Tell us your story: I was at home getting ready for work and a friend had called to tell me that a plane hit the one of the towers at the World Trade Center. I was concerned and turned on the TV to see the North Tower filled with smoke. I was already running late for work and had to leave, not realizing what was to come. I thought it was just an accident and I would hear about it on the radio. While I was on the way to work I heard that the other tower was hit. As I approached the Long Island Expressway, I couldn't believe my eyes. I could see the smoke coming from the towers! I would say I was about 50 miles away from the city and I just couldn't believe what I was seeing. I immediately turned around and headed for home in fear that we were going to be attacked again. My 8 year old son was at school and all I could think of was getting to him. That day will surely be a day I will never forget. We sat and just stared at the TV the entire day in disbelief. The part that saddens me the most is my neighbor lost one of her sons in this horrific event. I could not imagine what that must be like for her and her family. It hurts me so much, I can't even begin to feel her pain. The ironic thing is that her son took off for a golf outing the day before and the day after September 11th, but went in the day of so that he would not be to far behind in his work. That really has to hurt. My heart goes out to Joseph John Peroncino, may God keep you in his arms forever and may God help your family to find the peace and healing they are in such need for. He turned on the news as usual and immediately came and literally pulled me out of bed to the TV. It didn't take long to wake up when I saw the footage of the first plane hitting the WTC. We figured it must have been an accident. My husband left for work and I sat glued to the TV as I watched the tragedy unfold, the second plane hit, the towers collapsing, the people running from the clouds of dust, smoke and dirt. It all happened so fast- it was like a bad dream. I didn't change out of my pajamas all day. I held my little girl close and grieved for those who loved and lost. Especially the women who were pregnant or had small children like my precious little girl and lost their mates. I can't imagine the pain and sorrow that these women went through and are still going through. When it was determined that this was a violently deliberate act- I was dumbfounded. I had no idea something different was going to happen that morning.I wasn't until after I got out of the shower that my mother said"umm... Tim,a plane just crashed into that building..." It really wasn't that big of a deal at first most probably thought it was just a huge accident. It least until a few moments later, then everyone started to have second thoughts."Look!It happened again!",my mother was right a second plane had crashed into the world trade center. We really didn't have time to gawk in horror.Even though my mom was still freaking out we realized that we needed to go. My sister would be late for school but at least I would be able to reach the docters office before I was late. On the way we learned that the pentagon had also been hit. Now THAT was really bad to me. When a place with protection of the magnitude can be hit crap has hit the fan. Because of a docters excuse I no longer had to go to school. My mom drove to the school to drop off my sister. She got off the car to find her class and my mother went in to check her in. My mother came back a little distressed. she didn't know whether to let my sister stay at school or pull her out. I told her to do what she felt but instead she let Rhiannon stay. I didn't want my mom to worry but it was all she could do the following weeks watching the TV. I wanted my mother to be able to forget, but I realized none of us would ever be able to forget that day. I was in first block, and listening to a majorly bummed out biology teacher try to talk and teach us. Then, a woman came in with a tv and told us to watch this amazing thing that was happening. We then saw the first tower with a big hole in it. We then saw the new station which i think was CNN, show the first plane run into the trade center. Tell us your story: (Written on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001): Many of us who live in the New York City metropolitan area ourselves work, or have friends or loved ones who work in downtown Manhattan, the scene of Tuesday's horrifying attack on the World Trade Center. Undoubtedly, some of us are grieving the loss of someone we knew personally. Collectively, we mourn for the thousands of individuals, honest working people like ourselves, who just a few miles away suffered an unspeakable horror at the hands of an enemy we can barely comprehend. Our hearts are deeply broken from this senseless and overwhelming loss of life. The words and faces of the countless family and friends whose lives were so suddenly and tragically violated will haunt our thoughts for months and years to come. For many years the Manhattan skyline has been the glistening landscape of my own back yard, the awe-inspiring, ever-vibrant Emerald City of the Hudson. In 1977, while living on West Houston Street in Greenwich Village where my small apartment boasted an unobstructed view of the top third of the shiny new World Trade Towers, I witnessed a tiny black speck moving slowly up the northeast corner Tower One that proved to be George Willig, the "human fly" who scaled the full 110 stories to the top, eclipsing the infamous tightrope walk by Phillippe Petit just three years earlier. For the past fourteen years, from my high-rise apartment atop New Jersey's Palisades, I derived great pleasure from the breathtaking power of these man-made wonders, often racing for my camera at the crack of dawn, or at that magical twilight hour when the golden sunset flashes on the tall glass structures like glittering jewelry as the stars begin to dance against a deepening blue sky. Tonight, in the place where the great Towers once stood is a ghostly white corona, a colossal cloud of dust and smoke eerily illuminated by the floodlights guiding the rescue crews for whom tonight, again, there will be no sleep. I stood numbed in disbelief when suddenly, the long sliver of the south Tower I could just see behind the north began to spew a cascade of filmy gray matter, like a dark waterfall, from its sky-high pinnacle down towards the ground. It was difficult to immediately discern what it was I had just seen through the smokey shroud, but when I next noticed monstrous clouds of thick, rolling white powder rising 50 stories up from the ground around the cluster of downtown buildings, tumbling and rippling wide into a half-mile radius around the site of the Trade Center and spilling deep out into the harbor -- I knew something doubly disastrous had happened. I dashed into my living room to see what the TV news was reporting, and learned that the south Tower had in fact completely collapsed. Reeling from the shock of this, weeping in horror for the thousands of people obviously lost, both in the tower and on the ground, slowly trying to grasp that the endangered north Tower had finally lost its twin, and contemplating what a sad and devastating reminder it will be to see the lone Tower standing where this double monument had stood for nearly 30 years, sentinel to the world's most magnificent skyline -- I was physically shaken when suddenly the remaining north Tower started to drop, like a vertical accordion, straight down in a wobbly but steady descent, in a liquid-like halo of dark dust, literally sinking out of sight from the New York City landscape. The empty space in my familiar view will forever sting as a sad reminder of the innocent lives horribly taken, the heroism of the rescue crews victimized at the scene, and the deep loss felt by the friends and family of those fellow Americans we lost on this tragic 11th day of September, 2001. At approximately 8:55 my office manager called on the private line to say that a plane hit the World Trade Center Tower and to go the waiting room and turn on the TV set. I remember sitting there watching in horror as the second plane hit and knowing that it wasn't an accident that we were under attack. My first thoughts were of my husband and my sons. I had two sons in college at the time one in Florida and one here in New York near New York City. My third son was at our local Jr. High. I called my husband to see if he had heard and he had. He said work was going as usual and he would see me later that night. I called our local Jr. High and they said the children knew what was going on they were all watching TV sets throughout the school and that the school was going to remain open but it any parent wanted to come and get their children they were more than welcome to do so. I was able to reach my son that is in Oneonta, near NYC and he was fine classes had been cancelled for the day because alot of students there had family members in NYC. He was doing okay watching what was going on his TV in his room. My son in Florida it took most of the day before I could reach him because he was out on the ocean for his marine biology course. He goes to Florida Tech in Melbourne. The boat he was on was called back in by the school after news broke because they were near Cape Canaveral. My son said that classes were also cancelled because Florida Tech has alot of foreign students from the middle east and the school was fearful of problems developing. I had to stay at work all day as working for a physician and being a nurse I needed to be there for the patients even though my heart was with my family and all the families that had someone working in NYC. It was an extremely hard day to get through. Many tears were shed. I remember all I wanted to do was go home and hug my family. It was one of the first times when I wished my children had chosen a college closer to home so I could be with them. I still look back on that day and the days after and wonder how we managed to function and go on with our lives when so many other lives were in turmoil. I know I will never forget how I felt when I heard and saw what was happening on that day. To everyone who was in NYC and Washington DC that day my prayers were with you. To the families of the victims my heart goes out to you and your loved ones I just can't imagine what they must have been going thru. God Bless America! May this never happen to us again. Tell us your story: I was at work starting the day as always when a customer ins our waiting room stood up and was shocked to see the first plane hit the WTC tower. At first my Office Manager and I thought it was just an accident, but then realized it was no accident. The customer that was watching the footage was actually a soldier stationed at Ft. Campbell, and was having her vehicle serviced, She asked if she could use the phone to let her C.O know where she was and how to reach her if needed. I was so shocked that it happened the way it did. We all just sat around the T.V and radio all day and listened to reports. My blessings go to the families, soldiers, firefighters, and police that lost friends and family. Tell us your story: i heard my mother screaming in the other room she was on the phone with a friend and when i heard hear scream i jumped up and said "mama what has happened" and she said they had 4 hijacked planes or they were missing i cant remember how she put it still waking up i turned and looked at the television and was just like OH MY GOD i cant belive what i am seeing i watched the tower fall right before my eyes i called my grandfather jim hardin in gastonia N.C.and he told me the U.S. was under attack that day around 1:30 we went over to my sisters school and tried to pick her up and thier was a Sheriffs deputy that told us to leave immediately and to get off the school grounds so we left and went to the dollar store and we walked in and these two ladies were sitting there in tears just sobbing i was in so much shock i did not know what to think it was almost like i felt numb all over i couldnt belive this had happened my father was a pastor in Asheville at Crossroads Assembly of God and he opened the church that night for prayer and we had about 300 people that showed up and we all sat their and prayed and just cried thier were grown men in the service that were crying and i remember we came home that night and I laid in my bed and just thanked God that my life had been spared that day -sincerly Matthew Brown Asheville N.C. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I would like to start by saying that my heart goes out to all the families of those who were lost. I can remember that day like it was ysterday, and it is now a year later. My thoughts and actions of that day flow through my head everyday. I am in high school, and that day, I was in third period, which goes from 8:30 A.M. to 10:10 A.M. This class happened to be Journalism for me. In that class, if we did not have the newspapers, we would turn on the TV to watch news. This turned out to be the worst day that we would watch the news. I can remember watching and then came this "Breaking News" sign that said an airplane had hit the WTC. About 5 or 10 minutes later, we watched the second plane hit. It was horrifying. The whole class now knew that the first one was no accident. Then, the Pentagon. Now, the first two, although horrifying, I could almost deal with because I don't know anyone in New York, but my dad works at the Pentagon, and I was freaking out now. The teachers recieved emails saying to not turn on their TV's, but since we already knew about it, we conviced our teacher to keep the TV on. At aroud 11 A.M., I ended up going home with my friend, against what the school wanted, but I just knew that I could not be there anymore. Guidance had been set up in our school auditorium, but there was nothing they could do with the phone lines the way they were. It was mass pandimonium, as everyone wanted to talk to their loved one. When I arrived home, we had a message from all of my family except my dad. I started freaking out, because that is the one message I wanted on my machine. I later found out that my dad was fine, and he was two sides away from the side that got hit eating breakfast in the cafeteria. He later told me that him and a few of his buddies were half-joking that they would be next, just a few minutes before they were evacuated after being hit. Most of my family are or were firefighters, so I have grown up around the firehouse, and know the sort of family that it is. I have also always had the respect for what they do everyday. This has only grown more since last Setemember 11. I also believe that firefighters are finally being recognized for what they have been doing day in and day out for a long time, a long time before September 11, 2001. I live with this as a part of my life everyday. When the people that are my age have kids, and their kidslearn about this day, it won't be the same as living through it. Nothing can unite anyone like that day did. This is my story and I hope that maybe some people can read this and better understand what happened that day through my eyes. God Bless the USA! I woke up as usual, took a shower and began my daily routine of rushing to school. I never listen to the radio because all they do is have talk shows in the morning and no station actually plays music. When I finally got to school that morning everything was still pretty ordinary. I remember my friend mentioning something about terrorist in New York but I didnt think she was talking about anything recent. I remebered hearing about a plane hijacking, and ransom put on the hostages a while back. I'm not really up to date on the latest news in the world. I have always chosen not to watch the news, not because it is boring, but because its depressing. The news these days only show how much our society is falling. When I first entered first period I noticed the TV was on but I figured it was just the stock market channel. When I heard that there was a plane that crashed into one of the towers I was shocked. I thought it was a horrible accident. When the second one hit I thought it was the strangest coincidence. Shortly after my Bio teacher gave us a little talk to try and help us understand what was going on. It was then that it hit me. For the first few minutes I was panicked. I thought we were in war and I visualized the violence you can only imagine in movies. Thinking about it now I can only say that I guess I was just naive. I didnt think that normal people like us were capable of such horrific acts. But they are, and the scariest part is that in their eyes there actions are righteuous and just. On that Tuesday my world started out all about myself but when this tragedy hit it gave me a new perspective on life and it broke my heart when I thought of all the people that were just going about their daily business, like me, when suddenly their lives or the lives of their loved ones were taken. I checked other news stations and the TV stations were blackouted and were all talking about the WTC Terror. I watched the news on the WTC incident for literally over 6 hours straight. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was my one morning to sleep in. I was grateful for not having to get up early. I was the only person home, my mother was on vacation, my father was at work, and my brother was in college. I woke up to my radio playing. The morning DJ was saying something about a plane crash. I didn't think it was very important and my mind wasn't working it out because I had just woken up. As my mind became more clear I heard them say a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center towers. My entire body snapped to attention. I jumped out of bed and turned on a TV as fast as possible. As the TV came on I could see one of the World Trade Center towers burning. I sat down, but less than 30 seconds later I was on my feet again in disbelief that another plane had just slammed into the other tower. I couldn't think but instinctively I went to the shower because I had to get ready for school. I did everything as quickly as possible so I could see as much TV coverage as possible before I left for school. When i got to school hardly anyone knew about it. The Principal came on the announcements to explain what had happened and to say that we weren't allowed to watch the coverage on TV. I was in band at the time and they made us turn off the TV, but unwilling to let that stop us we found another small TV, smuggled it into a practice room and watched more TV. We were all huddled around the TV when suddenly one of the Towers started to collapse. No one could move or say anything and not too long after the other one collapsed. Everyone sat there staring at the TV until the last possible second when we had to leave to get to the next class on time. I sat in geometry with my mind wandering. I coculdn't think of anything but the catastrophe. Despite the announcement every teacher let us watch the TV reports. For the rest of the day my mind ran over the scene of the plane crashing into the buildings and then them collapsing into a pile of rubble. Tell us your story: Once bearing witness to the September 11th attack, I was ordered to return back down to the location to provide backup support for the security officers who remained behind. I returned on the 15th, and continued working a around the clock shift until the thret was lifted, up until my being hospitalized on Febuary 15th, 2002. There was'nt any support from the security company that I worked for as well as the federal government, I am fully disabled and only attending school right now at John Jay in hope of some future employment later. I was driving in my car, and I remember thinking about what a shame it was that our country wasn't more patriotic. It seems to me that a lot of younger people don't have a respect for the flag or for those that have died for our country. I was wished there was something I could do to help boost patriotism and respect for our flag. I thought about sponsoring an essay contest, to get children to think about what our flag represents. It was a thought I had, then I went on with my day. The next day I awakened to my husband calling and telling me what had happened. I turned on the TV and short while later watched the second tower collapse. I could not believe that thousands of people were dying "in front of me". The previous day I never could have imagined that the following day there would be thousands of flags flying across our country and patriotism like I've never seen in my lifetime. It happened in the worst possible way, and I wasn't the one responsible for it, but my wish for a more patriotic and appreciative nation had come true. People said ?bye? to their love ones as routine without knowing that it was going to be the last one. I lived through this catastrophe close to Washington. My host mom and me were preparing my host dad?s birthday and listening to the radio. We heard the terrible news and turned on the television immediately. I could not believe my eyes. At first, I had a movie, a very well made Hollywood movie, in my mind. Then I realized that it was the reality. I got ? paralyzed?. I could not move from the television. I was just starring at the screen for hours and hours, but everything was blurred. My thoughts were somewhere else. I thought of my family and I was glad that they were not here. They were back in Europe out of harms way. I tried to make contact with them and let them know that I was all right, but the lines were busy. Few hours after the tragedy, I finally reached my relatives. They were worried about me, but at the same time they were relieved to know that I was fine. After the catastrophe my family was concerned about my staying in America. They would have liked me to be next to them. I convinced them successfully that I was secure from the terrorists. Although, it was a shocking experience, I have never felt that my life is in danger. I remember standing at the door, keys in hand and yelling to my two daughters that they were going to make us all late if they didn't hurry it along. I had just started my first year of teaching after taking time to stay home with my children. I had gotten a job teaching a first grade class, in the small rural area in which we live. The school was being remodeled and had no cable access at the time. When I first heard the rumor that a plane had hit the first tower, I was just saddened to hear a terrible accident had taken place. Not once in my mind did I even think it was on purpose! I started to cry for those that had been hurt in the accident, never even thinking just how many poor souls I would later cry for. When the second plane hit I remember finally thinking "OH MY GOD!" this isn?t an accident. I remember my principal coming down the hall saying that we were in "lock down" mode. This meant that no one would be leaving the building or entering without being checked out. Frantic parents running into the school to get their children, my other students being scared by just the look on the grownups faces, and the feeling of thankfulness that my daughters were safe and sound at work with me are the most I remember about that day. Later at home I finally watched the TV coverage and was both saddened and sickened by the destruction of that day. I cried for all those lost, for mothers not being about to kiss their babies again, for fathers never going home, but mostly for those children that would be forever changed. I never want to forget that day. When my girls are late and we need to rush I stop and think now, how lucky we are to just have normal everyday problems. I no longer take for granted the gifts I have been given. Life is a bit slower for me now, I take time to stop and enjoy the moment. I have a cousin that married a man from Europe, for years he has told me that we Americans were like ostriches with our heads in the sand about the evils around us and the way other countries view we Americans. I hope that they now see how strong and bonded we are now after September 11th.
