Twin Towers, and yet the airplanes.We should remember why the terrorist did what they did and that not everyone loves Ameria also how much America was united after that. SO i walked through the living room to my parents room. When i entered i saw my mom and she looked very shocked. As i went to sit on the bend next to my mom she said, "The World Trade Centers just got run into by a plane." I didnt think much of it because at the time i didnt even know what the World Trade Centers were. For the next week or so at school it seemed like that the World trade center bombing was all that we talked about. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I pastor a small church in Westport, MA, and also do computer consulting work from home, often working all night. I'd only been asleep a few hours when the phone rang the morning of Sept. 11--my son, calling from his job as cook in a retirement center. He told me a fantastic story about a plane crashing into the WTC, and I guessed a small plane. He told me it was a passenger plane. I refused to believe it...what professional pilot couldn't miss a building that big? Someone must pulling a hoax. He told me it was on the television and I should listen--but being sleep-deprived, I groggily said "Later, I will," and hung up. I said a prayer for all who were caught up in whatever was happening, sank back into sleep. It can have been only a few minutes before my "semi-son," who stays with us, called from his workplace. His voice was excited, urgent--"Ma! Wake up and turn on the tv! Two planes hit the WTC! We're being attacked!" That woke me up. Turning on CNN, I saw the horrible pictures now so familiar to all of us, and felt sickened. Just one week earlier my son and his girlfriend had returned from a European trip. I'd dropped them off at Logan Airport, and picked them up there--with horrible premonitions of an airline crash. For months, each time I looked at an airplane, I "saw" it covered by lines as if it had been torn apart and pieced back together. I chided myself for my premonitions, but was so relieved when they were safely off the plane! That day I called the firm in Cambridge I'd been doing extra work for and told them I wouldn't be in...I needed to be at my church. I started making contact with parishioners, to hold a 7 PM prayer service. I found that one of our Westport mothers, not a member of our church but connected through her daughter to church members, was a flight attendant on American Airlines 11, and was missing. Diane Snyder died that day when her plane crashed into the WTC. The MA Conference of the United Church of Christ had liturgies and prayers posted as resources for churches and pastors by that afternoon, which was a blessing. The following weeks have been difficult--no less so for pastors, as we struggled to deal with our own sense of loss and the enormity of raw evil exposed that day, while still seeking and offering the love and peace that faith should untimately embrace. We endure, and may God turn and transform even this evil into something that might point toward the good.
